Abducted Gaza hospital chief suffering from ‘scabies and boils’ in Israeli detention: Lawyer

Hussam Abu Safiya, chief of Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital, is enduring brutal conditions in Israeli detention, confined to near-total darkness, exposed to sunlight for just 30 minutes a month, and suffering from scabies and boils, his lawyer revealed.
Gheed Qassem, speaking after a rare visit to a detention center in the Israeli-occupied territories, disclosed that Abu Safiya and his nephew Hussam Zaher are “exposed to sunlight for only thirty minutes a month, while scabies and boils ravage their bodies, and they are forced to remain in the same clothes.”
“As for bathing, it lasts only two minutes, and they have each lost a third of their body weight. They are in dire need of dermatologists and medicines to treat the widespread skin diseases and infections,” Qassem said.
Abu Safiya was abducted on December 27, 2024, when Israeli forces raided Kamal Adwan Hospital, forcing patients and medical staff to evacuate while detaining others.
Qassem also relayed a message from Abu Safiya, who has become a symbol of steadfastness and resistance for Palestinians against Israeli repression.
“I entered in the name of humanity, and I will leave in the name of humanity. I am the one who was abducted from inside the hospital. We will remain on our land and continue to provide healthcare services to the people, God willing, even from a tent,” the Palestinian doctor said.
Abu Safiya’s family reported that he endured harsh conditions during the initial days of his detention, including 24 days in solitary confinement before being transferred to Ofer Prison in the occupied West Bank, where he continues to experience poor treatment.
The family has urged the international community to pressure Israel to provide Abu Safiya with adequate food and medical care and to secure his immediate release.
The Israeli military said the 51-year-old Abu Safiya was among those taken for questioning over alleged ties to the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.
The Palestinian doctor had reportedly suffered multiple broken ribs due to torture at the hands of Israeli interrogators. His lawyers reported that the torture was meant to force Dr. Abu Safiya to make false confessions that would be used against him.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and various UN agencies have stated that they received no updates about his safety since his detention.
Israel has a long history of committing war crimes against medical workers, as well as attacks against healthcare infrastructure, including hospitals.
According to WHO data, at least 94% of all hospitals in the Gaza Strip have been damaged or destroyed by the Israeli regime.

The Belgian government has finally found a stance about the recognition of a Palestinian state that it will lannounce during the next summit at the UN: Belgium will legally recognise a Palestinian State if the Hamas is not in the government and gives up its weapons and if the hostages are liberated.
The fact that the Israeli government has clearly stated more than once that THERE WILL NEVER BE A PALESTINIAN STATE, that while openly liquidating Gaza and its population (that’s a way to meet the two condition btw), the same Israeli government quietly allows Israeli settlers to expel by force and weapons Palestinian inhabitants of the West Bank is just an insignificant detail.
And before coming to this stance, the two major parties of the ruling coalition kept repeating that the conditions for a recognition of the Palestinian state are not met (no Palestinian authority to represent the Palestinians and negotiation with Israeli government mandatory) and doing it now could aggravate the situation by causing Netanyahu government to further stiffen up (!)
The right moment to legally recognise a Palestinian state is hence waiting that:
– no Palestinians are anymore alive
– no territories aren’t anymore available for a Palestinian state to exist.

Ireland’s central bank to stop approving sale of Israeli ‘war bonds’
Ireland’s central bank has said it will no longer approve the sale of Israeli “war bonds” in a landmark move. The Central Bank of Ireland is the only regulating authority in the EU that approves Israel’s war bonds for sale across the bloc.
The Development Company for Israel Ltd sells the bonds on Israel’s behalf to fund the country’s military operations in Gaza.

Central Bank governor Gabriel Makhlouf announced the move on Monday, saying: “The Central Bank’s approval of the 2024 [Israeli bond] prospectus will expire today, 1 September 2025.

However, an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) last July marked a turning point on reconsidering the enactment of the Irish bill.
The ICJ concluded that Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territories is “unlawful” and the country should “end its presence in the occupied Palestinian territory as rapidly as possible”.
Ireland’s government, together with Spain and Norway, recognised the state of Palestine in May 2024.

Although I don’t deny the second sentence of yours, I don’t think the phrase quoted of mine is a stretch. I think it is a facet of what is occurring, somewhere.
Genocide, extermination, murder, theft displacement etc. are all realities that co-exist, that are subscribed to / rejected as motive by whatever strata of people according to their own form of perception. Ritual sacrifice is part of that panoply, defined along the lines of (belief in/attempt at) ‘direct empowerment by killing of others’ , and not meaning ‘benefiting from the fact that others are now absent’.

I think you misunderstand the use of the phrase, which is understandable because the concept is so twisted or evil that it does not enter into our, or ordinary, comprehension (fortunately). The reality implied by the phrase is not that of self sacrifice, but of sacrificing that of others as petition for own reward.
The ritual side is obvious enough, and there is a long history of ‘use of’ sacrifice in the region, or religion. Look at the culture as ritual, “…you are not part of the unit until you have killed a [fill in the blank] “.
