Moon of Alabama Brecht quote

RIP Ali Khamenei

“Sometimes, I imagine myself dying from an accident. Or maybe a fever. And my heart becomes so full of sadness: that the chance for competing for paradise [i.e., martyrdom] will be taken away from me that way.”
Ajatollah Ali Khamenei – (source)

The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran was martyred on Saturday morning, together with other officials, by an Israeli airstrike on his home in Tehran. May he rest in peace.

‘Western’ observers make the mistake of seeing highly reverted Shia leaders as mere clerics. They are way more than that.

First and foremost they are jurists and judges with a deep philosophical knowledge of the law. The title Ajatollah signifies a high academic ranking of an Shia-Islam scholar. Ajatollahs are examples for those living around them. They are extraordinary people who should be emulated and who’s advices are to be followed.

The system of the Islamic Republic was build with redundancies (archived) to be able to survive external and internal shocks:

For those who led the 1979 revolution, problems with leadership change were not just ideas—they were real warnings from history. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini did not eliminate the supreme authority; instead, he made it part of the system. The intense debates of 1979 about how to avoid past patterns of collapse led to new answers in Iran’s constitution: Each major body was created to solve a specific risk exposed by history.

The Guardian Council was formed to guard against political drift and to keep laws in line with Islamic principles. The Assembly of Experts took on the task of selecting and supervising the supreme leader, to prevent a concentration of power without oversight. The Expediency Council was established to resolve institutional deadlock, ensuring the system could continue to function even when high-level disagreements arose. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the intelligence agencies were meant to secure the revolution internally and externally, checking both foreign threats and domestic unrest.

Iran is frequently portrayed as a political order bound tightly to individuals. Yet the architecture that emerged after 1979 was formed by a different logic, one founded in the revolutionary experience itself. Khomeini captured this hierarchy in a remark often cited within Iran’s political elite: “Preserving the Islamic Republic is more important than preserving any individual, even if that individual were the Imam of the Age”—a reference to Shiism’s 12th Imam, Muhammad al-Mahdi.

It is still unclear whether the system will always follow this principle. But one should expect a change in leadership in Tehran to be treated less as an ending and more as a chance for the country’s institutions to show they can survive.

I am confident that the Islamic Republic will survive this test. ‘Regime change’ in Tehran, which Trump seems to dream of (archived), is unlikely to happen.

Meanwhile the Strait of Hormuz is closed and the war of attrition continues …

Think of the UAE – Abu Dhabi and Dubai – centuries of corruption dealing in contraband goods, nowadays by speed boats across the shortest crossing with Persia. Who was dealing in sanctioned Saddam oil? UAE as middleman between Israel and the GCC states … closest of cooperation with intelligence NSA-MI6-Mossad. Major buyer of Israel intrusion software for tracking dissisents.

Iran’s financial deals with the global market ran through banks of the Emirates … when necessary gold bullion was used … untraceable, ask Türkiye … setting up gold mining in former Dutch Surinam … gold-washed through Switzerland, think Glencore … quite profitable to make the rich richer … a 5 letter word: GREED.

Remember VP Cheney … somehow Halliburton located HQ to the Emirates … cover-up deals with the Islamic Republic of Iran. You and I and hundreds of millions suffer because of “capitalism” of the insane wealth of a few. Erik Prince too had plenty of contracts with the rich Arab states … think mercenaries for the Salvador Option in Yemen.

UAE and KSA hate one another … perhaps MBS is a better dealmaker than thought by me. An 25 year veteran Aramco employee, US Citizen, confided he would get out of the country on the very first flight by this kind of unrest … yesterday’s “friend” in Saudi Arabia could not be trusted. I also am expecting this war to last a long while.  Multiple years.  In the first few days of the conflict, Iran has done remarkably well.  Their strategy of going after the US bases in West Asia sounds obvious now, but damn how did they come up with THAT.  The behind the scenes coordination of Iran, China, and Russia has shown itself to be quite formidable.
Posted by: Woke American | Mar 2 2026 17:50 utc | 1403

In this war the parties have following ressoures:
US and Israel have:
1. A lot of ammunition for bombing Iran and a lot of airlpanes to do the job.
2. Satellite surveillance.
3. CIA and Mossad for detecting Iran leaders.
4. Limited air defense ammuntion (the talk is for about two weeks)
5. Nukes

Iran has:
1. A vast amount of drone and rockets, the more advanced even not yet used.
2. As Shiites the willingness to suffer and for martyrdom – and to replace killed leaders.

When the US/Israel air defence is depleted, and Iran has still ammunition, thy can continue to beat US bases and Israel really hard until they beg for peace. Even now, there is a fair amount of destruction. And they are not accustomed to real damage and casualties. US may even give up some bases.
The US/Israel crazies could opt for nukes. In both cases the war will not take too long – or in case of the nukes it could lead to a world war.

Posted by: Johann Siegfried von Oberndorf | Mar 2 2026 18:26 utc | 1406

Something curious is happening.

The IAEA and its director, the one who doesn’t know who is bombing the Zaporozhye nuclear facility in Ukraine, are worried about possible radioactive leaks after the bombing of Iranian sites by Israel and the US, and are demanding access to “assess the situation.”

Aside from the hypocrisy of this position, one remarkable thing is that no one is talking about the case of the Dimona nuclear facility, targeted by several Iranian missiles.

What’s going on with Dimona nuclear “research facility” that is supposed to supply for the Israeli nuclear bombs

Because if the damage is significant, and yet there’s no radioactivity, it can only mean one thing.
That another big lie has been perpetuated for years.

Inquiring minds would like to know.

=====

A gaggle of American Jew economists went over to help Russia out of the goodness of their hearts, and before you knew it the entire wealth of the Russian people had been transferred to a gaggle of Russian Jews. A few such as Khodorkovsky were Rothschild agents. Putin relieved those ones of their funds. The rest, happy to belong to the Russian Jew crust that now owned it all must be those who chose to ‘play ball’ in your words.

You seem to know some of the score. Do read Solzhenitsyn’s Two Hundred Years Together to appreciate the full horror of the community that killed off the upper half of the Russian population (“Kill the best of the gentiles in time of war; crush the brain of the best of serpents.” – Masechet Soferim 15:10) now owning the wealth of the country.

You think that letting (favored) Jews steal everything is a brilliant way to encourage investment?

The Iranians are shiites and from their history they are used to Martyrdom and suffering.

Also think about the Houthis and the Palestinians. Muslims do not fear dead and continue to fight for their cause.
Also Iran is a vast contry with large Mountains. It cannot be bombed into oblivion. Even Jemen has continued the war against US/Saudi Arabia for eight years.

Is this your fucking proxy war now?
Anyway, Russia and the US are making their moves, which is an elegant way to read the Pakistan-Taliban clash. While the US openly backs Pakistan’s “open war” campaign the Taliban enjoys Russia’s formal recognition as Afghanistan’s government plus Moscow’s repeated calls for de-escalation and mediation offers.

Posted by: Princess Bodica | Mar 2 2026 18:38 utc | 1412

Putin as usual seems to be playing his usual backstabbing games:  talking to the head of the UAE, he supposedly called for de- escalation in a situation where it is clearly up to attacker to de-escalate, where the one being attacked cannot deescalate even if it wants to; and calling for diplomacy in a situation where diplomacy has been repeatedly used by the attacking side as cover for assassination.

@1425 Patroklos

Hegseth – “We didn’t start this war but under President Trump we’re finishing it”

Not possible to get a sober update.

A (quite limited) view:

US is both active over Iran, as well as withdrawing assets to further afield. So far degradation and assassinations.

B52s and similar are now target wherever parked, including Cyprus. There is a play off between e.g. Cyprus (hence EU) joining offensive or just recognising any attacks as targeting US and allies.

The US promises increased bombardment, says has supplies for that, including sending troops.

“Israel” is targeting Lebanon and Syria resistance, Lebanon government sides with US.

The allied arab states are looking stupid in various ways.

Kuwait warns Iraq (Iraq) over any invasion plans of Kuwait. Others are losing their economy.

So it is an emptying out of the region, degradation of the region as well as Iran, and promises of incrementation of hostility.

Iran has mostly used lower grade missiles so far, Yemen has remained quiet. Disruptions across the region following US hostilities are occuring.

And this is a day into the conflict only.

Assume the US will increase the level of its bombardments, already heavy ordinance appears to have been used, but is fraught for being reliant on limited method of delivery.

Not really able to add much…what you see going on…

From today’s Haaretz:

Iranian missile hits southern Israel, wounding 19 people

An Iranian missile hit southern Israel’s Be’er Sheva Monday morning, wounding 19 people, Israeli medics said. The strike created a large crater in the city center, damaging many buildings, a senior rescue official said, adding that his colleagues were working to extract people from the wreckage.■ An initial IDF investigation released on Monday has found that a bomb shelter in central Israel that was hit by an Iranian missile on Sunday – resulting in the deaths of nine people – met official safety standards. Meanwhile, Israeli airlines El Al and Air Haifa said that they’ll launch rescue flights from destinations across the U.S., Europe and Asia to bring Israelis back home as soon as Ben-Gurion Airport reopens.■ In Iran, the Fars news agency reported that at least 555 people have been killed as a result of joint Israeli-U.S. attacks, citing the Red Crescent.Along with the desire to see the Ayatollahs’ regime collapse, a litany of unflattering polls and an election that’s just around the corner played a key part in Netanyahu’s decision-making process. “As far as Netanyahu is concerned, the road to the polling stations runs through Washington and Tehran,” a minister close to Netanyahu told Haaretz recently. “Destroying the Iranian axis of evil is the move that Netanyahu assumed, already after October 7, would rehabilitate his image,” the minister added, writes Jonathan Lis

Regarding possible attack on U.S. base in Djibouti, nothing in the news.  But if the base is attacked, the attack would likely come from Yemen, not Iran.

The base, if I have it right, is Camp Lemonier.  A former? French base, Camp Lemonier is on one side of the airport.  The other side is civilian.  It does have long range aircraft – spec ops C-130s and Navy P8s.  I suppose it could take tankers or such if necessary.

CrazyCanuck #1139, “at the Qatari base Al-Udeid a radar AN/FPS-132 worth $1 billion was indeed struck.”

I assume you’re talking about the one claimed to have been destroyed. Do you have any proof not counting the AI-generated “before and after” fake? If some bored nobody made the fake, that leaves open the question of whether it was hit or not. If someone had the ability to hit and destroy it, and did so, he wouldn’t have bothered to make obviously-fake ‘proof’.

So what does it mean in reality when a David starts to beat Goliath? It means that Iran is playing a Biblical role that the biblicist MOTU have assigned it and a role to which Iran, obviously, is only too happy to play.

Thank you for the reply, Reante! I feel very lonely in not accepting “they’re stupid!” as the big answer, so it’s really good to see your take on this. As an atheist (East bloc upbringing), I don’t see a role for scripture or any form of predetermination. I do agree with your Degrowth point: that has been nurtured for a long time in academia, media, politics. For me, Corona (which, again, isn’t really about the virus and all about the “measures”) was part of the degrowth agenda.

Not clear to me why you connect Degrowth with the “Big Nuclear Scare. Do you mean that the Cold War’s nuclear bomb scaremongering has been replaced by global warming and similar scares? I get those.

I get that the truth that an Ashkenazi-led global operating system scares you old dog anti-imperialists more than anything, but that is obviously what we have.

I am one of your old dog anti-imperialists 🙂 In particular, I don’t believe in a global operating system: instead of a master (plan), I see it as a dynamical system where the most influential members get to update the coefficients — they will do so for their own benefit without formal alignment. (In fact, there is often divergence among the elites / owner classes.)

Whatever, together with a later reply of yours, I get your point: Zionism/Israel has played its part during the Growth phase and is now being dismantled. I have no way of checking the validity of this claim but it’s thinkable. Given that some Washington / Jerusalem decisions seem so arbitrary, your suggestion is a model to check reality against. Thank you for sharing!

They made their choice.
They are Israelis now.
Right? (/sn)
I don’t buy it.
Powerful Jews (in both Russia and Occupied Palestine?) have some means to squeeze Putin’s balls. Not their ethnicity—something else.
I must say that when I read Moshe Arens’s memoir, In Defense of Israel, which includes quite a lot of material on the transfer of Soviet Jews to Israel (and the role of the US in facilitating this) I had a strong feeling that this (nasty, selfish, dishonest, Holocaust-bleating-for-special-treatment) group, raised in the Soviet system, would be fateful for Israel, and others. Definitely not worth modern Russia’s choosing the wrong side in re Palestine/Gaza and Iran.

My Moscow correspondent agrees with me.
More precisely, he agrees with the analysis put forth recently here (material on Jews/Russia sort of near the end):

“20% of Israel’s Jews are descendants of Soviet Jews (including Russians).” That’s the same as saying “20% of Israel’s Jews are genocidal Nazi-Zionists descended from Soviet Zionists (including Russians).”
Put that to the Russian population and explain what will likely happen to Russia if Iran falls for some reason and Israel is not contained/destroyed, and ask them what should be done. If the Russian population is of the kind I think it is, the answer will come quickly and decisively.
Another solution? Call back those descendants of the “Russian Jews.” Tell them to abandon Israel because their safety cannot be guaranteed. Those who return, fine: they will show that they do not unconditionally support the government of the ultimate genocidal leader and deserve a chance; those who don’t, well…have made their choice for their true homeland and must suffer the consequences.
Putin is in a dilemma? Dilemma my ass!

The current best scientific estimate is that the “Khazarian hypothesis”—the theory that Ashkenazi Jews are primarily descended from a mass conversion of the Khazars in the 8th–9th centuries—is
unsupported by genetic, historical, and archaeological evidence and is widely regarded as a myth
Modern genomic studies consistently show that Ashkenazi Jews share substantial ancestry with Levantine (Middle Eastern) populations, with further, later admixture from Southern European/Mediterranean populations, specifically around the 1st millennium CE, but no detectable, significant genetic contribution from the North Caucasus/Khazar region.

Study findings which are suspiciously like what the Zionists would want them to say (and wouldn’t hesitate to  force them to say) so that most of the Israelis can falsely claim to be “semitic” despite originating to the north-east of what became the Khazar empire whereafter, like the Turks, they moved south west. The Sephardics are the ones starting from Mediterranian areas.
A lot of the “Sephardic” source would have long ago become either Christian or Moslem, so are semitic but not Jews. Hence the Palestinian population.

“New thread is/should be china, iran attack reasons, not Iran operational”

…And this one is in respect of Khamenei.

Not sure why b has not offered an Iran/Middle-East thread, I suppose we will just have to put up with whatever confusion…

Go tell bikers their moms are sluts and see if you can get back in one piece. Your point?
The only reason christians are not like that (anymore) is that they eventually lost their iron grip on european societies when scientific discoveries and imperial wars showed most of their bullshit for what it was.

Not exactly. “Sefarad” is a biblical term that points to the Iberian peninsula specifically. Sepharads are Al-Andalus jews who scattered across the mediterranean following the Spanish Reconquista from the 12th to the 16th century. Jews in conquered/liberated Cordoban areas were either forced to convert or chased out. So technically they are mostly descended from Berbers and Punics from the north african Maghreb, and mixed centuries later with Iberians, Arabs, Italics, Greeks, Turks, Levantines, etc.

I have a technical question.  Can Iran have a ground-to-air missile that can down a bomber flying at 40,000 ft?

So far the Iranian attacks have been against the US, and the damage has been peripheral to US interests, but highly incendiary to US pride.

Trump has deceived himself into believing that diplomatic relations with Muslim countries  indicate deference.
Diplomatic gestures never indicate deference, but Trump’s narcissism has misunderstood .

Saudi Arabia has zero loyalty to US UK or Israel. In Arab eyes the US and Israel is entirely to blame, and entirely responsible for their own actions against Iran,  and USUKIS  must face the consequences of attacking Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during negotiations,  entirely on their own.

USUKIS has dissolved the Abraham Accords,  the financial contracts , the security contracts, the banking contracts between the Arab Monarchies and USUKIS.

It’s pure wishful thinking by Netanyahu and Trump that it’s business as usual from now on.
USUKIS zionism  has no self-respect, but Islamic countries do.

Trump is unable to conceive  of honour.
If he had any concept of honor it would be cancelled by his hatred of Islam.
Genghis Khan  attacked Islam because Muslims had killed his envoys who had diplomatic immunity even at that time.

Islam will not forgive Trump for killing the Ayatollah during ongoing negotiations.
It is a red rag to a bull by Khazar Rubio and Khazar Netanyahu.

The whole of the World will be united against the Khazar Fake Jews for this deliberate insult to civilisation.

This is what Khazars do : Break Rules.

@Lemming/1497: Thank you for confirming that Muslims are as dumb as criminal bikers. That was one of my points 🙂

Now lets handle them accordingly, perhaps the way El Salvador handles their criminals.

Paranoia doesnt make you right. I have followed that debate and there is scant evidence for the extent of the Khazar theory that covered a substantial part of the population. But I have seen it suggested that Netanyahu supports the Khazar theory. That doesnt convince me that Netanyahu is anything but an opportunist maybe aiming to emigrate the jews to Ukraine?
