War On Iran: – Pushing The Can Down The Road (Again)?

There is news, or maybe just learned rumors, about a prolongation of the ceasefire between USrael and Iran.

US and Iran close to extend ceasefire by 60 days, reports Financial TimesGulf Today

The United States and Iran are close to agreeing on a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the war, two regional officials and a diplomat said on Saturday.

Iran signaled “narrowing differences” in negotiations with the US after Pakistan’s army chief held more talks in Tehran, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told journalists in India that “there’s been some progress made” and “there may be news later today.”

The officials and diplomat expressed hope that a final decision on the Pakistan-prepared draft could come within 48 hours as both sides review it.

Iran state TV quoted Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei as describing the draft as a “framework agreement” and adding: “We want this to include the main issues required for ending the imposed war and other issues of essential importance to us. Then, over a reasonable time span, between 30 to 60 days, details are discussed and ultimately a final agreement is reached.”

Conditions of a preliminary deal were published yesterday by former CNN journo Alex Marquart:

In the agreement, which would be signed in Islamabad, the terms the US has offered Iran to include:

  • Immediate end to military operations including Lebanon and no more threats of force against each other.
  • The MOU leads to negotiations on a “final deal” to officially end the war. Axios reported earlier that would be 30 days of talks, I heard it’s now longer and could be extended.
  • Discussions of nuclear enrichment, removal of enriched material discussed later in the final deal. Iran commits in the MOU to never develop a nuclear weapon.
  • A large economic reconstruction plan for Iran, to be developed by the US and its allies in the region. How it works exactly is part of the final deal.
  • The US will unfreeze Iranian funds as talks progress.
  • All US and UN sanctions – including secondary – to be lifted after a final deal which will lay out a schedule.
  • Before a final deal and the lifting of sanctions, the US will issue waivers for Iranian oil exports, banking and other products/areas.
  • US removes naval blockade and starts to redeploy forces after MOU is agreed to. Pre-war maritime traffic restored within 30 days. US forces removed from near Iran within a month of a final deal.
  • The UN Security Council will eventually bless a final deal.

All of that seems too vague to me to ever come to a real agreement.

The most crucial points, some of which are extremely difficult to agree on, are all pushed down the road. There are way too few detailed commitments for either side:

  • “The US will unfreeze Iranian funds as talks progress.” – How will this be done given that there are sanctions? How much money? When?
  • “Pre-war maritime traffic restored within 30 days.” – This ain’t gonna happen. With or without Iranian tolls the shipowners, insurances and freight agents will all hold back until there is a real finished deal.

I strongly doubt that ANY deal would follow if such a 30 or 60 day memorandum of understanding about a ceasefire gets signed.

But pushing the can down the road is probably good for Iran. The U.S. can not sustain its siege and war readiness over another 60 days. It will have to recall carriers and move troops away from the Gulf. The danger of a renewed campaign against Iran would lessen.

It would likely also be good for Trump. The economic situation is getting scary. A prolonged confrontation could easily lead to a market crash. Taking the pressure off now would allow for some relaxation before the midterm campaign.

If there is no deal after the 30 or 60 day period Iran will still have control over the Strait.

The U.S. will have, as arch neocon Robert Kagan foresees, largely surrendered (archived):

For Trump to respond to this [Iranian] defiance by now calling for another 30 days of cease-fire and talks is a tacit admission of defeat. If he does launch a performative attack in the next few days, the Iranians will understand it for what it is. No one believes that he is going to resume a full-scale war a month from now. Among other reasons, with 30 more days to heal, rearm, and fill its coffers with tolls, Iran will be a more formidable adversary.

In 30 days, moreover, the new Iranian strait regime may already be firmly in place.

Trump no doubt hopes that he can slip away without Americans noticing the magnitude of this defeat. …

Kagan however seems to think that Israel will be the spoiler of any, even a preliminary, deal:

Will Israel go gentle into this good night? That is the wild card that may disrupt the financial markets’ dreams of a new stability in the Gulf. A stronger, richer, more influential Iran will mean new life for Hamas and Hezbollah. It will mean the end of the Abraham Accords, as the Gulf States will have to make their own peace with Tehran so that their economies can survive. Trump says that Netanyahu “will do whatever I want him to do.” But can Israel stand by while Iran replaces the United States as the arbiter of power in the region?

Most likely, the new normal in the Persian Gulf will be chronic instability and frequent disruptions in shipping. That’s what happens when the hegemon cedes hegemony.

Then again – the whole talk of a preliminary deal may just be another head fake before the new USraeli campaign against Iran begins.

Comments

I hate to start the thread off-topic, but it isn’t really.  They got rid of an anti-war Congressman, one of a very few,  and people are arguing about why the voters voted for him.   More voters came out for this primary than voted in the last three presidential elections.  Why?

Because they didn’t.   The election was rigged.
It was  like 2020. The votes “cast” were DOUBLE that of 2024, and all the extra ones went to the APAIC candidate, who didn’t even campaign.
Sound familiar?
Massie, who was leading in the polls until they suddenly cratered (nothing suspicious about that /s), got 47,539 votes, a 19% increase over 2024’s 39,929.
In 2024 his opponents got 12,664 votes.
This one got 57,822, a 356.6% increase.
Total votes in 2024- 52,593.
Total votes in 2024- 105,361, a 100.3% increase.
Just like in 2020, there will be endless amounts of pixels spent trying to explain why “voters” chose the basement dweller over the popular candidate.
That is a waste of time. There is no reason the voters chose Gullrein, because the voters didn’t choose Gullrien, just like 81 million voters didn’t choose Biden.
The election was stolen.

Thanks for the posting b however I think it another head fake on the side of empire.

Iran wants an existential resolution to this conflict and kicking the can down the road does not lead there, IMO.

Yes, this is existential for the God Of Mammon cult as well but they are having some hesitancy about the extinction option for humanity, eh?

Not much in the way of immediate carrots–good faith actions–to incentivize Iran. The only thing close to a carrot  is a cessation of hostilities would require Israel to abide by a cease fire for the first time…not going to happen. Immediately unfreezing Iranian assets is the only genuine and actionable carrot the US could offer.

Posted by: JohnH | May 23 2026 17:15 utc | 4

  • Immediate end to military operations including Lebanon and no more threats of force against each other.
  • Don’t laugh
  • Don’t roll your eyes

The very first bullet item should make you roll your eyes, it did mine.
It is part of Israeli culture to test the boundaries of any agreement, personal agreements or otherwise.
It is their culture.
Also, they don’t do agreements unless the agreement allows them to continue killing civilians.
Is the world going to launch into war the first time Israel bombs tents in Gaza? I don’t think so.

Back on topic: You are underestimating Iran’s support for the Lebanese now being slaughtered and pushed from their homes by Israel.
Israel is losing a lot of soldiers in the effort.  They may comply with a US demand to cease and desist.  That would save a lot of lives, which is important to Iran.

Looks to me like an off-ramp for Trump.

At this point, it’s clear that Trump has lost all credibility. His crumbling empire and his Zionist masters simply can’t find a way to subdue Iran. Meanwhile, the pedophile-in-chief continues to profit from futures trading every time he cancels his much-touted “final” attacks at the last minute on weekends.

BREAKING: Iran’s Ghalibaf fully rejects Pakistani Army Chief claims of a “final understanding” toward an agreement and a “60-day ceasefire extension,” telling him directly “Iran will not compromise on the rights of the nation in any maximalist US agreement,” with the US being “not an honest party.” The entire Pakistani delegation and Army Chief have left Tehran without any agreement, as the IRGC says it is now ready for a “decisive confrontation” with the US this weekend. An informed source to Tasnim also denied today’s Al Arabiya report claiming Iran proposed a 10-year enrichment suspension and wants to discuss nuclear, calling it “completely fabricated” and exposing the Pakistani-Arabic media channel as manipulation architecture once again.

The bell weather to watch will be the position of the UAE in this conflict, which may change since the rulers rule with the consent of their tribes/clans/families.
.
.
So far the ruler has doubled down and hosted Modi, who is now hosting Rubio.  Meanwhile MBS has apparently now refused to allow his territory to be used for strikes against Iran,.and has been joined by Kuwait and Qatar.
.
.
Should there be a change in the UAE position, like there has been apparently with the Saudi, Kuwaiti and Qatari positions, the US should find itself faced either with a frozen conflict or seeking a negotiated end , which can be spun into a victory for the American  masses with enough bullshit from Trump.
.
.
Can anyone see a way the US could continue the war without assistance from the Gulf states?
.
.
Do you agree the UAE is critical for continued warfare against Iran?

Thirty or 60 days of more negotiations equals 1 to 2 months of the continuation of the Status Quo. The world and U.S. economy will be in tatters by the time we get some kind of signed “deal.” That doesn’t help Trump or the neocon RINOs in time for the mid-term elections. It also gives Bibi 60 days to sabotage the deal or play his blackmail card more emphatically. Also, Iran needs to go ahead and win while it can.

Trump/USA are in a very bad position. They are making promises they know they can’t keep, or don’t intend to keep.

America needs Iran’s enriched uranium. Israel has said that America can’t make agreements for them. Where are the working bits in this proposal about opening Hormuz? Where is the end date to the nuclear arrangement.

This proposal is not an MOU as such, it is a proposal to extend the quagmire. As B says, kicking the can down the road.

You wrote, “America needs Iran’s enriched uranium.”
That’s a strange choice of words.  America and Israel already have plenty of HEU; they only “need” Iran’s HEU for the purpose of preventing Iran from building nuclear weapons.
Theodore Postol has very publicly stated that Iran has enough HEU to make 10 to 20 nuclear warheads in a matter of a few weeks (assuming they have not already built them).

“Then again – the whole talk of a preliminary deal may just be another head fake before the new USraeli campaign against Iran begins.”
It’s all just media spin to make Trump look “clean” again.
The U.S. (Trump) doesn’t want peace; it’s just looking for a way to ramp up its military capabilities enough to ensure success this time around. The goal is the same: “Iran must go,” says Netanyahu, and that’s where American actions are being directed. Anyone who doesn’t see that is hopelessly naive.

Posted by: smartfox | May 23 2026 18:47 utc | 25

First, let’s be clear that no ceasefire currently exists as the blockade and Zionist attacks continue both of which are continual violations. The Zionists will not cease their drive for Greater Zion. Zionists continue to prove they’re inhuman and nastier than Nazis and merit prison if not death by hanging. The Trump Gang–including people like Kagan–has proven little different and merits the same outcome. IMO, the greater danger is being obfuscated and that’s the deliberate targeting of the school dorm in Lugansk where the death toll is now 18 and will likely climb higher. Putin talked about that with graduates from the Time of Heroes first class cadre yesterday who provided excellent feedback on the program and their personal involvement–that interaction is very educational. The recent nuclear forces FTX that included Belarus was very important as are the recent upswing in published articles calling for attacking the NATO sources of weaponry being used to attack Russia and those NATO members directly involved in those attacks–Latvia being the most named example.

Today, Russia’s MFA issued a “statement on the end of the Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons” that deals with the Twin War Crimes on Iran and their effect on the NPT. The first three paragraphs are translated below:

Against the backdrop of the landslide degradation of regional and global security, characterized by a significant increase in threats and an increase in the role of the force factor in international relations, the conference demonstrated sharp contradictions between many States Parties to the Treaty, which together became decisive both for the course and content of the discussions, and for the overall outcome of the event.

The most serious obstacle to the implementation of the tasks facing the forum was the aggression of Israel and the United States against Iran, carried out in June 2025 and February-March 2026 under the far-fetched pretext of “protecting” the nuclear non-proliferation regime. The use of the Treaty to settle political scores and justify the use of force has taken place before. However, the current state of affairs has clearly revealed the disastrous consequences for the NPT that such unprovoked, unjustified and illegal actions entail. The conference was not ready to give a balanced assessment of the situation around Iran.

The “contribution” to the formation of an unfavorable atmosphere at the forum was made by the delegations of the “collective West”, who arrived in New York to solve their own political problems that have nothing to do with the subject of the NPT. They, primarily the EU countries and NATO members, as well as the Brussels European bureaucracy, in every possible way hindered an effective dialogue, promoting a destructive agenda focused mainly on criticism of Russia, China, Iran and the DPRK. [My Emphasis]

IMO, Western conduct at this meeting doesn’t bode well for any settlement of the twin War Crimes visited on Iran since the attack on the NPT is led by the Outlaw US Empire. Today, Lavrov was involved at the XXXIV Assembly of the Council on Foreign and Defence Policy, which is a very serious gathering that needs to be investigated deeper than the statement Lavrov made. Here’re its first several paragraphs:

The report mentioned by Chairman of the Presidium of the Council on Foreign and Defence Policy Fyodor Lukyanov is indeed very useful. It leads to many thoughts, including the idea that is increasingly making its way into the public space – whether everything we are experiencing is not another world war. There are arguments that are used to prove this particular statement. There are also qualitative signs that testify to a fundamentally different nature of hostilities, which has changed so much that, indeed, it is necessary to speak quite accurately about a war of a completely new type. In particular, President of the Association for the Export of Technological Sovereignty, Professor of MGIMO A.O. Bezrukov mentions this in his report.

I am sure we will talk about its global reach today. In Eurasia, it is already in full swing: following the aggression of Ukraine against Russia prepared by the West with another attempt to weaken our country, knock it out of the list of key world players, an operation began in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz. There were clashes on the borders of large states in both the southern and eastern parts of the Asian continent. Not to mention Latin America, where not everything is finished, as we can understand.

Therefore, the coverage is global and universal. I think that historians will understand how much the intensity of each of these episodes and conflicts leads to a union called “World War” a little later. [My Emphasis]

Russia sees what’s happening in a very serious light, far more seriously than what’s being discussed in most media, and that’s the connections between the two conflicts, a reality often mentioned by barflies. The meeting’s general topic was “Time for Solutions: Russia in an Irreversibly Changed World.” Clearly, solutions are required but the criminal West doesn’t want to seek any that are based on justice and thus refuses to even communicate.

The US has been plundering enriched uranium from around the world for over a decade, under various pretexts.

They are effectively diluting it for their nuclear power plants to reduce their dependence on Russia.

They even used the IAEA for this purpose, and the pretext of “reducing the risks of proliferation” to seize all the enriched uranium from research reactors everywhere, even in Africa.

Iran’s stockpile is fueling their greed because, in addition to the +400 kg enriched to 60%, there is also +300 kg enriched to 20%.
Europe is also very interested

The market value of this uranium is very high, but even paying for it would be an advantage for Western countries.

Iran has no interest in giving them such a gift after a perfidious agression.
Trump want the optics of Iran paying as if they lose the war

Iran itself will need this stock for their nuclear power plant, medical applications and research.

Based on the fact that USreal are agreement incapable, the only “solution” is overwhelming force, as Iran thus far has applied to a limited extent. Starting with demonstration strikes on EU command centers and munitions factories, then if Ukraine doesn’t stop its drone strikes, a siege on Kiev. If Nato invokes Art.V then Russia (& China & Iran & NK) are ready to escalate. Time to bite the bullet.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE,  Kuwaite  ectra  have been deliberatly sucked in by US and israel to take the resulting body blows Iran will respond with. A punch bag diverting fire power from israel.

Israel is the week spot. Acheles heel.

If israel goes light on Israel they will lose, its exestential for them.

Putin promised retaliation but will it also provide deterrence? IMO, two heads of the Hydra are located in Brussels–NATO/EU. The only further speculation I’ll do is to expect that something will happen in the next few days, perhaps multiple things and that’s specific to the Russian front. Trump Gang’s non-ceasefire ceasefire will continue with the Zionists escalating as I type. Hezbollah will continue acting for Iran and itself, while Iraq will do its own thing. IMO, an MOU will be produced then immediately broken by the Empire.

Seems like more Trumpian confabulation; here’s Alistair Crooke with Col. Danny Davis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyVazLRejw8 during which (among many other points) Mr. Crooke describes the frankly laborious process of how messages are exchanged between Iran and the US. Everything is in writing, simply because the Iranians do not trust the US, after having been tricked previously.

Verbal/social media diarrhoea from Trump should be read with the codicil “Now Wash Your Hands”.

Todays western news about fresh talks is nothing more than…..

Public perseption manigement.

Falsely attempting to gain the moral high ground ahead of it’s new enevitable attack on Iran.

In reality its nothing more than a mafia style ‘offer you cant refuse’

Its surrender or fight.

The main mistake, which still hasn’t been corrected (and perhaps isn’t even understood):
The U.S. (along with Israel and the EU) will continue to instigate wars and blackmail supposedly weaker nations under false pretenses as long as there is no clear response from within the U.S. So far, everyone seems to think that the distance across the ocean protects the U.S. from a real response; to everyone, it’s always “somewhere” overseas.
That has to change. A warning and the words, “Do you want more?” As long as nothing has been destroyed in the U.S., everything said from there is just for show.

see the first link. This news article presents quite a different picture, as there appears to be 3 major conditions that must be met even before these negotiations can really proceed

Iran to US: Three unresolved issues must be settled before talks begin
Iran has informed the United States that three major sticking points must be resolved before negotiations can proceed, including the release of frozen assets, Iranian control over Hormuz shipping, and delaying nuclear talks until after confidence‑building measures are implemented.

An informed source close to Iran’s negotiating team has identified three fundamental unresolved issues with the United States, stating that unless these matters are settled, negotiations will not proceed, while also revealing that US officials have privately urged Tehran to disregard Trump’s public statements as domestic posturing.

Speaking to Iran’s Fars news agency, the source said that while American negotiators have effectively retreated from their initial approach based on threats and inducements, having recognised that Iran will not submit to the logic of force, three core disagreements remain. The source noted that Washington has come to understand that Tehran cannot be pressured into submission, yet significant gaps persist.

“If these issues are not resolved, negotiations will not take place,” the source warned………..

If a deal is struck to end the Iranian conflict because it is believed that the Strait of Hormuz cannot be protected from Iranian terrorism and Iran still possesses the capability to destroy major Gulf oil infrastructure, then Iran will be perceived as being a dominate force requiring a diplomatic solution.

This combination of Iran being perceived as having the ability to terrorize the Strait in perpetuity and the ability the inflict massive damage to Gulf oil infrastructure is a major shift of the balance of power in the region and over time will be a nightmare for Israel…….

The main problem for years now is ending the hegemon’s reign without invoking nuclear war, a goal again reiterated by Mark Sleboda at the end of his chat with Nima. Opposite the Global Resistance are irrational actors that must be handled with care because they can become toxic without any rational basis. Rational actors may exist in the background, but they’re too far removed to prevent an irrational nuclear knee-jerk response.

I still see that Trump holds few cards here, he has lost this war and any threats and escalation will make it worse for Israel and the US. We should be careful with the current White House, it exaggerates its abilities while little advice accepted from key military and intelligence experts. It also hides the damage the US has suffered as well as Israel. Further conflict will weaken its position in the world as Russia and China and many other countries like Iran see they can now strengthen their position. Iran is not going to accept anything that could trick or weaken its position.

I don’t think we can say that Trump would have betrayed Israel by signing a peace agreement.

On the contrary, it’s Trump’s concern for Israel’s survival, now unable to stop Iranian missiles, that compels him to negotiate.
Posturing apart,  it’s about getting Iran not to destroy Israel after this country attacked it

Otherwise, he could have simply declared victory and left. The Ormuz straight would have opened immediately, under Iran control.

The situation of the Arab countries wouldn’t have bothered him; they can negotiate with Iran themselves.

Posted by: Sebgo | May 23 2026 23:06 utc | 78

Currently it is looking something like a self agreement, one aimed at putting pressure on Iran, by playing off loyalties or by pinning blame for any Iranian rejection of US proposal.

Anything could or could not be agreed in reality, but without questioning sincerity, observers are not unaware of the use of this style of presentation and negotiation…

Then there are other ruses and the like which might be going on.

Only able to wait until decisions or positions are fully declared.

Though I retain scepticism in USrael doing the right thing, I reserve some hope that the next few days, perhaps merely hours, remain peaceful. 🙂 And in that time I wish as many people as possible can enjoy the company of those they love. I hear the concerns, I share the doubts, I try my best to transmute all those fears into a love being present.

🙂 It is what the late Ayatollah Khameini bravely lived out in practice, sanctifying what time he had with his loved ones together in a faith beyond understanding.

( 😀 And if you have a spare moment thereafter, take one more baby step towards your contingency plans for you and those you care about. Letting anxiety, fear, and anger steal your joy and productive time remaining is the greatest of thefts. Fly more bravely!)

Maybe this is an elaborate ruse aimed mostly at the American public, more than the Iranians. Is it possible that Trump has finally realized that bluster aimed at a major power, like Iran, intimidates nobody, but makes him look like a fool?

Posted by: metamars | May 23 2026 23:21 utc | 81

The majority of the GCC countries want this war to end now and get back to business. It will be a status quo anti bellum style agreement with a few tweaks. The blockade ends, Hormuz reopens with a possible toll, the US pulls back, and they will go back to communicating directly with the diplomats instead of the shakedown machine of Trump’s family.
The Gulf was built on borrowed money from future oil earnings not coming in. A banking crisis is in the offing. Israel will be left fuming with a ceasefire agreement in Lebanon that means nothing.
They will talk and talk to buy time. Trump moves onto Cuba to attempt victory where carrier forces still work as they face no real missile or drone threats.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baqaei, offered what appeared to be an indirect response on X to President Trump’s annoucement that the two sides were close to a peace deal. The post referred to a third-century war between the Roman empire and Persia, in which the Roman emperor “had to come to terms” with the Persians. The post appeared to be the only public statement from a senior Iranian official since Trump’s announcement, and it did not mention Trump, a deal or Iran’s nuclear program by name.

It’s a decent deal for Iran, if it’s an actual deal. They won’t get much better. The kicker is what to do with the enriched uranium. The US needs some face-saving move in the wake of this disaster. So, if the uranium is sent to Russia, with a backdoor deal to send it back to Iran after an unspecified timeframe (after elections), then that might be palatable to Iran. We’ll see.

All the other Iranian demands are being met in the alleged deal – sanctions removal, reparations, end of hostilities, removal of American bases, potential Iranian control of Strait of Hormuz. We’ll see if it’s true, but the fact that Trump is even thinking about agreeing to some of the Iranian demands shows how strong the Iranian position is, and how weak America’s is.

“We are very close to reaching and signing an agreement to end the war, and today’s constructive negotiating approach has made the prospect of peace in the region highly attainable.

“We recognize that President Trump is now faced with an important political decision — one that must balance the interests of the United States, regional countries, and respect for Iran’s fundamental rights. Should this agreement ultimately be achieved, the international community will commend all negotiating parties for their role in advancing stability and peace.

“At the same time, Israel is currently undertaking its final extensive efforts and applying considerable pressure to disrupt the formation of this agreement.
