Moon of Alabama Brecht quote

Presidential Election 2024

"Neither is qualified. Both deserve to lose."

Video: Prof. Jeffrey Sachs Q & A at Cambridge Union as published on Oct 30 2024

Starting at 48:06 min (automated transcript, slightly edited):

Sachs:

I will not vote for a candidate that doesn't meet the minimum threshold for being president of the United States and we have two candidates, lead candidates, that don't. And so I decided I'm not voting – period. Because I want a candidate that actually has some possibility of doing something.

Now maybe they will but not based on what they say every day.

It is a profession of love for Israel's murderous reign in the Middle East. Okay, by itself I wouldn't support that. That's enough for me because Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza and it's sickening and it's obvious and we see it every day. And if a candidate can't figure out to say something about then I can't support them. Period.

But then Kamala Harris, who would normally be my candidate because I was a lifelong Democratic Party voter. Although with great disappointment whether they won or lost. Because when they won I was disappointed with what they did. When they lost I was disappointed that my candidate lost. So I've never been happy for a while about us politics.

It's been five miserable presidents as far as I'm concerned from Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump, Biden, awful all of them. They brought us to the brink of nuclear war. I can't forgive them for that kind of recklessness.

But when it comes to Ukraine Harris says we stand with Ukraine. Just everybody understand what does it mean to stand with Ukraine, like Boris Johnson stands with Ukraine. It means 2,000 Ukrainians killed or wounded severely every single day. That's not standing with Ukraine. That is standing with the destruction of Ukraine. It's exactly the opposite. And so that's a purely Orwellian idea that we're standing with Ukraine by continuing this war.

And that's what she says because she doesn't seem to have any idea other than what she's told to say or she says her ideas. And either way I can't vote for her.

And with Trump – don't even get me started.

So the answer is I don't see either of them based on what they're saying right now doing much.

But I think there's another point that is important in this. I'm not without hope for a quite different reason and that is that our politics is not determined by American presidents. Our politics is determined by the Security State apparatus. And what is happening right now is not in America's security interest and so they could change their mind.

President Putin said something actually very interesting in an interview in 2017, I think in Figaro. By the time he had three presidents as his counterparts, Bush, Obama and Trump, and he said to this French reporter in 2017.

He said: "You know I've dealt with three American presidents. Now they come into office with ideas but then men in dark suits and blue ties come to tell them how the real situation is and you never hear of those ideas again."

And this is from a very tough-minded leader who was himself KGB he understands how the American system works very well. He understands what the CIA means for American foreign policy. He understands that American foreign policy is very deeply rooted.

It's not this one wins then Obama changes everything and then Trump comes in and changes nothing like that. By the way this has been a consistent foreign policy arguably since 19 certainly since 1991 and arguably since 1945.

OT, but I hate Substack.
Substack is geared to marketing.
I really don’t want constantly increasing volumes of Substack garbage in my email box.
IMO the setup is extremely unwieldy.
I was given a gift sub to a particular blog but was never able to access it. Substack told me I was someone else, didn’t recognize my password, then told me to subscribe although I had a gift sub … endless go-round with dialogue boxes.
Another thing: One is obliged to use the same handle across all blogs in Substack. A handle I had used for years on a particular blog became inoperable when the blog moved to Substack because someone else was using it somewhere in the entrails of Substack.
It is another level of control of readers.
No thanks.

Trump Is Bad for Jews and Bad for Israel
On Tuesday, the votes of an estimated 160 million Americans will decide between presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Their choice will chart the course of the next four years for the U.S. itself, but will also have enormous consequences for a Middle East at war. For Israel’s sake, it is critical that Trump loses the race to the White House.
https://www.haaretz.com/opinion/editorial/2024-11-05/ty-article-opinion/the-dangerous-delusion-that-donald-trump-is-good-for-jews-and-israel/00000192-f8cf-d05a-aff6-fccf7f430000

A Trump victory will have horrendous consequences for Israel – opinion
The common answer one gets from Israelis who support Trump when asked about their choice is that “Trump is better for Israel.”
On the surface this appears to be a perfectly logical reply.
First of all, the reality is that in Israel today a majority of the Jewish population is neither liberal nor progressive, so that ab initio, Kamala Harris doesn’t stand a chance, while the conservative (or rather illiberal and regressive) Trump has an inbuilt advantage.
TRUMP HAS also been reported as having called upon Netanyahu to end the war in Gaza and Lebanon, and the mutual blows with Iran as rapidly as possible, before he enters office in January 2025, assuming he wins the upcoming presidential election.
Though many Israelis (including myself) would welcome such a development, Netanyahu and his government are categorically opposed to the conflict ending before a “total Israeli victory.”
The fact, that in the last stage of his election campaign Trump decided to court the Muslim voters in several pivotal states, promising that “unlike the clowns who are currently running the show in the Middle East” (i.e. the Biden administration) he will bring peace to the region immediately, cannot but cause concern in Israeli government circles, since it is known that Trump views the eventual establishment of a Palestinian state as part of a peace process.

Posted by: Turk 152 | Nov 5 2024 17:52 utc | 396 Stepping outside Christian quackery in the US is practically impossible, judging from my personal experience as an atheist, albeit one who generally rejects trying to discuss religion. And Christian prejudices against Islam seem to me to play a role even in such supposedly nonreligious areas as the EU, purportedly so much more secular than the US as I have experienced it. As it happens there were more people of Arab or other Muslim background in my small town than Jews. One of the few Jews I know personally is as much an anti-Zionist activist as health permits. (Also, she’s married to a Palestinian.) Nonetheless, Zionism is indeed nothing but a colonial enterprise, one that started in real world terms with the victory of British imperialism in WWI. I believe the Jewish state must be destroyed, is not the same thing as destroying all the Jews. If the objection that is not even the Hamas program—much less that of other parties in the resistance such as PFLP (the one I tend to favor, as if my opinion mattered to anyone—I also agree. (Yes, I also believe no religious state is the way forward.) I can only explain my comment was responsive by MoA comments that are not so clear and do read to me as straightforwardly antisemitic in the anti-Jewish sense. I believe a socialist state with the right of return for Palestinians (and abrogation of the current Zionist notion of Return for people who never lived in Palestine) is the best route forward.
As to Turkey, my most in depth information on Turkey is Kemal Okuyan’s book Under the Shadow of the Revolution: Berlin, Warsaw, Ankara, 1920. Obviously I do not have an in depth understanding of Turkey. Personally I wouldn’t favor condemning any Turk alive for the events, any more than I would condemn any living Greek for the actions of Greek political entities in the conflicts after WWI on the mainland, even though one could find ample grounds for doing so, as I now understand those events. Overall, I think of the foundation of Turkey as one of a triptych of late bourgeois democratic revolutions, along with the Mexican revolution and the Chinese revolution headed by Sun Yat-sen. I feel bourgeois democracy is better than its predecessors, an advance and vastly preferable to its alternative, fascism, even though both are forms of the dictatorship of capital. Admittedly I think bourgeois democracy today not only can fulfill any revolutionary tasks, but as capitalism decays even its revolutionary heritage is being rejected. The bourgeois democrats want to fire sale the jewels of national heritage, I condemn them for that. These are tentative conclusions subject to change.

Has Sachs issued a mea culpa for and explanation of his actions in Russia in the 1990s?
I would like to read it.
I am sure Sachs really thinks he is doing the right things for the world—to change the world, in fact—but I question many of the activities described at his Wiki page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeffrey_Sachs
NB: Parties can also change.
The Democratic Party started out as the party of slavery.
Then it flipped over to progressivism and peace.
Now it has again flipped to being the war party, the party of lawfare, the party of woke, the party of backroom deals (which was its traditional profile in America’s big cities, where the Dem Party organized immigrant and other communities into political machines).
I will be looking for Sachs to leave the Dem Party behind, as RFK Jr and many others (and Trump, for that matter) have done.

Posted by: Jane | Nov 5 2024 19:26 utc | 405

P.S.
From Jeffrey Sachs’s Wiki page:
“According to the Canadian journalist Naomi Klein, Jeffrey Sachs is one of the architects of “disaster capitalism” after his recommendations in Bolivia, Poland and Russia led to millions of people ending up in the streets.[78]
Sachs could be described as a well-meaning but megalomanical do-gooder who creates more problems than he solves.

Ok I have ignored it long enough and you want some push so I’ll volunteer.
It is not anti English or British to say that the Imperial colonies that were owned and run by the English Empire Builders had no right to carry on existing. Is it Steven?
Eg the SubContinent, Rhodesia, Ceylon, even Hong Kong and MANY others.
Unfortunately for some of these , the genocidak extermination of the natives meant there was not enough of them left to reclaim their ancestral home from the imperialists. Ain’t that so stevie, baby?
Most European colonies have gone back to their native peoples . By armed revolution or otherwise.
Some new US colonies remain in the pacific for instance where they apparently get to be US citizens but their vote doesn’t count as much as most US states.
It’s fucked up. Innit steve?
The biggest mindfuck is the illegal apartheid entity set up in the Levant , first as some bargain with Baron Rothschild getting an iou in the First World War (sic) when the US federal reserve was set up and agreed to support the British Empire late in 1917. Many establishment English Jews were totally against that Zionist plan.
The insane promise to hand over land that wasn’t even in British hands at the time.
Then followed a couple of decades of trying to get khazarian askhanazis to move there and completely overturn the dumb Balfour Declaration which kept the Palestinian Semitic Peoples in place.
Then came the failure of the proxy Nazis to take and keep the old Khazar empire (that’s Ukraine/Crimea regions in short) which then meant the imperative to establish the illegal entity by force as European settlers on the real Semitic peoples of the region.
With the fake excuse that the other European peopleds could not be trusted to not kill Jews! What the fucking fuck, fucked up logic is that?
The illegal apartheid entity had no logical justification to be set up post WW2. And certainly not in The Levant which has been continuously peopled by Semites for Millenia.
It had no justification expanding beyond even that mad enclave.
It has no right to demand more and more like an out of control cancer tumour. Killing all the native Semites and bulldozing ancient history with some fucked eschatological Christian ziofascism.
It MUST stop being!
It’s illegal settlers must return to where they came from.
The illegal imperial colony and its delusional land grabbing, native killing colonialists must hand back everything they have stolen in the last hundred years.
It is that simple. steven.
That is not judaeophobia.
It definitely is Ziofascistphobia though, I am happy to admit.
Even a child can understand that.
Can you?
Just get it!
It isn’t brain surgery, is it steven t johnson?
Rivers to the Seas, there will be No i****L.
Ps Yo! Hasbarats. If you haven’t hit the road yet, the walls are going to close in on your fascist imperial enclave faster daily. Ruuuuuunnnnnnn rabbits.

Another very thoughtful response, I appreciate learning more about your background. That seems like quite a read, the book isnt available but i found a good review. There are remarkable similarities to movements in that era, tied to dethroning the monarchy and creating the democratic ethno-states. Recently, I discovered that Taalat Pasha’s views on creating a homeland in which Turks are safe being eerily similar to the Zionist themes. Historically, these notions werent central to the Ottoman Empire so it seems to be a Western import. I see the democratic state as fragile as Oligarch’s instincts are to use their power to break the democracy to pilfer the state and minorities aligning with them to overthrow the majority. At least the fascists are loyal to the state, whereas the oligarchs spend their time aggrandizing themselves or their tribe.

Absolutely correct. Being an atheist in Europe doesn’t mean you aren’t raised in a society steeped in Christian cultural norms.
That’s not to say that there aren’t ethnic conflicts in a country like Sweden which do not stem from “Christian prejudice” but on the whole I agree with your entire post.

Ending the Abraham Accords, moving the embassy, ending the nuclear agreement, assassinating leaders on peace negotiations, it’s a long list.
Pepe is concerned that Mike Pompeo might be involved in the administration. If he is then war is guaranteed.

It seems like a good idea, until you see what happened to the Libertarian Party. It achieved this status decades ago, I was a member from 1975 and worked on the ballot access petition drives. Ron Paul was its presidential candidate in 1988, I was a volunteer on that campaign. By 1991 the party was infiltrated by enough covert operatives to render it mostly dysfunctional and I quit. Although the Libertarian Party still has national ballot status, it has not run a decent campaign in a long time. Any new party achieving national ballot status will likely soon meet the same fate.
One should also note that the Greens are tied to the Globalist global warming scam.
Also of note, the Constitutionalist Party has a decent platform, but little ballot access, and their current candidates are running what appears to be a one issue anti-abortion campaign. They will never get ballot access with that focus.

Posted by: Monos | Nov 5 2024 20:10 utc | 412
The question is, “why”, though.
I think the answer is deep state thinks they can win the wars eg get the spoils, and Trump can not, eg, he should not get the spoils.
They hate him because he is an outsider, and would likely divide the spoils more evenly among the populace than they would like to, (hence his recent comments about seizing all Iraqi leaders money, making NATO members pay for American protection and his famous “take Syria’s oil” quip.
It is easy to agree with Trump, if you are a lowly pleb, and dont care about the murder of war. It is easy to agree with deep state, if you fancy yourself part of their “big club”, and also dont care about the murder of war.
At the core, however, neither are opposed to the murder of war, the argument is about how and who gets what after victory.

@Jane #405

Has Sachs issued a mea culpa for and explanation of his actions in Russia in the 1990s?

No, but Sachs does not need to. Sachs has clearly stated what he tried to do in Russia in the early 1990s: he was trying to replicate what he did in Poland even earlier.
What he tried to do was to use Western capital, injected into Russia, to stabilize the economy while it transitioned from a Marxist-Leninist system to a capitalist one. And he was soundly rejected.
He was not the one who advocated mass privatization of state resources to thieves/future oligarchs.
He was not the one who helped Yeltsin get re-elected via deployment of cash and consultants.
Sachs has talked about the things he did, the things he tried to and failed, in interviews with Alexander Mercouris and Glenn Diesen.
Wiki = garbage. The actual architects of Russia’s lost decade include Bill Clinton, Browder, Chubais, Yeltsin.
He’s said this elsewhere as well – here is an NPR interview he gave:
Jeffrey Sachs on NPR

SACHS: I was worried about people having food to eat, having social stability, avoiding shooting wars. Who knew? This is one of the biggest events in modern history. Who knew? What you could know is this is very dangerous. And the most important message I gave is the West should help.
ROSALSKY: From the very beginning, Jeff lobbied the West to help Russia. He appeared on TV programs. He wrote op eds. He spoke with leaders. He spoke with lenders. Like, there was this one moment six months into the reform effort when he gave a big speech to the IMF and World Bank.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)
SACHS: And Russia has made clear it will go forward with or without the international financial support. But we know that only with international support from the IMF and the World Bank is success likely in this remarkably arduous process. We really are at a critical juncture, where days and weeks will count.
CHILDS: But Jeff says at this critical juncture, the West did not back Russia’s reforms with serious money. And Jeff says without that support, the crisis got worse. And eventually Yeltsin lost faith in the reformers. He fired his prime minister, a radical reformer who had initially recruited Jeff. Yeltsin replaced him with someone from the old guard, a longtime communist and prominent red director who had been resisting reforms. And then Russian politics got even uglier in 1993. The parliament led an armed revolt against Yeltsin. And in response, Yeltsin sent in the military to dissolve it.
(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)
UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER #7: The Russian parliament burning, sat on fire as the Russian army was called to suppress an armed revolt led by hardline opponents trying to overthrow President Boris Yeltsin.
ROSALSKY: Then Yeltsin held new parliamentary elections. And with the economy in the toilet, the reformers lost big.
SACHS: I saw by the fall this is not going to work. And at that moment I said, OK, I tried and then quit at the end of 1993. That’s my story.

I have little doubt that Sachs can see the difference. In his recent 140 minutes interview with Tucker Carlson,
https://tuckercarlson.com/tucker-show-sachs-2
Sachs made a different point and expressed his hope that Trump and Vance, given their profound knowledge of the background of the Ukraine conflict, will find a way to settle it. For some reasons, Sachs was not willing to openly support Trump in the setting of that other event – I look at it as being shy and wanting to avoid a lengthy discussion.
Here is a similar case for comparison… Remember Putin answering Tucker Carlson’s question as to which candidate he would prefer? He named Joe Biden! Well, that was a lie. He didn’t want to name Trump, knowing how such a statement would hurt Trump’s campaign, making it easier for the Dems to portray him as a Putin stooge.

Maybe it was a lie, but I think Russia wants a highly contentious and blatant steal by Harris, even more blatant and in.your face than 2020.
Its like this: what is worse, losing one dam to Ukrainian shelling, or losing five on the snake river due to internal activism?
Having the nordstream II blown up, or having keystone shut down?
20000 casualties a quarter, or missing recruiting goals by 64,000 a quarter?
That covers the Harris part, the steal part adds to recruit misses, and degrades overall cohesion of the nation, including its aggressive foreign policy.

They didn’t use the term “Deep State.” Jefferson believed (or professed to, he was a slippery politician) in an Anglo-Monarchist conspiracy. Jackson presented himself as the champion of the farmers and mechanics against the rich and well-born, the PMC as Trumpers call it. Just as Trumpers are the party of the ruling class while prattling about the people, so too that was the Democratic Party tradition.
“…Now…the party of backroom deals (which was its traditional profile in America’s big cities, where the Dem Party organized immigrant and other communities into political machines).” This is preposterous. Rural political corruption is incredible, including the kind of corruption where if you’re friends with the local political honcho you can get favors done, even get people off the hook for police charges. From what I can tell rural police are so corrupt as an institution. This is either incredibly naive or incredibly bigoted against those unsavory people who live in cities. *** Pompeo was already on the Trump administration, no war, so to say war is “guaranteed” is hyperbole.***
There *should* have been a war with Britain when Pompeo declared the US would not allow the election / installation of a UK government of which the US Neocons did not approve.
Reason there wasn’t was because the UK political establishment are worse than quisling bastards, while its mainstream mass-media is more zionist than Haaretz.
And in any case, the so-called “British” nuclear ‘deterrent’ is just a bunch of US armaments hiding under a flag of convenience at the expense of the dumbed-down British public.
But there might have been some weapons at Porton Down which could be used against the US dictatorial empire … no more than it would happily do itself …

Some barflies may be senior enough to remember the 1960s TV series The Prisoner starring Patrick McGoohan.
Episode 4 of this series, entitled Free for All features an election in “The Village”; here’s a brief description (copied from my DVD box set of the series…):

It’s election time in the Village. A new Number Two needs to be elected and Number Six is persuaded to stand. While attending a meeting of the outgoing council, Number Six angers Number Two, after which Number Six sets out on his election campaign with many promises to his voters, including promising to reveal who Number One actually is.

Strangely, this episode is not available on U-Tube due to “copyright©”, but other episodes are available…
Oh well…

Sachs is a peacenik, a woosy, sooky Pollyanna, an imperialist ideologue who completely fails to see — through his patriotic tinted glasses — Russia’s pov and that this war/SMO, plus the bigger hegemonic struggle, is a necessary outcome of US proxy wars and financial truculence to play fair on the world stage. As an economist, of course he can’t help but see the dollar as the weapon of global supremacy. He speaks the fluffy words of no-war knowing deep down that his team (the goodies, the bankers) run the show through Wall St and his Red Sea Mates. He has much of his “journey” to travel before truly understanding global equilibrium. This war is but one small part of that.

I was about to point out that Sachs was ignored and had resigned from the official post within a year of getting it. Robert Rubin was the voice of the other Sachs in Clintonville that pushed the extreme neoliberalism. Both as advisor and then as treasury secretary. Larry Summers deserves a dishonorable mention as another Clinton handler who loved the social murder of at least 7 million citizens of the Russian federation in the 90’s.

I shall certainly try to find time to listen to Lavrov’s speech.
I appreciate more background info on Sachs.
I agree with those who peg him as an idealist, which is very close to how I peg him. I am uncomfortable with his association with what looks to me like the full globalist agenda.
I responded to the item that b posted regarding the US election.
That was not acceptable to “james.”
Regarding not casting a vote, I stand by my comments regarding Sachs’s announcement that he would not vote.
I was surprised at how many choices for president and vice president there were on the Mass. ballot—I think six, Dem, Rep., Green, plus three others. Of course in addition there were the local elected state, county, and town reps to vote for, plus our regional planning body commissioner, plus five ballot questions.
As a pretty busy person I do not take orders as to which reading and podcasts to prioritize reading/watching.

Posted by: Jane | Nov 6 2024 1:00 utc | 442

Early info
1) Trump +11 in Miami Dade. This means the Cuban/Colombian/Venezuelan part of the Hispanics are voting significantly for Trump.
2) Trump + in Duvall County, FL. Duvall and the state of Georgia vote in tandem but Georgia votes 2% to 3% more conservative than Duvall. Georgia going Trump by this measure.
3) Trump getting 25% of black men in Georgia and +11% of Independents. More data points.
4) Loudon County, Virginia: Trump down but he has improved 8% vs. 2020. This likely means Virginia is only going to be +2 Harris and that Harris is toast.
There are other signs – every single one points to what I had already said: poor turnout for core Democrat/Harris demographics and Trump improving vs. 2020.

ZH has a posting up with the title
“You Know It’s Serious When Amish Get Involved”
the quote

As Pennsylvania’s polls near closing, an unexpected twist has emerged: a massive mobilization of Amish voters. Known for their separation from mainstream society and reliance on traditional values, such as horse-and-buggy transportation (arguably more ‘green’ than EVs), these folks, traditionally not big participators in US politics, have been out in force at PA polling stations, voting for former President Trump after Biden-Harris’ big gov’t waged war on the community.
Let’s begin with the context. Earlier this year, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and big government Democrats targeted a small Amish farmer in Lancaster over compliance issues. This apparently infuriated the Amish community that many of them registered to vote and voted red in the last several days.
Real America’s Voice’s Tera Dahl was speaking at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania on Monday, and she explained that the Amish community is not a traditional group of voters in US elections.
“But they’re voting this year – and I think a big reason is the overreach of government – and one example that could’ve had a big impact was back in January. An Amish farmer was selling his milk – and the gov’t raided his home and stopped his business,” she said.

Now if that 92K Amish only had enough morals not to vote for Trump but Jill Stein…..its all about the money instead of values/morals…..sigh

@Ed #449

But you do know that many Democrat voters vote early and by mail. Many of those will be counted last. Still, I do expect Florida to go Trump.

The first sentence is correct, but the 2nd one is not. Early votes are generally counted first.
Florida is not only going to go Trump, it is going to be Trump +10 or more.
But the early vote numbers were very negative for Harris.
In Pennsylvania: Biden had an over 1 million early vote lead, the day before the election. Harris was 410K yesterday morning. Remember Biden won Pennsylvania by a total of 80555 votes.
Nevada: the Republicans had a 20K vote lead yesterday.
These trends are consistent across all of the swing states.
Mail-in ballots are down 50% across the country.
So what I noted above is to consideration of the possibility that magical Democrat behavior changes on election day occur. The break of independents, the turnout of “lean Democrat” vs. “lean Republican” – these are the emergent behaviors that govern the final results.
And so far, zero evidence of that. Trump is overperforming 2016 and 2020 in every “swing” or “keystone” county so far. The Rust Belt and South – huge but the very, very early Pennsylvania and Michigan (very early because very little % reporting) is showing less relative Trump strength.

Eric Weinstein (such a great disputor) in an interview with UK Piers Morgan yesterday spoke the 4 options:
Vote Dem.

Vote informal or not at all.
When pressed for his preference/endorsement, Weinstein, a registered lifelong Dem and die hard patriot, said “Well, it certainly won’t be Harris. Sometimes you’ve gotta take a chance on which of two unhygienic restaurants you are gunna eat at”. Sounded like a Trump vote to me, possibly typical of many disillusioned Dems.:)

Posted by: ScoobyDoo | Nov 6 2024 1:58 utc | 457

My humble opinion, for what little it’s worth, is that both camps are stark raving mad. It’s almost as if the whole country is mad, in that all dominant narratives are all but completely disjoint from physical reality (for instance, regarding the readiness of Iranian missiles).
In an individual, when consciousness completely takes leave of reality, it’s called schizophrenia — severe, end-stage psychosis. This is the state of both major parties along with the mainstream media megaphone, as the gap between spin and reality grows ever wider, on all sides, in all dimensions, because this is what it looks like when a great superpower implodes.
Which could be a good thing, so long and the ongoing/impending implosion doesn’t light up the whole planet on its way down. Which of these two psychotics would be less likely to continue or accelerate the current trajectory toward the “war to end all wars”? Your guess is as good as mine.
Most likely our goose (for us US Americans) is thoroughly cooked either way. The fact Cheeto Bandito is already squealing about fraud in Philadelphia looks to me like a strong indication he’s not seeing results which accord with his expectations.

Philly & Chicago get too much credit, imho. San Francisco stands at the very pinnacle of corruption, and has been legendary since well before our own very slick Willie (Kamala’s one-time sugar-daddy, as I recall).
Maybe the one and only positive expectation I have for this election is that Mayor London Breed (another one of Willie’s ingenues, as it happens) will almost certainly lose her seat. Even by San Francisco standards, Breed’s corruption has been breathtaking.

Back in the sixties and seventies, SanFran was the dream of just about everyone. . . not just the hippies. It was often called the most beautiful city in the US, a magical place, home to “Bohemia” and coffee houses and Levi jeans and the Beat generation and the incredible Golden Gate Bridge and Frisco Bay and even Alcatraz and China Town made it exotic. All of the picturesque Victorian houses. It had so much. People streamed there if they could get a foothold. It was the place to be.
Then something happened, I guess.
The Tech companies? AIDS? Migrants? Corrupt city govt?
I am not a SanFran native so I don’t have deep insights, only impressions. It certainly seems to be a mess now. Not sure this is the same as historically deeply entrenched corruption of eastern cities such as Philly. Especially the latter’s genteel, stately Colonial veneer made the reality seem that much worse.

I am in bed and haven’t stripped from a day’s work. Turned on the election coverage. Went to make myself a quick quesadilla with leftover Mexican rice and canned refried beans. I thought about just not heating the beans and rice. But I did shred the cheese.
I ended up burning one side of the quesadilla which would not have happened had I not gotten rid of my quesadilla maker. It happened because I had to run to the bathroom because my Crohn’s disease is acting up and I had to get out a paltry though explosive BM. My toilet bowl doesn’t look too good but I did invest in a bidet so I could avoid having to replenish my underwear stock early.
I took my charred quesadilla and cut it into fourths, not sixths, out of laziness and brought it back into the bedroom, my dog with a skin condition following at my heels.
I rested on the bed and began to feed myself one of the fourths, holding my phone up to my face with Fox news on just beyond my phone screen. Beautiful lips and blonde hair abound. I drip grease on my sweatshirt but luckily it was just on the zipper portion which I quickly rubbed in and then licked my fingers.
My intestines are constantly squeaking at me and it won’t be long until I have to visit the toilet again.
I also have a Sibo issue right now that is keeping my family away from me because of the sulphuric gas. My dog lays next to me because he does not mind the expulsion and in fact has never left and is often curious about the smell. He lays down next to me and sighs deeply. He lifts his head up and stretches it to his rear leg to bite the itch.
“Stop it Teddy!.”
*farts*
He looks at me and gets up and smells near my crotch.
“Donald Trump is over 200 electoral now,” one of the nice-lipped blondes declares.
A little while later, Hannity unironically claims that “Legacy Media is Dead!” On a Fox News Broadcast.
I bring another fourth of quesadilla up to my chin, holding my plate just underneath to help with the grease. I masticate as my dog licks himself and moves to bite his itchy spot again. I have tried to treat it, but he is very aggressive and reactive and has known triggers.
He’s drawn blood several times if I catch him at the wrong moment trying to dry his paws near the back door.
I belch and adjust my body as I am getting over a cold and my body aches.
What a country. What a day. What lips!

Trump is starting to pull far ahead of Kamala, he could win over 330 electoral college votes and the popular vote. at 10:31 he’s at 83% likelihood to win on the NY times ticker. I am also convinced that Donald Trump is a good person at heart.
There is this touching story about Donald Trump that a New Yorker posted on Facebook in 2016:
Donald Trump looks down from a skyscraper into a park at an ice skating rink in the winter and sees people fall a lot. He goes down and looks at the facility and realizes that the ice rink is broken and dilapidated.
Donald Trump immediately opens his wallet and has a new ice rink built at his own expense for the citizens of New York.

Not cheap but works fast and fantastic. Better health to you both!

I have no opinion on whether he should win or lose, but I find it mind boggling that a guy who was impeached twice, roundly denounced by the media constantly, and called a “threat to democracy” is even able to run for president, let alone likely to win it.
It shows the public’s level of cynicism with respect to the political establishment, and I think the powers that be really need to take a long, hard look at the idea of their legitimacy in the eyes of the common citizen. This issue is just not getting the attention it deserves

“New Evidence Emerges that Trump Ruthlessly Beat Two Women Over the last 8 Years just to Advance his own Career”

Looks like Trump is winning, including the popular vote.
This will always happen so long as the Democratic party refuses to support the working class and continue to court “liberal” Republicans.
Sanders could have beaten Trump 8 years ago, and we would have been spared this horror. But the “democratic” party couldn’t let that happen. Nooooooo.
So here we are.

So it looks like the republicans are winning.

Nah–that was the Russians, working in concert with the North Koreans, the Iraqis, the Iranians, and the Chinese

Have you tried the “Animal” version of Ballistol for his skin irritation?
It doesn’t sting. Works on people as well.

Goes to show: Supporting a genocide and a quasi-genocidal war on Slavs in Russia and Ukraine has domestic political consequences.
There are many other reasons of course.
>Kamala is a cypher who never won a single primary in 2020, chosen by the Royal Court as part of a palace coup worthy of Shakespeare or The Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones).
>The Corporate Demos abandoned the working class in 90% of the ways available to support them/us and rather than take previous election results as a bellwether or “learning moment”, doubled down and gaslit us while raking in billions from the oligarchical 0.01% they used to serve as a bulwark against and making the most minimal attempts to use their power when they had it to do something positive. This goes back to Carter, but really Clinton. Instead they blamed Russia and Bernie.
>The Corporate Demos abandoned class politics in favor of idpol and divide-and-rule propaganda, when not caving into the Rethugs’ constantly morphing Culture War bugbears.
>The Corporate Demos who claimed to be anti-war, anti-state surveillance during the Bush/Cheney years turned around and embraced them whole-heartedly. This was something that Obama’s massive marketing/PR team and carefully crafted image (and Biden by way of Trump fatigue and TDS) were capable of overcoming, but not Koup Kamala.
>The Corporate Demo liberals/neoliberals said “fuck you” to the left and scolded us for daring to try pushing them back in their previous populist class conscious direction while they floundered and played games in the face of Rethug idpol/CW BS and scolded us every step of the way to vote LOTE rather than with our consciences.
>The Corporate Demos pretended to care about abortion or women’s reproductive rights for decades while in power and then cynically allowed Roe to be overturned via multiple channels including RBG’s refusal to retire, Obama’s refusal to fight for his SCOTUS pick, and their general refusal to codify those rights in states or at the national level while they greedily and disingenuously hoarded the political capital from attacks on abortion and the overturning of Roe for future use in political campaigns to do more of the above-same.
Now let’s get the popcorn ready for the next iteration of the Blame Game played by America’s “elites” whenever things don’t go their way. First it was Russiagate, then it was Stop-the-Steal, and now it’s gonna be……

Obama should complain about discrimination in the election to the PTB. They are willing to steal the election for a White guy, but nothing for poor Kamala.

Posted by: Featherless | Nov 6 2024 5:35 utc | 490
Trump *will* win. I supported the Dims in their protestations of 2000 and 2004, and was likely right and correct to do so, despite not loving either of the tickets they put forth (Gore and Kerry) even though they would’ve been better than Bush/Cheney (who..GAG! The Kamala Dems have embraced and forgiven! LOL).
But yeah, the American financial elites along with their courtiers in both parties (including the Trump wing of the GOP) are petulant children incapable of acknowledging their own flaws and both sides would rather put out (laughably amateur) focus-grouped or primed PR narratives whenever things don’t go their way domestically. I should note, this is no different than in foreign policy. When the person that US elites doesn’t win an election in some country that hasn’t already bent over in service to western financial and resource extraction elites, they cry foul and claim vote rigging and corruption (then of course coups, regime change wars and/or sanctions). IT’s the same script at home as it is abroad, and most people are too fucking stupid – or too busy trying to put food on the table in this capitalist dystopia – to recognize it. Morons like c1ue will claim to understand and empathize with the working class through the typical lens of “trickle down economics” and “a rising tide floats all boats” bullshit. If only the markets were “FREER”!!!
But I digress. The Dumbocrats are both a pathetic joke and a cleverly crafted disguise for a certain faction of the plutocratic elite that doesn’t care one way or the other which nominal “oppositional” party in the Red-Blue spectrum wins the national elections. And when one or the other side loses, the moneyed elites who own them sit back and sip expensive bourbon and champagne while their idiotic water carriers among the rest of us plebes (to include the “personalities” on-air and writing for the “legacy” media) fight amongst one another over why this guy or that gal is bad, evil, the wrong person for the job, and anything else along those lines.
Now to the thread: I know that geopolitical realities are much different than they were in 2019/2020, but some of you may or may not recall I predicted that if Trump had won in 2020 we’d have had a major war of some kind on Iran. A ground war would be foolish even then, and now Russia has stepped up and started taking Iran’s security seriously. So what does everyone think happens in a slightly postponed 2nd Trump term vis-a-vis Iran and West Asia in general? I’m not even in a place yet where I’m comfortable making predictions, but I can tell you that Trump has been campaigning with none other than Mike fuckin’ Pompeo in the last week or so, and that doesn’t bode well to me…

Friend, the war has been going on for a few years now. America has been massacring Palestinians directly since Oct 8th last year and now has decided to start genociding the Lebanese, while Russia fights American troops in Kursk.
The war is already here.
No worries, the Axis will finish it regardless of who “wins”.
As Putin has said, American Presidents are not reliable partners.

386 steventjohnson. . “As to political tactics and strategy about the best way to organize, I can’t pretend to be authoritative.”
I have been wondering since I read “The Purity Fetish and the Crisis of Western Marxism” by Carlos L. Garrido, a book you mentioned on MoA sometime back that you had reviewed, about the author’s assertion that direct action (ex. demonstrations and marches, etc.) have very little impact. On the contrary, I have believed that the Occupy and the demonstrations for George Floyd, for example, were educative for the mostly younger people involved; for one thing the speeches and sharing of opinions opened the eyes of many (also the extremely heavy response of the police in this huge city where I live which had legal ramifications for years afterwards for both the city and the demonstrators, mostly after the George Floyd protests). Regarding Occupy, a Marxist I knew wrote that Occupy’s strength and failure was the lack of a unifying organizational ??
At this point I will explain that this question arose for me again recently in a ‘No Vote for Genocide’ march I took part in; my post here is indeed on topic. The very vocal march of a couple hundred wove through the business district and stopped at the city’s main art museum for (more) speeches then back through the streets to the originating spot — over a mile. But, since it took place on a Saturday, I noticed there were few people on the streets until it arrived at the art museum. Nothing like the 1000’s that were out day after day for George Floyd.
Garrido uses his dismissal of this kind of action as a foil perhaps, for building his argument that the Left must privilege the specific movements and occurrences in US history which were revolutionary at the time and must be recognized by the weakened Left to help us find our roots (such a cliche lately perhaps) and revitalize. There is a history of Resistance and independent thought in our American experience that cannot be thrown out like the proverbial baby in the bath water.
Garrido says direct action has produced no change, and I wondered if he is right on this recent March Against Genocide. However, it’s not over yet.
Do you have an opinion on Garriso’s position on this?

No comment on anything in your post other than the notion that direct action has a real impact on mass politics or policies in the US.

What we do may matter on a local, or possibly even state level (the latter decreases by the day with the massive amounts of money now allowed in electoral politics) – but it’s an uphill and eventually losing battle at this pace and trajectory.
