The underlying reasons are: power distribution, market shares, commodities. In this specific case, the main question is how the USA deals with power competition. The US position is eroding everywhere: economically, militarily, diplomatically/culturally.
One way forward is accepting this and making business in the new world. There are proponents for this within the US elites. Another way is to use the military potential built up over decades; the war choice. Even then, war isn’t automatic: the resources spent now cannot be used later against China. In game theory, they’d say this is a “hot position”.
I could see Netanyahu at least partially being motivated by visions of the end times, although he is obviously also motivated by extremely short term, mundane matters (war = no jail). For some of Trump’s *voters*, the religion matters. For the man and his team, not so much.

Fun fact about most modern combat aircraft. They cannot land with both a full belly of fuel and a full weapons load out.
Outside of the superbug and naval rafale none of the NATO fighters can do it. And they can only do it on a long runway, not on a ship. That means either they have to take off with a minimal weapons loadout or they have to expend most of their ordinance before landing in order to not fuck up the undercarriage or worse if landing with a full tank of fuel. So if their plan is to tank up before landing in order to have enough fuel to take off with a decent load of weapons they are in a use it or lose it situation every mission. If you are correct in your assessment that they no longer have fuel stores at their bases they are going to go through ordinance at a stupid rate with a very limited effective target engagement.

Nice commentary. Seems like they need enough fuel to get in the air and linger long enough to fuel up, so I don’t think they need to land with a full tank. On the way back, depending on where they went, they’ll be thirsty and take on some fuel over Syria or Iraq.

I see Macron is trying to arrange a ceasefire so negotiations can commence with Iran according to the Al-Mayadeen breaking news ticker. All that has emerged from the G-7 meeting which Trump has left early to return to his War Room. Macron: Americans have “offered” to negotiate with Iran.
Ceasefires are only begged for by the losing side. The 9th Wave’s been launched:

Since there are fewer updates thanks to Izzie censorship, I thought I’d take a look.
First impressions:
i) it’s quite good overall in production
Somebody listening could easily mistake it for the real David Attenborough and absorb its content uncritically.
Content wise it reminded me of something you might read in Global Times.
If you listen carefully there is a lot of repetition, use of common cliches and a lot of filler that conveys little in a lot of words.
ii) clearly makes heavy use if AI/LLMS – definitely it is using text to speech to generate the narration.
It may also have used AI to generate the text. Someone skilled with getting AI to produce specific and structured long form responses to a smattering of factual information, a et of narrative directives and some constraints on interpretation for certain groups (regional actors, the global south etc).
That being said it could have easily been written by an averagely talented English/humanities undergraduate or a workaday opinion writer for any number of daily broadsheets or news magazines. The fact that those possibilities are indistinguishable should give humanities graduates and hack journalists real fear for future employment.
Either way it is a lengthy uncontroversial screed which fells remarkably forgettable.
iii) Choosing David Attenborough is a master stroke as he is a well known narrator with a particular style of intonation, one which has been well used over the years by (amongst others) to convey an authoritative narrative in an engaging and entertaining manner. The simulation is a very passable implementation of both his voice and his manner of speaking. The image of him has been seriously digitally enhanced and though he appears to be standing in a light snow shower, his lips do not move and nor does he blink. A good thing IMO.
iv) the channel is relatively new and has a few videos about Islam and a few on the Iran-Israeli conflict. It is clearly pro-Iran but without sounding too partisan. Though difficult to figure out who the owner is and what there motivations are, it is easy to discover that the video is synthetically produced.
All in all, quite clever, relatively engaging and mostly forgettable content. I don’t think I’ll be on he edge of my seat waiting for the next instalment.

Al-Mayadeen has another interesting item, “Analysis finds Israeli missile defenses may crumble by day 18 of war”, that anyone watching the videos of missile strikes will immediately see is very wrong. Here’re the two main paragraphs:

In a detailed thread shared on Monday, the account estimated that “Israel” and allies possess between 950 and 1,120 ballistic missile defense (BMD) interceptors, including Arrow-2 and Arrow-3 systems, David’s Sling batteries, a limited number of THAAD launchers deployed in al-Naqab, and SM-3 and SM-6 interceptors onboard two US Navy destroyers stationed nearby.
Based on this stockpile, the analysis concluded that defending against a sustained barrage of 50 to 70 Iranian ballistic missiles per day would require the expenditure of between 72 and 84 interceptors daily, assuming an average of 1.2 to 1.4 interceptors needed per missile.

As we’ve seen, many more missiles and drones are being used and many more interceptors are launched per missile than the “1.2-1.4 … per missile.” My initial logistical guess at the Zionists number of interceptors was from 2-3,000, while this report says about half-one-third that amount. I was also guessing that Iran would fire roughly 300 missiles and drones per wave, while having about 10,000 missiles to use. And to fire the interceptors you need launchers with probably at least a half-dozen already kaput, although that might be too few.
