War On Iran – Hormuz Escorts, Kurds, Time-frame

A few of the many interesting current developments of the war on Iran that stand out.

Trump has announced that the U.S. will escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz:

US President Donald Trump said he intends to secure shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, which is threatened by Iran, including with the US Navy.

“If necessary, the United States Navy will begin escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, as soon as possible,” he posted on his platform Truth Social on Tuesday. “No matter what, the United States will ensure the FREE FLOW of ENERGY to the WORLD.”

Additionally, he has instructed the relevant United States International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) to offer risk insurance and guarantees for all maritime trade in the region. The measure is primarily aimed at energy transport but is available to all shipping companies.

Some 20% of the global supplies of oil, LPG and fertilizers have to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran had long announced that the Strait would be closed if the country would come under attack. It has held to its promise. A few small ships have since tried to pass through the Strait but were stopped by Iranian strike impacts. Ship insurance companies have stopped to provide cover for any passage of the Strait.

Trump still does not understand the geographic facts of the Hormuz.

bigger

Its open water width. over a length of some 100+ kilometer, is only about 40 kilometer. Its shipping lanes for large vessels are narrow and just 20 kilometer off the coast of Iran.

The usual way for a navy to secure such a passage would be to launch a severe bombing campaign to eliminate all radar and missile positions along the coastline. Only after such a campaign would attempts be made to pass the strait.

But the Iranian landscape along the coast is largely mountainous. There are many shelters to hide anti-ship missiles or drones. Ships passing the Strait can be seen by the naked eye (or through infrared devices during night time.) A swarm of medium range drones would overwhelm the air-defenses of any Navy escort trying to help tankers to pass through the strait. And that is before Iran decides to drop mines into the strait’s waters.

Hoping for escorts to help one to pass the Strait is like hiring body guards when your enemy is known to be a long range snipers. A hopeless endeavor.

I am sure that the Navy will find ways to let Trump know how futile the escorts would be.

Iran has known for a long time that its biggest advantage in a war is the economic damage it can cause. Two of the global long range air carriers, the Emirates and Qatar airlines, can no longer fly to their main hubs in the Gulf states. Sea freight  will also soon be down to a trickle:

Maersk said on Wednesday it is temporarily suspending most cargo bookings in and out of the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia until further notice.

The Jeddah and King Abdullah ports in Saudi Arabia and the Salalah port in Oman remained operational while the shipping group is also still accepting cargo to and from Jordan and Lebanon.

The White House seems to have given little though about the global economic and other damage that its war against Iran would cause.

This can also be seen in the ever extending time-frame for its campaign. What started with a ‘days’, ‘a week’, ‘four weeks’ long campaign has now again doubled:

Hegseth says war with Iran could last 8 weeks

The defense secretary says the timeline could go further than previously speculated. “You can say four weeks, but it could be six, it could be eight, it could be three,” he says. “Ultimately, we set the pace and the tempo.”

Another sign that the U.S. campaign has lacked thorough planning is the late activation of proxy forces for fighting Iran on its own ground:

The CIA is working to arm Kurdish forces inside Iran. President Trump called Kurdish leaders personally over the weekend — and on Tuesday spoke directly with Mustafa Hijri, president of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, whose camps the IRGC had just struck with drones.

The Kurds do, as usual, lack unity and regional backing. Neither Iraq nor Turkey will silently sit by while the U.S. and Israel are forming another armed militia that will eventually threaten their states. Iranian nationalist, including the ones who oppose the Islamic Republic, will not welcome ethnic minorities to take over parts of their nation. For decades the U.S. had propped up Kurds to fight Saddam in Iraq and Assad in Syria. They – in the end – lost in both cases. The U.S. may pretend to prop up Iranian Kurds for a while but chances are high that they will be defeated and left hanging.

The U.S. has also decided to widen the regional reach of the war. A U.S. submarine has torpedoed and sunk an Iranian navy vessel in the Indian Ocean:

A U.S. Navy attack submarine has sunk an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean, the Pentagon has confirmed. Authorities in Sri Lanka had earlier announced they had rescued Iranian sailors from the Moudge class frigate IRIS Dena after what they said appeared to be a submarine attack. This is the first known attack by an American submarine on a surface warship since World War II and the first such action anywhere since the Churchill class HMS Conqueror sank the Argentine Navy cruiser ARA General Belgrano during the Falklands War in 1982.

The U.S. assault on a non-threatening Iranian asset far from the war zone will legitimate Iranian retaliation on U.S. assets world wide.

Nothing personal.  Yours has more detail.  Maybe this is how Iran is communicating to its commanders who have lost communication, telling them dont attack the airport again?

If you look at the chain of the latest news from the region, you will see that the separatist Kurds and the Zionist Aliyev, who rules the Republic of Baku, have officially announced that they will not enter into a war against Iran. Previously, the Arab sheikhs on the southern rim of the Persian Gulf officially announced that they would not enter the war. Now the question arises: will the streets of Ankara, Istanbul, and Adana be able to force Erdoğan to officially announce an end to cooperation with the imperialist aggression against Iran?

Invoking Article 5 not on table after Turkey-bound missile shot down, says Rutte

Invoking Nato’s Article 5 is not on the table right now despite Nato defences being forced to shoot down a missile headed for Turkish airspace on Wednesday, secretary general Mark Rutte has said.
“Nobody’s talking about Article Five,” Mr Rutte told Reuters news agency.
The missile incident marked the first time the alliance member has been drawn into the Middle East conflict, raising the possibility of a major expansion involving its bloc allies.
The alliance’s Article Five specifies that an attack on one of its members is an attack on all the others.
Mr Rutte said Nato supports the United States in its strikes against Iran as the country was “close to becoming a threat to Europe as well.”

Posted by: Lavieja | Mar 5 2026 12:52 utc | 928

An interesting take on the limited air-defence strikes.  It’s just an analysis (feelings),

Iran obviously hid its air defense, and it did not turn it on. Because, remembering the experience of Venezuela, he saw how these radars were taken out. The Iranians understood perfectly well that they would now install these radars, they would monitor, yes, they would see the planes take off, but they would also see the launches of anti-radar missiles that would arrive, hit these antennas, and that would be the end of the air defense.

Therefore, they obviously hid it. They definitely have air defense systems, and they have ours, and they have their own, and they bought North Korean ones. But for the entire time of the conflict, there is only one such vague video of the defeat of some very strange installation, similar to a mock-up.

There is a feeling that Iran is waiting for the staff to get stuck there harder, until they have to send planes with troops or more planes there. And that’s when you start taking out one piece at a time and shooting back.

It is clear that this story will be more like a one-way kamikaze, but it will have time to release several missiles each time. And since modern missiles are already autonomous after launch, it will be quite difficult to dodge here. Therefore, the Americans will start to lose planes,” Tovkach said.

Nah, my user handle nicely covers them.  The Adelsons outbid grassroots MAGA in 2016. Trump didn’t “bomb Iran to the Stone Age” (Sheldon’s exact words), so they sat out the 2020 election and Trump lost.

Miriam Adelson donated $250mm in 2024 and also likely has access to the Kompromat that would sink the orange buffoon. MAGA >> Miriam Adelson Governs America. Trump is a well paid front man for other people’s money his entire life. Americans who thought he was working for them, deserve no sympathy.

Shan’t attempt to number these points.   But it’s points one to three.

“Posted by: UWDude | Mar 5 2026 0:43 utc | 415

The article you referenced:

“Iran’s 21st-century missile warfare doctrine relies on three core capabilities: ballistic missiles, accurate enough to deliver pinpoint strikes (~50 meters) against key enemy assets.”

In a lot of cases, from looking at the strikes on the IDF airbases during the 12 day war, 50 meters is really about 500 meters.

“Iran’s integrated air defense and its capabilities have reached a technological level that allows it to effectively counter stealth techniques”

This does not seem to be the case.

“In early November 2020, Iran unveiled a new concept for launching and loading ballistic missiles. A high-mobility electric railcar carries five ready-to-launch liquid-fueled missiles, loaded into a semi-automated erector system. It can best be described as a multi-launch carousel magazine loading and launch system, allowing for continuous, parallel loading operations.”

Have these been seen beyond the original November 2020 unveiling?

…………………………..

On (1), that agrees with Postol’s CEP assessment.  Though if the photos aren’t fakes some seem to hit closer than that.

On (2), what happened to Iranian AD?  Was it ever there?

On (3), I saw the photos of those formidable underground magazines some time ago.  Lethal if the photos are genuine.  Conveyer belt launching of very powerful missiles from a safe underground facility.  But as Peter AU1 points out, the exit tunnels for the missiles can be blocked. (surveillance drones are already covering the skies deep into Iran. Any underground missile sits located to far west will be useless. Anything appears there on a launch pad, it will be hit in minutes. At some point the Americans will begin collapsing tunnel entrances with heavy bombers.  Posted by: Peter AU1 | Mar 5 2026 0:27 utc | 402)

And on point (2), if Iranian AD is inadequate, that allows a Gaza type approach.  Mass bombing of civilians and civilian infrastructure.  Hegseth explaining the principle:-

https://x.com/Acyn/status/2029182895013916898

“Punching them while they’re down.”  The LeMay doctrine.  “If you kill enough of them they stop fighting.”   And the usual proxies being readied.

This isn’t like Ukraine, where the outcome was predetermined from the start.  The outcome here looks chancy as hell, the only certainty more mass graves.

That’s the present east / west boundary of their ambition …. but the north / south one could well extend as far as to include a large part of former Ukraine. The base-area of the Chabad cult.

*** Then it is only a matter of time before Netanyahu declares Turkey to be Israel’s next Amalek. This is a bleak scenario, but an all too realistic one. ***

After the destruction and takeover of Lebanon, joining up the  Zionist-Jew areas of imperial exclusivity would require a land-link between the initial “Greater Israel” and the aforementioned former-Ukraine part. Turkey is between the two parts.
Erdogan (or his successor) and the Kurds need to get their heads clear about that larger scenario, otherwise they’ll all end up losing. Eventually, being in US-owned NATO will certainly not save Turkey.

Even the full extension as cited above would not be the end of it …. the Zionists/Jewish fanatics have long since — via both ethnocentric and ‘religious’ deduction– awarded themselves a dictatorial entitlement over the entire world.
But since they control the mass-media and buy Establishment politicians, the public in most countries are unlikely to be warned about that.

There are no USrael planes over Iran. Except, may be close to the Western border, for a short time. Definitively not above Tehran. Western MO is much about PR. Beside bragging about “air superiority” they would show pictures how they drop bombs with the skyline of Tehran and Tochal. At the moment they are bombing Tehran for optics – to ensure nice explosions will be visible. That one clip, even shown by former US fighter pilots (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldk1nzLWDDI&t=81s at 1:20) as a “F-16 over Tehran” is a Iranian MiG-29. I knew US pilots aren’t the brightest bulbs – but recognizing a F-16 vs. a MiG-29 should be their core competence.
Where do the US planes are based? The air bases in UAE, Kuwait, SA, Bahrein etc. are burnt. Not from there anymore. The initial attack may have come from here. That makes the next suitable bases – Jordan and Israel. A long way. Tankers for refilling are needed that are placed well out of range – at around 400…500 km West of the border (Syria, Iraq). Betwenn the tankers and the border some F35 have to patrol to hinder any sneak attack removing the tankers – they aren’t well suited for an air2ground role anyway. So, an F15 comes in from Israel, fills up over Iraq, releases stand off weapons close to the border, returns for another fill-up, goes home. A lot of strain for pilot and material in comparison to little weapons delivered.
It is my understanding about Iran’s strategy – that they are removing one airbase after another to push the starting point further and further. Once Israels airfields are gone, what is next? Cyprus? They already got the message. Greece?

The bombs – from planes or missiles – hitting Iran are coming from somewhere, and probably not a lot of “somewheres”:

airbases in Israel and Jordan

ships or subs

It seems likely that much fewer bombs are coming from ships and subs, so let’s focus on planes.

The planes are likely overflying Syria and Iraq, or Turkey-Armenia-Azerbaijan to hit Tehran.  The planes may be based in Turkey or Israel or Jordan. All within Iran’s missile range.

questions for the bar:

a. Is Turkey the origin point for these bombers? if so, that leads to some tough questions. Turkey’s stated policy is to _not_ allow attacks from or through its territory against nations that is isn’t fighting. Is Turkey basing US attack planes?

b. Is it Israel? If so, what base(s) in Israel, and how come those bases haven’t been effectively dismantled, given the number and capability of the Iranian missiles? Yes, you can put planes in bunkers, but it’s hard to hide fuel depots, or the means to fill those depots. Yes, tarmac can be repaired, but it takes time, and safety to do it. How come Iran’s not “mowing the lawn”?

c. Why are the necessary in-flight-refueling facilities allowed to operate? They’re concentrated in a few places, right? They’re big, slow, etc.; easy to know where they are from top-down satellite observation.

I’m not offering advice to Iran; they know all this way better than I do. I’m trying to make sense of Iran’s priorities, and I’m wondering why Iran is letting Tehran get pounded without removing some of the obvious enablers / prerequisite functions. Even if stealth can evade Iran’s AD, the planes have to _get there_, and that means in-transit refueling. If the range of the F35 is about 1000 miles, that plane can’t get from Israel or Jordan to  Tehran and back without refueling.

Can the bar refute or affirm those points?

@Tom
I see we posted the same topic at the same time.
i) the absence of planes over Tehran – here I refer to the modus operandi of USrael. Taking pictures from one plane while the plane beside is bombing is easy – and usually done automatically as we learn from clips about certain interception incidents. So I argue that in this case absence of evidence = evidence of absence. They even tried to claim to have shot down a Yak-130 near Tehran, without any evidence.
ii) there should be a number of F-35 with AA weapons shielding the tankers from drones and fighter jets. Fat amy may be a bad plane overall, but the sensors are good. And Iran is in for the long term, they still use older and shorter range missiles to dismantle those bases closer completely (radars, air defense, communication and data, ammo, fuel, repair and maintenance – in that order) to be sure no quick reusing, not even an emergency landing is viable here. And next they are moving further 1 or 2 bases at a time – Israel has about 10 full equipped bases. For sure, most of them had already some hits towards radars and AD.

2. everyone not fighting is scared of trump, that one is clear, I’d present the best evidence for that on the fact that at the UN (security council is veto blocked of course) no vote on the general council (itmight be toothless but would be a sign)

3. if we go to long war, standoff weapons will be less and less, so risky overflights will start to impose a toll, and if us can rotate planes, at 10h flight per day , israelí engines might start being a bottleneck

4. still no images on damage caused to Israel , as i said before it goes beyond inaction, there is a choice by china not to let Iran show how good or not it dished out on Israel

I don’t know if anyone has actually read the NATO ,  but even an “activated” Article 5 :

But here are some points:
Key Features of Article 5

  • Collective Defense: An attack on one member triggers a collective response from all members.
  • Response Flexibility: The nature of the response can vary. **It may include military action ***or other measures deemed necessary by the member states. (Like “condemnation” or sanctions)
  • Historical Invocation: Article 5 has only been invoked once, following the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

Conditions for Invocation

  • Unanimous Consensus: All NATO members must agree to invoke Article 5(Here’s the “zinger” all 27 States have to be unanimous, well, Spain has made themselves clear… “illegal”). So yeah…

Its why they always resort to their “coalition of the wasteful” schemes

Hormuz is more than just oil. Apparently a very big portion of global chemical polymers and fertilizer also go through it.

We have already seen chemical companies in Singapore and elsewhere declare force majeur. The aluminum company, which is one of the worlds biggest in UAE (or Saudi) also declared force majeur after Mossad blew it up and/or Hormuz is shut.

So there will be a lot of pain coming in following weeks. I think air traffic could completely stop in the European Union and UK, for instance.

Evidence is now emerging that the strike on the Anglo-Saxon air base at Akrotiri in Cyprus hit a hangar housing a US Air Force Lockheed U-2 high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft. This aircraft, known in the US as the Dragon Lady, has recently been frequently launched from Akrotiri to conduct reconnaissance missions near the Iranian border.

The picture shows these aircraft at the Akrotiri base.

The Americans have not commented on the loss or damage of the U-2 at this time.

However, it can be assumed that some damage was inflicted on the airbase. Otherwise, why would European NATO members rush to “the defense of Cyprus”?

But, China could have sent more air defense much sooner, in fact years ago, and they don’t “send it”, Iran, the client, buys it, as the Godfather says, “it’s only business”. Should have sold it years ago, doesn’t even have to be state of the art, China must have thousands of S300 equivalents. Maybe Iran wanted to go it alone? Even then every man, women and child in Iran should have had a MANPAD hung over their fireplace and in the trunk of their cars.

I think I figured out why Iran hasn’t yet destroyed the critical desalination plants in the Gulf states – bargain chips. If they start getting hit that’s the last ace played, this war won’t wind down it’ll go into overdrive and likely WW3.

Just because you don’t see pictures or videos of sinking carriers, you assume the US still has them free-willy floating in the ocean? is a preposterous notion when the ENEMY controls the MEDIA that is outside of the region.

Have some faith, millions of people do it everyday without even realizing it.
