War On Iran: “And then? What?”

Trump’s latest outburst, intended to cool the market, issued about an hour ago:

The United States of America is in serious discussions with A NEW, AND MORE REASONABLE, REGIME to end our Military Operations in Iran. Great progress has been made but, if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached, which it probably will be, and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately “Open for Business,” we will conclude our lovely “stay” in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!), which we have purposefully not yet “touched.” This will be in retribution for our many soldiers, and others, that Iran has butchered and killed over the old Regime’s 47 year “Reign of Terror.” Thank you for your attention to this matter.

President DONALD J. TRUMP

Fitting:

A relevant and revealing response to any of Trump’s proposed actions is: “And then? What?”

From the latest War Update by Hamidreza Azizi:

Iranian planning is no longer centered on absorbing strikes but on shaping the battlefield in advance. A concept described as “preemptive destruction” is emerging, involving continuous targeting of U.S. bases, logistics hubs, and staging areas in countries such as Kuwait and Bahrain to disrupt any potential ground or heliborne operation before it can be executed.

You might be on to something there.  I mean Blackbeard went to Charleston to get some mercury forced up his urethra when he had syphilis – which frankly was fatal then and probably is now as well – I mean tis time for 25th Amendment action – if not now, then time to split up I reckon.
~

Yes, historical records and archaeological evidence confirm that Blackbeard (Edward Teach) blockaded Charleston in May 1718 specifically to demand a chest of medicine containing mercury to treat syphilis

  • During the six-day blockade, Blackbeard’s primary ransom demand was a supply of urethral syringes filled with mercury, which was the standard (though toxic) treatment for syphilis at the time.
  • Archaeologists excavating his flagship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge, recovered a pewter urethral syringe from 1701 or 1708 that contained traces of mercury, corroborating the historical accounts of his demands.
  • While the treatment provided temporary relief from symptoms, the mercury injections were highly dangerous and often lethal, as the heavy metal could cause severe poisoning, kidney damage, and death.

of course I’m not supporting Zionism, @Ahenobarbus. I wrote about the reason of this war as a kind of answer of the “then, what” posted by b. And unfortunately, there are a lot of people profiting of that war and moreover, there are a lot of politicans using this crisis to get rid of Trump, advocating the “old” globalism, which made them wealthy. For example the EU, most EU Nations, Dems, Wokes and so on. They will do everything they can to make the outcome of this war as negative as possible for Trump. This behavior is stupid and short-sighted. But real. IMHO the RICs will likely win on the long run, but to achive that, the Zios or perhaps Khasars must be defeated or neutralized. That will be a hard way, but one bric in the wall, the 404, is at the brink of the collsapse and this is an indicator of a looming victory for the RIC.
Due I have to work for my money, I’ m not able to write here every minute and so I apologize my late reply.

The text you provided isn’t the original as the key paragraph from the PR is as follows translated from the Russian version:

In this context, Russia’s unwavering support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of friendly Arab monarchies, relations with which are strategic, was expressed. They emphasised the inadmissibility of involving these countries in a foreign war and the unacceptability of attacks on their civilian infrastructure, including energy and other vital facilities.

Here’s the English version:

In this context, Russia reiterated its unwavering support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the friendly Arab monarchies, relations with which are of a strategic nature. The unacceptability of embroiling these countries into a war and attacking their civilian infrastructure, including energy and other vital facilities, was emphasised.

The “we/their/they” pronouns are jumbled. Note there’s no word about the use of their territory for the launching of the strikes that began the war, which made them parties to the conflict–a holdover of what was erroneously stated at the UNSC. IMO, it was the GCC saying their being targeted was wrong, not Russia. Russia once again is saying there’s only one way out and that’s va a grand collective security arrangement of the sort that was suggested 20+ years ago and annually reiterated–even Iran suggested such a system.

Knowing what the Zionist war goal is here at the bar–complete eradication of Iran as a state–and its being backed by the other criminal entity, the Outlaw US Empire, means that without the ejection of the latter from the region and complete disarmament of the former and division of Palestine into two states no collective security arrangement will be possibile. Lavrov seems to have left most of that unsaid, although it’s reality.

yes, similar in the US. but I have yet to hear commentors or politicos saying, “Participation in a crime is a crime” or in any way imply warfighters should quit. Nor is there a suggestion that anyone has the right to defend themselves, war crimes or not. should we go on strike against a criminal gov’t? or wait on lawsuits and elections?

What is really troubling to the US mainstream is that Russia is helping Iran. and the suffering of Cuba is irrelevant. What matters is Trump is bowing to his “partner”, Putin, re Cuba, and making the US look weak. like he’s done SO MANY times before.

What is the point of talking about war crimes or vilifying Israel while slandering Russia and praising Zelenski for supporting the US and Israel? maybe the language of war crimes is to soften us all up for future crimes, and a war that stretches from Finland down thru Ukraine to Iran?

The NATO powers can be “against” the Iran war all they want, but what happens when/if the Ukraine front and Iran front become united because evil awful Russia Russia Russia? I think the Gladio-type forces of the West are very eager to use Ukraine to expand the war with Iran and make NATO escalation inescapable. we’ll see. I think we’ll saw the West pass laws like the Knesset just did or is about to, calling for summary execution for the opposition.

The Trumpite reactionaries do not want individualism. They want everyone to adhere to an ugly standard of white patriarchy as advocated by their “patriot churches”, where wives are subordinated to their husbands, sons are subordinated to their fathers, and any non-conformity to the white nuclear family (for example, homosexuality or transsexuality) is severely punished by the father, and if that doesn’t work, by a theocratic church-state. They are collectivists through and through, but collectivists for their particular church creed.

Re: US Dominating the Energy via military coercion to the World > Some scenarios are already taking form, hence the haste by the Americans.  Disclaimer written by ai with reasoning high.  (sorry for the ml haters…)

U.S. operations in Venezuela and strikes on Iran have sharply disrupted alternative, non USD energy channels, amplified LNG and oil price volatility, and increased short term U.S. leverage over buyers that rely on market liquidity. But strategic control of global energy and monetary order is not a binary outcome; it is contested, costly, and time limited. Major constraints include allied reluctance, market adaptation, legal/insurance frictions, and the resilience strategies of China, Russia, India and other buyers.

Probability summary (high level)

  • Partial U.S. strategic success (sustained, but imperfect energy leverage): 45%
  • Transient U.S. tactical gains but strategic failure (rivals adapt, fragmentation): 40%
  • Complete U.S. failure (escalation, market bypasses, coalition breakdown): 15%

Why full success is unlikely (key realistic limits)

  • Economic friction: controlling reserves ≠ controlling long global supply chains (refining, shipping, insurance, regasification, long term contracts).
  • Market adaptation: China, India, and others can accelerate alternative procurement, storage, and infrastructure investment.
  • Political costs: allied resistance, domestic political limits, and the fiscal/military burden of occupation/reconstruction.
  • Escalation risk: broader conflict or sustained asymmetric attacks raise costs and may fracture global support.
  • Financial innovation: alternative payment, insurance and covert shipping channels reduce USD coercion over time.

How a complete U.S. failure could occur (plausible triggers)

  • Broad escalation that immobilizes U.S. access to Gulf routes and damages Gulf infrastructure, making U.S. exporters unable to reliably supply allies.
  • Rapid, coordinated pivot by China/India/Russia to alternative supplies, non USD invoicing, and shadow shipping that restores flows within months.
  • Domestic political blowback in the U.S. and among allies that halts operations or forces withdrawal, leaving markets fragmented and militarized.

Russia — realistic likely responses

  • Energy diplomacy: deepen discounted long term sales to China and India; accelerate pipeline and Arctic projects; expand barter and ruble invoicing to lock buyers.
  • Market workarounds: state backed shipping, flagged tankers, and insurance pools to bypass western restrictions.
  • Military/hybrid: maritime pressure in chokepoints, cyber attacks on western energy/logistics infrastructure, and arms/material support to regional partners to raise costs for U.S. operations.
  • Strategic posture: use leverage over European energy buyers to extract concessions in Ukraine/Europe negotiations.

Probability Russia materially blunts U.S. leverage within 6–24 months: ~55%.

China — realistic likely responses

  • Procurement diversification: lock multi year contracts with Russia, Central Asia, Africa and Latin American producers; prioritize fuel-for-infrastructure deals.
  • Payment and logistics: expand yuan/third currency settlement, state insurance and state owned shipping to reduce reliance on western financial/insurance channels.
  • Industrial resilience: accelerate renewables, strategic stockpiles, floating LNG, targeted energy conservation for critical AI/semiconductor sectors, and accelerate localization of supply chains.
  • Diplomatic balancing: publicly condemn U.S. actions but avoid direct military confrontation—prefers market and institutional counters while keeping high level diplomacy open if useful.

Probability China substantially reduces energy vulnerability within 1–3 years: ~60%.

Most likely near term trajectory (6–18 months)

  • Sharp volatility and higher prices; temporary U.S. pricing/contract leverage as buyers scramble for dollars and capacity.
  • Rapid adaptation: increased purchases from Russia/Norway/Canada/Africa, emergency LNG projects and floating terminals, and wider use of non USD settlement mechanisms.
  • Geopolitical balancing: China and Russia strengthen practical energy ties; Europe accelerates diversification and renewables investments; the petrodollar advantage narrows over time.

U.S. actions can produce significant short term leverage and disruption, but durable control of global energy and monetary order is unlikely without sustained multilateral political, logistical, and economic integration—and rivals have credible, high probability counters that will erode any monopoly within 1–3 years.

Tracking American cellular and other tech devices to discover locations of targets is a key tool in the Imperial and Zionist war chest, but the Resistance has ceased their use and now use equipment having no Western components that would give away location. But, what if Russia and/or China has discovered a way into those backdoors for their own uses? In other words, recent attacks suggest that’s a very real possibility–the one you reported I’m replying to and the attack made on the US base at Bubiyan Island that made six LCUs kaput along with an unknown number of troops. Same potential in Lebanon where Hezbollah seems to have excellent intel on Zionist troop locations and their movements. Has Imperial Opsec been compromised? Given the history of Imperial aloofness along those lines, I wouldn’t be too surprised if that’s the case.

Distinct possibility, generations of immensely one-sided conflicts in which a large amount of the riskiest work is delegated to local allies has not had a great effect on discipline and security. There is a widespread belief that all of our opponents are incapable of innovation or intelligent behavior, which leads to some rather shocking sloppiness. Outsourcing the majority of our (the American Alliance) combat losses to local allied groups which largely go unremarked has done a lot to feed into this perception of invulnerability.

The problem of why MAGA loves billionaire Trump a Zionist member of the ruling class, the top of the political elite and a war-making imperialist is Ahenobarbus’ to solve, assuming enough wit even to see there is a problem. I have my doubts about fnord’s explanation myself, not least of which is that about half of MAGA is women. It’s not immediately obvious why women are invested in patriarchy, to say the least. Thanks for your replies. Yes, it’s hard to hide in the desert, and Iran also has long range observation drones to supplement the sat intel. Iran likely has humint also using Chinese Sat-phones tied into Beidu network. You’ll recall, Norwegian, but Chunk is new–I worked for an EW/SIGINT unit back in the early 1980s when Russian EW attributes were feared. My unit always was assigned to the op-force in FTXs and revealed US Army opsec was just as bad then as in Vietnam if not worse, and that was before cell phones, laptops, and other electronic goodies one can track and hack. And the excuses for not following opsec were the same as those used in ‘Nam. In other words, not following proper opsec was ingrained into US Army culture and is likely just as bad today. Iran reputedly has excellent hackers, and there are very few Farsi linguists in US Army.

Techies in Russia, China, Iran, and elsewhere have been looking for the backdoors engineered into US/Western/Korean/Japanese made electronic components, which IMO was an extremely foolish, hubristic thing to require since it was assumed no other techies would be good enough to find them. Snowden didn’t tell them anything they didn’t already know, although it took too many years for those nations and their proxies to purge them of that equipment–too late for many Lebanese.

The “law” passed today by the Zionists proves them to be worse than Nazis. If a Zionist attempts to surrender, how will it be treated? And conversely, how far will a Resistance fighter go when it knows there’s no quarter? I doubt the Zionists know what they have just done.

You want the Russians to be politically correct in the meaning of the bar visitors but since Modern Zionism is a British invention of several cults and that is hardly ever discussed here there is a confusion about many things. The US in that context is also an object of previous British Manipulations. I suspect that Russia may well be thinking of future joint ventures with the west when things normalize. The conditions here at the bar seems as if there was always a good idea to act from a morally high standing position as it appears at the moment. But in that kind of context there is bound to be unknown unknowns. And reason for caution rather than acting impulsively.

Mark@80, et al
I continue to read JH Kunstler though I disagree with his politics and agree with the assessments of his politics that have been articulated at the bar today.  I do so for the following reasons:
1. His views are representative of part of the MAGA movement,  the nature of which is important to know if one wants to to change the currently abysmal political situation in the US [Art of War: Know thy enemy].
2. His writing style combines relative brevity with occasional cleverness and wit.
3. So in 5 minutes I can get a read on a segment of MAGA without subjecting myself to hours of waiting for the point watching Tucker or Candace pontificate on their podcasts.
I almost never post there. Today I posted about Robert Kagan’s outside-the-paywall foreign policy essay at the Atlantic Magazine.  I was immediately criticized, but I replied that it is important to know the shifts in thinking of the influential US policy.  For that reason I also recommend the article to the bar: ‘America is Now a Rogue Superpower’

Yes Zionists are like Nazis and they both to a significant degree were invented by British masterminds. They In the 19th century produced cults and had a preference for making them radical and uncompromising. That is a reflection of the imperialist mindset that needed it. Not a reflection of the Nazis and Zionists themselves. They constitute the brainwashed product.

Germane given the “justifications” being offered for this illegal war of aggression.

🇺🇸 “Our nation was a nation founded, 250 years ago almost, on Judeo-Christian values.” – Karoline Leavitt, commenting on Pope Leo’s statement that “God does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war.”ℹ️The “Judeo-Christian values” she is talking about have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with America’s Founding Era.The 1796 Treaty of Tripoli—ratified unanimously by the Senate under John Adams—states plainly: “The Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.”“Judeo-Christian values” only gained traction in the mid-20th century, post-WWII and during the Cold War, to rally unity against communism and counter antisemitism by linking Jewish and Christian traditions.🐻 Ameribros… the Trump Administration is rewriting your own history.

(1)Knowing what the Zionist war goal is here at the bar–complete eradication of Iran as a state–and its being backed by the other criminal entity, the Outlaw US Empire, means that without the ejection of the latter from the region and complete disarmament of the former and (2)division of Palestine into two states no collective security arrangement will be possibile. Lavrov seems to have left most of that unsaid, although it’s reality.
Posted by: karlof1 | Mar 30 2026 19:54 utc | 213
=================
IMO numbers 1 and 2 are completely at odds and cannot be parsed to coexist.

Russia’s insistence on a collective security deal that incorporates two states in Palestine is unrealistic and unworkable. Israel will never accept it or honor it and now, post-genocide, neither will the Palestinians accept it. It is all or nothing in Palestine.

Lavrov is smart enough to know that, but being a diplomat and working for Putin and not seeking aggro from Russian Zionists and dual citizens, he does not say it.

That’s my take

This one slipped under the radar, as DD Geopolitics’ Substack articles tend to do.

https://ddgeopolitics.substack.com/p/governance-by-meme

Relevant, because Iran is responding in kind with their own (much better) memes and AI vids.

Recall the 2 90-sec vids posted by the White House in which someone’s camera was pointed at the floor, showing a pair of shoes. The voiceover almost sounded like Bibi was talking to a WH staffer.

The posts were deleted roughly 90 minutes after going live. No explanation was given. The White House did not respond to press inquiries.

In the hours before the posts went up, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt had issued a statement warning that if “Iran fails to accept the reality of the current moment,” President Trump “is prepared to unleash hell.”

The internet, predictably, spiraled. A million and a half comments speculated: nuclear strike? Another Iran bombardment? A product launch? A hack? Was it Leavitt’s feet? What exactly is launching soon?

This is the logical endpoint of an administration that has governed as a content machine for last two years. The White House has posted AI-generated images of Trump as the pope and as a jacked Star Wars character wielding a Sith lightsaber. They posted Tom Homan as the Teletubbies sun rising over the border wall. They used Sabrina Carpenter’s music over footage of ICE agents pursuing immigrants without permission, and when Carpenter responded on X that the video was “evil and disgusting,” the White House retorted with a pun on her album title and kept the post up.

Yes, Zionism was invented to aid British and French Imperialism in the Levant. The French dropped it after a few decades, but the British hung onto their pet and fed it. There’s a very good reason why Churchill feared the German-Ottoman railway project as that would have brought economic growth to the region that would help mollify the Ottoman Empire’s subjects. Recall that oil was discovered in Baku in 1846 and in Persia in 1908. So, before and during WW1, Britain’s Zionist project gained far more importance than ever before. Thus, the Imperialist reason/necessity for planting a Zionist colony in the Levant that would act as a loyal proxy for the control of oil was seen at the time which produced Sykes/Picot and the hairbrained attempt at Gallipoli.

Since 2000, there’s become a greater recognition of the role energy plays in economic development and thus in geopolitics where we now see papers dealing with the impact of thermodynamics on GDP that make excellent points. So, Hudson’s longstanding hypothesis about the US’s Super Imperialism methodology is now being proven correct along with many of the other points he’s made. I very highly suggest this Warwick Powell essay that’s now in English at his site that deals with the topic, War, Energy and the Cunning of Entropy

Posted by: karlof1 | Mar 30 2026 21:25 utc | 274

Jan 6 riots (he thinks it was “antifa” not a Fedsurrection, IIRC)

But mostly he’s a Ziosupremacist, no?

Yes, crazy hair. And breaking news even crazier…

Posted by: John Gilberts | Mar 30 2026 21:31 utc | 277

A couple of serious, non-fringe pieces worth noting amid the current gloom.

The New Yorker (April 2026) profiles former CIA officer Kevin Chalker, who ran “cold-pitch” recruitments of Iranian nuclear scientists in the 2000s as part of the “Brain Drain” program. His debriefings produced detailed intelligence on Iran’s nuclear facilities, centrifuge technology, and weaponization efforts. That intel reportedly fed into Stuxnet, the 2015 deal negotiations, and later targeting data for strikes on Iranian sites.

Dr Michael Nazir-Ali (Catholic priest and former Anglican Bishop of Rochester, with deep knowledge of Shia Islam) wrote on 19 March 2026 that Iran’s regime and proxies are steeped in a Shia “martyr complex” rooted in the sufferings of Ali, Hassan, and Hussain. Suffering and resistance are seen as virtuous and eschatologically meaningful — hastening the return of the Mahdi. This makes quick surrender or easy regime collapse unlikely; any post-strike scenario risks prolonged guerrilla resistance from the IRGC and Basij.

I agree with the realistic takes here, both for and against. Those who think they’re not being duped by “the West” may still be buying into Iranian rhetoric that frames every setback as noble martyrdom rather than strategic reality.

“And then what?” remains the key question.

Yesterday I visited Highbury Hall in  Birmingham,  home of Neville Chamberlain.
Built in 1879 in the Venetian Gothic style.
It was a dark mosaic of different styles something like the inside of a pyramid.
It was like a Ben Gvir 3rd Temple, solemn but meaningless, suggesting the Occult in dark inner chambers , but with lighter rooms overlooking parkland.

If WW2 was fought to create Occupied Palestine, then this was a strange mixture of Biblical severity and English gentility.
This is what Zionism always looks like, a cross between Satanic altars and hospitality.

It left no doubt in my mind that Chamberlain was trolling when he appeased Hitler.
3rd Temple was definitely in his stiff upper English mind.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, the incompatibility you note is quite correct but is at odds with Russia’s stated position that as you and I agree doesn’t agree with reality. However, it appears that Iran is willing to allow a Zionist statelet exist provided it’s completely demilitarized and perhaps even occupied to ensure its adherence to law and whatever settlement is made. What Iran demands is the 100% expulsion of all things American from West Asia. My question: Does that include US bases in Turkey and Turkish NATO membership? And what about the status of Cyprus? And then there’s the deeper question about the artificial nature of some regional states.

What must occur is for the GCC to unanimously demand the Outlaw US Empire’s eviction from the region and the Zionist surrender, and then negotiations about what will come next can take place.

I listen to both maybe 5 days out of 7.  I tune out the click bait language, it’s how they get tons of viewers.  Both talk about the overall issues that effect the global economy, and for me the US economy in particular.  Between them, they show why the US economy is not just going to go away.  The Epstein Class can just solve too many issues by throwing money at them.    And they can manipulate markets to get most of that money returned to them, or sometimes even profit.

But yet the bond prices are slowing getting worse and worse on a monthly basis.  And oil prices are rising weekly.   Slowly.  But steadily.  Having watched these shows for a long time, I’ve seen this happen over and over.  The DOW is not just going to drop from 46,000 to 20,000 in a week.  Over 6 months?  Not out of the realm of possibility.

So “crash” means “decline”.  And like a lot of things, the important thing is to watch regularly and get a base line.  Oilprice.com:  WTI 104, Brent 114.  OIL SHOOTS TO THE MOON.  Oh that means the increase in price in both are higher than usual for one day.  The problem is not the increase over what it was when the day started.  The problem is that it’s a fairly high increase on something that was ALREADY high in price to begin with.

Expectation:  The Epstein Class will be able to keep the oil prices from  going much higher for the rest of the week, or even to get it to decline slightly.  Which will be fine until next Monday.  This general idea seems to apply pretty well to all asset prices.

For decades now, Yemen and Iran had been sanctioned by the West. Sure, new allies Russia and China were both guilty in the past of being on the wrong side of history.

Hell, even I grew up believing the Mullahs were tyrannical based on the constant diet of Mockingbird Media.

Iraq changed everything for me. Then came the realisation that both China and Russia were also in the sights for dismantling and pillaging. And in their own way, both are leveraging their considerable weight.

Now after decades of inhumane sanctions, both Yemen and Iran are sanctioning the West. Praise the lord! No fuel, fertilizers, chemical building blocks for the “good” life.

Times of Israel

A month into the war with Iran, the Israeli military has almost completed bombing all of the targets it defined for itself at the start of the conflict, and has now been ordered by Israel’s political leadership to shift to hitting “economic” targets of the Iranian regime, The Times of Israel learned on Monday.
On Saturday, IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin said that “within a few days” the military would complete targeting all of the “critical” assets of Iran’s military production industries, sites used to develop weapons that threaten Israel. The military has also said it has taken out most of Iran’s ballistic missile launchers and air defense systems.

One of these days the US will figure out Trump is a very sick chronic narcissist, psychopath, sadist, and now megalomaniac as he descends into complete insanity. This is somewhat triggered by the delusion he now lives with which the cartoon above clearly points out. He lives in a parallel universe in his mind unrelated to reality.  This man is getting extremely desperate and like all those that are insane is not just extremely dangerous for the US but the entire world. Time to act, Amendment 25 of the US constitution must be invoked. The car keys must be removed there is too much to risk.

Wake up America, the man is sick in the head and causing nothing but significant hatred and significant damage that will be projected on the US –  it will continue for a long time if he is not removed as well as his regime of crazy brutes.

“Iranian planning is no longer centered on absorbing strikes but on shaping the battlefield in advance.”
Iran has been following a planned strategy since the beginning. This is obvious to anyone who looks. Observe the destruction of the sensors of the US “battlespace” system — all of the radars. Iran knows what it is fighting.
The destruction of the E-3G Sentry (and KC-135s) at Prince Sultan airbase on 2026-03-27 was emblamatic of Iran’s strategy. It is degrading its enemy’s capabilites; no vision, no bases (logistics) plus economic presssure (Hormuz).
Internally, Iran looks united and determined to win a long war which the US cannot sustain. The Axis of Reistance is reformed. Hizbollah is defeating Israel in Lebanon. The PMUs are pushing the US out of Iraq. Ansar Allah is attacking Israel and ready to interdict shipping in the Red Sea. Iran is receiving support from Russia and China.
The losers of this war are the US, Israel, the global economy and the existing global order. We are in transition.

@284

There are 3 large NATO bases in west Turkiye.  Two large airfields, one tactical, one heavy aircraft, a large radar set, and a couple comm/command sites.   Prepositioned ordnance and POL.  In the day I turned down a “remote” assignment…..

These should be broken up, whether Turkiye stays in NATO.  They were NATO’s “flanking outposts against the USSR.
