War On Iran: – Ceasefire In Lebanon, – Hormuz Re-opened, – Talks To Continue

On April 8 2026 the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States had agreed on a ceasefire:

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has been mediating negotiations, said early on Wednesday that the ceasefire was effective immediately.

Trump said he had agreed to “suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks” if Tehran agrees to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for oil and other exports from the Gulf.

Iran has agreed to allow vessels through the Hormuz Strait for two weeks, with their passage coordinated by the Iranian military.

Unfortunately there was one issue that had prevented the ceasefire from being implemented in full:

According to Sharif, the ceasefire will also take effect in Lebanon, where Israel has been fighting the Iranian-backed armed group Hezbollah.

Israel has backed the deal but says it “does not include Lebanon”, renewing strikes on Wednesday in the Tyre and Nabatieh areas in the south of the country. Trump’s press secretary Karoline Leavitt later also said that Lebanon was not included in the deal.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) promised a “regret-inducing response” if strikes on Lebanon continue.

As USrael were unwilling to commit to the inclusion of Lebanon in the ceasefire, as negotiated, Iran kept the Strait of Hormuz closed.

The accumulating economic damage caused by the closure put pressure on the U.S. to rectify the issue. Yesterday, after increasing pressure from Washington DC, Israel finally agreed to temporarily cease its war in Lebanon:

Israel and Lebanon’s leaders have both welcomed the truce, with Netanyahu calling it an “opportunity to make a historic peace agreement”.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said he hopes the agreement will allow those have been displaced by the conflict to return to their homes.

Hezbollah has also signalled a willingness to participate in the ceasefire but said it must include “a comprehensive halt to attacks” across Lebanon and “no freedom of movement for Israeli forces”.

Iran’s foreign ministry welcomed the ceasefire, with spokesperson Esmail Baghaei expressing his “solidarity” with Lebanon. Tehran had insisted that its own two-week ceasefire with the US should include Lebanon while the US and Israel said it did not.

Following the ceasefire Iran’s Foreign Minister today announced the re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz:

Seyed Abbas Araghchi @araghchi – 12:45 UTC · Apr 17, 2026

In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage for all commercial vessels through Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open for the remaining period of ceasefire, on the coordinated route as already announced by Ports and Maritime Organisation of the Islamic Rep. of Iran.

The re-opening announcement gives some hope that further war can be avoided. It is a relief for commodity markets.

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the re-opening of what he now calls “the Strait of Iran”.

Talks between Iran and the U.S. mediated by Pakistan are continuing.

There are several issues which are still open.

The ceasefire in Lebanon is fragile and unlikely to hold:

Rather than creating a realistic mechanism for de-escalation, it embeds a framework of asymmetry that neither side can genuinely sustain. It does not resolve a single core dispute. It does not create balance. It does not oblige Israel to end its destruction of southern Lebanon. It does not remove the trigger that can restart the war in a matter of hours. It simply postpones the next collision.

The original April 8 ceasefire Tehran had agreed to was related to its closure of the Strait of Hormuz which had followed the unprovoked USreali attack on Iran. The re-opening of the Strait does not mean that Iran will refrain from asking for a reparation contribution, or ‘toll’, from all ships taking the ‘coordinated route’ near the Iranian island of Ladak.

After the announcement of the original ceasefire the U.S. announced a blockade of all shipping to, from, and related to Iran. Earlier today Iran had hinted that it will close the Bab-al Mandeb entry into the Red Sea should the U.S. blockade persist.

It is jet unknown if, how and when the issue of the blockade is to be solved. Should the U.S. be unwilling to lift it, the conflict is sure to re-escalate.

Iran has so far won the war that Trump had launched against it.

None of Trump’s four original war aims have been achieved. Iran continues to have enriched Uranium and a civil nuclear program. It continues to support its partners in Yemen, Iraq and Lebanon. It still has ballistic missiles and its IRGC Navy is still in good order.

At the same time Iran has gained additional leverage, now acknowledged by Trump, by controlling the Strait of Hormuz.

What it has no gained yet is a lifting of sanctions the U.S. and others had imposed on it.

It might need, at some point, to again increase its pressure on the U.S. to also achieve that goal.

Posted by: Norwegian | Apr 17 2026 14:53 utc | 12

—❗️🇺🇸/🇮🇷 IMPORTANT NOTES:

– Opening the Strait of Hormuz was part of the original 2-week ceasefire agreement, but this was dependent on a ceasefire in Lebanon.

– As soon as the ceasefire was declared in Lebanon, Iran also abided by its promise — opening the Strait of Hormuz for commercial shipping.

– This ‘opening’ is only valid for the duration of the ceasefire, unless it is extended upon mutual agreement.

– The Strait of Hormuz is under full sovereignity of Iran, and ships are only allowed to pass through the corridor designated by the IRGC Navy and with prior Iranian permission.

– American military vessels are not allowed to cross the Strait of Hormuz.

https://t.me/Middle_East_Spectator/31096

—❗️🇺🇸/🇮🇷 Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency:

Iran has imposed 3 conditions for ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz:

1. Ships must be commercial; the passage of military ships is prohibited, and neither the ships nor their cargo should be related to ‘hostile’ countries.

2. Ships must pass through the route designated by Iran.

3. The passage of vessels must be coordinated with the IRGC Navy.

The Empire’s grand strategy (thanks to Mark Sleboda)
https://open.substack.com/pub/worldlinesletter/p/the-fragmentationist-grand-strategy-947?r=b9n95&utm_medium=ios
Note to Readers: This is Part II of a comprehensive structural analysis of the US-led empire’s defining geopolitical doctrine. If you missed Part I, where we diagnosed the structural decay of the imperial core, traced the historical shift from direct colonial occupation to the engineered “physics of state collapse,” and established why the empire views large, autonomous states as an existential threat—you can read it here.
In this concluding part, I formally outline the five-step operational sequence of the Fragmentationist Grand Strategy.
We will explore how shattered states are captured via the “Reconstruction Trap” and how intact states are subjected to forced “re-compradorisation”—often in conjunction with peace, ease of sanctions or sieges, or ceasefire talks.

I expect the current “ceasefire” to end the same way as before, with a sneaky attack upon sensitive Iranian and Palestinian infrastructure, if not the outright “shock and awe” that Col. “What it [Iran] has not gained yet is a lifting of sanctions the U.S. and others had imposed on it.”

Well, I don’t think it is that necessary for Iran to have the Western sanctions lifted. Asia and the Global South can supply everything, including vital things Irish whisky (through a third country like India), with payments made through CIPS.

Key negotiations points to keep are (1) no US military base in the region (2) Hormuz toll to pay for repair and rebuild (3) civil nuclear program (4) missiles as they wish (5) helping their friends and allies as they wish.

Western sanctions : “leave that, we don’t care”.

Hormuz virtual mine field still in force

Seyed Abbas Araghchi @araghchi – 12:45 UTC · Apr 17, 2026
In line with the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage for all commercial vessels through Strait of Hormuz is declared completely open for the remaining period of ceasefire, on the coordinated route as already announced by Ports and Maritime Organisation of the Islamic Rep. of Iran.

Note the wording. Ships will have to pass through the narrow corridor along the Iranian coast. The Ports and Maritime Organisation of the Islamic Rep. of Iran published a map of the “coordinated route” on April 8th. This map shows a large “Hazardous Area” covering the Omani part of the Strait. I still suspect there are technical limitations on how many ships a day can pass through the “coordinated route”.

* * *

I call the “Hazardous Area” a minefield, although I do not think Iran has ever laid mines there. The reason is legal fiction. The rules of naval warfare allow Iran to mine the Strait to prevent US warships from passing. The rules do not allow Iran to fire on neutral commercial shipping. By hinting that the marked area is a minefield and not a free-fire-zone Iran can enforce its control of the Strait without overtly violating international law. So far no shipper or insurance company has challenged Iran’s claim that the area is hazardous, be there mines or not.

Also, see my post from yesterday:

Marine tracker  shows Traffic in the “Strait of Iran” looks pretty dead. Ships and their insurance companies must fear that the crossing and the trip out or in is still too risky.
Trumps blockade it still there “In Full Farce”  and the USN has a bloody history lately of blowing up fishing boats and hijacking oil tankers.

This is a great victory for Iran. They look like the good guys. While Trump takes further blame for breaking the world’s supply chains.

The Iranian leadership has been very clear.

They are not in favor of ceasefires between battles.
This ceasefire therefore serves only one purpose: to facilitate negotiations for a lasting peace.

If that doesn’t happen, they will simply resume fighting.

Personally, I can add that this ceasefire demonstrates to the Iranians, the Americans, and the rest of the world that Iran is a rational actor, seeking peace despite being the one being attacked.

It will also prevent claims that future losses were “avoidable through negotiation.”

It’s difficult to understand all these complaints about the ceasefire, as if Iran had harmed anyone.
If it fails, it will have failed, period.

The sad thing is that the dumb iranians fell for the american lies yet again and the jews smirking behind their backs. Some additions. From Escobar’s X:

MBS may have made his play.

No Saudi war on Iran.

No use of Saudi airspace for striking Iran.

That’s right after Lavrov met Saudi FM Faisail al-Saud.

Russia proposes a new security architecture for the Persian Gulf. Guaranteed by Russia, China, Turkiye, Pakistan.

Next, there was a series of meetings today in Moscow featuring the Foreign Ministers of the CIS. the Central Asian states, Russian Security Council where the lead presentation was given by Lavrov, and then there were Lavrov’s remarks at a joint presser with CIS General Secretary Sergey Lebedev that announcedStatement by the CIS Foreign Ministers on the situation in the Persian Gulf. Here’s what IMO is the important excerpt from Lavrov’s remarks at the presser:

It was noted that the crisis created in the Persian Gulf region and engulfing, in fact, the entire Middle East, is radically changing the general trends on the Eurasian continent, including from the point of view of ways to ensure the security of the countries of certain subregions of Eurasia and, of course, from the point of view of the reliability and security of routes for the delivery of energy, food and fertilisers.

All this will have to be rethought, developing our common concept of ensuring the development of the Greater Eurasian Partnership with the participation of the CIS, the SCO, ASEAN and other integration associations. In the context of shaping our common approach, we and our Belarusian friends have begun to promote this idea – the concept of forming a security architecture on the Eurasian continent. It is clear that many countries located in all parts of Eurasia are now reassessing and rethinking the agreements on which their economic interests, prospects for their development and interests of ensuring their security were based. [My Emphasis]

And here’s what IMO is the important section of the joint statement:

Proceeding from the inadmissibility of any attacks on civilian objects and condemning attacks on civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings, hospitals, schools, structures of global and national cultural and historical heritage, as well as elements of energy supply systems, including nuclear power plants, oil and gas storage facilities.

Stress the need to ensure the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Arab states of the Persian Gulf. [My Emphasis]

These are clearly aimed at the Outlaw US Empire and its Zionist proxy with the second paragraph clearly stating the inadmissibility of the Zionist Greater Israel project although neither are directly named. I see Zakharova issued a statement on the Lebanon Truce but unfortunately promoted UN Security Council Resolution 1701. IMO, the resolution is no longer apt mainly because Lebanon’s executive is captured by the Zionists. IMO, the only way for the security of the Levant and Persian Gulf region to be attained is for the removal of all Outlaw US Empire and Zionist influences from those areas so a truly indivisible security pact can be arranged.

Listening to https:   //youtu.be/ionE4H44LUA   Nima / Larry Johnson / Colonel Wilkerson

Their take is the opposite of the current MOA take.  Their take is that it’s a huge win for Iran, and a huge loss for the US.  Part of the problem for the US is that the Truth Social posts are so disjointed that they undermine any good will that the US might have gotten from the agreement.

If I read the fine print carefully, it is Friday and the ceasefire ends on Tuesday.  So the “get out of jail for a fee” card is just long enough for the ships trapped north of the Strait of Hormuz to get out.  It is not clear if ships belonging to “hostile to Iran nations” will be allowed out.  At any rate, Iran decides on a ship by ship basis.

I am seeing rumors that Chinese cargo planes are landing in Iranian air ports, and Iran is furiously rebuilding recent damage.  Wilkerson and Johnson talk about a new very strong set of sanctions against China.  China is unhappy enough “to react”.  Russia / Iran / China seem to be making major preparations.

Not sure how this will play out at all.  Trump and his buddies are making a ton of money due to the huge price swings for oil and likely the DOW, but that’s just standard procedure.  The corruption of the US is highlighted by how normalized this is.  Monday or Tuesday would be reasonably high odds for kinetic fireworks to start.

No wonder Netanyaho was bragging that he has remade the Middle East.

You’re right, Trump and Netanyahou have remaded the Middle Est. But how ?

First, no one will believe that the Dow Jones indicates the outcome of a distant US war.

Second, It wasn’t a pitched battle.
On the contrary, two nuclear powers attacked a “small” country that single-handedly inflicted defeat upon them.
That’s even more humiliating.

As for talking about allies, you’d be wise to avoid it.

The United States leads NATO, the most powerful military alliance of 32 countries, as well as the “Quad” in the Indo-Pacific, not to mention its Japanese and Korean vassal states.

In the Middle East, they have had a military presence in nine allied or vassal states for decades: Oman, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, and Syria.

But they haven’t managed to mobilize any ally other than Israel for their war of choice.

And after less than five weeks of confrontation with Iran, they have been driven out of six countries, withdrawn from one, Syria, and are on the verge of being completely expelled from an eighth, Iraq.
They have only two bases left out of the twenty or so they initially had, after failing to defend Arab allies who nevertheless paid dearly for this “protection.”
Israel is not sure to survive this war of choice.

So yes, they have remaded the Middle Est, with a weak or no Israel and no more USA bases. What a feat.

One would think that they and their supporters would be the last to want to talk about “allies” or “succes”.

Cheerleading/ trolling so badly should be sanctioned by law.

On another tangent, it usually takes about 45 days from loading in ras tanura, saudi, to reach discharge in say rotterdam or some such place. So from my own experience, 3 vlcc:s per month, one loading 2mbbls at ras tanura and the second rounding south africa and the third discharging in europe, in total 6mbbl/month. and on and on, including partial discharges or lightening operations in some secluded spot since saudi’s requirement was discharge at one point only, buyer’s refineries!

I don’t really understand what Iran got from this so called “deal”. Yes, Israel stopped the war on Lebanon for now, but to be fair .. they should know better by now. And also they get a similar respite to fix the damage inflicted on them. Another ceasefire with no real signs that it can be permanent.
Also, Strait is open, maybe its pressure from China maybe not, but the EU vultures are trying to maximize the moment to get their navy in the region which shouldn’t be a good sign for Iran.
What are the other points that Iran agreed with US?

The question is whether Trump/US has arrived at the usual “Declare victory and leave” phase

That’s what he would do… If he didn’t leave behind an Israel practically defenseless against Iranian missiles.

That’s the leverage Iran has to obtain something more than just a ceasefire.

ChatGTP’s summary of Nel Bonilla’s essay “The Fragmentationist Grand Strategy – Part 2”
If her analysis is correct, it may take several generations to play itself out and see the empire finally collapse.
The essay argues that U.S. foreign policy since the end of the Cold War follows a coherent but largely unacknowledged “fragmentationist grand strategy.” Rather than directly conquering or governing other countries, the U.S.-led system seeks to prevent the emergence of large, autonomous states that could challenge its global dominance.

At its core is a repeatable five-step process: identify a target state whose size or independence poses a threat; contain it through military encirclement and sanctions; weaken its regional alliances; fragment it internally by inducing crisis and instability; and finally absorb the resulting pieces into a U.S.-dominated financial and security order.

The essay claims this strategy reflects structural constraints. Unlike earlier empires, the U.S. cannot rely on formal colonial rule, so it uses indirect tools—finance, sanctions, proxy forces, and global institutions—to achieve similar ends. Large, self-sufficient states are seen as “intolerable” because they can anchor rival economic and geopolitical systems.

Two main “absorption” paths are described: shattered states are controlled through conditional reconstruction and debt systems (“reconstruction trap”), while intact states are pressured through economic leverage and internal elite alignment (“re-compradorisation”).

The author argues this pattern has appeared in cases like Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya, and Syria, and continues today as the global system shifts from unipolarity to multipolarity. However, the strategy is portrayed as self-defeating: by destabilizing regions and weaponizing global systems, it accelerates the formation of alternative blocs and parallel institutions, ultimately undermining U.S. dominance.

Overall, the essay presents fragmentation not as ad hoc policy but as an emergent, systemic logic of a declining hegemonic order.

The victory is Hezbullah’s.
Up until now, USUKIS has assumed that its baby , the head-circumcised civilisation of marauding Khazar Nazis occupying Palestine was protected from the North by its mercenaries gathered  in Syria under Jewlani-Baghdadi bribes.

Hezbullah has demonstrated that neither of these two cookies is baked hard enough to withstand Hezbullah’s bite.
Both the IDF and the Tajik takfiris have crumbled  under the crunch of Hezbullah fighting.

Meanwhile , the Sunnis and Shi’a have replied their 1000 year old argument, on the basis that both the Shi’a and the Sunni are upholding the basic tenets of Islam.

Sunni Muslims regularly break the rules of Islam about marriage and riba’a/ interest.
Therefore neither side can claim moral superiority, and their main differences can therefore be ignored.

As a result,  the Islamic threat to  USUKIS Colonial barbarism has vastly increased.
Meanwhile, as confirmed by honest analysts like Alistair Crooke , the lies about Al Qaida and  Islamic State  not being funded and controlled by USUKIS are now fully exposed.

In simple terms, thanks to Trump’s stupidity in murdering Ayatollah Al Khameinei pbuh on cold bloodied aggression, USUKIS ‘  tame pitbulls of Mercenary takfiris has now been  CASTRATED.
And the new Joint Alliance of the Muslim Ummah has been EMPOWERED.

As Muslims often say about stupidity,  Trump would have been better advised to have left West Asia alone.
But unfortunately for USUKIS Empire, the damage to its standing in the world has already,  totally unnecessarily, been done.

Trumps claim about receiving Iran’s uranium is basesless:

🇮🇷⚡️🇮🇱🇺🇸 Iranian source to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed: Trump’s claim about the delivery of Iran’s enriched uranium is baseless

– Only civilian ships, and only through routes specified by Iran, can pass through the Strait of Hormuz. The announcement of the temporary reopening of the Strait of Hormuz has no connection to the current negotiations with Washington.

– We waited several hours to ensure that the ceasefire in Lebanon was established; after that, we temporarily reopened the Strait of Hormuz. The announcement of the temporary reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the ceasefire in Lebanon are part of the agreement.

– Negotiations on disputed issues with the US are still ongoing but have no clear outlook due to Washington’s excessive demands.

– Washington’s demands in the negotiations remain illogical and unreasonable. The US president’s claim about obtaining Iran’s enriched uranium is baseless.

Look at Pakistan-Afghanistan War is you want to know whether the ceasefire will last.
Pakistan declared open war on Afghanistan on February 27; the US and Israel started their war of aggression against Iran on February 28. It should be obvious that the two events are linked.
I believe that Asim Munir is attacking Afghanistan at the behest of the US in order to deny China a land route to Iran. Pakistan has been a US puppet ever since Imran Khan was removed in the coup back in 2022, Turkmenistan did not join BRICS due yielding to US pressure, it’s very unlikely they would allow aid pass through their country to Iran. Afghanistan is very anti-US and likely to allow aid through, hence the war to disrupt the land route.
The fact that Munir ousted Imran Khan in 2022 (during the Biden presidency), means that the war against Iran has been years in the making, and would have happened regardless of whether Trump got reelected.
If the Pakistan-Afghanistan War is continuing, it means that the US wants to keep the land route closed, thus continued hostilities is almost certain, if it ends, it means that the US has given up.

How did Iran win from this?  DID they win?  Not entirely sure.  But from what I can tell, here is justifications for the “Iran Won” narrative.  Of course, as Posted by: james | Apr 17 2026 15:56 utc | 56 points out, should war break out on Tuesday (or earlier), it will not be much of a win.  Then again, it will not be any loss either.

Iran has gained legitimacy for their right to charge fees for ships passing through the Strait.  This will persist even if the US attacks Iran for a THIRD time.  Right now, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea need oil from the Gulf area.  Now it’s only the US blocking it.  The Iranian diplomatic team comes across as FAR more professional than the US diplomatic team.  Posting Iranian posts alongside US posts emphasizes that the world would prefer to deal with Iran rather than the US.  The US blockade will increase distrust and dislike of the US.
This is a brief case for “Iran is in a reasonably good place.”  Definitely not bad for a nation that just faced down over a month of US Shock and Awe.  Then again, regardless of what they do, there is a decent chance of another 6 months or so of more Shock and Awe.  Which they are furiously preparing for.

One might think that Trump’s biggest mistake was attacking Iran.

That’s not the biggest mistake. Because even if defeated, he would have withdrawn claiming victory and continued to strangle the country with sanctions.

No, the biggest mistake was Israel’s involvement, which clearly claimed responsibility for the worst war crimes.

This gives Iran the right to strike Israel in self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter. Without time limit.

Now, the duo is stuck. Trump can no longer simply withdraw because that would leave Israel virtually defenseless against Iranian missiles.

Israel couldn’t even bomb Iran without US refueling aircraft and American control of Arab airspace.
And it would quickly become uninhabitable if Iran targeted its vital infrastructure

They need an arrangement that protects Israel from Iranian retaliation.
What can they accept or promise in exchange for the non-destruction” of the unsinkable aircraft carrier?

The bets are on.

But for the moment, Trump is playing the magician, conjuring up imaginary threats in the hopes of using them as bargaining chips.

It doesn’t seem to be working too well.

Thank you, B, for sorting out and clarifying all the ceasefire to-ing and fro-ing on this, which is so hard to keep straight.

It is obvious that Washington and Israel are majorly interested in confusing everything so that the public can’t keep track of anything and will believe the most recent US/Israel statements.

The renaming nonsense is a part of this (kind of like a clothing accessory). The idea of Trump’s “renaming” the Strait of Hormuz as the Strait of Iran was likely inspired by Google’s removing names of Lebanese locations on Google Maps. Maybe Netty said to Trump, just rename whatever you like, wherever you like—Google Maps will go along with it. Kind of like renaming Palestine “Israel.” This renaming game seems trivial and childish, but IMO it is actually quite important from a PR POV, and the response should be pushback.

Next we know, Trump will want to name all of the children born in  Iran Donald or Melania—kind of like calling all Jews Sarah or Israel back in the day.

Pretty wild how quickly and significantly oil prices have responded. Down 10-12%/barrel at present.

What you are seeing are futures prices, what people think oil will cost weeks or months from now. Futures rise and fall with the transient hopes and fears of speculators. What matters is the spot price, i.e., the price for oil purchased and loaded today. That price is rarely advertised.

It will be the same in the USA-UK-IS
