U.S. Military Attacks Private Iranian Assets – Expect Iran To Respond In Kind

The U.S. military is (again) disregarding the rules of war.

U.S. Central Command @CENTCOM – 13:38 UTC · Sep 5, 2026

CENTCOM Destroys 3 IRGC Oil Tankers After Iran Targets 2 U.S. Navy Warships

TAMPA, Fla. — U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces struck three Iranian crude oil carriers, Sept. 5, after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched ballistic missiles toward two U.S. Navy warships patrolling regional waters.

A U.S. aircraft carrier and guided-missile destroyer successfully evaded multiple unprovoked Iranian attacks. No American personnel were harmed.

Following Iran’s failed attacks, CENTCOM permanently disabled the IRGC crude oil carriers M/T Downy off the coast of Kharg Island and M/T Stark 1 near Jask. American forces also completely destroyed the unladen crude oil carrier M/T Kylo (also known as the “Noxen”) in the Gulf of Oman, striking the vessel in multiple critical locations to render it inoperable after the crew was directed to abandon ship.

The three Iranian crude oil tankers are part of a multibillion-dollar shadow network that funds the IRGC and its regional proxies. Iran has no means by which to defend them. …

Iran had been attacked by the U.S. and responded in kind. The parties are at war. The U.S. is currently blockading the Iranian coast. In response the Iranian military has targeted two U.S. warships who are part of the blockade force. This was, under the rules of war, a legitimate attack against legitimate targets.

U.S. strikes against military targets in Iran would have been a legitimate response.

The three tankers the U.S. has hit instead are not military targets.

There is no such thing as an “IRGC oil tanker”. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps isn’t a shipping company.

The ownership of the M/T Downy, IMO 9218480, is not public. It is under Iranian flag. Kharg island, near to where the ship was hit, is in the upper east of the Persian Gulf – far away from the U.S. maintained blockade line.

The M/T Stark 1, IMO 9171450, is also under Iranian flag and owned by the National Iranian Tanker Company which:

.. is a subsidiary of the National Iranian Oil Company, which was privatized in 2009. As of 2011, NITC was owned by funds managing pensions for 5 million Iranians. It is the biggest tanker company in the Middle East.

The M/T Stark 1 was near Jask in the Sea of Oman.

The M/T Kylo, previously M/T Noxen, IMO 9189146, is under the flag of Cameroon. The ownership is not public. The ship was at anchor in the Gulf of Oman.

All three ships are civil carriers. They were unarmed. None of them was attempting to break the U.S. blockade or in any way involved in military activities. None of them was in any way a justifiable military target.

Why does this matter?

The U.S. military is breaching the rules of war. It is highly likely that Iran will respond in kind.

The CentCom strike on these ships give Iran a public justification to respond with hits at any and all civilian, privately owned, assets which are somewhat related to the U.S. of A. There are thousands of those within Iran’s neighborhood.

It is probably wise for now to avoid any visit to any McDonalds in an area near or in the Middle East.

In the current period of Zio Imperialist desperation there are no rules to rein them in beyond 1) do everything Zios demand and 2) don’t jeopardize the wealth of the Zio billionaire oligarchy (in the extremely short term, at least).
I look forward to Iran responding in kind and with interest.  I look forward to watching the Dow collapse on Tuesday.
Iran is the sword of humanity.  You are with it body and soul or you are with the Zio baby killers.  Zero middle ground now.

Nice. Now Iran can blow up all the data centers, banks, and other phony-financial infrastructure. Hopefully such that they can’t paper it over. $10/gal gas might finally wake people up.

Good point.  Actually “America” is not even “America”.  It is continent divided between a handful of zio billionaire oligarchs and hundreds of millions of wage slaves.
“They’ve got the guns, we’ve got the numbers” as a clever poet once sung.   In the US , the slaves actually have s lot of guns too.

RT:
Trump proclaimed his intent to turn back to trying to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict at the G7 summit in France in June, when it was anticipated the conflict with Iran would be settled shortly.
“Now that this [Iran war] is finished, we are gonna be focusing on that [Ukraine conflict] and see if we can get that one done,” he (Trump) told reporters, referring to the memorandum of understanding with Tehran.

See there ya go… Iran war is finished…

The Outlaws try very hard to say they aren’t at war when they clearly are; yet another Orwellianism standing for its usual behavior. Most Outlaw assets in the region are tied to its military and can be considered axillaries whereas the Iranian tankers cited aren’t tied to the Iranian military. This situation connects with today’s Global Times editorial Why ‘dragon-restaurant diplomacy’ struck a nerve with Western mainstream media?: Global Times editorial – Global Times that flogs an article in The Economist that deserves flogging. The British are so paranoid about China that they are saying chips in Chinese made tractors are a threat:

“organizations linked to China” could infiltrate agricultural equipment to spy on UK farm yields and obtain intelligence on the UK’s food security.

China’s MFA responded thusly:

We urge the British side to immediately stop this self-directed, clumsy performance of the thief calling ‘stop thief,’ or else it will only bring humiliation upon themselves.

Hard to distinguish between UK Labor and the Outlaw Trump Gang when it comes to behavior.

On the financial front, Iran is winning big time.

Withdrawal restrictions from private credit is a sign financial markets are freezing up. No one also remembers anymore how western real estate funds froze up maybe a year or two ago. And they could freeze for weeks or months because real estate market was frozen.

These seizures also usually caused by lack of physical things colliding with the illusion of paper things. One of the reason, for example why diesel/gasoline and oil spreads were so high was because oil was manipulated to stay lower than the real value per supply and demand, but distillate products aren’t that easy to manipulate.

BREAKING 🚨: Private Credit

Blackstone just restricted withdrawals from its flagship private credit fund for the 2nd consecutive quarter, allowing investors to pull only half of the 10% requested 🤯 👀 Wealthy investors are racing for the exits!!!

I am certain if Iran wanted direct hits,  it would be done.

I’m in agreement with others that the response will most likely be continuing with base hitting, and mixing it up with commercial.

If they really wanted to muck stuff up,  they would start hitting US LNG tankers in the Pacific that are en route  somewhere.

I’m certain they have some friends in the area.

Narrative.

Posted by: Caveat | Sep 5 2026 18:18 utc | 17

I recently saw a post on MES stating this with a series of pictures – “After more than 9 months at sea, with the crew running out of rations and supplies and experiencing dozens of attempted suicides, the USS Abraham Lincoln has returned to port in ThailandThe aircraft carrier is clearly past its prime. Rust is seen all over the ship, with some sections looking like they could fall apart at any moment.”
It then occurred to me, the USA was attempting to use this falling apart rusty old ship like the ships and Navy men left in Pearl Harbor before the Japanese struct it.

Maybe the Iranians refused to fall for that.  Now that there is a newer ship, much more valuable sitting there, hmmm, maybe wait until after the elections in Israel and the midterms.

I would hate to be on the USS George Washington CVN and the escorting destroyers during a high speed evasion operation due to incoming drones, cruise and ballistic missile………….

Those ships only have a limited supply of SM missiles and CIWS 20 and 30mm ammo…….continued IRGC attacks will deplete that ammo and missile supply fairly quickly.  Most CIWS guns only hold 2000 rounds in one magazine, and they are not easy to change up.  LOL

Surely the IRGC will be eyeing up new targets in UAE, SA and Kuwait………..data centers anyone?

The Qatari government has confirmed, in an official document submitted to the ITU, that Iran’s defensive strikes against American forces stationed on Qatari soil “were directed towards US military facilities. […] No civilian areas have been targeted.”

The sole exception alleged by Qatar was an attack against a gas facility on 18 March. It should be recalled, however, that the facilities struck that day were serving US military aggression against Iran.

This stands in stark contrast to the United States’ long record of deliberate attacks on civilian targets – schools, hospitals, residential neighborhoods, wedding ceremonies, bridges, and more.

There is a vast difference between a civilized nation that has learned the importance of adhering to moral and humanitarian principles even under the most distressing circumstances, and warmongering rulers who observe no rule of law or ethics in their projection of power.

I think there are a few theories about the causes for current – ‘ small potatoes’ – war
1. “Medhurst’ Theorem” – to make US the only energy supplier and dealer
2. To Make Israel Great (not again – it never was ‘great’) by defeating Iran
3. Steal the Middle Eastern mineral wealth – to prevent the collapse of the US empire

Points 1 and 3  are somehow the same – and point 2 is also linked
Is this simplified view correct?

Warwick Powell digs into that issue, The Ouroboros Out of the Cage – by Dr Warwick Powell:

Preface: I’ve been mapping the structural decay of western techno-capitalism for a while. This essay contributes to this broad theme of work. Late stage financialisation relies on the proliferation of fictitious capital — claims that expand exponentially while severing ties to real productive capacity (the world of use values) and thermodynamic realities. This essay situates the recent SoftBank-OpenAI leverage loop within this wider context. Far from being anomalous, the leverage loop represents a circular debt engine illustrative of the terminal phase of American financial dominance. It harks to a desperate attempt to monetise unpriced, speculative assets to offset declining industrial returns. Here, the AI boom reveals itself not as a renaissance of American industry but as financialisation’s last, hyper-leveraged hurrah. While the arrangers make off with fees, retail investors will ultimately be left carrying the can. It’s another symptom suggestive that we have entered a terminal phase. [Format Original]

I see Richard Wolff has generated a new hypothesis explaining what the Trump Gang is doing and why. He spells it out in this chat with Glenn Diesen. I second his notion and intend to expand upon it. I also agree with his contention that the D-party is on board with the project but is being as quiet as it can about that preference. Canadian Barflies in particular need to watch/listen to what Wolff has to say. The Iran War goes against that project. So, the longer Outlaw engagement with its West Asian Tar Baby, the longer the project will be delayed. However, as Wolff emphasizes, the deeply propagandized Outlaw US Empire public needs to be shocked from its stupor if it’s to oppose all the inimical things being done that are deeply against its interests.

Meanwhile, Ansar Allah’s missile attack forced the USS Truman to carry violent maneuvers resulting in a loss of an F18.

Israel and the US are playing the nuclear Joker card to prevent Iran from achieving an all out victory.

Iran’s moral decision to not build nuclear weapons maybe a civilization ending one. I wonder if the fatwa was for using nuclear weapons or testing one.

A single test would end all speculation of nukes ever being use., it would finish off Trump for good with the “We prevented Iran from building the bomb” lie.

I’ve seen at least one analyst say the Iranians are trying to escalate things at the moment Trump doesn’t want to, preferring to keep things more low level and out of the news with suggestions that immediately after the midterms the war will be cranked up again. If the Americans respond it hurts the Republicans at the midterms and puts pressure on Trump, if the Americans fail to respond it makes them look weak and losing. Heads I win, tails you lose.
Looking at the video that is no engine room knockout, I hope there was no crew onboard at the time.

whether he or the next leader in the usa can continue with this project remains to be seen.. if they don’t have success with russia or iran, wolff may be correct in that canada and mexico are next on the colonialists menu… i am not sure how it will work out… a number of things can happen before this might actually happen, so we will see… thanks for the encouragement watch the video…

According to the search context, the “fatwa” consists of vague statements and political rhetoric rather than a formal religious decree.”

Posted by: fanto | Sep 5 2026 19:15 utc | 28

Sounds about right to me.  Only thing I would add is: 1) and 3) are linked, but also separate.  The US needs more stuff, and is scouring the world for anything we can … steal.

On the Iranian “fatwa”:

Rafighdoost understood Khomeini’s prohibition on the use or production of chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons as a fatwa — a judgment on Islamic jurisprudence by a qualified Islamic scholar. It was never written down or formalized, but that didn’t matter, because it was issued by the “guardian jurist” of the Islamic state — and was therefore legally binding on the entire government. “When Imam said it was haram[forbidden], he didn’t have to say it was fatwa,” Rafighdoost explained.

Read the entire report here. Clearly, a fatwa doesn’t need to be published/written to be a fatwa. Trying to make such conditions mandatory is Western bullshit.

OK.  Then what are the specific provisions of the ‘fatwah?’  Does it ban production or does it only recommend against use?

If it’s not specific.  It’s “bullshit.”

The CentCom strike on these ships give Iran a public justification to respond with hits at any and all civilian, privately owned, assets which are somewhat related to the U.S. of A. There are thousands of those within Iran’s neighborhood.

Dream of free men is to abolish slavery. Dream of slave is to have own slaves.

American slaves may have guns but they are brainwashed slaves and they don’t dream to change the system, only to get richer and move up the food chain.

The film “Once Upon A Time In The Middle East” will be opening in Australian cinemas in mid-September. The cinema in Chatswood (northern Sydney suburb with a large East Asian population and smaller communities of Armenians and Iranians) where I live will be showing it. It is being advertised as a film about a couple of Chinese guys running a Chinese restaurant in a Middle Eastern country and doing well, at least until war breaks out, and how the restaurant survives.

Another Chinese film “Dear You”, based on the experiences of Chinese migrants in Thailand during the 1950s and 60s has been doing huge business for the past few months in Chatswood and some other cinemas in Sydney. The film opened back in June and it is still running though mostly in the evenings. Spring school holidays – usually the time to show Hollywood superhero and action thriller blockbuster garbage – are coming soon but the output from Tinsel town is very lean this year. Hollywood clearly isn’t what it used to be and the cinemas are loading up with more foreign-language films (from China, France, India and South Korea) than they used to do.

BREAKING: For the first time since the start of the war, Iran’s IRGC attempted to hit a US nuclear aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Oman yesterday, using the Qasem Basir medium-range anti-ship ballistic missile which has a range of approximately 1,200km.

In response to the strike, US CENTCOM has permanently disabled 3 Iranian oil tankers, including the M/T Downy off the coast of Kharg Island, the M/T Stark 1 near Jask, and the M/T Kylo in the Gulf of Oman.

Iran now directly warns Trump that “All US naval ships are now targets. Any strikes on Iranian ships will be met with multiple strikes on vessels linked to countries participating in the anti-Iranian aggression.”

Iran is again launching anti-ship cruise missiles toward a US aircraft carrier and/or vessels under US Navy escort in the past few minutes, per initial reports.

Every USraeli commercial asset that can be used by USraeli military for comfort is a further target, yes (hence “avoid McDonald’s in the ME/WA”). But that’s also a lot of extra targets. And though while tempting for vengeance, how much of it really degrades USraeli military presence directly? It would need to be extra juicy, such as a hotel where military brass and intelligence officers flee to en masse.

This is more desperation in an attempt to taunt the Iranians into reacting than retaining the OODA Loop.

There’s a Western fetish that to be authentic things must be written. However, Humanity throughout the vast majority of its existence was governed by unwritten rules we now call norms and mores–the blood and bones of culture. The longstanding fact that a man’s word was equal to his honor is founded on that system. Handshakes concluding agreements were often all that was needed to seal a contract. It can also be said that the mere fact of reporting what was said as a religious order–a fatwa in this case–in writing makes it written–the scribe taking down the edict from the Imam. Did the Imam actually write it? No. Does the resulting edict not exist? No. That the White Man spoke with “forked tongue” and disobeyed its written edicts sends a very powerful signal to those who placed any trust in them–They are not to be trusted at all, and history proves that truth over and over. That’s why they’re Outlaws–they’ve disobeyed their basic law of the land they swore to uphold and properly manage–and that was written.

Kentuckian @ 44, 56:

There may be reasons that the fatwas of former Grand Ayatollahs Khomeini and Khamenei were never written down and formalised. Formally written fatwas would have been subjected to legalistic interpretation and whatever Khomeini or Khamenei might have originally meant in saying the fatwas would be lost in endless interpretations or deliberately obscured by others.

The respect for these Grand Ayatollahs and their opinions by Iranian govt officials must have been such that the officials decided to err on the side of extreme caution in interpreting these leaders’ statements, for fear of losing their jobs and careers.

This is probably the best explanation I can think of at present and you are free to reject it. We are dealing with a society in which oral pronouncements by senior religious authority figures traditionally were taken at face value and not subjected to discussion and dissection. We can only go by surviving first hand witnesses  describing the context in which they heard the fatwas.

I must say that Karlof1 did himself no favours in dismissing your initial question in the way he did.

Ushakov has provided his synopsis of Putin’s encounter with Kushner and Whitkoff. There’s no official English translation yet, so the Russian will need to suffice. Here’s the machine translation:

Y.Ushakov: I would like to inform you about today’s event.

Colleagues, it is well known that on behalf of the President of the United States, his Representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited Moscow on September 5 to continuation of the dialogue on the settlement of the crisis in Ukraine and discussion of other topical issues. This is their eighth visit to our country.

The American representatives were received by President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, and at the very beginning of the conversation, publicly assessed this mediation channel and the role of American negotiators. Of course, he conveyed his best wishes President Donald Trump, thanking him for his efforts in the context of the Ukrainian settlement and a sincere desire to assist in reaching mutually acceptable solutions as soon as possible.

What can be added to what Vladimir Vladimirovich said? Conversation lasted more than three hours, or rather three hours and ten minutes. She was meaningful, constructive, extremely frank and trusting. Conversation on extremely serious issues continued both at the working
and in the informal atmosphere at the dining table.
If we talk about the essence of the discussions that took place, then from the Russian The parties gave clear and exhaustive assessments of the situation developing during the conducting a special military operation. In particular, real successes were noted of the Russian army in advancing in the war zone, expressed confidence in achieving the goals set, and, of course, emphasized the need to eliminate the all the root causes of the conflict.

Our President confirmed his intention to continue working together with the Americans to find political and diplomatic solutions. Steve Whitkoff and Jared Kushner promised to use them during tomorrow’s contacts in Kyiv observations and assessments that we have personally received from the President of Russia concerning reaching a lasting peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.

By the way, our American colleagues have made serious preparations for this trip. They not only expressed their traditional interest in the speedy end of hostilities, but also formulated a number of considerations regarding the possible ways of settlement.

It is worth noting that the Americans took note of one point that our President specifically drew attention to, namely, that the Kyiv The regime has already stopped hiding its essence and is engaged in the reburial of some of the most important Nazi criminals.

The talks were not limited to an exchange of views on the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, but also discussed in detail the economic topics and possible large mutually beneficial Russian-American projects.

In general, it can be said that the negotiations were timely and very useful for both parties. It was confirmed that the Presidents of our two countries will and continue to maintain personal contacts, as well as that the work through Steve Whitkoff and Jared Kushner will be continued.

Thank you for your attention, colleagues.

IRGC confirms previous US report that US naval assets were targeted, saying it has damaged those:

– Iran’s IRGC says its Aerospace Force targeted a U.S. aircraft carrier and destroyer with several ballistic missiles, claiming both vessels were “damaged” and “forced to flee the area of engagement.”

It warned that continued U.S. military actions would bring “devastating responses” from Iran’s Armed Forces.

This attack is the one that prompted CENTCOM to strike three Iranian tankers on Saturday. CENTCOM in their statement on Saturday said that a U.S. aircraft carrier and guided-missile destroyer “successfully evaded multiple Iranian attacks.” Tabz

Look any meeting between Kushner and Russians is a good thing, simply because he is a direct line to the President of the USA.  Unlike state officials  they have duty to other people and organisations be it government departments, military or Congress. Thus things can be discussed that are not possible in a phone conversation or even a formal meeting President/President.

Now first let me say I am not holding out much hope because essentially the POTUS (all of them) are little more than figure heads, with very limited real power.  However such discussions are still very useful.  I doubt very much if anything will be achieved, although I do think Trump was (still is) genuine enough about wanting to end the Ukrainian conflict.  Not so Iran.

All three ships are civil carriers. They were unarmed. None of them was attempting to break the U.S. blockade or in any way involved in military activities. None of them was in any way a justifiable military target.
Why does this matter?
The U.S. military is breaching the rules of war.

Short or selective memories I guess.  Iran attacked many unarmed commercial civilian ships in the Gulf way back in March, and these attacks were called war crimes by human rights groups.   And Iran has claimed that military control of the Strait is their biggest weapon.  It probably is, and I imagine most here support that.  So this whining about the new US attacks on commercial tankers as war crimes is hypocritical.  Likewise, the Houthis have attacked numerous commercial ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, and some were deadly; was there any criticisms of those attacks as war crimes?

“An activist throws his Adidas shoes in the trash, rejecting the brand’s decision to sign an Israeli soldier and whitewash his image, while thousands of Palestinian children in Gaza continue to live [and die] with amputations caused by Israeli bombardment during Israel’s [ongoing]  genocidal war on the Strip…”

@95 bodega

All ships I know of were considered either aiding and abetting genocide or supporting countries practicing aggression against Iran.

Not saying right or wrong, but within legal justification.

That is one reason why the strait is closed, to impede hostile nations resupplying, beyond direct civilian use.

That includes plain commercial traffic.

The genocide in Palestine is continuing, few nations are exempt from cumplicity, their commercial traffic is not exempt from being a legitimate target in terms of sanctioning that activity.

The UN has become ineffective and corrupt, and no longer a reference for international approval of implemention of such sanctions.

Karlof1 @ 76:

Thanks, point taken.

Thanks also for your other reply @ 69. I’ll certainly consider watching the Chinese movie once it is released here.
