Ukraine and World Affairs (including Iran/ME): Weekly Update, 26th June 2026: May be Useful to Some: Ukraine and World Affairs (including Iran/ME): Weekly Update Posted by: The Busker | Jun 28 2026 15:51 utc | 1 https://nypost.com/2026/06/28/world-news/iran-must-develop-nuclear-bomb-to-protect-peace-and-calm-irgc-media-says-despite-pledge-to-trump/ Posted by: Biswapriya Purkayastha | Jun 28 2026 16:00 utc | 2 The text to the link above in case it doesn’t open: Posted by: Biswapriya Purkayastha | Jun 28 2026 16:04 utc | 3 If a nuclear device cannot be used on Israel without vaporising thousands upon thousands of Palestinians and contaminating Muslim lands, then said device is useless. The chips and the capacitors have been sucked up to build the literally hundred or more mega data centres for the AI boom. Sirik was the place where the US destroyed the water supply of 20,000 people at the beginning of June. In summary, while the initial body for Gaza was authorized by the UN, its subsequent expansion into a self-governing global entity under Trump’s chairmanship has not received the same UN Security Council endorsement and remains a subject of international debate and concern. Happy with the attention, now? Posted by: Ludovico | Jun 28 2026 17:35 utc | 14 The Board of Peace has no budget, no office, no staff… it is a typical Trump muddle. Pledges of cash and manpower have not been met, and will not be met as proposed “reconstruction” in Gaza must join the queue of proposed reconstruction with Lebanon, Iran, etc. Trends suggest there is rather more deconstruction ahead. Posted by: sejmon | Jun 28 2026 18:38 utc | 19 Ayatollah Ali Khamenei gave a fatwa that WMD are haram in Islam. So it really doesn’t matter what US war porn addicts think. Posted by: Giyane | Jun 28 2026 18:47 utc | 20 The reason N Korea is left alone is not just because of nukes; it’s much more because (1) they don’t have anything easily monitizable and (2) that they don’t have an irrational modern Sparta as a near-neighbor who needs to constantly expand and fight or wither away. Posted by: Caliman | Jun 28 2026 18:48 utc | 21 Posted by: Caliman | Jun 28 2026 18:48 utc | 21 Posted by: arby | Jun 28 2026 18:57 utc | 22 The analogy with North Korea is false. In the event of an existence-threatening attack on North Korea, that state would fire its nukes at states/populations for which it feels no sympathy, if not outright hostility: Japan, the USA and its Pacific Ocean bases, even (if it feels suicidal enough), South Korea with its androgynous capitalist degenerates. Iran, on the other hand, would find nukes useful only against “Israel”, and using them would result in the deaths of thousands if not millions of Palestinians, for which Iran, alone among states in the region, seriously and actively demonstrates sympathy. If Iran were to use nukes against the USA — the only other credible target absent adoption of the “Israeli” Samson Doctrine — it would first need ICBMs capable of delivering them, and to date nobody, and certainly not Iran, has offered credible evidence that Iran has or is even developing such. Posted by: malenkov | Jun 28 2026 19:02 utc | 24 One argument against having nuclear weapons is that all the GCC countries will immediately get some, too. How many days before KSA obtains weapons from Pakistan once Iran shows they are nuclear armed? What if everyone in the region goes on a MAD shopping spree? At diplomatic levels this has been carefully thought out in consideration of neither China nor Russian wanting to trigger a race among the West Asian sultanates for nuclear weapons. This is a particularly cogent issue given the current interregnum wherein it has been shown that the US is not (as previously assumed) the ten ton gorilla who can unilaterally protect their satrapies. Iran’s diplomats are well versed in their craft and moving with expert coordination with Russia and China, never losing sight of the ultimate goal being to remove the tentacles of Uncle Sam from the middle east. Such removal will also serve to severely limit the powers of Israel to wage ruinous and unlawful wars fought with seemingly unlimited US equipment. armament and man power. Note Rubio’s grand tour of West Asia resulted in pretty much only an agreement between Aoun, Katz and himself for an “israeli ceasefire” in Lebanon, an Israeli ceasefire being one in which the oppositive side is not allowed to fire and Israel retains untrammeled opportunity for ostensibly defensive bombing of women, children and medics. Posted by: arby | Jun 28 2026 23:01 utc | 59 I volunteer the new acronymic sobriquet “Memorandum of Unstated Exceptions”, MoUE. I suggest for two reasons: a) because moue means a sad face 🙁 , and 2) because USUKrael will only and always look for exceptions in any deal, for they believe themselves to be “exceptional”. 😉 Best of luck to any and all future fools, er, sorry a bit too strong — let me say ‘hopeful souls! 😀 ‘ — trying to make contract and treaty with the West! Posted by: Nokaz | Jun 29 2026 6:22 utc | 87 Having nuclear weapons may not prevent attacks but clearly it makes enemies think twice. Perhaps that is psychological but the evidence is clear:North Korea is not attacked and has such weapons.Iran, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Palestine, Lebanon, Libya etc. etc. etc. are attacked with the goal of complete destruction and have no such weapons. All US strategic warehouses in the region are almost fully loaded and continue to be brought to their maximum capacity. Posted by: Laguerre | Jun 29 2026 7:30 utc | 92 All this talk of Iran going nuclear is not very useful, especially as the topic seems to have started from a dubious article in the NYP. Keeping aside all the other arguments, the main point to consider is that at the current juncture how will the US be forced to react to an Iranian declaration of going nuclear? It will have to double down on the sanctions, reintroduce the blockade, at the very minimum. How will this benefit Iran? As long as Iran is unable to strike the US mainland ( with conventional missiles), its ability to really deter the US, is limited. So, the current plan of going forward with a diplomatic solution with the control over Hormuz as the deterrent, is the best way forward. The recent skirmishes are nothing but the US trying to undermine Iran’s control over the Strait, and Iran asserting its right to do so.
