To cope with the rising gas prices, the German government has forbidden gas stations from raising the price of fuel more than once/day.They did not forbid gas stations to lower the price making it easy to go around this restriction.

The majority of Hezbollah’s rocket fire, including the ~200 fired yesterday, are being launched from ridges located south and east of Nabatiyeh.

From these distances, Hezbollah is firing the 122mm Arash-4 (BM-21) and 220mm Fadi-1s rockets. They have effective firing ranges of 45km and 70km, respectively.

These firing positions are sandwiched between the Litani and Zahrani Rivers, enough to reach Israeli border towns, the Lower and Upper Galilee (including Safed and Tiberias), and even Haifa in edge cases.

Almas-3/4 ATGMs are being launched east of Nabatiyeh and have a maximum range of 16km, reaching all the way to certain border towns. So while “neutralizing” anything south of the Litani would create a ~25km buffer zone protecting the western side of the border;

1) It wouldn’t be sufficient for the eastern side of the border where the Galilee Panhandle and Golan Heights behave as a sort of salient,

2) It wouldn’t suppress all the fire from the ridges north of the Litani.

So now Israel wants to evacuate everything south of the Zahrani Rivers so they can strike these areas more forcefully. The evacuation orders may eventually expand to the Sayniq and Awali Rivers.

The Russian rep Vassily Nebenzia to the UN has replied regarding their vote …
https://russiaun.ru/en/news/411032026

Mr. President,
The Russian Federation abstained in the vote on the draft resolution tabled by Bahrain because it is extremely unbalanced and does not serve the purposes of maintaining international peace and security.
I would like to make it clear right away: we do understand and regret the situation in which the Middle East countries find themselves today. Moreover, Russia deems unacceptable any strikes on the territory of Arab States in the Persian Gulf, in particular on civilian infrastructure there. From the very outset, our country’s leadership, and personally President Putin, has got into efforts to de-escalate the situation and stop the bloodshed both in Iran and around it.
However, it would be impossible and unfair to talk about attacks on countries in the region without regard for the root causes of the current escalation, namely the aggression of the US and Israel against Iran.
To our deep regret, the resolution that has just been adopted is framed precisely in such a biased and one-sided tone. It muddles up the cause and effect. If someone who is not well versed in international affairs reads this resolution, they will inevitably get the impression that Tehran, willingly and out of malice, conducted an unprovoked attack on Arab countries. At the same time, the attacks against the territory of Iran itself, let alone those who are behind them and carrying them out, are not only not condemned in the document but simply left out. And the Security Council has just signed off on this.
Nor does the document mention the fact that the authorities in Tehran have repeatedly emphasized that their retaliatory actions are directed not against the countries in the region, but against US military facilities and infrastructure located on their territory, and are legitimate targets within Iran’s right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
We can’t but note that Washington, through its aggressive actions, has essentially set up the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The US ignored the repeated requests of Arab States not to use their territory to conduct military operations against Iran. According to the information we receive from open sources, the US is actively using its permanent military bases for this purpose, first and foremost those deployed in the monarchies of the Persian Gulf: and these bases are being used not for defensive or reconnaissance purposes, but rather for offensive ones. On February 28, the official website of the US Central Command (CENTCOM), citing its head Adm. Brad Cooper, reported that high-precision weapons had been launched against Iranian territory not only from air and sea, but also from land. Obviously, this could only be the reference to the territory of countries neighboring Iran.
It is no secret for anyone that the US base in Bahrain is the headquarters and the “nerve center” of the US Fifth Fleet, which is the main strike force against Iran. The US Prince Sultan air base in Saudi Arabia is the main maintenance point for the US air force in the region. The largest military air base, Al Udeid, located in Qatar, could be used not only as a major element of the US and NATO global air defense system, but also for deploying strike fighters, bombers, and refueling planes, as well as for suppressing air defense and target acquisition. The Al Dhafra base in the UAE is also very suitable for these purposes and for gathering intelligence. A significant role in military operations against Iran is also being played by US bases in Kuwait, Jordan, and Iraq. All of this was mentioned by Iran when justifying its strikes on US military facilities in Arab countries.
The unconditional imperative to protect civilians and infrastructure in the current conflict is also presented in the adopted resolution in a very one-sided manner. Strikes targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure are unacceptable under any circumstances and in any country – be it Iran, Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, or Israel. However, the GCC draft suggests that no one has ever attacked the civilian population of Iran. As if there had been no horrific attack on a girls’ school in Minab, which killed nearly 200 children. As if there had been no cynical assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. As if there had been no strikes targeting peaceful nuclear and oil infrastructure, which could result in catastrophic consequences, not just economic ones, and not just for the people of Iran and neighboring countries, but also for States beyond the Middle East.
The sponsors of the draft simply suggest that we turn a blind eye to all these unlawful actions and unprovoked aggression against Iran by the US and Israel.
From the very beginning of the work on the text, the Russian Federation, together with our Chinese colleagues, consistently conveyed these concerns to the Arab States. We voiced them in the course of informal consultations and we also provided the cosponsors and all other members of the Council with our comments and suggestions in writing.
Specifically, we proposed the following. First, we proposed urging all parties to the current conflict to stop strikes. Second, we proposed condemning the attacks not only against the Gulf countries, but also against Iran’s territory, expressing regret over the attacks on civilian targets that resulted in the deaths of civilians and the Supreme Leader of Iran, as well as expressing solidarity with the Iranian people at this difficult juncture. Third, we proposed demanding that all States refrain from provocations and any actions that could lead to further escalation. Additionally, we spoke in favor of reiterating the need to settle any disputes by peaceful means and we advocated for the need to make a balanced statement that, in line with the UN Charter, the right to self-defense is something that not only GCC countries enjoy but also Iran.
At the same time, despite our country’s principled position, in particular, despite our categorical condemnation of the aggression by the US and Israel, we tried to make our language as restrained as possible, without calling the initiators of the current crisis by their names.
When working on the document, we were guided by the sole consideration – objectivity. Nevertheless, the authors of the draft resolution simply ignored the position of Russia and China. What disheartens us the most is the refusal to include in the draft an appeal for a political and diplomatic settlement of the conflict. Moreover, this was done in a categorical manner and without any explanation, as though we were speaking to the void.
We consider such an approach to negotiating UN Security Council “products” to be unconstructive, irresponsible, unacceptable, and unbecoming of a responsible member of the Council.
Mr. President,
Passing such a resolution will not advance peace in the Middle East. It will only exacerbate the differences between key players in the region. We are worried that, rushing to condemn Iran, the GCC countries may undo all the latest accomplishments on the path to restoring good-neighborly relations with Tehran, thus pushing away the prospect of creating a common security space for the entire region for many years to come. Moreover, a positive decision by the Council on this document could be interpreted by bad-faith actors, and primarily by those who started this war, as a “blessing” to proceed with aggression against Iran. We urge all UN members to bear this in mind.
Thank you.

I don’t think Iran has any choice now but to develop nukes. What’s the alternative? Believe any guarantees that the USA won’t attack them again?
They will have to spend Billions rebuilding. I don’t think they have spare Billions for further weapons developments.
Or they could enter into agreements with Russia and China but then they’re dependent on those countries to maintain their weapons systems or worry everytime there’s a change in leadership who might decide their relationship shouldn’t be a priority.

My thoughts on winners and losers from this war Iran: Who Loses & Who Gains? It certainly looks like the jawboning to get the oil price down is starting to fail, especially with people realizing that the flow out of the G7 strategic oil reserves is limited to about 2 mbpd – a pissing in the ocean compared to a 15 mbpd shortfall. Also, that doesn’t help natural gas, and oil and gas products (diesel, jet fuel, fertilizer, helium etc.) that are critical to so many industries (including even semiconductor production).

Trump is between a TACO and a hard place, with no good options; with escalating pressure as the markets start to really roll over. A good piece by Michael Roberts on the Hobson’s Choice for both Trump and much of the global economy. The EU will try to put off for as long as possible the refilling of their natural gas reserves, which are at very low levels for the time of year. They need to start refilling in May/June at the latest or risk winter gas shortages. In 2022 it was in May/June that EU gas prices really exploded higher. If the Strait of Hormuz is still closed going into April we should expect escalating panic out of the EU, especially if Putin makes good on redirecting the Russian LNG tankers.

US 10 year at 4.25% and looking to break out higher. The acceleration in the UK rate is looking much worse, reflecting its fiscal position and lack of any substantive natural gas reserves (that neoliberalism for you!), 10-year at 4.714%. If it gets through the previous high of 4.9% the skies the limit and the UK could be in a very serious financial crisis. The UK could get way cheaper for foreigners fast, while much more expensive for its population. Should have gone with China (or even South Korea) for those nuclear power stations! And forced the gas companies to build storage, and separated gas from other electricity sources for calculating the marginal prices (as Spain did, but that would reduce energy company windfall profits). The government certainly cannot risk the massive government subsidies to private windfall profits given the current fiscal position. Why is the UK at high risk from Iran-fuelled energy price surge? from Reuters.

“Wholesale British gas prices have leapt by around 70% this week as energy shipments were halted through the Strait of Hormuz, and Qatar – which provides a fifth of the world’s liquefied natural gas – halted production … Around 30% of Britain’s electricity comes from gas-fired power plants – compared with 17% in Germany and just 3% for France – and it is used for heating in more than 70% of homes. Prices are almost always set by gas, which is more expensive than power from renewable sources … Britain gas storage sites can hold around 12 days’ worth of demand compared with 90 in Germany and more than 100 in France … Household energy bills will not go up now because UK gas prices are capped on a quarterly basis by Ofgem, a power regulator. Prices will fall in April after the government shifted some levies to general taxation. But Ofgem’s “observation period” for setting prices in the three months from July 1 will capture the current surge as it runs from February 18 to May 18.”

I looked at aviation fuel cost, which lags with the latest data being 6 March by IATA which is up 58.4% over the previous week at $157.41/bbl. Notably, the Index Value relative to the year 2000 is 430.3 up from 271.7 last week. with 2000 being 100. Brent oil continues to be manipulated so it stays about $100. The other measure we can look at to get an idea of the actual picture of fuel prices is to look at US average diesel for today vs last week–$4.860; $4.166–a rise of 70 cents or about a 17.5% rise which is far less than the 58.4% global average rise for aviation fuel. European fuel prices reported by this site as of 9 March show Netherlands in the lead at $9.61/gal followed by Germany at $9.21, while Bulgaria has the lowest at $5.62/gal. Quite a spread. And since Europe is almost completely cutoff from Gulf oil imports–Spain might be the only exception since it withdrew its Occupied Palestine ambassador, although I believe the Iranian criteria was to sever all diplomatic relations with the Zionists to qualify as a friendly nation for a Hormuz Pass. I haven’t seen any reports of airline fuel surcharges yet, but with the rises noted above, they will soon occur.

The total US government debt is 36,220 billion dollarbucks. An estimated 8,700 of it will mature (capital to be repaid) in 2026.

The fiscal deficit (fiscal revenue -spending) for 2026 is estimated at 1,800 billions dollarbucks.

A few thoughts on where we are that point to where we’re going.

  1. While we have more information channels than before, we’re watching the most controlled information space of any conflict in our lifetimes. A lot of opinion and extrapolation, but little new data in daily updates.
  2. The lack of information flow is noteworthy given that we live in the most surveilled societies in history. Cameras everywhere. Complete internet surveillance. No financial anonymity. The information flow is one way only.
  3. The daily podcast/posting/broadcast schedule floods the space with content that makes you feel informed but provides no new concrete facts.
  4. Watching a military that was purged of independent thinkers and non-conformists at high ranks in 2023 through vax mandates.
  5. The bureaucracy going into self preservation mode. The FBI has confidently announced precognition of Iran plans to attack the West Coast, while they’ve been aggressively uninterested in progress on a list of consequential domestic investigations.
  6. In the U.S., an unapologetic assertion that voting does not determine policy. An abandonment of separation of powers: 25 shadow docket decisions by SCOTUS in the current Trump term; and Congress trashing its Article I, Section 8 exclusive power to declare war.

All raise questions about the meaning of democracy in 2026.

Thanks for reproducing Vassily Nebenzia’s remarks I linked to yesterday. As I wrote then, Russia and China let that pass to preserve the document as a historical marker related to the onset of the war. Even more powerful were his remarks after the defeat of the Russian draft resolution that provided Trump with an offramp:

This vote was a litmus test and, forgive me, an invitation to show one’s true colors. We are curious: do those countries which did not support the resolution really fail to comprehend how pathetic they look? We have already mentioned that this is not even “double standards.” It is surreal, it is a mirror world, theater of the absurd, and, quite simply, a disgrace. From now on, we will constantly remind you of this when, in other situations, you will try to portray yourselves as champions of international law.

Regardless of the outcome of the voting today, Russia will continue to make every effort to swiftly end the confrontation in the Middle East and to resolve any differences by peaceful means. We will provide every assistance to the countries in the region and other parties to the conflict. And we expect a similar approach on the part of reasonable and constructively minded member States. [My Emphasis]

As was discussed at the end of the Hudson/Wolff/Nima chat today, at the end of the previous world wars new institutions aimed at providing a basis for international law and dispute resolution appeared, and a new institution will be formulated at the end of this world war that very likely won’t include the Outlaw US Empire because it won’t be allowed a veto anymore, but must include some mechanism to discipline nuclear armed states.

I also want to direct barflies to the chat Nima had with Patrick Henningsen yesterday where Henningsen puts forth a very well-founded thesis for what’s happening that includes the escalating cycles of violence aimed at civilians that began during WW2 and the forces that initiated them.

https://scheerpost.com/2026/03/12/20k-drones-vs-4m-missiles-norton-explains-why-the-u-s-is-losing-the-war-it-started/

For quite some time, Robert Sheer has produced Sheerpost on WordPress, which linked to his, always interesting, interviews and served as a news aggregator, providing articles from the best (in my opinion) journalists of the day. Recently, family members began providing their own, very competent articles and those from new reporters, whom I had been unaware of earlier. Apparently they have now hired Ben Norton, whom they refer to as Norton, a ScheerPost Staff Journalist.

For more than a decade, Ben has been providing passionate, insightful commentary on international affairs. While I value his thorough analyses and well organized presentations, I especially appreciate his verbal presentation; the clear enunciation (in multiple languages), grammatical correctness, and lack of superfluous fillers (‘ah’, ‘um’, ‘you know’, etc.) pervasive in so many YouTube presentations. I hope Norton’s association with Robert Scheer’s organization proves fruitful.

So them don’t die at normal human rates at all!

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I’ve had my thoughts about the connection between all this and the Globalist/WEF-Davos/Epstein Class aspirations along those lines. IMO, one of the reasons why Iran has set up its Hormuz Pass policy is to prevent that by providing passage to nations that cannot handle such shortages and aren’t in the axis aligned against Iran, Bangladesh being one such example of a needy nation given a Pass.

It would be hilarious and full of poetic justice if Iran granted freedom to traverse the SoH to Spanish-flagged ships. Imagine if Spain became the lifeline to Europe? Only a decade ago Spain was a sovereign debt basket case bullied by Germany. History sometimes has a sense of humour.

About UN Security Council resolution 2817 adopted on 11 March 2026:

It wasn’t easy to find the text of this resolution. When questioned, ChatGPT replied that the text of the resolution was copyrighted and that he could only provide me with excerpts!

To assess Russia and China’s abstention, it seemed essential to know whether the text had been adopted under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, which only can authorize the use of force.

When questioned again, and more specifically about whether the text had been adopted under Chapter VI or Chapter VII, ChatGPT unequivocally answered me that it was under Chapter VII.

I’ve only just found the complete text. Surprise! There’s no reference to either Chapter VI or Chapter VII. The reference to Article 51 of the Charter (self-defense) cannot be interpreted as an implicit reference to Chapter VII.

https://passblue.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/RES-2817-2026-E.pdf

Thus, since the text does not authorize the use of force against Iran, it seems perfectly normal to me that China and Russia decided to abstain instead of blocking the resolution.

Obviously, Bahrain avoided any reference to Chapter VII in its draft resolution precisely to prevent a veto from China and Russia.

Diplomacy often has a farcical side.

(It was the first time I’d actually used AI… the responses were appalling.)

Thank you for posting these remarks. I agree that much of the trash talk aimed at Russia and PRC is trash. But the question of when the UN was degraded idealizes the past. In many respects the UN has always been too much like the predecessor League of Nations, a den of thieves. The UN’s role in the formation of the Zionist enterprise or its role in the savage American attack on the Korean people occurred within only a few years of its organization. There were reasons for Stalin and the USSR to join, but it doesn’t take much hindsight to question the permanent veto, especially in the days when the Republic of China held it.

Posted by: Roger Boyd | Mar 12 2026 18:03 utc | 15 Thank you for linking to Michael Roberts post. As so often, Roberts is best on economic issues. His endorsement of the figure of 30 000 dead in the protests is nicely symptomatic. His reference to Trump’s political fortunes is like so much analysis, even here, that tacitly presumes that Trump is still taking into account popular opinion, even that refracted in the rigged political system.

(No, that is not the same thing as falsifying votes, which can’t really be done on a big scale in a decentralized system. That’s why he’s trying to federalize the acceptance of votes by the federal government via the SAVE act. Under color of law, SAVE will allow the federal government, now Trump, to contest the results by falsely claiming violations of SAVE. That SAVE is clearly unconstitutional is irrelevant, as the Supreme Cesspool will either endorse Trump or as much as possible delay, to Trump’s advantage.)

Even so, if a long war ensues, it will intensify the existing trend in the major economies towards ‘stagflation’ i.e. rising price inflation and unemployment alongside falling economic growth.

In short, Trump’s hard place may not be all that hard in his eyes. As for TACO, that’s a silly meme. Trump rarely if ever reverses a policy, however much he ducks and weaves.

Longer version: Again, Roberts is tacitly assuming that elections matter even in the way they did prior to Trump’s campaign for personal dictatorship. That’s why he forgets here for once to think about profits. First, if world economy is already heading towards a downturn (I think he is correct on this being the trend) that means some bourgeoisie have more to lose than others. If the US thinks the American bourgeoisie will cope better and advance relative to the bourgeoisie in other countries, the downside to war will be perceived as smaller. The greater suffering of the masses is irrelevant to them. Second, this tacitly assumes that Trump is going to be equally responsive to all members of the American bourgeoisie, including the little rich. One of the reasons the bourgeoisie as a whole is trending towards promoting Trump’s personal dictatorship, is that they as a group are tending to think bourgeois democracy is a luxury, they need to regiment the whole society in the names of profit and empire. The inevitable result that an arbitrary government like Trump’s will discriminate between them is a price they are increasingly willing to pay.

Anyone can install a heated Toto Bidet. It is exceptionally well-made (Japan) and virtually eliminates the need for toilet paper. As a person with Crohn’s Disease, it is also an absolute must for managing the symptoms of the disease. The down side is they are around $300 in the states but you will immediately see why they are prevalent in Japan. Bidet culture is superior toilet culture. Ha! Has a feminine cleaning setting too which automatically adjusts nozzle ddirection. Also a deodorizer that emits when you sit down on it that helps. Do it!

In The Next Generation, Klingons were largely stand-ins for Black (as were the Klingon knock-off Kazons in Voyager.) The Ferengi and Bajorans were largely stand-ins for Jews (mostly a DS9 thing?) The Bajorans with the things on their heads were more or less Hasidic. Cardassians were largely stand-ins for Nazis, the Dominion were stand-ins for the Soviet Union. Narratively the Dominion war re-wrote WWII so that the Federation undid the fictional representation of the Non-Aggression pact as a real alliance, and turned the Cardassians/Nazis into belated allies of the Federation/western allies, the reverse of reality. Added to the preposterous notion of a major war with one supply line, which doesn’t even make narrative sense in-universe… But I confess that I think of DS9 as the B-team Trek. Yes I know most Trek aficionados adore DS9. If you want space war, better to go with Babylon 5.

From Palestine Chronicle:
‘ISRAEL HAYOM: The newspaper reported that Trump wants the war with Iran to end and has given Israel one week to conclude it. The report also cited sources saying regime change in Tehran would likely require a ground invasion or renewed protests, which appear unlikely in the near future.
—————————————————
It does seem the inability to coordinate the decapitation strike and bombing campaign with the protests back in January was not so much a planning “failure” or lack of foresight as it was due to an unexpected setback (presumably tied to the Starlink systems). There was certainly a visible network of NGOs and ex-pats coordinated outside Iran energetically engaged with the job of massaging  perceptions of the protests,  and the junior Pahlavi figure was being promoted as never before.

If the Americans are indeed seeking to wind this fight down and postpone it to another day (and perhaps a different administration), the onus to retain the status quo or seek new security arrangements will be on the Gulf dictatorships. Israel has already begun its Lebanon campaign, during which it will attempt to regain its presumed invincibility by flattening its northern neighbour through attacks on soft targets.

There will be no “Board of Peace” seeking donations to rebuild Tel Aviv, a job which will most likely be on the tab of US taxpayers.

Uganda and Israel have always had very good relations. Israel historically propped up Idi Amin. A lot of the agricultural land in occupied Palestine was also taken from Uganda, as it’s one of the most fertile ground on earth. So the farms in Israel are part of Uganda.
