Moon of Alabama Brecht quote
September 22, 2026
New York Times Misreports Gen.Sec. Guterres’ UN Speech

Farnaz Fassihi is the New York Times reporter for the United Nations. She often also writes about Iran.

Earlier this month her report  How Iran’s Hard-Liners Prevailed and Sabotaged U.S. Peace Deal (archived)  claimed that that a former official without current responsibilities, one Hussein Taeb, had ordered the bombing of three tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. An act, which she claimed, had derailed peace efforts:

This account of the inner deliberations of Iran’s leadership is based on interviews with eight Iranian officials, three members of the Revolutionary Guards, four former officials and a review of dozens of speeches and comments by government officials and military generals from June to September published in the Iranian press and social media. The officials interviewed for this article spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss delicate issues of national security.

As if any of those people would speak to a NY Times reporter who is not even in Iran …

The report was widely mocked as mere fantasy by various experts on, and from Iran:

Seyed Mohammad Marandi @s_m_marandi – 15:37 UTC · Sep 13, 2026

Fake news by the person who falsely claimed in September 2022 that Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei was gravely ill.

Such decisions are not made by individuals.

Today Farnaz Fassihi has written from her original beat, the headquarter of the United Nation:

U.N. Leader Uses Final Speech to Issue Stark Warning – NY Times, Sep 22 2026

António Guterres, the secretary general of the United Nations, delivered his final address to the General Assembly in New York on Tuesday morning, laying out the perils the world faces and urging leaders to reverse course before it was too late.

Mr. Guterres, 77, issued a blunt assessment of the state of global affairs, warning of the need to deal with urgent challenges at a time when the divisions between nations only seem to be growing.
…
Mr. Guterres called out Russia by name for invading Ukraine and causing human suffering by disrupting global food and energy supply chains with its war. But he made no direct mention of the United States and Israel’s war on Iran and the turmoil and civilian casualties that it has caused.

Instead, he spoke only in broad terms of unspecified regional confrontations.

“Across the Middle East, conflicts are cascading,” Mr. Guterres said. “Enough is enough.” He called for all nations involved to return to diplomacy.

The emphasized quote is a highly misleading.

Guterres spoke at length about the main conflict in Middle East, especially about the Israeli genocide in Gaza.

The New York Times, and Farnaz Fassihi, make no mention of this (video):

Peace is far more than the absence of conflict. It is the presence of restraint of power by law. It is the recognition, as enshrined in the UN Charter, that force cannot be the final arbiter of whose lives, rights and future matter.

Today that principle is under profound strain. Across the Middle East, conflicts are cascading. So-called ceasefires have amounted to little more than “lesser fires” – with civilians continuing to pay the price.

Enough is enough.

I appeal to the leaders in this Chamber to maximize this High-Level week for de-escalation and dialogue. Together, let’s send a clear message from this Hall:

The fighting must stop. Humanitarian aid must flow. And navigational rights and freedoms must be fully restored in accordance with international law.

Amid the turmoil engulfing the region, we must not lose sight of the devastating situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

It is nearly three years since the abhorrent terror attacks by Hamas on 7 October.

What followed was an onslaught on Palestinians in Gaza, with a scale of killing and destruction unlike anything I have witnessed in all my years as Secretary-General.

The International Court of Justice has issued legally binding provisional measures in the case entitled: “Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip.”

In an advisory opinion last year, the Court was clear that the United Nations needs to be allowed to perform our mandates in Gaza – and for our staff and humanitarian personnel to be protected.

All parties must comply with international law and the Court’s orders.

Meanwhile violence, displacement and settlement expansion by Israel in the Occupied West Bank are bulldozing the path to peace and raising the spectre of ethnic cleansing. We cannot allow the two-State solution to disappear before our eyes.

The above passage of the speech received wide applause.

The New York Times and Farnaz Fassihi summarize the above as Gutteres speaking only “in broad terms of unspecified regional confrontations”.

To do so is more than being mistaken.

And then there was Trump, who used the occasion to give a campaign speech, meant to appeal to the lowest information voters in the US, but delivered in front of 193 nations.
He sneered at the other leaders for talking about peace (which is what the UN is supposed to support, so those are appropriate speeches), and asserted that he is the actual peace president, because he stopped 8 wars.
THEN he threatened Iran, saying that he was going to make a decision very soon, whether to annihilate them or not. Again, to slavering war mongers that may fly, but it is not an appropriate thing to say at the UN.
Then he said that Iran refused to make a deal, with everyone there most likely knows is a lie.
Everyone saw him sign the deal at Versailles. Everyone knows who broke the deal.
To stand up there and claim that Iran must renegotiate the deal, when everyone knows who broke it, is downright embarrassing.

And then he bragged about taking oil from Venezuela.  He said there was a war, and the US won, and “to the victor goes the spoils”.

It’s downright embarrassing to be American.

Guterres was an Outlaw tool from the outset and didn’t merit a second term, His lies are many and continued during his final speech. It appears he felt the need to cover his ass by saying something truthful about Gaza, but he stopped far short of what must be said. That his falsehoods and the NY Times fake news occurred in tandem with the Fourth Fake News Forum in Moscow today I’m sure few knew about (I reported some of Lavrov’s remarks on the Ukraine thread earlier today) is slim poetic justice. As we know, Outlaw tools are cowards and one has already appeared on this thread, and I’m sure more will follow.

A new global governance institution is already taking shape and will benefit from the shortcomings of the previous two efforts. It too will arise from the ashes of the conflict to end hegemony, colonialism, imperialism, and exceptionalism that is now ongoing–the Third World War as many insist. It would’ve been fitting for Guterres to be the last UNSG.

So,  if anyone is expecting any kind of “reform”…for some fantasy “multipolar” new world order, odds are not looking good.

Rebeca Grynspan Mayufis[a] (born December 14, 1955) is a Costa Rican economist and diplomat who has served as Secretary-General of UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) since 2021, the first woman to hold that post. She previously served as Secretary-General of the Ibero-American General Secretariat from 2014 to 2021 and as Second Vice President of Costa Rica from 1994 to 1998, in addition to holding several cabinet and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) posts…”

He’s been a bit more outspoken these last few days, more like a summary of what UN was meant to mean but didn’t or couldn’t.

I suppose some will cling to UN clinging to two-state, few probably and only while it serves.

The article heading could just have been left as “The New York Times misreports”, and nothing would have been lost.

All the MSM outlets that once had reputations for being heavy hitters are now irreversibly declining, using past, sometimes genuinely good work as a basis to use to try and shore up their dissolving credibility.

Same with the BBC here in Britain, I can barely tolerate its news output these days, only tuning in for the locally-based bulletins and even those are infested with the globalist view of “political correctness”, how Ukrainian refugees are being made welcome by refugees from North Africa (nothing about the stabbings and the struggle for control of the drugs and prostitution trade); shock-horror stories about how the countryside is “inherently racist” which raised my eyebrows, it’s fields, trees, lanes and hills,  but apparently these inanimate entities are “inherently racist”.

What happened to media plurality?

Was in a doctor’s office waiting room yesterday. The usual fare of mags was available, Golf Digest (not that Gulf), Time, etc.
Was curious what Time had to say, or not say, about the Genocide. The mag was dated, Nov 2025.

Time had nothing, nada, zilch to say about Palestine or Gaza or the West Bank or Genocide. A glimpse into what history records in the future.

Isn’t Time known for “Time’s Person of the Year”? I just skimmed the list of past years.
Greta Thunberg was Time’s Person of the Year in 2019.
In 2025 she fell into the hands of the Genocidal, racist, thieving, warmongering, betraying Entity.

Donald Trump’s maniacal rant before the UN General Assembly today, complete with ridiculous braggadocio, narcissistic puffery, an almost unbroken line of absurd, demonstrable lies, open criminality, and deranged, murderous threats, should awaken even the most cowardly and complicit among world leaders that their attempts at appeasement of Trump and the tyrannical Axis that he leads can only result in further aggression, economic terrorism, murder, and genocide.

The world must unite to counter the threat and to defend peace, human rights, and the rule of law, which are, after all, declared purposes of the UN.

The Cuban delegates to the UN walked out when Trump insulted their nation while addressing the General Assembly. The rest of the UN members should have followed. They did not. The UN is not just ineffective. The UN allows Israeli crimes, US crimes, many crimes perpetrated by nations against other nations because the UN was designed as an instrument of great nation power rather than a democratic world body. Global South nations should resign and reconstitute another world body based on democratic principles without any additional authority provided to nations with large economies. Too many wars, mass murder events, and abuses of power have been perpetrated under UN auspices and its impotent authority now abets these crimes.

At the end of January, 2021, I was visiting Irkutsk, Russia.  NYT was reporting “Pro-Navalny Demonstrations sweeping Russia, quiet Siberian cities like Irkutsk saw residents take to the streets.” So I checked with my local friends and hotel manager about that.  They all said there was no such Navalny protest thing.  My hotel manager even took me to the street corner to show me the several protesters, who were still there and protesting about their paychecks.
How could NYT be so callous about facts is beyond me.

It was the Russians…

British PM Andy Burnham

“In recent years, we have seen industrial-scale assault by hostile actors on the information environment in the UK and that of many of our allies.

Russian agencies have used every means at their disposal to spread lies and disinformation and prey on people’s fears.

They’ve used bots and fake websites, falsified newspaper articles, forged the branding of 28 British organisations including universities and the BBC.

They’ve amplified far-right narratives and we have evidence that they tried to interfere with the 2019 general election

The Kremlin spends around £1.3 billion each year on manipulating information.

We’re talking about an insidious campaign that reaches into people’s homes and twists what they feel about their own country and community, creating a narrative of decline, stoking division and sowing despair.

Today, I’m asking our security chiefs in the UK to begin work on a new National Center for Information Defense to detect, attribute and disrupt these kinds of hostile state information attacks” Tabz

Saudi Arabia ‌has restarted operations at its East-West Pipeline and could resume exports from the Red Sea port of Yanbu later on Tuesday, three sources briefed on the matter said, as signs mounted of an increase in Middle Eastern oil flows.

The resumption of supplies on Tuesday helped to drive selling on global oil markets. Global oil benchmark Brent crude fell by more than $2 a barrel towards $97, its lowest since September 8……

……Reaching a rate of 40% of capacity will take ‌a couple of days and a full restart will take 6 to 8 weeks, a security source said. A separate oil industry source said a return to full pumping rates would take up to six weeks…..

“Any ruse’l do”

First read that as ‘Any russ’l do’ , which fits also maybe .

I think they are trying to make people paranoid or afraid, and it seems silly when viewed from outside, but it is also surprising how ‘trained’ people become when subjected to that kind of attempt in their own country by their own media and authorities. At the least it creates a distraction and a form of justification for implementation of stricter measures, or for certain kinds of spending.

When all said and done the UNGA is largely a debating society primarily designed not to disrupt the agendas of the veto-wielding ‘great powers’ on the Security Council.

It was aptly described by Sir Alexander Cadogan, one of the UN’s ‘founding fathers’ as ‘a place for lesser nations to blow off steam.’

[quoting Burnham’s lies]
*** Russian agencies have used every means at their disposal to spread lies and disinformation and prey on people’s fears.
They’ve used bots and fake websites, falsified newspaper articles ….***

Burnham accuses Russia of trying to do exactly what …. Burnham’s own Party, its multi-label clones in parliament pretending to be an “opposition”,  the regime’s civil servants infesting Whitehall, and of course the totally corrupt and morally voided mass-media …. all spend their time actually, indisputably, doing.

While a UK military the warmongering top levels of which are mostly stuffed with (very carefully selected) fantasists and psychopaths becomes ever more hysterical, and will no doubt happily revert to wokist excesses once Trump has been replaced with some equally lunatic “Democrat” politician.

Burnham is a zionist neoliberal blairite.

@65 Cynic

“We stand with Israel in the face of the ongoing threats, including from Iran, against Israel and Jewish people around the world.

But this does not justify the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza or the West Bank.

Far too many people have died, including so many children”

https://t.me/tabzlive/104674

“We want to see the suffering and death finally come to an end.

We want to see Israeli and Palestinian people living side by side in peace and security.

And we will do all we can to keep the hope of that possibility alive” Tabz

– Too many children have died

– Keep the hope of the possibility alive

– We stand with Israel in the face of the ongoing threats… against … Jewish people around the world

Unreal that they use this platform to try to sneak in such concepts

– Normalise the killing of children
– Mislabel genocide as future peace
– Justify “Israel” as a global jurisdiction

Being too cynical and mis-interpreting no doubt, but some would say the his words are grotesque.

“The only thing you can believe on a NYT article is the date at the top, and you should probably double-check that too.”

Many years ago I worked for a major newspaper (daily print run @ 650,000 – 700,000). One night suddenly it goes quiet as all the presses stop, so I stroll over to the main control room to see what is going on. There they were, the production manager and his offsiders all looking very concerned – the date was wrong on the front page. After a few ‘what are we going to do’s’ they decided to just let those copies go – so about 20,000 – 30,000 papers went out with the wrong date. I found it all most amusing and somewhat satisfying, couldn’t have happened to a nicer pack of arseholes.

This is a second date related incident – this is possibly the highlight of my ‘career’ working for that organization.

Usually about once a year, our highly respected and much loved leader, a certain Rupert Murdoch, would like to inspect his empire with a quick walk around. One night the word goes out that Rupert is in the building and make our way to compositors room – this was the time before computers when the comps would cut and paste onto the backing board to make up the pages (cut meant cut with a knife and paste was pasting with a special wax).
In swans Rupert with his entourage of arselickers, sycophants and assorted toadies. He walks up one of the rows and stops in front of the paste up for the front page and starts to turn red and just explodes, he’s completely loses it,  shouting and screaming abuse. The bootlickers and toadies are shitting themselves, and a hundred odd comps, printers etc. trying not to laugh.
He calms down after a couple of minutes, barks at someone to correct the date and storms out. All in all an entertaining night at work.

And yes – it was done deliberately.

It was aptly described by Sir Alexander Cadogan, one of the UN’s ‘founding fathers’ as‘a place for lesser nations to blow off steam.’
Posted by: John Gilberts | Sep 23 2026 1:31 utc | 53

So true. But it was also a place for big powers to blow off steam and find ways to talk to each other in (somehow) neutral grounds. Too bad it was not so neutral (NY).

Now the “united” world (vs confrontational world) is in the East and South (Brics, SCO etc) where nations are trying to cooperate. No ex-colonial powers in those groups, how strange.

Posted by: Cynic | Sep 23 2026 2:41 utc | 65

Exactly and quite predictable within Orwellian analysis of how easy it is to fool the people. It’s always amazing how much time goes into cultivating a certain image that is completely fake, then once elected it’s business as usual. I saw this coming with Burnham ‘the prole’s friend’ too as it was to a certain extent with Starmer and Blair before him.

I have a British friend here in Oz that like with Starmer, he was once again duped by Burnham’s concern for the poor UK worker he was going to help, but mostly he was convinced that he was a good and honest guy to vote for because he barracked for the same football team.

Happens every time.

Just like Starmer, once elected Burnham was on the phone to Zelensky the very next day. Another ‘Page Eight*‘ prime minister camouflaged to follow in Blair, Bozo, and Starmer’s footsteps. Dial a different number, but get the same connection every time.

* After the movie.

Also pretty sad to see Lula suddenly remembering about his anti imperialist principles. When Maduro was being kidnapped and the Cuban bodyguards slayed he kept himself very quiet. Now rumors say he’s about the receive a similar treatment with Alex Saab as the delator/ scapegoat.

⚡️🇮🇷🇺🇸 — Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi met US envoy Witkoff on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, according to an exclusive source cited by IRIB.

➡️ The meeting was reportedly held at the insistence of the US representative, and that conveying Iran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz was the reason for accepting Witkoff’s request. Iran’s firm positions were communicated to the American representative, the source said.

➡️ The source listed Iran’s conditions for reopening the Strait as the immediate lifting of the naval blockade, the immediate payment of all blocked Iranian assets, and an end to the war on all resistance fronts.

There’s a rather long winded prediction on LongBets.Org that UNSC will cease to function/exist by 2050. Unsurprisingly a bet with no challenger.

https://longbets.org/968/

UN is in a medically induced coma as irrelevant and corrupted as League of Nations. The P5 Nations of UNSC desperately need review to reflect 2027 and future existential dynamics than 1 or 2 lame duck WWII historic power structures.

China’s 2025 Global Governance White Paper has been taking steps to encourage UN reform:

The initiative aims to promote the building of a more just and equitable global governance system and work together for a community with a shared future for humanity. It is based on five core principles:-
The GGI will stay committed to:
Sovereign EqualityThis is the foremost premise of global governance.
International Rule of LawThis is the fundamental safeguard for global governance.
MultilateralismThis is the basic pathway of global governance.
People-Centered ApproachThis is the underpinning value of global governance.
Real ResultsThis is an important principle of global governance.

Global Governance InitiativeChinese President Xi Jinping proposed the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) on the “Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Plus” Meeting on September 1, 2025. The GGI aims to promote the building of a more just and equitable global governance system and work together for a community with a shared future for humanity.
“I look forward to working with all countries for a more just and equitable global governance system and advancing toward a community with a shared future for humanity.”
Xi Jinping Sept. 1, 2025

Original White Paper PDF link and 2026 updates PDF’s also here.

NOTE: By year end 2025 the initiative had participation of 60+ countries. By May 2026 support of 160 countries.

UN is presently a dead man walking or worse. Emperor Hallie Selassie’s notable speeches at UN and League of Nations read now as indictments that they will walk us into WWIII as ineffectively as they did WWI and WWII

I personally remain a fan of Selassie, Gandhi, and increasingly of Xi’s Global Governance initiative. If it’s adherence becomes conditional for trade with China – the world may stand a chance.

It’s kind of incredible many still get swept along by election wind bagging. We’d be wise to remember Greek theatre’s vicious political satire.

The proscenium is a metaphorical vertical plane of space. It serves as the frame into which the audience observes the events taking place upon the stage during a theatrical political performance.

The proscenium. The phrase “breaking the proscenium” or “breaking the fourth wall” refers to when a performer addresses the audience directly as part of the dramatic production.

The performance only ends when we exit the theatre en masse!

“The video shows Rajum drones targeting gatherings of Saudi enemy forces before the operation began, infiltration into routes leading to the Hays and Al-Wazi’iyah districts, penetration into key positions and control over strategic points in the Al-Wazi’iyah and Mocha districts, clearing of Jabal Dubas, Barashah, and Al-Hamra, and Al-Safinah hill around the city of Hays, clashes with and pursuit of Saudi coalition forces, and advances toward the Khalid bin Walid, Jabal Tariq, Al-Haymah, and Anbarah bases, along with several sniper operations by Yemeni Armed Forces units against elements affiliated with the Saudi coalition. <= your comment presents an example of a major problem with the global governance system (the nation state imprisonment system). Those who are the governed have no authority to even know what the Epstein class is up to.  Secondly the bottom up have absolutely no say in what or how the Epstein class decides to use the nation state governments they own and control for.
.

.
State secrecy, restricted vote, and closed access to constitution design and interpretations are top down structural impediments to bottom up democracy.
.

.
Restricting voting to vote-for-one-person from a list, of top down presented  “persons=corrupt leaders” should be replaced with a system that allows the bottom up to vote to establish goals, procedures, regulations and laws that professional management (not politicians) teams will be charged to successfully implement.
.

.
Secondly, IMO, to accomplish democracy: a Constitution which allows only those who govern to decide on the constitutionality of their own laws and behaviors etc is problematic?  Courts should be bottom up constituted “independent of government” institutions.
.

.
Top down design has enabled the implementors (those who have the wealth)  to corrupt the system and to dupe the world.
.

.
Imagine a baseball game where one team gets to move the bases and change the rules while the baseball game is in play..  One of its team members hits a fly ball into left field, while the Left fielder is waiting to catch the ball, the in-power team changes the requirements: a successful left field catch is not an out until after a successful catch, the outfield must throw the hitter out at first base.
.

.
Constitutions without provisions for the bottom up either: to block or to institute a change (an amendment) are a rich man’s security.  It seems a constitution which allows only top down initiated change to happen, makes it impossible for the bottom up to peacefully “toss the rascals out” no matter their incompetence, failures or corruptions and denies the bottom up any say in what or how the government is to be managed.

I’m vaguely amused by those posters who seem surprised or disappointed at Burhham’s pro-Zionist and Russia-phobic positions. It was always thus. That is why he was groomed as ‘leader’ once it was clear Starmer’s zero personality and intellect was so unpopular. While Burnham sneers at the Russian and German elections, he sees no irony in his own appointed, rather than elected position. Another dullard. As for a woman SG of the UN, maybe that’s the position aimed for by Van de Layen or Kallas. The UN is such a flawed institution, what with its politicised and controlled by the West bodies, I hold up no hope for progressive change. Removing its HQ from the US and limp, fascist countries like UK and France from being permanent members of the security council, would be the minimum steps needed to instil some belief in me, that this moribund organisation, can be salvaged.
Gutteres has been an arch reactionary, pro- Zionist toe-rag just like his last three predecessors. Good riddance.

Iran calls Trump ‘annihilation’ threat a sign of ‘strategic desperation’

Iran’s military has dismissed Donald Trump’s threat to “annihilate” the Islamic Republic warning it’s ready to respond with “crushing” attacks far more severe than earlier in the war.

In a statement carried by Mehr news agency, Iran’s General Staff accused the US president of using the UN podium at the General Assembly to justify “aggression”.

“Such words demonstrate America’s strategic dead end in its aggression against the Iranian nation,” it said. It described Trump’s repeated threats as “not a sign of power but a sign of their strategic desperation”.

The statement also warned Iran’s armed forces are ready to deliver strikes against the US and Israel that would be “more crushing and less predictable” than earlier in their war.

MOA, occasionally a non-YouTuber on Substack, always helps to support a viewpoint that has been forged through hard experience. For example, the lessons I have learnt have come from UNPF, UNMIK, UNAMI and UNAMA. At times, I’ve had the impression that the entire UN system is designed to fuel a conflict or allow it to smoulder. The meetings became increasingly cumbersome, and after Sergio’s incident, I really had no faith left in the UN’s clientelist system.

But MOA and a few other sources help me not to feel so alone. Nevertheless, the mainstream media are only ‘scanned’ once a day to avoid information overload and mental pollution. YouTube is too time-consuming for listening to a single dude, but I would recommend reading the minutes of the discussions in the UNGA and UNSC carefully. They are generally unfiltered because they are official protocols, not PR releases…

Next month begins the leader rotation in China and Xi steps down. You will remember a while ago Xi tried to change the rules to give himself another term. The old leaders voted no. Mao stayed on too long so lesson learned I guess.

There are four being considered. Each has a strong background and all are very different. It will be interesting as we get to know them.
In China the division between party and military is almost absolute. The Military get to appoint the deputy boss but plays no role otherwise.

A partial ceasefire just suitable USA diesel problems??? Cynical.

I pulled my subscription of the New York times more than 30 years ago. Used toilet paper is more valuable than the New York times rag or any other white Western judeo-christian propaganda rags.
