Lies Used To Justify War On Iraq Get Reused To Wage War On Iran

Former CIA officer Larry Johnson opines:

I believe that Israel’s attack was part of a planned international intelligence and military operation, which included the participation and support of the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany. We got the first clue on May 31, when a UN watchdog issued two reports designed to create a narrative that Iran is a rogue nuclear state:

This tactic was employed in 2002/2003 to gin up a justification to attack Iraq, who the US insisted had weapons of mass destruction. We now know it was a lie, but the propaganda was effective in producing support in the US and Europe to invade Iraq. We’re seeing a similar effort today, only this time Iran is being falsely accused of enriching uranium to build a bomb. The Iraq WMD lie, like the current calumny against Iran, only has one purpose… justify military action in order to achieve regime change.

I have previously detailed the current IAEA operation to blame Iran over some alleged nuclear contamination which were found more than two decades ago.

During the build-up to the 2003 war on Iraq there was another lie that famously used to 'justify' the attack.

It was alleged that Iraq's leader Saddam Hussein was in cahoots with al-Qaeda, a terrorist group that had been created by the U.S. in Pakistan to fight against the Soviet supported government of Afghanistan.

Al-Qaeda was alleged to have committed attacks in the U.S. on 9/11 2001. Associating Iraq, which had fought against al-Qaeda inspired groups, with al-Qaeda itself was the second most cited lie used to justify the U.S. war on Iraq.

It is no wonder than that a similar narrative is now suddenly being build with regards to Iran.

David Ignatius, the unofficial CIA spokesman at the Washington Post, was told to publish this nonsense (archived):

But Iran has other means to hit back. One that has received little attention is its relationship with al-Qaeda affiliates. According to former U.S. counterterrorism officials, Tehran has built good relations with the new “de facto” al-Qaeda “emir,” Saif al-Adel, who took over in 2023 after Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed. These former officials say Adel helped manage WMD planning for Osama bin Laden.

The al-Qaeda affiliate in Yemen may pose a special danger. It’s headed by Saad bin Atef al-Awlaki, who posted a chilling video this month threatening U.S. officials. “Go after the scum of the earth and its greatest criminals,” he urged his followers, naming Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and former DOGE chief Elon Musk. “There are no red lines after all that has been happening to our people in Gaza,” he said. According to the Jerusalem Post, Awlaki urged Muslims in Europe and America to make sure there is “not a single safe place” for Jews.

Who would be those "former U.S. counterterrorism officials"? Mike Pompeo, John Bolton, or some other notorious liars?

Saif al-Adel, the "de facto" never declared leader of Al-Qaeda has since 2001 been rumored to be in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Egypt and Iran where he allegedly was once under house arrest and later exchanged against Iranian hostages held by al-Qaeda in Yemen.

Over more than two decades the Shia Iran has fought the Sunni al-Qaeda wherever it could. Its operations against Sunni extremist in Iraq and Syria were largely wars against al-Qaeda affiliated forces. In Yemen Iran is allied with the Houthi who are fighting against U.S. supported al-Qaeda aligned groups in the south of the country. A similar situation exists in Lebanon where Iran supported Hizbullah forces have for years feuded against al-Qaeda aligned radicals.

To claim that Iran is now somehow in cahoots with Saif al-Adel, an alleged but never declared leader of a more or less extinct al-Qaeda, is blatant nonsense.

David Ignatius is a much read 'opinion leader'. That he was told to trot out those nonsensical claims is a signal for others to pick up on them.

We can now expect lots of other second rated opinion writers to come up with similar tales.

It is, like the attempt to associated Iran with weapons of mass destruction, a narrative that will be used to further escalate the current regime change war on Iran.

Pakistan has always been in their crosshairs:
“The world Zionist movement should not be neglectful of the dangers of Pakistan to it. And Pakistan now should be its first target, for this ideological State is a threat to our existence. And Pakistan, the whole of it, hates the Jews and loves the Arabs.
“This lover of the Arabs is more dangerous to us than the Arabs themselves. For that matter, it is most essential for the world Zionism that it should now take immediate steps against Pakistan.
“Whereas the inhabitants of the Indian peninsula are Hindus whose hearts have been full of hatred towards Muslims, therefore, India is the most important base for us to work therefrom against Pakistan.
“It is essential that we exploit this base and strike and crush Pakistanis, enemies of Jews and Zionism, by all disguised and secret plans.”

Same. The “Israelis” are forbidding video of being taken at military bases. Most people are confined to the cities and many in bunkers, thus the only footage we’re really going to see is from balconies with a decent view into or out of the cities.

The Zios must be running low on AD ammo. Iran striking aircraft and ammo mfg. sites. Already in this thread reports of German, British support. I’m sure all being coordinated with the US. Only a matter of time before US bases in the area are targeted – likely by Iraqi resistance groups and/or Ansar Allah but blamed on Iran. Trump will have his hot war on Iran – the one that would have happened if the 2020 election had gone the other way.

To add to all this, anyone else notice the dearth of live coverage – or ANY coverage remotely approaching “BREAKING” or real-time in the US corporate media? Is it the same in the EU? Australia? I have to assume it is, based on the clip someone shared last night of the (US) Fox News reporter being shoved around and yelled at not to show the damage inflicted somewhere in Tel Aviv. I’m sure the Izzies have a TIGHT clampdown on ANY media reports, let alone those with video footage. Their system of gated and walled access to highways (to enforce apartheid) is likely being used to prevent freedom of movement for everyone, especially media right now.
Ex. Drudge Report hasn’t had a real update in roughly 18-20hrs. CNN mainly devoted to the Minnesota shootings. Those and other sites purporting to provide “live” updates are merely saying “More missiles from Iran” or recycling the same stories from last night by sticking a new timestamp (-12minutes, etc.) on them.
I’m sure the damage in Israel is extensive. We may never get to actually see it.

What better time to start WWIII when your country is demonstrating vehemently against the leader for manifold reasons, the potential for mass violence due to political and other divisively motivated unrest is rising, and when you have to use your National Guard and Marines, Police forces and FBI to control the masses due to domestic unrest.
On top of that, many of those connected with the armed forces who are expected to do the president’s ‘law enforcement’, work which may even be unconstitutional, are not supportive of the job they are being asked to do? Then there is the problem of finding new recruits since many don’t want to join the military these days.
What better opportunity is there for Islamic terrorism that could go undetected while the attention is distracted, and now is likely to be emboldened by the fact that the hypocrites in the US and West are active participants in terrorism themselves as we have seen in Russia and Israel and Iran. What better time to block the Hormuz Strait and cause a world oil crisis both in supply to the West and potential rise of oil prices?
What better time to cause WWIII as well when the same country has residual problems in Ukraine with Russia, is clearly involved with the attacks in Iran to bring about ‘regime change’ based on false charges again over weapons of mass distraction, and is also actively seeking a war with China and vocally supportive of Netanyahu and protecting Israel and by default its genocide of Palestinians?
What better country to attack than Iran where unlike Ukraine, China has oil interests and centuries of trade relationships that go back as far as the oldest Silk Roads and could motive it to join in?

IMO, the best way to assess damage to Zionist airbases is the degree of reduction in its offensive strike capabilities. Also as I stated before and I’m sure you know, the F-16s and F-35s need lots of hanger time to keep flying. The F-15s are better but not very much. The Zionists probably drank their own Kool-Aid and thought Iran didn’t have the capabilities it’s showing, and for those in the shelters at those air bases, that’s a big deal. Ground assets are required to ferry the bombs from their bunker to the shelter housing the aircraft and they aren’t driven by robots. Plus, if the attacks can be made almost constant, then runway damage doesn’t get repaired, which is something I omitted from my earlier notes on the issue. The pilots might get the higher pay, but their planes don’t fly without the mechanics and mass of ground personnel. Recall the trauma inflicted on US personnel back in 2020 during the retaliation for Soleimani’s murder. What’s happening at Zionist airbases is far more intense than what those US pukes experienced.

This is all true – about the flight vs. maintenance time as well. But they’re using Cyprus, which I think is out of range for most Iranian missiles. I don’t know what the carrying capacity is at whatever British or joint British-Izzie airfield(s) in Cyprus are, but I’m sure they’re conducting most maintenance there by this point.

Posted by: Tom_Q_Collins | Jun 15 2025 0:40 utc | 623

One thing is pretty clear. No AD system that these Israeli fuckers have (be it Arrow, THAAD, Patriot) can stop those hypersonic missiles. There are enough evidences already in the last 48 hours. If they can’t stop these Iranian missiles, we can know for sure that they don’t stop any Russian Hypersonic ones.

The Zios must be running low on AD ammo.
Posted by: Tom_Q_Collins | Jun 15 2025 0:24 utc | 626

It does appear that Iran led with the older, less accurate & less effective missiles in a bid to deplete Israel’s AD. More interesting to me was that drones — of which Iran has HUGE numbers — haven’t really been employed in any significant quantity yet. Given their drones are newer, more precise and battle-proven in Ukraine they could very well be holding them back for well-targeted swarm attacks once Iron Dome is truly exhausted.
It’s also instructive that the IDF fighters & attack helicopters are being used for AD, too.
The US is admittedly engaged in anti-missile defense with France & UK sending help. The West continues voluntarily disarming itself with no chance of timely replenishment.

There may be some of that, but its also conspiracy theory. Under what is taking place now right now and the fact that the West and US have greenlighted terrorism itself as a valid method against an enemy, Islamic terrorism can be well expected. It is thoroughly naive to believe it does not exist, nor that the conditions and motivations for it have not increased. As we have seen by the West, any country can use terrorism as a tactic. You miss my point about the US vulnerability towards it while its focus is divided by so many other problems including rising domestic unrest. To boot, even if what you said was true it does not mean that the future is known and that it could not happen.

IMO, the best way to assess damage to Zionist airbases is the degree of reduction in its offensive strike capabilities.
Posted by: karlof1 | Jun 15 2025 0:37 utc | 635

Agreed.
One of the determining factors in Israel’s win in 1967 was remarkable turnaround times on aircraft sorties. That’s a total non-starter these days, and frankly I’d be surprised if the F-35’s don’t render themselves unusable after minimal combat action. Just saw a video of F-4’s being actively engaged; hilarious when the West has been all over the RF (effectively) employing older equipment.

Posted by: TJandTheBear | Jun 15 2025 0:50 utc | 631

I don’t see any way, no how, no way that Trump and the neocons and Zionists in Congress (among both parties) decide it’s time to join ‘in earnest.’ The Zios depleted defenses are becoming more and more obvious as the newer videos trickle out. Triple-tap hypersonic strikes passing right by and making the Izzie AD seen in the air look meandering by comparison. Fewer and fewer sightings of Izzie AD being used at all.
This is looking bad for “Israel” – and as noted, we’re not seeing a fifth of the real action due to Zionazi media/video clampdowns and people being forced to take cover. Trump and the Borg will never allow Iran to win the real war -OR- the narrative war. It would be devastating to the image that they think the US has in the world. I’m seeing a combination of suppression/intentional lack of meaningful coverage and pro-“Israel” messaging regarding the damages done to Iran in the first two waves of Zio attacks. That was before their own AD was depleted.
We’re going to see the US enter this thing openly in a short time. The PR myth circulating in the past few weeks that “Israel doesn’t need anyone’s help” is being destroyed.

Thanks for your reply. The hanger queens will need their touch-ups just as much at Cyprus, plus the issue of logistics still remains. Refueling also becomes an issue and again there’s the logistical issue I asked earlier–how well prepared were the Zionists and their allies? How many cruise missiles were stocked at Cyprus for example? I recall that most FUKUS stocks were very low thanks to Ukraine. Maybe the Germans will provide Tarus. And if Cyprus is used, where is Turkey in all this?
What Iran needs is a long-range jet interceptor capable of getting within AA missile range of the tankers. There are few of them, and without them no attacks on Iran from Cyprus or Occupied Palestine are possible.

I fully agree, even in non combat use they are constantly in need of maintenance, so much so that around 70% are undergoing lengthy maintenance most of the time and grounded. For some parts they are also dependent on Chinese rare earth alloys that even the Pentagon issued a security waiver over, given they cannot get it anywhere else and the US does not have the technology to make these alloys. These planes are also plagued with short range and are quite slow compared to many fighter aircraft. I think this is the first real public test of the F-35 aircraft in real combat situations so we’ll see if the predictions come true now.

It’s already happening. The US hasn’t sent all its weapons to Ukraine. And they’re itching to use the F-22s and F-35s, both of which carry several weapons systems that have not been given to Ukraine…or anyone, in any real numbers. The Saudis powder is dry too. They have a huge arsenal of US supplied military equipment that can probably be somehow temporarily reclaimed by the US.
The US and Germany are already refueling Izzie planes. They will need that more if in fact Cyprus becomes the defacto base of air operations due to damage to Izzie airfields/hangars.
Just wait. It’s a matter of time.

Posted by: a stone | Jun 15 2025 0:46 utc | 644
Well if Ukraine is any example to go by, hypersonics, missiles using decoy systems to confound the air defence rockets, hacking of electronic signals, the sheer cost of air defence and the ease in destroying the systems are all reasons why missiles are hard to stop as we now see in real time. The global South, China and Russia appear to be in advance of all this technology as well.

Speaking of the US defeat against Ansar Allah. Perhaps the Americans were doing two things at once. 1) Keeping some powder dry in anticipation of the looming conflict now unfolding and 2) Preserving plausible narrative “wins” and minimizing further embarrassing stories like F-18s falling off ships and at the time inevitable American service member casualties.

Posted by: Tom_Q_Collins | Jun 15 2025 1:10 utc | 653

They can dish it out, but can they take it? I guess we’ll find out. Bombs vs rockets with some drones and missiles thrown in. Last round the Iranians used large drone swarms to overwhelm AD, then rockets. Not so much now. I wonder what actual aircraft losses have been? Quite a few claimed, although the Israelis have been using very large numbers of them. As noted above maintenance is surely going to be an issue.
It also seems that the Iranians allowed the Israelis to believe that AD had been neutered, when in fact units were held in reserve and hidden, and likely lots of decoys were also employed. AD is more threatening to aircraft then rockets drones and missiles which can be used in mass allowing for attrition.

Speaking of other things that someone might share here.

TL/DR answer: NO. I presume the WILLINGNESS TO TRY. And the narrative war is much easier managed in the core of the imperium.

Don’t know… remember, there’s a large part of the Pentagon (including Hegseth) that is more concerned with China.
As much as I love the F-22 technically it’s an even greater maintenance nightmare. At least it’s not a basketcase like the F-35.

F22 – yeah for sure. And they’re saving those for China if they’re “smart” LOL.
But yes, I’ve said it before: I hope I’m wrong about Trump going to war directly with Iran. That wouldn’t be good for anyone. It just looks more and more likely as the Israelis begin to flounder on their own.

Posted by: Tom_Q_Collins | Jun 15 2025 1:15 utc | 657

pessimist, I think the Israelis hacked or spoofed the Iranian AD, the Iranians seem to have patched that vulnerability. Not sure it was intended, but the result was complacency just the same. This story is very old, the fat bull is lazy and hubris takes them out in the face of a leaner, more driven and determined foe

It is easy for American expats in the UK to develop a form of Stockholm syndrome whereby they take on the superiority complex of Brits vis-a-vis Yanks but also regularly say how much they love them. Finding them kind of cute. (Plus some Brits genuinely appreciate the greater freedom of thought and, in particular, ability to express honest emotions and talk about difficult emotional situations that Americans possess, which they cannot find among their compatriots/class colleagues.)

Another thing: Can all the bullshit talk by the media and Israel about how superior and virtually impenetrable the “Iron Dome” is finally fucking stop now?
It’s obviously worthless against hypersonics and combined drone & missile attacks. Sure it has probably prevented a few very preventable strikes and casualties, but it’s only real use is against Hezbollah and Hamas rockets, and some of the cheaper ones the Iranians and Ansar Allah uses.

No TJ, in 67 Israel took out Egypt’s Air Force while it was on the tarmac, self defense, don’t you know. Air power was none existent for the Arab forces
Posted by: Scottindallas | Jun 15 2025 1:05 utc | 666

Yes, that was certainly a factor, but the aircraft turnaround was one of THE major factors as they were used (much as they’re being employed now) for ground attack and not air-to-air. Israel was overwhelmingy outnumbered on the ground and it was only heroic efforts by the airforce ground crews that held the hordes at bay.

China does not want to move on Taiwan. That will only happen if the US provokes it. If you think China is planning an attack on Taiwan while the US is distracted you have swallowed the US propaganda. In any case what I originally wrote about is the US’s current vulnerability which I would say Trump is well causing. I’m not interested in skipping all over the place to simplistically discuss anything else when such subjects should be discussed elsewhere in greater depth.

that too is pure Hasbara. The Arab armies were ill equipped and not determined to fight. Early CIA assessments figured it would take 8 days for Israel to route all their enemies. Israel hid their tank numbers and again received the US but Richard Helms was wise to them. Israel’s ambassador came to LBJ for more support and LBJ put his arm around the ambassador, refusing him saying, “you’ll wipe their asses”

George, I don’t think they’re all that keen, but they’ve got such an opportunity with the US mired in two fronts, assuming they/we engage fully in ME. maybe a blockage of the sea lanes, more projection around the Philippines. It’s their duty as an ally, and I guarantee they’ll move to force the US to meet/project/faceoff.
China is interested in securing trade lanes and certainly sees the opportunity. Again, probably below invasion or actual engagement, but to force the US to show force, come to roll call in the South China Sea

The sortie rate was key to that initial destruction of enemy air forces…

The phrase “sortie turnaround” in the context of the 1967 Arab-Israeli War refers to the process of quickly refueling and rearming aircraft after a sortie, enabling them to launch another sortie in a short amount of time. This was a crucial factor in the Israeli Air Force’s (IAF) successful “Operation Focus,” their preemptive airstrike at the beginning of the war.
Here’s how it contributed to Israel’s victory:
Operation Focus: This was the IAF’s initial air attack designed to destroy the Egyptian Air Force on the ground and establish air superiority.
Rapid Turnaround Time: The Israeli ground crews were exceptionally skilled and efficient, achieving remarkably fast turnaround times. For example, some aircraft were refueled and rearmed in as little as 7 minutes and 30 seconds. This allowed the IAF to launch multiple attack waves in quick succession, overwhelming the Egyptian defenses.
Decimating the Egyptian Air Force: The rapid turnaround times, combined with precise planning and intelligence, allowed the IAF to catch much of the Egyptian Air Force on the ground and destroy them before they could become airborne. In just a few hours, the IAF significantly crippled the Egyptian air force.
Maintaining Air Supremacy: The ability to generate a high sortie rate enabled the IAF to maintain air superiority throughout the war, providing crucial support for Israeli ground forces and hindering Arab efforts to counter the Israeli advance.
Winning the War: The Israeli air supremacy achieved through Operation Focus and sustained through efficient sortie turnaround played a decisive role in Israel’s victory in the Six-Day War.

Forget the very impressive damage; it is sort of impossible to stop. It’s not one weapon, it’s 6, which can all change trajectory en route to impact.

I’m always skeptical of Pepe and his ‘insider’ knowledge. He always looks for excuses, he was dead wrong on Syria. Even if ‘true’ what is the purpose of putting out full disclosure on Iran’s, Russia’s abilities, in a state of war, you would want absolute fog of war. That is why I don’t believe all the news coming out, as most
are funnelled by Israel and the West who have full capacity to control the narrative until facts start to disprove their lies.

—❗️🇮🇷 ☢️ BREAKING: On Monday, the Iranian parliament will vote on two important matters: Leaving the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and imposing ‘transit restrictions’ on the Strait of Hormuz
Conservative MPs are expected to argue in favour of both proposals, but it is not known whether the vote will pass.
@Middle_East_Spectator

I think Iran is seriously considering the nuclear weapons path.
According to my proposal (post 30), they would escalate to that point by carefully backing out of all the nuclear agreements currently holding them back until they could test a nuke in good conscience:
1. Announce that if israel doesn’t stop all attacks on Iran, Iran will withdraw from the npt.
2. Withdraw from the JCPOA.
3. Withdraw from the Additional Voluntary safeguards it agreed to as part of the npt.
4. Withdraw from the NPT and expel the IAEA.
5. Revoke the Fatwa
6. Perform an underground test of a nuclear device.
7. Announce the test of a delivery vehicle.
Of course, I don’t know if it will happen in this order, but the timeline would be compressed to a week.

The Zionists probably drank their own Kool-Aid and thought Iran didn’t have the capabilities it’s showing

I agree. There is an interesting history to this, and while there’s a saying to the effect of “never underestimate your enemy”, this happens all the time on the Western side:
1. The Nazi attack on Germany. From Hitler’s Finland recordings we know that Berlin completely underestimated the amount of Soviet tank production.
2. It seems to be a given that Russia’s strategic depth (=its size put to use) is underestimated. One could argue that Washington 2022 was a bit smarter because their main plan was to choke Russia’s economy through the “sanctions from hell”. This time, they underestimated Russian preparedness and the resilience of its economy. So you could say the West overestimated its own economic clout. As the outcome of the sanctions was a random event, it made sense that the US tried it–IMO Moscow was surprised how well their country managed.
3. The rational behaviour, e.g. of Iran against Israel’s repeated terrorist attacks seems to have been confused with weakness. Similar on other fronts. There may be a psychological effect here because Western leaders cannot think in this (more longterm) mode any more but I refuse to accept that all Western experts are as brainwashed. Their papers, as in RAND or “Path to Persia” mention risks and downsides in a way that makes sense to me.
By systematic underestimation of the enemy, I don’t refer to the USA starting wars they don’t bother to win (Iraq, Afghanistan, Libyia, Syria). This policy is inhuman but a strategy, the “forever wars”.
By contrast, the Eastern side does not seem to underestimate the enemy as much: The Surovikin defence line against the 2023 Ukrainian counterattack was way deeper than needed. On a larger scale, the same happened when the Red Army prepared the Battle of Kursk. Iran has patiently waited despite being badly exposed for a long time. They announced that now they’re ready for a long war and I trust them.
I don’t accept that Western decisions are driven by stupidity (although I believe that many of the Western politicians/experts we see in TV/newspapers are chosen and groomed for characteristics that exclude actual intelligence) and I suggest to always search for a rationale. The systematic underestimation of the main enemy I can only explain through desperation: the trends are negative, and while chances to e.g. win decisively are bad now, they may still be > 0% but will only go down with time. So it makes sense to try something now. There’s the added effect that some war-like operations have been planned thoroughly (such as the attack on Iran) and their result isn’t fully known in advance — it is not irrational to try and see how it goes.

Thanks for your reply. An unasked Q so far is Has Iranian AF been tasked with AD and if so what success has it had? Plus, as others have noted, Iran is a large nation with much of its assets dispersed, not tightly concentrated like Occupied Palestine, and that too gives Iran a natural advantage–and not just against the Zionists. Iran still has land and sea lines of communication open and isn’t dependent on a very long logistical chain. With Zionist ports and airfields kaput, it becomes an island unless Jordan, Egypt and Syria help. I don’t see Lebanon giving any help. As I recall, the Zionists depend on imports of food; they’re incapable of feeding themselves. Yes, Palestinians will also suffer. I do wonder if Iran is targeting known settler enclaves as all of them are combatants.
As with Ukraine, IMO the Dark Side didn’t think this through very well.
