War On Iran: – Destroyer Battle – Iran Can Sustain – Losers Hold Cards

The current situation around the Strait of Hormuz is vague. We currently have what Chas Freeman calls (vid) a “ceasefire with Israeli characteristics”. Both sides continue to fight but try to avoid a larger escalation.

Yesterday the U.S. stopped an empty Iranian tanker coming from the Indian Ocean which was heading towards an Iranian port. Iran responded by attacking three U.S. destroyer which seem to have intended to pass, east to west, through the Strait of Hormuz into the Persian Gulf.

The destroyers were driven off under intense Iranian fire:

American officials described the Iranian onslaught on three destroyers as fiercer and more sustained than a separate Iranian barrage that two of the warships faced only days earlier.

The vessels came under an intense Iranian assault as swarms of Iranian fast-attack boats maneuvered close enough that American warships opened fire to keep them at bay, U.S. officials told CBS News under condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Over several hours, the American warships and supporting aircraft mounted a layered defense, firing their five-inch naval guns and their close-in weapon systems known as CIWS, officials said. Small-caliber gun teams on deck also engaged the attacking boats. American Apache helicopters fired Hellfire missiles, and .50-caliber machine guns were fired from the decks of the ships, as additional aircraft provided support overhead.

Iranian forces also launched drones and missiles during the confrontation, the officials said. As of publication, no casualties or damage to the ships was reported.

(If you believe that last sentence please check out my offer of bridges for sale.)

The Iranian navy was clearly close enough to the destroyers to sink them. That it did not do so might well be a sign that it currently does not want to escalate.

After the attempt to seize Iran’s Uranium had failed with more than ten airplanes and helicopters lost in desert and after the failure of “Project Freedom” earlier this week this was the third tactical military operation attempt by the U.S. in which the Iranian side prevailed.

It confirms the recent ‘leaked’ assessment by the U.S. intelligence community that Iran can sustain this conflict (archived) and has sufficient reserves for many months, if not years, of continuous fighting:

A confidential CIA analysis delivered to administration policymakers this week concludes that Iran can survive the U.S. naval blockade for at least three to four months before facing more severe economic hardship, four people familiar with the document said, a finding that appears to raise new questions about President Donald Trump’s optimism on ending the war.

Iran retains about 75 percent of its prewar inventories of mobile launchers and about 70 percent of its prewar stockpiles of missiles, a U.S. official said. The official said there is evidence that the regime has been able to recover and reopen almost all of its underground storage facilities, repair some damaged missiles and even assemble some new missiles that were nearly complete when the war began.

The assessment confirms the conclusion that Iran has -so far- won this war:

“What started as a war supposedly aimed at toppling the regime and dismantling its nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities,” [Israeli analyst] Citrinowicz posted Wednesday on X, “may instead leave Iran’s regime stronger than before — empowered by sanctions relief, still retaining significant missile capabilities, continuing support for its proxies, and almost certainly preserving uranium enrichment on its own soil.”

The U.S. can not agree to that but it also does not have any reasonable ways or means to avoid that outcome.

Time is on the Iranian side. Its economy is used to work under sanctions and pressure. The U.S. (and global) economy can not do without the oil, gas, fertilizer and minerals which are currently blocked in the Persian Gulf. The U.S. can not win militarily. It is losing economically.

All the White House may still be able to do now is to make peace with Iran (i.e. conceding defeat) while selling that a victorious outcome.

On May 4th The White House twitter account posted this picture:

bigger
Trump had tweeted a montage of himself in which he is shown holding UNO game cards with the text proudly proclaiming that he has “all the cards”.

The picture is a prefect example of the mental inabilities of the current White House inhabitant and his staff.

UNO is a shedding game:

.. players start with a hand of cards, and the object of the game is to be the first player to discard all cards from one’s hand.

Trump may well have all the cards. But the winner of the game is the first player who has left none. Those still holding UNO cards are losers.

Posting that picture may well have been an unconsciousness admission by Trump that he had lost the game to Iran.

So what’s next?

“Brzezinski’s 2016 advice to bring Russia-China-Iran in from out of the cold was the smart path to follow. It still is. It is THE ONLY way to save the world economy from splitting more and more in ways that adversely affects America more and more and by extension the rest of the world whose economies are tied to America:
Toward a Global Realignment by ZBIGNIEW BRZEZINSKI

Given all this, a long and painful road toward an initially limited regional accommodation is the only viable option for the United States, Russia, China, and the pertinent Middle Eastern entities. For the United States, that will require patient persistence in forging cooperative relationships with some new partners (particularly Russia and China) as well as joint efforts with more established and historically rooted Muslim states (Turkey, Iran, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia if it can detach its foreign policy from Wahhabi extremism) in shaping a wider framework of regional stability. Our European allies, previously dominant in the region, can still be helpful in that regard.

The current leaders of both American establishment cliques need to accept that their strategy is outdated and self-defeating — and dangerous. It threatens the lives of so many on a daily basis around the world, including Americans. The rise of China and Russia has made a unipolar world impossible unless the Chinese all of a sudden decide to submit to the LIO. And that is what the American establishment seems to think they can force on them. They hope to wait out Putin to change Russia when he is gone. While that may be possible, what they hope with China is extremely unlikely. China is aggressively courting other nations for partnerships while America is losing more and more respect among the people and leaders of the world.”From War of the Worlds: The New Class

Not sure what to make of the initial phrasing here: amplifying the idea that USA is ordered around by Israel, if nothing else.
At Israel’s request, the United States has asked Turkey to prevent 60 vessels from departing from Turkey for the Global Sumud Flotilla’s next voyage toward Gaza, Israel’s Ynet reported on Friday. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has personally conveyed the message to Turkish officials, the report says.

As long as the US isnt attacked on its own territory it seems to me the US planning is successful. Iran survives but Asia will have to buy expensive US LNG and its petro LNG dollar will remain viable. Europe will fall apart both from war and foolish policies. Kina and Russia may have their reasons for being so tolerant. I dont dispute that but I think it is difficult to defeat a rogue operator unless one lets it taste its own medicine. WW3 is ongoing but the US is able to attack Russia and presumably not before long China. Will the US maintain its refinaries unharmed while constantly harming Russias and removing alternatives for China?

Amb. Chas Freeman: Israel’s Agenda Is Falling Apart

# On the Gulf – The Hegemon is flailing … its geopolitical heft in the region is declining by the hour

# On the UAE/Zionist alliance: there is no way that IRI & KSA will tolerate Zionists camped in the Gulf. This is the next war … noting that the UAE has very strong financial interests in the US and one of the best, and best financed, lobbying groups in DC.

“Ceasefire with Israeli (now U$$A) characteristics” is a money quote.

This war of choice boils down to:  if IDF and U$$A does not stop the genocide and fake ceasefire the world will pay with the kind of horrors Gaza, Lebanon and Iran have endured from U$$A proxy in Tel Aviv.

The price to avoid world wide depression is disarm IDF and pullU$$A out of Eurasia.

>The Iranian navy was clearly close enough to the destroyers to sink them. That it did not do so might well be a sign that it currently does not want to escalate.

According to b, Iran is simultaneously causing damage and casualties on American DD’s,  but also has no intention to actually sink any American ships, because…. because they haven’t sunk any American ships. In the real world, Iran has not even hit an American warship, though Iran lies about this daily. Meanwhile, the US continues sinking Iran’s pitiful collection of rowboats at will.

At this point, I have real doubts b’s sincerity and intellectual honesty. The things he writes have gotten so absurd it would be discrediting if he actually believes them. Is it  hard to deal with the cognitive dissonance, after all the “come closer” bragging, that Iran is still helpless against the USN even in the strait itself?

The Resistance Fights On as the Cowardly Crusaders Flounder

“…In Palestine…in Lebanon…and in Iran, Team Israel/USA is the aggressor, and it’s floundering in all three conflicts. With treachery in negotiations and extravagant use of bombardment having failed to help them achieve their goals, Tel Aviv and Warshington have resolved to just stamping their feet and demanding that Iran, Lebanon and the Palestinians all surrender unconditionally. None of the three will surrender, of course.

At one point in this terrible saga, Abu Obeida, spokesperson for the Ali-Qassam Brigades, offered this pithy response to such demands: ‘What the enemy failed to take from us through tanks and war, it will not be able to take through politics at the negotiating table.’

Team Israel/USA, now a military failure three times over, is still capable of doing grievous damage in West Asia and beyond for a while longer. But the era of US global dominance is fading fast, thanks in good part to the valiant, steadfast people of Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon [,Yemen], and Iran.”

If you mean I am letting out dangerous thoughts I respect you for expressing worries. I dont take it lightly but the US is a very mean operator. It is indeed rogue. For how long is it reasonable that one side breaks all the rules while the other side leaves the rogue side unharmed? It already is WW3. Sometimes human logic doesnt suffice.

Assuming the auto .50s are being fired at lightly armored boats using a mix of HEI and APIT rounds I’d say they’d be a significant threat out to two miles in conditions of good visibility absent gusty winds.  With standard ball rounds maybe half a mile, somewhat more with a skilled gunner.

You should prepare yourself for the “Federal Reserve System” of privileged debt used as currency to come to an end. (This debt is issued by many other countries “central banks” and will NOT be a US phenomenon but global breakdown of trust in counterparty risk)

There is the old school “hard money” (Gold) group.
There is the new “privileged debt as currency” group.
There is a middle of the road practice where the “privileged” part of “privileged debt as currency” is eliminated and no “bank” can ever issue debt but the Government issues the debt instead.

I expect after the failure in the privileged debt as currency the next system will be the Government issued debt as currency system will be implemented (especially making use of open source AI management)

Best wishes in the forthcoming trials and tribulation, but the light at the end of the tunnel is bright indeed

More immediately, you should expect “political Zionism” and “political Islam” to “mutually destroy each other” exactly as foretold by Albert Pike some 170 years ago. Maybe no gas or diesel or supermarket food for between 6 weeks and 6 years, depending on how responsive the public manages to be.

It can’t be in Iran’s interest to sink any ships at this level of war. Make them run to repairs, reveal the lies later for bigger impact. Trump wants to trick the markets with his daily posts, he’s the ultimate scammer Ukr should learn from.
The opposite is true for Nato and Russia. It was in their interest to escalate and sink as many ships as possible hiding behind Ukr. Why make proxies if you don’t use them? And they did that, starting with Moskva and after the nuke planes were hit Putin wanted to visit Anchorage.
It was in Russia’s interest to hit Ukr hard but they chose not to touch them and so they are stuck in a forever war. Too afraid to hit Us or Euro drones at their borders guiding missiles and drones, too afraid to hit Ukr. Iran does not have these mental problems or orders from Bibi to follow.
Iran will sink ships if war is restarted on a larve scale but even then, destroying the puppets around will be the main task. In the end, they are a bigger danger than a few ships that can be sunk at any moment with 80s tech. That game won’t work forever though. Saudi has spoken in favor of nukes one or two years ago. They will receive them eventually like Poland and Germany and Japan. Maybe Taiwan already has them, it would explain why Xi is pissing his pants when he sees Pelosi and keeps making new nukes like there’s no tomorrow. It’ll be a party in the third world of Brics losers and Euro-Japanese losers.

Anyone who plays UNO knows the wild cards Trump is holding is not the most powerful hand.  The wild card best use is to cause chaos in the game and change its pace.
There are more powerful cards.
For instance.  Someone can play a Wild Swap Card and exchange their hand with Trump’s wild card hand.
There is also a Wild Shuffle Card which means all the players cards are gathered up shuffled, and re dealt, completely resetting the game.
Kind of like the way Trump’s War is going for him.

The question you ought to be asking yourself is, ‘am I trying to convince the bar, or myself?’ It seems that your worldview is increasingly difficult to reconcile with observable reality, though perhaps you find it comforting. Apparently there were several cadualites on the destroyers, as well as several missing. So. Much. Winning.

Watching Trump spin hither and thither while posturing as a tough guy and desperately seeking a way out of his self inflicted dilemma is existentially amusing.

The Iranian navy was clearly close enough to the destroyers to sink them. That it did not do so might well be a sign that it currently does not want to escalate.

Iranians restraint is remarkable. What explains their withholding of violence against their murderous antagonists must be their religious beliefs, which are represented by the Ayatollah, who is also the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic. Christian Americans would not restrain themselves if offered an opportunity to use defense as an excuse to sink an enemy’s naval war ships blockading their ports. They cannot even stop themselves from waging unprovoked wars of aggression against much weaker nations. Their righteousness is of this world, and finds expression in the genocidal violence they and their proxies commit. That righteousness should be a source of stress for America’s opponents. The Americans and their proxy Israel could very well use nuclear weapons just because of a tactical defeat or strategic failure to achieve their goal or subdue their opponents.

Iran did not lose its oil route to China when the sea lane came under pressure. The main flow still moves through the shadow tanker network, ship-to-ship transfers, disguised cargoes, and Chinese refiners willing to absorb sanctions risk.

But Tehran has also kept open an overland option through the Eurasian rail corridor. Rail cannot match the volume of maritime exports, but it matters strategically. It means Iran is not solely dependent on Hormuz, the Gulf of Oman, or the Strait of Malacca. Even limited rail exports tell Washington that pressure at sea does not equal economic strangulation on land.

Posted by: Perimetr | May 8 2026 19:54 utc | 62

What’s the Range on a .50 Caliber?
The maximum range of a .50 caliber round, specifically the .50 BMG (Browning Machine Gun), can extend well beyond what most people imagine. While the effective range, meaning the distance at which the round maintains sufficient accuracy and energy to reliably hit a target, is typically around 1,500 to 2,000 meters (approximately 1.5 miles), the maximum range can reach a staggering 6,800 to 7,500 meters (approximately 4.2 to 4.7 miles).

However, it’s crucial to understand that achieving accuracy at these extreme distances requires specialized training, sophisticated optics, environmental awareness, and high-quality ammunition.

Not much risk to a destroyer unless it is boarded or of the small boats are suicide boats loaded with explosives. The small boats are not stable gun platforms.

The heavy deck guns look like overkill although they can cover the distance. The USN boarding parties carry shotguns firing slugs, pretty good for close in defense and the .50 BMGs certainly can cover what remains. Bunch of nasty bees all the same and an antipersonnel risk for bullet spraying weapons.

Adriatic Hillbilly @30:

If any of those tin cans cooked off their CIWS that is a really bad sign — that is “weapon of last resort” – and it is a one shot deal. There’s no reloading till you’re back in Norfolk…Informally, CIWS stands for “Captain, I was SURE…”

I am pretty sure this isn’t entirely true for systems like the phalanx. It is difficult to reload at sea, but not impossible. The big issue is that you get half a minute of firepower max and then in the best case it takes half an hour to replace the ammo cassette. While that means in a real firefight it is basically just a one-shot deal to use a phalanx, if the ship survives and they get a break in the action the crew should be able to prepare it for another fight.

I see no problem with the main point, though. If they used CIWS then it most certainly wasn’t a minor incident. That gets used in the “Oh fuck!” part of a fight.

The Block 1A and newer (pneumatic driven) CIWS mounts fire at a rate of 4,500 rounds per minute with a 1,550-round magazine.

Since the end of FY 2015, the US Navy has upgraded all Phalanx systems to the Block 1B variant. In addition to the FLIR sensor, the Block 1B incorporates an automatic acquisition video tracker, optimized gun barrels (OGB), and Enhanced Lethality Cartridges (ELC) for additional capabilities against asymmetric threats such as small maneuvering surface craft, slow-flying fixed and rotary-winged aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles. What a load of bullshit.

The PDS product .pdf file says the unit weighs 515 lbs empty.

The individual rounds weigh 0.58 lbs each.  So 1500 rounds is 870 pounds.

The minimum weight for a full reload is then 1385 lbs, not including handling gear, hoists and so on.

The total weight two sailors are expected to maneuver in “less that 4 minutes” is 515 lbs for the empty cassette plus 1385 lbs for the full one plus the weight of whatever gear they are using to jigger that shit around.

Unbelievable!

Paddy @ 24, Dr Eleven @ 55:

Firing at and generally harassing US warships may be the better long-term strategy to defeat the Americans.

The Iranians know that each time they fire missiles and send drones, they are potentially causing millions of US dollars worth of damage to US naval hardware that will have to be fixed, with the consequent diversion of money away from other, more important but less urgent military priorities. And a consequent drop in US sailor morale, leading to more laundry fires and blocked toilet systems if not outright mutiny on warships, will be music and poetry to Iranian ears.

Wounding your enemies rather than killing them outright, so they have to divert resources to repairing their equipment, weapons and other assets; and treating soldiers, and providing for their future welfare (and that of their families) for decades to come – and the effect this has on public morale and support for pursuing a war – is just as much a powerful strategy that the likes of Catdog misses. This is a major part of a war of attrition that Iran has adopted.

Plus actually sinking a US warship in Iranian waters, aside from creating a huge toxic oil and chemical spillage near a narrow waterway, would bring on other consequences Tehran does not want – like a resumption of Operation Epic Futility.

Eventually of course the US will try to strong-arm and threaten other NATO nations and other US allies into sending warships to Iran, at the cost of their own self-defence interests. What message will that send to Iranians and the rest of the world?

tooscents 88 – exactly, a crew of six with numerous ammo cans.  Each round on the sleeve needs to be loaded and feed properly, it a time consuming process.

Can you imagine this reload under fire?  LOL

That is a six barrel rotating auto gun, which can spew many hundreds of rounds of 20 or 30 mm ammo per minute.  You have to wonder how many rounds are held in the CIWS mount’s magazine?

A concentrated barrage of drones and cruise missiles would most likely cause much time expending reloads of the mount’s magazine, not the optimum while under fire.

Looks like harassment to me but with  real KIA and WIA on the Iranian side. ManPads on board of the fast boats would have done serious damage, just like long distance missiles.

The new CWIS versions are designed to take out fast boats along with everything else. Good for three minutes at a stretch in full automatic. Easy Winchester (out of ammo) with plenty of targets.

If these three Burke class DDG Destroyers were all under concentrated drone and cruise missile attack, you have to wonder just how much ordinance was expended in defense of these ships……..

They only have a finite amount of .50cal; 20mm and SM AAD missiles on board.  At some point the ammo locker is gone, gone, gone, and then you are in big trouble……time to leave the area asap!

Some of the fast boat video’s I have seen show deck mounted machine guns, perhaps  even heavy ones.

A standard .50 BMG round carries roughly 12,600 foot-pounds of muzzle energy, making it one of the most powerful cartridges ever fielded by any military. For perspective, that’s about 4.5 times more energy than a .308 Winchester (the classic deer hunting round) and more than 8 times the energy of the 5.56mm NATO used in most military rifles. The .50 cal occupies a category almost entirely its own, bridging the gap between small arms and light artillery.

We have finished the day after significant progress in the negotiation between the United States and Iran. We will resume soon after consultation in the respective capitals. Discussions on a technical level will take place next week in Vienna. I am grateful to all concerned for their efforts: the negotiators, the IAEA, and our hosts the Swiss government.

But the mediator of the talks, Oman’s foreign minister Badr Al Busaidi, had much more to say the next day, Feb 27th, on CBS’ program, Face The Nation.
Read the whole thing.

MINISTER ALBUSAIDI: Because if the ultimate objective is to ensure forever that Iran cannot have a nuclear bomb, I think we have cracked that problem through these negotiations by agreeing a very important breakthrough that has never been achieved any time before.
