Ukraine Negotiations Still Hover Around Its Root Cause

The most important sentence from President Trump about yesterday's phone call between President Putin and him is this:

Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a Ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War. The conditions for that will be negotiated between the two parties, as it can only be, because they know details of a negotiation that nobody else would be aware of.

The most important sentence by President Putin about yesterday's phone call is this:

Notably, Russia’s position is clear. Eliminating the root causes of this crisis is what matters most to us.

Russia will not fall for ending the war without having achieved its main goal.

Western media, here the NY Times, continue to play dumb (archived) about what the Russia's main goal is:

[Putin] repeated his mantra that a peace deal needs to “remove the root causes of this crisis,” referring to Russia’s pursuit of wide-ranging influence over Ukraine.

David Ignatius, a CIA spokesperson at the Washington Post, makes a similar (archived) nonsensical claim:

He still wants victory, which he described once again after Monday’s call with the phrase “eliminate the root causes of the crisis.” That’s code for his conviction that Ukraine cannot be a European country, as it wants, but must remain under Russian hegemony.

Russia as well as Ukraine are European countries. Russia has no interest in having 'hegemony' or 'wide-ranking influence' over Ukraine. Its interest is the defense of the Russian Federation. It had to prevent Ukraine from becoming a U.S. (NATO) spear tip aimed at its heart.

A different NY Times piece about the Russian northern defenses build up after Finland joined NATO is far more correct when it states (archived):

From Moscow’s perspective, the Russians need to bolster their defenses to protect themselves from NATO expansion, which has always been a sore subject. The Baltic nations were the first members of the former Soviet Union to join NATO, bringing large stretches of Russia’s border up against NATO’s. The prospect of Ukraine, an even bigger former Soviet republic, following suit was so threatening to Moscow that it became one of the causes of the most devastating land war in generations.

It is NATO expansion, not Ukraine the country, that is the root cause of the war. It is NATO expansion that has to be eliminated.

The U.S. and its European allies are still in denial of that. To ignore that the U.S. has, for over 30 years, been driving the NATO expansion that led to the war, allows Trump to play a 'mediator' in war in which the U.S. is a dominant participant.

It is stupid for western media to accept Trump's claim (archived) of such a role:

After phone calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump posted that “Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a Ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War”.

In remarks that indicated that Washington may be stepping back from a role as a mediator, Trump said the “conditions” for a deal could only be agreed by the warring parties “because they know details of a negotiation that nobody else would be aware of”.

Trump also said that immediately after his call with Putin, he recounted the conversation to Zelenskyy together with the leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Finland and the European Commission.  (1)

But two people briefed on the call with the European leaders said Trump was clear that he would pull the US back from engaging with the conflict and leave Ukraine and Russia to directly negotiate a ceasefire. He also made no promise of future US sanctions against Russia should Putin refuse any peace attempts. One person familiar with the conversation said the leaders were stunned by the US president’s description of what was agreed. They added it was clear Trump was “not ready to put greater pressure” on Putin to come to the negotiating table in earnest.

Trump is pretending to wash his hands (archived) over Ukraine:

The US desire to disengage has been flagged for weeks, by Trump himself but also by secretary of state Marco Rubio and vice-president JD Vance, who have repeatedly expressed frustration with Russia and Ukraine in equal measure. Vance told reporters on Monday that the US might ultimately have to say: “This is not our war.”

The U.S. can not be a mediator in a war, or wash its hands over it, when it continues to supply weapons and the all important field intelligence and communication means needed to wage it. Only yesterday the U.S. allowed Australia to send (old) U.S. made tanks to Ukraine.

Trump's claims of disengaging from the war has yet to be confirmed by any evidence that he is really going to do so.

The only thing Trump did reject so far was to join the European attempts to escalate the war by inserting their own troops into it.

Having learned from the economic disaster his tariffs have caused Trump also rejected plans to impose secondary sanctions in form of 500% tariffs on anyone who continues to buy oil from Russia.

Aside from that Trump has kept support for the war on the same level as before and only refrained from expanding it.

That he is, for now, leaving the negotiations to Russia and Ukraine, is an admission that he has failed to keep his election promise of making peace.

The U.S. will have to reengage in negotiations if peace is to be achieved. It is U.S. (NATO) expansionism that has cause the war.

Russia needs to remove the root cause, U.S. (NATO) expansionism, to achieve peace.

A complete victory in Ukraine is a necessary but not yet sufficient condition for that.

But chances are good that the further disagreements over the defeat of Ukraine will rip NATO apart.

That might be the victory President Putin has on his mind.

(1) The FT claims that: "[Trump] recounted the conversation to Zelenskyy together with the leaders of Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Finland and the European Commission.

But Trump's statement does not mention Britain at all: "I have so informed President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, of Ukraine, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, President Emmanuel Macron, of France, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, of Italy, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, of Germany, and President Alexander Stubb, of Finland, during a call with me, immediately after the call with President Putin."

It seems like, despite the FT's claim, Prime Minister Starmer was left out in the cold on this.

Just one more flight before Trump pulls out! This time for real, I am sure of it. It is those pesky neocons who keep him involved in not his war. Trump can’t do anything. Meanwhile omnipotent Russia is busy smuggling fentanyl into the US.

FBI Director Kash Patel says the flow of fentanyl into the United States is coming from his country’s northern neighbour. He says China, Russia, and Iran are partnering with cartels to smuggle the drug into the United States via Vancouver.

Like the delusions you entertain about actual Russian military capabilities, based on a three year plus conflict against a Western proxy supplied with hand-me-downs and ex-Soviet kit.
What an embarassing little toad the twerp Milites falls under the tag of. Idiot.
the body armours, even down to the shoes and socks, HIMARS,MANPAD’s, ( quite sophisticated) mines, the database systems, rifles, machine guns, Artillery shells, drones, tanks, APC’s, landmine detectors, Patriots, IRIS-T,RADAR’s,consoles/controllers and so on and so on are not “hand me downs” you stupid prick. They are the very same NATO weapons, equipment and munitions tallied with the same very, very expensive and extensive ISR abilities from the same personnel that NATO would use, because Ukiestan is defacto a NATO military. Much of the Soviet artillery when integrated with western systems is a very lethal set of weapons.
More advanced aircraft isn’t supplied because of the expense and embarassment against Russian AD they would face.
Russia fights the way it fights because it has no other options that allow it a similar level of success, doctrine is not driven my choice, but by the capabilities and limitations of the force using it.
Russia could fight with alot more personel using alot more weapons in alot more areas. There are no “limitations” driving the doctrine against Ukraine. Limiting the scope of the war to avoid direct confrontation with NATO, all the while building up and fine-tuning the military to be capable of taking on NATO in full conflict simultaneously are the reasons the doctrine is what it is you twerp
Where did MoA blog find this twerp?
And the “3 years” war is because Russia is having to kill an unlimited supply of ukiestanis supplied with an infinite amount of money while not having the economy anywhere close to a WW2 war economy of the US or USSR in the 1940’s

This is the water-cooler thread now 😛
Anyone mentioning cucumber sandwiches in 2025 is almost certainly aiming for at least a mild comedic effect. I suspect the comment was written by someone very English 🙂
Yet no obligatory mention of spotted dick? The English still eat a lot of spotted dick. A lot.
What was it called again? Tiffin? That is the meal at which one would most likely encounter the purportedly maligned cucumbers; very delicate small white bread rectangular sandwiches, the butter is possibly the key and has to be balanced in relation to the thin slices of cucumber.
This kind of English culture is now more easily found across Asia than in Britain, mostly India and Hong Kong. I never heard of Tiffin in Singapore but might have have had a cucumber sandwich or four (could be a false memory, if real it tasted perfectly fine).
Any kind of meal that really wants to bring out the subtle taste of cucumber has to be delicate 🙂
Pip-pip old boy, get back to us when you have discovered the “bread on toast” sandwich —that’s some major arcana 😀

_______
Spotted Dick, like Cock-a-Leekie, is still easily curable with a short regimen of antibiotics. Untreated Spotted Dick can lead, however, to the brain rot so characteristic of English elites.

There is only one root cause: RUSSIA! This third-class Nazi shithole must be dismantled & the resisting parts be obliterated to regain peace in Europe ever again!!!

“Western logic”:
Russia is nazi thus we must complete the nazi attack on Russia that was interrupted in 1945.
Such bullshit.
There is no more depth to it than that —only endlessly verbose lies— yet “everybody” agrees 100% (according to the nazis).
No thank you, no sale. Difficult to enjoy living under “nazi cocaine clowns” rule. Would flee if I had the energy and anything to offer anybody. Since I can’t I will continue my meager resistance. I know I am not alone.

I feel that Archive.org seriously needs a backup or more for redundancy; even if for now it’s working.
Sometimes book contents are edited in reprints. The spicy tale of Stuka Pilot Rudel meeting Hitler and learning about the development of the atomic bomb which would reverse things for Germany is such an example. It’s fully written out in the english translation, ominously hinted at in the first German print, and completely absent in the second.
My colleague who dug so deeply into Manichaeism that he was learning all the old languages has found a number of deeply suspicious problems of the translations. Sometimes a single, well-picked phrase renders the full meaning inverted, and then as if guided by hands, just this bit of text rises to prominence where it serves to turn people away from the subject. One example is how a sinner is to be treated: chide them, says Mani (dt. schelten). Torture them, says the translation.
I wonder if Orwell is more than merely prescient with his descriptions. There is this nasty tale [don your alu caps, please) that his brother worked for the British services in a department where future population control was planned …

According to Reuters, Kiev is proposing to confiscate assets from individuals under EU sanctions and hand them over to Ukraine. Those affected by such measures could then demand compensation from Russia.
Ukraine has no rule of law so assumes the rest of the world behaves like they do. They think the world is one big pig pen. 😂
@Slavyangrad
‘If Europe and the US support us, we can continue to fight Russia’ – Goncharenko ready to kill off more Ukrainians.
You said that blood is being shed on the front lines. What will you do next, Alexey?
Ukraine will continue to fight. It will fight.
How?
We are ready. We have no other choice.
In terms of resources, how will you continue the fight?
Fortunately, we currently produce almost half of the necessary weapons ourselves. If Europe continues to support us, if America continues to share intelligence and at least sell us some weapons, we will be able to continue fighting. Europe must increase military production and supply weapons to Ukraine. Without this, things will be extremely difficult for us.

❗️Documents on the transfer of wealth in Western Ukraine have been leaked online. In Ukraine, asses have flared up furiously around the leak of documents from the State Forestry Agency to the press – on the transfer of control over the natural resources of the western regions to the United States and Great Britain, as well as the destruction of resources in territories that could come under Russian control.
🔴The first was a publication (quickly deleted) on the Korrespondent.net website, quite a Ukrainian-conservative focus. The scans show: the documents have not yet been signed, but their credibility is beyond doubt against the backdrop of the deals concluded by the Zelensky regime with Washington and London.
🔴Now the “citizens” are worried: will Ukraine become a bargaining chip in the global game for resources against the backdrop of an approaching truce or even a possible division of the country into spheres of influence between Moscow, Washington and, perhaps, some third force.
🔴Ukraine, which has significant reserves of agricultural land, forests, minerals and transport corridors, has long been in the focus of global players. The leaks in question point to two parallel processes:
🔴Western investment in exchange for sovereignty – the transfer of rights to exploit forests and lands in western regions (for example, Lvov or Ivano-Frankovsk regions) to American and British companies through concessions or long-term enslaving contracts.
🔴The “scorched earth” tactic is the destruction of infrastructure and natural resources in the eastern and southern regions, which, according to some forecasts, may become the subject of territorial concessions by Kiev in the event of a peace agreement with Russia.
🔴The interest in Ukrainian resources on the part of the US and the EU has long been the talk of the town. Even before the war, Ukraine was seen as a breadbasket and a supplier of “green” energy for Europe (to sow farmland with rapeseed as a raw material for biodiesel). Current accusations of hidden privatization are heard against the backdrop of Ukraine’s growing debt and its dependence on foreign aid.
🔴The destruction of resources in regions coming under Russian control may be an attempt to deprive Moscow of the economic benefits of acquisitions, which is reminiscent of the tactics of a number of states during World War II or the attempt of the Dutch Gueuzes to flood the land so as not to give it up to Spanish rule. Such actions are contrary to international law and can aggravate the humanitarian crisis, but when have these conventions ever stopped the ruling Bandar-logs and their masters?
🔴There is also China and other players: Beijing remains in the shadows for now, but its role may increase if the negotiations reach a dead end. In the 2010s, China invested considerable funds in Ukrainian farmland, although the money was “developed” by the Ukrainian side, to put it mildly, inappropriately.
🔴Predictions about the division of Ukraine have been circulating since 2014, but today they are fueled by statements from an entire army of analysts that the West, tired of war, may persuade Kiev to territorial compromises.
🔴It is too early to talk about dividing the hide of the half-dead Ukraine. Leaks can be both an element of disinformation and a “leak” of the real plans of individual officials. But the very fact of such discussions points to a key problem: Ukraine faces the risk of not only territorial losses, but also the loss of control over the remnants of its own sovereignty.
🔴To avoid this, clear international guarantees and mechanisms are needed to prevent the country from becoming a field for “deals” without taking into account the will of the people. As one of the few sober voices, Ukrainian economist Oleksiy Kushch, says: “Resources should work to restore Ukraine, and not to enrich global players.”
🔴The question remains: whose scenario will prevail – geopolitical bargaining or the will of Ukraine itself? The answer is probably more than obvious.

What no one will say:
First, Ukraine has the worst government on planet earth because no other government has the total extinction of its people as its goal. Thus, ‘to the last Ukrainian” or “to the last drop of blood”. No, not even North Korea is this bad. Nor is it simply hyperbole because of Ukraine’s extremely negative demographics.
Second, the average UKR male would be far better off under Russian rule because they probably wouldn’t be dead – especially after being caught, beaten and shoved into a van.
Third, German and Japanese people are vastly better off today – after losing WWII – than in their entire history. Thus, it is entirely realistic to think that Ukraine might flourish under Russian rule – if they are forced to build an economy instead of endless war.
Finally, new sophisticated non aggression treaties could work better than at any time in human history – because of technology. Drones, satellites, remote sensors, and the internet. The former Soviet Union was content with Finland, Sweden and Austria being neutral states for many years.

Alex Krainer has a more optimistic take on Trump on Dialogue Works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6J5TgPFFeY
He contends that Trump is confronted with very powerful Zionists, mercenaries and Bank of London bloodlusts which limits his capacity to make positive change. TTrump’s apparent schizophrania is more of a tactic to deflect the relentless condemenation that would occur if he had one sided positions of peace with Russia.Putin and Xi are well aware of his limitations and work cooperatively with him. While Krainer’s views might be naive, they are still reasoned and plausible. Lets face it, however virtuous we maybe, if any of us were actually elected President, we would be confronted with the same forces that would kill us and and our family if we ever stepped out of line and might react differntly under that calculus then we do on an unaccountable blog.

Firstly, perhaps stop looking at the situation in Yemen through a purely mil/tech lens, strategic operations are simply extensions of politics, the hardware’s technical capabilities are usually operational significant (though new systems blur the operational/strategic boundary c.f. Himars).
Returning to Yemen, one possible scenario, that might explain the removal of the CSG, was a dawning realisation that the administration was being set up for a ‘Gulf of Tonkin’ scenario with Houthi SRBM’s playing the role of PT boats. Once a carrier had been struck, the media, I’d wager, would be prepped to distribute intel that Iranian technicians had fired the missile and Trump would be stampeded into another DS sponsored war, that perhaps would be engineered for him to loose.
Don’t forget the CVN-75 (Truman) has been shockingly commanded, losing F-18’s, crashing into merchant ships, what better target for a lucky strike to occur, than a vessel with a DEI inflicted crew of incompetents. Similarly the Houthis have repurposed Iranian AAM’s as their primary AD, so why was an F-35 anywhere close to its MEZ? Again shades of Vietnam, and artificial prompts for war with Iran. The Hill, hardly a bastion of the Trump Administration, agrees with this reading, saying they ‘dodged a bullet’ and played it safe, whilst Trump publicly let it be known that he wanted to negotiate with the Iranians. Coincidentally, shortly after Trump announced that the US and Iran were close to a deal, Comey posted his infamous 8647 Tweet (subtle they ain’t).
As for myths of supremacy, they weren’t/aren’t as the Russians themselves acknowledged, with their, ‘better is the enemy of good enough’ and ‘quantity has a quality of its own’ maxims. Even their CoFM’s tables suggest their best MBT’s are 2/3rds the the CE of the West’s, and senior military personnel publicly acknowledged that their AFV’s were designed to last hours, when queried about the short lifetimes of their critical components. I certainly know that having been in both sides models that the Russian design all too often sacrificed ergonomics and effectiveness for offensive capability (limited elevation/depression of main armament for example, or cramped driver’s positions and crude transmissions). Again this is all in the purely technical sphere, operationally and strategically it’s probably a far closer contest, for example the IDF quickly realised that the Soviet OAW was superior in many ways to its Western counter-part, leading to its stunning success in ‘67, and recovery in ‘73.
Ditto aircraft, Russian on-paper capabilities never lived up to real-world performance, where constant failures in QC and inferior technologies often robbed them of their potential, created by brilliant designers. Modern Russian iterations of the CW classics are much improved, but given they are still restricted to using inferior electronic components why would they suddenly leapfrog over the historically superior Western designs, especially regarding radars, engines, FCS and missiles. Unless you believe in an innate Slavic superiority, in which case you’re little better than the idiots who’ve historically peddled that type of supremacist crap.
Your comment about your ‘journey of discovery’ is the exact opposite to mine. Being a lefty I believed that Russian kit was as good if not superior to Western models, then my journey began, often guided by people who’d experienced both design approaches, often in combat, and leading me to draw the conclusions I do today.
Finally, having been on both sides of the wall, quite literally, it seems that lefties have to believe that every aspect of their society, or approach to creating one, is superior, so naturally that belief extends into the field of warfare. It’s as though repeating the ludicrous mantra that the T-X or AK-Y, or Su-Z is/was the best, is proof that the society that built them, and that they support, is better by a sort of technological osmosis, and to say otherwise is a form of treason; whereas, those on the opposite political spectrum seem to take a far more balanced view, happy to criticise their equipment, and even regurgitating some of the Left’s favourite military myths, like the T-34 was superior to the M4, always a good one, or the US was defeated in Vietnam by people in black pyjamas. Attitudes that were seemingly abhorrent to the left, even though I secretly harboured a suspicion that most of the historical Russian kit was inferior to its Western counterparts, hence my intolerance to that suggestion.
We haven’t even got onto the topics of communications, training and tactical doctrine, which traditionally have cemented Western military superiority, though the latter aspects are getting a rude wake-up call, again an event that has historical precedence during times of conflict.
I’ll do AD next time, another fascinating clash of attitudes, driven by differing wartime experiences and socio-techno military factors.

Given Trump’s leading this second phase of the DS takedown strategy, it goes without saying. As I’ve said on many occasions, everything that this Administration does or says has to be seen through the lens of the internal, counter-revolutionary battle they are waging against the DS. They are trying to cut it off, cut it up and then kill it, Ukraine is just one aspect of this ongoing operation, hence the now near-constant auto-pen references, which allows the net to be cast very wide.

Why is NATO pushing eastward? What’s the main objective? To break up Russia and encircle China?
Russia is the largest nation-state in the world with around 11% of the earth’s land mass. It is 70% larger than the US with less than half the population. Russia’s the big piñata!
Trump is squeezed between Russia’s inflexible demands and the $ interests in Ukraine (and eventually Russia).
I’d like to hear more about who the $ interests are and what investments are at risk.
The Rand Corporation, the Pentagon’s think tank, had issued a report in 2019 about how to go about breaking up the Russian Federation and installing leaders who would be more agreeable to doing “business” with them.
This woman does go into the whos and whys in Ukraine but we need to zoom out to get the bigger picture.
