War On Iran: – Refineries Hit – Oil Passage Toll To Pay For Iranian Damage

Iran has, as promised yesterday, responded to the USraeli attack on its energy installations by hitting refineries and gas facilities in several Persian Gulf countries.

Qatar spoke of ‘extensive damage’ to its gas liquefaction facilities caused by an Iranian attack. Saudi Arabia claimed that the attack was defeated but that a drone had hit its SAMREF refinery near Yanbu on its western coast. Kuwait reported fires at two of its three refineries, Bahrain and the UAE did not comment but people living there report of explosions, fires and damage.

Several missiles and drones hit Israel. It has by now come under a sustained attack with air alarms going off nearly every hour. This afternoon the BAZAN oil refinery in Haifa got hit.

The damage from the continuing U.S. and Israeli bombing campaign in Iran is also quite considerable. The Israeli plan is to destroy all of Iran’s capabilities to the extend that rebuilding will become excessively expensive.

But Iran has already planned for this. It has found a way to pay for rebuilding its state. As it is, and will likely stay, in control of the Strait of Hormuz it can ask for payments in exchange for providing safe passage.

Lloyd’s List reports:

Iran establishes ‘safe’ shipping corridor for approved and paid for transits

AT LEAST one tanker operator is understood to have paid a fee to Iran to transit the Strait of Hormuz while several other tankers have passed following Iranian vetting and diplomatic interventions, according to several well-placed sources with direct knowledge of the transits.

Multiple governments including India, Pakistan, Iraq, Malaysia and China are all understood to be discussing vessel transit plans directly with Tehran, where officials within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have established a nascent ship registration system for “approved” vessels to agree safe passage.

At least nine ships have now exited the strait via the “safe” corridor that routes ships through Iranian territorial waters via Iran’s Larak Island, which is used by the IRGC Navy and port authority to assess visual confirmation of the vessels.

bigger
The picture on the left shows the normal traffic route through the Strait while the picture on the right shows (except for the purple ship) the passing on the controlled route north of Larak Island.

Without the war and without the blockade of the Strait crude oil prices would hover around $60 bbl instead of the current $100-120 bbl (soon to be $200 bbl). When Iran will finally agree to an end of the war – months if not years from now – one of its conditions might be a surcharge of $10 bbl for any tanker passing the Strait. This would come, for a limited time, on top of the $60 bbl peace-level market price. A moderate toll when one considers the cost of today’s barrels. This while providing a significant income of some $50-100 million per day for Iran. It would help to recuperated the money needed to repair any war damage.

The U.S., if it will have any say in this, might well agree to that condition.

Currently Iran has some 140 million barrels of crude oil sitting in floating storage – i.e. on old rented tankers anchoring somewhere. That oil was hard to sell as it was under U.S. sanctions.

The U.S. is currently considering to lift those sanctions to provide more oil to the global markets and to thereby lower its price. As U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced:

In the coming days, we may unsanction the Iranian oil that’s on the water. It’s about 140 million barrels, so depending how you count it, that’s 10 days to 2 weeks of supply, that the Iranians had been pushing out, that would have all gone to China. In essence, we’d be using the Iranian barrels against the Iranians to keep the price down for the next 10 or 14 days, as we continue this campaign. So, we have lots of levers.

The U.S. wasn’t willing to lift those sanctions during peace talks with Iran. But seeing the the dearth of oil under war conditions and high prices it suddenly allows that to happen.

How that would be ‘against the Iranians’ when they can sell their parked oil at $100 bbl exceeds my understanding.

Added:

The U.S. seems to have run out of stand-off ammunition. F-35 fighters were ordered into Iranian air space and at least one got damaged. This confirms that air superiority over Iran has not been achieved (yet).

Thanks for your sensible reply. Iran has made great use of decoys and the radar spoofers would be a prime example. IMO, Iran also had excellent intel on the supply of enemy stand-off munitions and AD/ABM interceptors and knew a point would arrive when they would run very low or be used 100%. Thus, my Q about the carriers and their air wings or were their armories looted to provide for the attack and thus they’re unarmed–useless? Hegseth has just begged for $200 Billion in supplemental funding but didn’t specify why/for what. We know the arms manufacturers can’t increase production because of supply chain constraints. It appears the better logistically supplied side will be the winner, at currently that’s Iran.

Today I discovered that KSA and Pakistan have a mutual defence pact: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic_Mutual_Defence_Agreement

I don’t know what this means, other than in theory it could be used as a lever to get a route for invasion, given that Iran has now attacked KSA directly (at least, i think they have).

If USA is mad enough to invade from the west or the Gulf, then a second front on the Pakistan border would make life difficult. I can’t imgine USA being able to invade Iran via Pakistan (6 months of Desert Storm prepositioning buildup in the oh-so-welcoming nation of Pakistan?) , but would the Pakistani government move on their own if pressured? How long would the “government” last if they did? Seems too silly to consider.

Times are crazy enough as it is, but if Iran keeps blowing up GCC oil installations, something weird might happen. Pundits seem to be suggesting that the USA will now put boots on the ground, mainly for internal US political reasons. I’m not a pundit, so I couldn’t say.

Other points – if energy is linked to GDP (which it must be), then apparently a 20% reduction in energy = 20% reduction in worldwide gdp – 1930s depression equivalent. Also, I estimate that the jnterrupted gulf oil sales means something like $1.5billion per day of dollars are not being recycled immediately back into theUS  stock market, bonds and AI bubbles. That may be noticed soon.

NATO is a military hierarchy, the USA commands it, it follows military discipline, Euroland by design has developed into the 4th Reich, why would the USA lose its stranglehold on 4th Reich it so carefully crafted these last 80 years? If any country leaves NATO the USA will be the last to do so, but that’s not going to happen soon, my guess it will open happen out of the rubble of Eurolandia. I hope I’m wrong.

Trump’s bluster and threats serve to reinforce USA control, it gives the 4th Reich ruling quislings a way to motivate their populations to remain staunch behind the USA, in their heavily propagandized infantilized minds the USA is the only power that can truly protect them, a lot more so than their own wishy-wash, limp wristed, metrosexual leadership ever can.

Every so often I have lunch or coffee with normies, from the bourgeoisie or professional managerial class as it’s referred to in these class unconscious times, every last one of them is scared of their own shadow, they don’t like that Trump has stripped away the veneer of civility and manners that they were able to hide behind all these decades, but they’ll go down with the Empire as long as they believe it protects them form all boogyman, demons, Putins, Kims, Xis, and Ayatollah lurking around in the dark corners of their mind.

I fully support Iran’s claim to reparations but a toll booth is a silly way to do it.  Tolls impose costs on the wrong party.  Tolls are also indefinite and open ended.

Far better reparations would be absolute, targeted and negotiated by treaty.  A treaty that would have to be approved by the Senate of the United States as well as the other parties that chose to participate in a War of Aggression against Iran.

The S-300PMU-2 “Favorit” (SA-20B Gargoyle) has limited capability to detect and effectively engage the F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter, due to the F-35’s very low radar cross-section (RCS), typically estimated in the range of 0.001 to 0.005 m² (frontal aspect, clean configuration).

That backfired “biggly” and now the entire world is going to suffer for it.

Trade with the enemy during war is not an uncommon phenomenon in history. It happened in the American Civil War.  Some have claimed that Nathaniel Banks didn’t advance up the Mississippi to campaign against Port Hudson. But that he took off up the Red River valley in Arkansas in pursuit of cotton. The US according to later reports  carried out trade with Nazi Germany via neutral Spain.  Fueling Fascism: The Secret History of How Texaco Supplied Oil to Fascists in Spain | Democracy Now!  See also Business collaboration with Nazi Germany – Wikipedia

The historical precedents suggest the trade is usually limited. Most of all, it never stops the war. If our host means to suggest Trump et al. are effectively surrendering, I think this is quite premature.

@112,
I don’t expect either Turkey or Pakistan to join any war against Iran. Not only because Iran is still a well defended country with its terrain but also because it fallout of the war will inevitably reach their own country considering the proximity of the war. For Pakistan, it would mean war with an adversary with many drones, a large number of Shia muslims that are sympathetic to Iran but also a fairly large number of Sunni Muslims as well.
They would also have to deal with Afghanistan to the north. For Turkey its more or less the same, but even more so considering that a war between them and Iran will weaken them in a future potential fight with Israel in Syria or other places. Both of these country have fairly decent relations with the current government in Tehran, so no reason to join a useless & destructive war.
The chances for US to put a few hundred thousand troops in either of these countries will take a long time, be massively unpopular in both US and either of these 2 countries. So also close to 0.
What remains is indeed:
– a potential operation to capture that small island (a big propaganda victory)
– a potential attack on the coast close to Hormuz
– continue the bombing until it becomes more expensive than its worth to continue the fight. We might reach that point soon, but it remains to be seen if Iran would agree to something like a ceasefire. I doubt US would offer more considering the unhinge people running this country.

A question I have: Why are the remaining carriers–eight out of ten–sitting at dock stateside when logic would dictate they be employed in this war? The only answer I have is there’re some deficits or deficiencies keeping them at anchor, or the issue(s) might be with their escorts. Wilkerson has opined it’s the lack of crews.
Posted by: karlof1 | Mar 19 2026 17:25 utc | 54

There was a period in 1942/3 2hen the US Navy had only one operational carrier left in the Pacific. They had to borrow one from the Royal Navy (USS Robin).  I guess cathartic events like that leave an institutional memory.

Add into that the sheer incompetent lack of planning, shortage of crews and the fact that two of the three so far deployed have ‘retired hurt’ to put it nicely and it is difficult to see much in the way of reinforcement.

Besides, Iranian missile reach keeps them at such a standoff that they need in-air refuelling to accomplish any mission, so they are effectively redundant.

Stand off weapons on carrier strike groups
Posted by: karlof1 | Mar 19 2026 18:13 utc | 104

My understanding is that the US doesn’t have much more Tomahawks (and similar) than fit into all the ships – some reserves the 5th fleet had in Bahrein may have been destroyed when Iran hit 2 logistic barges in the very first days. Diego Garcia is not a naval base. Next base either in Europe or Japan/South Korea/Hawaii. The destroyers of both CSG (Lincoln, Ford) should be empty by now, with no refilling option at least not for all of them. What they can do is exchange these single-use-ships with hitherto unused destroyers of the other fleets.

The situation with stand off weapons for the carrier air wing should be similar, may be with a better chance of refilling at least once. The carrier probably has a certain amount of dumb bombs left. But not many heroic pilots keen of delivering them with a 50/50 success chance of return.

And Israel has returned to bombing nearby with dumb bombs (having run out of stand off missiles as well), not risking any shooting back – for how long, until some AD will have made it to the Lebanon?

There is no way, the US could produce the amount of ammo desired anytime soon.

Best video posted earlier shows no damage to the refinery.  Someone reporting a power plant got hit.  Note the major equipment is completely fine and there is no protective fire water being sprayed on the equipment or pipe racks.  Which means the refinery is fine.

Iran Always Chickens Out.  IACO.  They smashed the Qatar facility big time, but do some sort of a “restrained” attack against the aggressor that attacked South Pars, Israel.  The refinery wasn’t even hit.  The power plants across Israel are still up.  If they don’t destroy Israel, then Iran will lose.  Because Israel/AIPAC controls the US.
Also confirms back door talks because there was a “requested de-escalation”, which IACO has now complied with, AGAIN, even though Israel is escalating.
“Look Squirrel!!!” as people obsess over ONE fight plane damaged.  Meanwhile SOMETHING is keeping Iran from winning this war, and SOMETHING has them in talks to “de-escalate”, which has HUGE STRATEGIC ramifications.

Considering Israel is working on an LNG export project and a pipeline through their puppet straight of Syria, Iran’s attack on Qatar helps ISRAEL strategically.  Israel attacks South Par, and IACO doesn’t attack the Leviathan gas complex?  Strategically Israel just benefited greatly as there is now a huge demand for their future LNG shipments.

American F-35 fighter makes emergency landing at US base in Middle East

An American F-35 aircraft had to make an emergency landing at a U.S. air base in the Middle East after it was struck by what was thought to have been Iranian fire.

“We are aware of reports that a U.S. F-35 aircraft conducted an emergency landing at a regional U.S. air base after flying a combat mission over Iran. The aircraft landed safely, and the pilot is in stable condition,” CENTCOM spokesman Capt. Tim Hawkins told the Washington Examiner. “The incident is under investigation.”

Hegseth acknowledged on Thursday that Iran “will still shoot” at U.S. troops even though their capacity to do so has been greatly diminished.

“We’ve hit hundreds of their defense industrial bases directly; their ability to manufacture new ballistic missiles has probably taken the hardest hit of all. Ballistic missile attacks against our forces, down 90% since the start of the conflict,” he said. “Same with one-way attack [unmanned aerial vehicles], think kamikaze drones, down 90%. Now the Iranians will still shoot, we know that, but they would shoot a lot more if they could, but they can’t.”

Killer opinion This means Iran has a working radar detecting the stealth f35 from some angles where it was less stealthy deep within Iranian territory and damaged it.

RE S300 – absolute stealth does not exist. Very old radars can detect anomalies indicating the presence of an aircraft while being unable to acquire a lock on the target.

Certain manoeuvres can blow your own cover, you can still be eye-balled and infra-red and active radar seeking interceptors  are effective.

I have no idea why they think it was a strike by S300 unless they were looking at the frequency signature at the time.

And my information is about 20+ years out of date.

Thanks for your reply. IMO, Hegseth has far too much hubris and lack of education to have any sort of ” institutional memory.” When Trump first intoned “Giant Armada,” my mind thought of the vast fleet employed in the Battle of Okinawa; but when it was revealed that just one carrier would be employed, a big ? loomed in my mind as to the planning. And now that we know the decision was made in late December 2025, the choice of one at the outset makes zero sense, although I’m glad the miscalculation was made.

The Raw Facts of the 1953 Iran Coup

  • The Motive: Oil and Greed. In 1951, Iran’s democratically elected Prime Minister, Mohammad Mossadegh, moved to nationalize the Iranian oil industry. At the time, it was controlled by the British-owned Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (now BP), which was siphoning off the vast majority of the profits while Iranians lived in poverty.
  • The “Negotiation” Sham: The U.S. and Britain tried to pressure Mossadegh into a deal that would keep the oil in Western hands. When he refused to back down on Iranian sovereignty, the CIA and MI6 stopped negotiating and started plotting his removal.
  • Buying a Revolution: The CIA, led by Kermit Roosevelt Jr., went into Tehran with suitcases full of cash. They literally hired mobs to protest, bribed newspaper editors to spread propaganda, and paid off military officers to turn against the government.
  • The Overthrow: After an initial failure, the U.S.-backed forces succeeded in a second attempt. They arrested Mossadegh, tried him for treason, and placed him under house arrest for the rest of his life until he died in 1967.
  • The Result: Dictatorship. The U.S. re-installed the Shah (Mohammad Reza Pahlavi) as an absolute monarch. He ruled with a brutal secret police force (SAVAK) that tortured and killed dissidents for 26 years, all while U.S. oil companies took a 40% stake in Iran’s oil.

@54 Karl. “A question I have: Why are the remaining carriers–eight out of ten–sitting at dock stateside when logic would dictate they be employed in this war?”
The US wore out 4 carriers fighting AnsarAllah.
It can take a year and a half to refit a carrier.  All those carriers are being repaired after war conditions in Yemen. Lack of shipyards and qualified ship workers may delay repairs even longer.
USS Truman and USS Stennis are in for re fueling which can take 5 years.  Stennis was due out this year but has been delayed.
USS Nimitz was due for the scrap yard but its service life has been extended somehow.
USS Ford and USS Lincoln? Fires and “other problems”??
USS Bush ? May be on the way to Mid East.
As you can see America is running out of Carriers fit for Deployment.
Question I have is. Why did Trump go to war with America sooo Weak.

Iran Demands Clarification from Germany on Ramstein
Update, 6:36 p.m.: The Iranian ambassador to Germany, Majid Nili, has demanded a “clarification” from the German government regarding the US use of the Ramstein Air Base for the war against Iran. The role of the military base in Rhineland-Palatinate is still “officially unclear” to Tehran, Nili told the AFP news agency in Berlin on Thursday. “So far, we have received no answer.”
“We have asked them for a clarification or explanation regarding the role of Ramstein,” Nili said. The ambassador referred in this context to a UN resolution concerning the use of a state’s territory or airspace by another state. According to this resolution, that state would be “complicit in the attack or aggression,” the ambassador said. “We don’t yet know whether this applies to Ramstein or not.”

“Stealth” has some military use (especially against radar seeker missiles). But it is totally overblown by marketing as “stealth” was identified as the next thing to sell overpriced toys to generals and politicians.

It can be seen. It can be heard. Place some observers at 3000 m asl in the Zagros mountains every 10 km and not a single plane will escape human eyes and ears – without any technical finesse.

Western “Stealth” technology is focused on cm … dm wavelength radars. Easy solution to counter that – use a cheap meter radar, like the Soviet P-18 (low resolution) and combine it with a cm radar. By combining them you get stuff like the Russian Nebo radar. The m-radar works as discriminator, once it sees something it tells the cm-radar “look here” by lowering the noise-signal-threshold for this certain region. This can easily be done by the Iranian themselves.

But Iran has already planned for this. It has found a way to pay for rebuilding its state. As it is, and will likely stay, in control of the Strait of Hormuz it can ask for payments in exchange for providing safe passage.

This is an absolute genius, not one dreamt up during afternoon tea, but gamed-out and strategised ling in advance.
I’m sure those nations that do negotiate a passage will be happy to pay a slight premium, better that than those unfriendly ones for whom no premium will now be enough to secure supplies. Go Persia.

Then there’s the BRI which was created well before 2022 to recycle their hoard of dollar lucre, and what got them into the USA’s gunsight in the first place, 300ys of western capital accumulation flowing in the “wrong” direction and into the “wrong” hands. @Norwegian et al

The five year jail for filming in “Israel” was spoken of as ‘project’ in the media I read, and fact checking says there is no proof a law was enacted, but without full verification. Some laws might be under military jurisdiction also.

However confiscation of private equipment and arrest are documented for citizens filming impact sites, and I think there is no clear line between social media and journalism in law, i.e. charges of endangerment would seem to apply to both. For accredited journalists the following is an example:

https://www.thelevantfiles.org/2026/03/blackout-at-impact-site-how-israel-is.html

There are a few channels on Telegram that I am confident are providing authentic imagery. Some filmed by themselves or those they trust, for example. Even those are limited, maybe filming half or less of missile entry and only a small fraction of impacts. Objects like the refinery in Haifa are more easily filmed for being visible from distance, as well as not possible for “Israel” to contain.

So it’s a mixed picture. Interestingly, I just spent an hour browsing for the actual laws in force, and all the google and duckgo results presented were about arrests in UAE, Iran and other countries, even though I explicitly framed the search for “Israel” .

That is censorship in action for you, not even info on what is/not permitted for the public because ‘social media restriction does not exist’ and ‘snopes thinks maybe so also’

@150,
Trump’s expected result is regime-change. That’s their main goal, but indeed .. if that doesn’t happen (which most probably will not happen currently), they will do what US has done over many conflicts (utter destruction in Iran and chaos in a region far from their homeland). It remains to be seen if US has the arms to bomb for years as Russia currently does in Ukraine.
Which is why, I’m not buying the whole “boots on the ground” bullshit.
What will happen next is crucial for Iran and the whole Global South/Multipolar whatever. If Iran doesn’t get any proper security guarantees and subsequently economic assistance after the war, the current government will collapse in time (doesn’t matter if its 1-2-3 years). That’s the main problem with the current ruled economic order run by US & European lackeys. That is my main beef with Global South darling – BRICS, which is slow, inefficient and way to keen on keeping the current order of things just for individual business reasons.
This might be the last chance for these GS nations to actually make a stand and understand that the current world needs a proper reset not just get a seat at the table (looking at you India, Brazil).
The economic control that US/EU has is the main reason why UKR keeps fighting (because they know that they have the financial backing and hope that their country will get money once the war is over to rebuild) even though their country is basically on life support for quite some time. Iran doesn’t really have this luxury.
