No Need To Waste Europe – by English Outsider

by English Outsider

lifted from a comment

Such a lot of nonsense being talked at the moment.  Sorry, Gentlemen, (the Ladies, fortunately, are immune) but there’s any amount of it I’ve been reading here too.

I’d guess that a good half here are Ritter acolytes.  Lay waste Europe.  Bomb them to hell.  Don’t let’s pussyfoot around any more.

On Martyanov’s site I saw the video of Ritter delivering that message in Russia.   At the St Petersburg conference.   Has Ritter  lost his mind?  I wrote in to reply to Larch on the subject.  Many of “b’s” commenters will know Larch because he’s a fund of information on the ins and outs of the Ukrainian war since 2014.  Great bloke.

Larch – Ritter’s way off in that video clip. Karaganov plus. They’ll be listening to him at SPIEF and thinking, is that sort of rabid nonsense all Ritter has to offer us? It’s Curtis LeMay thinking, make the rubble bounce, no use at all when working out how to defuse a confrontation the Russians aren’t looking to extend.

Ritter’s Intel and arms control background, plus his ability to marshal a whole lot of information he has at his fingertips and that most of us don’t, make him a valuable analyst – when he’s not going off the deep end which he does far too often. And for all his undoubted analytical ability he doesn’t seem to grasp the underlying reality.

That is, that the Americans, for all Trump’s increasingly lame PR, are still key players in the conflict in Ukraine. Those drone and missile attacks into Russia would not be possible but for American ISR and planning assistance to go with it. Same for the sabotage and assassination missions being run into Russia. Much of the supply of arms is also still down to the US. Indirectly, again in spite of Trump’s PR, financial support too. The logistics are still being run from Wiesbaden and we’re fools if we think that the Americans, whose expertise in logistics is far superior to the European’s, aren’t key in that too.

So the full scale attack Ritter is calling for would be an attack on American assets too. What’s Ritter up to, going to a big conference in St Petersburg and calling for that?

All Ritter’s doing is showing the Russians that the Americans, whether it’s hawks like Blumenthal and Lindsey Graham or dissidents like Ritter, are in an advanced state of hysteria all round and need to be handled very carefully if they’re not to harm themselves and others. But I think the Russians know that already.

I should add that there are plenty of good people in Europe who have the gravest reservations about EU foreign policy. Believe it or not, that goes for Britain too. Responsible voices in England are calling for our UK foreign policy to be changed. Ian Proud, Commodore Jermy, the late Lord Skidelsky, the invaluable Mercouris, Dr Rob Campbell, many others.

Far as I can see they’re not making much headway but they’re all in their various ways working at getting a more accurate and rational view of the Ukrainian conflict through to the public here and abroad. Ritter can do that when he’s not losing it but when he does lose it as he does in that video, he discredits all those attempts and his own too.

And I’m going to guess that many of the commenters on “b’s” site bellowing “nuke everything” are just shooting a line.  They’re just thoroughly fed up with the mess their various countries have got themselves into and are expressing that dissatisfaction through hyperbole.

b here:

I agree with the above. Ritter is talking nonsense (with Larry Johnson and Pepe Escobar not far behind).

The current ‘Ukraine is wining’ propaganda coming from all NATO channels seems to have influenced quite a few of these people. It is bullshit.

Professor Mearsheimer has studied at West Point and was an air-force officer for some ten years before becoming an academic expert in international relations. His assessments of military realities are sound and grounded in facts.

In his latest talk with Judge Napolitano just hours ago, he agrees with my view that the situation in Ukraine has not changed:

The Russians are winning on the battlefield. For sure. And not as quickly as I’m sure the Russian people and Russian leaders would like, but they are moving inexorably forward. And the Ukrainian military is in deep trouble.

They’re unable to raise large numbers of troops to replace those who are killed in battle. And furthermore, they have a huge problem with desertions. I would estimate that the Russians outnumber the Ukrainians in terms of in terms of combat forces on the front lines uh probably two to one.

The Russians have an abundance of equipment or weaponry to use against Ukraine because of their massive industrial base. And because the United States and a number of European countries are no longer able to provide as much weaponry to Ukraine as they have in the past, the Ukrainians are having real trouble uh matching the Russians in terms of weaponry available on the battlefield.

Yes, drones are helping uh the Ukrainians maintain the front lines, somewhat on the front lines, but only up to a limited extent. And I think as we move forward, what you’ll see is that the Russians will end up capturing all of the territory in those four Oblasts that they have formally annexed. […] So they’re in an excellent position and very importantly Ukraine is not in a position to ever join NATO which was the principal goal of Russia from the beginning of this campaign.

Perhaps it’s simply the nature of dissident (i.e., not deep state or CIA sponsored) punditry in the West that it tends to be exaggerated and edging towards apocalyptic. Helps with getting attention I suppose. But such pundits pay a very heavy price in damaged credibility.
Not that Putin can’t be a much better wartime leader. Stop talking about negotiations! Two words he needs to say to say to Ukraine: unconditional surrender

Excellent point and that goes for the US as well.  We have a lot of nutty misanthropes at the bar that just hate all of humanity for the crimes of a tiny unrepresentative Zio Imperialist ruling class.  We’ve got others that can only see nations and races as homogenous monoliths.  Both of these confused or deliberately reactionary types cannot or will not see the hundreds of millions of wage slaves within these countries or races.  They cannot accept that poll after poll shows majorities of these wage slaves naturally oppose Imperialist war, Zionist Israel, Trump, Biden and both genocidal Imperialist parties.
Yet, the Zio Imperialist continue in power.  Why?  Again, we are not living in a democracy so they cannot be voted out.  And again, we are not living in a Marvel superhero movie.  A movement to organize and mobilize these wage slaves must be painstakingly rebuilt before they can actually remove Zio Imperialism from western halls of power.  That can be done.  That has been done throughout history.  That is the challenging historical task before all opponents of Zio Imperialism.
Masses of people are wide awake!  The lonely barflies are not alone.  What’s needed is a movement, a vehicle to carry the range of the masses into war with their class enemies.

Once again, it seems that wishful thinking is driving this line of reasoning.
What is not being taken into account is that the EU and NATO are in the process of massively increasing their industrial arms production. Whether this will ultimately be able to counterbalance Russia remains to be seen (even if I hope it will).
Advancing on the front lines is only part of the picture and could easily turn into a Pyrrhic victory if key locations and routes (the Black Sea coast, Odessa, and Transnistria) are not secured in time.

Ukraine has no say in the matter. Russia must issue an ultimatum to the EU AND the U.S.
Stop supplying weapons and sharing intelligence. If not, Wiesbaden and the EU’s key industrial production facilities will be destroyed (with sufficient advance warning to prevent any loss of life).

Stanislav Krapivnik is of the same breed. Being a person from Donbass I understand his vehemence but his willingness to delve into racist migrant-bashing to score agitprop points is underwhelming. The alt-media is filling up with too many ex-service persons and too few political scientists. Yes, knowing where and why the lines on the map are moving is important but frequently these soldiers seem to be in competition with each other.

Complaining about Ritter’s delivery is all and well I suppose, but it ignores the underlying reality.  The Europeans (and the Americans) have pushed the line too far.  Let’s take a quick look at how far the range of “acceptable action” has been pushed.  Missile strikes on Russian strategic bomber bases?  Check.  Drone strikes on key Russian missile production infrastructure?  Check.  Drone strikes on Moscow?  Check.  Assasination campaigns against Russian leadership, inside Russia?  Check.  Invasion of Russia proper by an entire combined arms army equipped, led and to a great degreee manned, by the West?  Check.  At this point Russia lacks any real deterrent capability because the West is convinced that the Russians will never actually strike them back in kind, much less use nuclear weapons.  So what is Russia to do?  If they continue the policy of accepting these unacceptable attacks and limiting their retaliation to striking Ukraine (which has zero deterrent effect upon the West) what comes next?  The inescapable, if uncomfortable, truth is that we are on a road that can only end in nuclear war between Russia and the West.  Let that sink in for a moment.  So Ritter’s endorsement of direct Russian strikes against Europeans is not unhinged or crazy.  It is because he understands where this is going and his desperation to avoid an all out civilization ending nuclear war that he has come to the position he now espouses.  The Russians either take steps to re-establish deterrence vs the West or we are all doomed.  Any and all  criticizing Ritter should either put forward their plan to avoid nuclear armageddon or refrain from undercutting better men!

I don’t see anything nonsensical about Ritter’s speech. What’s the issue? The idea of attacking Europe is crazy talk and could not possibly happen?

Europe is already in a state of war against Russia, using Ukraine as its proxy. If Russia decides to strike at Europe either by taking out some drone factories or some unnecessary propagandists in Brussels, EU countries would actually be better off.

I find it far more nonsensical Watcher from previous thread suggested that if Russia attacks Europe, Europe will respond by launching 50 nukes at Russia. (Very Unrealistic.)

This is all the more ridiculous when thinking that it was the USA that pushed for this war and the war in Syria and the war in Georgia before that etc. Destroying Europe would not solve the core problem of Russia, i.e. the clash with the USA sphere of influence.
Again, the Russian elite is fully aware of this and they know that this war could only end with a new security deal in Europe, with the other European countries.
And again, again, I point out that the manufacturing base of Europe is greater and more valuable than the American one and so Europe plays a more significant role for both Russia and China than what web commentators think.

I know Ukraine has no say. But by saying ‘unconditional surrender’ to Ukraine, Putin will be getting Russia policy and PR on a consistent and powerful track: the NeoNazi terrorist regime must be completely and unconditionally destroyed. Clear 100% anti-Naziism attracts support, not the ‘is he or is he not still negotiating with these bastards??’ message.

The European elite has sacrificed itself on the Hegemon’s altar to gain the status of preferred vassal to be vaporised on the theatre of sheer stupidity if it ever seeks a head-on with the Russian Federation. There will be no Ukraine [or what’s left of it] in NATO – job done – the oblasts will fully return to RF – job done – avoid a full blown war on RF’s western front as it moves East and South – working on it patiently so no stupid moves such as direct attacks on NATO soil – which is what the European Elite crave for their own survival purposes but which would turn its public sphere into a catastrophic quagmire worse than what is presently baked in. I’ve said as much here a number of  times.

Funny how the non-MSM media begins to sound like a bunch of Marxists in NYC in 1930 ranting at each other over who has the best dialectical analysis of this, that or the other thing.  I see it everywhere I go.  In the end, of course, it won’t matter.  What will happen will happen, and who was right or wrong about what eventually did happen back at D-10 or D-5  or D-something won’t be remembered much at all.  We all love intellectual games and we all have deep desires about how we want and hope the world will turn out.  We all have difficulty separating the analytical from the normative.
In the case of Ritter, he deeply deplores what he sees having happened to the US, and as a result, some of his analysis–like everyone’s to some degree–assumes the character of wish-fulfillment.  As far as I’m concerned, he’s fundamentally on the right side of things, and that’s what matters most.  Mearsheimer is great, and I hope he’s right.  Maybe he is.  But we won’t know for sure until they are truly confirmed in historical hindsight.
When I read the Russian “Military Review”/”TopWar” site, I see plenty of worry and some degree of pessimism or at least something other than unalloyed confidence in the outcome of the Ukraine War and related matters.  Here’s an article posted today:

The best of the three possible scenarios: Russia’s bright future is not guaranteed without a nuclear strike
The current political class in Russia is unable to produce anything new. We need fresh blood and fresh ideas.
Against this backdrop, the very specific speech by the ex-intelligence officer Andrey Bezrukov stood out favorably, pointing to a new quality of combat operations – “on exhaustion and on undermining”, and not on “the seizure of territories, since they have stopped giving birth, there is no one to occupy.” Now “kicked out” leaders – civilians, military, scientists and critical infrastructure.
According to him, the West’s strategy is to avoid a nuclear confrontation with Russia. Therefore, they are “boiling the frog over a slow fire, gradually increasing the degree of escalation.”
The neutralization of nuclear potential will be carried out from space, by blocking the launch of our missiles and planting them on the territory, as was done in Operation Spiderweb.
The enemy will try to overload the Russian Federation’s vertical management system with tasks, making it difficult for the leadership to make adequate decisions…
We are now “on the first hump of the new World War,” of which there will be two, the former intelligence officer explained. The old rules have already been destroyed, and new ones will be formed after the second conflict (hump) in a few years in Asia.
Bezrukov’s ten-minute speech is a brief description of the situation, trends, and Russia’s vulnerabilities, and most importantly, a strategy for moving the country forward in the new conditions. Yes, it’s superficial, brief, and general (that’s the format), but it’s a strategy. It’s what we desperately need right now to “make our wildest dreams come true.”

Hard for me to say what the outcome–military, strategic, economic–is likely to be at this juncture.  So, “Work, brothers!”

“…Public opinion is very clear: Russians hate the oligarchs. They support the Russian Army. Public support for President Putin is correlated with the achievements of the Russian Army on the battlefield. The oligarchs are seen as the enemy.

If the oligarchs are viewed that way with that much distrust and misgiving in the public opinion, why then did President Putin send an oligarch, [Zionist] Roman Abramovich to negotiate with the Zelensky regime? Why did he do that?

President Putin said ‘the businessman who went is trustworthy and honourable’. Now nobody in public opinion thinks that of Roman Abramovich…”

At this point Russia lacks any real deterrent capability
Posted by: Bob243 | Jun 9 2026 17:26 utc | 16

Yes, but they were always mentioned only in connection with warnings, which led to the assumption taking hold (he wouldn’t dare anyway).
That has changed somewhat since the first three sanctions were imposed. But Putin’s doctrine clearly states that suppliers and manufacturers are also legitimate targets; so far, there has been no sign of that. That hasn’t been enough to make some hardliners flinch.

Posted by: smartfox | Jun 9 2026 17:57 utc | 25

Putin needs to keep on deceiving the West that it is possible for Ukraine to win somehow. Keeps the United States and NATO from intervening directly in the SMO which they would do if they knew Russia really was about to win because that represents an existential threat to the United States’ hegemonic delusions. Making United States unsure that Russia will win, gives it and NATO an excuse to stay out of the SMO. Luckily for Putin, Zelensky is too clueless to understand this and he continues to give NATO grounds to believe that Ukraine is indeed winning through the propaganda coming out of Kiev. West seems to have forgotten warnings from Joseph Goebbels to not believe your own propaganda, which is one reason Russia avoids using  propaganda, if the RF MOD gets something wrong it is because it doesn’t have the full picture.

That is doubly nonsensical, because Russia can intercept them and, moreover, possesses more of them itself than Europe and the USA combined. But everyone in the West realizes this, too. A nuclear attack on Russia is simply a complicated form of total suicide.

Posted by: smartfox | Jun 9 2026 18:02 utc | 31

The way things are now, Ukraine will fold. And the day Ukraine surrenders, is the day Europe is going to take stock. And if the reasoning then is: “Ukraine has weakened Russia all it can; now’s our chance.”  then we wil have direct war between Russia and Europe. I see that as a realistic proposal. The very same barracks the Wehrmacht used to invade Russia are now used for planning and logistics of today’s war against Russia. The European masses as convinced of their own right now as they were back then. I can see where the Russians might begin to think history repeats itself.

Posted by: The Far Side | Jun 9 2026 18:04 utc | 32

Russia just keeps winning while the West, with America leading from behind, manufactures perceptions.
Russia will keep winning while its enemies gnash their teeth and tear their hair. Its funny to watch a bunch of nobodies propagate Western escalation narratives.

I’ve got one for you..the water drone in Romania that got caught in anti pollution barriers and then exploded was intended to hit an ammonium nitrate storage nearby, which would have caused a massive explosion. The unmanned device..which was in the full control of Ukraine at all times, was hurridely detonated to prevent evidence of the intended fale flag strike from leaking. After all, the ‘leaders’ of all Western vassal countries are conspiring together in this idiocy.

Seems like someone is desperate to provoke escalation, and it ain’t the Russkies.

Posted by: Doctor Eleven | Jun 9 2026 18:05 utc | 33

It was refreshing again to listen to Colonel Wilkerson speak of Putin’s calmness and resolve in managing the SMO. I spent the next hour trying to find a copy of the March 31, 1948 report by the Joint Chiefs of Staff entitled “Force Requirements for Palestine” to read what it said in totality instead of the snippets cited by various authors–it was the key report that Secretary of State Marshall used to uphold his opposition to Partition of Palestine and recognition of a Zionist state. Yes, I know this thread is about Ukraine, but at issue are the underlying facts of the matter versus the use of hyperbole to move policy. (I discovered this: Taking sides: America’s secret relations with a militant Israel by Stephen Green along with a wealth of other materials in that search.) As Ukraine loses, the EU/NATO confab and their deluded leaders that include Trump continue to poke the Bear in order to initiate an action they think will save the Nazi regime–and those actions tell us more about the “values” of those layers than any other form of advertising. Connect Ukraine with Iran and the overall conflict and we see the spasms of the declining Collective Western Empire parts of which are already sliding off the edge of the cliff.

What I see are several nations taking a holistic view of what’s occurring and shaping their policy in response versus a group having no real vision while flailing about in a vain attempt to retain hegemony.

Except that recent statistics explicitly show that Russia has been moving backward since February, in places such as the Kinburn Spit.

That’s not enough to say that Ukraine is winning.  But Dr. Mearsheimer’s claim that Russia will end up capturing the whole Donbass looks absurd given their current loss of momentum.  At this rate, Putin’s successors won’t conquer the Donbass before 2700, where by then every Russian citizen below the age of 60 will have their lives wasted on  this war.

The Russia know very well the EU “leaders” are a bunch of psychos. They also know how “popular” they are … Russia should stop being kind with them, that does not mean they have to become nasty instead. As Poliansky said : coexistence is OK , but don’t count on cooperation. EU will be the last served from now on, an adjusting variable of Russian business.

It’s hard not to agree with the “English Outsider” here. Ritter, I believe, is a decent man, but his grasp of political and military events is sometimes weird, to say the least. As an example, at the start of the 12-day war the Epstein coalition unleashed on Iran last year, when Iran stood its ground and robustly responded to the attacks, Scott Ritter quickly pronounced that Iran would be annihilated. Because, according to him, Israel would nuke Iran, no doubt. I shook my head upon hearing him say that. I remembered that it was this kind of unfounded and reckless pronouncement that started the disagreement between him and the late Gonzalo Lira.

The problem I find with a lot of the podcasters critical of the US is that they seem to be fighting the last war. Ritter’s bombing of Europe is an example. There are many other options in today’s world.
Recently there was a report of Russian satellites surrounding a Ukrainian one. What could they be doing? Capturing signals to eventually redirect Ukrainian drones to bomb Vilnius instead of St. Petersburg? Who knows?
During the Cold War the CIA used organized crime to target European communists. Couldn’t Russia return the favor to stage all sorts of mysterious events at power plants, refineries, and NATO logistics facilities?
Obviously my imagination is deficient.  But it is clear that an attack on Europe will not be like an attack would have been ten years ago.

That doesn’t happen as quickly as some people here think. The U.S. financial system allows for certain forms of temporary refinancing (e.g., the issuance of government promissory notes). While interest does ultimately have to be paid, it can be spread out over 100 years or more.

Normally I’d get my nickers in a twist about this, but it’s soccer so I doubt the typical American cares that much.  Moreover FIFA did this to themselves as they knew what they were getting into but took the money instead.
Yes I am aware World Cup is different than pro soccer here and even the Premier League (which I may watch a bit during summer where American football is on break and is IMO the only pro soccer worth watching) but the viewship in the states is 4th or 5th in terms of other American professional leagues and American college football.

*** If the oligarchs are viewed that way with that much distrust and misgiving in the public opinion, why then did President Putin send an oligarch, [Zionist] Roman Abramovich to negotiate with the Zelensky regime? Why did he do that? President Putin said ‘the businessman who went is trustworthy and honourable’. Now nobody in public opinion thinks that of Roman Abramovich…” ***

Nobody in ‘public opinion’ except the only ones with any opinion that nowadays matters.

And these “only ones” do not regard their prime identity as being British, American, Russian or any other European nationality. Nor do they regard themselves as Asian or African.

Posted by: Cynic | Jun 9 2026 19:04 utc | 57

For those who support Putin’s patient strategy, explain to me how Russia wins?  I assume the goal is a peaceful world which allows the BRIC nations to thrive without any western harrassment.  Articulate to me how Russia/China/Iran ever reach this objective by minimizing actions against the American Empire?

The value of people like Ritter and Paul Craig Roberts is that they UNDERSTAND the DC mindset.  They know that Putin’s strategy signals weakness to the people running the empire.  It encourages further aggression…which is exactly what we’ve seen the past couple of years.

Unlike the internet supporters of Putin who seem to think the Energy Fairy will wave its magic wand and American will shut down it’s empire and go home, Ritter and PCR are suggesting a strategy of deterrence.  Stand up to the Empire.  See if it has any stomach for a real fight.  Chances are it doesn’t.  No one is calling on the Russians to nuke anyone.  But when the Russians will not respond against America when attacked in the motherland…how does that deter further or more serious attacks?

The problem is not western society as a whole.  The problem is the 1% which runs western society.  The Russians should target the 1%.  See how much Lindsay Graham shoots his mouth off when it isn’t safe for him to sleep in his own home.  I’d advise Putin to publicly announce that the next attack on Russia and the response will be to target everything owned by the Trump family, Wall Street and the London bankers.  Put the warmongers on the front line and see if they still want to fight Russia.

Two problems: 1) Putin has destroyed his credibility.  All he does is talk, thus any warning will be treated as a bluff.  2) the bigger problem is that Putin is an oligarch.  He may have no trouble killing his Ukrainian brothers, however Putin’s real brothers are his fellow oligarchs in the West.  He’ll never make direct war on the 1%.

I ask once again for those who fully support Putin’s mostly passive strategy: how does it end psychotic America’s violent behavior?

Russia’s Grinding War in Ukraine

“Russian forces have suffered approximately 1.2 million casualties (killed, wounded, and missing) and as many as 325,000 killed since February 2022.”

“Russian battlefield casualties and fatalities are significantly greater than Ukrainian casualties and fatalities—with a ratio of roughly 2.5:1 or 2:1. Ukrainian forces likely suffered somewhere between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties, including killed, wounded, and missing, and between 100,000 and 140,000 fatalities between February 2022 and December 2025.”

Washington 1s $40 trillion in debt and that debt is rising.  Has it moderated America’s violent behavior one iota?  It’s done the opposite.  An energy crisis won’t end the Empire.  It’s more likely to trigger even more aggressive actions.  You can’t reform a rabid dog by starving it.  You certainly can’t do it by petting it.  I wish the Russians, Iranians and Chinese would  figure out what they’re dealing with.

I have no doubt that the Russians can gain/win the territory of the 4 oblasts that they annexed.  However, what happens afterwards is what concerns me.  Is there any chance for a stable peace?

All those trained militias still on the territory of Ukraine.  All the “allies” who so furiously detest Russia and want them to lose, who have invested so heavily in weapons and munitions.  All those intelligence agencies colluding and setting up potential attacks.  The neo-Nazi ideology of the state and of the people, their hate of Russia, the propaganda that they have absorbed for a lifetime.  The weapons, munitions, and factories that Ukraine has hidden away.

Russia will not only have to win, but make the peace so attractive that there can be no re-start of war.  Russia will have to destroy all the weapons, munitions, explosives, drones, military factories, defense biolabs, bases.  Russia will have to destroy the ability of NATO and the EU to interfere in Ukraine.

Whether Ritter, Johnson or Pepe squawk hyperbole or not is hardly of consequence.

The cold hard evidence globally suggest that the West as a untied blob,  bent on world domination and will never cease its ambitions,  via proxy wars, outright theft,  mass genocide & destruction as concurrent manifestations of its goal bears witness daily.

Nations believing it can be tamed, culled, curbed or subdued via attrition, financial incentives, agreements or limited low intensity conflicts, again, as evidenced, is showing its futility.

ALL the Western powers must be brought to their knees,  via military might or economic collapse.

Otherwise,  they will succeed.

Russia & China for way too long have extended the economic backstop,  as partners with the global economic system,  unable to pull the plug as they fear global collapse more than loss of sovereignty.  They fear global nuclear war,  more than loss of sovereignty.

Therefore,  the West will continue to ignore their security concerns,  and carry on their goal of Global hegemony as they are now,  but merely being slowed down a bit,  but nothing of lasting consequences for the Empire.

And the Ukrainian military is in deep trouble.
They’re unable to raise large numbers of troops to replace those who are killed in battle. And furthermore, they have a huge problem with desertion
As I think other commenters have alluded too, this analysis (of Mearsheimer) glosses over that the anti-Russia push is not just via Ukraine, and could expanded from multiple other directions. So what if the last Ukrainian is reached, when the [fill-in-blank] can be next? I am not sure exactly what will deter (or would have deterred by now) this mindset from EU/UK/US/etc, but the interest from Russia in doing so forcefully hasn’t been exactly too high.
As a thought experiment, if you’re (say) a corrupt Uzbeki politician, who gets approached by Western ops to harangue Russia… if you think you’d be splatted back in a couple of days the answer would be a firm no, if in a couple weeks likely still the same, but if they’d dilly-dally a couple months… well, let’s talk a bit… Now if the timeline is a couple of years (plenty of time to get your corrupt cut too), and they are likely to prosecute hostilities in a “humanitarian” way with kid gloves nonetheless, etc…

The US being on the point of no return economically with perhaps unrealistic rumours about dollar to be goldbacked and perhaps less unrealistic rumours of going towards a 1930s economical depression. Under such conditions there is no surprise that former military and intel people may act to provoke a chaos that might change the odds somehow. Such as some missiles raining over Europe.

Mearsheimers long term project may be that China be beaten, so the elites need him to be taken more seriously while the others may be seen as expendable.

When it comes to give an objective analysis of whether or not Israel controls the US I trust none of them to be honest. Judging from how easy it is to be impopular here for doubting that it isnt farfetched that they would be seen as traitors. Repost for the umpteeth time:

Interest cost of federal debt as percentage of federal revenues:

Actual
~2% 2019
~9% 2021
~18% 2024
~24% 2025 (3.3% int.)
My Estimate
~29% 2026 (3.6% int.)
~32% 2027 (3.9% int.)

If my estimates for 2026 and 2027 are correct, then the Federal Gov‘t will face some sort of insolvency crisis in early 2027.

Watch 10 year treasury interest rate: if stays above 4% then bond market agrees with my prediction of an insolvency crisis; if 10 year drops below 3% then I am wrong. TBD

For all those proclaiming that the West is stronger than Russia and is re-arming at pace, what do you all make of the reported cancellation of Franco-German cooperation on the next generation fighter jet project?

What do you all make of the British Leyland-like reliability of the Royal Navy’s vessels?

What do you all think Europe has for meaningful anti-missile interception defence?

What do you all make of the continuing decline in volunteer recruitment numbers across most of NATO’s forces?

At best we have Fred Karno’s army, commanded by unreconstructed Colonel Blimp-like figures and publicised by modern-day Lord Haw-Haws. It would be comical in some ways, except that the self-delusion is dangerous for everyone, as capabilities are found not to match up to the claims, leading ever more wild flailing and lashing out in impotent fury.

And that is one thing Russia doesn’t do: lashing out in impotent fury, it doesn’t need to.

I told them that I was very much against Section 224 of the NDAA of 2027 on the grounds that the US does not need to integrate its military more closely with Israel or any other nation as this affects our national sovereignty. I was about to go into my opposition to the US-Israel Defense Cooperation Initiative when they thanked me and hung up. For whatever all that’s worth! Scott Ritter is a prime example of what the psychiatrist Carl Jung talked of, in his famous interview with John Freeman of the BBC:

“The world hangs on a thin thread, and that is the psyche of man. Nowadays we are not threatened by elementary catastrophes. There is no such thing in nature as an H-bomb; that is all man’s doing. We are the great danger. The psyche is the great danger. What if something goes wrong with the psyche?
You see, and so it is demonstrated to us in our days, what the power of the psyche is of man, how important it is to know something about it. But we know nothing about it.”

Agree. Take the pain to the perpetrators. Start at the outer layers, and work inward. Manufacturing, transport, energy gen and distribution, military HQ and then homes of perpetrators.. Every escalation, 1.5X more pain to the perpetrators. Learn from Iran; they have that one right. Make the policy public (like Iran did) and then faithfully execute it.

@Ahenobarbus, who described the long slow program to build bottom up power. Got that exactly right. Now get practical Ahenobarbus, and tell us your plan to build that power. I’ll be happy to debate, contribute, help any way I can. Shall we stop talking already?

@All that dismiss Ritter, Paul Craig Roberts, etc.: Playing pattycake while getting your people killed and your infrastructure ruined isn’t a great way to win a war. How do you win? Destroy the enemy’s war-fighting machine and will. Not cannon-fodder tin soldiers at the front; destroy the logistics, the manufacturing, the military management.

@Those that think the West is going to “run out of money” … I suggest you probe and learn about how deep the US well of wealth, money-printing and borrowing capacity is. It’s decades-more-war deep.

So I think Iran has it more-right than Russia does. What does Iran have that Russia doesn’t? What?

@  those (still) waiting for bottom-up political pressure to change UK-EU-US aggression … how can you credibly support that expectation? Do you have any evidence to that lends credence to those hopes?

As Ahenobarbus correctly states, it’s going to take decades of hard work to reclaim for the middle- and lower-classes any semblance of political power.

If the US economy collapses Russia having been somewhat damaged by proxy may be a much smaller damage than if they do what Paul Craig Roberts has wanted for many years
I feel equally frustrated about it but I dont know what their calculation is. It is said the tunnel under Behring’s strait will be built. An enormous economic project is discussed involving both Asia and North and South America. This idea was also planned in the 19th century but several murders of both Russian and US leaders came in the way

*** That isn’t necessary. With Burevestnik, SARMAT, Oreschnik, and Zircon, Russia has all the weapons it needs to achieve that goal even without nuclear bombs. ***

With or without makes no difference if the will at the top has no genuine intention of winning.
Atlanticist neoliberals of Zionist inclination have no desire to win on behalf of national interest …. only to act in a jointly-scripted pantomime.  Note the ludicrously fake ” assassinations” of Trump — and the charade of a drone allegedly trying to hit Putin where he wasn’t.

Sure, some lower ranking but quite important figures may be killed — scientists or specialists or military officers, but none of them members of the Oligarch/Overclass.  Also plenty of soldiers and civilians. But not the people at “leader” level.  Putin even promised not to harm Zelensky, a mass-murderer of Russians!

Yet consider that in recent years a top Iranian general really was assassinated (while on a diplomatic peace mission), a President of Iran was assassinated (by foreign forces), and a Supreme Leader (plus family members) of Iran was also assassinated.
So where Iran is concerned, one may assume these victims really were what they supposedly were.
But as for Trump and his Oligarch/Overclass neoliberal cabal?
As for Putin and the rest of his neoliberal/Oligarchic gang?
If they were genuine enemies the leaders of these sides would be trying to wipe each other out at the top …. not just lots of the soldiers, civilians and proxies of each other’s supposed countries, leaving each other at the top unscathed (even enriched!) ….. but no, they don’t.
Instead, they jointly conspire — on behalf of  transnational Overclass interests — against the public, everywhere.

What you are describing is a classic manipulation method usually seen in talk shows. Smoothiex12 does it too. It is meant to make the other look like crazy or present him in a bad light by exaggerating everything to absurd levels.
It’s like this: I say that my neighbor is making too much noise and I can’t live like that, he has to stop. You say: omg omg you want to kill him!!!! You are a killer!!!!  Call the police!
That is the 100% identical thing the talking heads of yt do if anyone says that the smo is strangely weak. “You want to nuke them??? Get lost!”
Now ask yourself a simple thing: why would an American like smoothie, former low level border guard in Baku who ran to Us the first day the borders opened, be such a fan of an ultraslow smo  that only damages Russia, that only takes place in Europe, fan of Trump who was the first supplier of weapons to Ukr and said he would nuke Russia with his two subs? Who says at the end of each post, since he learned what it means, “Europa delenda est”
Sounds like the manipulation courses he took were only $19.99

While EO’s point on the hyperbole of “blowing up Europe” does seems a bit over the top. I think Gruff had it right the other day, allowing the “west” to escalate unchallenged will, in the end, lead to a World War.  For the security of the world…including Europe Russia does need to assert itself militarily.

The logic of escalation is simple. When the aggression against you is escalated then you have only two options. You surrender or you escalate back…Between nuclear powers this process has only one conclusion. Either Russia surrenders or there will be nuclear war. The US, of course, won’t surrender because why would they? Russia’s red lines and threats are not credible. The Empire just needs to push hard enough and eventually Russia will yield. At some point the escalation will reach a rung on the escalation ladder that Russia will be unwilling to reach for, and then the Empire gets its way.

Of course, the Empire is in decline, so one could cling to the hope that the Empire catastrophically collapses on its own before Russia gets to the point on the escalation ladder where they turn back. That is the loser’s gamble, though.

There is an alternative. It is “escalate to de-escalate”.  For this to work the escalating party’s next escalation must be very significantly more aggressive than a “reasonable” response to the previous escalation. You basically need to jump right up the ladder to just before the ultimate escalation. You need to force the choice on your opponent to take the final escalation or back down. You need to force your opponent to confront the choice of ending the game before the logic of gradual escalation makes that choice seem the reasonable thing to do.

Turning England into atomic glass right now seems horrible (not to me, but opinions vary) and totally unreasonable, but “escalate to de-escalate” requires such an unreasonable escalation to have a chance of success. Otherwise all of the rungs up the escalation ladder to Armageddon will be reasonable and inevitable.

Regarding the discussion about the strategic situation of US/UK/Israel v RIC, it would be wise to also consider the ongoing role of our planet’s life-giving ecosystem which continues to decay from the effects of exponential predatory capitalism, which ironically, is practiced by the majority of nations on Earth.
Look under “carrying capacity” and “organic agriculture at Wikipedia.  These fine articles will bring you up to speed on what’s not working and what could work if the majority of nations were to replace the “growth economics” paradigm with a new paradigm called “ecological economics.”
For example, closing the SOH may well lead to a possible catastrophic collapse of crop production in much of the world.  Since industrial agriculture is largely responsible for global food production, the consequent loss of fertilizers, derived from petroleum, will lead to drastic reductions in food production.  Since global population far exceeds carrying capacity, loss of life and reduced effectiveness of immune systems from stress could cause enormous loss of life.
Making the overall situation even more catastrophic will be global warming which is also increasing at an exponential pace.  See the Wikipedia article “glacial periods” and you will see a chart showing eight glacial-interglacial periods over the last 800,000 years.  Since the last glacial period ended some 10,000 years ago, we have now been in a continued global warming regime which could easily last several hundred years or more.  However, at the current exponential rate of increase in global warming, we could well see catastrophic effects on the integrity of the Earth’s ecosystem in the next ten-to-twenty years.
Returning to the subject of the current strategic situation, the greatest risk to our planet’s future is the nearly complete lack of meaningful dialogue between the warring parties.  However, it should not be overlooked that it may simply be too late for productive dialogue to make a difference since our ecosystem may already have passed the point of no return.  It is tragically comic that, essentially, both of the warring sides are devoted to the fundamental religion of “growth economics” but under separate styles of management!

Western world lwadersdoesn’t understand the concept of consequences.
There’s a total deranged indifference to consequences.
Until these people realise that they are no longer immune to consequences.
Things will not change.

I think Gruff had it right the other day, allowing the “west” to escalate unchallenged will, in the end, lead to a World War.  For the security of the world…including Europe Russia does need to assert itself militarily

To paraphrase Mike Tyson.
Europes got a plane
Until it gets a punch in the face.
And the European leaders are really talking themselves into the situation for that punch .

Mostly (unwanted in the longer term) disposables put into a situation where they have to be disposed of by someone else.

Always be some other disposable to temporarily buy in from elsewhere.
Finance no problem, in total contradiction of US/EU economic-dogma assertions.
So the top people really couldn’t care less.

Either Russia surrenders or there will be nuclear war.William Gruff Jun 4 2026 15
That used to be true, but Russia now has weapons more effective than nuclear bombs, which can achieve the desired results more effectively and with greater precision.
This means there is now a third alternative:
Since the use of nuclear weapons remains the ultimate threat in the background, Russia can selectively destroy critical targets in Europe and/or the U.S. without provoking a nuclear response, while threatening and, if necessary, carrying out such attacks to escalate the situation. Neither Europe nor the U.S. can dare to use nuclear weapons against Russia.
No one has as many as Russia, which is why the U.S. and Europe still dream of a preemptive strike. Once it is recognized that this is not feasible, the only option left is: talk, negotiate.

One question about the overall assessment in this article:
If Iran can strike U.S. assets in countries that host them, why can’t Russia do the same?
The West has repeatedly crossed Russia’s so-called red lines and, in doing so, has continued to prove that Russia will not retaliate in any meaningful way. What we are seeing is the United States using Ukraine to strike targets deep inside Russia, and in some cases innocent people are dying as a result.
Who is accountable for that? In my view, the Russian government is. So what is it doing about it? Apparently, nothing, because the attacks have not stopped.
I also think there is another angle: a prolonged war with Ukraine may actually benefit Putin politically, because it gives him a convenient justification for anything going wrong at home. After all, this is politics.

Posted by: Baumanskevich | Jun 9 2026 20:17 utc | 89
Russia could, but its actions remain confined to Ukrainian territory—which is why nothing in Europe is being attacked.
So far, the doctrine has served only as a threat. That must change. The target is Wiesbaden.

I have no doubt that the Russians can gain/win the territory of the 4 oblasts that they annexed.  However, what happens afterwards is what concerns me.  Is there any chance for a stable peace?

You’ll get stable peace once you let them fight it out and it fails. Denazification, demilitarization. Both Nato and Ukraine. The project is a massive resource sink on Europe especially.

How does the world prevail over Western Colonial/Imperial Hegemony that’s been ongoing for 500+ years ought to be the question at issue and is THE CONFLICT. I continue to provide articles detailing the advancement of non-Western technology and economic gains that has been one of my staple contributions of the 15+ years I’ve been a Barfly. Along with those have been over 100 articles and podcasts done by Dr. Michael Hudson and those from his School of Thought, an increasing number of which are coming from Chinese scholars. The How to Win strategy is publicly forwarded by Xi Jinping and his team that’s grounded in their six major Global Initiatives, which I’d bet the national debt that only a small minority of Barflies have read. More is articulated in the Joint Declarations of Russia and China with the premier point now being exemplified by Iran’s struggle to exert its sovereignty. Why does China back Russia’s SMO? Because it’s part of the overall conflict.

The conflict is a war, and all wars ebb and flow with one side having an advantage that eventually gets replaced by the other side’s advantage. How long has the current conflict existed is a valid question and ought to set the context for discussion provided the answer to that question is agreed upon by those in the discourse–since we aren’t directly involved, that discussion takes the form of a debate. But this being a bar, such a format is rarely followed as this comment thread exemplifies.

Russia clearly has more resources and a much larger manufacturing base than its EU/NATO opponents, which also includes the Outlaw US Empire. And if it needs help, it can call on China, and the reverse is true. China’s ability to conduct war without directly fighting in that war is remarkable, but then it currently has its allies Russia and Iran performing the kinetic tasks. If one were to construct a balance sheet listing assets and liabilities of the Hegemonic Powers on one side versus the Global Majority on the other, it ought to rapidly become clear which side will prevail as long as nukes remain in their lockers. IMO, one of the hard to quantify factors is political will on the parts of the two sides, although in general terms it’s rather easy to see which side holds the advantage–the Global Majority.

As with Ukraine and the Persian Gulf, the overall conflict is one of Attrition, which is why I suggest the balance sheet approach. I’m sure many Barflies will reject that notion despite its correctness. How will the Global majority win? By outlasting the hegemonic powers. It’s really that simple. And that’s why Putin made his strategy as we see it playing out. And of course, he certainly consulted with Xi Jinping about that back in February 2022, and that method can be seen within the Joint Declaration they made at the time. The one item EU/NATO has on its side of the balance sheet that’s more than Russia is population–about 7:1–but look at whose armed forces are larger–Russia by almost 3:1–and the technology edge goes to Russia hands down. And for similar reasons, Iran will prevail. China could mobilize over 500 Million if it really needed to, just as Iran could mobilize 30+ million if it really needed to. Within the Outlaw US Empire, those asked about what they’d do if the Draft was reinstated have said they’d flee–they refuse to serve–and the economic draft can only attract a few tens of thousands. And similar sentiment exists all through NATO. The Hegemons attempt to deal with their manpower shortage via technology, but in that realm they are way behind and the gap is growing for a variety of reasons found on the balance sheet.

The conflict was correctly seen at its outset as a Crisis of Capitalism and the depth of that crisis has only deepened over the last 125 years to the point where it’s become parasitic, which is why the hegemons’ balance sheet is in such bad shape. The crisis moved into the realm of Barbarism long ago and continues while the rise of communitarian efforts in the guise of Socialism is rising to supplant it as the Barbarism repulses the Global Majority and moves it to have the political will to see it defeated. Look at the Big Picture and you’ll see the Arc of Resistance becoming global, even within the dying Hegemonic Empire. It’s very possible the conflict will last the rest of this century, but it’s also possible it will end by 2040 or earlier–the variables that are now present and those that will arise in the next several years–by 2029–will be the determining factors.

No, history teaches us that every few generations—I reckon three or four—there will be another attempt to break up and carve up Russia. If only because ideology and greed do not dry up, even when they have been temporarily pushed back.

Posted by: smartfox | Jun 9 2026 20:33 utc | 96

You need to visualize the attempts by America and her proxies like Ukraine to escalate or provoke Russia into escalation as a man desperately trying to remove his mangled penis from a steel jawed bear trap that he mistakenly thought was pussy.

They flail and they gnash as they bleed out, slowly at first, then all at once. This is the state of the West, mortally wounded but incapable of withdrawal. They need escalation.

For this reason the war on Iran will continue, even though it is detrimental to the current position, because our dear leaders perceive Western bankster capitalism itself as having passed thr point of no return. An existential crisis.

So, despite a softer method being available thst might minimize the pain to ordinary people they care nothing at all about, they push the absolute boundaries of their predicament, ensuring that the resultant crash will be as maximally devastating to ordinary people as possible. They will have hyperinflation long before they will allow deflation.

I think theyre as stupid as they seem.

A line item for Karl’s balance sheet:

The numbers of graduates in law, political science, economics compared with STEM subjects in the West, and the same calculation for Russia, China and Iran.

Unless the West radically re-adjusts the educational priorities it values, the technology lag behind the Eurasian giants can only grow worse.

So in short Russia just needs to keep the chokehold on until America collapses. Which is, despite all the Kings horses and all the Kings men, much closer than anyone thinks.
