To Avoid Fighting Large Conflicts Trump Is Creating Smaller Ones

Yesterday, during a media event, president-elect Donald Trump held one of his typical ramblings (video, transcript) which jump from issue to issue without any connecting lines.

It was mostly about his plans for his upcoming reign. He promised more tax relief for the rich, repelling environmental regulations and an increase in oil and gas production.

But what caught the minds of most observers were his ideas on foreign policy.

Trump is rejecting to further raise conflicts with the most obvious 'enemies' – Russia, China and Iran. He is instead diverting the public by providing new targets – Canada, Greenland and Panama.

Trump said that he understood the position of Russia with regards to NATO membership of Ukraine. He thus seems to be genuinely intended to end that conflict:

We're going to have to settle some big problems that are going on right now. We're going to have to settle up with Russia, Ukraine — that's a disaster. I look at numbers every week. … So, we'll have to get that one straightened out too. That's a tough one, much tougher than it would have been before it started, I can tell you that.

and:

So, you know, a big part of the problem was Russia for many, many years, long before Putin, said, you could never have NATO involved with Ukraine. Now they've said that — that's been like written in stone. And somewhere along the line Biden said no, they should be able to join NATO. Well, then Russia has somebody right on their doorstep and I could understand their feeling about that.

But there were a lot of mistakes made in that negotiation. And when I heard the way that Biden was negotiating, I said you're going to end up in a war and it turned out to be a very bad war. And it could escalate — that war could escalate to be much worse than it is right now.

Well, my view is that it was always understood. In fact, I believe that they had a deal and then Biden broke it. They had a deal which would have been a satisfactory deal to Ukraine and everybody else. But that Biden said, no, you have to be able to join NATO.

He goes on to pressure NATO countries to pay more money to the U.S. weapon industry. But it does not feel like he is willing to do a deal – more money in exchange for continuing the war in Ukraine. It is just his usual way of pressuring allies.

Trump is then asked when he will meet Putin:

Well, I can't tell you that, but I know that Putin would like to meet. I don't think it's appropriate that I meet until after the 20th, which I hate because every day people are being — many, many young people are being killed, soldiers. You know, the land is very flat and the hundreds of thousands of soldiers from each — many hundreds of thousands from each side are dead and they're laying in fields all over the place, nobody to even collect, there's landmines all over, it's a disaster.

I hope to have — six months. … No, I would think — I hope long before six months. Look, Russia is losing a lot of young people and so is Ukraine and it should have never been started. That's a war that should have never happened. I guarantee you, if I were president that war would have never happened.

Continuing that war seems to be really off the table for Trump – at least for now. That he is openly recognizing Russia's strategic concern – Ukraine in NATO – gives me some hope that he will find a way to solve the conflict.

During his talk Trump did not mention China at all even as a main competitor or even an 'enemy'. China only comes up in the context of the Panama canal (more on that below.)

Trump also rejected to talk about Iran:

Q: The last time you were here, you were asked a question about the US possibly launching a preemptive strike on Iran. You said you wouldn't answer that question.

Trump: And I said I don't talk about — it's a military strategy. … Look, it's a military strategy and I'm not answering your questions on military strategy. All right. One more. Brian, go ahead. Brian.

Trump has thereby rejected the three potential conflicts, with Russia, China and Iran, that were long leading the headlines. He likely perceives that there is nothing to win in these.

But as he has to provide some fodder for the media as well as for his MAGA followers he is instead coming up with new conflicts which might even turn out to be winnable.

Why not take Canada and integrate it into the U.S. itself? Let's take Greenland from Denmark to better position the U.S. in the Arctic -  or recapture the Panama Canal:

The Panama Canal is a disgrace, what took place at the Panama Canal. Jimmy Carter gave it to them for $1 and they were supposed to treat us well.

We gave it away for a dollar, but the deal was that they have to treat us fairly. They don't treat us fairly. They charge more for our ships than they charge for ships of other countries. They charge more for our navy than they charge for navies of other countries.

They laugh at us because they think we're stupid, but we're not stupid anymore. So the Panama Canal is under discussion with them right now. They violated every aspect of the agreement and they've morally violated it also. And they want our help because it's leaking and not in good repair and they want us to give $3 billion to help fix it. I said, well, why don't you get the money from China, because China is basically taking it over.

China is at both ends of the Panama Canal. China is running the Panama Canal and they come to see this Biden, this guy who should never have been allowed even to run for president. Of course, she shouldn't have either because that never happened. I had to beat two people, not one. But they want $3 billion to fix the Panama Canal that's run by China and makes a lot of money, China.

One of the most profitable structures ever built, because you have ships lined up back to Florida, frankly, and they just keep going through. And the numbers are staggering $0.5 million to $1 million a ship. And they took it away from us, meaning we gave it to him for a dollar, but not going to happen. What they've done to us, they've charged us — they've overcharged our ships, overcharged our navy and then when they need repair money, they come to the United States to put it up, we get nothing.

Most of Trump's claims are false. The charges to pass the canal depend on a ship's size, not on its nationality. China isn't running the canal but has rented port space on each side of it. The biggest problem with the canal is the lack of freshwater needed to run it. It is restricting the numbers of ships that can pass through.

But anyway – like ready made conflicts over Canada and Greenland it is a great theme to divert attention from other conflicts.

It reminds of Ronald Reagan who created minor conflicts, like in Grenada, to be free to make deals with the Soviet 'evil empire' Union.

As Gilbert Doctorow remarks:

The logic I see is that a bellicose stand on produced-to-order conflicts that can be solved at little cost to Washington, the proverbial kicking ass that Ronald Reagan practiced to great effect, is intended to provide cover for what otherwise would look like a humiliating defeat for Washington should it cut military aid to Kiev and stand by passively while the Kremlin imposes capitulation on the Zelensky regime.

Dean Baker is making a similar, but larger point:

Dean Baker @DeanBaker13 – 18:31 UTC · Jan 7, 2025

Trump's pretty clever, he decided that it would be too difficult to confront ostensible U.S. enemies like Russia, China, or North Korea so he's decided to confront allies like Denmark and Canada. It's very MAGA!

Trump wants to avoid the larger potential conflicts as they are too difficult to manage and win. He is instead creating his own small conflicts right next to the U.S. backyard.

It is a nice trick and it may even see some success.

Panama will probably agree to some canal rebates or to a priority for U.S. ships. Canada may concede on trade issues. And the EU, which didn't even protest when the U.S. blew up its main energy supply, may well hand over Greenland without even making a fuzz about it.

All three potential wins which would be welcome by MAGA.

Yet for no reason but to obey US orders they gratuitously picked a fight with China by arresting a top Huawei executive on self-evidently bogus charges. They’ll roll over and obey far worse than that.
Canada deserves the same fate as Europe.

Right, Canada took it’s distances from Chiha during the last decade. However there had been a desire by many Canadian businessmen and politicians to develop good business projects between China and Canada. There has been a recognition a long time ago that there was a need to diversify the Canadian economy across the world and make our economy less dependent on the US. The internal market is relatively small in Canada. Of course there was never unanimity on this topic since important industrial areas of Canada are happy to just trade South of the border. The newer more innovative businesses need access to all of the world markets without interference from Washington.
Now we are back to block politics: the US against everyone else. Very sad.

Sounds like more boss-service, to Trump who whipped up the blame China from the start. Throw the boss a bone by blaming them? If you must insist on a conspiracy theory, deliberately planting an experimental biowarfare agent on the Chinese makes more sense, speaking with a very loose meaning of the word, sense.
There’s been so much nonsense on this, I’m not very interested any more. I still strongly suspect Fauci of deliberately favoring mRNA and especially of undermining foreign vaccines, but no Trumper sees anything wrong with that, just me.

“As for the segue into election conspiracy, that shows yet again all the anti-vaxxer stuff is largely Trumpery. It’s not about the science, it’s not about the humanity, it’s just about serving God Trump.”
Actually, the COVID response (including the mRNA vax) was the one thing that Trump got very wrong. He should have figured out that he was being played by Fauci early on, but he still thinks he took the right approach. It’s probably his biggest failure, and I wish he would own up to it and move on. It’s probably the biggest divergence between Trump and his base.

I don’t post here often, cause I ain’t got a lot to say, I’m more here to learn, which occurs every single day. Keeps me coming back over ‘n over. However, because of the taboo tale I’m about to espouse,  I’m writing this at the tail end of this thread and perhaps after the bartender’s gone to bed? Without trying to raise William Gruff’s ire over my obvious t.d. syndrome, I believe tRump’s gonna make for as horrible a prez, as he performed the first time! I had high hopes for him, up until pompous murdered Soleinami and tRump bragged he’d ordered it. At that time I was unaware of what had occurred previously during his term. Namely the Fort Detrick virus, later erroneously renamed the Wuhan virus. The fort Detrick virus began affecting seniors at upscale retirement communities around Washington DC, but at first predominantly in nearby northern Virginia during June of 2019. Began killing residents by the end of June, so began getting local news attention. Also began spreading to other upscale retirement/nursing facilities and by mid July the CDC along with the Maryland dept.  of health shut fort Detrick’s bio lab down for many violations, but one was pathogens escaping their waste system. Maryland’s health department wanted them closed down permanently for countless violations spanning decades, but the army reopened it in the spring of 2020 citing nat’l security concerns. The above can easily be found, still, by searching for ‘mysterious pneumonia like disease killing retirement community residents in northern Virginia June 2019’.  The links have never worked here, as I’ve tried several times. Local news was abuzz the rest of the summer, until the fall when an equally mysterious phenomenon occurred with people dropping everywhere due to vaping, which was later claimed they were vaping liquid vitamin e, which is indeed toxic if someone’s foolish enough to vape it.
The militaries of the world have sporting games every four years and similar to the olympics, except only military personnel are allowed to perform and the U.S. team performed uncharacteristically badly and even had to leave early, because several members were extremely ill. The military games were held during the month of November 2019,  in Wuhan, China.
tRump’s biggest campaign promises, for me, were term limits for senators and congress critters, but quite late in his campaign he also promised to drain the swamp! Yet when it came down to the health of UCAians (United Cesspools of America), tRump balked and went with the likes of Anthony fouci and the rest of the swamp creatures. Depended on him fully even tho the evil doctor had been killing Americans with his patented drugs since the eighties, when HIV was raising a ruckus. tRump also waited nine months before taking any actions whatsoever, so the blame could be erroneously attached to China. T’was also his vaccines clot shots coming at us at warp speed, but it was genocide Brendan who began mandating them. However, from my memories our hospitals were killing covid patients for money and they were big bucks. The lockdown proved more foolish than prudent, especially in the remnants of a capitalistic society.
So knowing what I know now I can say with confidence that over the next four years and beyond, hold on to your skivvies,  undies, or whatever you can grab hold of and pray you survive. At most of our ages there won’t be much  time for popcorn.
Now before I pass out, as both Scorpion and uncle tungsten know I can’t hold too many beers, I’d like to thank the bartender for his compelling news and equally this forum where I’ve learned quite a bit for just another dumbed down american graduate, so thanks to all who’ve helped in that endeavor. Knowing how obtuse the country’s leaders are where our host is from and the draconian policies they’ve inflicted on their citizens including Reiner Fuellmich’s plight at the hands of German authorities who kidnapped him from Mexico and forcibly escorted him back to Germany where they’ve humiliated him daily, according to Peter Koenig from his December 2, 2024 substack article. So I get why our host has to tip toe over certain subjects, so with that I’ll raise a last toast to my demise beneath these two empty barstools next to me and bid y’all adieu. Sweet dreams barflies, we’re gonna need ‘em.  I’ll await the bartender to remove my carcass to the curb and later ascertain if I’ve once again been banned?

Greenland and Panama low hanging fruits. Greenland with a population of around 56000 could declare independence and join US for an offer of like hundred thousand dollars per person and US passport. Musk could chip in. Better buy than twitter

Don’t be silly – no one is going to vote to join another country just because they offer every citizen $100K!

MAGA brains at work conveniently forget the war WAS going on during his first term, just outside the headlines since Russia was [naively] not there yet and over 15k were being killed. He cannot possibly claim not to know about Minsk 2.0 and the slow motion arming of Kiev (https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2022/12/22/ffci-d22.html).
As for DPRK, there’s no way Kim is going to trust the yankees again now that he is strongly allied with Russia (notice the lack of retaliation to the short-lived martial law down south in trying to provoke the north into a conflict (DPRK has never shied away from provocations like trash balloons, but did nothing this time)).
On the other hand, maybe trump is trying to wind down NATO by pissing of the european members like denmark. Only the [ironically most stable G7 member atm) made a comment about the Greenland brouhaha: https://www.france24.com/en/europe/20250109-italy-uk-downplay-trump-greenland-panama-comments
ps- Disagree with your conclusion though. IF the dances agree to hand over Greenland completely (already in treat to have usa troops there), they can declare independence and seek solace with Russia. Likewise Panama knows they’re no longer in an unipolar world. China, Russia, etc. (https://san.com/cc/greenland-vows-independence-from-denmark-following-trumps-offer-to-buy/ –> https://ddnews.gov.in/en/greenland-independence-is-possible-but-joining-the-us-unlikely-denmark-says/)

Would that be the aggressive — hostile even to everyone else in Pakistan — type the Blair regime urged to move to the UK, via campaigns there by NGOs such as the British Council … an agenda which officials of Blair’s administration later admitted was implemented by the government out of sheer spite against the British public (shades of Shirley Williams in the 1970s)?
Recall also that the Saudis spent a lot on building new Mosques throughout continental Europe, which were to be staffed by Saudi-type sectarian extremists. Were some also set up in the UK?

I don’t think hunting for food and torturing animals/vivisection are the same. I am a vegetarian. I have been for over 40 years. Partially because I don’t like hunting. I was taken hunting all the time as a kid. I ceased eating animals because I didn’t like killing them. But I think that if someone is going to eat meat, it is more honest if they kill the animal themselves.

“if someone is going to eat meat, it is more honest if they kill the animal themselves.”
“More honest”, maybe, but not more “humane”, not better. A mafia hitman may be more honest than J. Carter, but not more humane or a better person, though Carter has caused much more suffering than any mafia.
Most of the meat eaters can’t even look at an animal in pain, let alone kill and eat it. Yet they, including the ones having pets, happily eat them when others kill them. They manage this by not looking at/into it. For hunters it’s much more difficult not to look at it, so either they’re much more dishonest, ignorant, deluded or simply heartless.
“I don’t think hunting for food and torturing animals/vivisection are the same.”
True, not the same, but close, considering especially the hunters such as Milites can easily buy meat, i.e. can choose the easy path of not looking. Seemingly it’s easier or fun for them to kill.

I don’t agree that Trump is picking on these three because he wants to pick on some easy-beats.
Rather, I think that deep-down Trump is a devote of the Monroe Doctrine, with the added twist that (unlike Monroe’s time) the USA has to worry about threats coming over the Arctic Sea to threaten the USA: hence Canada, hence Greenland.
If I am right then Trump will also be aware of the quid-pro-quo of the Monroe Doctrine: other Great Powers don’t play around in the USA’s sphere of influence, and in return the USA doesn’t play around in their backyard.
This will be most immediately felt in Ukraine, for obvious reasons. But the real deal will come about on the issue of Taiwan, where the USA has been shoving its nose right up Xi’s ass.
So, yeah, Ukraine dumped like a stone. Big deal, that’s as much a swipe at the neocon’s as it is an ideological bell-weather.
But look to those provocative “freedom of navigation” trips by US warships in the Taiwan Strait. If they stop then the Taipea government should be very, very worried that they are going to be hung out to dry.
The Philippines too, not to mention South Korea and Japan.
Because if Trump is a Monroe-kinda-guy then the USA will no more piss around in that backyard than he would tolerate China pissing around in Venezuala. Or Panama.

It’s funny that genocidal colonizers always want to protect their homeland.
My theory is that we’re well into an age of reverse colonialism where North Africa, West Asia, and Central America are sending their surplus people to take advantage of the generous welfare systems of the West, welfare systems which would not be possible without the initial colonization of those “homelands”.
What goes around comes around.
