U.S.-Iran – A War Of Aggressions Which Aims Can Not Be Achieved

Yesterday the Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, the mediator in talks between the U.S. and Iran, revealed that Iran had offered unprecedented restrictions of its nuclear program to prevent a war.

During a CBS interview he explained:

MINISTER ALBUSAIDI: I am confident, and in my assessment of the way the talks are going, I think there is, really I can see that the peace deal is within our reach.

MARGARET BRENNAN: A peace deal?

MINISTER ALBUSAIDI: Yes, is within our reach, if we just allow diplomacy the space it needs to get there. Because I don’t think any alternative to diplomacy is going to solve this problem.

MINISTER ALBUSAIDI: The single most important achievement, I believe, is the agreement that Iran will never, ever have a nuclear material that will create a bomb. This is, I think, a big achievement. This is something that is not in the old deal that was negotiated during President Obama’s time. This is something completely new. It really makes the enrichment argument less relevant, because now we are talking about zero stockpiling. And that is very, very important, because if you cannot stockpile material that is enriched then there is no way you can actually create a bomb, whether you enrich or don’t enrich. And I think this is really something that has been missed a lot by the media, and I want to clarify that from the standpoint of a mediator.

MARGARET BRENNAN: So explain that. So the enriched material, things that could be used as nuclear fuel for a bomb, you’re saying Iran would not keep on their own soil?

MINISTER ALBUSAIDI: They would give it up.

To give up stockpiling enriched material of various grades is a concession that Iran has never before made. It would indeed make it impossible for it to create a nuclear bomb.

The U.S. however was not interested in a nuclear deal. Hours after Albusadi’s interview it joined Israel in a “pre-emptive” war on Iran.

jeremy scahill @jeremyscahill – 7:18 UTC · Feb 28, 2026

The term “preemptive” is pure propaganda. The U.S. once again used the veneer of negotiations as a cover to bomb Iran. Tehran had just offered terms that went far beyond the 2015 nuclear deal. What was preempted was diplomacy. The same propaganda tactics used in 2003 Iraq war.

Badral Abusaidi was left to expressed his disappointment:

Badr Albusaidi – بدر البوسعيدي @badralbusaidi – 12:04 UTC · Feb 28, 2026

I am dismayed. Active and serious negotiations have yet again been undermined. Neither the interests of the United States nor the cause of global peace are well served by this. And I pray for the innocents who will suffer. I urge the United States not to get sucked in further. This is not your war.

U.S. President Trump thought differently. In an 8 minutes long speech (vid) he announced several war aims like the destruction of Iran’s missiles, the destruction of its navy and to prevent the country from acquiring nuclear weapons it does not want. He called on the armed forces of Iran to lay down their weapons and for its people to overthrow its government.

For the Islamic Republic the war is thereby not about mere defense – but existential.

As none of Trump’s strategic objectives is likely to be achieved one might already argue that the U.S. has little chance but to lose this war.

So far the exchange of strikes has run along its predictable course.

The U.S. and Israel launched stand-off cruise-missiles against political and military targets in Iran. The compound of the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Tehran, the Ministry of Intelligence, the Ministry of Defense, the Iranian Atomic Energy Agency, the Parchin military complex were hit. Iran’s leadership had moved to safe places and was not affected by the strikes. A missile destroyed the house of the former president Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, who has no role in the current government, and killed three of his guards. Several missiles, says Iran, have hit an elementary school in Minab, south Iran, and killed up to 60 children.

Iran responded by attacking U.S. military installations in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates with hundreds of drones and shorter range missiles. A long range U.S. radar in Qatar was hit as were U.S. Navy fuel depots in Bahrain. Several salvos of tens of medium range missiles were fired against U.S positions in Jordan as well as against Israel.

These first salvos with older, less accurate missiles are intended to draw out U.S. air-defenses and to entice them to expend their limited missiles supplies. There have been reports of several explosions in various places in the Middle East but it is too early to assess if these are the consequences of falling debris or real intended results.

One target hit by the U.S. side was the headquarter of the Hashid Shaabi popular mobilization forces in Iraq. It killed several people. Following that Hashid Shaabi announced to join the fight on Iran’s side. Missiles have hit U.S. positions in Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan.

The Houthi in Yemen as well as Hizbullah in Lebanon are expected to also join in the fight.

The exchange of missile strikes is expected to continue over several days. the U.S. will try to eliminate Iranian missile launchers and production facilities. Iran will try to exhaust U.S. missile defenses to then launch its more precise and effective missiles against Israel and major U.S. (naval) targets. Iran already claims to have hit a U.S. supply ship.

But Iran’s main instrument in this war will be its control over the transport of 20% of the world’s oil supplies.

It has just announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Michael A. Horowitz @michaelh992 – 15:30 UTC · Feb 28, 2026

#Breaking an official with the EU naval mission Aspides says vessels have been receiving transmission from Iran’s revolutionary guards saying no ship is allowed to pass the strait of Hormuz

Iran can control the Straits by simply firing land-based anti ship missiles.

By Monday fuel prices will have gone through the roof.

Oil prices are the major pressure point Iran has to cause effects within the U.S.

One wonders how long President Trump can sustain the war if the price of gasoline goes up and stays high.

Trump has given the impression that he wants the US to have an industry etc but what more than talk was it? I get the impression that the whole west wants the system to continue with a world police who prevents anyone from rising and competing. Israel fits into that scheme of things.

We’re in for surprises if Iran, given those new weapons that they talked about, turns against the US Navy and sinks one or two of the carriers. This would be like a slap in Trump’s and Netanyahu’s face, and if it happens, the two morons are likely to further escalate and go nuclear. This is about how I judge what little self-control each of them has.
Posted by: grunzt | Feb 28 2026 20:06 utc | 208
US Navy officers I know and asked about this said that Iran would have to get very, very lucky to even sink a destroyer. A carrier is unlikely to sink from a single hit even in the unlikely event that it IS hit.

If you stop thinking of this as “We want to invade Iran” and start thinking along the lines of “We will disrupt trade and cause chaos,” then things start to make a lot of sense.

Agree. Iran is a Jenga tower, and USrael is pulling out one block at a time. This might not be the block that knocks it over, but the tower wobbles more and more each time.

Israel has lost any credibility it had with the genocide of the Palestinians, it would look ridiculous with this if untrue. But, maybe that’s how empires fail, into farse.

When it’s an existential war like this (and when you bomb the Leader, it’s obviously existential), all that crap goes away.

Posted by: Caliman | Feb 28 2026 20:06 utc | 209

Saying “existential” is unlikely to invoke a magic spell … that “crap” does not go away. International trade is not about weird people in glass towers exchanging tokens for funsies … it’s about real people and genuine demand. Iran’s major imports are: wheat, rice, maize and soy … in other words food staples … basic carbs and protein. They aren’t completely stupid so they no doubt have stockpiles, but probably only a few months.

This means the nation is dependant on imports just to put meals on tables … the leaders won’t be leading anyone or anything if the people have empty stomachs, staring at empty food bowls. Not just the people … those basic staples go towards feeding animals as well … yes for a while starving people can eat the starving animals, but they will hit a limit.

Will Russia, China, etc offer an unlimited line of credit to Iran? Maybe … I dunno … Russia isn’t in a great position to do so right now. China might show great patience and comradeship, but they might not.

From an Italian-Russian journalist, presently living in the Middle East:

To give you an idea of how Arabs react to attacks on American military targets on their territory: Bahraini citizens are filming the bombing of an American naval base on their territory and joyfully shouting “Hit them! Hit them!”

The Anglo-Saxons have annoyed everyone in the Middle East: Arabs and Persians, Sunnis and Shiites, poor and rich, men and women, young and old. For this reason, everyone is rejoicing that Iran is finally hitting the Americans.

Trump can’t do a regime change in Shia Iran. Even if the present supreme leader is killed, another one will come, whatever his name.

The Islamic Republic is not a “one-man show” in the way a traditional military dictatorship might be. It is built on a
bureaucratic-theocratic architecture designed specifically to survive the loss of individual leaders.
If the U.S. or any external power were to target the leadership, they would likely find that the system has deep “redundancy” built in.

The system has a constitutional “autopilot.” If the Supreme Leader dies or is killed, the Assembly of Experts (a body of 88 clerics) is legally mandated to elect a successor immediately. They have already survived the transition from Khomeini to Khamenei, proving the mechanism works.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is more than a military; it is a massive economic and political corporate entity.

  • Even if the clerical leadership were weakened, the IRGC holds the guns and the money.
  • They view themselves as the “Guardians of the Revolution” regardless of who the specific individual leader is. To them, the “Regime” is an idea and a power structure, not just a person.

In military theory, “Death Ground” is a place where an army has no way to retreat, so it fights with desperate ferocity. Because the Iranian leadership views their struggle as religious/existential, they believe:

  • In Shia history, the martyrdom of leaders (like Imam Hussein) often strengthens the movement rather than ending it.
  •  The “Axis of Resistance” (proxies in Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen) is designed to function even if the head of the snake in Tehran is under pressure.

Even Iranians who dislike the current government often become fiercely patriotic when a foreign power (especially the U.S. or Israel) attacks. An external attempt at regime change often has the “rally ’round the flag” effect, where people put aside their grievances with the clerics to defend the soil of Iran against an invader.

“Khamenei son in law and daughter in law were killed in today’s strikes – Maysam Mozafar a member of Tehran city council said”

I have compared Trump to Emperor Hirohito and the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor
 – Oui  239

I don’t think the comparison fair.  The motivation for Japan was driven by national security concerns, no foreign power directed Japan to attack what is now known as Goyimstan.  In this case, Goyimstan, [formerly know as the US], attacked Iran in direct contravention to it’s own security and well being at the explicit direction of a foreign government.  Israeli/Israeli-American’s sole motivation in ordering Goyimstan, [formerly know as the US], to attack Iran is to recreate an empire that never existed.

Conclusion, while not a supporter of Imperial Japan by any stretch of the imagination, it’s clear the Japanese Imperialist had a far more honorable intention than present day Goyimstan [formerly know as the US]

If the Supreme Leader has-been killed, the US is not prepared for the consequences. He was the voice of Islamic moderation. The IRGC hardliners want to be vicious like the Russian MOD wants to be vicious.

These military people want to end fights quickly and decisively. The Ayatollah was more concerned with Quranic limits. Islam isn’t weak, but it does seek to minimize death.

If he was killed, that will make it almost possible for Trump to end this by agreement.

Posted by: LoveDonbass | Feb 28 2026 21:09 utc | 256

You need to look more carefully at what Iran was proposing.  They were NOT agreeing to stop all enriching and dismantle enriching facilities.  They were agreeing to turn over “stockpiles”.  I.e. “trust me, this is all of it”.  Oh, and “don’t worry…when/if we make more we will turn it over.  Trust us.”

It’s a face saving concession, not a substantive one.

And…I’m not even in favor of bombing them.  But…you need to understand how the worm turns in “diplomacy”.

Now and especially if the Supreme Leader has been killed, the only way the IR will survive is by inflicting enough pain on the other side so that they force the USrael to stop. The main way to do that is economical.

Sorry, I really underestimated the value, both military and monetary, of the radar destroyed in Qatar. (One of the four major ones).  This from RT. What the heck, it’s only US dollars.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has announced that it destroyed a sophisticated American radar system stationed in Qatar as part of its retaliatory attacks targeting US bases and assets in the region.
A Saturday statement from the IRGC said the FP132 radar system, which was targeted in the attack, had a range of 5,000 km and had unique equipment to counter ballistic missiles.
According to a report by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency in 2013, the radar system was worth around $1.1 billion.
The statement said the system was “completely annihilated” in the massive missile attack.

They will unfortunately. Iran will end their attacks the moment the US does. At this point it’s all so predictable.
Don’t think so this time. I get the feeling Iran suckered Washington into launching this attack as an obvious aggressor rather than in response to Iranian retaliation against Israel so now the United States, the Great Satan, is the primary protagonist and Israel just a bit player. I suspect that Iran made that offer of handing over all its enriched uranium because it knew the United States was about to attack and Washington is predictable enough that if you give way on something Washington will just want more. Iran will ride out the limited storm as it has forced American attack aircraft to fly further causing increasing wear and tear on the aircraft and their crews. The Islamic government in Tehran just needs to survive to show it has defeated both Washington and Tel Aviv with the hope that Washington gives up on the real loser, Tel Aviv.
This is nothing to do with chess, 3-D or 64-D, but everything to do with good war fighting something the United States and Israel really don’t understand.

The media is spinning the narrative that Iranian supreme leader is dead. Regardless Scub missiles and shaheed drones will continue flying.  Can the US and Israel have enough Air Defense to counter Iranian 5 decades of stockpiling?

In Dune, at the end of the first book, Muad’dib forces the Emperor’s surrender by threatening to destroy the spice (metaphor for oil ironically) without which the Empire would collapse and trillions would die.

“The people who can destroy a thing, they control it.”

Hormuz doesn’t destroy oil supply completely. The economic damage Iran did to Israel last year, to the UAE, KSA, and others today is devastating economically.

Basically, Iran’s missiles and drones give them veto power over the entire region.

Without a nuke.

Thanks for your reply, buddy. I say all of March because it will take that long to properly pulverize the Zionists so the Palestinians can be freed to retake their lands. karlof1 | Feb 28 2026 18:17 utc | 102
Sorry folks, as much as I respect Karlof and his contributions here as well as on substack, I politely disagree.
Certainly, Iran is able to deal quite a lot of damage to both U.S. facilities in the Mideast, and Israel, I doubt a lot it would suffice to destroy Israel and give the Palestinians the upper hand, neither in Gaza/West Bank, much less in historical Palestine as a whole.
Iran is waging an aerial war, no less than the US and Israel do. And that is not likely to deal Israel a defeat causing it to abandon occupation much less dissolving the zionist state proper.

It’s just a show for Iran.  If they actually threaten Israel, Tehran will be nuked and 10 million people will die.  The USA has done it twice.  The Iranians don’t want to be the third victim.  Given Khamenei refused to defend Iran with nuclear weapons, he should surrender to Trump.  He should offer himself up for trial to save Iran.

It does not mean that missiles won’t be sent to Israel.  Just that the leadership of the Arab nations and the US military bases in these nations take precedence.  I had to ponder this a while.  But… only for a short while.
