War On Iran: – Trump Cashes Out – Social Unrest – Arabs Joining The War – Iran Invasion

Yesterday, just minutes before President Trump’s most recent TACO, insiders placed bets on rising stocks and lower oil prices. They made a killing:

Traders placed $580mn in oil bets ahead of Donald Trump’s social media post on Iran talks (archived) – FT

Traders made bets worth half a billion dollars in the oil market about 15 minutes before Donald Trump’s post touting “productive” talks with Iran sent the price of crude tumbling and ignited volatility in other assets.

Roughly 6,200 Brent and West Texas Intermediate futures contracts changed hands between 6.49am and 6.50am New York time on Monday, just a quarter of an hour ahead of the US president’s post on Truth Social that there had in recent days been “productive conversations” with Tehran to end the war in Iran. The notional value of those trades was $580mn, according to FT calculations based on Bloomberg data.

Trading volumes for Brent and WTI leapt at the same time, 27 seconds before 6.50am. Futures tracking the S&P 500 share index jumped in price moments after the oil trade, with volumes also rising significantly during that timeframe.

It was not known whether one entity or several entities were behind Monday’s trades.

Trump’s next threat to Iran  – re-open the Strait of Hormuz to traffic or else – will most likely come on Friday, after the markets have close. It would not be beyond Trump to again play this week’s game and to offer another TACO shortly before next Monday’s opening.

In between the conflict continues. The U.S. continues to bomb Iran. As does Israel. Barrages of Iranian missile continue to strike the Zionist entity. There are vague reports that energy infrastructure in Iran has been hit. If that has indeed happened expect Iran to hit back at infrastructure in Arab Gulf region.

Oil prices are creeping up again. The conflict has not been defused by Trump’s TACO but threatens to intensify. The market interruptions it causes will be lengthy. I have warned that this will lead to public unrest first and foremost in those Asian states which have the biggest dependencies on Middle East oil. Here are the first signs of it:

Philippines Declares National Emergency Over High Fuel Prices (archived) – NY Times

Earlier on Tuesday, the Philippines’ Department of Energy said it had enough gasoline in reserve to last 53 days, enough diesel for 46 days and enough jet fuel for about 39 days. Diesel prices have doubled since the war began, surpassing 120 pesos, or $2, per liter.

Many government offices have switched to a four-day workweek to save energy, and Mr. Marcos has called on the public to car pool. The government has also been handing out 5,000 pesos each to tens of thousands of autorickshaw and jeepney drivers around Manila who are suffering from the higher prices.

Mr. Marcos is under intense pressure to deal with the situation. A coalition of transportation workers has called for mass protests around Manila, the capital, on Thursday and Friday about the price spike and what they consider inadequate measures by the government. On Tuesday, the Philippine Daily Inquirer, a major newspaper, published a column with the headline, “Nation on brink: This oil crisis may destroy everything we built.”

There are again reports about Arab Gulf States allegedly pushing Trump to extend the war. Other reports claim that the Gulf states are ready to join with their own forces. I recommend to take such reports with a boatload of salt.

Saudi Prince Is Said to Push Trump to Continue Iran War in Recent CallsNY Times

Gulf States Edge Toward Joining Fight Against Iran (archived) – WSJ
Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates get tougher on basing and finances

The U.S. would love to see the Arabs to join the fight. They would have to buy lots of expensive weapons and take the damage. This while the U.S. could skip out of the conflict (see Ukraine).

Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states are sitting in glass-houses. Their existences depends on a few hard to defend desalination plants, electricity generation facilities and energy export outlets. They are in range of short range missiles of which Iran has plenty. There are also the Houthi… .  If the Arab states were to actively join the bombing of Iran it would be their end.

The U.S. has ordered two Marine Expeditionary Units into the Gulf region. There are also alarms out for the 82nd Airborne Division, an ‘Immediate Response Force’ of some 3,000 soldiers which would add the the 1,600 Marines ground forces in the MEUs.

Pentagon Officials Weigh Deployment of Airborne Troops for Iran War (archived) – NY Times

Given the circumstances these are paltry forces usable only for very limited purposes. But it may well be the advance party of a much larger force that will take months to build.

There are still talks about taking Iran’s Kharg island, the main export station for Iranian oil. I did explain two weeks ago why that is no option. There are also three small islands in the middle of the Strait, Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunb, which are held by Iran but claimed by the Emirates:

Due to the depth of sea, oil tankers and big ships have to pass between Abu Musa and Greater and Lesser Tunbs, which makes these islands some of the most strategic points in the Persian Gulf.

These islands could be taken but, despite the above Wikipedia claim, their strategic value in this conflict is limited. Iranian reconnaissance drones, long range radar and anti-ship missiles have eroded their roles as interdiction stations. Taking those islands may have some PR value. But it would not lift the blockade of the Strait and the cost of holding them would soon become prohibitive.

Another potential target for an incursion into Iran could be its south-eastern city of Chabahar. It has a deep sea port and would be a good staring point for a larger invasion force. But Chabahar, with some 100,000 inhabitants, is a too big city to take with a mere 5,000 strong raiding force. Chabahar borders the Baluchistan region of Pakistan which makes any incursion of it politically complicate.

yes, the companies for profit will assure that

btw, market economy seems to work well (china chose that for a reason), but market power (and political protected) finance/ rentier giants , don’t .

As a reminder, the USS Gerald R. Ford experienced another “problem” during its Middle East deployment. It involved inoperable toilets. Sailors on the aircraft carrier told reporters that they “had to use buckets and basins to go to the toilet. ” The contents were thrown overboard.

These used to sell around here for about €20K new, now the price has almost doubled. The same happened with Lada Nivas, UAZ Hunters and GAZ GAZelles/Sobols. Import from Russia has been banned, the new ones come from Kazakhstan now AFAIK to circumvent the ban. One can still find some new old stock Buchankas from former army reserves for cheaper. Great for conversion to LPG.

By choosing figures who are more known for being TV personalities or fierce loyalists than for deep strategic brains, Trump ensures:

  • There is no Adult in the Room (like a Mattis or Tillerson from his first term) to tell him No.
  • These “Yes-Men” are expendable. If the public turns on the war, it’s much easier to fire a dumb secretary than to admit the President’s own America First doctrine failed.

A U.S. landing in Iran would be Vietnam on steroids. The Gulf states would be collateral damage—their glass cities would be levelled by Iranian missiles the moment the first American boot hit Iranian soil. If this is happening, it’s not a plan; it’s a desperation move by a White House that has run out of options and is trying to win a war that can’t be won with conventional force.

By framing the Iran escalation as Hegseth’s bold plan or military advice, Trump creates a firebreak. If the war turns into a meat grinder or oil hits $200, he can sack Hegseth, claim he was misled by the generals/Pentagon, and then play the role of the Peacemaker who swoops in to end the war he actually started.

Doctorow is useless. The ideas advanced by CrazyCanuck and his ilk represent the desperate hope of the Ziomericans, who hope to break the back channels Russia has with the gulf states. Theyre whispering ‘look, the Americans cannot even protect you’. America is desperate to push Russian whisperers away. Russia, being a global superpower, is managing its interests and has successfully defended its country against the mulitpronged attack by the Ziomericans and their proxy forces. Russia and China and Iran appear to the unbiased observer to be coordinating their actions.

I have two Peugot bikes from my grandfather. One is the mass market Trophie de France (sp?) and the other is the chromoly or aluminum lighter version UO9 I think. Both are 10 speed with Mafac or simplex components. Impossible to find like new replacements so during the early 90s when I rode road bikes regularly. Ended up swapping a bunch of Japanese parts onto the lower end one. Worked fine at the time. Switched to straight bar mtn bikes when Nashbar marketed them thru mail order. Good value. Mormon missionaries used to stop me to ask about them when they were still sporting U bar 10spds. Now I am away from any hills/mtns but i have two sets of 26″ rims/tires for each active bike. Cable disc brakes. Small adjustment switching between fat and thin knobbies or snooth road versions. Ebay was once a decent source for Peugot replacement stuff but original equipment is heavier and less efficient anyway. And yeah most people I know with bikes couldn’t take a link out of a chain let alone disassemble and repack crank or freewheel bearings.

There’s another perspective on this. Large majority there are Baloch people, Sunni Muslims. If special forces and intelligence have done their prep work over the years, they could have made agreements with those who can keep the population in control while they are promised some independence. Not sure if Pakistan would like that unless they’d get a slice. But what am I saying. Preparation, intelligence, planning, strategy. There are so many now who are probably way better sourced and savvy who have simply overtaken Doctorow.

Sure I do. I once had a 7-speed alu Peugeot that was missing its levers, but I could manually switch it between two of its gears (5 and 6). After I while I learned to do it with my foot while riding it. Then I adjusted to leave it permanently in 7, and stripped everything else that I deemed unnecessary. It was ideal for the city; but I was obviously younger then, my current one has baskets front and rear. One day  it was gone, but I found it a few weeks later in front of the neighborhood bar where I had apparently forgotten it. A while later the cops stopped me and deemed it unsafe; I was obliged to bring in prove of its scrapping. I left it unlocked, but nobody took it, so when the day came I went to the police station and reported it got stolen anyway. The cops just sighed. I was a bike messenger for 13 years in the Northeast US. Rode in all weather, extreme heat, extreme cold, snow, rain, freezing rain, sleet, you name it. My number one rule for the bike was as few moving parts as necessary. Track racing bikes are the best for this. No brakes, no gears, just one single speed fixed to the back wheel. Only moving parts are the bottom bracket, the headset, and the hubs. Easy to ride, easy to fix. Stay on the bikes, brothers!

🇹🇭🇮🇷⚡– Thai oil tanker safely crosses Strait of Hormuz after Iran coordination.

A Thai oil tanker has safely navigated the Strait of Hormuz after diplomatic coordination between Thailand and Iran, and was not required to pay to bypass the blockade, a Thai official and the vessel’s owning oil company announced today.

The tanker, owned by Bangchak Corporation, crossed the key waterway on Monday following successful discussions between Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow and Iran’s ambassador to Thailand.

“I requested that if Thai ships need to pass through the strait, could they assist in ensuring safe passage?” Sihasak told reporters late on Tuesday.

“They responded that they would take care of it and asked us to provide the names of the vessels that would be transiting.”

Yeah that’s why fixies got so popular. Almost a meme for hipsters in cities mostly without major hills or mtns. Don’t know what delivery guys did in SF (VERY hilly) but I think those unique places are where the internal 3 speeds and electric assist bikes may have been launched. I haven’t done nearly as many miles as a courier and can fix bikes myself so I’ve always had typical 10-21 speed mtn hardback frames since the light ones became affordable in the mid or late 90s Never owned a full suspension but the suspension fork is a must for recreational mtn biking in actual mtns. with steep hills and rocky terrain. I should clarify I never use the old Peugots anymore.

My city had a licensing program for bike messengers. We had to wear numbers on our bags and have a license plate on the bike. The cops would come out and bust us for not wearing the numbers. That is, until the hipsters all started looking like messengers. Then all of a sudden they’re pulling over students who have never delivered a package in their lives. It forced the cops to stop harassing us, which was nice. But yeah, in general, they ruined track bikes. Acting like ‘bike messenger’ is a subculture instead of just a job. I never got hired to be a punk rocker!

These days I’m riding a 27-speed. It’s slow and heavy, but I still find myself flipping into messenger mode the second I get on it. Must get there (even if there is nowhere in particular) as soon as possible and all slowpokes must eat my dust. It’s hard to just relax on the bike now. I’m probably gonna lay off this summer and try to distance myself from that mindset before really getting back into it

Here in the UK, people who hold a placard are deemed to be ‘terrorists’ while the IDF, who torture a baby with lit cigarettes in front of the father in order to try to get a confession and kill tens of thousands of children in Gaza, are not.
How did the UK government’s priorities get so badly skewed, with no realistically better alternative for voters to choose? Is the pro-Israel lobby really powerful enough to cause the government to totally invert morality? Certainly looks that way.

About a quarter of inhabitants of Turkey have blue or grey eyes. In Turkey they are referred to as “coloured” eyes, as brown eyes are considered the norm.

Good morning barflies…..I see none have reported Iran condition for ending the war

Iran lays out five specific conditions under which Iran would agree to end the war, via PressTV. These include:

1. A complete halt to “aggression and assassinations” by the enemy.
2. The establishment of concrete mechanisms to ensure that the war is not reimposed on the Islamic Republic.
3. Guaranteed and clearly defined payment of war damages and reparations.
4. The conclusion of the war across all fronts and for all resistance groups involved throughout the region
5. International recognition and guarantees regarding Iran’s sovereign right to exercise authority over the Strait of Hormuz.

“With crude oil, you have a global market and a global price. With gas, you don’t because markets are, to a greater extent, regionalized,” Munton said.

“The best example is [LNG] prices haven’t really budged in the United States. They’re still pretty weak, in the $3 per MMBtu [1 million British thermal units] range, but internationally, they’ve spiked. That’s a reflection of the differences.”

Medlock said, “This may seem counterintuitive, but since the United States is a net exporter of natural gas, the only way events in the Persian Gulf can impact price in the United States is by rapidly increasing demand for U.S. LNG exports.”

at the moment, there is lots of organizing going on. people standing in line for hours at airports, for example. i had to wait an hour to get thru Starbucks today! (j/k, that’s rich people’s problems.)

it’s all Brownian motion, within the machine. people have a Platonic ideal of what “organization” looks like. but what condition is the social body in?

doing nothing is the only thing that matters. a society wherein everyone competes with everyone else over who gets to use the bathroom is long dead. who gets enough sleep?

but let’s keep kicking that malnourished diseased corpse, hit it over the head with some Grundrisse, maybe it’ll get organized. or maybe it’ll try to get a job at Amazon.

I was made aware of Ernst Jünger several years ago in a presentation at sott.net.  So I got the book “Forest Walker” and read a bit daily in the morning usually cause the book was left in the bathroom.  The translation was very well done and Herr Jünger certainly was ahead of his time.  Metaphorically “walking in the forest” just like the “voter” in Jünger’s work requires “soul-searching” that often can be a lonely journey when one chooses NOT to participate in “group-think” ideology.
