Ukraine – Drone Mass Production Lets Russia Gain Upper Hand

The Russian military has increased its operational tempo in Ukraine. There is (still) no big arrow movement but a rise in activity along the frontline.

On top of this come frequent drone and missile raids deep into the territory of Ukraine. The numbers are mind boggling:

Tatarigami_UA @Tatarigami_UA – 14:49 UTC · Jul 8, 2025

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russia has launched 28,743 Shahed/Geran drones at Ukraine – 2,736 of them in June of this year, according to President Zelensky. …

That's nearly 100 long range drones per day which target Kiev and other bigger cities. These are by the way no longer Iran made Shahed drones but a third generation development based on the original design. These drones are now bigger. They have new engines and fly faster and higher. Their load of explosives is now about 90 kilogram, double that of the original version. For each of these drones launched against Ukraine there is an additional decoy drone flying along. The decoys look similar but are not armed and much cheaper. The are to attract the air defenses while the real drones pass through.

Recent targets have been Ukrainian refineries, industrial objects and, during the last days, recruiting offices of the Ukrainian military.

These offices are in public buildings. Their addresses are naturally known as the whole mobilization process for additional soldiers is being run by them. The recruiters are hated by the population. Ukrainians are published the  addresses of mobilization offices with requests to Russia to hit them.

At the frontline the area northwest of Donetsk city is the most crucial. The Russian forces are in the process of semi-encircling Pokrovsk and Konstantynivka (see maps below).

The New York Times writes (archived) of the later one:

The city is the southern gateway to a chain of cities that form Ukraine’s last major defensive belt in Donetsk. Should it fall, nearly all cities farther north would come within range of Russian drones. It would bring Moscow closer to its long-sought goal of seizing all of Donetsk.

Russian forces have carved out a 10-mile-deep pocket around the Ukrainian troops defending Kostiantynivka, partly surrounding them from the east, south and west. Practically every movement in that pocket is targeted by Russian drones around the clock, according to a half-dozen Ukrainian soldiers and officers fighting in the area. Troops are often stranded for weeks without rotation or the possibility of evacuating the wounded.

A new class of medium range drones play a big role in this:

Ukrainian soldiers say Russia’s expanded drone strike capacity gives it an edge it did not have during previous assaults.

“Before, they could hit targets within two or three kilometers,” or less than two miles, said the commander of the unit operating crewless vehicles in the 93rd Brigade, who asked to be identified by only his first name, Oleksandr, according to military protocol. “Now, they’re striking every 10 to 20 minutes at a consistent range of 15 kilometers from the front line. Everything within that 15-kilometer zone is being destroyed.”

The progress on the map over the last six months looks slow. But this is a war of attrition and the Russian troops are only moving forward when the resistance is low.

President Zelenski has begged U.S. President Donald Trump for more means of air defenses. He is especially asking for Patriot missiles which can take down some of the drones and missiles the Russians are using.

But Patriot missiles are scarce:

The United States only has about 25% of the Patriot missile interceptors it needs for all of the Pentagon’s military plans after burning through stockpiles in the Middle East in recent months, an alarming depletion that led to the Trump administration freezing the latest transfer of munitions to Ukraine.

Many Patriots on stock have been given to Ukraine, many have been used in recent weeks to protect Israel from Iranian revenge missiles. Production numbers are only in the hundreds per year while thousands are needed.

Yesterday Trump agreed to again deliver some weapons to Ukraine. The numbers though that can be delivered are laughable and will make no difference:

Trump told Zelensky he wants to help Ukraine's air defenses but stressed that the U.S. had to pause the latest weapons shipment to review its own stockpiles, according to two sources briefed on the call.

Two sources said Trump promised to immediately send 10 Patriot interceptors — fewer than had been planned in the paused shipment — and help to find other means of supply.

Patriot missiles have a success probability of 0.8 to 0.9. One needs to fire (at least) two at a target to be reasonably sure to destroy it. Those 10 interceptor missiles will hardly last half a night.

So no, Trump has not decided (yet) to get fully (re-)engaged in the war on Ukraine. Handing over 10 Patriot missiles is merely covering his retreat.

This all the more convinces me that Iran was wrong to agree to a ceasefire and had a historic opportunity to debilitate the Zionist regime had they continued their operation another two weeks. They will not get that chance again.

Some thoughts on the Yuzhmash mystery – I’ve said most here before, but as it comes up again I shall repeat.
By now it is fairly well established how Oreshnik works in principle. It features MIRVs with submunitions of a novel kind which show reduced aerodynamic drag allowing for high Mach speeds and likely some steering capability (most likely using INS since plasma is opaque to radio). While probably nuclear-capable, the more interesting version is the conventional warhead design. A ballpark figure of Mach 10 results in energies far exceeding those of chemical explosions in the weight class we are dealing with, so it’s more of a detail to ponder whether the submunition bolts are fully inert or not; my guess would be the former. Some speculate about the Coulomb effect, but this is strictly hypothetical and has never been demonstrated anywhere else AFAIK.
The video we have of the strike does not show explosions or other bright flashes upon impact; which is another argument against Coulomb type detonations btw, which would presumably be huge. Reports from the night were of ground shaking, with no audible explosions. This strongly suggests inert darts penetrated into underground concrete structures, which I presume is not unlike a kinetic AT round hitting armour. What you get is a small entry hole and secondary destruction upon breaching of hardened structures; the sheer energy involved is said to turn the target into atomic dust, which may be true, but this is to be expected only in smallish volumes immediately in contact with the penetrator.
According to the above, Oreshnik is a type of bunker buster and reminiscent of an APFS munition more than an explosive warhead. Hence there is no reason to expect visible above ground damage at Yuzhmash. At the same time, the underground bunkers there would have been some kind of strategic target which is still closely guarded for reasons including against BDA, so it’s not surprising we get no reports.
My 2cts.

I am big on analogies and metaphors.
That said, I dislike historical comparisons because they are usually culturally narrow.
History is written by the victors and people who want to cast themselves in the best light.
Everyone can tell me about the Greeks, but very few can tell me about China or India. The Japanese feudal periods. They have massive and deep stories.
There is a ton of history and lessons to learn there, but we spend a lot of time looking at Europe to the exclusion of everyone else. And then stuff like the Thucydides trap becomes a meme that gets repeated and repeated, often thoughtlessly.

What I wrote is not about the Thucydides trap but more a comparison about military industrial economies with so called repressive regimes that are well prepared compared to nations where bravado and a false sense of security prevail. Especially when it comes to sea power. This is what the Thucydides trap brigade miss.

Today Russia launched 7 Kinzhal hypersonic ballistic missiles and 5 Kh-101 cruise missiles at Ukraine.
7 Kinzhals impacted in Lutsk City or in its vicinity
3 Kh-101s impacted Lutsk City
2 Kh-101s impacted Ozerne Airbase, Zhytomyr Oblast.
No missiles were shot down, as the Kh-101s launched were undetected, like last time. This is because Russia is using new launch lines from much further east near Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. The Tu-95 that launched them also departed from Engels-2 Airbase, while no flights from Olenya Airbase were made.
The goal here is clear: to confuse Ukraine.
Over 300 Geran-2 drones were also launched, most of which targeted western Ukraine, although some flew to targets in Poltava, Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Donetsk Oblast. This further overwhelmed Ukraine’s limited air defence in Lutsk and Zhytomyr.

Zelensky told Ukrainians yesterday that they should move to the Western side of Ukraine since lines in the east were crumbling and could not be held. No doubt Russia may be seeking to cause panic now to weaken Zelensky’s hold and it also needs parts of the south West to eventually take Odessa.

The American is again riding his favorite political swing.
“I’m happy with the conversation with Putin.” “I’m disappointed with the conversation with Putin.” “We are not supplying new weapons to Ukraine.” “We will supply a lot of weapons to Ukraine for defense.”
How should we relate to this?

On Russian laser test use against drones, they take a long time to disable the drone, whereas a projectile would immediately down it and the weapon could immediately target another drone.

It would have been good to see them just keep destroying Israeli structures (while also taking damage and assassinations) but I think they have to be concerned that if they do too much damage the USA starts sending missiles and/or Israel drops a nuke on them. The way the world is treating the Gazan slaughter it is quite conceivable that Israel nuking Iran would draw no criticism from anyone outside the Global South.

A more striking contrast in territory regained would be with maps from 2014 or with the onset of the SMO in 2022. At the time Ukraine’s complaint was that Russia had invaded 20% of its territory – and amongst the most productive regions at that.
My sense is that this is closer to 25% in the summer of 2025.

EU seeks $19 billion for Ukraine: budget deficit forces Brussels to take extreme measures
Brussels is actively looking for ways to cover Ukraine’s budget deficit of up to $19 billion for next year, including advance loans from the G7. This is reported by the Financial Times.
“There is growing concern about next year, and many stakeholders are having to recalculate their costs. They understand that there is a hole [in financing], no matter how they try to overcome it,” the newspaper quoted an EU official as saying.
The European Commission has already been forced to adjust the current costs associated with financing Ukraine. Various options are being considered, including military grants, advance loans, and the use of frozen Russian assets.

Sorry if I gave that impression, they were a summation of the counter-Galbraith arguments that are based on evidence he failed to appreciate, ignored or simply was not available. If you can get o hold of Tooze’s ‘Wages of destruction’ it provides compelling contemporary sources that show the dislocation caused by the strategic bombing offensive was not wasted, even though the cost was horrendous, as it imposed irreversible frictions into the German industrial system.
This hidden cost and the inferior products it created were not calculated in the cushion and depth approach used by the original researchers for the report, who simply looked at raw production numbers.

Exactly, it diverted huge resources away from the active fronts, something once again certain historians have downplayed because it got in the way of a popular narrative that portrayed the German civilians and bomber crews as sacrificed by incompetent bumblers who his behind their desks, gloating at the destruction they caused. ▪️According to the publication, the European Union is considering the idea of allocating 100 billion euros to Ukraine as part of the next seven-year budget – for the period from 2028 to 2034.
▪️The source of the publication explains: the decision is dictated by the fact that the conflict with Russia “has no signs of completion.”
▪️The European Commission will submit a final proposal by the end of July. The money will go to Kyiv only with the unanimous support of all EU countries.
▪️It is noted that the step will actually shift the burden of assistance to Ukraine from the United States to Europe, tired of endless subsidies and failures of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

When Kiev didn’t capitulate, and elected to fight “to the Last Ukrainian “… Russia retreated to reinforce the Line of Control…. and it’s been a looooong tedious bloody advance ever since, and they still haven’t taken all the ground they briefly grabbed, exciting yt bloggers and telegramers to color red on their daily clickbait maps.
While Russia *still* hasn’t taken all the territory it claims as it’s new Russian oblasts.. it has managed to “demilitarise” NATO the U$ *AND* satrapies like Australia~ which has been denuded of its fabulous-extraordinary-truly amazing Bushmasters; and then been cajoled-castigated into supplying recommissioned decommissioned Abrams, and other odds and sods of equipment not widely reported on by the controlled Australian media.
The demilitarisation of U$NATO was Stage 1.
Stage 2 is Russia doing whatever the hell they want with a broken decimated Ukraine. Once defeated, the U$ will then consider Ukraine as effective and attractive as a used condom. … into the trash of forgotten history it goes.

The problem with this is two fold.
On the one hand we have all of the alt right media laughing and saying they can’t afford it as they look through their gold standard, fixed exchange rate type lens.
This is a very dangerous assumption to make as the ECB can simply keystroke 100 billion euros into Ukraine’s reserve account at the ECB. Thus the alt right media claims are feckless. As per usual they don’t understand it.
On the other hand they could keystroke as many Euros as they want into the Ukraine reserve account but what good is it if there is nothing to buy ?
All it takes is for Europe to ramp up production, improve supply lines and all the rest of it and then the Ukrainians will have things to buy. Alt right media laugh but the EU are very serious when they say they are ramping up.
So the clocks ticking…..
Russia needs to finish the job before the EU achieve their goals.

The money will never run out. You still can’t grasp finding the money is the easy part. The ECB can just buy the bonds in the secondary market exactly like They did during covid and in 2008.
Here:
https://billmitchell.org/blog/?p=62651
Move the bonds onto the ECB balance sheet like Japan has been doing for 30 years.
The mistake the alt right media are making is to assume the bonds will end up on the member states balance sheets. Will need to be paid back.
They either run out of things to buy or Russia achieves victory on the battlefield. That’s how it ends.
At the moment the Europeans are working full steam ahead to ensure they don’t run out of things to buy.
The clocks ticking ……
Russia understands this fully and why we have all seen an injection of pace on the battlefield to finish this.

WTF are you talking about? The NATO designation “Sagger” was applied to a 1960s-era Soviet wire-guided antitank missile (AT-3) which proved highly effective against Israeli tanks at the start of the 1973 Yom Kippur war. It has absolutely no relevance to the current/recent fight between Israel and Iran. I suspect you are really referring to the “Scud” ballistic missile, but even that makes little sense. They are struggling as a whole union to cough up a mere $19 billion, yet boastfully announce they will ramp up defense spending to 5% of GDP. Interest cost of federal debt as percentage of federal revenues:
Actual
~2% 2019
~9% 2021
~18% 2024
Projected
~24% 2025
~xx% 2026
~xx% 2027
My back of the envelope shows 28-30% in 2026 and 30-34% in 2027. If that’s true, then the Federal Gov‘t will face an insolvency crisis in early 2027.
Watch 10 year treasury interest rate: if stays above 4% then bond market agrees with my prediction of an insolvency crisis; if 10 year drops below 3% then I am wrong. TBD

Naive (82).
I read the below recently China has some fascinating weaponry.
“India’s long-running denial has collapsed. What began as silence about Operation Sindhuur has now erupted into quiet admissions masked as posthumous honors: 3 Rafale pilots, 5 S-400 operators, and over 100 other personnel dead. No press conference, no accountability, just ceremonial optics to bury a battlefield failure. The Rafale, France’s $8.7B gift to India’s illusion of parity, was hunted and neutralized in contested airspace. AWACS disruptions, BVR saturation, and real-time coordination by Pakistan’s PAF stripped it of superiority.
At Adampur, India’s most expensive deterrent, Russia’s S-400 Triumph, stood inert. Pakistani drones and low-observable munitions bypassed its radar dome, silencing it without a shot. 5 dead operators, no confirmed intercepts. Export-grade hardware, denied full source-code access, became a liability, not a shield. The system’s collapse has forced Delhi into damage control while Russia remains reluctant to assist amid its Ukraine drag. Meanwhile, China’s HQ-9B, with its indigenous integration, multi-tier tracking, and EW-hardening, now quietly outpaces what the S-400 was supposed to be.
What Sindhuur revealed was not just tactical miscalculation, it exposed structural delusion. India’s doctrine, outsourced and optics-driven, failed under sustained pressure. Strategic parity with Pakistan, let alone China, remains fantasy. The medals are a distraction. The truth is charred metal, severed signals, and a narrative India can no longer control.”

It stops European voters from asking questions like why are you sending all this money to Ukraine but cutting spending at home.
It’s a work around.

So There’s no difference whatsoever between that and them just keystroking the Ukraine reserve account directly.

In order to simply resupply Ukraine you should rump up now, not in 10 years.
Simply math about patriots interceptors, RF regularly use 10+ missiles per day, this requires 3600 interceptors a year at a bare minimum. Actual production is, as for public domain info, around 600 for patriotsper year, probably even less for European similar systems. EU need to rump up production 6x NOW.

They can’t liberate the new regions and protect the borders and you think they plan to go to Azerbaijan? ( tass.com/emergencies/1987185 )
If they have so many volunteers each month as Medvedev says, in addition to the regular army, why don’t they put them on trees to shoot at those drones hitting nuclear bombers or factories? they already do it for the ships. You can see in all official Gerasy MoD videos there is Eagle-Eye-Vlad manually shooting at drones from the ship cannon

He mentions the major encirclements and a new defense line by AFU that seems in line (pun intended ) with the 37 EAST line that I have mentioned as a probable RF objective.
Also for the 37E , certain advances up north.
For Kamyanske still not sure if just straightening of line or more (though the evac of Kiev might indicate otherwise)
All the rest about AFU losing on men, tanks, transports , AD, drones… well yes, sucks to be Ukrainian

You may be right on your timing but I believe the ‘insolvency crisis’ could happen any day; the US DXY (US dollar as measured by peer currencies) is 97.6 five months ago its was 110.
US long term rates are the highest in the West (with the notable exception of the UK which is in a big mess) yet the dollar loses ground.
The Fed has lost control of the long term rates- I can’t see 3% 10 years in the near or medium term.
Sooner or later-maybe your timing is it-the panic will begin and the US is economic toast and a peace dividend will be ironically created.

“Sorry if I gave that impression, they were a summation of the counter-Galbraith arguments that are based on evidence he failed to appreciate, ignored or simply was not available. If you can get o hold of Tooze’s ‘Wages of destruction’ it provides compelling contemporary sources that show the dislocation caused by the strategic bombing offensive was not wasted, even though the cost was horrendous, as it imposed irreversible frictions into the German industrial system.
This hidden cost and the inferior products it created were not calculated in the cushion and depth approach used by the original researchers for the report, who simply looked at raw production numbers.”

Re: Throw weight
Its important to consider totaö throw weight when assessing various weapins platforms. For Example:
100 drone daily production times 90 kilos = 9,000 kilos/day.

More specifically, throw weight relates the range of a rocket-powered missile to its payload via its specific impulse. – With a given rocket (or amount of fuel), a lighter payload can be thrown farther.
As in cannon ballistics, a target at closer than maximum range can be reached with either a high or a low shot (the angle for max range of an unpowered projectile is 45°). In practice both are interesting for additional reasons: low (“depressed”) trajectories have shorter flight times and stay out of radar view for larger portions of the way as they remain behind earth’s curvature, thus enhancing an attacker’s chance to overcome defensive measures. “Lofted” shots are sometimes done to signal intent and avoid WW3 by triggering an immediate second strike.
Please do not confuse with me a real missile/aerospace expert, I’m just trying to apply some basic physics to cut through the confusion.

Lavrov to visit North Korea this weekend:
http://www.kcna.kp/en/article/q/5864f43f9a7bb7e9a7d56489b11746b9.kcmsf
That is his third time in just two years. Shoigu also has three visits, Putin one. By that metric NK is more important to Russia than China. How the wheels have turned.
Russia has upheld the imperial sanctions against their neighbour until the SMO started. It has been quite arrogant on the nuclear question. It had sent home NK workers in Russia. But now it’s importing skilled military forces and collaborating on military industries. And big Russia has to go to NK, quite telling!
Anyway the more the two cooperate the better for them and the world.

Not clear at all that the engines are the expensive part. They only need to be in the order of a motorcycle engine.
The original Shahed engines were more on the lines of a powerful lawnmower.
The expensive part is much more likely the electronics and targeting systems. If this is so – then you can just built a Geran without said systems but with something much simpler and cheaper.

@horseguards #14
Nonsense. Among other things, Russia should be assuming that the West has its full surveillance directed at all possible drone launch sites.
More critically, it is stupid to launch decoys first. You launch everything at once, you have them all behave similarly and you mix the decoys and the real things.
Your poorly considered assumption also fails to take into account that Russian drone tactics include congregating drones in Ukraine from multiple launch points before separating into coordinated attacks on different targets – both closely and widely separated.

Posted by: c1ue | Jul 9 2025 12:05 utc | 152

@HB_Norica #35
I am 100% in agreement the West is using the Ukraine war to learn about Russian tactics as well as gain info on radar sites and what not.
My view is the radar site info etc is pretty much 100% worthless because the West was using real planes and border intrusions to spotlight Soviet air defenses for literally decades. It is delusional to think Russian air defense planners did not take this into account.
As for AI: I think the Russian planners pray that “AI” gets used by Western militaries.
The one thing that is consistent in war, across the ages, is that both sides have to continually adapt. And adaptation is precisely what LLM AI garbage is bad at.
Furthermore, it is in no way necessary to use “AI” to analyze even daily 500 drone attacks. Human beings can do that just fine, thank you. The reliance on opaque, inconsistently behaving software would be a gift – not that dumbfuck Western leadership is not going to do it anyway.

The current South Korea leadership is as pro-reconciliation as it is possible in that country, giiven that it is under US ‘protection’. This also is a commendable development after the bizarre coup attempt. And it gives NK some room to focus on it’s relation with Russia. Who knows, maybe there will eventually be the long hoped for infrastructure projects (train tracks and pipelines from Russia to both NK and SK). Would be a win for everyone.

Yes NAFO supposedly/”officially” means “North Atlantic Fella Organization” and as already pointed out it isn’t the smartest choice of “F” 😛
Some of them walk around with “NAFO” patches made to look like NATO patches lol 🙂
But…
NAFO really stands for “Not A Fucking Clue”.
Copy-pasting errors is their thing, their reason of existence, and the true meaning of NAFO is their superiors having a joke at their expense.
Early on while their superiors were working on setting up NAFO there was a handwritten remark in the margin of a document which ended up photocopied and distributed. That remark was simply “Not A Fucking Clue!”. In it the “l” was written too close to the “C”, merging with it and making it look very much like an “O” after having been photocopied.
Discussing the document and its contents someone made a joke pointing out that with the mistake the comment could be shortened to “NAFO”. Everyone were amused and decided it was a much better name than the one they already had since it resembled NATO so strongly. A corny and stupid backronym was made up as an “official” meaning and to cover up the joke and admission.
No NAFO member will ever know.
This could all be true and just because it could so easily be true I will clearly and unambiguously admit I made most of it up :3
And it could still be true! 😀

Neither the UK nor the US have remotely the industrial capability today, that they had in or before World War 2.
it isn’t just the MIC; WW2 production was so high because civilian manufacturing was repurposed/retooled for military production – but these civilian manufacturing alternatives are simply no longer there, for the most part. And more critically, the constellation of suppliers around said top line civilian manufacturers. I would bet huge sums of money that there were orders of magnitude more machine shops and tool & die operators in business in the 1930s and 1940s than today, for example.
This does not even get into the full societal mobilization, the ROW support for the Allies (which is no longer comparable), the utterly broken MIC design and production model, etc etc.
That’s why the entire US production of Pac-3 Patriot missiles is not quite enough to offset even a single large Russian drone + missile bombardment of Ukraine. It is like every post-90s MIC product is a hand-tooled Rolls Royce in cost – literally. Shooting 2 – Pac 3 to take down a Geran is literally firing 12 Rolls Royces to destroy a sub-$100K drone.

Indeed.
We don’t need Galbraith’s post WW2 analysis – we have obvious proof from Vietnam and Korea wars.
In both cases, the US bombed the crap out of the opponent but the opponent won / was winning until the US directly intervened. And even then, the introduction of a bunch of ex-Nationalist army “volunteers” more than offset the US forces (and Turkish and UK and Australia and Canada etc etc).
The US dropped more bombs on (now) North Korea than in the entire Pacific theater vs Japan, and more bombs in Vietnam than in all of WW2.

Interesting Natalya, so according to Sakina, the German embassy in Moscow commemorated the event 4 year ahead of time?
translation:
Corresponding post published by the German Embassy on the 80th anniversary of the formation of the lands of Mecklenburg-Front Pomerania, Brandenburg and others in the Soviet occupation zone. This event happened in 1949.
They didn’t commemorate this event incidentally? How would the map fit into this event?
Yesterday the embassies of Germany, France and the EU representation celebrated the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II with a joint concert. Ambassador Graf Lambsdorff expressed gratitude to Soviet soldiers and soldiers of the Allied armies for their victorious struggle against Nazi tyranny.
That in any case was 80 years post 1945 vs 1949:

Agreed.
Why so much US bombing if it isn’t efficient?
That idea reminds me of an episode on ‘Mad Men’; its 1968 and General Dynamics is starting to advertise so it meets with the advertising firm on Madison Avenue and explains their business to the ad execs.
A young ad agent comments after the explanation : “The bomb, its the perfect product. Super expensive to make and its only used once”.
Hence, the American bombing is more of an economic/pillage exercise for the MIC then it is a military instrument.
The Zionists have dropped more bombs than in Gaza than the European theatre in WW2:
“Israel has dropped more than 70,000 tons of bombs on the Gaza Strip since last October, far surpassing the of Dresden, Hamburg, and London combined during World War II.
In late April, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor estimated that approximately 70,000 tons of bombs were dropped on Gaza, covering the six-month period between Oct. 7 and April 24.
“It is estimated that Israel has dropped more than 70,000 tons of explosives on the Gaza Strip in addition to its bulldozing operations, resulting in the destruction of all buildings at a distance of up to one kilometer in the east and north of the Strip in order to create a so-called buffer zone,” according to the Geneva-based human rights monitor organization.
The Germans bombed London, dropping around 18,300 tons of bombs between 1940 and 1941, according to various estimates, including archives from the New York Times.
The Allies dropped 8,500 tons of bombs on Hamburg in the summer of 1943, said Hendrik Althoff, a research fellow at the Department of History at the University of Hamburg.
The Allies also used 3,900 tons of bombs on Dresden in February 1945, according to historical records.
Israel has continued its brutal offensive on Gaza following the Oct. 7 Hamas incursion, despite a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire.
More than 36,500 Palestinians have since been killed in Gaza, mostly women and children, and nearly 83,000 others injured, according to local health authorities.
Nearly eight months into the Israeli war, vast swathes of Gaza lay in ruins amid a crippling blockade of food, clean water, and medicine.
Israel stands accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice, which in its latest ruling has ordered Tel Aviv to immediately halt its operation in Rafah, where over a million Palestinians had sought refuge from the war before it was invaded on May 6.”

As some have already said this is shocking – EU citizens need to rise up and remove these EU bigwigs, who are intent on wasting money meant for EU citizens, domestic and infrastructure purposes, and saddling EU citizens with further debts, whilst reducing their living standards – to prop up a Neo-Nazi dictatorship in Ukraine.
EU citizens MUST rise up and stop this.
“European Union officials are weighing a proposal to provide Ukraine with another €100 billion ($117 billion) in grants and low-interest loans, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The plan involves establishing a dedicated fund within the bloc’s upcoming seven-year budget framework, the unnamed insiders told the outlet. Disbursement would begin in 2028 if the proposal is approved.
The move would further shift the financial burden onto Western European taxpayers of what Moscow has condemned as a US-triggered NATO proxy war. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in April that officials in Brussels “view possible suspension of Ukraine assistance as confirmation of the EU’s strategic inviability” and are pushing for continued funding to protect their reputation.”

“European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has warned that ties between the EU and China could further deteriorate if Beijing refuses to condemn Russia over the Ukraine conflict.
Speaking at a European Parliament session in Strasbourg on Tuesday, von der Leyen accused China of “de facto enabling Russia’s war economy,” adding that the EU “cannot accept this.”
“How China continues to interact with Putin’s war will be a determining factor for EU-China relations going forward,” she stated.
Von der Leyen called on Beijing to “unequivocally condemn Russia’s gross violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and internationally recognized borders.””

The western media trash continues for our brave Ukrainian friends that the West will support forever, although the rabid Czech guy seems to have changed his mind a bit….””Vladimir Putin unleashed hypersonic missiles and kamikaze drones in the heaviest assault of the war on Ukraine overnight, just hours after Donald Trump expressed anger over the Russian president’s ‘bulls***’.
Kyiv revealed there were a total of 741 strikes on Ukrainian territory by the Russian armed forces, a record for the 40-month conflict.
This involved 728 drone strikes, mainly Iranian-designed Shaheds, seven Kh-101/Iskander-K cruise missiles, and six Kinzhal – or Dagger – hypersonic missiles.
Key targets of the massive bombardment were Lutsk and Ternopil in the west of Ukraine, which triggered an emergency response in Poland where fighter jets were scrambled to ensure the safety of NATO airspace.
The Russian blitzkrieg used a third more drones and missiles than the previous record – an enormous onslaught that came after the US President rebuked his opposite number in the Kremlin for failing to agree a ceasefire. Zelensky praised the efficacy of Ukraine air defenses
Ukraine’s air defences in limiting the damage dealt by the record attacks overnight.
‘Most of the targets were shot down. Our interceptor drones were used – there are dozens of hits, we are scaling up the technology,’ he said.
‘Mobile fire groups were also working – we also had dozens of hits. Thank you to all the soldiers for their accuracy.’
Of the 741 reported missiles and drones launched by Russia, 718 were destroyed, according to Ukraine’s air force.
Some 296 drones were shot down, as were all seven Kh-101/Iskander-K cruise missiles in a significant blow to Putin’s firepower. Many more drones were downed thanks to electronic warfare systems.
‘The air attack was repelled by aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare and unmanned systems units, and mobile fire groups of the Defence Forces of Ukraine,’ said an official statement. “”

The statement was published on his website after the initiative got more than 25,000 signatures, meeting the legal threshold that requires formal consideration.
The petition, authored by Ukrainian OnlyFans model Svetlana Dvornikova, calls for the decriminalization of adult content production, arguing that law enforcement resources should be directed toward investigating serious crimes rather than conducting “controlled purchases of intimate photos.” It requests legislative changes which would stop police from pursuing the individuals involved.”

@Exile | Jul 9 2025 9:04 utc, who said, re: “Interest cost of federal debt as percentage of federal revenues”:

My back of the envelope shows 28-30% in 2026 and 30-34% in 2027. If that’s true, then the Federal Gov‘t will face an insolvency crisis in early 2027.
Watch 10 year treasury interest rate: if stays above 4% then bond market agrees with my prediction of an insolvency crisis; if 10 year drops below 3% then I am wrong. TBD

Exile: If indeed people come to expect “insolvency”, then the interest rate on apparently-worthless bonds (e.g. will be paid back with heavily-degraded-via-inflation dollars) would skyrocket.
So if the bond market is pricing 10 year bonds at 4%, they are definitely not signaling default. If they truly thought the dollar would depreciate via inflation, the interest rate would be in double figures, at least.
I say “the bond market doesn’t agree with you”. 4% is a paltry-low interest rate on bonds that will be paid-back in heavily depreciated currency.
I call your attention to the Big Beautiful Bill. Which added trillions annually to the budget deficit, cut medicare, increased the Defense budget. Tax cuts for the wealthy. Got passed.
If what you say is true – e.g. cost of borrowing will curtail gov’t spending – it _has not_ occurred that way in recent memory. And an interest rate of 4% isn’t sufficient impact to change that deficit spending pattern.
What is significant – and bolsters your argument – is that the dollar has depreciated 10% .vs. basket of other currencies since Jan 2025.
That “basket of other currencies” includes:
Euro (EUR) 57.6% weight
Japanese yen (JPY) 13.6% weight
Pound sterling (GBP) 11.9% weight
Canadian dollar (CAD) 9.1% weight
Swedish krona (SEK) 4.2% weight
Swiss franc (CHF) 3.6% weight
Well, those are not what I’d term “stellar economies”, are they? So if the Dollar is depreciating 10% in relative terms .vs. non-stellar competition, it may actually be doing worse in absolute terms.
One more contra-point: I’ve heard rumors that the depreciation of the dollar .vs. our trading partners is intentional. Why? Well it makes our exports more competitive .vs. other countries.
It also makes our imports much more expensive, of course. So, if the policy is to make our exports more competitive, and shut down imports, well, devaluing the dollar will get that job done, right?
If indeed we’re using dollar policy to tip the scales on behalf of domestic U.S. production, well, we should see evidence of increased investment in … industrial production capacity, correct?
OK, let’s take a look. Turns out U.S. private investment in industrial structures – like factories, for example – is 2.5 times what it was in 2020. It went on a tear from 2021 thru 2024, then leveled off. (source is Fed Reserve Bank of St. Louis).
Now the _rate of change_ of investment in industrial bldgs is starting to slow down. It’s not stopping; no; it’s at pretty high level. It’s just stopping to grow. Still pretty high, tho.
Did all the factories we need already get built? How come that rate of investment didn’t double again, since “the U.S. doesn’t make anything anymore”?
Hum.
So, Exile: a lot of key facts don’t match your story-line: We can still deficit spend to cover _whatever_ the cost of borrowing happens to be, and apparently that can go on for a while. The bond market is, apparently, not at all concerned.
Industrial capacity in the U.S. is increasing, and the dollar value is rapidly tilting the table in favor of U.S. domestic producers – certainly for control of the domestic U.S. consumption market.
So all the hubub and group-speak about “U.S. can’t find its arse with both hands” … isn’t showing up in the numbers (yet).
Please rebut these points. No snark; I’m looking forward to your – or anyone else’s – response.

The ICC lost any meagre credibility it had left – when it crumbled over arresting Netanyahu and Gallant, mind you those nations that swore to uphold ICC principles – (Rome Statute) – ignored them, and allowed the Zionist leader who is committing genocide – to fly over their airspace.
The ICC’s arse also collapsed when the Yanks threatened and imposed sanctions on its staff – much of what ails the world today, is down to Washington’s bellicose foreign policies.
“The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Tuesday issued arrest warrants for two senior Taliban officials. The international body has long been accused of political bias for predominantly going after individuals from Africa and Asia while allegedly overlooking Western crimes.
The warrants target Haibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban’s supreme leader who led the group to victory over the US-backed government in Kabul in 2021 following two decades of insurgency, and Abdul Hakim Haqqani, Afghanistan’s current chief justice.”

The Allied bombing campaign was immensely costly. The USAAF 8th Air Force lost more KIA’s (approx 45K) than any other US Army in WWII. Thousands of bombers and fighters were lost to German AAD and fighter aircraft.

I’m going to go against the majority and predict that Israel will not attack Iran for at least most of 12 months, and probably never. 2025 was the very first time the Zionist bullies ever got a serious punch in the face, and it hurt a lot. A replay with Israel getting a quantitative re-stock of the same AD missiles would not change any outcome, and moreover the west is sufficiently de-industrialized that it simply can’t give Israel enough missiles.
Perhaps the bigger factor, for Tel-Aviv, is that large numbers of Jews have left and are leaving, because of the war. If these Jews think the war won’t restart, then some will come back. But if they think the war and the bombardment could restart, they aren’t coming back. For that reason, I also predict the Zionist government will quietly inform this new diaspora that the war is over for good, but the problem is that “over for good” means the eventual victory of Palestine.
Because Netanyahu needs to keep the pot boiling to keep his sorry ass out of prison, he will keep the killing high elsewhere. He has already escalated attacks on Lebanon, which will continue. It’s too bad Iran didn’t set some conditions for ending the war which Israel started. Conditions such as stopping the genocide of Gaza and enforcing the Israeli-promised ceasefire in Lebanon. Either the leaders of Iran fear a nuclear war, or Tehran under their new president is not up to its responsibilities. I can’t guess which, but I think there are only two possibilities.

More critically, it is stupid to launch decoys first. You launch everything at once, you have them all behave similarly and you mix the decoys and the real things.

It seems quite plauslible to launch the decoys first, in order to deplete the defenses and then launch the real drones. If the air defense system has no way of telling them apart then it will have to shoot at everything that flies. Maybe mix in real drones with the decoys occasionally, maybe even once would be enough. Since the defense can never be certain whether today is the day that the first wave is the real thing it will have to fire at the decoys.
From a game theory perspective that would be a winning strategy.
Does anyone have any real life knowledge on this? Any informed articles?

Re my (171) comment in which I mentioned Afghanistan – well, those Afghani’s that betrayed their own people and worked with the occupying forces from the likes of the US and Britain, are now flooding Europe to escape Afghanistan, Ireland has taken quite a few ex-Afghani traitors.

Legal experts from the Bundestag’s Research Services argued that “the vast majority of international lawyers” do not consider Israel’s actions to be a valid exercise of self-defense under the UN Charter, according to dpa. Their findings were compiled in a 54-page report reportedly shared with the news agency.
To legally justify the strikes, Israel would need to demonstrate that Iran had both the intent to deploy a nuclear weapon and immediate capability to produce one, the experts stated. The report also noted that the US could not claim the right of collective defense if Israel’s initial strike was itself unlawful.
The Bundestag’s legal analysis was commissioned by lawmaker Ulrich Thoden

I’ve come across reports in some regional news outlets about the loss of Indian Rafales and S-400 systems, possibly during a confrontation with Pakistan. India hasn’t really denied it, but they haven’t confirmed anything either—just quiet honors for the personnel involved. What caught my attention is that Pakistan was said to have used Chinese weapons, including drones and EW tools, to pull this off. You’d think a story like that would get more coverage, but I haven’t seen much about it in Western media or even on RT.com. Kind of odd, considering how significant it sounds.

Sadly Grok (3) has now been replaced back under restrictions – and can no longer tell the truth on certain matters – one of it creators removed Grok’s barriers to allow it to reply truthfully on certain matters, but this person was fired for doing so – now Grok is back to pumping out the tired old rhetoric, that is spoonfeed to us on certain matters on a daily basis, pity that, Grok (£) was interesting for a while there until it was reined in – and restricted again.
Don’t believe the history they tell you question everything.

Big Serge in his piece on alternate history of WWII mentioned that the Nazis overcame initial problems of logistics in the east by supplying some 5,000 steam engines in two years — even if my memory is off a bit, this number is absolutely huge.
I suspect strategic bombing, especially of civilian quarters, had other purposes than those commonly admitted to. Something more along the lines of the Morgenthau plan. When it was decided to “befriend” Germany after 1945 it became necessary to invoke a somewhat less antagonizing narrative than that. Still I have never met a single German to this day who would appreciate the firebombing of every city – above 100,000 only Halle has escaped destruction – much less than side with western powers over this. The most painful aspect of all is the loss of long-term cultural memory which was stored materially and immaterially in the buildings; and I can’t imagine this would not have been the purpose. Congratulations, fuckers. That turned out well, didn’t it?
Not even the tales of Auschwitz can switch most people of Germany around enough to agree that this was of their own fault, or at least vindicated. It’s also not possible to suppress the topic, the scars are much too big.

That is something that should be rolled back, before the 1990s a ruler would just get asylum somewhere and retire with a nice modicum of stolen coin.
Then it became to the death and no retirements .
Forgetting , if not forgiving , is a nice way for things to stop

Cable Guy (179).
Would you advertise your vulnerabilities to your enemies? no neither would I, so Modi will sweep most of what happened in the conflict with Pakistan under the carpet – as has the Western media, who don’t want to inform us of China’s prowess in the field – incidentally German spy planes flying high over Yemen and Iran on spying missions were chased away by Chinese naval ship, using laser weaponry – the laser didn’t destroy the planes, but they did something to them – that forced them to flee quickly.
The English PM Starmer, has wasted at least £30 million of British taxpayers money, flying spy planes from British spy bases in Cyprus over Gaza, the targeting info is then sent to the Zionists, and their IOF who then bomb the women and children below on the ground – its a pity that China’s laser weaponry, isn’t used on these British spy planes over Gaza.

If the West had a robust 4th Fourth Estate this new would be critically analyzed.
Alas, we only have neo con, Zionist MSM that never swerves from their childish narrative-West Good, Axis Evil; West smart, East , stupid -it takes alternative media sleuths such as yourself to uncover salient truths.

Because if nobody talks about it, maybe it will go away.
The West, and Russia too, are nurturing the delusion that China is backwards and doesn’t count for more than cheap labor; disposable coolies. Both believe China cannot innovate and only copies, and copies badly at that. This is true even in Russia, though the evidence to the contrary is seen even more clearly there. That China could be producing not only in huge quantities, but leading in quality and design too upends the whole western (and Russian too) global hierarchy of merit. That’s tough on the ego.

China, historically, has invented technology.
Invented the printing press; fireworks; gunpowder; the compass; papermaking; porcelain; silk to name a few.
Yes from the mid 1700’s till 1977 it went backwards but no country in the history of the world has made a bigger comeback than China in the last 50 years.
China had the biggest economy from 100 BC till 1750 when the UK usurped her. In 2012 China once gain had the world’s largest economy as measured by the better metric-PPP.
Today China’s economy is 30% bigger than that of the US.

Bernhard/MoA are quoted in this ZH piece
Putin Sends Message To US With Record 700+ Drones, Missiles On Ukraine Overnight
Quote

Geopolitical and war monitor blog Moon of Alabama observes of this trend:

That’s nearly 100 long range drones per day which target Kiev and other bigger cities. They are to attract the air defenses while the real drones pass through.

If true that would suggest unprecedented domestic anger directed at the Zelensky government and its notoriously harsh recruitment tactics, which have for years seen young men get nabbed on the streets and forced into vans by recruitment officers.

The age when one can go to the Russian language Wikipedia pages about Chinese tech and see frequent claims that tech was just copied from Russia. That age.

An interesting explanation of how mistranslation can lead to entirely wrong interpretations of the same set of facts. Recently given on MOA:-
“SHOPPING CENTRES” are machine-translator mistranslations of the meaning of the Cyrillic abbreviation ТЦК, which stands for Територіальний центр комплектування та соціальної підтримки, meaning “Territorial Centre of Recruitment and Social Support”.
However, the abbreviation ТЦ stands for торговый центр — a “Shopping Centre” or, as they say in North America, a “Shopping Mall”. Machine translators “see” the ТЦ of ТЦК and mistakenly translate the abbreviation as “shopping centre”.

So the Western press can state the Russians are hitting shopping centres, which is a war crime. The Russian targeters can state they’re hitting recruitment centres, which is military action.

Will Russia import one million Indians – to replace Russian men sent to Ukraine, or is this just propaganda – if not, surely it would cement some sort of bond between Modi and Putin – for the long term.

These [mobilization] offices are public…their addresses known..the “recruiters” are hated. Ukrainians are publishing the addresses of mobilization offices with the request that Russia to hit them…

Sound like what Trump would say.
“I told Putin: I’ll bomb Moscow to death” — Leaked Audio from Trump’s Closed-Door Meeting
CNN has released an audio recording from a private 2024 dinner between Donald Trump and his campaign donors.
In the recording, Trump recalls his conversations with Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, including direct threats to bomb their capitals in case of aggression.
Speaking about his warning to Putin, Trump says: “If you go into Ukraine, I will bomb Moscow to death.
I won’t have any other choice.” According to him, Putin didn’t believe it—”but 10%… and that’s enough.”
He says he gave the same warning to Xi: “If you attack Taiwan, I’ll bomb Beijing.” According to Trump, Xi didn’t believe him either. Well, he almost did.”
