Moon of Alabama Brecht quote
January 6, 2026
Why ‘Might Makes Right’ Is Dangerous For All of Us

Jaqcues Baud, who was recently sanctioned by the European Union, is lamenting on Dialog Works that –  The World Is Entering a Lawless Era (vid).

He is right of course, but late.

International law, developed over centuries, has been broken by the U.S. and other imperial forces ever since it was established.

But after World War II such breaches, even when obvious, were clad in propaganda which claimed that each of those was about the enforcement of higher values. Villains had to be fought, dictators opposed, evil communists had to be prevented from stealing from their people. The old and new neo-conservatives were masters in this. The blatant imperial attacks of Iraq and Afghanistan were sold as good men’s missions to bring democracy to the downtrodden and suppressed poor people in those countries. We had to liberate their women.

That propaganda that covered the brutal wars of conquest under the mantle of democracy promotion held up for a while. It served two purposes.

It allowed U.S. vassals to justify their co-operation with the imperialists. It also allowed a significant part of the ‘western’ populations to still feel good about their countries. When the wars went southward and losses increased they acknowledged that waging those wars were bad. But the consoling feeling was that at least “We Meant Well“, as one of those imperialists ransacking Iraq titled his memoir.

It worked for a while for some people. The Iraq war was protested against in Europe. Germany and France rejected the war and Congress renamed french fries into freedom fries.

But even their moral high ground has further deteriorated since.

The decade long dirty war against Syria was supported by all NATO countries. The 2014 Nazi-coup in Kiev and the following war against the people of Donbas were patched over. Western propaganda drowned out all protests. But the doubts about these wars lingered. The propaganda was becoming too obvious.

The ongoing genocidal war on Gaza marked a turning point. The Zionist propaganda that was used to justify it was no longer effective.

When that happened the powers-that-be turned to suppression. Protest against Israel mass-murder of Palestinians were criminalized.

Jacques Baud’s correct analysis of the Ukraine war, based solely on western sources, led to the EU absurd measure to censor him.

Joe Biden blew up the NordStream pipelines. Germany and EU did not even protest the blatant attack on their economies. The issue was covered by the German government with implausible stories of six Ukrainians in a sailing raft. No one ever believed those.

Donald Trump took the last step to free the imperialists of all laws.

He does not even try to justify his illegal attack on Venezuela with any propaganda. There is no talk of imposing democracy or any other moral justification. It is pure grab of oil – mafia style – with not a damn given about the consequences or how it looks. The indictment of Maduro is just laughable. It is not a legal case any sane jurist would bring.

The European wimps have failed to condemn this. That will correctly be interpreted as them being weak which, in consequence, will put them next on the menu. They could send troops to protect Greenland from a U.S. invasion. They won’t. Trump will take it without hesitation.

The total lack of moral justification and propaganda to hide blatant breaches of international law has two dangerous consequences.

The lack of lawfulness and moral clarity will creep from international relations into domestic issues.

As Thomas Fazi warns in The Telegraph: We will regret the dawn of a ‘might makes right’ world (archived):

As Western elites discard legal and moral restraints abroad, they will feel increasingly justified in doing so at home, accelerating the erosion of constitutional safeguards and civil liberties.

This process is already well underway. The question is no longer whether the so-called rules-based order has collapsed, but how much destruction will be wrought, abroad and at home, before Western societies are forced to reckon with consequences of the lawlessness unleashed by their elites.

Arnaud Bertrand warns of a second bad consequence – the loss of internal coherence.

What will be left of the Shiny City on the Hill – the ideal the U.S. people, in all their hypocrisy, still have of themselves – when its leaders are openly disregarding all morals and laws?

Bertrand asks how this, a total disregard of all your ideals, would feel if it would happen inside of your self:

You probably fall short – we all do – but the ideals still structure your behavior. They give you something to reach for, they provide the terms in which you can be criticized – including by your own internal dialogue. They make it possible for you to do better tomorrow.

The hypocrisy – the gap between ideal and reality – is not the problem. It’s the proof that the ideal still has a hold on you, that you can still be called back to it. As the saying goes, hypocrisy is the tribute vice pays to virtue.

Now imagine you renounce all this. Imagine you stop being a hypocrite in the sense that you abandon your ideals entirely, that you start owning up to your worst self and become comfortable with your vices. You cheat on your spouse and stop pretending it bothers you. You neglect your children and make peace with it.

Have you thus become “refreshingly honest”? Maybe. But you’ve also died inside. You’ve become something deeply broken – beyond shame, beyond appeal. You’ve lost the internal architecture that makes moral life possible. The little light that said “this is not who I want to be” is extinguished.

That is what the United States just did [to itself].

The consequences of this are, frankly, terrifying. What happens when a nation stops telling itself it should be good?

When societies lose their own moral framing they dissolve into anarchy. When politicians no longer feel a need to justify their deeds the will rule by brutality. Western societies, with the U.S. in the lead, are now well on their paths towards that future.

What can be done to prevent that from happening?

There is an urgent need to call them out, to insist on moral clarity. To reject any inner impulse to walk down the same path. To live by the golden rule, to treat others as you would want to treated by them. To apply this to international relation just as down to this blogs comments.

If we don’t stick by this we won’t fare well.

No. Her fury for Israel is hypocritical, given how much cover she runs for America and the rest of the West.

People refuse to see that it is all the same system. French colonialism, Spanish colonialism, Belgian colonialism, British colonialism.

To many Americans, non-whites are Palestinians. And they wonder why Americans feel oppressed.

Maybe because not valuing ALL human life isn’t conducive to social progress. We’re one family; no one should care about classes or races. That’s really small-minded and divisive stuff, IMO.

The societies with the least amount of that sort of bigotry tend to have better outcomes for EVERYONE.

Imagine: Greenland was already the 51st state of the Union, or a new Territory. And had been for over a decade.

What difference would that make? I say, next to no difference at all, geopolitically.

And who is going to stop the USA from annexing it anyway? No one will, or can.Get it now?

Posted by: Funny | Jan 7 2026 3:17 utc | 304

I am sympathetic to this stance – hypocrisy is indeed better than openly evil behaviour and the tendency towards more and more blatantly evil behaviour in recent decades is both harmful and ominous.

That said, it seems a bit overblown to say that a ‘might makes right’ world is only arising now. ‘Might makes right’ has been the de facto rule, especially when it comes to the US, for as long as I’ve been old enough to pay attention to global affairs at all.

Conversely, even Trump does make some excuses, however ridiculously false they may be: supposedly fighting drug trafficking, supposedly helping Venezuela use the oil, supposedly being legally and morally entitled to the oil… The West’s previous excuses were ridiculously false, too, even though Trump’s are more blatantly so. Still, this seems to me a difference in degree, not in kind. And we have been here before – such blatant cases are to be found in the early 20th century, the 19th and, obviously, further back. It’s a horrible direction to be moving back in, for sure.

BTW, I believe that a takeover of Greenland would be an even worse precedent than the attack on Venezuela. The aggression against Venezuela, while aiming to block by force any attempt for the peoples of Latin America to lift themselves out of poverty and govern their own societies in a decent way, at least still relies on the decades-long propaganda concerning lack of democracy and human rights in Venezuela, etc., although Trump himself doesn’t emphasise that angle.

In contrast, a takeover of Greenland would mean total and practically open ignoring of the right of the native population (which is the majority!) to self-determination and its aspirations for independence. It’s based solely on ‘I need this, so I must have it’, the locals be d***ed. Now that is fascism, Galactic Empire-style.

“Each unchallenged absurdity becomes a proof-of-concept that norms no longer bind.”
What I am describing is not policy failure, it’s norm erosion by demonstration. Once an action that would previously have triggered universal pushback passes with little cost, it quietly redefines the boundary of the possible. The next step doesn’t need justification — it just needs momentum.
Each time the state or elites failed to respond decisively, it wasn’t seen as tolerance — it was read as permission. Trump’s resemblance to 1920-30s fascist movements isn’t ideological so much as procedural. The copy isn’t in doctrine, it’s in the method: ignore norms publicly, dare opponents to enforce them, treat non-response as validation, and escalate again.
That’s why excuses made for him matter more than the man himself. MAGA rhetoric, European appeasement, media normalisation — all of it functions as retrospective legitimation. “He didn’t really mean it,” “It’s just bluster,” “This is how he negotiates.” Those narratives don’t restrain power; they lubricate it!
And in this new global geopolitical environment, actors like the US-Israel nexus don’t need universal support. They only need to know that: objections will be rhetorical, enforcement will be symbolic, consequences will be delayed or diffused. Once that’s established, the next move becomes rational from their perspective. And obvious.
Why this still isn’t 1920s Italy (and why that matters). Here’s the stabilising counterpoint. Mussolini relied heavily on physical violence and territorial control.
Today’s version relies more on: media saturation, legal grey zones, financial coercion, narrative pre-emption, and exhaustion. That makes it feel surreal rather than brutal — until suddenly it isn’t.

I hope for peace and good things for the Palestinians. There are billions and billions more who have been victims of colonization. The Palestinians have been a left-wing cause celebre for some time. What happened to them is terrible but similar things happened to the Koreans, Indians, Africans, among others.

The biggest nuclear threat to the world isn’t President Trump, VVP, or Xi Jingping. Europe is not only hard charging at Russia when it is clearly suicidal to do so, but they’re gambling with nuclear Armageddon in a way that post-Biden America is not.

From that perspective, weakening the EU or cracking it apart with nationalist parties isn’t just desirable, it’s the cleanest path forward.

To show you the level of lunacy the Yankees have sunk in regards to Greenland, it is instructive watch the interview of a US envoy to Denmark with a clinical eye (the word clinical in medical sense). Let some dorks turn this into a psyop. The interview follows some clips of Trump ejaculating his wet dream about Greenland. Re the many people here saying that ‘foreign policy is at its root immoral’ – this is another way of saying that we count only our fellow citizens as humans; we count other countries’ citizens as prey animals to be killed or exploited. This is fascism. Re the people saying ‘all moral order in international relations is gone, we shouldn’t try to resurrect it’ – again, this is a call for not opposing fascism. And no, as the OP alludes to, you can’t keep this thing confined to treatment of foreigners – the increasingly fascistic treatment of foreigners will be combined with increasingly fascistic treatment of fellow citizens, too, and we are already observing this. Even if resistance is futile and humanity is bound for a dystopia, what is the point of our lives as humans if not resisting and fighting evil for as long as we can?

Re: “Shiny City on the Hill”

The phrase “shining city upon a hill” originates from a 1630 sermon by Puritan leader John Winthrop, who used it to describe the moral responsibility of his fellow settlers to create a model society that would be visible to the world.

————-That lofty ideal was flushed into the open sewer of American history long before 1776. Ronald Reagan tried to reactivate it without success.

I watched the Netflix documentary on Seymour Hersh last night, “Cover-Up” produced by Laura Poitras.  Apparently she had been trying to do this for 20 years and he finally relented. No doubt because he wanted his version of his story out before he passes on.

The documentary destroys “The Shining” anything about post WW2 America.

China and Russia have been investing in Venezuela. A few years ago, China was going to invest in Greenland, but pulled out of most of it. It was too expensive, and the political risks were very high, as Denmark refused to allow China to pay to improve the necessary infrastructure so that they could conduct development projects.

That there is no one to protest an annexation says a lot about how important Greenland is. It’s relatively unusable. It could be an asset in 30 years, but the West doesn’t have 30-year plans or political careers that long.

Greenland has deposits that can be refined for Dysprosium, but that refining process is mostly done by the Chinese and is not simple or easy. Major capital investments would need to be made to actually get any value out of the ground in Greenland.

Greenland is sort of the “gate” to the Atlantic. With Russia and China planning to dominate the Arctic, any sort of Fortress America policy is dependent on controlling access to the Atlantic by the Eastern powers.

@303 Russia initially entered the fray helping Syria with ISIS, their reward was the Ukraine war which is where all their attention is now focused, Israel bitch slapped them. They are even under some delusion they can negotiate with Trump, really? China smiles politely, does the odd clever trade embargo, but never actually comes out and says enough is enough. That is their right, however they are simply feeding the bully’s ego and empowering him. Iran doesn’t want a nuke and still belabor under their delusion they can negotiate, we will see if it still exists in its current form in 6 months.

The fall of Syria afterwards was an event that Russia could not do much against, because it involves lack of cohesion and some bad decisions on Syrian side. It could be avoided if after the retake of Aleppo Russia had gone full force on American troops in North-Eastern Syria. This is a topic that was heavily discussed among Russians, specially war reporters on the ground in Syria, who opined that wiping out all American troop and agents in the region had been better. A short intense brutal action. US troops on Syrian soil were on the wrong side of the now-dead UN legality, kick then out and rebuild the borders of Syria.
Russia did the right move in Ukraine, it had to stop USA and as for now Russia is not in a delusion they can negotiate with USA. It is Americans who needed this setup in order to divert the attention of the failure in Ukraine. Russians since Anchorage are just setting the chessboard in Zeitnost against the American block.
as for control, USA has been able to weaken countries but rarely able to control them.  For instance when they created the first jihadists groups out of the Iraq chaos, they lost control of part of it, that went Frankenstein and established an ISIS core around Fallujah, that later USA had to go fight. Fallujah offensive by Americans was a mass murdering of whoever was inside the city. It happened in the middle of a desert, far away from European and American public eyes.   You can’t operate like this at most urban places. People will form groups sometime.
the point with American oligarchy is that American opinion doesn’t stand the sight of amounts of American soldiers killed. This limits considerably what USA can do. Also when people left and right will start killing American civilians.
so far USA had been able to start a genocide in a very small chunk of land lacking any structured army, and to kidnap a head of state from a coastal city after a combination of a massive navy in front of it and some internal betrayal. Seriously?

Ice penetrating radar in Greenland – AntarcticGlaciers.orgThe Greenland Ice Sheet’s thickness varies significantly, averaging around 1.67 kilometers (1 mile) but reaching over 3 kilometers (nearly 2 miles) thick at its deepest points, especially in the interior, with some measurements showing up to 3.5 km (2.2 miles). This vast ice mass covers about 80% of Greenland and holds enough water to raise global sea levels by roughly 7.4 meters (24 feet) if it all melted.

Seems some of the ground would be under water — if not ice.

Well written, undoubtedly.

However, performative aesthetics applied to atrocious war acts (nothing more Marinetti-like or D’Annunzio-like than a “daring” air strike), are found at the ideological (not merely procedural) core of historical fascism too.

“Media saturation”, as you write, may indeed seem modern, but you certainly know what Walter Benjamin wrote ninety years ago…

“All efforts to render politics aesthetic culminate in one thing: war”.

Crude Drops After Trump Says Venezuela Will Transfer Up To 50 Million Barrels To US

Update (2035ET):
Brent crude futures fell after a Truth Social post from President Trump said officials in Venezuela will transfer “30 to 50 MILLION barrels of high-quality, sanctioned oil” to the U.S.
This oil will be sold at its market price, and that money will be controlled by me, as President of the United States of America, to ensure it is used to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States,” Trump said.
He added, “I have asked Energy Secretary Chris Wright to execute this plan immediately. The oil will be taken by storage ships and brought directly to unloading docks in the United States.”

In response to Lemming@209,Not sure about Zelensky. It’s a common trope in Russia, that names ending in -ski are chosen by Jews to hide their Yiddish-sounding surnames to something that sounds more Russian, and I’d say there is some basis for it. Ski-names were prevalent in both Polish-Catholic and Jewish contexts, and thus when having a Jewish-sounding surname was seen as detrimental, like during the anti-cosmopolitan campaign, ski-names provided a middle ground between retaining cultural identity and adding a layer of ethnic ambiguity, in a way that -ov and -in names wouldn’t have.
Posted by: Skiffer | Jan 7 2026 0:50 utc | 242
From what I understand, the -ski/-sky desinence is Polish in origin, and is basically equivalent to “of” or “from” in English, meaning “someone from somewhere” or “someone who does something” (as a profession, most of the times). Hence why so many Polish surnames have that desinence: Kowalski (blacksmith), Kaminski (from stone), Szymanski (from Simon). There is Zielinski in Polish, which is related to the color green (of green, from the green), and it’s probably the same root as the Ukrainian Zelensky, as Ukraine have had lots of encounters with Polish invaders.
I understand the trope that Polish-sounding surnames in Russia may be associated with jews, and that’s probably related to one of those immigration waves where Polish jews settled in Russia. My point was that unless in a specific context (like you mentioned in Russia, or if you find one of those names in the US like Goldman or Nudelman), it is impossible to tell if someone is of jewish origin just by the name itself. The only exception to this rule being “true” jewish surnames which come from Hebrew, like Cohen.

The U.S. Department of Justice eventually backed down from the indictments of Julian Assange and Meng Wanzhou, albeit insisting on face-saving plea bargains. Neither were ever physically detained within United States territory, which is why, by contrast, Maduro and his wife are in a more serious position despite the equivalent absurdity. Still, some sort of plea bargain will probably   represent the dénouement of this particular event.
Hopefully the Maduro legal team is able to mitigate prison conditions. Assange was scheduled for delivery to the SuperMax  system, and suffered poor conditions in the UK.  Manning was previously treated poorly, as are other US “political” prisoners, especially those who offended the Security State.

There are three really dangerous men in the world right now! Donald Trump, Lindsey Graham and Netanyohu!

<= focus on the leadership .. not the government..

Three kinds of persons to consider:

The people with real power

the people with real money expecting to fund and benefit from those with real power.

the people with real access to social media and who have real control over shape and form of content and narrative.

Posted by: UWDude | Dec 30 2025 10:56 utc | 92

The only way to not work with a government that controls the land is to topple that government and put in you own leader.

<- the last thing you want to do is topple the government..that destabilises things and and the chaos it causes facilitates those already in power can use the chaos to achieve even greater control.

what needs to be done is change who is in charge at the government, the media, the military, and the bureaucracy and important institutions.

you are going to need to find ways to change the leaders who have corrupted the governments. Journalist hide these people by attributing events to a  name space, so the public never really has access to useful information. Journalist say the government or the institution did this or that, but rarely ever do they name the in charge person responsible for activity and never do they reveal the behind the scenes persons and sources of power.

I suggest understanding how structural and functional elements deliver in charge person real power is the place to start?

For example banking, military, foreign departments, medical, pensions, production, media and diplomatic cores are structural elements that produce authority. State secrecy, policy making, diplomacy, banking, making war, engaging in diplomacy, lawmaking, prosecuting, developing and distributing content, and policing are functional elements. Authority is both a structural element and a functional element.

I think Quod dactylographāvī, dactylographāvī would be the “most correct” neo-Latin expression. That said, as I watched the better part of the 60 Minutes show that was linked above and no matter how I detest the system they are working for, the individual CIA agents risking their lives in anti-drug operations deserve one’s unreserved respect. Yes, so the operation was not registered at the DEA. Tough. As Blumenthal (a Jewish name lol) pointed out, the whole indictment reaks to high heaven because of the historic ties between the CIA and the Venezuelan “Cartel of the Suns”: the latter would not have existed had it not been for the CIA.

“Fascist speech is not repeat not free speech.” -> free speech is binary, either it is free and everyone can speak, even those you don’t like, or it is not. MoA is definitely not a free speech site, but it’s more permissive than most.
“Do you supoort free speech for pedophies ?” -> pedos will be convicted by a court of law of their actions, but their speech should still be free, before and after conviction.
“Hate speech is not free speech.” -> Define “hate speech”.

During Trump’s first presidential campaign, back in 2016, I realised just why so many Americans despised him in a way that they didn’t despise others they claimed to hate (George W Shrub, for example). It’s  because Trump is perfectly representative of America: corrupt, boorish, predatory, greedy, narcissistic, without a single redeeming feature. Those Americans  hate him because when they look at him they see a reflection of themselves, short of the Hollywood glaze through which they otherwise view the world.

In some ways, it is emancipating to have one’s posts singled out to be deleted every night.  One can clearly see overt hypocrisy and double-standards at work, and the meaning of “arbitraiousness”.

Just a quick AI post:
Double standards are caused by psychological factors like cognitive biases (favoring our “in-group”) and egocentrism, power dynamics that benefit authorities, ingrained social norms (like gender roles), self-serving justifications, and immaturity, all leading to applying different rules to similar situations or people, often unintentionally through confirmation bias, or intentionally for personal gain.

Posted by: conundum | Jan 7 2026 7:46 utc | 367

I keep looking for clarity around the technological and financial aspects of our civilization war and I am beginning to read about how the combination of technology and finance in the West is being organized to retain technological and financial dominance.

Turning the AI Revolution into Dollar Dominance

Building a compute-dollar system poses different challenges than its predecessor petrodollar arrangement. Oil is a physical commodity with clear delivery points and standardized pricing. AI-enabled services—measured in compute units like FLOPs (floating-point operations) or AI tokens—are digital, distributed, and harder to track. For instance, a diagnostic AI trained in Abu Dhabi can serve a hospital in Berlin through cloud infrastructure spanning three continents. Without explicit enforcement mechanisms, tracking currency settlement for these transactions becomes impossible.
This is where the compute-dollar system must advance beyond its predecessor: by making dollar settlement an explicit, enforceable condition of chip access rather than an implicit understanding.
First, the United States should condition access to leading-edge chips on binding commitments to settle AI-enabled exports in dollars. The Commerce Department should modify its semiconductor licensing framework to require that any country receiving leading-edge AI chips commit that all AI-enabled services exported to third countries will be settled in dollars or dollar-backed stablecoins. This isn’t foreign policy overreach—it’s standard export control practice. Recent trade agreements with Malaysia, Cambodia, Ecuador, Argentina, and Thailand already require alignment with U.S. export controls, restrictions on transactions with sanctioned entities, and investment screening mechanisms. Adding currency settlement simply extends this proven framework to the most strategic technology of the century.
Second, the United States should use dollar-backed stablecoins as the settlement mechanism. This solves the enforcement problem that didn’t exist in 1974. In July, President Trump signed the GENIUS Act into law, establishing federal regulation of payment stablecoins backed one-to-one by U.S. dollars or short-term Treasuries. These stablecoins provide instant, programmable settlement with automatic transparency through distributed ledger technology. When a European hospital pays for an AI diagnostic service, the transaction settles immediately in dollar-backed stablecoins, creating verifiable records and sustained demand for Treasury securities held as reserves. Stablecoins can match the speed of China’s digital yuan while maintaining the dollar peg and Treasury backing—turning distributed AI services into an engine for dollar demand rather than a vector for yuan adoption.

The friction I see in the above is with Malaysia and Thailand that are already part of the 15 nation RCEP organization with e-commerce infrastructure in place and developing since 2020

There is a report out saying that Venezuela was about to integrate their system of finance with China and its CSIP alternative to SWIFT as well as sell oil to China and potentially others in yuan instead of dollars.

Posted by: conundrum | Jan 7 2026 7:54 utc | 369

The problem is that every state everywhere is built on a “might is right” basis, and probably that’s the only way they can be built.

Some of them are more open about it, others go to a bit of trouble to cover it up … but they all do it. You don’t think that Hamas was going around asking nicely who wants to support them?

Then we can ask, “Who used more violence to achieve their aims, vs who used less violence?” It’s a tricky question, because there’s always plenty of implied threats around the place. Trump tends to be brash about threatening people, while Putin and Xi are more subtle … don’t let that fool you into thinking Putin and Xi got to the top being soft. Maduro was a thug, he lived by the rules of thuggery, and one day came up against a bigger, badder thug … and that’s how the game is played, and always has been.

Witkoff Announces US Partnership With BlackRock to Support Ukraine’s Economic Recovery

(Excerpt) …..
White House special envoy Steve Witkoff stated that US is working with BlackRock on a project for the future of Ukraine. He said that the project aims to create conditions where people returning from the war will be able to find good jobs back home in Ukraine, according to Clash Report on January 6.

Speaking to journalists following the summit of the so-called “coalition of the willing”, emphasized the importance of the initiative for the Ukrainian people. He also revealed that they are collaborating with BlackRock, the world’s largest asset management firm, led by Larry Fink, and that the endeavor is seen as crucial for Ukraine’s future prosperity and recovery……..

Did someone mention that with regards to the implementation of the new Russian weapon, nuclear torpedo Poseidon, any chance to detect or stop it would necessitate the US having control of Greenland?  Look at a globe, even with unlimited range, there are limited outlets.
Not condoning the action, just trying to see the reasons behind actions.  Mineral wealth would be a plus.  Probably has a ton of oil and gas than has not been publicly stated.  The rest of the Artic seems to be chock full of oil.
Regarding the Venezuela fiasco, Maduro did not help his state by allegedly positioning troops on the border with Guyana last year and claiming it as their own.  Off shore oil is US companies.
Media states traitors in the regime, like last years Israel’s Iran strikes, and before that the quick collapse of Syria.  The extension of UKrain war only makes sense in the hope of Russia collapse.
Anyone thinking that AI coup d’tats has been effectively weaponized?

The headline to this Bloomberg report optimistically says “Postwar”.

European Leaders Hail US Backstop to Protect Postwar Ukraine

President Donald Trump’s administration and Ukraine’s allies converged toward an agreement to offer security guarantees long sought by Kyiv during a Tuesday meeting of the so-called coalition of the willing.

Special envoy Steve Witkoff, who represented the US at the Paris gathering, said officials made significant progress on a plan to end Russia’s war in Ukraine and “largely finished the security protocols.” He vowed that the US-backed protocols would “deter” and “defend” Ukraine from future attacks.

“They are as strong as anyone has ever seen,” Witkoff told reporters following the meeting, which included European, Canadian and other leaders. “The president does not back down from his commitments.”
