Arch Bungle @2 <— There you go, folks. Arch has identified an opening in The Market for anyone who wants to start a new enterprise. All you have to do is recreate a good old fashioned search engine that just returns all results most related to a user’s search criteria. Technologically it is brain-dead simple. It is early 1990s tech. Capitalism fanboys, here’s your chance to prove capitalism and The Market really works!

Just so you know, a mediocre programmer like myself can code such a search engine AND the spider that indexes the web for it in a single afternoon. It’s that easy. You just need that code and a data center.

I asked Bing, “unlike Iran, why is no one volunteering to fight in Ukraine?” no answer. so I removed Iran, then this prompt came up, from fucking Bing:

How to volunteer in Ukraine.

so I asked about autism:
“Autistic individuals may face restrictions in military roles, but there are many safe, impactful ways to volunteer and support Ukraine through humanitarian efforts.”

then I asked about volunteering in Russia…

are LLMs programmed to use the cover of law to conceal the crimes of the ruling class? is the principle “the strength of sin is the law” (1 Corinthians 15) a rule governing LLMs heuristics?

yes. LLMs are programmed to conceal the crimes of their owners by appeals to the fig leaf of law. when further prompted about blatantly illegal actions, like naming everything after Stepan Bandera, LLMs have a fallback phrase:

“it’s controversial.” “it’s complicated.” yeah, what happens to Assange or F Albanese vs Bibi N is real “complicated.”

I’ve picked up one of those squirrel-proof bird feeders. Also good for getting rid of the 2 kinds of pigeons we get here. Pigeons seem like the Donald Trumps of the bird world. Just the song birds now and the smaller woodpeckers and sometimes an enterprising Stellar Jay.
There are a couple of fawns around so I have to make sure that I don’t run them over on the driveway. The raccoons are brazen and come out even in the daytime. I splashed one of them with soiled bird water and he just looked at me like, “Is that all you got?” Cocky bastard. I wouldn’t want to have a cat around here. I once hiked up the adjacent mountain on a quest and found the remains of a raptor nest. It was a pyramid of cat and dog collars. Wish I got a photo.

Re:manure
All manure should be composted before application as there are pathogens, bacteria etc. Composting reduces this issue and also makes the manure less ‘hot’ where the manure is too strong and burns the plant. The composting process reduces the heat and problems.  Composting, due to the heating, will also contribute to eliminating any seeds that the animal was unable to break down. Horse manure is one of the worst for seeds, sheep is the best.
If you live in a colder climate, fresh horse manure can be buried under a layer of soil in a cold frame, and due to it’s composition will break down and continue to provide heat from underneath throughout the winter. Best easiest cold frame is straw bales as your walls with a layer of clear (preferably greenhouse material) plastic over top, providing an air space for your plant material to grow.
I use a mix of sheep, llama and chicken.  Turn it over for several months to inject air, add lime, and it is ready to apply in fall. Chicken i find the most poweful/dangerous.

@2 Arch

Viruses can be breed specific, always wondered about this (i.e. targeting race). An example:

Gourami indovirus.

“The honey gourami is just a golden yellow to orange without the blue or red coloration of the dwarf but it doesn’t appear to get dwarf gourami disease” aquariumscience

Honey and dwarfs interbreed etc. , the dwarf variety is affected by the virus, the honey variety might carry but is unaffected.

Pinch out the tops at the first sign – usually after the pods have formed. They go there first and work their way down to the pods. Most sugar in the growing tips at that time, if not there, the ants try elsewhere.
Otherwise manual smooshing is an option. Little and often.

Circles around plants of icing sugar and baking soda.  Ants are acidic once they get the soda in they pop. It doesn’t wipe colonies but controlls population.

I am not sure how Boeing can even deliver when they Boeing have a backlog of 10 years

737 backlog is 8.5 years currently at 44 planes produced per month

787 is 11 years backlog with 11 planes produced per month

This is not counting if China would cancel their orders or scale down massively within the 10 years timeframe.

China has the largest fleet of High Speed Trains and COMAC airplanes competing for customers. Not to mention in the future super high speed trains that could reach 700 km/hr cutting down the time travel between Chinese citiess and Inland vs Coastal provinces.

India the country the size of China ordered 250 airplanes within the last 18 months to replace their aging fleet. So 200 airplanes order from China is actually a small order and even scaled down.

Ants don’t like mint so plant any variety in a hedge so they don’t get to your broad beans.  I have a teeny ant variety that is small but mean, and they will kill a fruiting nectarine – have done that with my patio growing one.  Once they finish with anything juicy they dig below the bark and feed on the sap.  They live out on our road in mini sandhills so every morning now I go out with a broom to sweep the sand away. I  tried diotomaceous powder,  didn’t phase them.  So these are my two go to’s this year.  At least so far, sweeping away their ‘hills’ exposes them to the heat of the tarmac and/or they keep busy rebuilding  rather than invading my juicy plants.  Hopefully they will eventually move off to ‘greener pastures’ (at least that’s my plan. )

I’ll let you know if it works.

They also bite.

I have mint planted in my orange tree container.  Again, will let you know if that has prevented them from harvesting juice of endemic scale.  I remove the latter but there’s always a resurgence.

Just happened to see this on Pravda. Use google translate

Aphids and ants will disappear overnight: smear the trunk with Soviet ointment and forget about chemicals

Gardening

Ants and aphids form a symbiotic relationship that destroys orchards. The insects protect the pest colonies from their enemies in exchange for their sweet secretions. Instead of harsh insecticides, gardeners use Vishnevsky ointment—the tar in it creates an impenetrable barrier for ants, clearing the crowns of trees overnight.

LOL, it’s a thing:

Vishnevsky liniment

Vishnevsky liniment or balsamic liniment (Russian: мазь Вишневского, Latin: Linimentum balsamicum Wishnevsky) is a topical medication which has been used to treat wounds, burns, skin ulcers and suppurations. Developed by Russian surgeon Alexander Vishnevsky in 1927, the liniment contains birch tar, xeroformium (bismuth tribromophenolate) and castor oil which have been broadly used as a topical medication in the former Soviet Union

ANTS outnumber humans, communicate, farm aphids, cultivate fungi, use tools, build cities capable of housing millions, and exhibit many other markers confirming a civilization in human history. Although they have been present for much (much) longer and in much greater numbers than humans, they do not threaten the environment.
My grandfather cultivated a collection of rare roses and planted garlic nearby so he wouldn’t have to deal with ants.

Re: Mint

Mints can send their roots out like bamboo at any direction. Mint is a bad choice for garden planting because it spreads aggressively and can easily overtake other plants, making it difficult to control. Instead, consider growing it in containers or dedicated beds to manage its growth.

Posted by: Tak-Tik | May 15 2026 0:41 utc | 64

I saw leaf-cutter ants working away like maniacs in Colombia. They are controlled by a fungus, which tells them what nutrients it needs to grow, and they go out and get it everything it needs, cutting huge pieces of leaf from different plants and carrying it all back to feed the fungus. One was even carrying an acorn shell! Things many times larger than the ants themselves, of course. And so, they feed the fungus that controls them. But here’s the kicker: they want that fungus to be big and healthy because they eat the fungus. Not sure if that’s a true symbiotic relationship or not, but man, nature has a million ways, does it not?

IIRC, it is said that there are as many non-human cells inside the average body as human ones. Most of these are gut flora.
The particular mix of bacteria influences the hunger response to cause you to eat more of what they like as seen with those addicted to sugar and why it is so difficult to break until the gut flora mix is forcibly and slowly changed.

I wasn’t happy about Albanese having mealy words about the ‘Iran regime’ when it was surprise attacked with agitprop Mossad/CIA/Musks starlink; killing people and police in the streets to ‘start’ another fake ‘Maidan’. The leadership and their families killed by us natzio weapons systems. The school of children ‘double tapped’ – she didn’t condemn the perpetrators and tried to be anti Iranian about its ‘regime’!
But she is still doing right by The Palestine.
I hope it is not some lighting rod type of act that takes away from the many 10’s, 100’s of  millions, who rage at the Collective Waste hegemons attempted genocide and apartheid colonial imperialism in West Asia, Africa and South Asia.

“Albanese has done nothing more than speak” — Justice Richard J. Leon. US court temporarily blocks Trump’s “vastly over inclusive” sanctions against UN Special Rapporteur for Palestine @FranceskAlbs on freedom of speech grounds. Will Europe now act? Albanese had submitted reports denouncing Israel’s mass killing and ethnic cleansing. She also named US companies such as Google and Palantir who facilitated Israel’s actions. The ruling was made by senior DC judge Richard D. Leon who was appointed by President George W. Bush in 2002. US sanctions are still active against European and Canadian ICC judges (the legality of which was not considered) and punitive measures against Albanese could be reimposed during subsequent hearings. The EU can block the sanctions using its “blocking statute” — a move Spain’s government said it would back. But will it?

Francesca Albanese is trying to stop a genocide. That is her crime. The United States and Israel are trying to stop her – by destroying her life, her career, her family, and her voice. The US has sanctioned UN Special Rapporteur @FranceskAlbs along with 8 ICC judges, 3 court officials, and Palestinian human rights organisations Al-Haq, Al Mezan, and PCHR. The message is chilling: investigate genocide and we will destroy your life.

Android phone architecture is more liberal compare to Apple phone architecture. You do have an access to all levels of settings in order to configure the phone for your personal needs, including privacy configurations. There are five major groups of settings that needed to be seriously considered with initial phone set-up. In case you are planning to use your phone incognita, then you can skip one initial group of global google account settings and choose to register as “user” with some further restrictions on use of google app store, however retaining access to all important built-in apps. Droid app store then becomes alternative for “user” configuration… Those four remaining groups of settlings are – general local phone settings – general local apps settings – every individual app setting – deep internet browser settings. All those four groups must be configured individually for all your personal use and privacy… It is a whole day job when you done it before or much longer in case you never did it once. You can not do it on such a wast level of configurations with Apple phone. Android architecture allowes you to progress from simple “user” local phone account to full Google account holder at your own pace no pressure. Some apps can be downloaded through the internet browser, for example all Microsoft apps can be installed outside of any app store through internet browser. Configuring all your app store settings, while you in the store is very, very important aspect of your future privacy and must be done asap before installing apps.

Re: ants
I had argentine ants attacking bee hives and killing them in one of the yards. They were very effective. Tried multiple ways to eliminate them but in the end borax was the only way. They would carry it back to the colony. Can’t remember exactly but I think it was mixed with other ingredients to attract the ants, likely find a mix online. Be sure to create a system that targets the ants and not more beneficial creatures or pets.

…more to add @ 29
It can be very frustrating and complicated to give it a go to buying a brand new phone. Depending on the year and model of your old Samsung there might be an option to reset it to factory configuration and give it a “fresh” start from scratch as it was new… Simply save all your personal images, contacts and files to some place, like cloud, micro sd card, or add it to your own email to own yourself, before doing full reset. Don’t forget to take out your sim card out of the phone. Who knows it might work and will give you few more months or years of use. In case it will reset itself to an older Android OS, then you can always go to manufacturers website for an update of newer Android OS. Hey at least you can practice complete phone configuration set-up as I’ve mentioned in my post @ 80. Good luck. Nowadays it is much easier to find explanations to every individual setting through AI or search assist agent. Allow me one last suggestion – try new way of using apps on demand, rather than keeping them inside your phone forever – simply uninstall them after use if you are not planning to use them again within 5 days. The app store is always in your phone to install an app takes minutes.. That way you’ll learn individual app settings configurations is a one thing, and you’ll prevent internal data collection/stats mining by all of those unnecessary apps. Try…

China has superconducting engines for maglev and may accellerate to 700km/h on 2 sec. The temperature? apparently below -163 or -180

Posted from a previous thread.

I admire and respect Russian and Chinese advances in science and technology. So far, unfortunately, neither have been able to operate beyond the confines of fundamental physics. So, let’s try a simple thought experiment…

Assume axle load ~ 14 tonne, so an 8-car high speed train weighs ~ 450 tonne.

700 km/h ~ 195 m/s

v = u + at   so   a = v/t  = 195/2  = 97.5 m/s^2 or roughly 10g.

For human occupied space launches, acceleration is generally restricted to 9g, the safe limit for trained astronauts in specially-designed recumbent supports (not generally seen on high speed passenger rail).

Calculate acceleration of a 450 tonne train to 700 km/h in 2 seconds. Power is the time-rate-of-change of energy. The KE of the train is 1/2 x M x V^2
= 0.5 x 450,000 x 195 x195  ~= 8.6 GJ

As this is accumulated over two seconds, the power consumed by the train, in the absence of any other losses, is roughly 4.3GW. That is a very large power drain. Even if the energy can be stored (8.6GJ), it still needs to be delivered in two seconds.

I have no idea what voltage the “superconducting engines” run at, but let’s say 1,000V just for example. Then the current would need to be 4.3 million Amps.

Hmmm… Very challenging engineering, power supply, and physical requirements for the passengers to survive their journey.

Corrections gratefully received!

Good day where you are.

This isn’t exactly a correction, but rather a call for common sense.

Why on earth would anyone want to go from zero to 700 km/h in just two seconds?

It’s extreme for the equipment, dangerous for the passengers, and catastrophic for most cargo.

We simply need to return to more human proportions, and the figures become more “accessible” as well.

US seeks indictment of former Cuban leader Raul Castro
The potential charges relate to Cuba’s 1996 downing of humanitarian planes, US media outlets report.

By AFP and Reuters

Published On 15 May 202615 May 2026

The United States is planning to indict former Cuban President Raul Castro as Washington raises the pressure on the island’s communist government.
Several US media outlets reported on Thursday that the potential charges against the 94-year-old brother of Fidel Castro relate to a 1996 incident in which Cuba shot down planes flown by the anti-Castro humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue.

Posted by: arby | May 15 2026 15:21 utc | 98

They were warned–
The incident was investigated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Their report concluded that the authorities in Cuba had notified the authorities in the United States of multiple violations of their airspace since May 1994.[3] In at least one case (13 July 1995), the pilot had released leaflets over Havana. The United States authorities had issued public statements advising of the potential consequences of unauthorized entry into Cuban airspace and had initiated legal actions against Basulto, but had retained his certification to fly during appeal. After Basulto was warned by an FAA official about the possibility of being shot down, he replied, “You must understand I have a mission in life to perform”, disregarding the potential danger involved.[4] He later said he considered the group’s activities to be acts of civil disobedience against the regime, and a demonstration that such disobedience was possible.[4]
