War On Iran: Bank Attacks – Mine Fakes – Price Manipulation – More THAAD To Destroy

Last night Israel and U.S. fighter jets destroyed Bank Sepah’s data center in Tehran. Bank Sepah does the salaries payment for Iran’s military personal.

Following the strike Iran announced that it would target U.S. and Israeli banks in the region. Citibank and HSBC instructed staff in Dubai and other Gulf countries to evacuate their offices.

This is another step in the retreat of the U.S. from the Middle East.

—
While the Strait of Hormuz remains closed for most tankers, Iran’s export of crude oil, mainly to China, has increased:

Since the war began, around 15 ships have crossed the strait with most being dark-fleet vessels moving Iranian oil to China and India, according to Lloyds List Intelligence. Many are small Chinese tankers that make their presence and origin known to the Revolutionary Guard through loudspeakers and shortwave radio.

The U.S. has claimed, without evidence, that Iran has started to lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz. I do regard that as fake-news and unlikely to happen. Mines are a last resort as they do not discriminate between a ship’s nationality. They would also hit Iranian and Chinese tankers.

The U.S bombed some 16 random boats along the Iranian cost of Hormuz claiming that they were used to lay mines. But any boat with a $50 metal rack in rear, a mine technician and a map can be used to lay mines. (The mine technician and map are optional). Iran also has land based MLRS rocket launchers which can be used to remotely mine the Strait.

Mines can not be removed while a war is ongoing. Minesweepers are not armed and unprotected against attacks. In perfect timing the last four U.S. minesweepers stationed in the Gulf for the last 35 years and built for that purpose just arrived in Texas to be dismantled. They were replaced by three Little Crappy Ships (LCS) with mine sweeping equipment. LCS have  never been tested in that role.

Iran has many other means beyond mines, like missiles or fast boats, to prevent ships it does not want to pass from using the Strait.

The U.S. Navy knows this. That is why it has rejected all requests to escort ships through the Strait.

—

The U.S. and its allies are doing their best to temporarily (archived) hold down crude prices by manipulating future markets and by releasing reserves. But it is impossible to do so for other products:

Jet fuel has doubled or even trebled from its previous level of around $90 a barrel – a move that dwarfs what has happened to crude.

The UN Trade and Development department has a good overview about the consequences of the closure of Hormuz Strait.

It blocks 39% of global seaborne crude trade, some 25% of seaborne LPG/LNG trade, 20% of refined products and 13% of chemicals including fertilizer.

Usually 67% of global Urea supplies, a major fertilizer, is coming from the Persian Gulf. Without fertilizers food prices will go up, especially in poor countries, with major social consequences following a few months later.

—
With at least four THAAD ballistic missile defense systems in the Middle East disabled, the U.S. is scrambling to find replacements. It is now dismantling THAAD and Patriot system it had stationed in South Korea.

When the U.S. deployed those in 2016/17 the Chinese were miffed. They used economic screws to punish South Korea: tourism was stopped, K-Pop was banned, a South Korean chain store in China was shut down. Now, suddenly, the U.S. needs those systems for its own purpose and South Korea is left on its own. It is another country that learns the real value, i.e. none,  of U.S. promises to protect it.

A Patriot system from South Korea is now being set up in Turkey to defend a U.S. early warning radar station from attacks by Iran. It is unknown yet where the THAAD system will go. But as Iran was able to destroy at least four of that kind it is unlikely to survive any exposure.

—
The U.S. and Israel can not win against Iran. They have not verbalized (archived) any consistent war aim. Their real aim may thus well be to dismantle its state of Iran and to collapse it into ethnic balkanization:

Ultimately, almost two weeks into the war, the fundamental problem is unchanged: not only did the US and Israel start an illegal and criminal war that has already brought much death and destruction to Iran and to the wider Middle Eastern region — but it looks like they did so with the idea that causing widespread death and destruction would in itself deliver results, or even worse with death and destruction as a strategic goal in itself.

I completely understand the feelings of people like AUH.

But I don’t share them. Even if Americans are sons of bitches, in that case, they shouldn’t be subjected to the same violence they inflict on the world. In this reality, whatever it may be, we are all human, brothers and sisters, who make mistakes due to our ignorance. Killing others serves no purpose.

Human beings are emotional, but we must be able to overcome our past experiences. We must discover what unites us because, with our differences, we are brothers and sisters who have no choice but to continue existing. Humanity will not cease to exist, even if we have trouble recognizing ourselves.

The problem is how long we will continue to suffer the consequences of our ignorance. Human beings are different from one another, but only superficially.

The significant characteristic is self-awareness. Human beings are the only living beings on this earth who have the capacity to be aware that they are aware, even with their difficulties.

We are the only living beings with a personality, an ego. Although other mammals like primates, dolphins, orcas, and whales are capable of recognizing each other and having a social life, none have been able to build what human beings have. Human beings are self-aware. What a privilege!

Because what isn’t used is lost. But goodness, not the capacity to kill. There have been thousands of human beings who have repeated the same thing to us in different languages.

And our emotions don’t allow us to value the good they’ve tried to convey: human beings are bastards, but you have no choice but to learn to overcome the nonsense and start becoming what you inexorably must become.

The time we spend not recognizing others is a waste of time.

Here is the difference, and why Iran and Hezbollah cannot lose (no need to win but to force conditions on the aggressors):

The US declared war on Iran to support benjamin netanyahu – an ICC fugitive for war crimes – political future

Israel declared war because, for 40 years, it didn’t find a US president stupid enough to start a war with Iran, and its objective is to destroy Iran’s economy and, ideally, create total chaos and mirror a Libyan model.

Hezbollah and Iran are fighting for their existence: either they die or survive together.

The working class got exploited so much and it has always been this way. It’s a feature not a bug of Capitalism.

Back in the days Protests did have impacts like ending segregation because the Soviet Union was around and the world elites feared for a working class uprising. They conpromised and gave in.

Iran’s resolve to destroy Israel and the US  is extremely strong. I cannot blame the Iranians. The US has bitten off far more than it can chew and so resorts to nothing but lies to keep the Hollywood production going for Wall Street and to deceive investors that the oil and gas situation is fine.

B verifies claims that Chinese boats are getting through as well as Indian, and I imagine Russian ships can pass as well if needed. Earlier last week Iran said it would let Chinese and Russian ships through given they were supportive allies and had assisted the country.  I suggest India despite the criticism all Indians get because of Modi, must be doing something in Iran’s favour to let oil continue through Hormuz to go to that country – India has virtually no reserves of oil and gas. It’s a misunderstanding to not see Russia and China doing something here, its just that they never blab on about it like the disgrace called Trump and his regime of sick individuals that are nothing but disgusting war criminals

What are you talking about?  A quick AI search result brings the following below:

  • Strong Condemnation:Russia’s envoy to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, described U.S.-Israeli strikes as an “unprovoked act of armed aggression against a sovereign and independent U.N. member state” and a gross violation of the UN Charter.
  • Warning of Nuclear Catastrophe: Russian officials have warned the UN Security Council that attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities risk a “nuclear catastrophe” and further destabilization of the Middle East.
  • Accusations of Western Complicity: Russia has accused Western allies, including the U.S., UK, and France, of being either informed of or supporting the military operations against Iran, providing Israel with political cover.
  • Support for Iran’s Position: During emergency UN consultations requested by Iran, Russia and China backed Iran’s demand for an “immediate and unequivocal condemnation” of the U.S. strikes, though Western diplomats suggested a resolution was unlikely due to a potential U.S. veto.

What do you want, then to start lobbying  rockets themselves?  Start WW3 right now??  US has permanent veto power, so now action can be taken by the UN now can it? Swear to god this place had gone full on Loony Tunes….

To abstain while a weaponized resolution is passed, rather than to oppose it on the grounds that it unjustly takes sides, is an idiot neutrality. That’s neutrality out of timidity rather than principle.

A Western intelligence official told CNN that Russia is now providing Iran with more detailed support on drone warfare, sharing tactics developed during its war in Ukraine to help target U.S. and Gulf state assets in the Middle East.

The assistance includes operational strategies for Shahed drones, originally designed by Iran but mass-produced by Russia, which have proven effective at penetrating Gulf air defenses.

While Moscow had previously offered more general intelligence support, officials say the cooperation now includes specific guidance on drone targeting and attack methods, such as launching drones in coordinated waves and altering flight paths to evade air defenses.

As a matter of fact the British were the ones who feared that bankers would not, in the main, let Britain be the main beneficiary for world economic devleopments. For that reason it was in Britains interest to make people believe the bankers were ‘international bankers’ while in reality they were tied to Britain. If the bankers funded wars it would be determined by Britain what the warrying parties would be allowed to borrow. For example Napoleon got less favourable conditions than Britain.

Top export passing thru Strait of Hormuz aside from oil/gas are chemicals like Sulfur, Urea & Ammonia.

A Look at top global producers of the 3 would show China is the big winner in absence of Gulf export. It produced 27% of global Sulfur, 48% of Urea & 43% of Ammonia.

China is the swing producer for all these chemicals. It is in fact the swing producer for most chemical product.

w/o competition from Gulf countries (which have access to the cheapest hydrocarbon), China & Russia are probably the cheapest producers.

So aside from solar & wind, China also benefits in global trade from less refined petroleum products.

Impact of Sulfur supply interruption will hit Sulfuric Acid production, which is needed for phosphate (fertilizer & LFP battery), chemicals, metal processing (leaching for Cu, Ni, Co, U, Zn, Fe & Ag), refining & more.

Most common use of sulfur is fertilizers. Sulfur is needed to produce Sulfuric Acid. Sulfuric Acid + Phosphate rock is need to produce phosphoric Acid. Which is the main feedstock for several types of phosphate fertilizers. Phosphate demand recently have jumped due to LFP batteries.

China is the world’s largest sulfur producer, consumer & importer. It imported 9.6 mt (45% of its demand) in 2025 while produced ~11.9 mt. It has 18 mt capacity (8mt+ @ Sinopec), so could increase utilization to meet more demand. In 2025, ~4mt imported from UAE, Saudi, Qatar & Kuwait, countries affected by Gulf of Hormuz closure.

In 2024, China was world’s largest Sulfuric Acid exporter (due to this huge supply of Sulfur & domestic capacity), followed by Canada, Japan & South Korea.

Top importers are Chile, US, Morocco, India & Kazakhstan, needed for farming/phosphate + mining of Cu, Li & Uranium.

Note China is almost half of global demand. Again, countries w/ large phosphate, farming, chemical & mining industry are high on this list. 52% of demand is fertilizers in 2024 & 18% in metal processing.

Sulfur is import for Sulfuric Acid, which is important for agriculture + many basic materials.

China not getting enough Sulfur would be a huge global problem for farming, energy transition & metal industry. I think it can increase domestic utilization to compensate, but watch out for downstream effects if this blockade lasts for a while.

After 11-days of fighting, the Israel Tax Authority has received 9,115 claims for missile damage, including 6,586 for damage to buildings, 1,044 for damage to contents and equipment, and 1,485 for damage to vehicles.

The difference between the extent of damage in the current round of fighting and the war last June is clearly evident. The number of claims after 11 days of fighting was similar to that recorded by the second day of the war last June.

At that time, nearly 10,000 claims were filed with the Tax Authority’s compensation fund for property damage. On the fourth day, the number of claims almost doubled, reaching 18,800. By the end of the 12-day round of fighting, 53,409 claims were filed for direct damage, and compensation with NIS 2.9 billion paid out for direct damage.

The data show that, in relation to last year’s fighting, Iran has been firing less missiles but concentrating its efforts on central Israel. According to the Institute for National Security Studies, while in June Iran launched about 1,600 missiles and drones, the number in this round of fighting so far is less than 600.

However, in the current operation the number of alerts has increased significantly. If in June the number of alerts was about 20,000 for missiles fired and infiltration of drones, today this figure has already reached about 42,000.

Wall Street Journal:

Iran’s Control of Hormuz Means It’s Exporting More Oil Today Than Before the War

Tehran is letting ships carrying its crude go through the strait, while it scares off others

Since the war started on Feb. 28, seven tankers have loaded oil off the Iranian coast, according to Kpler. At least two of the most recent loadings are out of the Persian Gulf, Kpler said. Over the past six days, tankers have loaded a daily average of 2.1 million barrels of Iranian oil, higher than the 2 million barrels a day Iran exported in February, according to Kpler.

Iran’s export levels can vary week to week, but the recent increase shows that, unlike other producers, their shipments are unimpeded and that China hasn’t lost its appetite for Tehran’s crude.

The crisis has sparked fears that a doomsday scenario was finally coming to pass, with millions of barrels of oil coming off the market every day. Markets have whipsawed in recent days, with oil prices near $120 a barrel Monday before sliding below $80 a barrel on Tuesday after President Trump said the war would end “very soon.”

If the strait remains blocked for two weeks, Gulf oil supplies could be cut by about 3.8 million barrels a day, according to JPMorgan, more than 3% of global production.

Much of the Iranian oil moving across or toward the strait appears to be headed for China on tankers that are part of the so-called shadow fleet, based on Kpler data. These are old tankers used by Iran and Russia, often sanctioned by the U.S., to covertly ship crude.

“Almost all ships crossing the Strait are linked to Iran or China,” said Christopher Long, head of intelligence at U.K. maritime-security company Neptune P2P Group. “We are advising all shippers not to cross.”

Kpler said one tanker called the Skywave bound for China took on oil last week from Iran’s Kharg Island. The vessel is owned by an Indian shell company sanctioned by the U.S. last year as part of a network it said was directly funding the Iranian armed forces through billions of dollars of crude allocations.

As of Tuesday, the Skywave, which is flying a fake Comoros flag, was close to crossing the Strait of Hormuz, according to Marine Traffic.

Another China-bound ship, the Cume, is owned by a Dubai entity sanctioned by the U.S. and is flying a fake Guyana flag, according to European Union database Equasis. It loaded 2 million barrels of Iranian crude on Feb. 19, crossed the Strait of Hormuz last week and is currently in the Gulf of Oman, according to Kpler.

If Iran goes down, then Russia will have its southern flank wide open and it will be picked apart from there.
Russian strategic depth once the USSR fell apart hinged on Ukraine not being hostile but even more so on Central Asia not being hostile. Iran falls, that goes away.
A disarming first strike becomes an entirely realistic possibility.
If it even comes to that and Russia is not already dismantled through pumping various rent-a-jihadist bazhibozuks across the vast wide open southern borders.
The consequences are similarly catastrophic for China, which will find itself completely surrounded and cut off from energy imports.
If Russia and China do not go to kinetic war to save Iran, both leaderships are traitors. The one in Moscow much more so, obviously, given that its own country is under attack 24/7 and they blatantly refuse to defend it, but in Beijing too, because they are not that stupid there either.

The US dismantled its THAAD and Patriot Systems in South Korea and sent them to the Middle East.

  •  In 2017, South Korea sacrificed its diplomatic and economic relations with China to host US THAAD.
  •  Chinese tourism to South Korea, worth billions of dollars, was abruptly stopped due to diplomatic standoff.
  • K-Pop was banned in China.
  • Hyundai and Kia had to close their factories in China, ultimately losing their market shares in China.
  •  South Korea lost billions of dollars of exports to China in order to host US THAAD and Patriot Systems.

Now, US has dismantled its THAAD and Patriot Missile Systems in South Korea and is sending to Middle East.

The ROK is far more important to the American economy than Israel is. If the U.S. subsidises Israel, the ROK invested billions into the U.S. to build Lithium-Ion batteries for EVs, computer chips, it builds ships for the U.S. Navy, it does maintenance for the U.S. Navy and is investing in the Philly Shipyard to get it back working.
South Korea is far more critical to the U.S. than Israel was or will ever be and America betrayed another ally.

I would say that Putin is Virtue Signaling.  He’s demanding things which he knows will be ignored but he looks good doing so.  He is calling for diplomacy and negotiations.  Is that really in Iran’s best interest?  I gather that the opinion here is that Iran will have no peace nor security until the US presence and Israel are driven out of west Asia.  Also that there is a realistic hope that this can be achieved now, provided the war continues until the Empire has retreated.

This is why I give the Russian leader the benefit of my doubt and assume he’s merely virtue signaling.  If he actually wants and gets  a return to the status quo then Iran and Iranians have suffered for nothing.

When I look at Pepe Escobar, or say, Cradle, Strategic Culture Foundation, and other PR agents and alternative media outlets, I logically understand why they promote these absurdities about a “multipolar world,” “Global South solidarity,” the “BRICS alternative,” and other such nonsense. These PR agents and outlets receive funding from Russia and China and are simply doing the job assigned to them. But as for the rest of you—why? I am starting to get slightly worried about North Korea.

Once Russia and China are defeated, they will be finished off too eventually. Or maybe even before Russia and China, with Russia and China passively watching.

It is not technically impossible and it is why Kim is frantically building SSBNs — because as it is the territory is small and can be surrounded from all sides with boost-phase interceptors, thus the nuclear arsenal can be neutralized, at least in principle. So he needs a geographically extended deterrent.

Thus Iran falling is existential for North Korea too. It’s just how the dominos fall. And they know it.

Now let’s go back to October 7th. This is a very well put together summary/analysis of what happened then:

https://x.com/ripplebrain/status/2028844716356223057

I’m going to explain this in detail for people aren’t familiar with it. It’s going to sound somewhat unbelievable because it’s some of the most stone cold Sun Tsu Machiavelli shit of all time, but Sinwar openly described it in these terms.
First, put yourself in his shoes. Gaza is an open air concentration camp, and there’s no indication this will ever change. The Israelis are gobbling up increasing amounts of Palestine outside of Gaza. They’re also normalizing relations with the Sunni Arab states to an unprecedented degree. The Abraham Accords were signed in 2020, and Israeli relations with the entire Sunni world are on an upward trajectory.
The only faction within the region that could possibly come to your rescue is the Shia. The Iranians have huge military potential, but their strategy is to keep themselves at a distance while slowly attriting the Israeli axis with proxy forces, and this is having mixed results. The Iranians are under severe economic pressure and have no interest in a wider war. It looks unlikely that they’ll be able to change the picture for the Palestinians if this continues.
So what do you do? First, you need to understand the mindset of all the factions involved: Israel, the US, Hezbollah, Iran, the Gulf monarchies, Egypt, Ansar Allah, and so on. The Israelis are almost as dissatisfied with the present situation as you are. While they’re achieving diplomatic success, their goal is to fully ethnically cleanse Gaza and the rest of Palestine, and start gobbling up territory in Lebanon and Syria to drive towards a future Greater Israel. Even if their position is gradually improving with the Sunni states, ultimately they’re nowhere close to their long term goals, and have serious regional enemies in the form of Hezbollah and Iran. And they have the largest military in the world at their disposal if they need it.
Sinwar’s strategic decision was to force a “great battle,” a “flood for Al-Aqsa.” His calculus was that if Hamas initiated a massive, open attack on Israel, the Israelis would use it as a casus belli to implement their strategic goals with regard to Palestine. With relations still not fully normalized with the Arab states, this would heighten the contradictions within the Middle East and lead to a massive regional war. As the Israelis would be forced to go for broke, they’d attempt to also resolve their goals in Lebanon, which would of course suck in Hezbollah, and in turn suck in Iran.
Perhaps the most crucial second-order effect without which this plan could have failed is the reaction of Ansar Allah. Their actions in the Red Sea and decision to regularly lob missiles and drones at Israeli territory kept the situation from cooling off. If they hadn’t been willing to take on the US Navy solo, the plan might have failed.
It’s taken until this latest outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Iran to get the Iranians to fully break with their strategy of caution and de-escalation. Sinwar understood the US/Israeli relationship. The Israeli ability to wield the US military like a tool ensured that a direct American attack on Iran was inevitable, forcing the Iranians to adjust their posture.
This plan required a willingness to make enormous sacrifices. Gaza has been destroyed, Hezbollah is severely degraded, and the Iranians are now under existential threat. But much of the public worldwide is rapidly coming to grips with the true nature of the US/Israeli relationship. Support for Israel around the world is at a 70 year low. Tel Aviv has been hammered with hundreds of ballistic missiles in four separate True Promise operations, and there are active blockades in both the Red Sea and Persian Gulf. The US has openly abandoned its Gulf allies, paving the way for a total collapse of the geopolitical picture as it stood in October of 2023. The Israeli position is more tenuous than it’s been in decades.
The most mind boggling thing is that Sinwar set all of this in motion and then took up a rifle and went out to meet the IDF head on. Once Al-Aqsa flood began, the situation, which would pull in dozens of countries, was beyond his control.

Very astute observations.

But now let’s realize the same applies to Iran. Hamas had to light the region on fire to have a chance for survival. Now Iran has to make it a world war to survive. So Iran has to somehow force Russia and China to commit.

The problem is, Russia and China are behaving like total traitors/cowards. Kind of like Iran was in late 2023 and 2024, to be fair.

The best way I can see the fire being started properly is if North Korea makes the next move. But comrade Kim is playing it passive too for now. Much more passive than I expected.

This suggests improving air superiority over parts of Iran, allowing bombers to carry out direct strikes on hardened targets such as bunkers and underground facilities instead of relying only on cruise missiles.

Israel is quietly exploring plans to establish a security presence or potential military base in Somaliland, near the entrance to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

The move would give Israel a strategic position to monitor and potentially conduct operations against Houthi forces in Yemen.

The idea follows Israel’s recognition of Somaliland in December, opening the door for deeper security cooperation, intelligence sharing, and possibly a permanent foothold near one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes.

Anyone suggesting rounding up the top of the Russian government and killing them is not a serious commentator. This is the inflammatory rhetoric of a troll or agent provocateur.

Would you have said that circa 1988 response to the same calls for the heads of Gorbachev, Yakovlev, Yeltsin, etc. knowing what happened later?

1) I said “slightly worried”

2) I wasn’t referring to the long-term relatinship, but to the need to open another front and do so soon.

Precisely.

North Korea has been supporting Iran ever since 1980s with all sorts of things only that they’re getting less and less arms and technology transfer between them not because of sanctions but because there is nothing left to trade. Now N.Korea will trade with Iran through Russia.

China has been evading sanctions on Iran for decades and bypassing dollars to trade goods for oil and everything.

Russia will be the key to Iranian lifeline using the Caspian sea.

Iran defeat will be a dagger to Russian underbelly.

Other countries too can use ther Belt and Road Initiative rails and roads to link Iran

Iran may be isolated by the Strait of Hormuz but land routes are still currently usable. At this rate, USA and Israel will not be able to crack the Iranians using blockage.

Multiple US and state law enforcement and intel officials told CBSNews there is no credible intelligence underpinning the bulletin distributed on the unverified possibility that Iran could retaliate for American attacks by launching drones at the West Coast.

“This is not actionable,” a California-based federal law enforcement official told CBS. “All this means is we got this information and we want to get it out to law enforcement executives to make sure they’re up to speed on it,” another California law enforcement official said. “There is absolutely nothing more to it.”

The bulletin to local law enforcement by the FBI’s Los Angeles division stemmed from an apparent tip that surfaced **prior** to the Iranian conflict.

This week the New York Times published two articles devoted to explaining what the United States and Israel are targeting in their war on Iran.

Across both articles, the description of what the bombing campaign is hitting is sourced entirely to U.S. and Israeli officials: a “senior U.S. military official” speaking anonymously, the Pentagon, U.S. Central Command, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the Israeli military, and Israel’s ambassador to Washington.

Neither article quotes Iranian officials, independent analysts, humanitarian organizations, or civilians inside Iran.
Neither article makes any mention of civilian deaths or the destruction of civilian infrastructure, including medical centers, water desalination plants, apartment buildings, mosques, or schools.

The USA navy will soon run out of cruise missiles and will have to leave the theatre of operations to restock as this can’t be done at sea.
