Italian journalist Gabriele Nunziati was just fired for asking EU officials this question: “You’ve been repeating several times that Russia should pay for the reconstruction of Ukraine. Do you believe that Israel should pay for the reconstruction of Gaza since they have destroyed almost all its civilian infrastructure?”
Nunziati’s employer, Italy’s Nova news agency, called the question “completely inappropriate and based on a mistaken premise.”

To put it simply, there are many who would like to see the USA wiped from the face of the earth, as retribution for its actions.

Around five days after the implementation of the so-called ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, a multinational group calling itself the Civil-Military Coordination Center (CMCC) was set up in southern occupied Palestine. It quickly attracted at least 14 countries and over 20 non-governmental organizations, which jumped at the opportunity to participate. (US, France, Jordan, the UK, Germany, Denmark, Canada, Australia, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates)
The CMCC was supposedly set up to monitor ceasefire violations, coordinate on issues like aid entry, and help enforce the ceasefire on all sides. So far, it has only worked in favor of the Israelis, and not a single nation has successfully put its foot down amid countless Israeli violations of the deal…the Egyptians even deployed teams of specialists to aid in finding the bodies of Israeli captives in Gaza, who are buried under the rubble caused by the Israeli Air Force’s own bombs.
While the CMCC’s Arab and Western members quickly moved to help achieve Israeli objectives, they have not moved a finger to grant the Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip the bare minimum required under the ceasefire.
All of the focus is being placed solely upon how to remove Hamas and the other Palestinian Resistance groups by force, in other words, achieving the goal behind the Israeli war. There is simply no concern for Palestinians being murdered on a daily basis, the continued Israeli expansion of its so-called “Yellow Line”, the ISIS-linked Death Squads, the refusal to allow reconstruction in the populated areas of Gaza, or the blocking of aid from entering the enclave.
This is not a ceasefire; it is an international scheme that has been hatched in order to achieve the goals that the Zionist entity failed to complete during two years of genocide. All of those involved in this project must be held to account, as their silence is complicity.

Gessen’s saga of trying to understand how Israeli Jews can square the genocide next door w/ their ability, however limited, to act against it or not.
Michael Sfard was one of the Jews of Israel Gessen sat down w/ in the cafe. A human rights lawyer who has spent much of his professional life representing Palestinians in Israeli courts, Sfard has adopted the understanding that “Some are guilty; all are responsible” for the genocide in Gaza.
“The criminal, felonious, unforgivable project of Gaza’s destruction is an all-Israeli project. It could not have happened without the cooperation — whether through active contribution or silence — of all parts of Jewish Israeli society,” Sfard said. He calls on people to get behind those who refuse to serve militarily in Gaza, and to support sanctions, political isolation and international investigations into Israel’s actions.
Gessen noted that a family’s biggest contribution to the state is a child who joins the army. The question that haunts haunts all Israeli Jewish parents is what will happen when their kids turn 18, the age of compulsory military service. The military is the state’s most effective instrument for implicating the maximum number of people in its apartheid policies and its crimes. Refusing to serve in the military is probably the most potent form of protest available to Israeli Jews.
Gessen’s write-up of these conversations in a Tel Aviv cafe was part of an op-ed in the nytimes, and although the gist of the op-ed was to address how to live as a good & ethical citizens in a bad country, Gessen’s heart was mainly devoted to how we, as good & ethical American citizens can maintain our goodness, maintain our ethics, in a country gone bad as a result of DJT.
I pondered Gessen’s effort to skewer DJT uniquely for American failings. When Nakba happened, for instance, U.S. and UK fingerprints were all over it. Of course, DJT was nowhere in sight. Successive spates of ethnic cleansing occurred subsequently, Israelis against Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, and successive American presidents continued subsequently to send the agreed-upon $5bn annually. DJT was not of course in that succession of presidents.
Think of all the periods when Israel mowed the lawn and American presidents stood by. We can list those presidents, but none of them during that period were DJT.
The indiscriminate bombardment of Gaza began on 8 October 2023 and revved its genocidal engine as Collective Biden offered unwavering support for Israel’s right to defend itself, along w/ sending beaucoup bunker buster bombs. DJT was not a decisionmaker @ that time, so of course Gessen cannot lay culpability for the genocide he ultimately inherited, the genocide he walked into, @ DJT’s feet.
The American precedent for the horror, the American infrastructure for the genocide, was already in place and well-grooved, routine even, w/ fully-loaded C-130 cargo planes touching down on the tarmac everyday in Tel Aviv, bringing an unending supply of more bunker busters, when DJT returned to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
So of course we already knew on DJT’s inauguration day that we were good & ethical citizens living in a bad country, and we didn’t need Gessen to tell us that because we had grown up w/ an America whose decades of unwavering support for Israel had led ultimately to the worst kind of support imaginable—-and without the ability to tear away: enablers of genocide.
Gessen is partly right: our country is complicit in genocide. But Gessen is fundamentally wrong too: DJT is not the cause.

One can cry, shriek & scream about DJT being an authoritarian monarch(TM).
