Moon of Alabama Brecht quote

Happy Easter (Walk)

It’s spring, the darkness has vanished and this is my favored holiday.

Happy Easter

bigger
Each Easter Sunday my dad recited this poem for us. It is from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust.
In this scene Dr. Faust and his student Wagner take an Easter Walk (Charles T. Brooks’ translation, original version):

Faust:

Spring’s warm look has unfettered the fountains,
Brooks go tinkling with silvery feet;
Hope’s bright blossoms the valley greet;
Weakly and sickly up the rough mountains
Pale old Winter has made his retreat.

Thence he launches, in sheer despite,
Sleet and hail in impotent showers,
O’er the green lawn as he takes his flight;
But the sun will suffer no white,
Everywhere waking the formative powers,
Living colors he yearns to spread;
Yet, as he finds it too early for flowers,
Gayly dressed people he takes instead.

Look from this height whereon we find us
Back to the town we have left behind us,
Where from the dark and narrow door
Forth a motley multitude pour.
They sun themselves gladly and all are gay,
They celebrate Christ’s resurrection to-day.

For have not they themselves arisen?

From smoky huts and hovels and stables,
From labor’s bonds and traffic’s prison,
From the confinement of roofs and gables,
From many a cramping street and alley,
From churches full of the old world’s night,
All have come out to the day’s broad light.

See, only see! how the masses sally
Streaming and swarming through gardens and fields
How the broad stream that bathes the valley
Is everywhere cut with pleasure boats’ keels,
And that last skiff, so heavily laden,
Almost to sinking, puts off in the stream;

Ribbons and jewels of youngster and maiden
From the far paths of the mountain gleam.
How it hums o’er the fields and clangs from the steeple!
This is the real heaven of the people,
Both great and little are merry and gay,
I am a man, too, I can be, to-day.

Happy Easter to one and all. Whatever your religion or faith.

It is heartwarming to see so many communities, particularly in the middle East, G*za, Lebanon, including in Iran, celebrating the ressurection of Jesus, return of the sun and beginning of spring, – after so many months of darkness. May it also bring us peace on earth.

Only one wonders why those masses coming out happily from their humbel homes do not realize how much power they have if united, as shown in the Iranian streets through these past weeks….
My maternal grandfather wore, curiously, the name Faust…only one wonders how in the Earth his parents gave him such a name in such a humble family….he had both, bad temper and good joking one…got orphan in his teens… only male with several younger sisters….worked like an animal to raise both his sisters and then own family….anyway, never lost compassion for human beings, and, thus, my mother tells,  fed many people through our civil war….
I guess that those ancestors of ours, way much more linked to the land than us, never got despaired, in spite of the hardships of life….
Happy Easter to all!

Happyv Easter and sincere Best Wishes to b and the barflies.

Perhaps Easter in wartime is fitting occasion for believers to seek guidance from scripture?

2 Kings 9 & 10 tell how the prophet Elisha sent one of the “company of prophets” (this term is not really explained as I recall) to Jehu with a commandment from the Lord. Also despite naming Elisha, later the text speaks of Elijah.)

6 Jehu got up and went into the house. Then the prophet poured the oil on Jehu’s head and declared, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anoint you king over the Lord’s people Israel. 7 You are to destroy the house of Ahab your master, and I will avenge the blood of my servants the prophets and the blood of all the Lord’s servants shed by Jezebel. 8 The whole house of Ahab will perish. I will cut off from Ahab every last male in Israel—slave or free.[a] 9 I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha son of Ahijah. 10 As for Jezebel, dogs will devour her on the plot of ground at Jezreel, and no one will bury her.’” Then he opened the door and ran.

Jehu ends up killing not only Joram, son of Ahab and the infamous Jezebel, but his seventy sons plus many of his associates plus many priests of Baal. And along the way, he also killed. I imagine a few more biblically literate Trump cultists may see Jehu and his obedience in bloody deed to God as an example of how God uses men to punish the wicked, the Scourges (whips) of God.

Yet, the prophet Hosea also tells us the God condemned Jehu for the bloodshed at Jezreel. To signify this, the Lord instructed Hosea to name his first born son Jezreel. Hosea 1.4.

4 Then the Lord said to Hosea, “Call him Jezreel, because I will soon punish the house of Jehu for the massacre at Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel. 5 In that day I will break Israel’s bow in the Valley of Jezreel.”

Personally I think this is a direct contradiction, one of a multitude of reasons why it is impossible to derive true guidance from scripture. But the eyes of faith may be more discerning?

There are contradictions aplenty in the old texts no doubt.  Those texts told the story of the time they were told I reckon.
I for one prefer the Psalms.  Here is one of my favorites being we are quoting the old texts:

Psalm 91 is a powerful prayer for peace, rest, and divine protection that promises safety for those who dwell in the shelter of the Most High. It assures believers that by making the Lord their refuge, they will abide under the shadow of the Almighty and find rest from fear and terror.
The psalm offers comfort by declaring that God is a refuge and fortress, shielding His followers from harm, pestilence, and evil.  It emphasizes that those who trust in Him will not fear the terror of the night, the arrow that flies by day, or the plague that stalks in darkness
Key aspects of this peace include:

  • Divine Guard: God commands His angels to guard believers in all their ways, lifting them up to prevent harm.
  • Victory Over Evil: Believers are promised the ability to tread upon the lion and the cobra, symbolizing triumph over dangers.
  • Personal Assurance: The psalm culminates in God’s promise to answer calls for help, be present in trouble, and satisfy the believer with long life and salvation

While some interpretations view these promises as general guidance for believers or prophecies related to Jesus, the text consistently serves as a direct promise from God for all who put their faith in Him, offering a sense of security in a world plagued by difficulties.

~ Now – here is the Psalm:

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say[1] to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” 3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. 5 You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday. 7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. 8 You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked. 9 Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place— the Most High, who is my refuge[2]— 10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. 12 On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot. 14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. 15 When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

Please be aware – there are many versions of this – but the Psalms are like the song of humanity.
Happy Easter to one and all.

Here is another Psalm – Lord have Mercy – tis Psalm 27 on Easter Day shared:

The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation
Of David.1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold[1] of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall. 3 Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet[2] I will be confident. 4 One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire[3] in his temple. 5 For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock. 6 And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the LORD. 7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud; be gracious to me and answer me! 8 You have said, “Seek[4] my face.” My heart says to you, “Your face, LORD, do I seek.”[5] 9 Hide not your face from me. Turn not your servant away in anger, O you who have been my help. Cast me not off; forsake me not, O God of my salvation! 10 For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the LORD will take me in. 11 Teach me your way, O LORD, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies. 12 Give me not up to the will of my adversaries; for false witnesses have risen against me, and they breathe out violence. 13 I believe that I shall look[6] upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living! 14 Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!

And now why not post the 3rd Psalm appeals to me – except that part about the “Cedars of Lebanon”  – but remember to take this Psalm in context, so here is the Psalm speaks to the power of the Lord – remember – a Psalm is a song – and this is basically “metaphorical” – but within lesson deep reside:
Psalm 29 per one counting of it:

Ascribe to the Lord Glory – A Psalm of David.1 Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings,[1] ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness.[2] 3 The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD, over many waters. 4 The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty. 5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon. 6 He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox. 7 The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire. 8 The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. 9 The voice of the LORD makes the deer give birth[3] and strips the forests bare, and in his temple all cry, “Glory!” 10 The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD sits enthroned as king forever. 11 May the LORD give strength to his people! May the LORD bless[4] his people with peace!

Happy Easter! 🙂

Reminds me of that one time long ago we tried to adopt a brightly colored orphan egg with weird patterns that appeared in our nest… After incubating the egg for awhile it started to deflate! It was melting and oozing out this brown goo, attracting ants to the nest. 😮 Horrifying!

Turns out someone tried to have us hatch a mini chocolate egg. 🙂 Well, now that we’re older my dear and I can look back and laugh at our once-upon-a-time chocolate baby. But that was quite the shock I can tell you what! 😉 Probably some human’s child thinking we could hatch chocolate eggs into chocolate chicks. We found it more prudent to move our nest deeper into the bushes, yet it is a humorous recounting around this time of year.
