To all my friends here at MoA, I wish you a healthy new year. Please remember to pat yourself on the back for being a good person, and trying to what’s best for others.
Last night I was with friends, and one said “I’m just trying to be helpful and positive to the people I come into contact with. I can do this; it makes them happier, and that makes me happier”.

AFRICAN & BLACK HISTORY
@AfricanArchives
History of the New Year’s Watch Night Service.
The Watch Night Services in Black communities can be traced back to gatherings on December 31, 1862, also known as “Freedom’s Eve.”
THREAD
On that night, black people came together in churches and private homes all across the nation, anxiously awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation actually had become law.
Just a few months earlier, on September 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln issued the executive order that declared enslaved people in the rebelling Confederate States legally free. However, the decree would not take effect until the start of the new year.
Then, at the stroke of midnight, it was January 1, 1863, and all slaves in the Confederate States were declared legally free.
When the news was received, there were prayers, shouts and songs of joy as people fell to their knees and thanked God.
White enslavers feared that religion, which was often used to quell slave resistance, could incite the exact opposite if practiced without observance. They wrote laws that restricted worship and large gatherings, such as that in the 1848 Georgia Slave Code:
‘No person of color . . . shall be allowed to preach, to exhort, or join in any religious exercise with any persons of color, either free or slave, there being more than seven persons of color present.’ —1848 Georgia Slave Code
AFRICAN & BLACK HISTORY
@AfricanArchives
·
18h
Despite these laws, enslaved people sought to exercise their own religious customs, including Christianity, Islam, and indigenous faith practices reflective of the homes from which they were stolen.
They convened at praise houses on plantations or secretly gathered in the woods, where they practiced their faith under the protective cover of the trees and brush in what became known as “hush harbors.”
It’s been 160 years since that first Freedom’s Eve and many of us were never taught the African American history of Watch Night, but tradition still brings us together at this time every year to celebrate “how we got over.”

@ aleph
Your post regarding superficial relationships with “non-player characters” (NPC’s, iow “entities lacking/refusing knowledge and, thus, agency”) resonates with me.
My own decision was to minimize or end those relationships entirely. I decided I have no use or time for people committed to disregarding or exploiting almost everyone else on the planet. I maintain friendships only with people who never stop learning.
I tried for decades to “reach” people. Instead, they continued subjecting me to stories from NYT, WAPO, WSJ, FOX, etc, drama from their workplace, summaries about places they visited on their expense accounts taken from the backs of the poor they never consider, etc. By now, chatbots are probably about as entertaining and intelligent.
Cutting NPCs out of my life was an act of mental self-preservation.

Not so happy for some in Germany
Maybe economic and political crisis not assisting or
been plunged into New Year’s chaos after five people were killed by fireworks and 400 were arrested as rioters caused mayhem across the nation.
While revellers across the country traditionally ring in the new year by setting off large numbers of fireworks in public places, last night’s celebrations were heavily tainted by the use of fireworks against emergency officials.
Among the dead was a 24-year-old man who was killed by a homemade firework that is believed to have gone off prematurely near Paderborn in North Rhine-Westphalia
Police believe he had constructed the pyrotechnic rocket himself.
In Berlin, 30 police officers and one firefighter were injured in confrontations or attacks during New Year’s Eve, leading to 400 arrests, city officials said.
Hundreds of police officers from across the country were deployed to the capital to help prevent further violence.
Terrifying footage showed windows getting shattered by the force of the explosions as Germans fled the area.
In Cologne, police said that two officers were injured after fireworks had been shot at emergency service workers, while Leipzig saw 50 people attack firefighters and cops.
Etc

Uncle Howard brought back a war-bride from Nurenburg, nee Margarathe Popp. Cousin Cathy told me that she would awaken to her mother’s nightmare screams of “Die Bomben. Die Bomben!” Last night in numerous German cities, similar outcries may have occurred amongst those who were tiny children during WWII.
Perfidious Albion schnookered Hitler into sending the Luftwaffe over London, replacing their attacks on Britain’s air bases. Adolf did a lot for the Allied cause and that bad decision set the game in motion, following his failure to halt the Dunkirk evacuation of the BEF and a number of French and even a few Belgian troops.
Question is, whether that maternal side descendant of the Austrian head for the Rottenchild crime clan, actually did spend some months in Britain in 1913…most probably receiving hypnotic “therapy” at the Tavistock Institute.
If the AFD wanted to become assured of becoming the Prime Minister in Berlin; all he would need to do would be to promise to demand that Britain and the U$$A would sign a peace treaty at long last with Germany.
The rider on such an appeal would be for all occupation forces, almost exclusively the U$$A military to get the hell outta Dodge. Pronto.
Though of merely minuscule German DNA…perhaps almost as much as 2%…my feeling is that the German people have suffered long enough. That agony has been going on for 80 years on the 8th of May.
“Yankee go Home” has been a much used slogan in several lands for many decades. It is about time for the major
shareholders in the WarDefense Industry, to get a quick kick in the ass. Ditto for their profits from occupation of South Korea.

First Sight
Lambs that learn to walk in snow
When their bleating clouds the air
Meet a vast unwelcome, know
Nothing but a sunless glare.
Newly stumbling to and fro
All they find, outside the fold,
Is a wretched width of cold.
As they wait beside the ewe,
Her fleeces wetly caked, there lies
Hidden round them, waiting too,
Earth’s immeasureable surprise.
They could not grasp it if they knew,
What so soon will wake and grow
Utterly unlike the snow.

This ISIS attack by a ten year US military vet in NOLA as well as this other guy who was just found with an enormous amount of explosives at a Virginia farm who is said to be a white nationalist associated with “No Lives Matter” movement, (whatever that is) both have me very suspicious. Why would ISIS be mad at the US when they just spent billions and acted as their airforce to ensure their rebranded take over of Syria? Wouldn’t they be glad their brethren HTS just set up a Caliphate in Damascus that has already been legitimized by the US state department? Bizarre timing to me..

Posted by: James C | Jan 2 2025 2:26 utc | 67

The guy that drove a truck through a crowd in New Orleans killing a dozen people
was a US Army veteran.
But here is how Reuters is currently burying that fact for headline-readers.
Main Reuters headline:
Driver flying ISIS flag rams into New Orleans crowd, killing 15; he may have had help
Subtext:
The suspect, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, a U.S. citizen from Texas who once served in Afghanistan, was killed in a shootout with police after ramming the crowd. Police found weapons and a potential explosive device in the vehicle.
Got that? Doesn’t say US Army veteran. It says he “served in Afghanistan”. Given the headline, that potentially can be misunderstood to mean he served as ISIS.

Nice bit of lateral thinking.
It’ll be fun watching the Yankees pretend they’re not worried.

Posted by: Hoarsewhisperer | Jan 2 2025 12:49 utc | 69

The local Fox channel in New Orleans (which happens to be my home town) said:

According to Fox News, the truck was tracked crossing the southern border into the U.S. at Eagle Pass, Texas, in November. The person who crossed the border with the vehicle in November is not believed to be the attacker.

and that:

Law enforcement recovered a handgun and an AR-style rifle from the truck, which had a Texas license plate and an ISIS flag attached to the trailer hitch.

All just a little too neat for me. Blame the open border and Islxmists. Why not find a Hamxs or Hezbxllah go-cup in the truck too? On the other hand they say he was a veteran.
Meanwhile on France-Info radio, a “Sorbonne professor who is a specialist in US history” immediately blamed Islamixt radicalisation for the attack, and even when the interviewer pointed out that the man was going through a divorce and had threatened to kill his family, the “professor” managed to spin back to Islamixt radicalisation, saying that such unstable individuals are more vulnerable to its influence.

trouble here too
Brussels descended into chaos on New Year’s Eve, as rioters hurled Molotov cocktails at Belgian emergency services and set vehicles ablaze. Police made dozens of arrests, according to local officials, media reports, and videos on social media.
The authorities reported 159 arrests on Wednesday during the overnight unrest, which saw at least 60 vehicles torched across Brussels, which is the seat of the EU Commission and NATO headquarters.
“It was really crazy,” Walter Derieuw, spokesperson for the Brussels Fire Department, told Politico. “We were there to help, and we were getting Molotov cocktails thrown at us.”

Like a John le Carre story.
The car in Las Vegas that was parked in front of a Trump hotel and exploded
has autopilot capability.
(question: could the driver have jumped out of the car window before it reached it’s destination
or does the car normally stop when the weight on the drivers side goes to zero?)
The driver had been shot in the head before the explosion, a gun found on the floor between his feet.
Did he shoot himself one moment before the blast went off?
Did he shoot himself before arriving and let autopilot do the rest?
Did someone else shoot this guy in the head and then set the autopilot destination in motion?

Ukraine must be held accountable for ‘stealing’ US aid – retired Naval officer
Vladimir Zelensky’s government in Ukraine must answer for the corruption and theft of Western aid, according to an opinion piece published in The Hill on Tuesday. The publication comes on the heels of US President Joe Biden’s latest disbursement of aid to Kiev, totaling $2.5 billion.
The article written by James Durso, a retired Navy officer, blasted both the US and NATO for sparking the Ukraine conflict in the first place and enabling the massive theft.
“The American shame is that the US heedlessly expanded NATO to the borders of Russia, and then, after Russia pushed back, enabled and funded the cynical maladministration by the Zelensky government, which will go down in history as one of the greatest examples of waste and theft of Western aid,” reads the piece.
