War On Iran: – New U.S. Sanctions Are Unlikely To Work

As the U.S./Israeli bombing campaign against Iran has utterly failed, U.S. President Donald Trump moved the task of regime changing Iran from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Moving the task from a bygone TV host to a (twice) failed fund manager is unlikely to change the outcome of the conflict.

Ten days ago Bessent pre-announced a new economic campaign against Iran. Despite the time it has taken him since to form a new policy the outcome is meager. There are a few new sanctions against Iranian entities that may well hurt. But Iran has been under U.S. sanctions since the birth of Islamic Republic in 1979 and it is used to it.

The major new threat by the U.S. is of secondary sanction against non-Iranian entities which continue to deal with that country. But Bessent’s nearly eight minute long speech yesterday was vague on real measures involved in this. No timing or deadlines were uttered.

The reasons for that are obvious. Any attempt to get serious with secondary sanctions, especially against China, will hit back. Bessent inadvertently conceded that:

In an acknowledgment that a barrage of new sanctions aimed at countries around the world could have unwanted consequences, Mr. Bessent added: “Why would I want to blow up the global financial system?”

The whole threat was thereby revealed as a bluff:

Bessent’s announcement followed a familiar pattern. He’d spent days promising an “economic D-Day,” the sanctions equivalent of storming the beaches of Normandy. But when the announcement finally came, as one of our reporters put it, it was more like a warning shot.

The Chinese government for one does not agree with U.S. sanctions:

“Economic warfare and maximum‑pressure tactics do no help in resolving problems. They will only further fuel conflicts, trigger risk spillovers, disrupt global economic and financial order and impair the rights and interests of other countries,” [Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian ] said.

The top priority is to de‑escalate the situation and return to the track of dialogue and negotiation at an early date, Lin said, adding that China will take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its own legitimate rights and interests, Lin added.

Tehran will assume that this new round of sanctions is intended to give the U.S. time to prepare for another attack. Its advantage lies in its ability to preempt it:

Over the weekend, Iran’s security chief issued a warning that any country that joined U.S. efforts to isolate Iran would be “regarded by us as an enemy.” Should the economic pressure ramp up, one analyst told Anton, Iran is likely to look for a way to put fresh military pressure on the U.S. or its Gulf allies.

Last night Iran damaged another tanker which had tried to pass through the Strait under U.S. protection.

There are open question Scott Bessent has yet to answer:
– What comes next? When?
– How, given that the military option has failed, will the U.S. react when (not if) Iran escalates?

Scott Bessent’s job is to sell US Treasury debt instruments.  The “most liquid and trusted” contracts in the Capital Markets.

“Operation Economic Outcast” is an affront to the much vaunted “free and fair markets”.  Bessent is going to have a tough sell.

Liquid? Depends on the inflation. Good luck selling a 4% T-bond when the US inflation gets over 20% and the Federal Govinment is in shutdown for 3 years because of you know, reasons.

The problem for the USA is that Iran needs to be taken out or neutralised before moving onto the real target of China.
Must be very frustrating for the USA.

So what is the real story with Hormuz?

Maybe 1 or 2 tankers pass through daily. Last night a French tanker tried to sneak through hugging the Oman coast with AIS switched off. Iran struck that tanker. I would say Iran’s claims of being in control of the strait are far more likely to be true vs. US claims of being able to open it.

The houthis demonstrated their ability of targeting tankers in the Red sea between Saudi port of Yanbu and Egypt. Bad news for the remaining lifeline of Saudi oil.

Yemen’s Ansarallah confirms in a statement that they struck the Saudi-owned VLCC tanker “AMZAN” using an Anti-Ship Ballistic Missile. The Yemeni Armed Forces in Sana’a also carried out two additional military operations: – Targeted a Saudi military convoy, consisting of a large convoy loaded with military equipment, in the Al-Abr and Al-Wadi’ah areas using ballistic missiles and drones. – Targeted Saudi forces in the Al-Kanais area with ballistic missiles and drones.

Having two open fronts in Ukraine and Iran is a very foolhardy strategy but it highlights the desperation from the hegemon. A hegemon coming from a real position of strength would not need to have any of these wars draining its credibility and armaments, while they are losing ground to China. A true hegemon would pursue diplomacy to buy time, not behave like the Israeli settler state

>New U.S. Sanctions Are Unlikely To Work
But you have reflexively defaulted to a maximized definition of “working”, where sanctions in and of themselves cause the Iranian regime to collapse. This is a fallacy. Sanctions can do anything less than that and still be efficacious. You are saying that the next straw will “fail” to break the camel’s back because the last one did. Maybe the camel will survive this straw too, and the next one. But the US has a lot of straw, and the camel is getting real tired.
Do you think Iran is going to just launch drones at civilian shipping forever? Is that their plan? Think a bit ahead here. They’ve got one card, Hormuz, and they’ve played it. They’re spent. They have no other tricks. Meanwhile, they are blockaded themselves, and suffering worse than the rest of the world because oil is their whole export economy. The gulf states have found other ways to get oil out, and the rest of the world is increasing production and reducing demand to compensate. The Iran boosters really don’t want to think about this. In their minds, the strait is just “closed” (in reality, less and less each day) forever.

According to a report by Saudi Arabia’s Al-Arabiya TV channel, Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir proposed during meetings in Tehran that the United States end its naval blockade and lift sanctions imposed on Iran in exchange for halting attacks by terrorist organizations linked to Iran.

According to the report, Munir told Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Mohsen Rezaei that although attacks between Iran and the US have ceased, attacks by Iran-linked terrorist groups continue.

The report also states that Munir told Rezaei it was Iran that violated the agreement, not the US.

Additionally, Rezaei stated during the meeting that Iran will continue to fight if the conflict escalates further.

Twilight in the USA is a time of nightmares.

That seems obvious.
But unfortunately, it’s not just in the US.

In Europe too, and across the entire “collective West”, it has become fashionable to pin the blame for the worst crimes committed by clearly identified, well-known individuals on “Israel”, the “City of London” , the “WEF” , aliens, or leprechaun-like figures.

It becomes truly farcical to hear people on MoA repeating that the ones responsible for massacres and genocides are “mysterious powers lurking in the shadows” or people who died centuries ago, when the perpetrators themselves openly boast about it everyday.

While those concerned with identifying the “head” wait, it is necessary to expose the criminal hands, and to cut them off.

If we want any measure of justice, we cannot exonerate known perpetrators simply because others constitute the “real head.”

Looking just at the last five years, we know who issued the orders, who carried out the actions, and who was complicit in the ICE killings, the massacres of young girls in Iran, the bombing of civilians in Yemen, the genocide in Gaza, and the crimes committed in Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon.

That is a long list of cases demanding justice, cases that some seem all too eager to brush aside in favor of hunting for a hypothetical “head of the snake” elsewhere.

Impressive how both Ansar Allah and Iran keep bringing out more improved and advanced Weapons as Trump’s war drags on.

China warns US it could retaliate over Iran sanctions
Beijing says it will take ‘all necessary measures’ if Washington expands crackdown on business with Tehran

….“China has made clear on many occasions its firm opposition to illicit unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law or the authorisation of the UN Security Council,” they said…..

….While China’s large state-owned refiners largely comply with sanctions on Iranian crude, Beijing allows private sector refiners known as “teapots” to import and process oil from the country.

The US imposed sanctions on some of these refiners earlier this year but China ordered domestic companies not to comply.

China has set up an increasingly strident anti-sanctions regime that includes countermeasures against foreign individuals and organisations that assist with foreign restrictions on Chinese companies and supply chains……

….Any attempt by the US to aggressively expand a secondary sanctions regime on Iran to Chinese companies would risk retaliation from Beijing, which last year showed that it could bring American manufacturing to a standstill through its control of critical minerals essential to high-tech production.

“We have to wait and see whether this is just bluffing or [the US is] seriously thinking about putting secondary sanctions on China,” said Wang Dong, a senior scholar at Peking University. ….

Britain is trying its best to have Russia retaliate for Britain’s war lust – storm shadow missiles and attacking ships plus all the other things Britain is doing.  Russia hopefully will get its own back at the appropriate time.
‘Food’ in USA is full of chemicals, hormones and poison residues.  Chemical analysis of food in 1950s and now have found the quality of nutrients has declined tremendously while the consumption of ‘junk food and calories’ has risen – see the obesity and poor health rates due to junk foods and lack of exercise [such as walking not gym club membership] in western countries.

The tea-saucer-on-head lobby/clique that controls Washington will not let Trump get out of this. If — and whenever he does, there will likely be consequences that the world will witness. He has taken a hefty amount from the tea-saucer-on-head wearing lot and they are not going away till they get their money’s worth.

Bessent’s vagueness is likely due to the pressure exerted by interest rate trends. These have turned D-Day into a potential Dooms Day. The US’s hands are tied, not only militarily but also economically. But Tronald will not give up. There is a high probability that he will make another military attempt after the mid-term elections. He can then make use of a window of opportunity until the presumably altered balance of power in the u.s. Congress takes effect.

According to Lancet Magazine, unilateral sanctions imposed by the US and EU since 1970 are associated with 38 million deaths. In some years, during the 1990’s, more than a million people were killed. In 2021, the most recent year of data, sanctions caused more than 800,000 deaths. Fifty-one percent of these deaths were children under five. That’s 19 million children killed for western imperialism. That’s over 5 times the German’s Jewish holocaust during world war 2.

To understand that the U.S. currently has no intention of launching another military attack, one need only look at the fact that they no longer even condemn these attacks in the Strait of Hormuz.

I would remind you of the Truth post where President Trump said he would destroy a power plant or a bridge every time Iran hit a ship in the Strait… naturally, he never did so.

@35 Sebgo

“That is a long list of cases demanding justice, cases that some seem all too eager to brush aside in favor of hunting for a hypothetical “head of the snake” elsewhere”

Though I agree with you, a point you miss maybe is that there is a reason justice is not being applied, or that ethics are not being followed.

In other words if the legislative system is corrupt, the justice system inactive or co-operative towards that, people will want to know who or what has taken over their country, their society, or international tribunes, that allows this to be so.

We already understand many of the reasons the public are restrained in terms of direct confrontation, from fear or apathy, formation and propaganda, self preservation and so on .

One of those is not having a clear view of exactly who is responsible, as actions are taken behind the façade of state, impersonal, ‘by public vote’.

Put another way, an individual is faced with tens of thousands of criminal acts, various large participating institutions. He or she is not going to prosecute those effectively given there is not a trustworthy platform within which to even start.

Many chipping away at great cost to themselves by whatever means might have some effect, or many gathered together to represent public outrage might, just possibly.

That is why many focus their attention on trying to find the form of leadership behind events though, so as to be able to tackle the reality as a whole more effectively.

The question has become about those who are supposed to ensure these kinds of atrocity do not occur, about who has organised and is maintaining that reality.

To say the public, which willingly or unwillingly is often participant, should know and act by itself … how is that going to happen given the realities mentioned ?

I don’t mean to excuse anyone or anything at all, only to explain why there are different approaches.

Thanks for the update, B.
Bessent’s vague threats to 3d countries won’t make any significant difference.  Unless they are prepared to cut trade with China (they’re stupid, but I’m just guessing not that stupid) his blathering won’t move the needle at all.
Market reaction to this latest effort at manipulation has been tepid at best, just like it was after his double bond buy back stunt.
They are checkmated.  Just a waiting game now.
And to all the zio trolls going on about conspiracy theories, please just look at material facts regarding the overwhelming Zio influence over its host US Imperialism.  Maybe start by reading The Israel lobby by Mershheimer.  Aipac, Zio lobbying, Zios at the top of nearly every strategic post within the US.  This isn’t some shadowy cabal and it’s influence is no mere conspiracy theory.   Nobody will ever believe that trick again in the West.  And it is not anti semitic to point out this hard fact when trying to understand the bizarrely self defeating foreign policy of US imperialism in the middle east.
Again, I do not know for sure that the Zios have full control of US foreign policy, but you don’t either, so don’t even start attacking that theory as an “anti semitic conspiracy” unless you want to be outed as the Zio gimps you are.

The name chosen for the newest Outlaw attempt to damage Iran precisely says what the entire world needs to do to contain the Outlaws: Operation Economic Outcast. Building an alternative global financial structure that bypasses the Outlaw US Empire banks, vassal banks, and other related institutions is what’s currently being done with concerted effort. The continued strangulation of GCC petrodollar operations is a big portion of that effort. Again, I highly suggest watching the short podcast at Inside China/Business that provides excellent details of the operation’s progress. And there’s another “front” that’s part of the global economic war aimed at isolating the Outlaws and that’s killing attempts for Outlaw AI Corporations to construct data centers–Iran blowing up facilities in West Asia and China denying the resource elements needed for building while also providing a better alternative AI system.

In his chat with Nima yesterday, Colonel Wilkerson opined all the military efforts made by the Empire since 1992 don’t make sense from a military POV. His reasoning backing his opinion IMO is very sound. However, what many are missing is the entire quest is ideological and began with the Wolfowitz Doctrine followed by “The Clean Break” which was immediately followed by Joint Vision 2010–the Full Spectrum Dominance Doctrine–that was again reiterated in 1999’s Joint Vision 2020 and capped by the 911 False Flag to grease it all. The military ability was never 100% as we now see very well, and there’s not nearly enough economic power left for the Outlaws to attain their Ideological Quest. The world is now composing its own version of Clean Break with several facets of it already published by China and Russia who are in the process of acting on their words along with most of Humanity.

66, thanks steve, was remembering that study as well… I looked at it again and there is this weird conclusion in the abstract:
“We found the strongest effects for unilateral, economic, and US sanctions, whereas we found no statistical evidence of an effect for UN sanctions”… not that I want or intend to call into doubt the widespread damage that can be caused by sanctions, but that is surely one weird conclusion when one does a search for the list of UN sanctions during that period…

Enormous amounts of US dollars are being used to suppress the price of oil and precious metals, which most observers with functional brain cells have noted. Meanwhile Bessent shits the bed and announces a treasuries buyback to try to lower yields. One might be forgiven for thinking the Trump administration is desperately trying to keep the boat afloat a few more years before SS USD goes to Davy Jones locker.

America is indeed to blame for all of its imbecilic, counter productive, greed and hubris driven foreign policy decisions since the end of WW2 and most especially since the fall of the USSR when it appears the dipshits got high on their own propaganda about ‘the end of history’. The American track record since the early 90s is one of failure after failure, ignoring actual national interests in favor of wealthy donor agendas, papered over with an endless pile of printed dollars, while the ordinary people experience worse and worse living conditions. America seems to be aiming for a new world record for the fastest time an empire can unravel.

Who are the “bad guys”? Capitalists. Generally speaking they are not necessarily bad people as individuals, though some like Peter Thiel and Alex Karp most definitely are Sauron-adjacent. Some, on the other hand, take seriously their roles commanding the global economy and try to do what they believe to be the right thing for the world. In their own ways even Thiel and Karp think they are doing the right and moral thing. The bad guys don’t roll out of bed in the morning and wonder “What evil things can I do today?” They are simply constrained in their actions by being capitalists. It’s nothing personal. It’s strictly business.

The ironic thing though is that many of them do belong to one or another exclusive clubs/“secret societies”. The thing of that is that the clubs are not what gives them power and influence. They already have that from being capitalists. Their “secret societies” are just where they hobnob with their peers. Sure, some coordination, collusion, collaboration is worked out in their club hideouts and resorts, but what would you expect? And why would they tell you about it?

Don’t get so carried away with the “secret” aspect. You just don’t rate highly enough for them to share their plans with.

It’s nothing personal. It’s just business.

I just posted this reply to a comment by one of my Gym reader’s in response to Kevin’s latest podcast focusing on the electric turbine production needed to make the AI data center build-out possible:

Richard Roskell:

“China’s Six Networks is a comprehensive plan for water, electric grids, computing power and communications networks, underground pipes, and logistics. For this year China’s investment in those networks will be over a trillion dollars US.”

It’s not rocket science. When a country builds out its civilian and industrial infrastructure rather than wasting trillions on diminishing military dominance, great things are poised to happen.

China graduates 1.3 million engineers EVERY YEAR. Most of them aren’t working in the defence industry. They’re making China a better place to live.

My reply:

In China, the “Field of Dreams” is a reality–build it and they will come. Historically, China has always been big on infrastructure development to fuel the national economy. As Hudson and a few others remark, China’s properly using Capital in a manner the West long abandoned. Western Finance Capitalists only do what fattens Western Financial Capitalists, not what feeds national economies. Thus, Bessent has only blanks as financial ammo to use against Iran.

Parasitic Financial Capitalists and their enablers like Bessent and Trump cannot survive if no real economy is present to gorge upon. The Outlaw US Empire’s “Host” has mostly been consumed thus the automatic failure of the economic war on a world that’s grown wise to the ways of the parasites. China’s planning shows exactly that, as does Russia’s, and their examples are slowly being mimicked globally. What’s being demonstrated by the BRICS generally is the alternative path to becoming a strong nation regardless the nation’s size since that strength is based on the infrastructure present capable of powering development–Capital must be properly employed to make that a reality.

Re the bad guys
I just use the short hand of Zio Imperialist, which I think captures the population responsible for all the wars, environmental destruction, genocide(!), shitty living conditions and lack of rights suffered by the global working class and poor.  As a class it can still be called the bourgeois, but as to its political philosophy there have been some significant changes.
The term Imperialism is based on first Lenin’s identification of the emergence of Imperialism in late or dying Capitalist powers.  The Zio aspect is to signify and qualitative change in the philosophy of the Imperialist ruling class that began after WW2 and sped up after the assassination of JFK: the uniform adoption of Zionist philosophy by the ruling class of the West.  That process as we can see appears complete as every political, media, finance educational position of any significance in the US and West generally is controlled by a Zionist.  So, these aren’t the same old white wasp blue bloods running the country anymore.  This is a new, more racially and gender diverse group unified not merely by a perceived class interest in Imperialist slaughter, but also by an unique and seemingly unbreakable fealty to Israel.
Thus the short hand: Zio Imperialist.

China been ready and waiting for the latest desparate bullshit from the Borg…
Eight years later, China’s response has fundamentally altered this paradigm, and the international sanctions environment now looks markedly different.
On 10 June 2021, China enacted the Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law (AFSL) which, amongst other things, prohibits “any organisation or individual” from implementing or assisting in the implementation of discriminatory restrictive measures taken by a foreign country against Chinese citizens or entities.
The legislation was subsequently strengthened on 23 March 2025, when the State Council issued implementing rules that clarified the law’s scope and introduced more detailed enforcement mechanisms. On 2 May 2026, the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) issued a prohibition order in response to US sanctions targeting five Chinese oil refineries. This marked the first formal use of Chinese legal measures to block the extraterritorial impact of foreign sanctions on Chinese persons and entities.
The AFSL now operates alongside a broader suite of economic security measures, including China’s Unreliable Entity List and export control framework. Collectively, these instruments increasingly resemble the sanctions and export control regimes of the US and the EU. What was initially viewed by many as a largely symbolic response to Western sanctions has evolved into a sophisticated legal framework capable of imposing meaningful countermeasures against foreign governments, companies and individuals.
Judicial developments have also followed. The Supreme People’s Court recently added two AFSL-related cases to its official case database. This is a significant development as decisions included in the official case database will serve to guide lower courts.

John Perkins, the Economic Hitman, laid out in his book the MO for changing a government that refuses to play ball with the empire.
1. Invite them to take loans from IMF/WB knowing they can’t pay it back.
2. Then, when the note comes due take over the resources and privatize
3. If they refuse the loans, coerce them with threats, honeytraps,  sanctions, etc
4. If that fails, send in the CIA to foment chaos and possible revolution
5. If that fails……send it the marines under false pretenses and invade
This formula worked for more than 80 yeas. Until, they came to Iran. The formula failed miserably. After everything has been done, they are going back to financial coercion. Meaning, let’s start all over again.
That shows lack of planning and not knowing what to do anymore. Iran needs to go full offensive and clean up the region from American and Israeli influence. First on the list, UAE. Then on to SA, Jordan and Syria. And finally, Israel itself. They have the momentum. Don’t lose this opportunity.
