War On Iran: The Best Choice Is To Retreat – More Likely Though Is Escalation

U.S. President Donald Trump will give a live speech tonight at 9:00pm ET.

He might announce that:

  1. the U.S. will retreat from the War on Iran he had launched or
  2. that U.S. troops have started to invade Iranian territory.

No. 1 seems unlikely as AIPAC, hawkish Republicans and Zionist Democrats are all against a U.S. retreat.
No. 2 seems irrational as any invasion of Iranian territory is destined to end in defeat.

The U.S. has deployed additional A-10 ground fighter airplanes to the Gulf. Deploying these points to a ground operation, probably to seize some islands.

Meanwhile the severity of the global energy crisis the war has caused is starting to get recognize.

Ambrose Evans-Pritchard of the Telgraph is warning (archived) of the even bigger oil shock we need to expect if things escalate from here:

The world has lost over a tenth of its daily oil supply, along with critical volumes of jet fuel, diesel and refined petroleum products. Now prepare for loss of the next tenth, hitting just as all the short-term fixes are exhausted.

The pro-Iranian Houthis in Yemen have finally joined the Gulf war, opening a second front in the Red Sea and endangering a further 6pc of global oil supply.

David Fyfe, the chief economist at Argus Media, says prices will reach traumatic levels if the Red Sea now comes under fire and remains closed for weeks.

“You can pick any arbitrary number – $200[/bbl], or anything you want – the risk is that we’ll see huge demand destruction, inflation going through the roof and global growth shuddering to a halt. It is a horrible thought,” says Fyfe, who used to run the oil division at the International Energy Agency.

Every corner of the globe will be hit by Apr 20 or thereabouts. Regional prices will converge via arbitrage and there will then be a planetary oil crisis with very few places left to hide.

The horror this means for us average people – including mass starvation in the global South – seems hard to imagine but will soon become real.

There is pressure on Trump to “do something” about this. The best he could do to lower the consequences of an energy crisis is to retreat from the Middle East.

But to give up control over a major sea lane, one through which much of the blood of the global economy is flowing,  means to give up on the U.S. status as a super power and global hegemon. It would be a huge step, a necessary one in the long term, but one that is likely to only be taken after years of war and, like in Vietnam, a deeply punishing defeat.

Maybe Apple, Microsoft, Amazon et al each handed $2 million in yuan to pass through a virtual strait 🙃

I appreciate the intellectual engagement with this idea. I also agree with many (e.g. nemesiscalling) who feel that the terms need clarification. It isn’t simply a witticism or fatalist nihilism. It is rather that there is an inverse relation to how much we know in the age of information saturation as opposed to how much information we absorb. The more data the less certain we are of our footing. I know that I am sitting in my study and nothing really much more beyond that.

On the other hand I want to know more. Knowledge is not information, but the capacity to interpret information meaningfully and convert it into explanation. But when information becomes a relentless stream of contradictory bullshit, fatigue sets in becuase the only meaningful interpretation is that the information is meaningless, i.e., amounts to… nothing.

In other words, the purpose of information is to take place as a electron bouncing along a wire. This happens to be sure. But it is nothing in itself for I know nothing from it.

At least this is what my tired brain experiences.

Part of Harold Pinter’s Nobel Lecture (when winning the prize meant something) –

The United States supported and in many cases engendered every right wing military dictatorship in the world after the end of the Second World War. I refer to Indonesia, Greece, Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay, Haiti, Turkey, the Philippines, Guatemala, El Salvador, and, of course, Chile. The horror the United States inflicted upon Chile in 1973 can never be purged and can never be forgiven.

Hundreds of thousands of deaths took place throughout these countries. Did they take place? And are they in all cases attributable to US foreign policy? The answer is yes they did take place and they are attributable to American foreign policy. But you wouldn’t know it.

It never happened. Nothing ever happened. Even while it was happening it wasn’t happening. It didn’t matter. It was of no interest. The crimes of the United States have been systematic, constant, vicious, remorseless, but very few people have actually talked about them. You have to hand it to America. It has exercised a quite clinical manipulation of power worldwide while masquerading as a force for universal good. It’s a brilliant, even witty, highly successful act of hypnosis.

While I do not endorse the death penalty, I think DunGronin’ has a point.  It’s worth reading A.C. Graylings Towards the Light which provides many pages of evidence to support the view that only resistance and opposition to such shocking acts at many different levels changes the world and provides real freedoms. Otherwise we would still believing under religious absolutism and a host of other top down suppressive behaviours from far worse leaders in the past.

Ironically Dungronin has told me before (a long time ago) that nothing actually changes anything. I disagree.

Question on Iranian targeting –
Since the Israeli Air Force is inflicting serious damage on Iran, why isn’t Iran focusing their attacks on Israeli air bases? Given the censorship, I obviously don’t know what Iran is attacking, but it is clear that the Israeli Air Force is still flying.

Harold Pinter on President George Bush –

I know that President Bush has many extremely competent speech writers but I would like to volunteer for the job myself. I propose the following short address which he can make on television to the nation. I see him grave, hair carefully combed, serious, winning, sincere, often beguiling, sometimes employing a wry smile, curiously attractive, a man’s man.

‘God is good. God is great. God is good. My God is good. Bin Laden’s God is bad. His is a bad God. Saddam’s God was bad, except he didn’t have one. He was a barbarian. We are not barbarians. We don’t chop people’s heads off. We believe in freedom. So does God. I am not a barbarian. I am the democratically elected leader of a freedom-loving democracy. We are a compassionate society. We give compassionate electrocution and compassionate lethal injection. We are a great nation. I am not a dictator. He is. I am not a barbarian. He is. And he is. They all are. I possess moral authority. You see this fist? This is my moral authority. And don’t you forget it.’

Steady on Menz, on the surface the comment appears insensitive, but I believe Patroklos meant on this particular thread.

If I’m wrong, my apologies to you both. I’ll bud out.

The “Chads” I was referring to are Chad, catdog, princess, Simon and a few others I can’t even be bothered remembering. But, go on, get triggered and give them the platform they desperately seek.

Remember the F17s, a couple were shot down and quietly retired after the war.

Same with U2, no more overflights. The Blackbird? Intercepted by MiG 25s, retired.

A10s, shot up bad by 23mm but survivable. 30mm and 57mm? Quietly retired from front line service and relegated to NG. The coalition lost something like 77 aircrafts in that war. I don’t have the stats for A10 losses

Against a nation that was sanctioned and had severely degraded air defense faced with a military a 100x more formidable than today.

CENTCOM fucked up good and posted a photo of a B52 over Saudi Arabia (geolocated).

Again, I repeat Trump’s “kissing my ass” comment will see the knifes out in the Al Saud household.  Those 100s of Princes will not want to submit to an ass kissing faggot. That’s “slave” status in Wahhabi society.

We’ll get a better read after Easter. I just hope Iran erase more of the Pedophile regime’s footsoldiers in the meantime.

Lastly, cable guy. Turn off the TV and devices. Grow vegetables and run barefooted.  Reconnect with Mother Earth.

Peace.

We study more and more things to find more knowledge, only to put it on shelves in books, store on electronic memory devices or the cloud, only to then forget about it.
The more information that is accumulated also means people will have less in common and so vastly different viewpoints. This causes more division between people.

Posted by: forgotusername | Apr 2 2026 0:52 utc | 419

Airstrips are actually not the most target rich environment imaginable, they are in some respects mostly just huge tracts of open flat space. The Iranians clearly have some capacity to target high value targets inside of airstrips in real time like the AWACs they took out but for the most part your satellite imagery might just show a sea of hangars and it’s probably hard to know exactly what (if anything) is occupying any hangar at any given time.

Due to military secrecy we’ll probably never have that clear of a picture of what is or is not being damaged or destroyed in missile and drone attacks.

@385 Karlof

I had hoped the irony would have been visible, given I noted Russia had signed related convention, and I was also aware of various statements related to Ukraine. How is one supposed to take those seriously though when the most blatant genocide in recent history is unfolding before our eyes without a peep from Russia ? The (lack of) combination makes the use of the mentioned term genocide look like an opportunistic political garnish.

For example the presentation mentioned steers us towards Nazi and so ‘genocide of jews’ , which is THE genocide/’genocide’ that counts in the western sphere per a certain narrative, one Russia might attempt to utilise by placing an equivalence between anti-semitism and russophobia. Unwittingly, thinking German law or US political stance was general public sentiment, I would doubt.

Russians are not so stupid I think as to trap themselves in a definition that has negative connotations, meaning being caught off guard associating as ‘jewish’ then finding ‘jewish is the opposite and actually genocidal’.

It is ‘the jewish state’ at political level after all, and that with legal parameters said to occupy a primary status in Russian political decision making .

The idea of stirring european sentiment against some factions resident in Ukraine would be misplaced also; most people don’t like anything about what goes, and is going on, there.

So short of labelling actions in occupied Palestine as genocidal being an embarrassment to own position, which is no excuse at all to not label and could even be seen as a prepared excuse (so further hollowing out statements you mention) , various other reasons are suggested:

Jewish influence on Russia.
Russia being invested in the jewish direction of control of Palestine.
Globalist arrangements.
Etc.

You might include broader strategy, Russian citizens and so on.

Whatever, I won’t speculate and it is all beside the point. As leading power at UN and with international standing, the silence, and the verbal abstention on US takeover, can only be taken as purposeful and decisive.

It is not a question of pot calling kettle, either. We already know, criticise, protest, western inaction or positions.

There is no reason I know of to exempt Russia from similar scrutiny.

Spoke for 20 minutes.  All done.  Basically he used really flowery language to describe the wonderfulness of the US, flowery language to describe the evilness of Iran, and alluded to a big attack on Iran that will happen in the next week or two.  He also described the economy he inherited as being the worst ever, used flowery language to describe how wonderful the economy is now, and mentioned “no inflation”.

It did not sound like he made very many truthful statements.  It’s like he was in the warmup phase of a dramatic speech with big important stuff.  Then he just did his God Bless America thing.  Parts of his speech were just reading his previous truth social postings presumably from the teleprompter.

I just finished watching Trump’s latest blarg-fest, some people will say it was a nothing burger, but the truth is Trump cant admit to the public that he’s going to escalate the war with Iran (big bombing campaign for this long weekend), so he gives a bland nothing burger speech so people can read their own hopes into it.  But we’ve long since reached the point with the US that what the empty suits say doesnt matter a twit, only their actions do and the US is moving a 3rd aircraft carrier into the region to replace the battled damaged USS Ford, 30,000 troops and more than 100 additional aircraft.  these assets are going to be used (and lost) over the next 2 weeks and then we’ll have another nothing burger speech to distract the plebs as the 4th carrier is sent in.

Takes a lot more stamina than I have to watch a Trump speech, even just playing in the background with the sound off, even in the goofy first term and primaries I could never do it, he’s really a sound bite guy, those I have a morbid attraction to. But admit it, don’t we all.
Here’s a story:

When I still believed I watched the Gore-Bush debate where Gore showed up in Reaganesque war paint, I had asked a work friend for a joint’s worth of weed for the occasion, friend gave me fatty and said go easy it’s pretty strong hydroponic from British Columbia, an oddly long way to go for weed considering we’re in NYC in my opinion.

Not unfamiliar with chronic I smoked half the doob and tuned in the War Paint spectacular waiting for Gore to tear into dumbo Baby Bush. Holy shit, it was the strongest weed I’d ever encountered, blew my mind, hero Gore scared the f’ing bejesus out of me, scared me straight! The rastas call it the “weed of wisdom” for a reason, that wasn’t the last time I smoked chronic, but it was the last time I watched a president or presidential candidate for any time longer than a sound bite. Take it as a warning, if Al Gore could almost send me to the cuckoo’s nest, don’t watch the Trump speech tonight – you could actually get struck dead!

the reason it’s not being covered is because the powers that be have declared that this story is unimportant because whatever happens the state will not pursue this line of progress and advancement.  As such, valuable public coverage will not be “wasted” on what is functionally a dead end for the monied interests.  If the monied interests wanted a new space race there would be wall-to-wall coverage, but they dont, so there is nothing.

Completely deranged speech. Didn’t hear a single line of truth in it. Insane. It amounts to a cop out. He started with the typical litany of lies about Iran and nuclear weapons. Then dragged on about the super duper American military and its “decimation” of Iran. Then said it was almost over and that he would wrap it up by hitting the electricity systems in Iran and bring it back to the stone age. But he wouldn’t hit the oil, which other countries should go get themselves once the straight “opens naturally.” Lunatic. But behind it was a freak out. He needs the war to end and needs to spin a victory. He defined regime change as having killed the Leader. Ok.

Arch, the contract says the “government” of the United States, not the United States.  The attack on Iran clearly isn’t a defense of the United States but the “government” can concoct many reasons why military action is defending “them”.  I think if you trimmed the beard, removed the weird hat, and replaced the robe with a suit, every Ayatollah would look just like every other white oil tycoon, not that that has anything to do with young Americans who sign contracts to fight for the government of the United States.

I think you need to take a close look at what the Ayatollah actually is.

I speak as a Buddhist, and to me the Ayatollahs have lived exemplary, ascetic lives.

They are the embodiment of holy men, in the idealised sense.

Russia is committing genocide in Ukraine , emptying the country for the Khazar Nazis to be able to call it a land without a people for a people without a land, after the  Occupiers of  Palestine have been destroyed or dispersed by Iran.

That doesn’t preclude the possibility that Russia won’t genocide the Khazar Nazis after they have fled Tel Aviv and occupied Ukraine.

Within my moral compass  killing Nazi  criminals who murder Russians in Donbass or  who torture innocent Muslims in Palestine ,  isn’t Genocide. It’s  Justice.

I am staying away from the US day shift because I can’t read or even scan the wild speculations,   or the wild Speculators Trump and Netanyahu spinning  them into confusion.

Dozens of A-10s took at least some damage during the Gulf war, which was about 100 years ago. But so far, there has only been one USrael manned aircraft confirmed damaged in the air by Iranian fire, the F-35. A-10 is likely considered safe to deploy, if Iran is indeed its target. Drones of course are likely to be used in riskier missions than manned aircraft, even intentionally sacrificed as bait to locate AD. Low-flying A-10 may also be harder to see and target in the mountains of Iran than the deserts of Iraq.
Posted by: catdog | Apr 1 2026 23:22 utc | 363

Yes, Iranian AD is gone. It was probably never there in the first place. They’re brown skinned goat herders, and aren’t smart enough to create anything that could remotely counter the superior intellect, strategy, and morals of the mighty American empire. They haven’t even put up a fight to this point, given the less than a dozen casualties suffered by the US, and only a single aircraft damaged.

Next, the invincible A-10 aircraft are going in, along with US troops who are effectively unkillable. They’re going to wipe out what remains of Iran. Likely not a single airplane will receive damage from Iranian rocks and sticks. Any civilians that get in the way of military or civilian targets will be slaughtered with no discretion. Children will be given no quarter. They can negotiate with bombs. This will teach them to stand up in any way to a half century of constant US aggression. They will learn their place.

Once that work is wrapped up, the US can steal the gold, steal the oil, and make Iran a failed state slave colony like Libya. For their own good, because they were killing innocent protestors and the US cares about civilians that it also bombs indiscriminately. If they’re lucky, the US may move in and turn Iran into a Western paradise. Full of homeless people sleeping in gutters, OD’d on Fentanyl, and rich people manipulating markets, robbing the Treasury, and abusing children for fun. Strait of Hormuz becomes Strait of Trump, with a 500 ft Trump statue straddling Kharg Island like a reincarnated Colossus of Rhoads.

Meh.  It was so short and he spent the whole time defensively bragging about all that Zio Imperialist winning in the ME.  The lies were fast and thick at that point and of the “Iran is destroyed but we gotta keep fighting it” variety.  Really over the top anxiety to convince you of just how brilliant and strong the Zio Imperialist force is.  He looked nervous.
It was at least interesting how he just abandoned Hormuz.  Basically said he’d leave it for others to deal with, which sounds like he’s ready to pack it in.

Very reasonable taking apart of Putin’s politics vis-a-vis Palestine. I want to add that there is a difference between Putin’s and Lavrov’s positions in the matters of Middle East in general. IIRC Lavrov was very very unhappy with letting Assad be toppled by the ‘moderate terrorists’ – as Lavrov called the head choppers around Jolani.
Lavrov intended to retire some years ago and Putin had to ask him to stay – IIRC.

Can you imagine what it must like to be a deployed soldier who is with it enough to realize they are fighting and dying for the wrong cause?
Yea, it made sense at the time to enlist cause there were no good jobs anyway. An education and a military pension, seemed a good deal.
There will be a further population reduction this Easter weekend of working class Americans who didn’t  know what they were signing up for.
Same with the IDF, they and the American military and Nato have no honour. They have no solid ground to stand on. They will be defeated.
Russia and China will do overwatch and learn from Iran and waffle politically until they can’t anymore.

The ABC’s Americas editor, John Lyons, reacted to Donald Trump’s address by pointing out the “inherent contradictions” in it.

“If they’re no threat at all, why would you want to push a country into ‘the Stone Age’?” he wondered.

“The headline here is he hasn’t escalated it in terms of ground troops. He escalated it in terms of rhetoric.”

There were other contradictions, of course. The Strait of Hormuz will reopen “naturally”, Mr Trump said, seconds after arguing that other countries should send in their militaries to “take” and “protect” it. Iran, whose nuclear program he “totally obliterated” last year, was also “on the doorstep” of having nukes.

Centinal,  The A10’s are being used to destroy the small boats in the gulf used to mass on ships.  Since they are slow it gives the pilot time to discern whether the boat is just a civilian vessel or a threat.  The pilot sits in a titanium bathtub-like cove so he won’t be killed by projectiles and the plane is notoriously hard to kill.  They will also use them in conjunction with fast helicopters to attack defensive positions on the coast and on the islands.  If a land invasion is conducted the A10 won’t be involved except for near the borders or in the event that an airstrip is created or captured inside the country.
