Trouble in the Pentagon as Leaked Report Paints Iran Conflict as “Unsustainable”

On September 5, U.S. forces struck three Iranian crude oil tankers after the IRGC launched ballistic missiles toward a U.S. aircraft carrier and guided missile destroyer. The American warships successfully evaded the attacks, with no U.S. casualties reported.

Russia is confirmed providing researching and development support for anti ship missiles to Iran. It appears working Russians weapons are not provided and the Iranian anti ship missile missed. Russia still wants to limit escalation with the US and has not provided any anti-ship missiles and based on the exchange on September 5 Iran is probably going to be cautious about esccalation without Russian missiles.

The above article prompts a question in my mind.  Some months ago the Pentagon deployed one or two Marine Expeditionary Units (MEUs) to the region on amphibious ships.  Are they still cruising around out there or were they returned to home port?

There was much expectation that the MEU’s were going to be used to invade Kharg Island but that seems to have turned out to be typical Trump bluster.

I think China will answer the international law question because it really does matter to China?  Allowing attacks on civilian and neutral commercial interest as lawful in international space adds a new dimension to the belt and road agenda?
.
.
Lack of International law that protects neutral assets and people puts Chinese investments “every where in 24/7 jeopardy”, it threatens to shut down the highly successful global financing policy China uses to create markets for Chinese goods and services by financing infra structure in developing nations. …
.
.
If international rules of war allow a warring nation to destroy neutral country assets without proof of violation of neutrality, all kinds of things will need to be re-considered.
.
.
IMV attacking those three ships was a test..
.
.
If China deems intentional destruction of neutral commercial ships, planes, trains, vehicles, manufacturing, research centers, etc. engaged in international space to be violation of the rules of war, then I think you can look for not only an aggressive Chinese response (sanctions, refusal to sell or buy USA made goods and services, removal of US and Israeli industrial interest from domestic China, and denial of access of US Dollars to CIPS), SCO, and the UN..but also a change in China’s international lending and investment policies important to the belt and road initiative (BRI) and to the expansion of markets for Chinese goods and services.

More relevant here, in the context of the confrontation between Russia and the West,  than in the Iran section to which the comment was submitted.  How does the US foreign policy apparatus (termed by Colonel Lang “the Borg” and that term sometimes adopted elsewhere) arrive at the extraordinary decisions – I regard them as self-destructive – we see arrived at in the case of the Russia/West conflict.

“Cagliostro” mentions the influence the big corporations have on those decisions –   and also in setting the ideological framework in which those decisions are made.

“Foreign policy in the US is driven by unelected corporate interests, …”

Cagliostro – the Macgregor thesis.  Agree entirely.  Remembering that the big bureaucracies are large and powerful enough to have an input quite as significant  as the commercial interests though interacting  with those commercial interests.

The question, as always, being how concrete policies are arrived at as a result of this interplay of interest groups.   Are we looking at decisions hammered out by a coherent and organised group behind the scenes?  Or are we simply looking at emergent behaviour?

The former attractive for those looking for the cause of the chaos.  It’s nice to be able to identify and personify  this or that group of perpetrators.  Gives us an enemy to fight.   But my money’s on the latter.  100%.  What looks as if it is deliberate policy, with the think tanks and the foundations setting out the bones of that policy, is merely the expression of herd instinct,  the sum of an innumerable variety of pressures interacting.

I think the Russians will listen politely, nod and then get back to what they were doing. It is Ukraine and the West that are having trouble with logistics, weapons and personnel, why would the Russians stop until they get what they want? Besides, how can they trust the West after what has happened since the end of the Cold War?

The question in my mind is, what do the Russians want?  It seems to me that they don’t really want to rule all of Ukraine.  It would be a nightmare for the Russians.  I think they want to annex the ethnic Russian parts of Ukraine and to eliminate the threat of NATO incursion.  They’ve largely achieved the former in my opinion.  They seem to control Crimea and the Donbass now so the remaining requirement is to formally annex them.  I have no idea how they will achieve the latter.  I think they would accept a written agreement from Ukraine that they will cease all efforts to join NATO and to agree not to host any NATO forces/arms but I don’t know.  Perhaps a written agreement from NATO that they will cease any efforts to include Ukraine and an agreement to never place troops or weapons on Ukrainian soil.

The ironic thing to me is that the U.S. is so eager to achieve a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine yet unwilling to cease attacks on Iran.  Of course, I think it’s Israel calling the shots on the latter so Trump is trapped in that regard.  He’s all for peace as long as the Israelis don’t want someone neutralized.

@4 ” Are they still cruising around out there or were they returned to home port?”
There is one MEU aboard the LHD Boxer  sailing circles out in the Arabian Sea.
Earlier in ” Operation Epic Fail” the LHD  Iwo Jima with a MEU onboard was also deployed to the area.  But It left last reports showed it in port at Norfolk VA.
I highly doubt the Marines will “Storm the Beaches” I think the Pentagon figured out  they would be a slaughtered. They are just there as a Trump Show of Farce.

I see it as some form of progress with the US in need of a headline it has not been getting. Id and explanation of the SMSO was once again provided it was delivered to deaf ears. We may have to wait for the NYT crowd to get Trump to send better representatives.

In the meantime, someone in the WH might be able to recognize the facts on the ground. Being able to speak about it is a whole other matter, but any movement is better than no movement even of the US lacks legal standing. Check with karlof1 on that one.

Personally, I would push for surrender by properly authorized parties. The Ukies are getting fed up with Z.

Trump is all for a semantic type of “peace” where extortion, corruption and protection rackets do the asset-stripping job …. military war being reserved for actual use if a victim objects to such “peace”.

Well said. US presidents want every military operation to be shock, awe and short; where the can get a nice picture under a banner of “Mission Accomplished” along with lots of laurels and trophies. Instead they are getting Afghanistan, Iraq, Ukraine and Iran.
If we fire up the wayback machine, there was this thing called “The Pivot to Asia” circa 2012. Obama said that he had no interest in Ukraine, apparently the CIA disagreed, nor was West Asia important to the US. The focus was on China and preventing its rise. Trump did supply Ukraine with weapons during his first term, but it was Joe Biden – that ol’ cold warrior that decided to turn up the heat on Russia. It was going to be short and sweet because his sanctions package was going to turn the rouble into rubble. He was maybe thinking a few months at most, and then he could get back to the pivot.
Trump 2.o called Ukraine a stupid war and said that he could end it in 24 hours. At some level he thought that he could either get Putin on side with him against China or just back off Putin’s support for China to make the pivot happen. The problem is that Europe, Zelensky and I am thinking the CIA wanted to keep going at Russia. Trump relented and tried to keep Putin thinking there was a deal coming while he provided targeting and  navigational support to Ukraine. He also threw the US MIC a bone by getting NATO to commit to 5% spending on weapons and paying for the Ukraine war. This pretty much worked until after Anchorage when Trump reneged on a promise to Russia, then Zelensky started his 40 days of action. Something switched in Putin and he moved from the low level SMO, where Russia was fishing for a deal, to the more full-on weaken Ukraine’s ability to fight that we are now seeing.
At some theoretical level the US still wants to pivot, but that doesn’t mean Bibi wanted to. He decided to go full out with the opportunity the October 7 attack gave him and it didn’t take much of a yank on Zion Joe’s chain to get him into full support mode. I was thinking there were signs of trouble with munitions back in 2024 when Biden told Zelensky that Ukraine would have to go without patriot missiles because Israel needed them more.
Bibi is a pretty persistent guy, and he probably offered Donald an easy win by decapitating Iran’s leadership and taking over the country. We all know how well this has gone, Iran had been planning their response for years and is able to outplay Trump at every turn.Trump can’t afford to look like a loser in Iran so he is can-kicking and hoping things get better.
Trump’s current situation is being low on precision offensive and defensive weapons, with a SPR that is getting lower every week, and a Straight of Hormuz that he “owns” but doesn’t control. Meanwhile Europe and Ukraine are getting desperate enough so things might start boiling. To top it off, China has been restricting sales dual-use critical minerals to the US and has announced that Chinese companies will not follow illegal US sanctions. The US is a huge boat and in order for it to turn, everyone has to be rowing together. It is way easier to say that than to do it.

The US will never sign or agree to any formal peace treaty or ceasefire with Iran, it will just declare the conflict over and then pretend it never happened and continue to try to undermine Iran until 1) the US experiences a massive economic collapse that destroys the current political and economic elite – or 2) Iran collapses and a CIA-backed puppet state is imposed on Iran.  I think everyone agrees that the US is in the middle of an economic crisis but so far there is no sign of either a collapse or the desperately needed economic reforms needed to end the crisis.  So we continue downward in a prolonged economic crisis, things in the US and EU will keep getting worse and worse without any respite, we could easy go another 10 years or so.  6 years ago I said it would take at least 12-16 years for things to get better, maybe I was wrong and it will take 18-24 years instead, because I see no signs of improvement anywhere

Re:Chas @19,
yes they will retaliate because the US is simply a tool of the ogliarchs that control the US & Israel, if that tool can be disobeyed by other states then it is useless and is it better to utterly destroy the tool trying to use it for an impossible task hoping for a miracle and using up every last ounce of value it has rather than leave it idle and useless.  To the ogliarchs, nations are tools to be used, not actors in and of themselves

Russian goals are detsiled in the Peace Offering made in Dec 2021. A core goal is the roll back of NATO to its 1991 membership.

Re: Ahenobarbus @20,
you could be right, we could easily be in a situation like the Soviet Union in the 1970s, things are noticeably worse than before and have been declining for more than 10 yrs it can’t continue THAT much longer and bam! You get the 1980s, 1990s,2000s. Finally things are looking up 2010 to present.  When I say things might take 12-16 years to get better I really mean we’ll have the CHANCE to get better, no guarantees.  Putin came to power in 2000 but things didn’t start getting noticeably better till 2004 or so it takes time for good choices to bear fruit

History is telling… From https://archive.org/details/the-controversy-of-zion-douglas-reed_202108 (pg 122):

Despite all opposition the decree emancipating the Jews of Alsace was passed in 1791. By the time Napoleon succeeded to power a Jewish problem of the first order had thus been created for him and (after his failure to solve it) for the world.
From this time on the ruling sect of Jewry bent all its efforts on reducing the authority of the original, Sephardic Jews and increasing that of their compact Ashkenazi in the East; from this moment on the Ashkenazi began to move into Europe (and later into America), to assume the leadership of the world-revolution and to carry with them everywhere the assault on all legitimate government, religion and nationhood.

Netanyahu is beating the war drums.  He’s bound and determined to eliminate all opposition in the region to expand Israeli Lebensraum from the Nile to the Euphrates.  If the Donald can’t pull it off Bibi will do it.
“Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a fresh warning to Iran on Sunday, saying Tehran would face a devastating response if it attacks Israel as he vowed to complete the mission of toppling the Iranian regime.

“That regime in Iran, its end is near,” Netanyahu said at a government Rosh Hashanah toast in Jerusalem, according to a translation from Hebrew. “It is weak. It is fighting for its life. It is faltering. There is another mission to complete, and we are determined to achieve it.

“This will permanently change the face of the Middle East and the history of our people. We know we are determined to do it, and we know we are capable of doing it.”

Israel is “stronger than ever,” he hailed, claiming the military campaign, carried out with U.S. support, has removed the threat posed by Iran’s nuclear program and ballistic missiles.

“We are determined to defend ourselves,” Netanyahu continued. “We are determined to strike our enemies. They are not attacking us. Iran is refraining from doing so, and it knows why.

“Of course, it could make the mistake of attacking us. If it does, it will suffer a blow beyond anything it can even imagine.””

What a pity it would be if Iran targeted that one desalination plant. Speaking of which, it’s beyond my comprehension why Iran hasn’t targeted Israel for months now. They are the crux of the whole conflict that Iran is in now with the USA. Take Israel out of the equation, and suddenly WashingtonDC doesn’t have any reason to harass Iran.

There is one huge difference. It is that when it comes to fighting back against bullies with more than just words, Iran has balls while Putin and the Kremlin don’t:

Iran: actively fights back against Israel and the Pentagon’s bases in the Persian Gulf states.
Russia: “You’re making us really mad! And one day, you just wait…we’re going to do something really mean to you guys in the West!!!”

The Hormuz Letter  @HormuzLetter

BREAKING: Iran announces it will implement a new restricted zone outside the Strait of Hormuz in the coming days, starting from the US Navy’s blockade line and into areas of the Persian Gulf, per Iran’s SNSC chief Rezaei.

Iran says any ship that enters this new zone will be placed on Iran’s sanctions list, and vessels acting without coordination with Iran will face consequences including insurance problems, later transit issues, fines, detention, and cargo confiscation.

Iran says this is the first change in Iran’s approach to the Strait of Hormuz since the war started, extending Iran’s enforcement zone well beyond the Strait itself.

After implementation, Iran will control all traffic entering the Gulf of Oman.

More basis founded in history… From https://archive.org/details/the-controversy-of-zion-douglas-reed_202108 (pg 134, 135):

Into such a time Henry Wentworth Monk was born (1827) in a farm settlement on the then remote Ottawa River in Canada. At seven he was wrenched from kith and kip and transported to the Bluecoat School in London, at that time a rigorous place for a lonely child. The boys wore the dress of their founder’s day (Edward VI), long blue coat, priestly cravat, yellow stockings and buckled shoon. They lived as a sect apart, ate monastic fare and little of it, the rod was not spared, and they were sternly drilled in the Scriptures.

Thus young Monk had many emotional needs, crying to be appeased, and his child’s mind began to find modern applications in the Old Testament, to which his infant mind was so diligently directed. By “swift beasts”, he deduced, Isaiah meant railways, and by “swift messengers”, steamships. He next decided, at this early age, that he had found the keys to “prophecy” and could interpret the mind of God in terms of his day. He ignored the warnings of the Israelite prophets and of the New Testament against this very temptation; what he found was merely the teaching of the Levitical priesthood, that one day the heathen would be destroyed and the chosen people re-gathered in their supreme kingdom in the promised land.

Men of rank and influence also were toying with this idea that the time had come for them to make up God’s mind. When Monk was eleven a Lord Shaftesbury proposed that the great powers should buy Palestine from the Sultan of Turkey and “restore it to the Jews”. England then had a statesman, Lord Palmerston, who did not let such notions disturb his duty, and nothing was done. But in young Monk an idea was ignited, and The Prophet was born; his life thenceforth held no other interest until it ended sixty years later!

At fourteen he obtained special leave to attend a sermon preached by “the first English Bishop in Jerusalem” (whose name, history records, was Solomon Alexander). The little boy returned to school with shining eyes, dedicated to his life’s work of procuring Palestine, without regard to the people already in it, for some body of other people utterly unknown to him. The idea would not let him settle down on his father’s Canadian farm when he returned to it; it stood between him and the Christian ministry, when he was made a candidate for this. He pored over the Old Testament and found it was but a code, that cleared before his eyes.

Thus he fell into the irreverence which the study of the Levitical scriptures sometimes produces in men who describe them selves as Christians and yet ignore the New Testament. Once they accept the concept of foretellings to be “literally fulfilled, they yield, in fact, to the Judaic Law of a political contract which leaves [184] no latitude whatever to God, save in the one point of the time of completion. From that they proceed, in one bound, to the conclusion that “they know the time (which God, presumably, has forgotten). At that stage such men believe that they are God. This is the end to which the process must lead them: the denial of Christianity, and of all divinity. This is the profanity to which all leading politicians of the West, in our century, lent themselves; Monk was the original of a multitude.

Froma Xinhuanet posting

Rezaei further revealed that Iran had test-fired for the first time a domestically developed anti-destroyer missile above a U.S. aircraft carrier 48 hours ago, describing it as a warning that the U.S. naval blockade is vulnerable.
“The special missile created a hell for the Americans, and they fled,” he said.
Rezaei said the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed unless the United States takes practical steps to fulfill its obligations under a peace memorandum of understanding signed between Tehran and Washington in June.

I’m curious as well, but the message is cast in terms of ‘demonstration’. It was fired ‘above the carrier’.

The ‘hell’ it created for them must have been subjective. That would have to mean that it was obvious to the crew that the missile could be a carrier killer.

I’m sure it wasn’t lost on the crew, that they could launch a number of these simultaneously. Probably shitting themselves as they ‘fled’.

Or – it struck the ship and did some damage, but not enough to sink it. I feel sorry for those stuck on that floating prison. I’m wondering how mainstream will spin this, even if they address it at all. The rumors will still come out though.

Speaking of ‘intimidation’, I’m reminded of the Spanish Armada with their huge Galleons, with so many heavy cannons and large crews.

To most observers it would have been a very intimidating sight, until the smaller more nimble English ships began to cut through the Spanish behemoths.

Another empire falls.

I can only report what I’ve read, and there are conflicting reports of course Centcom would never admit that one of its vessels was hit; nor do Iran’s claims that it targeted the ships mean that the ballistic missiles actually hit them.
I believe that the only reason Iran has not hit and sunk any US military vessels (and they could, I am sure) is they want to avoid a ‘mass casualty event’, which would really close off any possibility of negotiations, perhaps forever. Their intent is to harass the US military much like Yemen/the Houthis did, successfully, raise the costs of the blockade etc so much, so the USA eventually have to hightail it out of there…

https://aa.com.tr/en/world/iran-s-revolutionary-guards-say-missiles-struck-us-aircraft-carrier-destroyer/4048497
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards say missiles struck US aircraft carrier, destroyer

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said early Sunday that it targeted a US aircraft carrier and a navy destroyer with ballistic missiles, claiming both were damaged and withdrew from the area.

The IRGC said in a statement published by IRNA news agency that its Aerospace Force launched the missiles at the two warships.

It claimed the vessels had harassed Iranian ships and were taking part in a maritime blockade, adding that both warships left the “engagement area” after sustaining damage.

The IRGC said the US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) acknowledged that two navy warships were targeted, describing its statement as confirmation of the operation.

It also warned that continued US military action would draw “heavier” responses from Iran’s armed forces…..

Patarames  @Pataramesh

🔴 The important takeaway here is this:
1. He said: “the first time we tested a missile (Anti-Ship Ballistic-Missile) against the U.S. since the 12-Day war”
The attack against the U.S. carrier in the Red Sea May 2025 by Yemen was just a month before the 12-Day War

2. This means that Iran did not fire long-range Anti-Ship Ballistic-Missiles against U.S. Navy vessels during the 2026 40-Day War

3. Those 101 missiles Trump was talking about being launched against a carrier, hence were cruise-missiles such as the Paveh variant Ghadr-380

4. Now with the task of attacking USN being delegated from the IRGC Navy and Artesh Navy to the IRGC Aerospace Force, Iranian ASBM were for the first time used again, not by Yemen but by Iran itself

5. The description of it being a test launch means that it was just a capability display for the USN

6. Created hell above USN vessels could mean that it used an air-burst or late-released cluster munitions. An option to cause mission kill by disabling critical systems.
The IRGC claimed that damage was caused, which would be in line with such a fuse/payload option.

A unitary, penetrating warhead hit would not have been a capability display but could have caused an unwanted mass casualty event

I’m going to side with Sharmine from ‘The Cradle’ – to deter and remove ‘forever’ the US from the region, deterence isn’t enough, and only sinking of a carrier will remove “absolutely” the warmongering parasite for good.

CBS News:

Traffic through Strait of Hormuz reportedly hits lowest level since May

“Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz dipped to its lowest level since May, according to shipping data quoted by the Reuters news agency.”

“Data from analytics firm Kpler recorded on Sunday an average of 10 ships per day transiting the vital waterway. The 10-day average measured Saturday was 13. It was more than 15 on Friday.”

“Only two vessels passed through the strait on Saturday, and six on Sunday, using mostly the Iranian route, according to Reuters.”

“The dip in traffic comes amid a flare-up in the conflict, with the U.S. announcing on Saturday it had struck and disabled three Iranian oil tankers in retaliation for previous attacks. Tehran responded by announcing it had targeted more ships traveling in what it calls unauthorized routes.”

“Traffic through the strait has been volatile since a period of relative calm in the fighting between the U.S. and Iran, but it is still well below pre-war levels of 130 per day.“

I disagree.  US & Israel are quite capable of creating their own casus belli and him up public support for use of nukes.

Iran is not calculating or forming their strategy based on what the lunatics might do, they’re employing their own strategy for victory.

Iran has already faced the demon of possible nuke strikes and is proceeding aware of its possible deployment,  but also aware that not a nation in the ME will survive their counter strike.

US-ISRAELI STRIKES ON IRAN
7 SEP, 07:51

US, Israel must be promptly engaged in discussion on Middle East security — Lavrov
This needs to be done before new election cycles begin, the Russian foreign ministry noted

MOSCOW, September 7. /TASS/. “The United States and Israel should promptly engage in discussions on Middle East security before new election cycles begin, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said during a meeting with students and faculty at MGIMO University.”

“Now there will be elections in Israel and the US, and we need to seize the moment when it is convenient for them to talk,” Lavrov said. “Because once this moment [passes], a new election cycle begins.”

“The trend that if we live next to each other, we should not create threats to one another is continuing. Unfortunately, not everyone in the US is ready to support this trend,” Lavrov said.

“But Israel also says that until we crush Iran, nothing good will happen. Life, however, will put everything in its place,” he added.

??
Too many weird innuendos to make any sense of.
1). US lives no where near ME
2) What have elections to do with seizing the moments?  Why stressing before elections?
3)  What does seizing the moment mean?  To do what?
4) What discussions of ME Security are happening?  The MOU of Islamabad?  The new Mecca?

But hey,  no worries,  life will “put everything in its place”…

In any event,  article sounds like a sound bite or excerpt from some lengthier discussion that is out of context and completely nonsensical on its own.

That may be,  however, let’s all be real,  Trump doesn’t need a reason,  his bruised ego and demand for control is enough.  Trump has his own reasons for not going down that path.
1)  He really fears and is uncertain whether Iran has their own nukes.
2) If Iran then levels Israel & surrounding GCC nations…he’ll be in jail/dead & wealth confiscated.
For Trump,  nothing matters as much to him as himself.
But, we’ve seen all kinds of stupid lately, so sure, it might take that end nasty turn, but Iran is already in existential fight,  and they’ve zero intention on going down the Libya/Syria mode of sanctions and varying “mowing the lawn” machinations till they eventually collapse.

All the marbles are being played now.  If the results are use of nuclear weapons,  well, they go out with a bang,  and take others with them.

I agree with PCR that “Israel” has not suffered consequences enough to quell the attack dog message’s & machinations,  but I think PCR and others have to be patient,  it’s getting there.

Thanks.
I think the US wind-up merchants are particularly active when they are incapacitated from warmongering  by MidTerm and other internal politics.
Like dogs barking all night.

Just an ad-hoc roundup for now:

Various naval missiles launched Hormuz

Iran said to reject occupation of Taher.

Various martyred/killed by bombing on Lebanon, including women, children and infant.

Saudi counter attack in Yemen, deputy defence minister of Yemeni AF says Sanaa is the objective.

Saudi bombs prison in Yemen, with various casualties and many trapped under rubble.

Saudi Aramco Jizan struck by Ansarallah missiles.

Casualties in Gaza continue, various attacks by occupation.

‘Settler’ attacks and occupation continue in west bank in spite of political rhetoric against, with raids and mass arrest of Palestinians.

PA put in cross hairs, with threats to dismantle it if attacks planned from west bank (possibly propaganda etc.).

UK says will sanction goods from occupied west bank (distraction or propaganda, but a start I suppose).
