Moon of Alabama Brecht quote
January 6, 2026
Why ‘Might Makes Right’ Is Dangerous For All of Us

Jaqcues Baud, who was recently sanctioned by the European Union, is lamenting on Dialog Works that –  The World Is Entering a Lawless Era (vid).

He is right of course, but late.

International law, developed over centuries, has been broken by the U.S. and other imperial forces ever since it was established.

But after World War II such breaches, even when obvious, were clad in propaganda which claimed that each of those was about the enforcement of higher values. Villains had to be fought, dictators opposed, evil communists had to be prevented from stealing from their people. The old and new neo-conservatives were masters in this. The blatant imperial attacks of Iraq and Afghanistan were sold as good men’s missions to bring democracy to the downtrodden and suppressed poor people in those countries. We had to liberate their women.

That propaganda that covered the brutal wars of conquest under the mantle of democracy promotion held up for a while. It served two purposes.

It allowed U.S. vassals to justify their co-operation with the imperialists. It also allowed a significant part of the ‘western’ populations to still feel good about their countries. When the wars went southward and losses increased they acknowledged that waging those wars were bad. But the consoling feeling was that at least “We Meant Well“, as one of those imperialists ransacking Iraq titled his memoir.

It worked for a while for some people. The Iraq war was protested against in Europe. Germany and France rejected the war and Congress renamed french fries into freedom fries.

But even their moral high ground has further deteriorated since.

The decade long dirty war against Syria was supported by all NATO countries. The 2014 Nazi-coup in Kiev and the following war against the people of Donbas were patched over. Western propaganda drowned out all protests. But the doubts about these wars lingered. The propaganda was becoming too obvious.

The ongoing genocidal war on Gaza marked a turning point. The Zionist propaganda that was used to justify it was no longer effective.

When that happened the powers-that-be turned to suppression. Protest against Israel mass-murder of Palestinians were criminalized.

Jacques Baud’s correct analysis of the Ukraine war, based solely on western sources, led to the EU absurd measure to censor him.

Joe Biden blew up the NordStream pipelines. Germany and EU did not even protest the blatant attack on their economies. The issue was covered by the German government with implausible stories of six Ukrainians in a sailing raft. No one ever believed those.

Donald Trump took the last step to free the imperialists of all laws.

He does not even try to justify his illegal attack on Venezuela with any propaganda. There is no talk of imposing democracy or any other moral justification. It is pure grab of oil – mafia style – with not a damn given about the consequences or how it looks. The indictment of Maduro is just laughable. It is not a legal case any sane jurist would bring.

The European wimps have failed to condemn this. That will correctly be interpreted as them being weak which, in consequence, will put them next on the menu. They could send troops to protect Greenland from a U.S. invasion. They won’t. Trump will take it without hesitation.

The total lack of moral justification and propaganda to hide blatant breaches of international law has two dangerous consequences.

The lack of lawfulness and moral clarity will creep from international relations into domestic issues.

As Thomas Fazi warns in The Telegraph: We will regret the dawn of a ‘might makes right’ world (archived):

As Western elites discard legal and moral restraints abroad, they will feel increasingly justified in doing so at home, accelerating the erosion of constitutional safeguards and civil liberties.

This process is already well underway. The question is no longer whether the so-called rules-based order has collapsed, but how much destruction will be wrought, abroad and at home, before Western societies are forced to reckon with consequences of the lawlessness unleashed by their elites.

Arnaud Bertrand warns of a second bad consequence – the loss of internal coherence.

What will be left of the Shiny City on the Hill – the ideal the U.S. people, in all their hypocrisy, still have of themselves – when its leaders are openly disregarding all morals and laws?

Bertrand asks how this, a total disregard of all your ideals, would feel if it would happen inside of your self:

You probably fall short – we all do – but the ideals still structure your behavior. They give you something to reach for, they provide the terms in which you can be criticized – including by your own internal dialogue. They make it possible for you to do better tomorrow.

The hypocrisy – the gap between ideal and reality – is not the problem. It’s the proof that the ideal still has a hold on you, that you can still be called back to it. As the saying goes, hypocrisy is the tribute vice pays to virtue.

Now imagine you renounce all this. Imagine you stop being a hypocrite in the sense that you abandon your ideals entirely, that you start owning up to your worst self and become comfortable with your vices. You cheat on your spouse and stop pretending it bothers you. You neglect your children and make peace with it.

Have you thus become “refreshingly honest”? Maybe. But you’ve also died inside. You’ve become something deeply broken – beyond shame, beyond appeal. You’ve lost the internal architecture that makes moral life possible. The little light that said “this is not who I want to be” is extinguished.

That is what the United States just did [to itself].

The consequences of this are, frankly, terrifying. What happens when a nation stops telling itself it should be good?

When societies lose their own moral framing they dissolve into anarchy. When politicians no longer feel a need to justify their deeds the will rule by brutality. Western societies, with the U.S. in the lead, are now well on their paths towards that future.

What can be done to prevent that from happening?

There is an urgent need to call them out, to insist on moral clarity. To reject any inner impulse to walk down the same path. To live by the golden rule, to treat others as you would want to treated by them. To apply this to international relation just as down to this blogs comments.

If we don’t stick by this we won’t fare well.

The Real Reason Why the US Overthrew Venezuela

In November 2025, something extraordinary happened in Hong Kong that most people missed entirely. China issued $4 billion worth of bonds denominated in US dollars; a routine financial transaction on its surface. But when the orders came in, they totaled $118 billion. Thirty times oversubscribed. Investors from around the world were practically trampling each other to buy Chinese government debt.

Here’s the part that should make everyone pay attention: these Chinese bonds began trading at “lower yields” than United States Treasury bonds. Read that again slowly. Global investors were accepting lower returns on Chinese debt than on American debt—despite China holding a lower credit rating (A+ versus America’s AA). In the hierarchy of global finance, this is roughly equivalent to a challenger brand outselling Coca-Cola at a higher price. It simply doesn’t happen. Until it did.

Thanks for that info, Wick and Kintyre are of course in Scotland – I and many other Scots want the Yanks out of Scotland, their nuclear subs pollute or lochs, as do the English ones, and our environmental body SEPA – is powerless to do anything about it as England’s MoD supercedes them for now at least.

All of the crimes and atrocities being perpetrated by the White Western judeo-christian colonialists is the natural outcome of Jewish holy texts.
And in the rare case when they quickly allude to these crimes and atrocities all they can come up with is words like ‘crazy’ or ‘insane.’ And immediately thereafter they continue supporting the crimes of the bloodthirsty Lynch mob pedophiles. This is where we are.

Like the barbarian (hegemon) itself, you have failed to take into account a crucial fact: it is China that holds the ultimate cards, not the US. If China decides to pull the rug from under the US, then the US goes tumbling into the void, completely defenceless. If China crashes the western finance system, the US is defenceless.

Of course, China won’t take that option lightly, because it is a very drastic route – but you must understand that what the US has done is already extremely drastic, and drastic actions require drastic responses. I think China will enact strong warning actions before pulling the plug. Already they refused to supply silver to save a US bank that lost badly on the futures market (JP Morgan if I am not mistaken), and they are selling large volumes of treasury bonds and dollars. That is just a taster, not the real thing.

That last sentence is important: “And they realize, you know, the articles in the New York Times in these last days, have spelled this out that this was green lighted by Trump, the attacks on the refineries, on the shipping, as a means of increasing leverage on on Putin.” There were some like Alex Krainer who suggested the NYT was spewing out misinformation about Trump’s complicity to derail the “peace process”.

@scc and saint Jimmy
I get your point, but as long as your faithful to your code of ethics you are a moral person. Your anger comes from me violating your code of ethics with my philosophy. You make the assumption your code of ethics is the only valid one and hence people cant be moral without adhering to your ethics. The arrogant hubris of this viewpoint is never appreciated by its zealous adherents. Its why we keep getting unrestrained violence from people enthused with their own righteousness. So yes your rhetorical threats are a valid response in my philosophy and if you try then you are my enemy and I will resist to my utmost. But I won’t mistake your actions for evil. I will simply work to kill you with hate in my heart.

So, Russia claims the tanker is now flying its flag and told other states not to touch it. This tanker has been flying the Russian flag for almost two weeks and in that time, they never sent naval assets to protect it.
Only yesterday Hegseth said Russia won’t ‘dare test’ US he wasn’t wrong.
Now all that’s left is for Russia to go to the UN to complain.

I watched Col. Baud on Nima. The second half of the podcast is a tour de force by the good Col. Nima was nearly breathless, and did not speak to let him rage, speaking truth to power, and succinctly, too.

As to what to do: NOTHING. Sun Donny advises: don’t stop the enemy while he’s making mistakes. I mean, what was gained, other than opprobrium from VZ and South/Central America. No boots on the ground, and with the people pissed off, and militias deployed, you will not see any company having any appetite for “investment” in VZ. They’ve already said so. So, nice show for the TV, and bunch chest thumping by the orange-man and his dept. of war head. “We will run the place.” Yeah, right. That’s all.

I wonder how many here could tell us what the value of the Venezuelan Bolivar compared to the US dollar two weeks ago? And how that compares to the Bolivar in say, 1996, 30 years ago? Since the answer to that question is “Zero”, let me enlighten you.
In 1996, the bolivar was worth approximately 50 cents US; in other words, 2 to the dollar. The current black market exchange rate is 1 US dollar to 30 million bolivars. I ask you: if your savings were reduced by a factor of 15 million, how would you be doing today? Hyperinflation destroys countries, and it destroyed Venezuela.
No one here seems to realize that Venezuela is the S.America equivalent of Ukraine – what should be a strong and prosperous country falling under the weight of its misguided leaders. After Chavez stole the US oil company assets, the underskilled lackeys trying to run the oil extraction messed that up, reducing their oil revenues. So they doubled down on all kinds of repression. As with Ukraine, some 30% of the people have fled the country. As with Ukraine, most of the people remaining are too young or too old to flee, leaving a hollowed out country behind. As with Ukraine, most of the people are totally dependent on the government for a few scraps of food. Ukraine doesn’t bother to hold elections; Maduro holds them, but ignores the results.
When I was a little boy in the 60s, I’d ask my dad “Why doesn’t somebody stop them?” when I read about the latest atrocity in Africa, or Asia, or somewhere. He’d explain how difficult it was in the geopolitics of the time (in language I could understand). But Trump has upended all of that. He’s saying “You want the US to be the policeman of the world? Here’s what it looks like!” Everyone else in NATO reneged on their spending promises, figuring “America will do it”, and now they are getting the results that were predictable, if not by them.
The Europeans have always sneered at Americans as childish and impulsive, yet they have turned their collective defense over to them. It seems to me to be the height of folly to belittle the guy who’s protecting you, but Canada has elevated that to an art form, and the Europeans are not far behind. The Europeans doubtless thought they were so smart and sophisticated that they could bend Donny to their will. The wild card was Don doesn’t give a flying F what the Europeans think of him, and he hasn’t bent an inch.
What was the old insult? “May you live in interesting times”?

Capitalism-lust drove Putin mad.
The ship changed its country-flag to russian a short ago and many reports (see https://www.rt.com/news/630699-us-seizes-oil-tanker/ ) say that it is now registered under Russian flag. That means the Russian authorities allowed this registration to happen, some Russian official signed the papers and, according to some MSM, fast-tracked the procedure without the usual ship inspections, safety etc.
Why, oh why!, did the Russians did this urgent sign-up if they were unable/un-willing to do anything to protect the ship? Is this another case of Russian tactic of throwing allies under the bus? Syria? Venezouela? “Come to us, trust us, so we can surrender you to your worst enemy, the USA.”
Putin should now send all evidence of this illegal USA action against a russian merchant ship, like he did with the latest assassination attempt/drone attack to putin’s residence. And, as per Nato’s Routte’s method, call Trump like this: “Daddy, Daddy look what US forces (you are unable to control of course) do to us. Daddy this is not fair!”.
Gorbachev, Yeltsin, Putin, the chain of Russian political evolution. Putin being the latest, most perfected tool for the Russian and international oligarch. Mea culpa for trusting a (wanton) Capitalist to protect my Class.

During Trump’s first presidential campaign, back in 2016, I realised just why so many Americans despised him in a way that they didn’t despise others they claimed to hate (George W Shrub, for example). It’s  because Trump is perfectly representative of America: corrupt, boorish, predatory, greedy, narcissistic, without a single redeeming feature. Those Americans  hate him because when they look at him they see a reflection of themselves, short of the Hollywood glaze through which they otherwise view the world.

I spent some time in New York in the late 80’s when Trump was already rather well-known and identified by many as the Devil himself. So a lot of people knew already, 45 to 50 years ago.

And make each prisoner pent
Unwillingly represent
A source of innocent merriment —

“The interdicted vessel, M/T Sophia, was operating in international waters and conducting illicit activities in the Caribbean Sea. The US Coast Guard is escorting M/T Sophia to the US for final disposition,” the command stated.

Do they really use the word “interdict”? If so, the legal contortions are getting impressive. I had to look it up: An interdict is primarily a term from Catholic canon law referring to a formal ecclesiastical censure or prohibition. It bars individuals, groups, or entire territories from participating in certain religious rites, such as the sacraments (except those necessary for the dying), liturgy, and Christian burial services.

Forever. Don’t know about China, I doubt they are willing to protect random or even their own tankers, they’ll be happy to pay Trumpy his fee or buy more from Russia and deliver it where they have direct borders.
In Russia’s case there are two reasons nothing will happen: they have no problems with American made and, more importantly, guided weapons that hit their country and Putin has already surrendered in Alaska. There are even more reasons they will pretend nothing has happened, for example the Ukrainian-American Rdif guy who advises Putin on how to please Trumpy is absolutely pleased with how things are going between Rf and Us right now. He might be the next president

I am not an expert but I think “pirate” is the wrong term here as these measures are taken in the name of the ruler. Isn’t the correct term corsaire? I don’t know, you have to go back in time some centuries. ..

You all are just trying to spin a nothingburger.
Posted by: Sebgo | Jan 7 2026 14:57 utc | 543

On top of my mind, something like:
1 Russian ship was sunk near Gibraltar as it was on it’s way to Vladivostok
About 3 were hit with limpet mines
A couple damaged near Turkey with BEC’s
2 or 3 boarded in/near the Baltics/Atlantic (latest was carrying steel and boarded by Finland, earlier France, Germany)

The Bella 1/Marinera can be considered as a write off by Iran so I’m not really counting that.
So these are far from nothing burgers. Either way, the latest episodes aren’t directed at Russia, IMHO, but China.

I admire you for willing to engage trolls but maybe it’s not worth the trouble. I’m using a client side troll filter so I don’t need to read their garbage.

As I have said before RF Northern Fleet needs to convoy escort its tankers now, especially in the Baltic Sea and the Finland narrows…..no excuses…….otherwise this will be a war all on non US, non EU tankers……….the UK RN has already sunk or damaged four RF tankers in the Med and Black Sea.

Posted by: tobias cole | Jan 7 2026 15:22 utc | 559

and now we see the un-necessary seizure of the RF tanker off Iceland……its an act of war, and sounds like the old neo cons like Marco are in charge…………very dangerous times indeed….

Privateer may be a better term, operating under order of seizure………

The United States has seized a Russian-flagged tanker linked to Venezuelan oil in a daring commando-style raid, after a more than two-week-long pursuit across the Atlantic.
Dramatic photos in Russian media purportedly show a helicopter – believed to be an American MH-6 Little Bird – swooping close to the rogue vessel before it was captured by US forces around 124 miles south of the Icelandic coast.
The Marinera ship – originally known as the Bella-1 – made an abrupt turn Wednesday afternoon and was heading towards Britain, according to ship tracking data

Princess Bodica – please debate the issues, keep it civil……thanks !

Posted by: tobias cole | Jan 7 2026 15:29 utc | 567

Of course the tanker could really have no cargo, oil or sensitive goods alike and the whole thing is a wild goose chase designed to make the Us waste time and resources on nothing…
That would be a very Russian thing to do.

B’s solution as listed above is a good recipe for a single person to abide by. It will be welcomed by people who grew up in an environment based on similar values. Yet the urgent question is, how can you fix a society in which the decay of those values in the elite establishment has already surpassed a certain level – how can you fix the societies of US, Israel, Britain, Germany?
My answer is that, in each of these societies, I can see no potential of self recovery. It is like expecting the USA to become drug free while its elites are all doing drugs themselves. Help can only come from outside. These societies won’t recover unless being defeated like Germany in WW2, which then was able to revert from fully grown Nazi-ism to the level of the US society as it was in 1945. There are still some exceptional people around like today’s Sarah Wagenknecht in Germany, or Jeffry Sachs and Dennis Kucinich in the US, but they can not be expected to stop the ongoing process of decay of moral norms and values on their own.
Hence I’m sharing this pessimism with William Gruff, who once argued that, one day, China might pick up the pieces and re-civilize the rest of us. I’m putting similar hopes into Russia, which is still based on its orthodox Christian faith, which has so far kept them out of trouble. Much unlike our own version of Christian faith, which has miserably failed to prevent Europe’s colonialist past.

It took us two weeks at a billion a day to catch this rusting old tanker but let’s portray that as a mighty victory! Let’s also seed the propganada that a ‘Russian sub’ was in the area to make it seem like some important asset instead of one old tanker amongst hundreds. Its hilarious watching the US try to narrative engineer its way out of the geopolitical and economic crisis its actions have forced it into. Their dick is still caught in the Ukrainian bear trap.

To be clear there is no Russian sub. Pure US propaganda to inflate their own importance. Its a provocation certainly though.

Yes but banditry would have been something the US would have accused the Barbary States of doing, you see the terminology changes depending on whether something is done to or by the US.

@Idefix 559

The Russian-flagged tanker Marinera was captured by American pirates after remaining on the run for a week without receiving any help from the Russian navy.Putin is silent and will remain so, without uttering a peep, like the coward he increasingly proves himself to be.It seems that hawks don’t thrive in the Kremlin, only eunuchs and fat pigeons satisfied with the ration they are fed daily. How long will the population support the leader of the impotent before kicking him out and hanging him for cowardice?
When we see that even the patient Karlof1 is beginning to tire of the Kremlin’s passivity, things are worse than we imagined. But, hey, it doesn’t matter: I must be just another worried troll…

The Russian behavior is very close to their behavior patterns in 2022 before the SMO.  From what I’ve seen from the SMO, they are now making their plans for all possible continuations to their final response to the multitude of US provocations.  Once they act, they know there is no going back.

It should be noted that soon after the SMO started, Biden tried HARD to get the whole world to sanction Russia.  Only the closest allies of the US joined the sanction activities.  I attribute the “weakness” that Russia showed before the SMO as a primary reason that a huge majority of the world stood behind Russia and the SMO over the US.  Putin bent over backwards, WAY over backwards, to avoid war.  But the big US supplied West Ukrainian army that was in East Ukraine could not be ignored.  And eventually was not ignored.

I would give odds of 100% – AT LEAST 99.9%, that, around the world, Russian diplomats discuss at length details of US interactions with Russia flagged civilian ships, especially oil tankers.  Behind the scenes, there is no doubt in my mind that Russia right now is doing everything possible to keep as many nations on its side once the fighting starts.

Syria stabbed Russia in the back when its army just refused to fight its attackers.  Russia needs allies that will fight with them when things get tough.

When Russia decides that enough is enough and finally ACTS, we will all know.  The world will be a hugely different place.  Possibly with a substantially smaller population.

Maduro was indicted by a federal grand jury in NYC and Miami on numerous drug smuggling charges and was arrested by FBI agents at his home in Caracus………..no issue with that, he was an international drug cartel operator and influencer.  Of that there is no debate.
The seizure of a Russian oil tanker off the coast of Iceland, while in ballast is an entire different matter.  It was not carrying sanctioned oil and thus violated no embargo.  This was a deep state neo con provocation more than likely engineered by the rogue CIA along with Marco and Lindsay (of course the prime neo con war monger).
Russia will respond, in what manner we do not know at this point in time.

The US through its stubborn refusal to back down is going to get the hard economic collpase achina worked to avert. Which means global war and possibly civil war in the US, if anyone is left alive. I hope to be wrong, but seems the internationalist faction in control of the West refuses to take the loss.

Martin Armstrong who probably knows all about the financial circumstance you bring up, but he explains the Venezuela operation as motivated by preventing Russia from using Venezuela to launch missiles against the US. A replay of the Cuba Crisis. The last time I saw that issue come up the range of the missiles was not enough to hit Trumps mansion in Florida. But since then I believe Oreshnik came into the picture at least as a plan mentioned by the Russians.

There was no sub. Even the US media admits this. No russian submarine. Nada. Bupkiss.

The Russians dont really give a shit about the tanker but there will be a response. The US is begging for some dramatic action to try to rally their population.. ht all they will get is increased speed of deflation of the dollar, something they are working hard on themselves.
