Peter AU1, james, and others interested in Mali: here’s a short personal story that may help you arrive at an answer about the “smooth operator” you have both mentioned.
 
As an African who has lived in Africa for 77 years and visited 38 countries for agricultural purposes, I have been extremely privileged to meet a wide spectrum of society in each country I have visited—from those who laboured in orchards, to their field managers, farm owners, business and government officials, and university professors. I visited most of these countries on multiple occasions, usually for periods of at least two or more weeks. I don’t profess to know much, but in my line of work, I have to pay attention and listen carefully to solve problems.
 
About 18 months ago, I was asked to assist a businessman in Kenya to find a suitable site for a crop he wanted to grow. I knew very little about him but had been communicating with him for a few months beforehand and was satisfied I could trust him. When I arrived at his home in one of the plush suburbs of Nairobi to set off on our first trip to a farm in Mara—adjacent to the Maasai Mara reserve—he mentioned that someone would be joining us as a potential investor in his new venture. That person turned out to be a Danish-Kenyan (his parents had come to Nairobi as part of the Danish diplomatic corps when he was 5 years old, and they decided to stay). He had worked for the British Embassy for many years before starting his own consultancy and investment business.
 
As in most countries, visiting a farm entails long journeys of never less than an hour, and this one was more than six hours. A lot gets discussed on these drives, and that’s when you get to find out citizens’ views on local politics, world affairs, and differences between class groups—and it’s virtually similar in every country in Africa.
 
My host and the Dane were discussing a few local issues and problems, and that’s when he mentioned what he was doing for the British and Danish embassies when it came to political issues during local and state elections. They simply funded the two parties that stood the best chance of winning an election, which gave them political buy-in and influence regardless of which party won—and he was the one doing the deals for them. From their discussions of world events, there was little doubt that their sympathies lay with the Epstein class and that they would certainly not support the Russians if a need arose to protect their country from jihadists.

Why do you think it’s Russia’s responsibility to “defend” all African countries, and why do you think jihadist terrorism is the only danger facing these countries?
 
Did it occur to you that a country, with its own population and army, could defend itself and didn’t necessarily have to rely on a distant power that has its own problems to solve?
 
This paternalistic way of viewing others is quite far removed from the much-vaunted sovereignty and multipolarity.
 
Many of us Africans don’t aspire to be a battleground for the great powers, nor do we have only two options: Russia or the United States.
 
Note 1: Knowing Africa and Africans after 15 minutes of conversation is a persistent myth.
You should consider updating your knowledge.
 
Note 2: We are no more relying on foreign experts for agricultural projects for a long time, unless they are imposed on us by the institutions that fund them. We now have a lot of very good local and international experts among us.
 
Most individuals in our countries simply cannot afford these services at Western rates, let alone the expensive travel.

Not long back, I run onto a video interview of an old Syrian jew. The video itself appeared to be from around the 1990’s or earlier. 
He said the Isreali’s had been trying to convince the Syrian jews to move to Israel/Palestine. Then seven synagogues were bombed and jews killed, blame on the Arabs/Muslims, so the Syrian jews all moved to Israel.
He said he found out later that at least three of those synagogues were bombed by mossad/Israel.
 
The recent shootings at Bondi here in Australia was Mossad killing jews.

Apologies, I was using Russia as a metaphor because it was being used by commenters Peter Au1 and james trying to figure out the “smooth operator” and should have added that those who had government connections and business deals like the business owners I mentioned in Kenya – who still send their children to public schools in England – would object to “Russia” whereas the working class technicians in Egypt would welcome “Russia” if it came to defending their country. 
Decisions or opinions are different and dependent upon class, status and money. 
In Egypt the bigger farms are a sort of status symbol, owned by businessmen who don’t live on their farms and only visit from the city a few times every year. Their support for Sisi is strong, farm workers not so much.

FYI 
I have visited Egypt 17x’s over a 5 year period and spent a total of 42 weeks in the company of the technicians I mentioned  traversing the country with them every day I spent there including Saturdays and Sundays as well as meeting with farm owners and leaders of the agricultural association that had contracted me as a consultant and this goes for all the other countries in Africa in which I stayed a bit longer than 15 minutes; Ethiopia 5x’s, Kenya 3x’s, Tanzania, lived in Zimbabwe for a year, Botswana x4’s, Namibia 6x’s, Mozambique, Eswatini, Lesotho, Morocco x3’s. 
In addition I own a farm and have employed 8 Zimbabwean and Malawian political refugees since 2008.
 
So there you have the evidence. I know nothing about Africa or it’s people.

I would like to thank Peter AU 1, Unimperator and other MoA barflies for their tireless posting of news and news links about the failed Western-backed Islamist coup in Mali and its immediate aftermath. 
 
After seeing Sebgo’s comments, I would caution having too much or giving away too much information to this commenter, who appears increasingly to be a troll baiting us into saying too much while being unwilling to say where in Mali s/he (maybe it, as in being a bot) is based.
 
Among other things, not least denigrating the discipline and motivation of Malian troops in defending their country, Sebgo’s command of English appears very sophisticated for someone who has grown up in a former French colony and whose second or third language might be expected to be French.

The Mali Empire existed for seven centuries before being conquered and colonized.
 
Modern Mali gained its independence in 1960 and has since been fighting against powers that want to keep it dependent.
 
In 2013, faced with the threat of international terrorists threatening the capital, it was forces from neighboring countries, aided by France and Chad, that saved the day.
 
The number of troops deployed, the losses, and the costs of this intervention far exceeded anything Russia has done in Mali since Wagner’s arrival in 2020-2021.
And none of them asked to be paid like Wagner.
 
So, frankly, the rhetoric of “you wouldn’t exist without us” will convince no one.
 
Moreover, according to this logic, Mali should never have left the orbit of France, which “saved” it.

A lot of people here on MoA are in a contradictory position.
 
You claim to defend freedom, sovereignty, and a multipolar world.
 
But in practice, you say that all countries that are not major nuclear powers must renounce the sovereignty conferred upon them by the UN Charter to voluntarily become colonies and vassals of Russia or China.
 
Under the pretext that the Western Empire is threatening and aggressive, we
, “the rest of the world”, yet the majority, must cede all initiative not only to Russia, but also to its armed wing, the Wagner/Africa Corp mercenary military contingent.
 
We are well aware that the West is aggressive.
We are the ones who suffered slavery and colonization. We fought to obtain our independence, contrary to the propaganda that it was handed to us at the UN.
 
The wars in Algeria, Vietnam, and Mozambique are facts, to which lesser-known conflicts must be added.
 
We were willing to benefit from partnerships with wealthier countries like China and Russia to preserve our sovereignty. But if the price of this aid is said sovereignty, we will find other ways.
 
You don’t relinquish sovereignty to gain sovereignty.
 
We may be defeated because the predators are stronger. But certainly not through voluntary capitulation.
 
You believe that simply posting aggressive online statements, accusing anyone who doesn’t heed your call to surrender to the threat of being a pawn of the West, is enough to force Africans and Latin Americans to submit.

If Wagner/ Africa Corp and their cheerleaders behave worse than the french, it’s not excluded to make a casual alliance with them again.
 
Take the less evil to boot the worse out, then deal with the other.
 
There are things some are saying and doing here in the name of Russia or Wagner that the french no more dare say or do well before we ask them to leave.
 
Exceptionnalism, arrogance doesn’t hurt just when it comes from americans or french.

thanks jen.. i did follow the syria war conflict and do recall how isis was treated inside israel for their wounded… i do believe that bit of info was very true, and of course i believe that isis has been used as a batting ram to destroy countries like syria, and quite probable the sahel as well, not to mention their role in libya…. 
 
so is it possible to do a false flag in australia in an attempt to reach an outcome in favour of certain special interests? of course it is… and being a canuck, i haven’t been immersed in following it closely either, so i too appreciate those who have some insights to share here at moa on the deceptive nature of our world in 2026… thanks for your commentary and peters too on this topic fwiw..

The French in Mali were accompanied by Germans back then under a UN mission called MINUSMA. 1,500 krauts camped in Gao until 2023. They brought attack helos. MSM from the time quoted Bundeswehr hats as saying it finally became to dangerous as the Mali military junta wasn’t reliable enough. From Deutsche Welle:

 
Mali’s relations with many of its most important partners had been deteriorating since the miltary coup of May 2021, which was led by then-transitional Vice President, Colonel Assimi Goita, and drew international criticism. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) imposed sanctions on Bamako. Relations with France reached a low point. Paris had sent troops to Mali after the security crisis following the 2012 Tuareg rebellion, to help combat terrorism especially in the central and northern regions of the country, but soon was pressured by the new Malian leadership to withdraw its forces.
 
“I consider it normal for Mali’s government to assert its sovereignty in security matters. No one can dispute Mali’s right in this regard, because Mali is an independent state,” said Sahel expert Abdoulaye Sounaye from the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO) in Berlin. Sounaye, who also teaches at Abdou Moumouni University in Niamey, told DW that Mali had nevertheless proven incapable of ensuring the security of its citizens. This was especially true in the north, where Russian Wagner Group mercenaries operate. The withdrawal of MINUSMA did not bode well for security in Mali and neighboring Sahel countries. “There is a big risk that the military situation will escalate,” he said.
 
It is a worry shared by Ulf Laessing, head of the Sahel office of the German Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Bamako. “In the north and center, I have met many people who appreciate MINUSMA. Thousands found employment through the mission, which is also very active in the civilian sector, for instance, providing vocational training for the unemployed,” said Laessing, who has been in Bamako since November 2021. He was only able to travel in the country, particularly to the unstable north, because of the presence of peacekeepers. “MINUSMA worked with women, built wells, and engaged in healthcare initiatives. It had a wide range of projects that substituted for the state in regions where the state is relatively weak,” he said.
 
According to the expert, the Malian government will attempt to fill the vacuum left by MINUSMA with the help of its Russian partners. “The army has made significant acquisitions: new helicopters, jets, and other weapons. They will now try to replace MINUSMA. The armed groups, the jihadists, will certainly also try to exploit the vacuum for themselves,” he said.
