Nuclear power must be solely and exclusively a deterrent. Anyone who calls for its use, even if limited, is crazy.
Russia has very effective conventional weapons, and three Oreshniks are enough: one on Sigonella in Italy, one on a NATO base in Romania, and one on a NATO base in Poland.
We would see those willing to talk about arming themselves vanish like fog in the sun.

The problem is quantity of weapons versus number of enemy targets to hit. Unfortunately I think the calculation leads to nukes.  NATO now states that Russia has no intention to attack because they know they would be beaten. That poker playing while helping Ukraine to attack long into Russia, I believe means nuclear war is likely. Alternatively Europe gets back to its senses.

My vision of the ongoing Anglo-American conflict against Russia is a long-term, low-intensity war, a war that uses proxies—today Ukraine, yesterday Chechnya and Georgia, tomorrow Armenia and probably Azerbaijan—
a strategy that seeks to turn Russia into a boiled frog.
What is astonishing is Russia’s lack of reaction to this decades-long attempt, and even more disconcerting is its continued supplying of everything Russia has to Europe and the US, fueling the Western war industry, an industry that produces weapons it sends to the front against Russia itself.
This behavior is inexplicable to me.

Yesterday Putin held a meeting to discuss the socio-economic progress of Russia’s old yet new territories to evaluate the progress made regarding the plan set out in 2023. The linked transcript is in English. Putin’s opening remarks set the agenda:
 

Our agenda includes issues of socioeconomic development of Donbass and Novorossiya. Let me remind you that just over three years ago, in April 2023, a corresponding comprehensive programme was endorsed, and large-scale tasks were set to ensure close integration of our historical territories into a single legal, economic, educational, cultural, and information space of the country.
 
Today, we will assess the results attained, and most importantly, we will once again jointly analyse which areas call for additional efforts, where closer coordination is required, taking into account the current situation and operational information from the regional heads. We will look into where resources should be concentrated as a priority, and where, as I have already mentioned, additional support from the federal authorities is required.
 
I would like to point out once again that under the plans, the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics, and the Kherson and the Zaporozhye regions should achieve Russian nationwide standards in all key indicators, in terms of quality of life by 2030. To this end, the programme provides for about 300 different activities, including the development of social, housing, transport, and utilities infrastructure, implementation of projects to launch new industrial and agricultural enterprises, and creation of additional modern jobs.

On the general situation:
 

Our troops are holding a strategic advantage, confidently moving forward, and no shelling or drone strikes are going to change this situation now. There are advances in all directions. The enemy cannot contain this onslaught and is turning to openly terrorist methods – striking civilian targets and communications as well as passenger transport.

 
IMO, this is a critical assessment of the work done to-date and outline of what needs to follow. You won’t get his info from any media. Those having any concern for the future of the region need to read what’s said.

I am not sure resistance (which intensifies conflict) is the right answer? The global system of governance need multi polar inputs. Everyone should have equal input.  Government behavior should reflect the result of idea, need and intention competition. Bottom-up input should balance top down demand .. In our world today there is no input form the bottom up allowed.. I propose the following as a way to start..
 
We need a human rights organization, with its own sovereignty, that includes everyone in the world who is not connected to the deep state can join..Life without deep state surveillance, liberty without undue restraint, pursuit of happiness and the education need to make that happen, right to self determination and the communication channels needed to make that happen and right to decide where and how one should live.. should be the objective of the human rights union.
 
I see it as a human rights promoting organization.. gathering sufficient funds to effective compete with the deep state, with its propaganda, with its monopoly powers in media, narrative and ownership control..

For each top down nation  state representative there ought to be a bottom up human rights representative.  Both the HR representative and the nation state representatives should each have a vote and share in the nations decisions, demands and projects promoted at the UN with similar sharing of power in their respective homelands.

Putin’s speech is all true, all correct,
a speech that even the frog gave while the water was heating up. It’s a shame that at the boiling point he lacked the strength to jump out.
The same thing will happen to Russia. The collective West is rapidly setting up weapons and drone factories,
and if there was ever any doubt, China is doing its part in supplying them. Russia is inventing shadow oil companies so that the West doesn’t run out of energy and steel.
The strategy isn’t to defeat Ukraine; Ukraine is already defeated without US and EU support.
Therefore, I find Putin’s speech interesting but also hypocritical.
I’m not Russian, but that’s their problem.

Just watched a video where Paul Brandenburg interviewed Thomas Röper. I’m mentioning it here because at the end, Thomas explains what he sees as the dominating approaches to the war, as discussed in Russia (I chose the names):

1. The hard line: Russia reacts to the ever-increasing attacks by retaliating outside of Ukraine. Röper mentioned EUropean factories building drones for Ukraine (the other day, the Kremlin published a list of addresses of such companies) or some military point in Poland that’s particularly relevant for Ukraine (I could’t make out the name).
2. The soft line: Russia grins and bears it, not attacking places outside of Ukraine. This approach assumes the next winter will be devastating for EU, and there are good reasons to assume that: gas storage is as low as never before and experts expect controlled blackouts. Cost of living will increase even more.

Each strategy has its own advantages and drawbacks. Röper says that “Russia will have to do something” because the effects of the drone attacks are noticeable, problematic and widely discussed in Russia. I can see how the soft line makes sense — if it works, i.e. if Brussel’s grip on EUrope weakens during the winter. If not, it may have been wiser to choose the hard line earlier.

Russian MP warns Putin: We’re on the brink of social collapse

A Russian MP has demanded that Vladimir Putin deliver a plan to end the war as he berated the Kremlin’s “ineffective leadership”.

In his lengthy tirade, Vyacheslav Markhayev listed corruption scandals, oligarchy, losses of the “most active and reproductively capable segment of the population” and Ukrainian drone strikes among the ills plaguing wartime Russia.

“The time of illusions is over. The country is on the brink of a social explosion and the blame for this will fall squarely on the entrenched ruling power,” said Markhayev, a deputy of the State Duma from Russia’s Communist Party.

“If the situation persists, social unrest and chaos will become more likely,” he lamented. “The West will inevitably exploit this to destroy the remnants of Russian statehood.”

The deputy joins a growing list of public figures who have broken from the official line to voice criticism of the authorities.

Late last month, Renat Suleymanov, another State Duma deputy from the same party, called for the “earliest possible end” to the war, saying the economy could not “withstand” its continuationIn March, Ilya Remeslo, formerly a staunch Kremlin loyalist, suddenly turned against Putin with a scathing public denunciation which called the Russian president “a war criminal and a thief”, calling for him to be put on trial. 

Discontent with the authorities has simmered ominously in the past few months, linked to sweeping internet outages, sluggish progress on the battlefield and long-range Ukrainian strikes that have penetrated the heart of Russia’s two biggest cities.

This week, it was reported that the state-controlled Russian Public Opinion Research Centre (VCIOM) would stop publishing Putin’s “open” trust rating as it plummeted to the lowest level since the start of the full-scale invasion.

Only 29.5% of Russians named their president as one of the politicians they trusted in early April, before the survey was mysteriously discontinued.

Concerns about the resilience of the economy have also spurred a backlash. Growth has slowed to a crawl, inflation remains elevated and Ukrainian attacks on refineries and terminals have bitten a chunk out of Moscow’s oil-driven budget, sending crude processing to a 16-year low.

 
 
Defence expenditure has reached post-Cold War heights

Meanwhile, high defence expenditure which has reached post-Cold War heights has triggered increasing alarm in Russia’s finance ministry.

Military spending increased by more than 30% in early 2026 compared with the year before, reaching 46% of total budget spending, according to Dr Janis Kluge, an economist and senior associate at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs.

This means that almost every second rouble spent from the federal budget was allocated to the military.

“The pace of military spending looks even more impressive (and, from the Kremlin’s perspective, concerning) when compared with budget revenues… military spending was equivalent to two-thirds of Russian budget revenues in January to March 2026,” said Dr Kluge.

The flagship international economic forum in St Petersburg last week, which was the site of two mass Ukrainian drone strikes on its opening and closing days, was meant to showcase Russia’s economic resilience.

Instead, it has only deepened concerns. One topic of discussion was the absence of Elvira Nabiullina, the governor of the central bank, usually a fixture at the event.

The Kremlin claimed that she was on sick leave, but rumours have swirled about the protracted absence of Putin’s top economist.

This week, she and her deputies also skipped an interest-rate meeting with the Russian president and his senior ministers.

Russian independent channels, citing sources close to the government, have claimed that Ms Nabiullina has handed Putin an ultimatum that she will only serve out her term on the condition that he does not escalate the war with border closures and martial law.

Another source told the channel Mozhem Obyasnitthat she was planning to leave the central bank imminently, which would amount to a significant upset.

The governor, who is highly regarded as a policymaker and has worked with Putin for almost two decades, is believed to have long harboured private reservations about the full-scale invasion, and is said to have attempted to resign at its outset. At that time, she was ordered to remain in her post, according to sources close to the Kremlin.

Russian forces are increasing the production rate and modernization of their ballistic missiles and drones. Available information suggests that Russia’s monthly missile production surpasses the US’s monthly PAC-3 Patriot air defense interceptor missile production.
 
So the coordination between the two makes my conclusion that the nookum voices here are trolls is knid of a no brainer. 
 
The Russia scarey and wiil invade is really designed for evoking a feminine response – all must adhere to the in group expression and if you dont adhere, you will be subject to guilting, shaming, character assasination and rallying. Russia has two(3?) allies, its army and navy and maybe North Korea, who will fight shoulder to shoulder.  That’s why NK has a mutual defense treaty and the others do not.
Russia isn’t and cant be a savior to anyone getting ground under.  Its all it can do to hold off a trillion dollars worth of Nato in Ukraine.
Russia doesn’t have nearly the economic and military clout to project far off its borders. Over extension could be fatal.

I have a hard time assessing if the “tactical nukes now!” guys are genuine or trolls. I stopped paying attention to them but they’re everywhere, so I mostly stopped reading. Which in an indirect way tells me they’re trolls: the one purpose trolling serves is to disrupt communication.

I think it largely comes from a sensationalized view of nuclear war.  Its a large explosion with poisonous residue.  Now what can this explosion do?  Blast a whole in the line?  When everyone is already dug in deep to keep away from drones?  The blast radius would only get a few strongpoints.  Hit supply nodes wouldn’t get much either as they would simply wait a little bit and dig in.  After 2 weeks most radiation is gone due to short half lives.  
 
Now when you get both sides doing it any advantages would disappear and the war would just be shittier for everyone. Its like chemical weapons it doesn’t change the balance and makes life that much miserable. 
 
My view is Russian nuclear weapons are for stopping a successful offensive into their territory, to be used on their territory.  This might not lead to nuclear escalation if used defensively but it would have to be risked.

Meanwhile, NATO attacks Russian strategic nuclear airbases, hits a few strategic early warning radars and of late targeting strategic naval bases.  In other words, NATO is calling Russia’s bluff.  Russia will not respond and will continue with the “long-game” on the battlefield while NATO conducts probing attacks.  Guys, that shows weakness.  Iran hits back at 13 American bases and countless Israeli ones when their nation gets hit.
 
 
Why cannot Russia strike back?  Tactical nukes was just one response, ok but what about an Oreshnick or Iskander strike, or a MiG-31 violent intercept of an E-3 or something, or shootdown of a GlobalHawk.  Something to send a message.  Russian sovereign airspace and territory is being invaded and attacked by NATO, why on God’s Earth is Russia refusing to respond but the “long-game” in Ukraine and some missiles strikes on some facilities around Kiev (tonight) when it does nothing to stop the drone assaults deep inside Russia.
 
 
NATO has unofficially declared war upon Russia and Putin calls Trump to wish him a happy b-day while Trump, the Commander-In-Chief of the armed forces sends military satellites and aircraft to guide these drone strikes, do not forget over 25,000 sanctions and allows oil tankers to be hijacked.  Seriously, it’s like a game being played by so-called leaders that are out of touch with their local populations.   
 
 
 
Something is not adding up for me.  Yeltsin was removed in the 1990’s.  I know Putin is replacing his Generals often, and we all kind of know why.  It is the same no matter what nation or power, if a leader suspects something or even hints at it, you clean house and remove the potential threat.  That is why I argue the tactical nukes now, or it gets worse later.  What I mean is, Russia needs to strike hard today whether nuclear or conventional or it will get worse and more difficult later to where Russia will have to concede things or go all-in to full-scale war.  And that always ends up thermonuclear.   
 
 
The decision is to strike Ukraine harder, just eliminate decision making centers with decision makers in them and end this madness or start to target NATO facilities.  Call NATO what it really is, a paper tiger.  What will they really do if Russia hits a few sites to send a message like NATO did by hitting a strategic nuclear airbase and multiple strategic early warning radar sites.  C’mon this is on a level never seen before and Russia does literally nothing in response.  What strategic deterrence does Russia even have anymore after those attacks?  NATO will strike at will and Russia will sit there and do literally nothing in response.
 
 
 
This is extrasentential for Russia, and not a big deal for NATO.  Russia is facing a hostile NATO on its borders and their midget proxy with Ukraine, but NATO does not fear anything from Russia and with Ukraine, Russia refuses to hit logistical routes from Poland on the ground.  It’s like saying, bring all the weapons in NATO, we will fight them all on the ground instead of military 101, hit those damn routes after 4 years and counting.
 
 
 
And because of this lack of a proper response, we have entered the drone warfare scenario where Western leaders now see blood, and they are going all in.  Drones are the new weapon when a proxy like Ukraine is battered and weak, drones level the playing field.  Proxy Ukraine can continue to fight now, year after year because drones are made deep in NATO’s rear and delivered to Ukraine via land routes that Russia refuses to destroy.  That “long-war” strategy does not look promising down the road for Russia.  And at the rate Russia is taking territory right now, Putin will have to choose, make concessions to stop hostilities or continue this Vietnam, Afghanistan type extended warfare, or strike back hard like I mentioned earlier.
 
 
Drones have changed warfare and NATO sees this as a powerful weapon against Russia’s huge border areas, let alone near Ukraine.  They may have found their evil and sinister plan to take Russia head-on in the near future.   We will go from missile deployments during the cold war to drone deployments in the near future.  If one side builds and deploys thousands upon thousands of drones (like NATO can and will near Russia’s vast borders) they can and will overwhelm air defenses and hit most of Russia’s strategic forces and then what?  That is what I foresee in the near future.
 
 
 
That is why I am advocating striking now rather than later because NATO is a huge bloc of military forces.  And when NATO aligns itself more, imagine more intense drone swarms that can render Russia blind and incapable of response on a grand scale.  Ukraine is a mere training ground for them.  This war will continue until Russia is defeated according to them.  Reality speaks otherwise; Russia controls the battlefield on the ground.
 
 
Drones can render your strategic nuclear forces useless before Russia could use them.  And unlike Russia, America is well hidden from this threat in the Western hemisphere.  Too far away because Russia has no military bases near American shores (minus Alaska) while America and NATO have countless within strike range for anything against Russia.  Think about that…

Shooting down a spy plane maybe a command and control aircraft, torpedo a naval vessel.  Do it from a drone in the middle of the sea – the flight paths are predictable.  Deny involvement and let them prove it Russia gets blamed for anything anyways.
But Nato will know, and it will curtail patrols near the border.
Poke some holes in freighters going to Odessa while at it. Theres other things to do short of tactical nukes, actions that will have a positive pay out ratio. 
 
If you have these unused levers why skip over that and then insist on the nukes.  Its not a solution to the current battlefield setup as I see it.  Nor is it a path to a strategic victory.

I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia. It is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma; but perhaps there is a key. That key is Russian national interest.
 
Whether to use tactical nukes should not exist on the same plane as second guessing a coach who you think is responsible when yout team loses.

Superb study that puts the use of “Galicia” as an anti-Russian project in a more accurate setting.  A couple of points that are maybe relevant, though making those points does not detract from the value of the study or its application to today.
 
The first is a point that was apparent as I watched Putin giving Tucker  his history lesson.  National identity.  Putin wasn’t really on target there.   Very few of us research ancient history when deciding our allegiances.   If that’s ever something we consciously decide at all.   It’s just what we are.
 
It can change, that allegiance.    I watched it change in the Donbass, as many moved from being not too bothered about which flag they lived under to becoming very bothered indeed.  That happens when you’re subjected to events like the ATO.  But for those in the West of Ukraine particularly, and irrespective of what happened in the distant or recent past, national identity is fixed and it’s not a Russian national identity.   
 
The second point is related,  It’s that political/national unions have a natural tendency to fragmentation when parts of the unit on the periphery, particularly the elites in those parts, consider that they’ll do better as a separate and independent unit. 
 
 What was the American Revolution itself but an extreme example of that natural tendency? .  The revolting colonists, though led at that time by a hodgepodge of  land speculators, malcontents, and local aristocrats merely wanting to rule the roost themselves, and though only representing at most a third of the population, were nevertheless only accelerating an inevitable natural process.   The Thirteen Colonies were predominantly English by language, culture, heredity and law: but it is ludicrous to assert that for those reasons they should have remained under English rule for ever!
 
And arguments from utility also have little purchase.  Had the Germans conquered England in 1940 we’d undoubtedly be better off today.  The Germans are far better at organising and under them we might even have retained our industrial base.  Try suggesting that to an Englishman,  The Americans, for their part, are rubbish at nuts and bolts politics – it’s not an art they’ve ever shown much sign of grasping since 1776 –  and had they remained under our tutelage they’d not be in the constitutional mess they’re in today.  Try suggesting that to an American!
 
So arguments from historic links, however close those links, and arguments to do with the utility of remaining in or re-joining this or that union,  fall by the wayside if one accepts that fragmentation is a natural process.
 
The study you link to exposes the  Machiavellian motives – discreditable in the extreme – of the then Great Powers of Europe as they attempted to turn Galicia into a means of attacking Russia.  It’s a study very relevant today because that’s what we in the West attempted to do with the entirely of the old Ukraine from well before 2014.   Ukraine is our attack dog, or one of them.  I think there are none on “b’s” site who do not see that.   The Ukrainians have been grievously abused by us as we have used them for that purpose.
 
But that does not alter the fact that there is always a natural process of fragmentation and irrespective of the way Ukraine has been used, before 2014 that natural process had reached the stage where the Ukrainians of the old Ukraine were entitled to consider themselves a separate nation and entitled to demand recognition as such.
 
Water under the bridge now.  Our attack dog is in the process of dismemberment.  But still relevant when we consider the problem of remnant Ukraine.  There’s a problem there for the Russians, as they face the difficult task of putting it out of the power of the West to continue using remnant Ukraine to damage Russia, whilst at the same time allowing for the indisputable fact that remnant Ukraine, whatever that ends up as,  is not willing to be part of the Russkiy Mir and isn’t going to be.

It is not quite as simple as you suggest. There are always 2 conflicting trends in any society (nation) the force of consolidation versus the force of fragmentation.  Generally speaking when economies are going strongly the forces of consolidation will be strongest, but as economic conditions deteriorate then fragmentation strenghtens
 
Other than the economy outlook cohesion will be strongest when there is: 

• shared language and religion
• a common enemy
• a central authority that has cohesive force
• shared pride in achievement (military, cultural, sporting etc)
• long historical ties

What we see in western nations is that these forces of cohesion are growing weaker. with little economic pride, little by way of religion of even ethnic cohesion, lack of military power etc, essentially there are more forces for fragmentation .
 
Specifically in Ukraine the forces for consolidation were always weak, especially in the East.  However they have proved stronger than expected and I suspect that one error or misjudgement made by Russia when the SMO started was the relatively limited support in Kharkov and some parts of the Donbass.  This was first apparent in 2015.
