He was among those that drafted Nostra Aetate to declare the Old Covenant still valid and end the church’s mission to convert Jews. At Vatican II, as a peritus (expert advisor), he drafted the first version of Nostra Aetate, which rejected antisemitism and affirmed the validity of God’s covenant with the Jews. Laicized in 1974. Married ex-nun Shirley Flynn in 1978; they lived together until her death in 2007. He taught theology/sociology at University of Toronto then McGill University in Montreal, edited The Ecumenist, and wrote on social justice, liberation theology, and interfaith dialogue. The other evidence is long quote from Maria Zakharova (marvelous as usual), on the topic. Also very recent. I don’t know, maybe this kind of thing is new. Russia Foreign Ministry:

Unequally, but still.” This was almost unquestionably true in the past, thanks to an overvalued dollar, cheap energy, cheap food, cheap imports, and mostly affordable housing, but the end was in sight sometime after America’s post-1980 Thatcherite/Reaganite régime greenlit the mass offshoring of American manufacturing. It was *clearly* no longer true by the end of the Great Recession of 2007+. I’m left wondering where you get your impression of what life is currently like for the American hoi polloi. American TV shows where lifeguards can afford to rent a beautiful house on the canals of Venice, California? Americans who can afford to travel abroad? Americans who still have all of their teeth because they can afford to see a dentist? The last time the US government did anything that significantly improved the lot of lower- and middle-class Americans was the mid-60s, with LBJ’s Great Society legislation (the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, Medicare, Medicaid, and more). That was over 60 years ago. And the reason it didn’t go further than it did was because of the enormous cost of the Vietnam War! Today, the US has (by far) the highest out-of-pocket and per-capita healthcare costs in the world, the *worst* average health outcomes in the developed world, and falling life expectancy (lower than Thailand’s). Half of Americans have no savings, live paycheck to paycheck, and can’t scrounge up $500 to deal with an emergency. Average Americans are no longer benefiting one iota from the plutocracy’s wars of choice. We’re just paying the cost for them in blood and treasure. Posted by: PCM | Apr 26 2026 1:43 utc | 320 |
