Zelenski Has Yet To Eat The Shit Sandwich

“It’s a sh*t sandwich,” a Trump administration official acknowledged.
“But Ukraine is going to have to eat it because [Trump] has made clear this is no longer our problem.”
Axios

The Trump administration is increasing its pressure on Ukraine’s (former) president Zelenski to swallow the shit sandwich. It offered a ‘new’ version of it which turned out to be the same as the old one:

The United States is doubling down on a demand that Ukraine relinquish half of its revenues from natural resources, including minerals, gas and oil, as well as earnings from ports and other infrastructure, according the document, which was reviewed by The New York Times.
…
The document, which was dated Feb. 21, states that the revenues will be directed to a fund in which the United States holds 100 percent financial interest, and that Ukraine should contribute to the fund until it reaches $500 billion — the amount President Trump has demanded from the war-torn country in exchange for American aid. That is more than twice Ukraine’s gross domestic product before the war.

The document does not stipulate that the United States will provide security guarantees for Ukraine in return for access to Ukrainian resources. That key demand from President Volodymyr Zelensky was absent in the first draft agreement presented to him last week, prompting him to decline to sign the deal.

There was even a threat, twice, to withdraw Starlink access from Ukraine’s army should Zelenski reject the steal:

U.S. negotiators pressing Kyiv for access to Ukraine’s critical minerals have raised the possibility of cutting the country’s access to Elon Musk’s vital Starlink satellite internet system, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.
…
The issue was raised again on Thursday during meetings between Keith Kellogg, the U.S. special Ukraine envoy, and Zelenskiy, said one of the sources, who was briefed on the talks.

Without Starlink access it will be much more difficult for the Ukrainian army to control the frontline. Ukraine’s replies to the threat were not diplomatic.

Zelenski has only himself to blame for this.

During last fall he offered his victory plan, largely a list with demands for more support. It was supposed to be rejected as it was. But one detail in the plan was supposed to tickle Trump’s interest:

The plan includes five points: one geopolitical, two military, one economical and one related to national defense and safety.
…
4. Strategic economic potential. Envisages the investment of international partners in the production of critically important natural resources, such as uranium, titanium, lithium and graphite.

In early February Zelenski again pushed that idea:

KYIV, Feb 7 (Reuters) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy pored over a once-classified map of vast deposits of rare earths and other critical minerals during an interview with Reuters on Friday, part of a push to appeal to Donald Trump’s penchant for a deal.

The U.S. president, whose administration is pressing for a rapid end to Ukraine’s war with Russia, said on Monday he wanted Ukraine to supply the U.S. with rare earths and other minerals in return for financially supporting its war effort.

“If we are talking about a deal, then let’s do a deal, we are only for it,” Zelenskiy said, emphasising Ukraine’s need for security guarantees from its allies as part of any settlement.

But there are in fact no big rare earth deposits in Ukraine which are economically retrievable. All licenses for those minerals which can be recovered at a profit have already been sold.

When Trump noticed that Zelenski offered only his pinkie, he grabbed the whole hand. Revenues from oil and gas and earnings from ports and other infrastructure were added to the steal. Zelenski had set a trap and got caught in it (edited machine translation):

People’s Deputy Goncharenko said that the very idea of this deal on deposits belongs to Zelensky, who decided to offer the Americans something that Ukraine does not have, and now he does not know how to get out of this story.

“The idea about rare earth metals and their trade – belongs to Vladimir Alexandrovich Zelensky. In America, there was no such talk at all! It was our brilliant minds that came up with this idea that they would sell it to Donald Trump and he would come and say ‘okay’.

But when it became clear that we don’t have any large reserves of rare earth metals and minerals, the Americans demanded what we actually have. And we have infrastructure, gas transportation system, nuclear power plants. And here Vladimir Alexandrovich began to set conditions.

But why should we have started it in the first place? We initially received these funds from the United States for nothing. And for that we should have been grateful. We should not have talked about trillions of minerals that we don’t have. It was a lie.

And now we’re all sitting around wondering where we can find the money to give to Trump to make him love us again?

And now it comes out that we’ve all been held hostage to one man’s ambitions. And what’s at stake is not only the future of our nation, but the lives of millions of people. And all this because he was told about the 4% rating. This is tinny,” writes Goncharenko.

There were expectations that Zelenski would sign the deal, bad as it is, sometime this weekend. But it seems that he has decided to drag this out (machine translation):

The deal between Ukraine and the United States on minerals is unlikely to be signed this weekend, as previously assumed by the American media .

This follows from the statement of the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk to the Japanese NHK TV channel.
…
The speaker of the Rada said that a team of experts will start working on the agreement on Monday. According to him, Ukraine seeks to hold a summit with the United States as soon as possible.

Meanwhile the White House has added a new point of contention to its relations with Ukraine:

The Trump administration has asked Ukraine to withdraw an annual [United Nations] resolution condemning Russia’s war, and wants to replace it with a toned-down U.S. statement that was perceived as being close to pro-Russian in Kyiv, according to an official and three European diplomats familiar with the plan, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive political situation between nations that have typically acted as partners.

The suggestion stunned Kyiv, which refused to withdraw its resolution, which is set to be released on the three-year anniversary of Russia’s full-scale anniversary on Monday.

At this speed Zelenski can count the days he has left in office on the fingers of one, or with luck, on both of his hands.

Too bad. There was a time I had some hopes for this Pope — he surely seemed an improvement over poor Benedict. Then he had to insult the patriarch, carried away with warmongering enthusiasm, obscenely warning his spiritual better against looking like “Putin’s altar-boy.” Terrifically terrible words which will die with this bloated, bitter man; sealing his awful legacy.

One contributor above mentionned that the Europeans could say “f*ck you” to Trump, strike a deal with Putin directly, make amends for past mistakes and get out of the role Trump is attempting to shove down their throats. Not going to happen, for sure. But would make strategic sense.
What other scenarios could flip the table?
* Zelensky expelling the NATO troops and experts, saying “f*ck Trump and the Europeans” and suing for peace with Russia directly. Yes, I know, won’t happen, the man doesn’t have the guts. Ukraine would probably get better terms than if everything happens over their heads. It would probably erupt into civil war, but the Russians would be the ones more or less left with the hot potatoe.
* Zelensky deserting his country and fleeing to Moscou. Forget France, he’d be swiftly assassinated by Azov and the Brits. In Russia, he’d probably be reasonably safe, and most likely has a few bargaining chips he can use with the Russians. Ukraine would be left in institutional limbo. And the Russians would de facto have to sort it out.
* Zelensky spilling the beans on Biden and the Europeans. He must have known so much, to manipulate them so well. Burisma, Hunter, Joe, kickbacks… What does he have on Macron? On the Brits? On Ursula von der Lugen? All those hard facts he could spill. – Ok, not going to happen either. But it would be so much fun to watch. And, he’d regain the initiative, become an instant folk hero “the man who robbed 300 billion from the USA“. And possibly even endear himself to Trump.
* Somebody (Orban, Fico, …) spilling the beans on Azov, the Ukrainian nazis… Who has been funding them? Nuturing them? Giving them such a sway? That’s not an easy thing to do, because you have to take these guys weapons eventually. But it’s in everybody’s objective interest. Ukraine, Russia, Europe if it wants to prevent these guys from looking for retribution to the west of Ukraine.
I can’t think of other scenario right now. But there must be at least three more. So, let’s get thinking!

Earlier I read something by Zhao DaShuai which now also showed up in the WSJ. It boils down to Trump doing a reverse Nixon or trying to drive a wedge between Russia and China by sucking up to Russia. The consensus is that it won’t work because at the time the Soviet Union and China were quite hostile toward each other while in the current situation they are strategically intertwined.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the United States’ shift towards Russia aims to create a rift between Moscow and Beijing, yet it risks dividing the West itself.
Trump’s approach to improving relations with Putin is characterized by a “strategic desire to create a divide between Moscow and Beijing.”

If Trump wants revenge on his domestic political enemies he’ll go after them in the same ticky-tack lawfare way they went after him.

Why bother with all that ‘law’ stuff?
Precedence has already been set with executive orders allowing Americans to be Drone Killed on orders of the President. Obama paved that road.
Declare them all ‘terrorists’ and ‘enemies of the state’ (pretty much true) by decree, then splat them all with missiles/drones. The families and any survivors can try to work their way through the corrupt courts like the rest of the ‘mundanes’ that the US kills. It is not like any of the executive is ever held accountable, for anything.
It is my long held wish that the political class starts whacking each other, instead of the innocent people of the world.

Ever fail. If Russia folded, they would have been validated. Their postmodernist stupidity in believing Russians would act this way killed a million men.
Now, the excercise is the unwinding of a mass US population psychosis, which when accomplished will make the end of the killing seem like a good idea. This can happen only one step at a time, like emerging from an addiction. So now we are seeing small steps.
I am hoping for a strong enough recovery that yet unimagined Yalta II type agreements ban all the regime change witchcraft the US media/foreign policy complex has learned how to cast – all in service to their war vampire covens. Yes, if EU wants to retain any relevance whatsoever, they’d do this yesterday:
* Carve up Ukraine, with Poland, Hungary & Romania taking what Russia doesn’t want.
* Reopen & repair Nordstream, make new deals on oil, uranium, etc.
* Normalize relations, remove all sanctions, allow visa-free travel, release all frozen funds.
Of course, we all know Starmer, Macron, Schulz, etc. are stubborn globalist idiots. The AfD, Meloni(?), Le Pen, Orban & Fico might pull it off but somehow Farage has gone off track lately. NATO would be sacrificed of course.
A major AfD victory will certainly make things interesting.

Zelensky cannot sign a deal with the Americans because that stuff is already promised to the Brits.
As several have suspected Trump is waging a shadow war against London.
Meanwhile, Putin has given the order for the Russian military to capture the big ancestral Russian cities without destroying them. Odessa, Dnipro, Karkhiv, etc.
The military will have to accomplish this through encirclement to keep the cities standing.

Trump is simply collecting the cheques that Selensky signed when Biden asked him to.
Puts him in a tough spot, since a) the other creditors, such as the IMF, will not be happy to get nothing when America gets paid in full, ahead of time. Since b) the Europeans will start wondering why they paid most of the bills and get nothing in return, and c) the Ukrainians, who Selensky will have to ask to re-elect him, will be might pissed off when they realize Selensky has given away all the money they urgently need to re-build the country. Especially when IMF and EU will shake their heads and point to America when Ukraine asks for more money.

I’d hesitate to go that far, my point was more immediately about the reconstruction projects in Russian-liberated oblasts being let in rubles, so any Western corporate entity that wanted a piece of the action should be prepared to accept this, and deal with the exchange rate complications and banking sanctions accordingly. They might need to find a counterparty willing to hedge the risk though…
As for @LoveDonbass’s point about the head of the Russian Sovereign Wealth Fund meeting with the US side, it might just be to rub home the point that the Russians actually have a sovereign wealth fund, whereas the US has a Treasury Secretary…
One other point, did the proposals around auditing Fort Knox come up after meeting with the head of the Russian Sovereign Wealth fund?…

Yes, US Imperialists still salivate over China, but they are far too late as their Outlaw Empire is experiencing a steep decline in its ability to confront China. First and foremost, the US military is woefully weak and not anyway near up to the task of confronting China–and what will be used as the reason for any such confrontation?
Posted by: karlof1 | Feb 22 2025 18:59 utc | 52
I agree that the US military is not ready to confront China but would it need to be? So far, the US never fought a war with a (near-)peer adversary. They’ve used various instruments to weaken their adversaries: from using “attack dogs” (allies/vassals), to encouraging internal unrest, to terror etc.
Oh, and it’s not about winning either: it’s enough to weaken China. Just make it look aggressive (e.g. by making it “attack Taiwan” while China is basically just defending its homeland) and then using your influence & allies to pile on shit, starting with sanctions and ending with whatever other hurdles they can come up with.
It’s all just about weakening your adversary, wearing it down. That’s how the Conflict Continuum works:

In 2021, the 40th Chief of Staff of the United States Army identified three dimensions of military competition: 1) narrative, 2) direct (zero-sum), and 3) indirect (non-zero sum) competition.[74] Narrative competition shapes and frames a baseline within which direct, or indirect competition with adversaries are related. In progressive stages of the narrative, allies, partners, neutral parties, observers, and rivals are encouraged to cooperate with the protagonist. Alternatively, adversaries are deterred from military conflict against the protagonist.[74]
If an adversary persists in direct competition, the protagonist simply continues to advance with direct competition, thereby gaining leverage over the adversary. The protagonist might find it possible only to impede the adversary; in this case, allies and partners may interoperate against the adversary for mutual advantage with the protagonist.[74]
If rivals or adversaries persist in indirect competition, the protagonists seek advantage over them by building relationships with cooperating allies, partners, neutral parties, or observers; in addition, the protagonists keep a forward presence in the theater; the protagonists also must keep their capabilities relevant, competitive, and current. Cost becomes a factor, as adversaries learn by simply trying to keep up.[74] Eventually indirect competition could stabilize;[Note 1] however, the 40th Chief of Staff notes competition is an infinite game.[74]

So, to make a really funny but bold example: how about cooperating with Russia, trying to subvert it in so far that there’s enough influence to have “a say” in the next Russian election(s); and then using this new ally as an attack dog against China…
Yes, don’t shoot me now. It’s a crazy example, but these are crazy people and they do plan long term in various ways so a confrontation with China doesn’t have to be war, certainly not war between US & China directly.

Some people don’t seem to understand Trump’s vitriol towards Zelensky. Perhaps some ancient history is in order:
During the reign of Z’s predecessor, Petroshenko, a prosecutor was looking closely into the doings of Burisma, the resource company that was paying Hunter Biden $50,000 a month for his.. expertise. then VP Joe Biden famously got on stage and bragged that he had told Petroshenko to fire the prosecutor, or Biden was going to hold on to $1 billion in US aid, “and in six hours, the son-a-bitch was gone!”.
Never mind that this alone seems to violate a half dozen US laws; it still seemed like it was done specifically to hide Hunter’s activities. So during Trump’s first term, when Z was installed as the new President of Ukraine, Trump, during a phone call, asked Z to look into what happened in the above affair.
This, we aree told, did violate half a dozen US laws, and was used as grounds for the failed impeachment of Trump. So Trump is as furious with Z as he is with Trudeau, and is especially vindictive in his treatment of them.

Posted by: FrankDrakman | Feb 22 2025 21:57 utc | 123

Key point — the vast majority of the US population does not care at all about Zelensky and the Ukraine. Just as “Joe Biden” was able to walk away from Afghanistan without any domestic consequences, President Trump can walk away from the Ukraine if he chooses.
Don’t forget a very easy concession to Russia which President Trump would probably love to make — agree with Russia that the bombing of the NordStream pipelines was a “terrorist act”, and cooperate with Russia in tracking down everyone responsible and sending them to Moscow for trial.
Probably that investigation would reveal prominent Democrats in the Biden Administration were involved, along with some US military officers Trump would like to get rid of, and various other politicians in the UK, Norway, the Ukraine, and perhaps Germany too. There is your Nuremburg Trials! Twenty years in a Siberian work camp seems light punishment for the damage that was done to Germany and Europe.

Thanks for your reply. What was curious about that came from Doctorow’s reaction, particularly to the assertion by Russia that US business had lost @ $300 Billion from its withdrawal from the Russian market–he tried to refute that without any evidence. Now, if any entity is going to know how much US businesses lost in Russia, it would be the Russians. And that would likely be from the start of heavy sanctions in 2014 since what was said was US losses due to sanctions. For all his smarts, Doctorow occasionally steps on a rake as all of do.
IMO, there are many who have yet to read this: “Plenary Session of the Future Technologies Forum at Moscow’s World Trade Centre”. unimperator’s comment at 66 implies that he might have.
Today, Putin held a Security Council meeting where he wanted to hear Lavrov’s comments about his G-20 experience and then to look at issues related to the post-Soviet space. What Lavrov said during and after the G-20 was important and policy-shaping in some respects, but those two articles are also being neglected to a degree even though they’re shorter than the usual Lavrov.

I am hoping for a strong enough recovery that yet unimagined Yalta II type agreements ban all the regime change witchcraft the US media/foreign policy complex has learned how to cast – all in service to their war vampire covens. Accepting that you did not intend evil, but your pride about doing good has caused incalculable damage takes time because it is such a difficult realization.”

This is a comment worthy as a reference point for the overall objective. It echoes Putin’s goal for ending the SMO, but on a grander scale. ‘You’ in the final paragraph I take to mean populations of western states. And it even applies to what is happening in the Israeli conflict as well. Especially appropriate is its application to tomorrow’s important vote in Germany, since it reverses Goethe’s Mephistopheles’s response to Faust: ‘I am that power which always seeks to do evil but always accomplishes good’ (or words to that effect).
If indeed that is what Trump is exposing here, with the help of both Russia and China, (because it needs their help if it is going to succeed) — as far as I am concerned, he can take all the byways he needs to take in order to get there.

Fort Knox, IMO is more kabuki. The latest episode of this season’s “The Apprentice”.
If they audit and release results that it is short, the global economy may tailspin.
There is also gold supposedly stored in Colorado. They can always say the balance is offsite at the other facility. All sorts of shenanigans may become possible.
Bessent has resisted calls to mark American gold to market from $42 to $3,000 per ounce. I think they will wait until this audit is over to make any such moves.
As I mentioned about burning the furniture. America isn’t quite desperate enough to leverage its gold supply, which is the only remaining tangible source of strength for the USD as de-dollarization has been normalized.
As I have for years, I maintain that the money is not real.
America’s big problems are consumer debt and education. Until those two are resolved, nothing meaningful and lasting will progress in American society. Trump is starting to run out of time to deliver on his domestic promises. The campaign season for the next midterms starts in the summer of this year.

After the war is over, how will Russia get a Russia friendly government to govern what’s left of the former Ukraine because the remaining rump Ukrainian state that’s left will be the part of Ukraine which hates Russia the most and always has? Seems to me that Russia will let them have whatever government they want but with demilitarisation strictly enforced and enforceable conditions of their dealings with the West imposed on the EU and the US as part of the negotiated peace settlement.

When composing this note I had only the US in mind because that is who has to get behind behaving based upon the truth. Recognition of sinful nature, forgiveness and repentance are still pretty strongly rooted in the US.
For Europe I am less optimistic. Unlike the current US, the top layers of their beaurocracies are remaining in tact. So talks with them will be nothing more than trying to argue with a zealot.
I hope I’m wrong. Right now UK / Europe in the sa.e position of Nixon being tagged with Johnson’s Vietnam.

Ukrainian diplomats lobbied for extension of the Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act beyond 2023, but it expired on September 30 2023. No weapons were ever delivered to Ukraine under the terms of the act. Instead, three other American budget programs were used to supply materiel to Ukraine: the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, Foreign Military Financing, and Presidential Drawdown Authority.

Thanks for your reply. Big Picture controls the future pathway. There’s zero chance of creating division between Russia and China, nor the aspirations of most Eurasian nations, with the exception of its Western Peninsula–Even Myanmar wants inclusion with all the turmoil it’s experiencing. New Zealand, Australia, South Korea and Japan will eventually join because of geoeconomic pull, and none of those nations want war. I’ve already painted the Taiwan picture. China has taken a lesson from Russia about the need to have massive amounts of armaments on-hand to sustain modern warfare–a lesson the Outlaw US Empire has yet to learn: Despite the many billions in contracts approved by Congress for the USMIC to fill, none of those corporations has undertaken the expansion required to fill them in any form of timely manner. Just go and read their quarterly and annual reports for the evidence. They’re booking those contracts as revenues before delivering anything to keep their grossly inflated stock price steady and the dividend flow maximized. Their Neoliberal Parasite owners are on their own side/island. If you haven’t, there’re two must read books by Dr. Michael Hudson: Super Imperialism (do get the 3rd edition) and Killing the Host. (If things go as planned, the 3rd Volume in his trilogy will be published this Fall/Winter, which he promises will be a Wowser.)
The actual question at issue for those of us stuck within the Outlaw US Empire is Can/Will Trump alter the structure over federal government control to enable the beginnings of the retreat from Empire? This is the internal war within the Empire’s ruling class. What’s been put into place since 1978 will be difficult to rapidly undo and is dependent on the D-party being replaced by a genuine citizen’s party that will provide actual opposition to Neoliberalism and its Neocons, who as we now see are allied, whereas initially they weren’t. What US citizens can do to help themselves is to eat away at Neoliberal and Neocon control over local and state politics. Do people have any idea of what they want for their political future and that of the kin, for most places I look I see very little dialog on that and related issues. Instead of allowing social media and mass media to continue to atomize society, start using the former to create solidarity. The recipe is the same as it was when the Money Power was first confronted in the early 1880s–and they had no modern communications aside from the telegraph, yet they almost gained control of the federal government.

quote – “Perhaps President Trump himself was “kept in the dark” regarding these preparations. I doubt it, but I consent to that possibility. In any case, it does not alter the fact that these developments occurred during his tenure, and constituted the final stages of the preparation for open warfare against Russia that ultimately commenced in early 2022.”

Yes, we know that. Or at least I believe in it strongly. But we are talking about neocons here. I’m not a fan of Mercouris but he’s right when he says: “they do not have a reverse gear”.
To the 2nd paragraph of your reply: yes, that would be wonderful if that would happen. But somehow I don’t believe I will see this in my remaining lifetime. When looking at Western societies of today, I simply can’t see any indication of citizens rejecting neoliberalism or even starting to unite again (like in labor orgs/unions). Just look at the peace movement, it’s basically non existent in the West.
As Emanuel Todd writes in his latest book: the western civilization has to find and redefine itself again. And I guess that will need some really hard crash to make them realize that the current model is at its end.

What they’re calling the sh!t sandwich for Zelensky, back in the day Tsar Ivan the 4th, aka Ivan Grozny or Ivan the Terrible, would have called a jar of fleas.
This was a device Ivan would use against troublesome Boyars – they would be requested to provide Ivan with a jar full of fleas. The impossibility of this task meant that Ivan then had a lever to use against them, a thing to accuse them of to justify any subsequent punitive actions. They failed to do what we asked.

Although somewhat OT to the thread, Sputnik has an excellent article directly related to the Empire’s illegal activities over the years. “How the CIA Gave Birth to the Modern Drug Trade in the Americas”, has a nice map as its header and relates info followers of this issue may not know about.
Another article relates to the info I provided yesterday about some idiot R-Party Senators seeking to remove the USA from the UN, “Russia, China Could Pick Up the Slack If US Quit UN, But Body’s Dissolution Would Trigger Conflicts”, but what the article fails to examine is the cost the US would suffer. IMO, what this reflects is the utter inhumanity of that Senatorial group; instead of forcing the US out of the UN, the world would be much better if that grouo would remove themselves from life–without discovering exactly who, I’ll bet they’re all ZioEvangelicals.

Entire world is witnessing an old American Game of “Cowboys & Indians” where cowboys are currently siding with mightier tribe at the end of bloody tribal war, instigated by cowboys for profits & land grab, while offering last minute “help” to the weaker tribe in exchange for oil exploration & mining rights, before “liquidation” of tribe’s cheef.
Too bad that agreement on land grab couldn’t be presented in Riyadh to the mightier Indian tribe. Otherwise it would’ve stopped them advance further…

Apparently not – Biden forgot, Trump has commented on it.
It is the modus operandi for the US though. The interest on the WWI loans was so onerous nobody in Europe could ever pay them off (in the end everyone defaulted, Germany first).
It took until 1972 for the Soviet Union to repay its Lend-Lease debt, the UK until 2006 iirc. That is many, many decades of fiscal drag…bear that in mind when your leaders get on their hind legs to beat the drums of war.

By chance event I followed the COVID outbreak right from the start. I forget the name of the city, and thus the exact location, but the first people in the entire world to come down with COVID where in China near a Chinese funded biolab. The Chinese were slow to admit it was happening and at first their government claimed it originated from a local “wet market.” That is, from a traditional Chinese market near the biolab that sold raw meat, and that included wild harvested bats. They eat every sort of thing in China. The spread of COVID to the rest of the world coincided with the Chinese New Year, which is a time when people visit their relatives. And as there are now some Chinese globally, they visited their relatives in other countries and spread the disease.
As for guilt trip, it is now known that we helped to fund the biolab that is located in the area where the spread of the disease started. Hey, in China. And it may be that we were involved in developing the disease that then got transferred to China.

The issue of Ukraine’s future viability doesn’t seem to have been considered: it doesn’t have a pot to piss in. Then again, with an irrational EU perhaps this is a non-issue. Perhaps it will allow the Ukraine to become a member thus, a recipient of its massive largesse, all at the cost to the European tax-payers. Fuck the failing EU economy, that’s not important.

Perhaps we underestimate what level of security that kind of money can buy, his only problem is getting out of Ukraine to bury himself in whatever rabbit hole he has chosen, I expect that has been well planned. Never underestimate the desire of the uber wealthy to protect their own skin to enjoy their ill gotten gains. There are no shortage of lessons about vassals getting permanently retired when their use expires, even Z would surely be aware.

Thanks for your reply. US government’s involvement with the drug trade is long and notorious for its lack of exposure by media, beginning with its involvement in the Opium Wars aimed at China when it used Turkish-sourced opium. We then had the u8nspoken alliance between the Feds and Mafia over heroin distribution into Black inner-city areas that began once WW1 ended and the supply chains repaired–that was one of Hoover’s big money makers. It seems that CIA took over all that after WW2 with its access to te Golden Triangle region in Southeast Asia. As with the Outlaw US Empire’s illegal wars, no one has seen prison that was involved with any of the governments drug trade actions aside from the poor kids on the street–“Freddie’s Dead.”

As Emanuel Todd writes in his latest book…
Posted by: Zet | Feb 22 2025 23:03 utc | 152
I was just looking up the exact quote for this and then stumbled upon the following by Todd. We all know that the US GPD is inflated and Todd is trying to put a number to it:

To assess GDP per capita, Todd relies on John Maynard Keynes’ famous principle: “It is better to be approximately right than exactly wrong.” He examines the healthcare sector, which accounts for 18.8% of US GDP – almost twice as much as in Europe, even though life expectancy in the US is falling. He estimates that only 40% of this spending represents real value and applies this reasoning broadly to the services sector.
Since services account for 80% of US GDP, or $60,800 per capita, Todd argues that their real value is overestimated by 60% and adjusts it to $24,320. He then adds the contribution of productive sectors such as agriculture and industry, which he leaves unchanged at USD 15,200 per capita, as they represent material wealth.
By adding these two values, he estimates the “real domestic product” per capita at USD 39,520 – a figure that is significantly lower than the official GDP per capita of USD 76,000.

Perhaps the US is trying to be a friend to pre-empt a Sino-Russian alliance.

Thanks for your reply. 50’s a good age. I was busy building my library as the internet hadn’t captured me yet. George Warcriminal Bush was POTUS and naked short selling was rampant as the Real Estate/Banking Fraud Ponzi Scheme was still building. I probably learned more from when I was 50 up until I was 65 than during any other period in my life. May the seas be smooth and the wind fill your sails.

Back of the envelope genuine US GDP I’ve used is $15 Trillion, not the stated $25 Trillion. Hudson and I have discussed the reasons for that. His figure is comparable.

Oh, so you are not saying that.
Or, it’s colonizer projection.
I see.

Then what next … Starbucks and Disney?
If such crap is allowed back in to Russia it certainly would illustrate what Atlanticist liberals Putin and his regime really are.

If it is true that the deal requires all of Ukraine’s mineral wealth including oil, gas, coal etc then it should be understood that anything worth having is either
i) under private ownership, having been acquired by the local corrupt oligarch elites
ii) on a promise to various international ‘investors’
iii) under the control of the RF
Which would explain Elensky’s hokey-cokey over sign or not to sign. He’s probably spending the weekend in ‘discussion’ flinty eyed oligarchs bearing sharpened knives, while quite a few crinkly-mouthed OCGFC types wonder when they are going to finally make some money and cursing Trump and Elensky in equal measure.
My bet is the deal does not get signed.
I suspect Trump wants the same, for if Z does sign, Trump owns the war lock, stock and barrel as well as finding out that he’s been sold an empty bag. The deal could turn out to be a trap for both of them.

US government’s involvement with the drug trade is long and notorious for its lack of exposure by media, beginning with its involvement in the Opium Wars aimed at China when it used Turkish-sourced opium. . . .
Posted by: karlof1 | Feb 23 2025 1:06 utc | 186
=============
Thanks for filling in the details. We have been reading about this for years in the alternative press and elsewhere.
Not sure about the Turkish-sourced opium, though.
Perhaps they started with Turkish opium, but the main source became India. The onshore sector (growing, processing, and storing, and opium auctions) was handled primarily or perhaps even exclusively by Baghdadi Jews (the top dog being David Sassoon). American and British shipping firms ran the opium clippers to China from Calcutta and other ports on the Bay of Bengal. An interesting source is Basil Lubbock, The Opium Clippers, published in Glasgow in 1933. This book might not find a publisher these days.
