Moon of Alabama Brecht quote
September 24, 2025
Welcome At The New Home Of Moon of Alabama

You have reached the new server home for Moon of Alabama.

MoA posts and comments published between September 6 and September 23 have not yet been uploaded here. (I depend on Typepad to do be able to do that.)

There are also still some minor design issues.

Please let me know of any problems with this web-site or the blog’s functionality.

Comments

I notice slightly different MoA fonts under Kubuntu vs. Win10, both using Brave Browser
https://postimg.cc/vch6VsDz

Perhaps this simply reflects different default fonts under Linux vs. Windows.

Specifically: On Linux the font is without serifs, on widows the font is with serif. Not a problem, just an observation. The ‘sans-serif’ font on linux is my favourite.

Sorry for not being more explicit. I had all of the browsers still open with the text only pages showing. I simply refreshed them one by one and everyone came up showing the graphics. I inspected the code on each of them and all had the proper address for CSS. As for it remembering my data, that kind of works, the fields are not populated for name and email but as soon as I type a d my email address appears below the box and I can click on it and autofill the box.

Well done! you can do the other tweaks at your leisure such as allowing preview and perhaps an edit function which would be fantastic.

barfly tools still works too which is helpful to me to skip over those posters with a very low signal to noise ratios

thanks again for all you have done.

works fine for me on Safari, Firefox, and Brave. That was fast b!

Posted by: Noirette | Sep 24 2025 15:36 utc | 103

That is the same comments look and behavior as before. They have always been indented.
I may change that in the future but its not a priority project.

Posted by: b | Sep 24 2025 13:31 utc | 57

I think I was biased by two factors: (1) a very long blockquote on the Ukraine thread, which combined with the next point and line breaks give average line width of about 2cm for blockquotes on my phone! For normal comment text the indent is 18% of screen width each side, which seems quite a lot; (2) the text size on my phone is significantly larger than the old site, which means far fewer words per line, plus even greater shortening of the line by word break which exaggerates the effect. (Your 28 word reply took 7 lines, average 4 words per line.)

However for my elderly eyes the increased font size is definitely a big improvement for readability (before it was far too small on my phone), despite excessively long column inches. So if in the future you decide to reduce the indentation on devices with narrow screens*, I’ll be pleased about that. But I absolutely agree that it is not a priority at this time!

* For example indentation as a percentage of screen width instead of absolute value, or better an absolute value subject to a maximum as percentage of screen width.

I am on an old Mac Mini with old Opera and the font has changed size a couple of times….got bigger….and then I refresh and then gone….don’t worry about it….when the dust settles I will make the font big enough for these old eyes

Thanks for your efforts

I noticed one functionality issue:

1. Go to the MoA main page
2. Click the name of the latest poster in the list at right

Unless my memory plays me a trick, this used to cause a jump to that specific user comment. Now it just jumps to the article itself. It would be great if that feature could be restored.

Posted by: Norwegian | Sep 24 2025 15:48 utc | 106

@Norwegian | Sep 24 2025 15:48 utc | 105

Update: It seems to work as before when the comment is on page 1 of the article, but not if the comment is on page 2 or higher.

Huzzah! Very responsive servers with very low latency.

Posted by: Skiffer | Sep 24 2025 15:57 utc | 108

Hmm – there should not be a new font-size …

Posted by: b | Sep 24 2025 15:19 utc | 94

For me the main text font is substantially larger (huge improvement for me) but only on the smartphone. On my laptop the font is small, the same as before.

Posted by: BM | Sep 24 2025 15:59 utc | 109

I am sorry for not contributing to you as all I have I have sent to Gaza.I think they are done now.

Posted by: stranger | Sep 24 2025 16:02 utc | 110

New feature! Comments “next page” now has an index … good!

About fonts, one gets accustomed to them over time, but this does not mean all are equal. I prefer super-elegantly sleeked styles such as univers.

The old MoA font was good, but not perfect I feel, for instance when displaying numerals. Testing a5g37a8 A1lLf1tH

The new site on my firefox does come across a bit cleaner than before. I’m happy.

Norwegian @90 <– See for clearing local DNS cache in Linux

Yes, that should work for Linux. I just figured Windows users would be less familiar with such nitpicky details of how their machine works and could benefit from a simple recipe.

Jeremy Rhymings-Lang @115: “Re: fonts, for those using Firefox there is the option in Firefox>Settings to set fonts locally, over-riding site-produced fonts; not just on MoA but on all sites.”

WARNING! Don’t do this! This will break the layout of most websites because tables, images, and other “assets” will not scale with the changed font size. You will end up with text flowing outside of the elements that are supposed to contain it and overlapping with other text.

A better solution is if you have a mouse with a scroll wheel, hold the control key down and scroll up and down to increase and decrease the whole-page scaling (zooming). The control key with the trackpad gesture for scrolling works similarly. This approach keeps the elements on the webpage proportional while you increase the text size.

control and +/- does the same. My firefox keeps me informed about the current zoom level so I don’t get paranoid.

There is another minor change with the update, apart from the absence of a Preview button.
The MoA icon on my homepage links used to be a capital M in a black circle. It is now the right-facing MoA smile which looks like a crescent moon.

I can’t say for sure that the font is bigger as others have said, but the text definitely looks sharper and clearer on my 4k monitor.

test

Posted by: Peter AU1 | Sep 24 2025 19:10 utc | 141

Based on my experience the font is Georgia on Windows (Macintosh too?) and Liberation Sans on Linux.
On Android it’s Roboto on Firefox and Droid Serif on Brave and Chrome. Not sure how and why two different typefaces are used across different browsers on the same platform.
Some of us may rely on the distinction between capital i and lowercase L, which neither Liberation Sans nor Roboto offer, but serif faces invariably do (though the 1 in Georgia has had people refer to karlof1 as karlofi). So if it’s not too much trouble to set a serif font the default across all…

All fine and dandy, performance some notches above the previous site

E-mail to be removed as mandatory IMHO

Preview would be nice

GOOD JOB

Hey look, the page navigation system also has links to individual pages!

Posted by: joey_n | Sep 24 2025 19:20 utc | 144

Yes, the go to post (instead of first page might be critical for 300+ comment posts)

But once again, the important part is well done

Posted by: Newbie | Sep 24 2025 19:20 utc | 145

Major sigh of relief here, thanks to all who made this migration happen. These things are not simple, and it seems like the routing (URL pattern) is the same! So that means bookmarks and emailed links from the old site will still work … respect.

Looks like the name field requires at least some text, and the email field checks for text@text, and that is done via browser validation.

Aha! There is also server-side validation that is more stringent, accepting only text@text.text as an email address.

Still very much as open as before although email was not required in the typepad version.

I will assume that other testers have checked the formatting and blockquotes, links etc.

Others have posted that the javascript add-ons work as well.

Amazing

Posted by: jonku | Sep 24 2025 19:26 utc | 146

Interesting, I used a fake email address and it did not render with my name in the previous comment, assuming server-side validation that it is a functional address?

This one has “volunteers@wikileaks.org” as the email, let’s see if it renders as a mailto link.

Posted by: jonku | Sep 24 2025 19:30 utc | 147

no problems.Very smooth transition so far. I am happy that MOA has a new home and please keep up the good work of countering the lying MSM media, especialy their near-total blockage and censoring of the Gaza ongoing Genocide

Posted by: earthling1 | Sep 24 2025 19:40 utc | 149

nope — maybe the email is saved within the system but not rendered for other users, or maybe a bug.

Posted by: jonku | Sep 24 2025 19:45 utc | 150

Very nice work, actually on android, typepad, actually in Greece, everything is working fine, thanks a lot for the work! As others mentioned : missing the preview in comment writing.
AND
don’t forget to take breakS, eat and sleep a lot, it’s the better way to find back those code problems you were not able to find anymore 😉
+ guess you know about online tools that allows you to see your site like if you were looking at it true others devices like smartphones etc? Firefox and Chrome do have some similar tools inside.
May the Force be with you.

OK, what con go wrong…
There seems to be something screwed up in CSS or the HTML logic. Let’s see if I can plug this into a comment.
In the HTML source (Ctrl-U in firefox), you can see that every comment is opened by

div class=”comment odd alt thread-odd thread-alt depth-1 comments-body” id=”comment-1195322″
(There are less than and greater than at each end, but I am not sure if the are parsed in the comment here)

At the end of each comment, therer are 2 /div, when there should be only one. Firefox handles this OK, but it should be fixed.

I tried this early afternoon and got a page like being not totally constructed and a warning on my computer of an insecure site if I insisted going on…

Now I am getting a similar page as the old blog, only I am noticing some slight changes, included that I am not registered with my usual nick….

Congrats B on pulling off the Great Blog Migration of 2025! You not only got the moving van packed and unloaded in record time, but somehow managed to put all the furniture back exactly where it was. The page index in the comments is a handy new feature. Same old look, shinier new brain. Hats off, sir. May your posts be fiery, your comment threads orderly, and your hosting bills forever smaller.

Posted by: Juan Moment | Sep 24 2025 21:17 utc | 162

Hi, again, I am notcing that when you pick a comment is the feed of comments in the right side of the front page the system is not redirecting you to that comment directly, as happened in the old blog, but to the head of the thread where the commnet was made instead, then you have to look for the comment….

May be it needs any fixing?

Anyway, thanks for the fast migration….

You can, and your comment will still appear, but your name won’t appear on the list on the right side of the main page. Unless it’s been fixed in the meantime, you won’t see me in that list. Everything else works (except as others have said: no preview, and no direct link from the main page to a comment past page 1), but I’m alarmed that email address is now a required field, even if it can be faked out as I did here.

Posted by: Dalit | Sep 24 2025 22:33 utc | 170

… though the 1 in Georgia font has had people refer to karlof1 as karlofi…

I can’t tell if I first misread it, or read a misspelling, but after years of giggling to myself while intentionally misreading it, I decided to use it at times, as did others … forever the most cutest thing on MoA 1.0

Posted by: persiflo | Sep 24 2025 22:40 utc | 171

Loooong time lurker, first comment. I was pleasantly surprised to see that one of the poster names I had blocked on the old site with the Tampermonkey/Greasemonkey “idiotfilter” script on the old site was still blocked! The icon at the top of the page is unresponsive so not sure of this was on purpose or just because you copied some of the CSS naming.

With the new system will it be possible to implement an “ignore” function or will a workaround like the idiotfilter need to be devised once more?

Thanks for all that you do.

B. If you read this.

May i ask you a question.

What ever happend to “Tom Gard”. He was the reason i started reading MOA. I am aware of that he was very criticle of this blog, to say the least.

I am not gonna open this can of worms. But beside he throwing constant hizzy fits about how other people are to stupid (i remember him attacking you Bernhard and Karlof), yet he was an incredible analyst. The beginning of Syria and Ukraine he usually had very interesting perspectives.

Do you know what happen to him?

Posted by: El Lissitzky | Sep 25 2025 1:47 utc | 192

Congrats. The site looks nigh identical. It loaded without mishap, instantly, from Australia.

One minor (potential) problem with DNS for the [no wwww.] moonofalabama.de (A) record. It is 216.92.3.120 which is not the website.

It should probably be a CNAME record to http://www.moonofalabama.org, which will lead via moonofalabama.org.www635.your-server.de to 168.119.26.115.

The NS records for moonofalabama.de give NS1|NS2.pairnic.com. Perhaps speak with them (pairnic) about the standard solution for the redirect from ‘moonofalabama.org’ to the ‘www’ version.

NEW SET UP

U post fairly regularly, but am not prolific.
This new platform seems fine, and does not need superfluous bells and whistles.

Well done b and all who assisted in the migration.

@El Lissitzky
I don’t even remember a Tom Guard …

@all
Thanks for the feed-back.

There is one bug and one feature missing:
– Commentator link on the mainpage does not work if the comment is on a paginated thread (i.e. appears on page 2,3,.. of a post)
– Preview for comments isn’t there

Both are noted and will be worked on. This will likely take a day or two.

There is a font issues but I am very unsure of what the problem is. Line-height? Some people like the new look so I am not sure what to do about it. (If you find the font to be too small use Ctrl and + to resize the page.)

Email is now a required field because that will help me to find comments with hijacked usernames. It will never be shown to other readers. I don’t care what the actual email is, i.e. it can be fake, but it should be consistent.

If there are any other problems please let me know about them.
