Emmanuel Todd – ‘The Defeat Of The West’ In Its Current Phase

A few month ago I discussed Emmanuel Todd’s most recent book:

In 1976 the French anthropologist Emmanuel Todd predicted the down fall of the Soviet Union. In After The Empire, first published in French in 2001, he predicted the (relative) decline of the United States.

In his latest (and last) book, La Défaite de l’Occident (The Defeat of the West), he laments the West’s inability to distinguish facts from wishes, as seen in its behavior during the war in Ukraine. Nihilism, a lack of values and of acceptance of reality, has infested western thinking:

Trans ideology is therefore, in my opinion, one of the flags of this nihilism that now defines the West, this drive to destroy not just things and people but reality.

Todd recently opened a substack where he is posting speeches and talks he has given.

Todd has just published a new preface for his book in which he sheds light on the consequences of the West’s defeat in Ukraine.

Here are some excerpts with highlights added:

I have always been hostile to the Russophobic policies of the United States and Europe, but as a Westerner committed to liberal democracy, a Frenchman trained in research in England, the child of a mother who was a refugee in the United States during the Second World War, I am devastated by the consequences for us Westerners of the war waged without intelligence against Russia.

We are only at the beginning of the catastrophe. A tipping point is approaching, beyond which the ultimate consequences of defeat will unfold.

I now fear that our media will exacerbate our blindness by being unable to imagine Russia’s renewed prestige in the rest of the world, which has been exploited economically and treated with arrogance by the West for centuries. The Russians dared. They challenged the Empire and they won.

The irony of history is that the Russians, a European and white people who speak a Slavic language, have become the military shield of the rest of the world because the West refused to integrate them after the fall of communism.

I can sketch out here a model of the dislocation of the West, despite the inconsistencies of the policies of Donald Trump, the defeated American president. These inconsistencies do not result, I believe, from an unstable and undoubtedly perverse personality, but from an insoluble dilemma for the United States. On the one hand, their leaders, both in the Pentagon and the White House, know that the war is lost and that Ukraine will have to be abandoned. Common sense therefore leads them to want to get out of the war. But on the other hand, the same common sense makes them realise that the withdrawal from Ukraine will have dramatic consequences for the Empire that those from Vietnam, Iraq or Afghanistan did not have. This is indeed the first American strategic defeat on a global scale, in a context of massive deindustrialisation in the United States and difficult reindustrialisation.

Imperial dynamics, or rather imperial inertia, continue to undermine the dream of a return to the productive nation state.

In Europe, military defeat [in Ukraine] remains poorly understood by leaders.

Unaware of the extent of the military defeat, they do know, however, that their own economies have been paralysed by the sanctions policy, especially by the disruption of their supply of cheap Russian energy. Cutting the European continent in half economically was an act of suicidal madness.

A negative economic and social dynamic existed before the war and was already putting the West under strain. It was visible, to varying degrees, throughout Western Europe. Free trade is undermining the industrial base. Immigration is developing an identity syndrome, particularly among the working classes who are deprived of secure and properly paid jobs.

More profoundly, the negative dynamic of fragmentation is cultural: mass higher education creates stratified societies in which the highly educated – 20%, 30%, 40% of the population – begin to live among themselves, to think of themselves as superior, to despise the working classes, and to reject manual labour and industry. Primary education for all (universal literacy) had nurtured democracy, creating a homogeneous society with an egalitarian subconscious. Higher education has given rise to oligarchies, and sometimes plutocracies, stratified societies invaded by an unequal subconscious. The ultimate paradox: the development of higher education ended up producing a decline in intellectual standards in these oligarchies or plutocracies!

The war has raised European tensions a notch. It is impoverishing the continent. But above all, as a major strategic failure, it is delegitimising leaders who are incapable of leading their countries to victory.

One of the interesting features of America today is that its leaders are finding it increasingly difficult to distinguish between internal and external issues, despite MAGA’s attempt to stop immigration from the south with a wall. The army fires on boats leaving Venezuela, bombs Iran, enters the centres of Democratic cities in the United States, and sponsors the Israeli air force for an attack on Qatar, where there is a huge American base. Any science fiction reader will recognise in this disturbing list the beginnings of a descent into dystopia, that is, a negative world where power, fragmentation, hierarchy, violence, poverty and perversity intermingle.

So let us remain ourselves, outside America. Let us retain our perception of the inside and the outside, our sense of proportion, our contact with reality, our conception of what is right and beautiful. Let us not allow ourselves to be dragged into a headlong rush to war by our own European leaders, those privileged individuals lost in history, desperate at having been defeated, terrified at the idea of one day being judged by their peoples. And above all, above all, let us continue to reflect on the meaning of things.

I highly recommend to read, and reflect on, the whole essay.

Comments

I’d be more concerned about proclaiming American retreat, because that is the easiest route of persuading the current government to support a crackdown in Moldova, NATO occupation of Odessa, or Tomahawks in Moscow. But most of resistance media doesn’t matter, and maybe it never did.
Ever since Steve Witkoff first went to Moscow, it’s been quite clear that Russia has needed little effort to start normalizing relations with the United States. Once the Russians realized they could ignore the rhetoric from globalist organs like Bloomberg and the FT (even when President Trump echoes it), they could be much more optimistic about Ukraine and America.
Europe, however… is going to have a very bad time. It’s certainly true that America is a badly divided society, partly due to the influences Europe most appreciates, but Emmanuel Todd is just one of many ready to jettison the T in LGBT. Yet Europe is cracking down on large segments of the population, to the point elections are no longer free or fair- France, the UK, Germany, Romania and Moldova all have the same sickness, and are by no means unique in that. So be it. I don’t think either Presidents Trump or VVP thought those rotten people would go quietly.
Of course… it does mean that the surest path to prosperity for Russia is scourging Europe until the EU and its component elites crack apart. President Trump would love to look the other way during this remodelling.

And above all, above all, let us continue to reflect on the meaning of things.

Todd is inspired by the right sentiments and make some interesting observations (that the loss of the Ukraines is much worse than any other previous defeat) but he is wrong in his diagnosis.

European leaders are not “dragging us into a headlong rush to war”. There cannot be any war of us against Russia. European political leaders are just following orders to capitalize America by militarizing without actually going to war. European leaders are dragging us into a headlong rush to militarization under the pretext of the Russian threat in order to contribute to America capitalization (in the strict financial accounting sense of that word).

European political leaders’ mission, as commanded from Washington, is to scare the populace to accept shrinkage of the welfare state and indebtedness to capitalize America. America urgently needs capitalization.

Mr Oswald Spengler announced the fall of the West at the onset of WWI – the illusion of Western power. Here we have a power bloc that supposedly innovates and rules the world yet is unable to bring peace in its own backyard. Two world wars later, and on the cusp of the third, the West has not yet solved this problem.
In fact, the last 80 years have been mostly a debt-fuelled illusion with the focus on ‘spreading democracy’ as cover for American imperialism then breifly, fighting ‘Islamic terrorism’ as cover for Zionist-led Crusades . We are now looking at the continuation of the Third Reich and Holy Crusades by the very same power bloc, which has isolated and sanctioned itself from the globe.
The USA and EU are going the way of the USSR. Israel is going the way of Sparta or Assyria. Fascism is the beating heart of Western power.

That’s quite plausible, but unlikely. Japan doesn’t have a military, however they are not a financial power to take lightly. President Trump is unlikely to make that mistake again. Europe, by contrast, has no real military force to offer the United States -and- offers “low” financial contributions. Spain wants to make defense spending go lower.

The war machine hates that, naturally, but President Trump has a simple solution. Rhetorically pull away from NATO and let the European elites realize that Russia is going to take vengeance. If Europe is being ordered not to actually start a war, it should be very easy to start withdrawing support for Ukraine. This isn’t happening: as the United States begins to pull out, people like Macron and Starmer are talking about further escalation. They have to: they’ll face total revolt at home if they backpedal on the Ukraine project now.

Regarding Emmanual Todd’s claim of Nihilism being at the core of Western policy making – this is correct. Zionism is Nihilism. American Imperialism in its current form is Nihilism. Imperialism at the beginning is driven by a somewhat pioneering spirit. Once it enters terminal decline, Nihilism sets in as the burdens of empire become clear. Western elites look – and treat – our world as one giant toilet for themselves. Historic revisionism is Nihilism. Genocide is Nihilism. Bombing as a first-resort is Nihilism. Israel and its eschatological agents in the West including Christan Zionist Nihilists (Luciferians) – they are the downfall of the West. They stand for everything against Western values as per French and American Revolutions. They sabotage goodwill, they degrade humanity and mock international law, they have undone all illusions about civilization itself. Israel is the most Nihililstic state in the globe at the moment. It is both an insult and a monstrosity. Once the American people realize that Zionism is the cancer that has wrecked their standards of living, and that empire is an albatross around their necks, hopefully they will stage a revolution and kill the empire from within. The Republic as per Constitution is incompatible with empire. It is too late to reform the US by voting. Powerful Zionist billionaires like Larry Ellison, Alex Karp and Larry Fink own all the puppets who play the ballot box game. Mossad and the CIA are their baseball bats; the MSM is their koolaid. Its why they are hurrying to buy up Tic Toc and CBS and unfurl a police surveillance state led by Palantir as the truth about their neo-feudal and fascist form of governance sets in like a bad hangover, accelerated by Trump – who is a great confidence trickster to his own failed MAGA brand.

Emmanual Todd’s claim of Nihilism being at the core of Western policy making

Posted by: USSA Empire Of Lies | Oct 7 2025 9:27 utc | 7

Did you read Todd’s linked essay?  I guess not because he makes no such claims.

What Todd concludes on nihilism is:

Zero Protestantism and zero Judaism certainly tragically combine their nihilistic effects in these outbreaks of violence. But throughout the Middle East, it is the United States, by supplying weapons and sometimes attacking directly, that is ultimately responsible for the chaos.

Todd uses nihilism as a fulcrum to introduce his more nuanced concept of “zero state“:

I explain how the ‘zero state’ of the Protestant religion – secularisation at its end – not only explains the collapse of American education and industry. The zero state also opens up a metaphysical void. I am not personally a believer and I do not advocate a return to religion (I do not believe it is possible), but as a historian I must note that the disappearance of social values of religious origin leads to a moral crisis, to a drive to destroy things and people (war) and ultimately to an attempt to abolish reality (the transgender phenomenon for American Democrats and the denial of global warming for Republicans, for example). The crisis exists in all completely secularised countries, but it is worse in those where the religion was Protestantism or Judaism, which are absolutist religions in their search for the transcendent, rather than Catholicism, which is more open to the beauty of the world and earthly life. It is indeed in the United States and Israel that we see the development of parodic forms of traditional religions, parodies that are, in my opinion, nihilistic in essence.

Please read more closely.  To find the bias of any author you must first abandon your own.

The dystopia is planned. We are in the final chapters of Tolkeinesqu prophecy.  The withdrawal across the sea to the fabled unreal magical land and peoples of the West – Waste. The North American continent. Oz and NZ! Little Englands.

The fake magical beings and whatever unbelievable little englander hobbit types with them. Leaving the World to Man.

The only thing that we are waiting for is the destruction of the One Ring That Bonds them all (The 5 Eyed and satrap Collective Waste decayed Empire.

They have sucked out the last drop of wealth of slave citizens and chained their children and grandchildren to lifetimes of future debt that will outlive their shortening poor lives! Legally!!

THAT is the purpose of supposed higher education – paid for by student loans that chain teenagers for life without any guarantee of a proper job with their worthless degrees. It was a scam. As is private health insurance and medical bills – instead of free health and welfare.

“the disruption of their supply of cheap Russian energy.”
That is the crucial point. It has been long planned.

Condosleeza Rice – a cia shapeshifter ziofascist in a ‘black’ skin was doing the rounds telling Merkel and Europe of this back in the noughties! It’s not at all new

They didn’t want Zioeuropes peoples freely moving and trading from Lisbon to Shanghai and a singular EurAsian continent.

That’s the reason for the concerted attempt to kill the EU open border policy; by accelerated enlargement of the ex soviet economies into the European mature ones – that was guaranteed to disrupt the EU economic stability. There should have been a Nu-Eu for these fledgling neo ex communist economies to build them up over a generation or two and safely integrate them.

Instead the U.K. was used as a infiltrator terrorist planting demolition charges before running away like a runaway bridegroom. Both Tory and NuLab kept us out of the debilitating Euro whilst showing the ankle early- hell we even got them to set up the EuroBank in London!  Blair pushed for the early integration of the east Europeans!

The plan as always of the ziofascist old bastard dynasties and their shapeshifter minions has never changed in a thousand years.

To keep Russia OUT! & Germany DOWN ; by keeping their Ziofascist AngloEuropean Imperialists physically in charge f closing down the otherwise natural free movement of peoples , resources and trade across the massive EurAsia.

The deindustrialisation of Germany is not accidental – it is done knowing that the RF has won again and Germans and Slavs will naturally trade with EurAsia. Will benefit from cheaper resources and BRI futuristic transport and cities.  But they will have to do it without their Zionazi brands – The Mercedes and VW Porsche and great companies. As if the EurAsians need these outdated old decrepit behemoths anyway… 🤡🤡 ziofascist Banker wankers are dooooooomed!

It has been the plan of the Moorrrddooorrks and their created super power ONE Ring that controls them all – WasNeverReal! USA on the Mediterranean. Victory or Retreat ‘burning Atlanta’ manner.
The moment the illegal apartheid entity falls and melts away – the final decolonisation of the Levant and West Asia – the world will be free and the ziofascist will have only their North America & 5 eyes to wall off and live in –  hiding from the majority of humanity, with their indentured ‘white’ slaves, planning as always, to rise again!

So Emmanuel Todd is just another bourgeois academic who is afflicted with the “I see no capitalist oligarchy, I hear no capitalist oligarchy, I speak of no capitalist oligarchy”. Mass higher education creates stratified societies, OFFS. I assume that he knows about the history of European societies! Yeah, lets just keep the masses dumb so that their “betters” can rule them. There have been oligarchies and plutocracies without mass higher education, just look at the Age of the Robber Barons for quite a recent one. The mass higher education within Russia and China certainly don’t seem to be creating all the negative effects he talks about! The loss of religious values lead to a moral crisis and nihilism? Really, atheist China seems to be doing just fine on that score. How about the Zionist regime as a reflection of those religious values?
He should stick to international relations unless he wants to embrace real political economy. His insight on the current US orientation is the same as mine, turning inwards into the Western Hemisphere while extracting as much loot from the vassals as possible. I talk about this in my recent piece Is the US going soft on China
The real issue is a capitalist oligarchy that decayed into profiteering and extraction at home. For real insight read Hudson, Todd has some useful insights but also some huge blind spots and misconceptions.

On the down-low, Europe has already ponied up sheep-dipped troops as mercs to sacrifice on the altar of Project Ukraine:  Poland, for instance,  has reportedly suffered 10,000 casualties.  Russia’s MoD routinely locates unannounced/unadvertised NATO concentrations in eastern Ukraine and the Odessa region and obliterates them w/ Iskandrs.  The pizza restaurants, the hotels, the data centers:  Russia finds concentrations of French & British mercs and terminates them w/ great prejudice.

We know inadvertently that Gen Kellogg’s daughter has operated an NGO-styled operation located in the Odessa/Kherson whose mission has been since 2014 to whisk Western casualties, primarily U.S., from the LOC and send them to Germany, whether for treatment in hospitals or for final rites in morgues.  It’s possible to believe that her operation is unique and one-of-a-kind—the only group facilitating the smooth transfer of Western troops into the AFU and then back out—but it seems unlikely.

So the U.S.-led NATO has been fringe-contributing to Project Ukraine’s body count since the ultra-nationalist militias suited up and first began battling LPR and DPR in May 2014.

Add in the mercs from Colombia and Pakistan and perhaps some other farflung areas—Sudan-?—and one recognizes a quite dynamic pipeline of troops masquerading as AFU in order to bolster Project Ukraine.  Therefore, Todd’s remark that “In Europe, military defeat remains poorly understood by leaders” beggars the imagination.

Europe has vigorously and w/ great enthusiasm husbanded Project Ukraine @ critical nexus points, whether one takes into consideration the mendacious participation of European leaders in both Minsk Accords, the nullification of the April 2022 Istanbul Agreement, or even the willingness to utter nary a peep when the Nordstream sabotage happened in September 2022.

It is not merely the case that European leaders—all of them aggressively colluding in Project Ukraine w/ an abject  zero-sum mentality—are “incapable of leading their countries to victory,” as Todd claims:  they are blind to the fact that no victory exists for them along this pathway but collectively lack the insight, awareness, vision or political will that would permit a course correction.

Ordinary citizens have signaled to them how dire the circumstances have become, and pridefully negligent countries like Germany and the UK have cracked down pitilessly, liking neither the message nor the messengers.  JD was right to stand in Brussels and castigate them for being afraid of their constituents.

In the proxy pecking order, the EU holds status on the lowest of the low, which is Ukraine itself.  But the EU, though higher ranked, is also a proxy.   Fighting “to the last Ukrainian” has become both an abstract trope and also quite a literal objective.  When it functions as an abstraction, it’s never possible to run out of Ukrainians, for instance.  There will always be more.  This is where a continent whose leaders “poorly understand” a military defeat come in handy.  Their people are in fact “the last Ukrainians” that the EU leaders have vowed to stand up until the very end.

And as long as Sweden has troops to send and Norway has troops to send and Poland and the Netherlands then there will be no end.

The one thing that Enanuel Todd’s essay does not explain though is how Western nations and the EU in particular ended up being led by incredibly stupid and incompetent politicians who, among other things, confuse the Baltic and the Black Seas (Liz Truss), cannot answer correctly most quiz questions testing basic general knowledge (current UK deputy PM David Lammy on a past episode of Mastermind) or are surprised that the Soviet Union and China were victors in World War II (Kaja Kallas).

At least in Britain, most politicians appear to have attended Oxford University and studied the same course (Politics, Philosophy and Economics) and then worked their way up their preferred parties’ bureaucracies to reach Westminster. This goes some way to explaining how most UK politicians are an intellectually dismal lot. How then, do we explain the poor calibre of political leaders in France, Germany and other EU nations? Are there universities in those nations equivalent to Oxford teaching similar brainwashing courses as PPE?

In the case of Kaja Kallas, we know her family was part of the Soviet Estonian nomenklatura (the privileged class drawn from govt bureaucracy) and her father later served as prime minister in post-1991 Estonia; and Ursula, von der Leyen has led a charmed and blinkered life thanks to family connections and loyalty to Angela Merkel. What other major leaders in the EU benefited from family connections and family financial support?

Notice how few of our current political class are not graduates (a number close to zero).

From Russian point of view it doesn’t matter much. Yes, Poles, Brits, Dutch, Danish, Norwegians are killed every day.

EU ‘providing military support to Ukraine’ makes little-to-no difference on the front. Russia is well established logistically and positionally to fend off any attacks regardless whether they are Ukrainians or Europeans, which cannot support their forces in such a foreign adventure anyway.

At this point, Europeans are merely a necessity to prevent Ukrainian fronts collapsing completely, but in reality, they only buy bits of time here and there. And yet, Ukrainian front is collapsing anyway.

Todd: “A negative economic and social dynamic existed before the war and was already putting the West under strain. It was visible, to varying degrees, throughout Western Europe.”

Those who saw prosperity and progress and peaceful coexistence for a sheltered West in the period between 1945 and 2022 hop, skip & jump right over Turkey’s annexing North Cyprus in 1983 and the dismemberment of Yugoslavia in 1999.

Everything was so fab in Europe’s prosperous liberal democracies, where citizens were protected behind the bombardment NATO’s MIC weapons meted out on places derided as non-liberal/non-democratic, that there was no incentive to see how the moves & machinations of a hegemon-dominated matrix had destabilized and made insecure the targeted nations not actually within the hegemon’s domination.  That nations might even try actively to fend off being subsumed into the hegemon’s matrix—-the Russian Federation, for instance—-was a concept so foreign it just did not compute.

Along w/ a compliant media, the European warmongers—erm, imperialists—preferred propaganda saturation when the mask began to slip.  They curated the events that would dominate the headlines and how those events would do so.  Peace on the continent, which was never exactly peace, had a pretense quotient, so to speak, a sell-by-date or a shelf-life if you like when the peace would expire.  The shelf-life governed the point beyond which it would no longer be possible to pretend.

We are at that point.

Todd: “Imperial dynamics, or rather imperial inertia, continue to undermine the dream of a return to the productive nation state.”  A return to a productive nation state is not by any means possible under the current dynamic, which has been decades in the making.

Todd has a brand, and he wants to monetize his cope.  Instead of finding continuous democratization and liberalism and freedom and prosperity on the continent, he finds a sense of historical reversal looming:  a return to rivalry and violence.  The loss, not of material goods but of confidence and security, is incalculable.

Todd exemplifies a West-blinkered mind-set characterized best by the saying “We have lost our keys in the dark but will search for them in the light.”

🇨🇴Colombian mercenaries ask to be rescued from Ukraine

❗️A group of Colombian mercenaries in Ukraine has appealed to Colombian President Gustavo Petro for rescue, stating that they were sent to Ukraine by Polish military companies and now find themselves in a dangerous situation.

🪖In response to this appeal, Russian Ambassador to Bogotá Nikolai Tavdumadze noted that Colombia should take measures to protect its citizens, regardless of their participation in military operations abroad. He emphasized that mercenaries sent to Ukraine should be returned home and should not be used as tools in other people’s conflicts.

This rhymes perfectly withh my latest blog post:

A Mocking Polemic Against the War-Mongering Lunatics in Brussels

The lunatics in Brussels are at it again; try to watch their latest gig in Copenhagen.

To watch the European Union’s so-called “leaders” strut about the global stage is to witness a theater of the absurd — a tragicomedy by pompous, uneducated, uncultured clowns who mistake their incompetence for statesmanship—they do so without a sense of shame or irony.

These self-regarding mental midgets posture with the gravity of emperors but wield the wisdom of village drunks, dragging a whole continent toward a precipice while applauding themselves for their genius.

It is beyond belief that the clowns cannot see how ridiculous they appear as they pose for their ritualistic photo-ops.

A sane mind would ask why this gaggle of barely-legitimate incompetandos would not try to fix the gigantic social, political, and economic problems in their countries instead of dazzling us with their buffoonery in their doomed attempt at conquering Russia and its immense wealth.

At the head of this circus is Ursula, self-appointed empress of Europe. Once a gynecologist, then a woeful German defense minister whose army trained with broomsticks instead of rifles, she has somehow reinvented herself as Napoleon’s grandniece and Hitler’s avenging ghost.

Never mind that she could not manage a functioning infantry platoon; today, she proclaims herself Europe’s supreme strategist, determined to settle scores with Russia on behalf of her defeated ancestors.

Her stupid pronouncements echo across Brussels, shrill and unhinged — the rhetoric one expects from a frustrated village tyrant, not the president of a continent’s union.

That Europe allows such a woman to chart its fate says less about Ursula’s grandiose delusions and more about the continent’s suicidal decline.

Not to be outdone, the EU’s “chief diplomat”, Kaja Kallas, parades her ignorance with the flair of a soap opera star.

With an impossibly grandiose title of High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, her idea of diplomacy is to pout and posture like a teenager dumped before prom night. An imbecile who could hardly organize her wardrobe waxed lyrical about inflicting strategic defeat on Russia.

Her diplomatic performances are so detached from reality that they border on performance art. She is a positive clown show, a crazed batshit to boot.

Todd is ok but anyone claiming our political leaders are preparing us to go to war with Russia is falling for narratives fabricated by inner deepstate strategists in America. Russia is not interested in us and we are not capable of waging war to them.

The single purpose of war rhetoric in Europe is to make Germany transfer wealth to America by buying American weapons. This is one of the ideas of American strategists. They have more ideas. But this one is progressing quite well. Germany will suffer the fate of Japan in 1985. The other euros, are irrelevant as they are either too small or too indebted already.

Mr Moon,
Today is the second anniversary of one of the most cruel acts of savagery ever perpetrated by a savage, utterly brainwashed people.
Can you please tell us, in between your “arm poet” begging episodes, what has become of your initial, constant insistence that Israel has already lost and is running out of, well, everything? I know, as reality sat in those calls have become less frequent, but the hatred is always the same.
You aren’t stupid, though you are an arrogant beggar.
You are a bigot, that’s what your problem is. Your hatred for everything Israel (and who knows whether in you, a German, there is something more sinister at play) blinds you to reality. You are the equivalent of the bigots on the Ukrainian side.
You have not even become, you have always been your enemy. You just never realised it.
I will pray for you, on the odd chance that that Christ in which you don’t believe will, in His grace, decide to save your sorry, bigoted ass.
Failing which, I am afraid your hatred will live forever.

And he seems to be oblivious to the fact that on September 11, 2001, Israel took complete control of AmeriKKKa and thus the Christian Colonial West. And we’ve been doing Israel’s bidding ever since.

Reflection on the meaning of things entails to reflect on one’s understanding of words. Says Todd, […] a descent into dystopia, that is, a negative world where power, fragmentation, hierarchy, violence, poverty and perversity intermingle.

The term perversity might stump some. Most likely Todd is using it against the background of French psychoanalytical tradition, where it is more prominent than in other branches. Otto Kernberg, an influential Austrian Jew working in New York, uses it, but less broadly, when he describes “primitive” ego defense mechanisms as found in personality disorders. In German literature I would consider it rare.

A good entry point on the usage in French is a bestselling book by Marie-France Hirigoyen from 1998; it is also a great practical helper for those who are encountering or recovering from relations to a “pervert” for instance in family, marriage or workplace.

Indeed. But their degrees focus on the study of Western orthodoxies and exculpatory mumbo jumbo: a kind of theology – except even more meaningless. It is learning by rote, like reciting a cretinous credo or – as mandarins – learning the art of manners at the imperial court.

Next to NONE of them are STEM graduates.

Western decline:

Everybody sanctions Russia 19 times to hell (it doesn’t work) for defending Russian speakers against Nazi coup makers in Ukraine.

Israel commits genocide (as declared by UN) on hudreds of thousands of civilian Palestinian, men women and children.  But Norway plays World Cup football against Israel in Oslo on Saturday. One of the players says in a press conference before the match

– It is a sad situation that affects many, including in Norway. We have respect for that and think it sucks, but right now we have to be a little selfish and think about the sporting, says Patrick Berg at Tuesday’s press conference

Posted by: Norwegian | Oct 7 2025 12:33 utc | 44

Don’t quote me on the Kernberg thing, I’m now not sure to what extend I’ve just conflated perverse with primitive. The rest of my comment stands. Perhaps an educated French-m/w/x can elucidate us more to the history of the term, though this would be strictly OT.

Incidentally, Hirigoyen’s book is titled Die Masken der Niedertracht in the German edition, which is neat because of its use of Niedertracht. You can think of it as something like Schadenfreude plus the desire to actively inflict harm onto others – perverse indeed. Common and current english language parlance is toxic, though this is again much broader. The narcissistic type which thrives on this is often called malign.

Turkey didn’t and still hasn’t “annexed” North Cyprus. It was resistance to the Greek Cypriot coup d’état in 1973, and they left North Cyprus independent which they still are.

Europe is always very nice to the Greek-cypriots, though they tried to do a takeover. Greeks don’t deserve it, either mainland or cypriots, as though they’re genuine descendants of the ancient Greeks, which they aren’t in the main.

I find myself unable to believe that this is all about values and confused thinking among the Europeans. My expectation is that there are insiders in Europe who know something they dont explain to the public.
About hard economic realities connected to a legal deal existing within the west such that the US is much safer than the EU
Will anybody among the insiders care to comment?
Thierry Meyssan,  a freemason and investigative journalist often comes up with clues unheard elsewhere. He now mentions that the CIA and MI6 were behind the Summud expedition to Gaza.
As often before they relied on the Muslim Brotherhood.
The purpose was to tie the project to Hamas.
That is just an example but it contrasts with intellectuals like Todd.
There are many things unstated. Things that are decisive and that render all analysis from a distance moot.

This may seem OT but I think not.
A month ago I was doing the early morning bike ride on first day of school. Bad scheduling. Got trapped in the New Trier rush hour. If you remember Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, or the half dozen similar Hollywood movies, that was about life at New Trier High School. A public school that acts like an elite private school.
Imagine a thousand trophy wives and soccer moms all stuck in traffic while driving six figure German SUVs. A smattering of Range Rovers and a Bentley. Each mom having a panic attack. Half of them on psych meds, half of them on street drugs, half of them starting the day’s alcohol a bit early. The kids a bit more psych meds, a bit more street drugs, a bit less alcohol. It’s not necessary to imagine this, look in the windows and watch mom sniffing and sipping.
It occurred to me this is the apotheosis of American civilization. This is the pinnacle of what can be achieved by the connected or the successful. A nightmare on very fine wheels.
The old guy on the very vintage and somewhat shabby bicycle flies past, even though going much slower than normal. The traffic jam about three miles long. The landscaping trucks that are the usual biggest slowdown all know to stand clear on first day of school.
Mom gets nothing worth having for having married the rich man. The kids are the elite of the very near future and are all nuts. This menage cannot govern the empire. They can’t do anything.

RE:  Doctorow calling for Putin’s removal

<<

Doctorow is in the John Helmer category of commentariat, quick to decide that VVP is either barely able to fend off pressure from the oligarchs or is on the verge of being replaced.

Both appear to report accurately what their sources pass along to them, but either their sources are misaligned w/ realities or the interpretations they—Helmer and Doctorow—give to the info their sources feed them are skewed.

If you synthesize the data which maps and territorial gains provide with the MoD statements about trajectories and then factor in ephemerals like VVP’s confident/incisive/temperate remarks @ Valdai as well as other signifiers like VVP’s consistent behavior toward DJT 2.0 you come away w/ a self-assertive unshakeable president who has level-headedly navigated deeply gnarly terrian, both geopolitically & domestically.

Doctorow’s sources tell him that the oligarchs don’t want DJT to humiliate Russia on Truth Social.  Certainly they’d like a more in-yer-face Medvedev vibe.

Keep in mind, though, that one of DJT’s most successful tactics is to force an opponent/adversary to get into a spitting match using DJT’s own tactics—something which necessitates the opponent or adversary to play DJT’s game by DJT’s rules, not their own game.

VVP and his leadership team have deftly avoided this—another signifier of strength & poise.

The western nihilism that Todd points to has the right appearance but is a different animal in strange clothing. The technical innovation of hormonal birth control changed the basic dynamics between men and women. The adaptations of societal organizations which reflect governing structures is still evolving. What appears to be Weimar like nihilism is not that at all. It is government structures behaving in a way reflecting those who predominate within them. These are feminine networks where selection of persons and policies is not based upon competence but some ephermal sense of egalitarianism. For example one would think Kaitlin Clark would be the leader of the WNBA in the same pattern as Michael Jordan, but she is reviled BECAUSE she is the most competent. This appears nihilistic but it is not. Our governments appear nihilistic while millions die, but they are not. They are feminine. The only societal safeties we have to prevent going down this wrong path into a hot oven and a serving tray is a vague and inadequate reference to wicked witches.

Posted by: frithguild | Oct 7 2025 13:26 utc | 58

“Primary education for all (universal literacy) had nurtured democracy, creating a homogeneous society with an egalitarian subconscious.”
Even a contrarian like Todd appears to agree with the modern thinking on this sort of thing. But in reality, public schooling, especially in its compulsory form (de facto or de jure), is endpointing to little more than state-overseen indoctrination. Why this is “surprising” to sociologists is not clear to me, given what history teaches.

RE:  the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus

<<

Although Turkey recognizes the TRNC as an independent state, the international community (read:  G-7 and Europe)  considers it the territory of the Republic of Cyprus under Turkish military occupation.

Due to its lack of recognition, Northern Cyprus depends on Turkey for political, economic and military support.  The Turkish army, with the support of Northern Cyprus’s government, maintains a large force in Northern Cyprus.  This has led some experts to describe Northern Cyprus as a puppet state of Turkey.

The most obvious thing about the Western Empire is the death of morality based on Christianity and the traditions of the Greco-Roman world. Without both a faith-based set of moral codes and a rational/philosophical world view that posits certain moral principles the West, as it disintegrates, searches for meaning and morality. We cannot live together without morality or, at minimum, some “honor among thieves.” Europe, from a philosophical, mythic, religious POV seems hopeless though this may be changing. For the US the path to sanity lies through what many call “spirituality without religion” that was born out of the New Age movement. This movement weaves together many traditions as Aldous Huxley explored int his book The Perennial Philosophy wherein similar views are shown to exist across various traditions. In short, in the US (including, increasingly, Christianity), the Gospel Jesus is emphasized over the Old Testament tyrant fake god who just wants us to follow a bunch of ambiguous rules and therefore become liberated to conquer, loot, rape, and commit genocide to their heart’s content. Many of us, in the US, believe there is meaning to life and our vehicle to that goal is to develop our radically (in the West) undeveloped and demonized right-side of our brain that governs our ability to tune into higher perceptions. Many, if not most of us, must develop this as a counter to the creeping nihilism/narcissism rampant that is so convenieeeent to the oligarchs continued domination of society. `

The torch & pitch fork crowd might come for Mutter-!

Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said, “Merkel pursued a policy that made Europe dependent on Russian energy and disarmed the continent militarily.”

This comes on the heels of Merkel telling a Hungarian media outlet that leaders in Poland and the Baltic states derailed negotiations in the winter of 2021 w/ Russia.

Morawiecki called her remarks “shameful”—and he said her “arrogance knows no bounds.  This is purely grotesque.”

On top of which Estonia’s current Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna insisted that the Ukraine conflict was driven by “Moscow’s refusal to accept the Soviet Union’s collapse and its unrelenting imperialist ambitions.”

At no point in Todd’s essay does he address the wholesale industrial-scale lies which have guarded the sacrosanct Project Ukraine since autumn 2013, if not before, as Euromaidan was getting especially spicy.

Until segments of the populace can send forth potential leaders w/ enough strength & clout to begin unwinding the culture of lies in which Europe has self-entombed since going whole-hog for Project Ukraine, the continent will suffocate, buried alive under its own propaganda.

No one associated w/ the perpetuation of that propaganda can continue to lead unless they recant.  Ditto w/ media sites which enriched themselves from the propaganda.

It’s somewhat like in the U.S. w/ the ruse about Joe and his cognitive decline.  The prominent figures and influential media sites who preferred to insist on his acuity even in the face of compelling evidence to the contrary cannot command a national stage any longer unless they reconcile the lies they promulgated.  Even then they might not be invited back.

The fact is, a culture can’t move into truth & clarity while still towing a corpse of deceit.

I don’t think that the “mainline” Protestant churches (e.g. Lutheran, Anglican, Methodist or United Church, Presbyterian, Quaker, etc.) are anything like the “ZERO” models described, and the current Pope is rather protestant in his turn away from financial wealth, a strong reaction to indulgences and corruption in the Roman Catholic Church.
The charismatic so-called evangelical Protestantism in the US, and elsewhere, is quite explicitly a business invention.  It is enough to say the violence is arising because of the threatened position of the Western rentier classes.  That explains all.

Defeat of the West? Dugin, the Russian philosophy boffin, in one of his interviews says that the West reveals its agenda best in films. He used the movie Terminator as an example. Machines that assassinate humans. If this is the goal, and the conclusion to Western ideology, then the West is not in defeat at all. Some shrinking, and receding at the edges, must be only a chrysalis effect, a transforming. Another Russian philosophy standout, one hundred years ago now, describes this phase as a transition from Night to Day, from theory to practice. This philosopher was Pavel Florensky.

AFAIK, Emmanuel Todd’s book has still not been translated into English, but is available in about 22 other languages.  So the omission is intended.  But there is a free English version, an 11MB pdf available at
https://annas-archive.org/md5/4c9713b6cd334e013ae9f4af62571763
You can copy and paste the above into your browser.  The quality of the pdf is not high. Some names are truncated and the font changes randomly.  It’s samizdat quality, but the information may be important enough – to you – that it’s worth it.

y’all,

This is a superb, thoughtful thread. I don’t think much of Todd’s view of things, which strikes me as childishly reductionist, but then again childish reductionism might be the very essence of anthropology. Anthropology is nothing but reductionism! the bumper-sticker ironically asserts. At any rate, Todd’s insane simplifications provoke profound reflections from barflies in general. For which I am grateful.

Todd is a very good writer and has a sense for timing.  However, I warn against his identification with Israel.  This essay doesn’t show it, but he has tremendous sympathy for the Zio state that distorts any scientific assessment of it.
His method is also highly questionable.  He claims to base his analysis on his anthropological studies of family structure, but I don’t believe it.  Rather he is an astute reader of the news and times his declaration of decline with the culmination multiple material indicators of decline beyond the family/religion, just like many clever commentators do here every day.
Finally, and most importantly, the issues of Capitalism, Imperialism and social class struggle are non existent in his world.  In the long version of Defeat, he basically writes off the western working class as a factor completely.  Basically, the most critical aspect of reality is sort of brushed aside and replaced by religious sentiment (!)
That said, this essay is good reading and useful for those who are stuck in the western msm propaganda bubble.  He is very intelligent and interesting, but just a little too clever.  He merits a serious critique which I don’t have time for.
For any of you with dreams of Substack fame: develop a thorough, material, class critique of Todd’s Defeat and publish the polemic as your first article.  If you do well you’ll draw everyone who loves and hates Todd.

The assertion that the population of the UK ( and France , Germany etc . ) would rise up against their leaders  if withdrawing support for Ukraine  seems improbable . Starmer is already disliked  for several good reasons . Spending money on Ukraine is likely one , but stopping the spending would not make him more unpopular .
The ( commonly used ) phrase ‘ rise up ‘ suggests revolution .
The UK does needs a revolution . But whether one could occur in the face of modern  ‘security ‘  surveillance  is an open question . The infamous London mob wouldn’t get there .
Scottish Nationalism , properly lead , might .

<i>”It is enough to say the violence is arising because of the threatened position of the Western rentier classes.  That explains all.</i>
That does not “explains it all.”  Threatened rentier<b>s</b> fully covers the power dynamics and raw materialism.  But other realms matter too.  That’s where religion, psychology, philosophy and ontology are important for the legitimacy or illegitimacy of the power structures.  Without legitimacy, power structures always corrode and eventually collapse. Not as soon as people need, but collapse they do.

The real issue is a capitalist oligarchy that decayed into profiteering and extraction at home. For real insight read Hudson, Todd has some useful insights but also some huge blind spots and misconceptions.

It’s ridiculous to attribute so much significance to “trans ideology” (If trans ideology even exists.  Most transgender people are just trying to survive constant demonization either by right wing extremists or by this website.) Anyone using transgender people as their scapegoat discredits themselves.

“War waged without intelligence against Russia.”
How many times i’ve heard similar statements like:
“War we can’t win!”. “War we were not prepared for!”
For the most westerners, if not for all of them, it would be OK if we “had intelligence”, “if we won”, “If we were prepared” .
But i am asking them:
Who gives you the right to even think about wagging war against Russia (or anybody else for that mater). Who gives the fright to destroy lives hundreds of millions of people in Ukraine, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Fr. Yugoslavia, Serbia…
Only way these people will come to their senses if somebody nuke NY, London, Paris, Berlin..only then!

Well, Doctorow is another intellectual who is very conservative, has a quiet identification with Israel and lauds Trump (Zio stooge) routinely.  I stopped reading him altogether a year ago.  He’s good on Russia, that’s where it ends.  Otherwise, he’s a typical Imperialist intellectual and a bit of a snobby braggart as well.

Well, there’s no time to argue about the other wars, but Putin “gave that right” by invading Ukraine, an unnecessary move.  And Putin continues to destroy hundreds of lives through drone attacks and people here seem comfortable with those acts.
And if you’re in your senses why would you want to nuke those places you list, as that would kill large numbers of civilians like we’re seeing in Gaza?

I looked forward to reading further then realized why I’d opted to ignore Todd. It’s hard to take seriously anyone obsessed with trans people. They are probably 1/10th of 1 percent of the US population and nobody gives af about them other than some liberal dem assholes and the same right assholes who discovered the word “woke” which means a non-racist white person and that’s all it’s ever meant.
like most non-obsessed assholes, I oppose violence against the few trans people I see but like golfers or wine critics or anyone else in society nothing about them matters.
Todd’s obsession is like going on a job interview, observing your prospective employer is well informed, feeling the interview has gone well then when he stands up to shake your hand he doesn’t have pants or underwear.
like taking a moron like Van Jones seriously.

Gilbert Doctorow’s current fantasy is, at least in part, a product of an approach he took some time in the last year or so when he decided to join what might be described as the guest circuit on alt-media podcasts.
At that point, his blog posts started to be prefaced with observations along the lines of – to paraphrase – all my peers on the circuit are saying X about whatever is the talking point of the moment, so in order to set myself apart from everyone else on the circuit I am going to argue Y or Z.
Consequently, the starting point on any issue for Doctorow is not any kind of objective analysis but how he can differentiate himself from every commentator on the circuit (Johnson, Escobar, Ritter, Wilkerson, Crooke, et al).  This has led him into a cul de sac of escalation in which to maintain the relevance of this self-created Patreon position above all of those he sees as the competition he thinks he is engaged with,  he has to come up with ever more wild and fantastical claims and stories.
It’s quite sad really.

An excellent thread, as others have said … #55 by oldhippie especially.
Seriously, is the “west” even a thing without the common core of Christianity and without the moral codes (no matter how well they were implemented) and values of free speech, free markets, equality before law, rules of war, etc.? Nihilism of late stage capitalism where it truly is ONLY about money is not an inspiring place to be …
On the trans issue: the problem is not the numbers nor the idea that certain people want to look like their stereotype of the opposite sex for whatever reason. It’s a free world, do what you want. The problem is that cultural leaders like universities and government leaders are trying to enforce the nonsense that you can actually change immutable factors of your being like your sex. That is a perverse type of nihilism that can destroy a society if believed by too many.

“For real insight read Hudson.” Most definitely his latest with Radhika Desai shows GREED to be the motivating factor for the Empire’s fall, “Who Plans the Economy?” I also agree with several of your criticisms of Todd, the Class issue and education being one and two. IMO, the pursuit of financial wealth at the expense of all other drives is the basis for the 100% ruination of the Collective Western Empire, and it began during the late 19th Century in England. Combined with that drive is the longstanding drive to re-enslave the Slavs, emasculate Russia and steal its resources–Plan Ost pioneered by Hitler then adopted by the Outlaw US Empire and NATO, which Russia has thwarted yet again. It was a plan fueled by Exceptionalist Hubris on steroids–English speaking oligarchs thinking they were oh-so superior to the Slavic culture that they could somehow deindustrialize to make themselves the filthiest rich of all time and defeat the reindustrialized, resource rich Russia at the same time. The irony is the Filthy Rich provided the Global Majority with the tools to defeat them by offshoring the West’s industry. The discussion linked above shows the Outlaw US Empire abandoned fiscal policy making when it went off gold and went to being exclusively driven by monetary policy devised by the Filthy Rich–remember, their wealth is the combined debt of everyone else and is thus whimsical being close to artificial.       And yes, there is the moral decline side of the debacle that’s been present from the beginning of the modern Western Empire in 1500 that can be reduced to one word and one motive–Genocide driven by Roman Christianity’s desire to rule the world. For an uptodate look into our state of being in that regard, I suggest Warwick Powell’s latest, “America Against Itself, redux.” The immorality of the Outlaw US Empire is on display for all to see except for many within the Empire, although that’s changing as Trump’s “Proto-Fascism” gets challenged and people finally begin to question the status of their morality. Trump’s demand for tribute to transfer to his Filthy Rich comrades is being shown the finger by the world–even from within the Empire’s colonies. And the level of its immorality is bared to all off the coast of Venezuela and within West Asia. All is Arrogance, Hubris and Desperation, which is likely to worsen until the people vomit all over it and work to clean up the mess.

This is a thought provoking post, even if I don’t agree with all of it…well, that’s the 1st Amendment for ‘ya [insert drum roll here].  I made a few comments and edits

1] “Withdrawal from Ukraine will have dramatic consequences for the Empire that those from Vietnam…did not have“.

[2] Imperial [policies] continue to undermine the return to the productive nation state.

[3] Higher education [accreditation] creates stratified societies…the highly educated [credentialed] live among themselves, think of themselves as superior, [despising] the working classes, rejecting manual labor and industry. Higher education [accreditation] ended up producing a decline in intellectual standards.

1] Dunno, Viet Nam is still effecting a significant portion of the population today whereas, the vast majority of Americans could give a rats ass about ex-ukrainia…really, well, neocolonialists DNCers and Cheney-Repus do but hey, they’re mainly worried about having to find another grift.  I think that’s what Venezuela and supporting Israel’s coming attack is about.  No pulling out of ex-ukrainia would not effect the US militarily or, socially.

2] True.

3] With modifications noted; True.

I add, read the letters of the Wright Brothers whose education was to the 7th level, the sophistication shown is far beyond 95% of today’s [credentialed] grads.  Then read the letters of enlisted Soldiers in the Civil War, WWI, WWII.  Those veterans had only a primary education and you will be surprised to learn that those people were better “educated” than today’s [credentialed] graduates.  It’s not just the vets use of language, which is vastly superior but, their use of reasoning as well.  Outside of the Science degrees, college degrees today are a sham.  It’s rare that I meet a skilled tradesman who isn’t  heads and shoulders above the man who got a BA degree in terms of maturity and capability.

Todd is accurate enough, but I don’t see what distinguishes his analysis from what others, both here and in other venues, have been saying.  Reality-testing failures on the part of declining powers are nothing new.  And this has nothing to do with trans ideology, which too often is turned to as a demonstration of nihilism, when in fact a principle driver of nihilism is an imperial project devoted to the accumulation of exchange value, into which all other values must yield.   Let’s leave  Kulturkampf reductionism to the dopes.

On Dr. Doctorow’s recent articles about replacing Mr. Putin and Mr. Lavrov.

My interpretation of his arguments are:

a. Russia needs a strong, credible deterrent to further western provocations, like long-range missiles, drones to strike key infrastructure, high-seas piracy. Those provocations are cheap, sometimes quite effective, and are just getting started.

b. Humans, as they age, become more risk-averse. See: Iran’s leadership as recent example. New crop of leaders has a very different perspective on the situation.

c. Cronyism is still very prevalent in Russia. There’s considerable dead-wood that needs pruning, and possibly a few more oligarchs whose wings need clipping. We saw much evidence of this during the SMO, right?

d. Cult-followings of leaders lulls the society into a false sense of security. Sooner or later, Putin and Lavrov will run out of gas. Better to promote them out to advisory positions before exigencies make succession more problematic

It’s hard to argue with that logic, so far as it goes. My rejoinder to Dr. Doctorow was:

a. Putin-Lavrov have done a lot right. Rope-a-dope and gradual has brought NATO into a short-supply-line killing field where Russia has all the advantages

b. Russia has, so far, militarily beaten NATO. It has politically and economically weakened EU, grown the Russian economy, and garnered nearly all non-West political empathy .vs. the West

I’ll point out that Dr. Doctorow’s points and my points can both be true at the same time. His main intent is to provoke a dialog _within_ Russia; no one outside Russia has any influence on the subject, so what Westerners think of the subject is mostly irrelevant except to the degree that the subject encourages the West’s “Russia is about to fall apart” narrative.

I ask myself “why this dialog, and why now?

Will the Bar concede that the SMO is now approaching a crucial juncture, wherein rope-a-dope has to give way to much more active warfare, with longer supply lines, and may involve striking directly at EU members of NATO, should the provocations escalate further? Will you agree to that?

It occurs to me that Putin himself may be stirring this pot. Is he preparing the Russian society for what must come next? If you read Doctorow’s essays, he reports that  this set of considerations is very much front-and-center within Russia’s key stakeholders and their polity. Doctorow is reporting, not making it up from whole cloth. He provides sources.

So the question is “why this topic, why now, and what does it mean for what comes next?”

I’ll be interested to hear what the Bar has to say.

A couple of obsevations:
Todd’s preface was posted and discussed 3 days ago on X.
Dollar = MIC = Energy
There are three constants: (population) overshoot, (resource) exhaustion, (environmental) degradation
And one variable: (social) organization
The key to having any meaningful insight into both historical affairs and current policy challenges is to understand the dynamics between these factors.
The foundation of our extant money system (aka rules based order) was laid only a few centuries ago – a mere blink in time.
It’s easy to become confused by the various tactical machinations as the empire struggles to maintain control.

  1. That’s how we end up with these superfluous essays, which attempt to explain – and excite endless debate – current events without first identifying core drivers and (the nature of ie juice) participating players, thereby completely missing the existentional battle facing humanity.

Well, there’s no time to argue about the other wars, but Putin “gave that right” by invading Ukraine, an unnecessary move.
But what about the other side of the argument, which goes that Putin invaded Ukraine to preempt US/NATO’s inexorable militarization of the country? After all, had the latter continued, aggressive Western meddling in Russian domestic affairs – up to and including forms of hybrid warfare – would have followed. That could easily have led to a hot war.
Maybe Putin’s decision to wage war in Ukraine saved the world from something far, far worse.

Totally agree with you. To put trans and climate change at the same level is completely nuts.
But Todd needs to feed his readership who shares the same obsession.
This is just some à la carte thought : everyone can chose on the menu wtf they like, naturally picking on trans (that’s an MoA MO), ignoring what he says about climate change and already complaining that he didn’t mention covid…
And although he’s right about Russia and Western leadership (I didn’t need to read from him something I already knew), Todd is desperately hoping to reiterate his USSR prediction feat.

New Trier High School. A public school that acts like an elite private school.
It occurred to me this is the apotheosis of American civilization. This is the pinnacle of what can be achieved by the connected or the successful. A nightmare on very fine wheels.
The kids are the elite of the very near future and are all nuts.

——–
I know whereof you speak, having attended a nearby Jesuit prep school back in the 60s. My school was as elitist then as you describe NT today. To be fair, they were a private college prep school. What would one expect. But we did get a real education, and the worst drugs were tobacco and alcohol.
The mileau you described developed over the course of fifty years, predominantly after the 1960s. It was a slow, orchestrated congealing of what had been a living culture into a plasticized corporate product. In the 50s and 60s, consumer goods had not yet been segregated by class. The Kennedy’s had the same TV and refrigerator as the working man. Mass industrialization hadn’t created differentiated product lines for everything.
Still, the sixties essentially broke the consensus that we were in this together. For every war protestor there was a construction worker. Debate was replaced by argument, and politics started down the slope to today’s elite-vetted uniparty puppets.
Sometime in the 1970s, under the blows of Watergate and the defeat in Viet Nam, the old, organic American “culture” (whatever that was worth) died and was replaced by narcissistic consumerism. At first, the change was more evidenced by absence than presence. Public intellectuals vanished. Public education began to be defunded and replaced by philistine C-suite bean counters.
I am fond of the following quote:

Civilizations die in the measure that they become conscious of themselves. They realize, they lose heart, the propulsion of the unconscious motive is no longer there. Desperately they begin to copy themselves in the mirror. It is no use.
– Lawrence Durrell, Alexandria Quartet

Today’s elites live in this corporate illusion and know nothing different. Yet they sense it is all fake, hence the retreat into drugs and status symbols.
One of the things that signifies our current paralysis for me is the omnipresence of store muzak from the 1960s. When I was a kid in the 1960s, no one was playing tunes from 1900, if the stores had music at all. Those old songs were considered naive and passe.
To sum up this rambling:
Post war America, the Boomer generation’s experience of affluence and scientific progress has been frozen in time. The muzak is just one bit of evidence. The obsession with automobiles, an icon of the then dying American heavy industry dominance, continues with your Range Rovers and other ludicrous vehicles. The whole Rebel Consumer shtick (Thomas Frank when he was firing on all cylinders), beloved posturing of Techbros, is a sad aping of the 1960s counterculture.
All this elite conspicuous consumption will continue until the whole mess collapses into outright fascism.

Call it what u will @58
You are right- far from universal primary education leading to democracy, it has always been designed to mitigate popular pressure on the state by reinforcing the class founded hierarchies that democrats identified as the root problem.
This was quite evident both to early C19th democrats, such as William Cobbett and to defenders of the aristocracy, such as Benjamin Disraeli.
Anyone looking at the world around them will notice that the return of the most vulgar form of liberalism and individualism- neo-liberalism- coincided with the maturing, in the western world, of the baby boom’s cohort of university graduates.
