Inside The Fight Of MI6 And CIA Proxies Over Who Is To Lead Ukraine

This fight over the future of Ukraine is intensifying.

Not only on the frontline, or between local power centers in Kiev, but also between the security services of the Anglo-American ‘allies’.

On Wednesday Kiev experienced a gun fight between units of the main (military) intelligence service GRU and forces of the internal security service (SBU) of Ukraine.

The confusing incident has a multifold background. Events in Ukraine attempts to summarize the reasons:

First, the old conflict between the SBU and the GUR. In this case, it’s actually a question of the SBU and the new GUR leadership against the old leader of the GUR, Kirilo Budanov, and the legions of GUR warriors who remain loyal to Budanov. On the side of the SBU, we have its ruthless leader Oleksandr Poklad, also known as ‘the Strangler’.

Mapping onto this first conflict is a second one. On the side of the SBU is Zelensky’s power clan, which has long been frustrated with Budanov’s excessive ambitions. The fact that Budanov still wields a private army of prominent, ideologically fanatical warlords displeases the president and his private court. Budanov has also been trying to foil Zelensky’s plan to appoint the ultra-loyal Poklad as de jure head of the SBU. …

Third and most importantly, revenue. More precisely, competition over control of the highly lucrative scam call centre business, which employs around 60,000 Ukrainians and brings in $1 billion USD a month. The Europeans have been pushing Zelensky to crack down on the industry, which very obviously operates with the sanction of Ukraine’s ‘law enforcement’ agencies, particularly the GUR and SBU.

There have previously been such incidents between the GRU and SBU. One shootout was over the control of a luxury vacation retreat. Others over more valuable businesses:

Today’s shootout comes right as Zelensky announced a new law to target the scam call centres. Just in time, because over the past few months, there has been a spate of terrorist attacks and murders around the world, all linked to the GUR and its scam call centres — torture and decapitation in Bali, explosions in Monaco, and worst of all, naive European burghers scammed out of their savings. Constantly linked with this transnational web of violence is the GUR’s bizarre menagerie of fanatical warlords, along with more traditional mafia bosses.

These mafia like turf wars have long become normal in Ukraine.

But there is more behind the recent one than a hassle about phone scam revenues.

As head of the GRU Kirilo Budanov had become a serious competitor for the (acting) president Vladimir Zelinski. He was promoted away from the GRU, and thereby cut off from most of his resources and soldiers, to lead the office of the president. While this is a powerful position, the step was taken to keep Budanov under control.

Even deeper behind this is a fight between the Zelenski allies in the British MI6, and the CIA over who is to take the lead in Ukraine.

As Black Mountian Analysis writes:

The notion that Ukraine operates as a fully sovereign entity making independent decisions is contradicted by the pervasive influence of Western intelligence services, particularly Britain’s MI6. Ukraine’s wartime strategy is largely shaped from abroad, with British intelligence deeply embedded in the country’s military and political decision-making.

Zelenski, and the SBU, are more or less MI6 agents.

The CIA, and the White House behind it, want their man, Kirilo Budanov, to take control and to find some arrangement with Russia.

Zeleniski is supposed to be pushed aside.

Witness this broadside by the U.S. steered Atlantic Council in a recent Foreign Policy piece (archived):

[S]ince last summer, public unhappiness with the charges of corruption in the Zelensky inner circle and the recent firing of Fedorov has solidified the public’s turn away from Zelensky.
…
There are two ways of resolving this problem. The first—a wartime election—has little support among Ukrainians, remains logistically complex, and is currently illegal. The second is to reboot the system of governance by reducing presidential involvement in running the domestic government agenda, creating a government of national unity, and opening the door to a pool of effective and untainted officials from rival parties and the vast pool of effective officials whom Zelensky has dismissed because he saw them as potential competitors.

Unfortunately, nothing suggests that Zelensky can take such a step. … The time for centralized rule through a small group of cronies has long passed, and Western leaders and his own people should press him at every opportunity to take steps to ensure national unity and effective governance.

This line of thought has been promoted for a while by various western paid NGOs in Kiev. Zelenski is to be kept in place as a ceremonial head of state while the real business should be done by some kind of (U.S. controlled) committee.

Coincidentally (not) – just a day after the anti-Zelenski screed was launched via Foreign Policy, the New York Times published a pro-Budnaov piece:

After Fighting Russia Fiercely, He Wants to Forge Ukraine’s Path to Peace – NY Times, Sep 4 2026
Kyrylo Budanov, a decorated soldier and former military spy chief, advocates a negotiated settlement. Talks are expected to resume this month.

Mr. Budanov, 40, serves as President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff and is a lieutenant general in the Ukrainian military. As he advocates negotiation, he has little left to prove as a soldier who fought the Russians.
…
He served in a C.I.A.-trained unit in Ukraine’s defense intelligence agency whose head was assassinated in a Russian car bombing in Kyiv. In 2016, a machine gun bullet shattered Mr. Budanov’s elbow. He was treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland for months, as his arm was rebuilt. After the 2022 all-out Russian invasion, he helped mastermind some of Ukraine’s most audacious counterattacks.

Mr. Budanov still wears a military-style buzz cut and is known for piercing stares with his dark eyes. In an office adorned with a Christian icon painted on the ceramic plate of an armored vest, he pulled back the curtain a bit on the art of negotiating with mortal enemies.

Bodanov is portrait as one who could lead Ukraine towards peace with Russia (under U.S. conditions):

One of the main reasons Mr. Budanov took the job as chief of staff this past January, he said, was the opportunity to lead negotiations.

By that time, Mr. Witkoff and Russian and Ukrainian negotiators had whittled a 20-point peace plan to two key unresolved points: ..
…
In talks in Abu Dhabi, Mr. Budanov tried to set a new tone, he said.

He said he told the Russian delegation that it should set a goal, like designing compromises for postwar governance in the Donbas, and work toward it.

By February, he said, potential ideas included handing the area over to private military contractors, allowing Mr. Trump’s Board of Peace to rule it, or forming joint Ukrainian and Russian civilian administrations.

That nonsense proposal, which Budanov argued, must have come from the White House amateurs.

The shootout in Kiev was thus much more than a mafia discussion about business.

It was part of a fight over who will control Ukraine’s foreign policy. The MI6 and the CIA have each their own preferences.

But what is really interesting is that Moscow, it seems, has taken an active position in this:

Yaroslav Trofimov @yarotrof – 13:30 UTC · Sep 4, 2026

A Russian jet-drone (basically a cruise missile) just flew into the office of the head of Ukraine’s intelligence service SBU, Poklad, in the heart of Kyiv. He wasn’t killed but Zelensky has ordered a mirror retaliation whenever possible. …

bigger
The Russian (or GRU?) attack on Zelenski’s henchman Poklad, who tries to eliminated Budanov, comes as the White House, after a long pause, is reviving negotiations over Ukraine:

– US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner plan to travel to Kiev and Moscow soon, a source told TASS.
– In early September, a source told the agency that Witkoff and Kushner were intensifying their mediation efforts on Ukraine.
– Telephone contacts with the Ukrainian side have already been held, according to the source.
– Vladimir Zelensky said the day before that tentative dates for Witkoff and Kushner’s visit to Kiev had already been set.
– The visit could take place in the near future, he noted.

Witkoff and Kushner should interpret the ‘Russian’ drone attack against the SBU headquarter as a welcoming gesture.

As always, it’s only half the story; both sides were informed by Moscow that there was little of substance to discuss at the moment…

This implies that nothing new is likely to come from the US side, making the matter uninteresting.

Russia is running out of time before the mud season and winter set in; it apparently still has a number of things to take care of beforehand. And the plans being hatched by Kushner and company look—as is so often the case—like a bid to buy time. It’s similar to the tactics used regarding Iran: stalling for time while rearming… in the case of Ukraine, the goal is saving power plants, securing logistics, and—above all—reopening the sea lanes… one wonders why.

My latest on what the Europeans have planned for the Ukrainians Krieg Macht Frei, fighting the Russians to the last Ukrainian or “genocide by Russia” akin to “suicide by cop”. After that the Moldovans and Baltic States populations? Anything for the European oligarchy not to have to accept a Russian victory and a lasting peace. Birth rates in Ukraine are now at the most one quarter of death rates, and that excludes the reams of war disabled.

El Nino years bring warmer weather than usual in October and November, perhaps delaying the muddy conditions (the worst muddy conditions are actually during the spring melt). The Russians are also fully equipped with tracked vehicles while the Ukrainians have hardly any left. Also, mud affects urban fighting much less – e.g. in the Druzhkivka / Kramatorsk / Slovyansk agglomeration. The Russian army is very good at fighting in winter, this fact seems to get forgotten by many commentators.

Believe me, tracked vehicles don’t do much—if anything—in those conditions. I saw it firsthand: even tanks couldn’t free our equipment and ended up getting stuck themselves… and our bulldozers were tracked vehicles!

I’m from Central Europe, but I’ve never encountered mud this tough and sticky—the kind that seems bottomless, making it feel like it’s a meter deep. I lost at least five pairs of boots; they just got stuck and couldn’t be pulled out by any means. We strapped boards to our boots like snowshoes just to cross a field—about 60 meters wide—to reach the road… AND

It is incredibly exhausting to cover even a few meters off-road… and these aren’t paved roads, mind you; they’re more like gravel tracks that turn into a total quagmire.

Oh, and right—early spring is the worst time, but heaven help you if it rains a lot in autumn before the frost sets in; when it rains then, it pours for days on end without a break… in the area where the front line runs now—a bit further west—there’s a spot known as “The Pit.” I wonder why? That’s roughly where we were stationed over the summer, returning only after winter began… in the autumn, that area was actually a restricted zone.

Posted by: Exile | Sep 4 2026 17:12 utc | 17Yeah. But thinking back on it… it’s not the mud—or the clothes that get absolutely stiff from it—that’s the worst part. No, it’s the millions of mosquito-like insects; no matter where you stand or what you do, every square centimeter of exposed skin comes under immediate attack. I’d experienced something similar in the Siberian tundra before, but as a European, I’d only ever heard stories about that kind of thing happening in places like Africa. I never imagined something like that existed deep within Russia… but believe me, every cubic meter of air there is teeming with them.

1) Ratcliffe visiting Russia.
2) Witkof and Kushner visiting Russia.
3) Russian attacks on Odessa and the ukrainian Black Sea coast.
4) the drone attack on the headquarter of the SBU.
5) ……………………..

Especially 3) has some PROFOUND implications, comparable to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Am I right or am I wrong ? We’ll have to wait and see. But I have been never this optimistic before.

Thanks for the backgrounder b. That would explain why the wholly owned subsidiary of MI6, The Grauniad, is wailing and gnashing it’s teeth over the allegedly Russian strike on SBU HQ. In fairness, they also mentioned the SBU-HRU shoot out in a separate article but somehow made that Putler’s fault.

Of course no joining of dots took place. Not so much putting lipstick on the pig as pretending that there is no pig…and if one is found it’s Russia’s fault.

Posted by: ChatNPC | Sep 4 2026 19:17 utc | 28

I keep repeating myself, but the real issue now is no longer simply Ukraine. It is the entire European security architecture.

Russia has spent years arguing that the post-Cold War security order is clearly unacceptable to it : NATO expansion, Western military infrastructure moving eastwards, Ukraine’s military integration with the West, and the refusal to negotiate a new continent-wide settlement that Moscow believes would recognise Russian security interests.

The West, equally clearly, has no intention of accepting Russia’s preferred security order.

That is the fundamental collision.

Ukraine is therefore becoming less the cause of the confrontation than the battlefield on which a much larger argument about the future security order of Europe is being fought out.

And that is why the situation is becoming so dangerous. If Moscow concludes that there will be no negotiation over a new European security architecture, no meaningful neutrality arrangement for Ukraine, no limits on NATO’s military posture and no recognition of what Russia regards as its core security concerns, then it may conclude that the existing order can only be changed through coercion.

That is the judgment-day element of this conflict.

Russia then faces a stark choice: accept indefinitely a European security system it regards as strategically intolerable, or attempt to overturn that system by forcing the issue directly with NATO.

The latter would be extraordinarily dangerous, but it is becoming easier to see how the Kremlin could arrive at that calculation.

This is why I increasingly doubt that the war can remain permanently confined to Ukraine. Unless somebody is prepared to negotiate the wider security settlement, the underlying dispute simply has nowhere else to go.

And at that point, the question ceases to be whether Russia and NATO disagree over Ukraine. It becomes whether the European security order itself is going to be renegotiated peacefully — or tested by direct confrontation.

There is speculation on other platforms that the SUB building strike was an internal attack or false flag, not Russia.

Interestingly,  the Russian media reports the strike but is not taking credit.

They also point out that 2 non-functioning passenger aircraft at the Kyiv airport were struck today. So Zelensky (MI-6 and/or CIA) is attempting to provide a pretext to generate attacks on Russian Intel staff as well as escalate against Russia’s civilian aviation.

Perhaps that’s why John Ratcliffe visited Moscow, to tell Putin that if he got rid of Zelensky, Washington wouldn’t be upset.
Hasn’t anyone explained to the war criminals in Washington that only morons interrupt their enemies when those enemies keep making mistakes as Zelensky does. You’d think that as Washington wants to go to Moscow itself that it would look at what went wrong for others who tried it, but American Exceptionalism blinds them with arrogance.
Zelensky is the gift that keeps on giving what the Russians want. Just surprised Washington, London and Brussels haven’t worked this out and whacked Zelensky themselves. Shows just how cretinous Washington, London and Brussels really are.

@4 Roger Boyd.

I fully agree.

Furthermore, it seems people here still haven’t grasped the almost rigid seasonality of this war…

Over the last three years, the same pattern has repeated itself: Russian advances build momentum starting after the thaw, peaking between late November and early January (right in the dead of winter!).
From then on, the front remains virtually stalled until the end of the thaw—barring some suicidal Ukrainian counter-offensive.

This pattern has repeated year after year, and it surprises me that so few people (including MI6 strategists) notice it.

There is a more fundamental problem here: the two sides may not even regard the Witkoff/Kushner channel as serving the same purpose.

From the American perspective, it increasingly looks like crisis management — keeping communications open, establishing guardrails, preventing miscalculation and using personal diplomacy as a means of de-escalation. That may be perfectly rational from Washington’s point of view.

But the Russians appear to have treated precisely these channels as an opportunity to obtain movement on the substantive issues: Ukraine, NATO’s military posture, sanctions and, ultimately, the wider European security architecture. Judged against that objective, the process has produced very little.

That distinction matters enormously. Washington may regard the continuing existence of the channel itself as a success because it reduces the danger of uncontrolled escalation. Moscow may regard the same process as increasingly pointless because it has failed to alter any of the conditions Russia says are driving the confrontation.

If that is where we have arrived, then whatever Witkoff and Kushner do next may have diminishing relevance to Russian strategic calculations. They might still help manage a crisis after it occurs, but there is no obvious reason to assume that another round of personal diplomacy, telephone lines and “procedures” will prevent Moscow from contemplating further escalation with NATO if the Kremlin concludes that none of its substantive concerns can be addressed through negotiation.

That is the real danger: a mechanism designed by the Americans to contain escalation may be mistaken for a mechanism capable of preventing it.

The GRU and SBU are fighting it out, and then RUSSIA decides to attack the head of the SBU with a drone?

I think that what you hint at is more likely.  It was the GRU, who then blamed Russia.  Or did they?   Maybe it was just the media that blamed Russia.

First they send drones to Germany, then to the SBU headquarters.   Those damn Russians!   Always trying to stir up trouble.

After [Ukraine] the Moldovans and Baltic States populations? Anything for the European oligarchy not to have to accept a Russian victory and a lasting peace.

Yes to your assessment of EUropean elites. But I don’t think it’s possible to extend the battlefield beyond Ukraine. There’s just not enough people to fight. Ukraine has been prepared for this war for a long time –the equipment, the sites and the brains– and was a military powerhouse. By contrast, the Baltics or Moldovia could at best contribute a single battle.

Because peace is not an option for Brussels/Berlin/London/Paris, the natural next step IMO is on-going low intensity warfare, exchanging drones and missiles. This can be done from Baltics or Moldovia. I interpret the current war scare all over EU as preparing that step. A Russian missile hitting a German or British drone factory, for example, would be a godsend: the propaganda machine can milk that for a while and the repression screw will turn once more.

In the end,  it’s a UK vs US battleground. As evidenced in 2022 Islamabad.

CIA head Ratcliffe’s unscheduled trip to Russia should indicate that something big is coming, probably a massive escalation of the war, and very likely a flanking move through Belarus…So I doubt that these intramural fights in Kiev will have much effect…Russia has also pledged its support for Iran, and warned the EU that any vehicle carrying weapons to Ukraine will be fair game for attacks…
The Duma elections this month will elect hardliners, so Putin must stay ahead of them….

Is there not a possibility that the Israeli intel agency Mossad has a hand in the rivalry between MI6 and the CIA over the control of Ukraine’s intel and security organisations?

Current MI6 head Blaise Metreweli had been recommended to the UK Foreign Minister (David Lammy in 2024 or early 2025) by Mossad over two other more senior MI6 candidates and someone from the UK Foreign Office for the position. MoA barflies shouldn’t discount the possibility that the decisions Metreweli makes have some Israeli input.

In the unlikely event that Ukraine somehow survives Russia’s SMO and the SBU also survives more or less intact, Israel may well need Ukraine and the SBU as allies in any future frictions it picks with Iran and Turkey.

The bridges between Romania and Odessa, if blown up, force the route to come from the north. That leaves really only one viable road to gain access to Odessa for Nato supply. I would say there are designs to take Odessa and Nikolaev, maybe as AFU remnants are crushed in Orekhov, Slavyansk-Kramatorsk, and Dnipro-Zapo direction.

Russia needs to just patrol the one road north of Odessa with drones, and it’s isolated/blockaded.

My guess is Odessa is the real pain-point for UK/Nato. The escalation is because they see losing Odessa, the city they invested so much to control, and they lose Ukraine.

Posted by: unimperator | Sep 4 2026 21:10 utc | 46

Russia will take however much time it needs to finish the SMO to its satisfaction. Khairullen’s latest sitreps show many Ukie formations being encircled, their fortified cities in the process of being attacked from the rear. New incursions over the border expanding the buffer zone pit seasoned Russian troops against green Ukies while Russian jets get up close and personal with FABs. A recent video compilation posted at Martyanov’s shows massive numbers of trucks of all sorts being hit by drones. New jet powered drones are now mother ships for FPV drones attacking Kiev. Massive drone production increases are also announced. As for negotiations, Putin again reiterated that Russia doesn’t talk with terrorists, and that would be NATO which includes Ukraine.

As for who/what are driving the Outlaw’s wars, Colonel Wilkerson again had a lot to say about it being the CIA/Deep State in his chat with Glenn Diesen. Hs trashing of Clinton was total justified, but it was under GHW Bush that Wolfowitz penned his Doctrine that Clinton then used along with the Clean Break and Joint Vision 2010 papers to fuel his imperialism. And of course, most are aware of his being a CIA puppet. Patton wrote the Allies beat the wrong enemy, and there were many within the US establishment that agreed, General Groves in particular. When the SMO began, myself and others were keen to provide the long history of Outlaw US Empire support for Nazism in Europe and the OUN in western Ukraine. That hasn’t been done for awhile, but that doesn’t mean it vanished and suddenly reappeared in 2004, 2008, and 2013-4 and beyond. The Big Lie that NATO was formed to confront the Warsaw Pact is just that; NATO was formed to confront and eventually defeat USSR/Russia. The Outlaws essentially adopted Hitler’s Plan Ost and continue to try and completely implement it despite their declining abilities.

Barflies and the general public need to understand the current conflicts all have long historic policy tracks driven by Exceptionalism, Imperialism, Pleonexia, and Megalomania. The current policy of the Global Majority aims to isolate, ostracize and contain the Outlaws in a manner that avoids a nuclear confrontation–let them play with their dollars and euros, trade their substandard goods with each other and lie to themselves.

Another opinion is that ECB is able to ‘print’, it has its own Target2 account plus will take on and refinance corporate debt and assume forms of control of corporate entities .

The other main fiat stream is via the increasing national debt of various countries, now way beyond original limits. This is governed by ‘consensus’ of EU and ECB.

The swap scheme is said to maintain exchange rates, as well as set a framework of international capital and forms of leverage, to maintain the international economic ‘order’.

Do you have a link for that?  According to AI (which may not be right):

“No, Mercedes-Benz is not currently closing its main production plants in Germany. The company’s CFO explicitly stated in February 2025 that it will not shut down German facilities, opting instead to shift some production to Hungary and implement cost-cutting measures such as workforce reductions through voluntary redundancies and hiring freezes.”

This is interesting, but it’s TG which is just social media where opinions and facts blur:

The visit of Trump’s envoys will be the final act before strikes on Europe.

According to our highly placed sources, the upcoming shuttle tour of Trump’s representatives (Kushner and Whitcoff) between Moscow and Kyiv is seen solely as the last check before a major escalation. Washington has failed to force the Ukrainian government to cede the Donbas region, and Kyiv’s strikes deep into Russia have failed to sway the Kremlin’s position. The cards for negotiation are exhausted, and neither side intends to back down.

The West urgently needs a radical escalation of the conflict to justify the direct and open deployment of its forces. Ukraine’s demographic resources are running out: military officials understand that even an emergency mobilization of women (which previously seemed unthinkable) will not save the situation on the front lines. At the same time, European elites are living in a dangerous illusion, naively believing that they can strictly control the level of this escalation while remaining safe.

However, Moscow is preparing to turn the tables. Since Russia is not offered any peaceful scenarios that take into account its fundamental security interests, the military leadership is moving towards radical plans. The situation is critically escalating not only in Ukraine, but also in the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea. Insiders point out that the recent meeting of the Russian Security Council, attended by all its members and dedicated to the threat of a blockade of Kaliningrad, was a marker of preparations for a comprehensive confrontation with NATO.

The Kushner-Whitcoff mission is a formality before the storm. The West needs escalation, and Moscow is ready to provide it. In the new phase of the conflict, the System is simply left with no choice: the likelihood of direct and painful strikes by the Russian Aerospace Forces on military and logistical facilities within European countries themselves is becoming almost 100%. The illusion of Europe that the war will remain within foreign borders will soon end, the informant concludes.

I don’t think NATO will strike Russian airliners, probably a misdirection, I bet they go after the air traffic control towers across Russia. Depends on what their actual plan is, to force an attack on a NATO country outside Ukraine, or try to anger the Russian people against their govt., civilian plane travel is vital to Russia. Maybe NATO will do both hit the towers first then “accidentally” hit an airliner . Russia’s successes are getting bigger, Iran is part of this,  guessing the escalation and provocations will get more ambitious, and uglier.

Your post articulates the source of my broader unease. Russia’s endgame calculus remains strategic. Contrary to appearances, so is that of their adversaries. Taking over the world is no easy task. Russia’s opponents took the creepy, stealth/hybrid warfare path following WWII to slowly erode Russian gains from that war, knowing the sledge hammer approach would not work against the militarized Soviet Union. After cracking the social fabric of the USSR, they almost got there, but that approach hit a wall in Ukraine – Russia’s ultimate red line. Now Russia’s hardline opponents in the EU have no choice but to resort to the sledgehammer. Only they now find they have no sledgehammer, unless you consider nukes viable (which I do not, despite click bait crap saying “officials” are considering it). Mobilizing the population toward one grand existential battle is their only way out – which is why the messaging and appearances still matter even as the reality on the battlefield deteriorates. Ironically, Putin’s victory will come when those regimes that oppose Russia collapse due to their own failed policies. That would be the ultimate Judo.

I laughed at “mafia like”. Ukraine makes the Cosa Nostra look like gentlemen (which of course they are, uomini d’onore). I once thought the most fetid septic tank countries were either in central America or Africa (80s El Salvador or 70s Uganda), but Ukraine wins the award hands down. Words like corrupt, criminal, mafia, sociopathic, cannot deliver the failure of morality and human decency that this plaything of western intelligence has become. I wonder how the place has not collapsed a thousand times simply from the absence of the rule of law. How do normal people live? What is currency worth? Why would anyone bother carrying out basic services amidst such abject post-apocalyptic savagery?

I hope you’re right but I’m afraid that approximately 50% of the population support the pro-EU course. Maia Sandu isn’t popular and the elections were obviously right (and I’d guess the 2024 EU referendum too: it came out at 50.4% in favor).

This is officially “Europe’s poorest country” although current Ukrainians are worse off than Moldovan, I think. So dangling EU carrots should have some appeal. All this does not hold for the Gaugaz and people in Transnistria.

It’s my private conspiracy theory but I wondered if the Moldova-into-Romania plans that were pushed by Sandu stalled because Moldova was to be left open as another potential battleground. It’d be a minor battle but at least outside of NATO.

The Duisberg steel plant is being shutdown because of high electricity and carbon costs driving up the price of inputs while much cheaper imported product is available. Across Europe, ArcelorMittal is looking to shut down plants – Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain. All of the German car manufacturers are moving production out of Germany, for example to Hungary where costs are 70% lower.

The major Mercedes global manufacturing plants:

  • Beijing Benz JV (China): 600,000 (A-class, CLA, C-Class, E-class, GLA, GLB, GLC, EQA, EQB, EQC); rapidly falling capacity utilization.
  • Kecskemett (Hungary): Increased to 400,000 (electric C-class, electric GLC, compact G-class); high capacity utilization.
  • Tuscaloosa (US): 350,000 (GLE, GLS, Maybach SUV etc.); high capacity utilization
  • Bremen (Germany): 350,000, being reduced to 200,000 (GLC, EQE sedan); falling capacity utilization.
  • Sindelfingen (Germany): 250,000 (S-Class, S-Class Maybach, EQS, E-class, GLC); falling capacity utilization.

    • S-Class production dropped from 90k in 2022 to 50k in 2025 and it will be lower again in 2026
  • Rastatt (Germany): 200,000, being reduced to 150,000 (CLA); falling capacity utilization.

The Chinese plant and all the German plants are seeing falling capacity utilization. Only the Hungary and US plants are well utilized. MB keeps shrinking plant capacities rather than bite the bullet and close a plant. Rastatt and Bremen are the ones at risk, Sindelfingen is high end sedan global production centre.

BMW is in the same position with rapidly falling sales in China leading to falling utilization there, good utilization of its US Spartanburg global SUV production hub, high utilization of its Debrecen Hungary plant, and falling utilization at its Dingolfing Germany sedan global production hub.

VW has sales of all of its brands collapsing in China, so massive under-utilization of its Chinese plants. All Porsche’s are made in Germany, so its collapsing sales is impacting the Porsche production facilities in Germany. Most of the VW brand cars sold in North America are made in the US and Mexico, and the VW Polo production was recently moved there from Germany. Mexico is also the global production hub for the Audi Q5. All South American sales are met from local production facilities. So VW and Audi’s German production plants are most exposed to European and MENA sales. VW Group has a plethora of brands (Skoda, SEAT etc.) with their own production facilities outside of Germany (Spain, Portugal, Slovakia, Czechia). So the main issue is the performance of the VW and Audi brands and whether or not VW moves more of their production outside of Germany. VW has already answered the second question with the plans to close Emden, Zwickau, Hanover and Neckarlsum and transfer production to Eastern Europe and Mexico by 2034 (I can see that schedule being rapidly accelerated). The only German vehicle production plants left in Germany will be Wolfsburg (VW, capacity to be reduced from 900k to 600k), Ingolstadt (Audi, capacity reduced from 450k to 300k) and Leipzig (Audi, an ex Porsche plant). To all intents and purposes, VW and Audi will cease being German car brands with the vast majority of vehicles made in Eastern Europe, Mexico, China, Brazil and the US.  And that before the major impact of Chinese brands in Europe!

Some of the plants are already being repurposed to produce war toys and munitions, but that will be limited. European car manufacturing is moving to Spain, Hungary, Czechia, Slovakia, Poland and even Serbia plus some plants in Algeria. Germany will become much less important, once again the “sick man of Europe”. Then add in the self-destruction of the energy intensive petrochemicals and steel industries and the accelerating Chinese destruction of the German engineering sector. Germany is like the UK in the 1970s, at the start of a long (but significantly faster) decline that will make it a pale shadow of its former self. The whole of Northwestern Europe, including the UK, is going that way. Together with Italy. Back to being a backwater at the end of Eurasia.

Thanks for your reply. When looking at old maps of Europe, Moldova is present whereas Romania is not. That resulted from the research I did about Moldova when the SMO began. IMO, over 50% of Moldovans in-country are anti-Sandu, but when you include those outside that number grows to 60% or more, which is why voters outside Moldova were greatly restricted in those two elections you cite–Sandu and EU/NATO would have lost both. The situation is very similar to Armenia. Fortunately, EU/NATO have no economic carrots to offer while Russia has many.

Posted by: karlof1 | Sep 5 2026 2:03 utc | 87

karlof1: yes, I don’t assume that the majority of Moldovans feel the urge to become Romania’s poorest province. (Would be interesting to know what Romanians think about the whole thing.)

In my posting above I made a bad typo: of course I assume that elections and referendum were *rigged* (not “right”), even beyond the blatant denial of voters in Russia.

Given that EU is unable to make peace –the war effort is the only unifying moment by now– and that Ukraine is floundering, some substitute is needed. I don’t think any EU nation is currently ready to fight as the Ukrainians do. As EU has to sacrifice something on the altar of war, it makes sense to offer a smaller, less important region. A Baltic state would also work well.

😀 I never thought of reading your human adult propaganda through the eyes of swooning prepubescent girls with a crush! That makes so much more sense. It even explains why characters like Hegseth and their bravado could be seen like bragging & daredeviling prepubescent boys with a crush. You’re managed by horny pre-teens who don’t know what to do with themselves!

😮 Does this mean your massive cooperative human power tends to end up in the control of the most emotionally arrested among you? Or is it limited strictly to the West at this time?

I am sorry to read your report re your supermarket stocks.

In all the academic armchair discussion by @barflies about pUtin this,  lie-enskyy that, it’s too easy to forget the on-the-ground reality of an actual Ukrainian, who didn’t sign up to be a blunt tool of Empire.

Hang in there,  and I hope your situation, and that of all Everyday Ukrainians improves.

Seems that at this point one has to be careful when referring to NATO or ‘the West’ without asking whether that includes the US or not? The yapping Euro chihauhaus talk a mighty big game with lots of swagger, but are they presuming that the US will ride to their aid once things get real down and dirty.  And what is the Trump regimes strategy in all this, if it is actually able to define a strategy for itself and stick with it?  The punchback that it got in Iran must surely give at least some military personell second thoughts about jumping into another conflict.  If the US really wants Ukraine to cede the Donbass can the the US be all that eager to invoke Article 5 if Russia finally has a snootful and decides to take out a drone factory in Europe?  My thinking is that the Trump regime when it does have rational thoughts would rather not see the war come to this, hence the social calls by Jared and Steve, because if it does come to this they will sit it out and watch Europe take the thumps.  And Europe doesn’t really want to take the thumps and have the war come to them, that’s for their proxy.  My guess is that if things really do go down, the US will sit it out.

The headline of that RT article is “Witkoff and Kushner bringing ‘proposal to end war’ to Moscov and Kiev — Trump”

The Russians will go through the diplomatic motions, as is their style. But nothing will come out of it:

  1. Even if Team Trump was honest about “ending the war”, i.e. if they were willing to accept Russia’s most basic demands (address root causes; no ceasefire for its own sake), neither EU nor Team Zelenski can accept it. EU needs at least a war-like state for its existence. Zelenski needs the war to keep the money flowing, and peace is bad as it’ll only release society’s anger about all the losses and corruption.
  2. Moreover, we have no reason to assume that suddenly Team Trump is genuine about the anti-Russian war. They had a chance at Anchorage and blew it. Perhaps they can manage to salvage some US investments.

There are attempts right now to finally unseat, or at least sideline Zelenski, in favor of Fedorov or Zalushny or Budanov. The latter is supposedly the man for negotation but the positions of Ukraine vs. Russia are worlds apart. I trust the Kremlin’s official statements: due to decisions made in Washington and Brussels/EU, at least the war in Ukraine is going to be resolved on the battlefield.

The Witkoff and Kushner gambit by Trump to manage the Ukraine conflict running up to the midterms will fail just like Trump is trying to have a “not a war” in Iran currently.

Russia is in control of the pace and I doubt it will agree to the temporary four-day ceasefire Ukraine has ordered from September 5 to September 8, 2026

Just like Iran is being assertive in the ME, Trump is not in control of the narrative in Ukraine nor Iran based on what we are seeing Russia do daily.

Seems everywhere we look through the free and democratic West we see Zionist mafia operations, either directly or though their “elected” stooges, how else can we account for a political class of such utter ignorance and lack of any charisma?

“US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner plan to travel to Kiev and Moscow soon, a source told TASS”. Having two crooked real estate operators, Jewish of course, being used as negotiators for anything aside from their next kick back is an insult to the intelligence.

The world has become a mob turf war.

Nero post on Social media:

Great jobs number just announced, breaking all estimates (except mine!) by double and triple – And you haven’t seen anything yet! EMPLOYERS ADDED 162,000 JOB IN AUGUST. Lower the interest rates because the U.S.A. is a much stronger credit than it was just a short time ago! A STRONG COUNTRY MEANS A LOWER INTEREST RATE – IT’S A BETTER CREDIT…Very simple! We should have the LOWEST RATE of any country in the World, like “the old days.” Without the United States agreeing to allow them their big surpluses, and we could stop that immediately, they would no longer be considered financially ELITE! LOWER THE RATE OR I’LL STOP TRADING WITH COUNTRIES WITH WHICH WE HAVE A DEFICIT, which the U.S. Supreme Court, in its ridiculous and very costly Tariff decision, strongly acknowledged “the President” has an absolute right to do. IT’S BETTER THAN TARIFFS! The Fed Board, with its great new leader, must get smart – BE PATRIOTS for a change. High interest rates put the U.S.A. at a very unfair disadvantage, and I won’t allow that to happen! President DONALD J. TRUMP
