Moon of Alabama Brecht quote

RIP Ali Khamenei

“Sometimes, I imagine myself dying from an accident. Or maybe a fever. And my heart becomes so full of sadness: that the chance for competing for paradise [i.e., martyrdom] will be taken away from me that way.”
Ajatollah Ali Khamenei – (source)

The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran was martyred on Saturday morning, together with other officials, by an Israeli airstrike on his home in Tehran. May he rest in peace.

bigger – Source: Carlos Latuff
‘Western’ observers make the mistake of seeing highly reverted Shia leaders as mere clerics. They are way more than that.

First and foremost they are jurists and judges with a deep philosophical knowledge of the law. The title Ajatollah signifies a high academic ranking of an Shia-Islam scholar. Ajatollahs are examples for those living around them. They are extraordinary people who should be emulated and who’s advices are to be followed.

The system of the Islamic Republic was build with redundancies (archived) to be able to survive external and internal shocks:

For those who led the 1979 revolution, problems with leadership change were not just ideas—they were real warnings from history. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini did not eliminate the supreme authority; instead, he made it part of the system. The intense debates of 1979 about how to avoid past patterns of collapse led to new answers in Iran’s constitution: Each major body was created to solve a specific risk exposed by history.

The Guardian Council was formed to guard against political drift and to keep laws in line with Islamic principles. The Assembly of Experts took on the task of selecting and supervising the supreme leader, to prevent a concentration of power without oversight. The Expediency Council was established to resolve institutional deadlock, ensuring the system could continue to function even when high-level disagreements arose. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the intelligence agencies were meant to secure the revolution internally and externally, checking both foreign threats and domestic unrest.

Iran is frequently portrayed as a political order bound tightly to individuals. Yet the architecture that emerged after 1979 was formed by a different logic, one founded in the revolutionary experience itself. Khomeini captured this hierarchy in a remark often cited within Iran’s political elite: “Preserving the Islamic Republic is more important than preserving any individual, even if that individual were the Imam of the Age”—a reference to Shiism’s 12th Imam, Muhammad al-Mahdi.

It is still unclear whether the system will always follow this principle. But one should expect a change in leadership in Tehran to be treated less as an ending and more as a chance for the country’s institutions to show they can survive.

I am confident that the Islamic Republic will survive this test. ‘Regime change’ in Tehran, which Trump seems to dream of (archived), is unlikely to happen.

Meanwhile the Strait of Hormuz is closed and the war of attrition continues …

But I imagine there are few happy faces (if any) in the US administration right now.

Almost everyone in the US inner circle will make (i.e. already have made) awesome windfall profits from speculating on higher oil prices. I don’t believe that a random number of dead US sailors/marines are a problem. This will be slowly drip-fed to the population. The profits for oil companies and from private speculation are real.

I do think that now the US government would like to get out of this: they got their “victory” (killing the Supreme Leader and some clips to show on TV) and prevented a peace deal (which would’ve caused problems!). I see no reason why the Iranian government should, or even could, agree to a ceasefire now. We’ll see what happens to the many US bases in the area, to the fragile Arab states and to Israel. I am convinced that Iran can force this issue upon the world and the US, there’ll be no ducking away.

If the USS Abraham Lincoln was indeed struck by the IRGC, it would mark the first time since WWII that a U.S. aircraft carrier has sustained significant damage from an enemy state. It would prove that Iran’s long-range ballistic missiles can bypass the sophisticated Aegis combat systems that protect the carrier strike group.

Regardless of whether the carrier’s hull was scratched or not, the strategic result is exactly what you pointed out earlier:

  1. The Straits are closed.
  2. The “Little Sultanates” are terrified.
  3. U.S. deterrence has failed to keep the oil flowing.

If the U.S. is denying the hit to project “strength,” but the shipping companies are still refusing to sail because they don’t believe the area is safe, then the denial doesn’t actually help the economy. The markets are reacting to the risk, not the official press releases.

We’re essentially in a situation where the Houthi resumption of attacks and the IRGC’s True Promise-4 have turned the region into a “no-go zone,” regardless of what the Pentagon says.

I thought about this too. I assume that the attack on the girl school was deliberate. The people planning this usually speak about demoralising the enemy. But that never works! And we have a lot of historical experience to know it doesn’t work. So what’s the real reason to choose such a target? My point is that even if driven just by sadism or hate, it’s counterproductive — assuming you want to achieve your stated war goals (such as: defeating the enemy or here: regime change).

So I can only deduce that the girl school was chosen as a target to prevent early ceasefires. Forcing Iran to fight on; just as with killing the leadership, by the way. While I can see a rationale here, it doesn’t make sense from the US point of view: I think it’s clear that the US government wants short, sharp strikes with quick successes.

And so I arrive at my final thought: Israel military chose the girls school to make sure the fight goes on for a while and not allowing the US to drop out. I am not religious but I hope that the bastards responsible for this have to pay in some form. The recent report about the death of the Israel air force are unusual: it’s the West that is obsessed with killing specific people (down to officers in the Ukraine war). I believe this is Iran’s first attempt at revenge.

That reminds me.

Some people suspect USA want to remove oil supply from the global market, because high oil prices hurts everyone else including China worse.  Perhaps the atrocity is meant to encourage intensity and duration of conflict and, in turn, closure of the straits and destruction of gulf neighbors’ supply.  Might make that Venezuela oil much more valuable.  Plus there are the inside information trading opportunities of buying Aramco puts, oil patch calls, etc.

Previously, other well-informed people said that theory doesn’t make sense.  But I forget their reasoning.  Here is an opportunity for them to explain again, hopefully this time without calling me stupid. /s

I’m afraid not.

Iran government supporters chant ‘Death to America’ after supreme leader killed, Associated Press, March 1, 2026

Do you hear that sweet, sweet voice of Khamenei’s mourners chanting the one message that you fear the most?

Marg bar Âmrikâ
Marg bar Âmrikâ
Marg bar Âmrikâ

Khamenei’s death has made the message reach even more people than ever before.

Princess Bodica thinks exactly like Trump does. Princess Bodica believes that a decapitation strike would make Iran capitulate immediately.

However, the forceful and rapid yet calm response that Iran mustered in the immediate aftermath of America’s sneak attack—when Khamenei’s martyrdom is known to both the Iranians and Americans but has yet to be publicly announced—proved that America was in for a much tougher fight this time around. American assets in the region were blown up systematically.

The Iranian government is not some cult of personality like the Americans’ relationship with Trump. It is instead a functional government with plans and redundancies that is designed to survive whatever the Americans are prepared to dish out.

Khamenei is important because he symbolizes resistance, not because he is the head of a cult.

I’ve previously mentioned on MoA about how Americans are baffled by the 2020 Korean War movie The Sacrifice because it seems to depict, from the Americans’ point of view, the technological superiority of America. It’s a 2-hour long movie depicting the Chinese PVA bridge-building crew and anti-aircraft crew getting blown up repeatedly by a couple of American planes. The Americans are baffled by the movie because Americans never had to fight for dignity and sovereignty. For people who had to live through and fight against American oppression, the movie resonates strongly with them.

The Chinese have learned two important lessons from the Korean War.

The first is that your oppressors will never hand you your dignity on a platter. You have to fight for it yourself. “打得一拳开,免得百拳来 Strike one punch to avoid a hundred punches” was Mao’s rationale for fighting the Americans. The PVA knew that if they failed in Korea, America will be free to rape their sons and daughters just like America’s proxy Japan did not too long ago.

The second lesson is that technological backwardness should never be glorified. Iron will and determination allowed the Chinese to overcome deficiencies in technology and production in the Korean War, but it should never be repeated. The Korean War ignited a fervor in the Chinese build more and build better so that future generations of Chinese people don’t have to suffer the same fate as the PVA did. Martyrdom is admirable, but when you can develop the means to fight off Americans, then surrendering yourself to being slaughtered by Americans is not martyrdom.

Judging by Iran’s calculated initial response against the latest round of American aggression, I’d say that the Iranians may be learning the same lessons as the Chinese did.

Abunimah: An Enormous Crime Against Iran (and not just Iran)

https://electronicintifada.net/blogs/ali-abunimah/enormous-crime-against-iran

Killing Khamenei, the leader of a sovereign state, in an unprovoked war of aggression is a flagrant act of international terrorism.

Before the murder of Khamenei was confirmed, Arab and Western regimes lined up behind the Trump-Netanyahu war. In a particularly perverse twist, many – including France, Germany and Britain – called for Iran to resume ‘negotiations’ – as if Iran, not the United Stakes and Israel, that had used ongoing talks as a cover to prepare another surprise attack, just as they did last June.

*Canada and Australia went even further, offering open support for the aggression.

All these countries – and their loyalist media, including their liberal wings – have for decades demonized Iran and portrayed it as an aggressor. But as I told Drop Site News, this is a reversal of reality. It is Iran that has faced decades of aggression from them…”

*No surprise. Like United Snakes and  ‘Israel’ – genocidal settler-states with populations overwhelmingly collaborationist and  prepared to ‘go along to get along.’ Free Palestine and Victory for Iran!

ISRAELI NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS DESTROYED

Israel’s reactor and nuclear facilities were attacked by Fatah and Khyber missiles. According to reports today, Sunday, March 1, 2026, tensions have reached an unprecedented level, and the Dimona nuclear facility (Negev Nuclear Research Center) has been the target of retaliatory attacks.

International news sources and eyewitnesses have confirmed that Iran has fired dozens of ballistic missiles at the Dimona nuclear reactor in southern Israel, in response to joint U.S. and Israeli attacks. Sirens have been activated throughout the Negev, and massive explosions have been reported.

Although Iran claims to have successfully struck the facility, the Israeli military (IDF) has so far refused to confirm the exact extent of the damage and has imposed a strict “media blackout” to prevent the publication of images and videos from the site. Military and nuclear experts have warned that a direct hit from hypersonic missiles on the facilities could cause a leak of radioactive materials and a widespread environmental disaster in the region.

“Trump signals that he wants to talk with Iran.”

Well, well, well.

So, Iran, can you afford a death by a thousand cuts? But then you will say, “Easy for you! You’re not Iranian so you wouldn’t have to die.” But I say, there are far worse things than dying.

When the empire strikes and appears in its truthful shape, you have two choices:

  1. Let it slink away. You will survive another day. But in your heart, you know they will just begin again their Intel ops until another round of decapitation and demoralizing strikes can begin.
  2. Strike with all your might and soul to eternally sanctify the good inside you and protect the innocent.

Sure, I am not doing the dying. But if I can offer this, I will say that being consumed by fire is far better than being consumed by an evil that wants all men spineless and in servitude.

Please go the course, Iran. I will sing your praises for the rest of my lif

Don’t know what you want Russia or China to do, the Iranians seem to be doing alright so far. One should think of  the Vietnam war when considering what actions Russia and China should take. During that war, the Russians kept the Viet Cong resupplied and watched on as the empire got its arse kicked. I think it will be the same here with Iran. Keep them supplied and enjoy the spectacle of the empire getting its corpse well and truly kicked.

No matter how many leaders, military personal and civilians are killed none of it matters if the Islamic Republic remains. Unless the US, Israel and a coalition of Sunni Muslims in the region invade on the grounds of Iran and win, there will be no regime change or victory. Israel / US are losing in ways people cannot comprehend. There is no victory in sight for the US or Israel, they will bleed out slowly dying a humiliating death.

The death of Khamenei will probably be of little importance for the Iranians, even before the conflict he was talking of his willingness to be martyred in the coming conflict and his expectation to die, so he presumably made succession plans.  The fact that the Iranians are still attacking US bases in 7 Arab countries proves that at the very least the targeting authority was delegated to the local missile commanders so they can operate without central command (at least for a few days, a week tops, before arms replenishment needs would necessitate at interactions with a logistical command center).  We should have a better idea on the overall situation in 3-4 days (so Tuesday/Wednesday) If the Iranian government is still fighting after a week then the US logistical system will start to breakdown and they will be forced to reduce their level of their attacks.  The Arab states are unlikely to attack Iran directly unless they are certain Iran is about to collapse (they will probably keep their militaries close at hand to protect themselves from their own citizenry).
From Trump’s perspective Khamenei’s death is the perfect off-road for the crisis, he can say he killed the evil Khamenei and he can declare victory and end the war.  However, that depends on the Iranians being willing to effectively surrender to the US and after the US killed more than 100 schoolgirls in a deliberate attack, that seems unlikely.   More likely, the Iranians keep fighting and after a week the Americans will be forced to abandon their bases in the 7 Arab countries (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrein, Emirates, Kuwait, Iraq & Jordan) that Iran is targeting (the US forces will move to Turkey, Egypt and Israel).  Iran will keep pounding these Arab states and after a month or so pressure will build on these states to either make concessions to Iran (i.e. bar the return of US troops) or face potential internal unrest or even revolution (Bahrain is especially vulnerable to this).  The US will then face pressure to end the conflict with Iran from the Arab states, Russia, China and Indonesia.  Also note that in a few weeks Russia will be launching it’s spring offensive and since the US is now occupied with Iran, it will be unlikely to support the Ukrainians to anywhere near the degree it did last year – meaning the US will be faced with a crisis on two fronts (Russia & Iran).  The Americans have no ground forces in the Middle East to launch an invasion of Iran and it will take at least 6 months to move the necessary troops into the region.  But even that is academic because the Americans would need at least 800,000 troops (which they don’t have) and they would then need to move those ground troops from Isreal to Iran (more than 3000 miles) with no logistical support (because they evacuated their bases) all the while the Iranians would be presumably bombing them.  So this entire campaign will be missile war which the US is logistically incapable of winning .  To put this in perspective, Russia has fired an estimated 20,000 missiles (and 100,000 drones) into Ukraine since 2020.  The US has roughly  650 tomahawk missiles in the region and Iran is roughly x3 larger than Ukraine (Iran is larger than German, France, Spain & the UK combined), with a population of 90 million.  A straight military victory over Iran is impossible with the forces America has at it’s disposal in the region.  The US can ONLY win if the Iranian government collapses due to an internal revolt.  I don’t know how stable the Iranian government is, but historically speaking, foreign invasion tends to strengthen governments unless they suffer a humiliating military defeat.
But again, this will all depend on if Iran can maintain roughly this level of defense and offense beyond the next week.  One thing I am certain of, is unless the US achieves a dominating, decisive victory within the next week, the US will probably never return to at least some of these bases it has been forced to evacuate from and others will be severely reduced in size going forward (not even the US is going to spend another 1 billion dollars to build a long range air defense radar system if the prior one was destroyed within the first 12 hours of a battle)

The IRGC has almost completely switched to the Chinese BeiDou navigation system for targeting missiles and drones, which makes them resistant to US electronic interference.

https://t.me/EurasianChoice/58178
Technically not correct.  Beidou radio signals are quite similar to those of Western GPS and Russian GLONASS and can be jammed or even spoofed in the same manner.  The Iranians themselves are well aware of the susceptibility of GPS-type systems to “spoofing” (fake signals), having used this technique to hijack an American RQ-170 flying over Iran from its base in Afghanistan.

Exactly, and all the while China starves the US Military Industrial Complex of all the critical minerals etc. needed to replace all the weapons and munitions being used up at a rapid rate in the attack;

“Over the past five years, the United States has gone through an estimated 15 years’ production of Tomahawk missiles. This rate is unsustainable for US national security .. around 50-90 new Tomahawk missiles are barely produced each year”. And that’s without the Chinese export control constraints.

https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/785-million-later-us-navy-still-cant-reload-tomahawk-missile-launchers-bw-010926

And they can’t even make the radars for the F-35 for lack of the gallium nitride. If this lasts weeks it will be the last hurrah for the US military, between the expenditures in Ukraine and the Middle East its weapons and munitions stocks will be well below critical levels. With many years needed to replenish, if even possible with the Chinese export restrictions.

From Tehran’s perspective, the “social contract” that allowed these sultanates to exist—trading regional neutrality for Western protection—is officially dead. The February 28 strikes proved that these bases aren’t just “defensive”; they are the launchpads for decapitation strikes against the Iranian state.

The “wisdom” of keeping these monarchies around has vanished for Iran for several cold, hard reasons:

  • Iran now views places like Qatar (Al Udeid) and Bahrain (5th Fleet) not as sovereign neighbors, but as literal extensions of U.S. territory.
  • The IRGC has shifted its doctrine: if a missile is launched from a sultanate’s soil, the sultanate is held legally and militarily responsible.
  • Why fly a drone 1,000 miles to Israel when you can hit the nerve center of U.S. operations just 150 miles across the Gulf?
  • If they can’t sell oil because the Strait of Hormuz is closed, their “thriving” economies collapse instantly.
  • Iran knows that without oil revenue, these families cannot pay their mercenary armies or keep their populations quiet.
  • While Qatar shares the North Dome/South Pars gas field with Iran, Tehran can now argue that a “shared” resource shouldn’t benefit a host of American bombers.
  • In places like Bahrain and parts of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, there are significant Shia populations who have been suppressed for decades. Iran no longer has any incentive to keep these populations calm. By broadcasting the images of “girl children” killed in the U.S. strikes, they are effectively igniting an internal revolt against the Sultans.
  • With the Houthis successfully closing the Red Sea and striking Eilat and Tel Aviv, Iran has proven that its proxies can strangle the sultanates’ trade routes from the other side.

  • With the Houthis successfully closing the Red Sea and striking Eilat and Tel Aviv, Iran has proven that its proxies can strangle the sultanates’ trade routes from the other side.
If the “Sultan families” fail because they can’t sell oil and can’t protect their people from Iranian missiles, Iran wins a massive strategic victory without even needing a ground invasion. They simply let the internal economic collapse do the work.
