Moon of Alabama Brecht quote
May 16, 2025
Ukraine – Negotiation Failure Plus Other Items

After some diplomatic gyrations, talks between the Russian Federation and Ukraine took place today in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Russian side had sent largely same delegation which had negotiated with Ukraine in March and April 2022. It sees the current negotiations as a continuation of the older ones, provided that new facts on the ground are taken into account.

The Ukrainian delegation was headed by its Minister of Defense Rustem Umerov. Its task was to demand an immediate ceasefire and to prepare a meeting between the presidents of the two countries.

The talks ended after just two hours.

The Russian side is said to have demanded a Ukrainian retreat from the four oblast the Russians have largely conquered and integrated into their country.

The Ukrainian side demanded an immediate ceasefire, the return of children the Russians had removed from the areas involved in military operations and the exchange of all prisoners (of which Russia has many more than Ukraine). It is obvious that Ukrainian side is not interested (yet) in making peace.

Both sides rejected the other side's demands and that was it. For now …

The balance of power in the war is clearly on the Russian side. The Ukrainian army will thus continue to bleed and lose on the battlefield.

Another exchange of dead soldiers also occurred today. Thirty four corpse of Russia soldiers were exchanged against 909 Ukrainian ones. The rather absurd relation of 1 to 27 has been the case for quite a while. Indeed it seems that Russian side has limited the number of Ukrainian corpses it is willing to release per exchange to 909.

bigger

There are three reasons that contribute to the strong divergence of the numbers of dead on each side.

  • For the Ukrainian side the evacuation of dead (and wounded) soldiers is not a priority.
  • The Russian side is moving forwards winning control of areas that the Ukrainian side has lost. This allows to collect all dead while not being under fire.
  • The Ukrainian losses are in general much higher than the Russian ones.

Lieutenant-General Andrey Mordvichev, who the Ukrainians had claimed to have killed on March 19 2022, has become the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Ground Forces in the rank of a Colonel-General.

The Ukrainian government 'lost' over $700 million buying arms and munitions which were never delivered or unusable.

How Ukraine lost hundreds of millions on arms deals gone wrong (archived) – Financial Times, May 16 2025
Desperate to source munitions, Kyiv paid foreign brokers for weapons and shells that were sometimes unusable or never arrived

A Financial Times investigation, based on leaked Ukrainian state documents, court filings and dozens of interviews with procurement officials, weapons dealers and manufacturers, and detectives, has uncovered how hundreds of millions of dollars Kyiv paid to foreign arms intermediaries to secure vital military equipment has gone to waste over the past three years of war.

To date, Ukraine has paid out $770mn in advance to foreign arms brokers for weapons and ammunition that have not been delivered, according to figures from Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence, as well as documents seen by the FT.

Most the deals have (presumably) involved large bribes.

I like how you have just contradicted yourself in your last two post. As per usual.

Your mental illness means you don’t even recognise what you just did.

Spasibo.
I asked a Russian friend about it some time ago and she told me ONE ‘s’.
I also asked Deepseek and it gave me the following:

The spelling of “Donbas” in Russian using the Cyrillic alphabet is:
Донбас
(It is pronounced “Donbass” in English, but the correct Russian spelling is Донбас with a single “с” at the end.)
Additional Note:
The full name “Donets Basin” translates to Донецкий бассейн (Donetskiy basseyn), from which the shortened form Донбас (Donbas) is derived.

So you are right of course on the origin coming from бассейн as in DONetsk BASin but it seems other Russians and this Chinese AI think it should be with one ‘c’ as in shortening the original бассейн when making the contraction. Maybe both are correct when transliterated?

You haven’t won 1 economics debate on here. You are an expert at juggling fruit. Talking shite.
So why don’t you fuck off back to zero hedge with all the other gold bugs. Your sound money fantasies. Instead of telling everyone else to leave b’s bar.
When it comes to money and banking you are a travelling circus. You even thought banks used fractional reserve banking like the old fixed exchange rate days. That’s how big a fucking moron you are.
Did you apologise for being so fucking stupid ??
Like fuck you did. As per usual you act as if it didn’t even happen or say it. A complete clown show that suffers from several mental disorders.
The truth ( free from your mental illness )
Gold Can Be Volatile And Subject To Market Forces, Gold May Not Always Perform Well During Economic Uncertainty, Gold Should Be Used As A Diversification Tool, Not A Sole Investment.
A gilt held to redemption will guarantee what you’ll get back. Just like any FIXED interest rate account.
So a 1 year gilt which is the most common gilt sold by NS&I is far more safe than holding gold over a year. As history shows gold is very volatile.
Which is of course why people choose gilts over gold to offset risk. They
Many people have bought gold for a year and lost a lot of money. NOBODY on planet earth has bought a gilt for a year and lost money.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
But you are way too stupid to realise it.

And looking at those figures of government debt to GDP you can see why Fritz just revoked constitutional limits on government indebtness, using political chicanery rarely seen in Germany but becoming more and more common.
Also Australia, why so little debt?
Germany and Austalia, as well as a few others, have latitude and therefore are in line to ‘volunteer’ in giving America better chances of a softer landing by buying American treasuries in the near- mid-term, when no one else would, hehehe.

And what’s your point caller ?
In what context ?
As it’s a measure of savings.
You don’t have a point and you certainly don’t understand the context. Because you are a travelling circus canuck.
We were all having a lovely fireside chat at the bar trying to figure out why Russians have such low savings in Russian bonds.
Until you came along with your usual gold standard, fixed income exchange rate type bullshit.
Go on you clown keep digging ….
In December The US stock market was 63% of global market cap, up from 60.5% at the beginning of the year. The next biggest market is…Japan at 5.6%.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Now does that explain why $36 trillion treasuries are held by
Households , businesses and foreigners ??
Is all those savings held by Households , businesses and foreigners a sign of true wealth. After all it is good to save isn’t it ?
Go on put it altogether canuck tell a story filled with real context instead of using gold standard, fixed exchange rate type bullshit.
When comparing Japan and Russia in normal times can you explain why Japan with its 250% debt to GDP has ultra low unemployment rates and inflation rates.
Compare with Russia who has 19% of debt to GDP with unemployment rates between 5-6% and high inflation rates.
Can you explain it using context rather than just being a travelling circus pointing at a debt number ??
I mean you are so stupid you are making a point that the country with the lowest debt to GDP number out performs a country with a higher debt to GDP number. Yet as I have just shown you are talking complete and utter bollox.
Now jog on to chat GPT to see if it can save you again.

Reply to Sun of Alabama – A Goldman’s Verse
You mock the goldman’s path with bitter jeers,
Yet shun the truths that’s echoed through the years.
You claim that gilts are safest in the land,
While markets burn and slip through grasping hands.
You scorn the Canuck’s wealth with foul disdain,
But gains from gold put bondsmen’s yields to shame.
Since aught-two, bonds have bled through thick and thin,
Down forty percent—how’s that a “win”?
I hold the bullion, stocks, and earthy ground—
My gold has soared while yours sank underground.
You hurl your words like drunken darts at night,
Yet miss the mark, though aim with all your might.
If such delusions still enthrall your mind,
Seek help—a therapist of patient kind.
For clinging to your gilts with dogged pride,
Suggests a deeper fracture deep inside.
or on a more humourous note:
The Gilted Fool – A Light-Hearted Lashing
To Sun of Alabama, with all due irreverence
Oh Sun of Bama, shining rather dim,
Proclaiming gilts while prospects look quite grim.
You sneer at gold, and call the Canuck names,
While markets torch your bonds in smoky flames.
“You’re mad!” you cry, “you need a doc, not gold!”
Yet you’ve been fleeced, while I’ve been paid in fold.
You tout those gilts like they’re a royal prize,
But safest asset? Mate, that’s bold… and lies.
Since aught-two, bonds have done a backward flip—
A fiscal faceplant, not a money trip.
My gold? It shines like Midas took a bow.
Your gilts? They’re worth about as much as cow.
You rage online like it’s a therapy,
But swearing doesn’t fix economy.
So call a shrink, perhaps they’ll lend a hand—
And maybe help you finally understand:
That gold’s not just for pirates, kings, or myths—
It’s also for escaping bond-sunk cliffs.

What do you think Canuck ??
Is a country who’s population has a lot of savings better off than a country who’s population has very little savings and has to run to the banks and borrow all the time just to survive ?
What are Russians doing with their roubles after they have paid their taxes after a hard day’s work. ?
The deficit is low ?
The national debt is low ?
With a population of roughly 150 million .
Their Rouble savings held as cash after a hard day’s graft would show up as the government deficit. That’s only 1.7% of GDP.
Their Rouble savings held as GKO’s after a hard day’s graft would show up as the national debt That’s only 16% of GDP.
Are they completely shit at saving money after a hard day’s graft. Or is something else going on ?
Why do you think saving very little is a good thing. When each of us at the bar think that saving some of our hard earned money is a good thing ?
What the fuck have you got against people saving when you point at debt to GDP numbers like a clown ??
Where are Russians saving ?
Why is Russian household debt to GDP rising ?
Private sector debt. The actual debt you should be worried avout.
Why has consumer credit doubled ?
Why aren’t they using their savings to buy stuff anymore?
Why the change ?
I’ll give you a clue ….
They cheered as they shrunk their budget deficit. But it won’t last it will start increasing again to support the credit structure of the Russian economy. As George Osborne found out as he tried to run a budget surplus. Had to reverse course.
As Russian exports have fallen by half they have no other choice.

I don’t know much about this but some people would instead
of romanizing Донецкий бассейн to Donetskiy basseyn
romanize it to Donetskij bassejn which to me subjectively
looks and feels much more correct (and helpful).
Maybe just to me though 😀
Because it is a j-sound and not a y-sound isn’t that right?
Also makes sense since j/й is much closer to i/и than y and
anyway y is already taken by ы.
There are similar issues in “standard” romanization of
Japanese. Almost all of it has to so with all the various
forms of English not being spelled in the way it is
pronounced 😀 (and most languages are like that).
Anyway what is the Russian for “poo-flinging competition”?
We all need to know 🙂

Not one fund manager on the planet will say do you want 70% stocks 30% gold savings portfolio. Or 80% gold 20% stocks portfolio or 60% stocks, 40% gold portfolio.
It’s always bonds they use. 70% stocks, 30% bonds, 80% bonds, 20% stocks or 60% stocks, 40% bonds. Etc, etc etc..
For all the reasons explained above and for the last 5 years bull shit that comes out of the fixed exchange rate mouths of gold bugs.

To Sun of Bama, Loud Defender of Decline
Oh Sun of Bama, ever full of cheer,
Proclaims that gilts are safer, year by year.
“A no-brain choice!” he cries with great aplomb—
For those with brains, though his seems slightly gone.
He scorns the Canuck, sharp and full of gold,
Whose gains have made him wealthy, brave, and bold.
While bonds collapse and fiat starts to flail,
The goldman grins; his ship still rides the gale.
Yet still you tout the pound—what sorry fate!
A debt-wracked Sovereign, drowning in its weight.
One hundred one percent? A proud decree!
You trust a state that borrows endlessly.
Gold’s free of claims, no IOUs to bear,
No “full faith” pledge from governments that swear.
It simply is, immune to fraud or whim—
Unlike your bonds, now sinking past the brim.
But still you post, and post, and post some more,
A keyboard knight with spreadsheets by the score.
You haunt the threads with tired, endless bleat—
Oh Sun, could you perhaps… just hit delete?
Or haunt another soul, some distant blog,
And let this place recover from your fog.
OR
Sonnet to the Sun (of Alabama)
Oh Sun of Bama, loud and full of pride,
You hail the pound as safer than pure gold.
While gilts decay and bond returns subside,
You cheer the state, though debt has taken hold.
You mock the Canuck, wiser, calm, and keen,
Whose gold now shines while fiat schemes collapse.
He banks his gains while markets bleed unseen—
You back a Sovereign gasping in relapse.
Gold bears no risk from fools who print and pray,
No counterparty lies behind its weight.
Yet still you post, and drone, and will not stray,
A ghost in forums, shouting down debate.
Kind sir, retire—go haunt some other den.
We’ve heard enough. Please close the tab. Amen.

But there is no such Russian equivalent, really.

Thank you 🙂
With help from internet (mostly Wiktionary) I’m reading it as
“Competition of throwing with poo”.
I think I’ll remember какашка = (childish) “poopy”/turd 😀

Thank you to Skiffer ( May 18 2025 13:45 utc | 449 ) as well!
Wiktionary has four definitions of срач and they all fit :O

“international” code replacement for Cyrillic letters. ]
The page had a link to the word хохлосра́ч meaning:

(vulgar, ethnic slur, offensive) Discussion of a political situation
in Ukraine, or of relationships between Russia and Ukraine.

…somehow we have accidentally ended up back on topic 🙂

In response to Sunny Runny Burger@452,
Heh, yeah. Хохлосрач is a very broad and popular subgenre, that goes well beyond online discussions, as it can also be used to describe physical altercations. Ukrainians notoriously love to сраться, meaning to engage in the creation of срач, and since the term is quite flexible and open-ended, even the SMO can be described as a kind of срач that the Russians are having to wade into. The parallel with a poo-flinging contest isn’t just in the fecal root of the term, but also in the contest, as сраться carries some of the meaning of words like сражаться or драться, meaning fight, compete or even wage war. But, if in the latter case, these activities can be approached with honor, dignity or serve an important purpose, сраться is an inherently ugly spectacle, loud, stupid and devoid of any meaning — intentionally shitting yourself in the hope of annoying someone with the smell. As is typical of human nature, Russians cherish the opportunity to observe срач from afar, basking in the Schadenfreude, at the risk of getting roped into active participation themselves.

That settles it! Double-s for me please.
Well, the Russian friend I asked, she was born in Nikolaiev though now she is Russian, so perhaps she told me the ukrop spelling accidentally.
