You’re right. That’s exactly what crude oil and gas are.
Biomass produced by photosynthesis, reduced by the temperature and pressure of deep underground into that black liquid and the gas that accompanies it.
Except that this takes thousands of years.
Humans can mimic this process in a few hours through pyrolysis.
The result isn’t guaranteed depending on the raw material used, but at least it consumes less energy than it produces.
Alternative gasoline, diesel and heating oil are already made by this process worldwide.

I’m even more concerned about the notion that some people have suggested that they might want to demonstrate it. Yes, they can carry heavy truckloads but that is not the same thing as massive earth digging and what have you.

It’s so light that not all materials can contain it, even though it’s explosive in the presence of air if it leaks.
The prime example is the fire on the German Zeppelin airship “Hindenburg” before World War II, which effectively killed this mode of transport in its early days.
But technology has improved considerably since then, and hydrogen as a fuel is being seriously considered.
The challenge remains, however, to produce it at an acceptable cost.

So I googled it, and as I already knew there is no way to extract oil from the air. There is, however, an experimental way of extracting methanol from C02 and something called “crowd oil” (a play on crude oil) which is definitely not the same as extracting oil directly from air.

Nitrogen fertilizers (not potassium or phosphate which do not rely upon fossil fuel inputs) use natural gas as a feedstock. For plastics, naptha uses oil, ethane and propane use natural gas. The vast, vast majority of natural gas is delivered by pipeline, while LNG only provides about 13% of global supplies. The world has an excess of NG, and an ongoing massive overbuild of LNG facilities. The Gulf is only 20% of LNG, thats only 2.6% of global NG supply. NG is being displaced from space heating through the adoption of heat pumps, in electricity production by renewables, and in transportation by EVs. NG and coal can also be used to produce naptha, and the world is over-supplied with coal (with much of it mined in the same countries that it is used in). China has abundant coal, and is also quite rapidly increasing its gas production as well as having access to pipeline gas from Russia and Central Asia and access to fertilizer and plastics feedstock production from Russia.
Only 40% of oil consumption is used in petrochemicals and other industrial uses, the rest is used in the transport sector. The move to EVs is rapidly accelerating outside the US, with the transport usage of oil set to fall significantly in the next 5-10 years. Spreading from buses and light vehicles to the trucking sector and even shipping. In addition, industrial uses in mining and construction etc. are seeing diesel increasingly replaced with electricity. Trains, subways and trams are already heavily electrified and becoming more so.
So fnord is right, “fossil fuel dominance” is fighting the last war. And the Middle East will become less and less important to the world. The US fossil fuel oligarch class fraction is using its political and state courtiers in an attempt to hold back the inevitable. The real energy superpower is China, an energy TECHNOLOGY superpower.

This number is simply coal’s share of electricity generation. It is not a plummetting reduction in overall coal use.

The largest components of electric vehicles and electric almost anything are steel and plastic by volume.
Steel and plastic depend on fossil fuels for their production. Plastic is over ninety-nine percent derived from oil and gas the world over including China.
Steel cannot be made without the energy density fossil fuels provide in order to achieve the high temps required for the process.
Even if you achieve steel production by electricity at the scale necessary for civilization you are nevertheless still left with the quandry of producing the electricty which doesn’t grow on trees and which will be required in ever greater volumes.
You cannot make steel with electricity generated by solar panels nor even by wind or water for that matter.

Actually, while nuclear power is used in China to make ‘clean hydrogen’ for hydrogen-based direct reduced iron (DRI) production, the actual smelting process itself still requires massive amounts of largely coal-produced energy.
China itself boasts much more of reducing ‘carbon emissions’ and meeting ‘carbon goals’ rather than boasting about actually using less resources.

In among this schizophrenic on-again, off-again “peace deal”, this doesn’t sound anything like a “peace deal”. It’s supposedly a Memorandum Of Understanding, a framework for later talks. It sounds like a way for the US to string things along into the future with no guarantees of anything, no timeline, no ways to hold anyone accountable for anything, no parameters. It sounds like a way for the US to continue the war, continue the blockade, continue the economic warfare, continue the “defensive strikes to bring Iran back to the table”, continue the propaganda, continue the regime change operations and to hold Iran’s feet to the fire if they don’t pony up everything that the US intends to take from them.
That is exactly what the “ceasefire” “agreement” turned out to achieve. This is just more of the same perfidious lies, eroding Iran’s strength – its people’s trust – allowing time for the economic constraints and sanctions to further degrade their economy while the US sits and threatens and sits some more promising peace and then threatening again.

Liquid hydrogen is not “heavy”(high density) it is very low density, and liquid hydrogen has one quarter the volumetric energy density of aviation kerosene(or any kerosene for that matter). Hydrogen is thus useless powering commercial aircraft, as well as for the other obvious reasons.

Nobody ever said hydrogen or liquid hydrogen are “heavy” – What was said was that the storage system needed for sufficient hydrogen to use in aircraft would add too much weight to be feasible. It has a much lower energy density than typical fossil fuels, meaning aircraft powered by it instead would actually weigh more.
Anyway there are other reasons why hydrogen is not a viable aviation fuel at this time.

The majority feed for plastics is oil, but can also be replaced with natural gas. The latter is very cheap in the US and thats why it predominates there. Out of 105 mbpd of global consumption about 16 mbpd is for plastic feedstock and other petrochemical products. 57 is for diesel, gasoline and heating oil. 6 mbpd for shipping and heavy industry fuel, 8 mbpd for jet fuel, and also additional amounts for LPG for heating and cooking etc.
Oil is not going to go away anytime soon, but the amount used is going to shrink significantly over the next 5-10 years. Very substantially impacting the Middle Eastern exporting nations, exports from which account for about 31 mbpd per year. Countries will tend to favour domestic production and supplies from near countries/friendly countries (e.g. Central Asia and Russia for China, North Africa, Azerbaijan and Norway for Europe) after it has been displayed how easily the Strait of Hormuz can be blocked.
