Ukraine - Russian Missile Strike Hits Swedish Instructors

A Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian Military Institute of Communications in Poltava has at least killed 41 and wounded two hundreds. Other sources claim higher numbers.

Poltava is about 120 kilometer from the Russian border. The warning times after the missile launch was allegedly too short for everyone to reach the bunkers.

The Institute of Communications is training radio and radar operators. Its main multi-story building has been completely destroyed.

Britta Ellwanger, a (former?) Swedish volunteer with the Ukrainian army wrote that Swedish friends of hers, also volunteering with the Ukrainian army, were among those who died in the strike.

bigger

Sweden had promised to gift two Swedish AWACS planes to Ukraine:

Sweden has announced sending its Saab 340B AEW&C (Airborne Early Warning and Control) aircraft to Kyiv, as per an announcement made by its defense ministry on May 29, 2024.

Given the nature of the Institute of Communications in Poltava it is likely that the Swedes were training Ukrainian operators for those.

One wonders why the training was not held elsewhere.

The Swedes should have remembered the history of that city:

The Battle of Poltava[e] (8 July 1709) was the decisive and largest battle of the Great Northern War. The Russian army under the command of Tsar Peter I defeated the Swedish army under the command of Carl Gustaf Rehnskiöld. The battle put an end to the status of the Swedish Empire as a European great power, as well as its eastbound expansion, and marked the beginning of Russian supremacy in eastern Europe.

Swedish and NATO attempts to change that status of Russia in eastern Europe more than 300 years after it had been achieved has ended in failure.

According to the results released by the Russian Central Election Commission through its sections in the DPR and the LPR, 99.23% (2,116,800 voters) supported the annexation in Donetsk and 98.42% (1,636,302 voters) in Luhansk. The turnouts were 97.51% (2,131,207 voters) and 94.15% (1,662,607 voters), respectively.

Co-opted politicians, that's how you make serious changes without asking the population.

In normal times no country would enter nato without a serious discussion, now it is presented as a fait accompli .

Same goes for wars , etc.

Change the government until you get the one who'll do your bidding and then lock in a situation hard to reverse.

The west is determined to win the war. Or they want to force Russia to use the nuclear weapons.

WASHINGTON, Sept 3 (Reuters) - The U.S. is close to an agreement to give Ukraine long-range cruise missiles that could reach deep into Russia, but Kyiv would need to wait several months as the U.S. works through technical issues ahead of any shipment, U.S. officials said.

Ask yourself if you can win a war postponing critical decision for several month.

The window of opportunity, if it ever existed, for the west to win the war was before the 2023 Ukraine counteroffensive with afu at their maximum strength manpower+weapons.

They didn't or couldn't act on the opportunity and now they are in a worst position.

"[W]hy the training was not held elsewhere?"

That's a very sensible question since so many training centers become targets thanks to intel developed by Russians. Show up at a hotel for a meeting and before the meeting ends the hotel gets flattened. I'll bet humint provided the details for this specific strike. And with Iskander production increased, they are being used almost daily; the direct hits on solitary Himars are impressive.

This event is yet further evidence that Russia is at war with NATO. Supposedly, the reason given for US refusal of permission for Ukraine to launch deeper strikes into Russia is that Russia in turn will target Ukraine's deep rear which is located in other nations--Poland and Romania most specifically--and thus enlarge the war which NATO can't win. And we should be clear about the status of NATO troops within Ukraine--they're NATO troops, not mercs, and Russia's keen to eliminate them.

Ukrainian sources report 200 'military students' dead in Poltava, which could imply several hundred more wounded. That is a jackpot for RUAF, which could also be sufficient to put a dent on future plans, whether it is continuation of the Kursk offensive, defending Pokrovsk, a new attack from Orekhov or something else.

Several other targets were hit last night as well, including the Grand Palace hotel in Zaporozhye and something in Dnipro, no doubt housing more foreign mercs.

The latest estimates on the Pokrovsk attack put the losses at 600 - reported by a Ukrainian Rada deputy so probably still an underestimate. Some possibilities that there were specialist Swedish instructors there for the Swedish AWACS that are planned to be supplied to Ukraine.

Dima noted that the Russian production of Iskander has ramped up and allowed them to be deployed to lower echelon levels, at the artillery brigade level with launch approval made at the tactical level. This reduces the time between a target identified and an Iskander launched, and increases the possible number of targets. The Ukrainian rear areas near the front now become much more vulnerable to such strikes, making it harder for the Ukrainians to concentrate forces.

Sweet irony post the Swedes getting their asses whopped by Peter the Great, features the defeated Svensker King Karl den Tolvte (Charles the Twelfth) some few years after he managed with part of his staff to escape the debacle into fairly nearby Turkish territory in their then portion of what is now called Ukraine.

From his stay in Istanbul, the Swedish king made it back to Stockholm. He refused to halt his imperialist/colonialist land-grabbing ambitions and assaulted Norway in an attack on their Danish developed fortress town of Fredericksburg. Leading from the front, as was his wont, Konung Karl XII met his Waterloo, almost exactly a hundred from the more famous one in 1815...at the hands of a Norwegian sniper.

Upon Karl's demise, it was not improbable that the Swedish forces breathed a sigh of relief and retreated back to their own lands. Thus, the final curtain-call for Sweden as a European great power. In general, Swedes are not so stubborn as to get their heads knocked more than twice in order to come to their senses. However, currently being ruled by their long corrupted "Nobility" and a handful of hyper-wealthy industrialist clans...the Svenskers gave up their storied neutrality and jumped into the maelstrom of NATO insanity...along with the usually more sensible Finns.

Never did I realize that the Swedish educational system is nearly as corrupted as the one here in the $tates. Apparently their history curriculum is such that they do not perceive the lessons of their own national history...oh well, it has been over 300 years and Swedes are considered even here in my northern Minnesota county, one with quite the Scandihoovian blend of original settlers; that Swedes have a reputation of being stubbornly stoopid.

Now that I have included the Kursk front in the Ukrainian loss numbers it becomes obvious where all the tanks, IFV, APC, light armoured vehicles, MLRS etc. went. Now even the Kursk front is short of such things. Zelensky seems desperate to keep the incursion going for propaganda reasons (400 more Ukrainian casualties there in the latest report), and also on the hope that some Western nation will allow him to strike deep into Russia (a massive red line that could then lead to strikes on Poland, Romania etc.). The neocons seem to be slowly moving the dial on this one in the US, more and more desperate to escalate as Ukraine gives way.

Now including Kursk front losses, Ukrainian losses for September 3rd, as reported by the Russian defence ministry. This does not include losses away from the front line, for example the hit on the Pokrovsk concentration of forces:

- Russia Kursk front: 400 troops, 12 LAV/HMV, 12 motor vehicles, 3 artillery pieces, 1 MLRS, 1 EW system

- Sever Group (Kharkov): 150 troops, 1 tank, 1 LAV/HMV, 3 motor vehicles, 1 MLRS.

- Zapad Group (Luhansk area): 450 troops, 2 motor vehicles, 4 artillery pieces.

- Yug Group (Donetsk north): 710 troops, 6 motor vehicles, 4 artillery pieces, 1 EW system.

- Tsetr Group (Donetsk south): 490 troops, 4 LAV/ HMV, 3 motor vehicles, 2 artillery pieces.

- Vostok Group (southern front): 150 troops, 3 motor vehicles, 2 artillery piece.

- Dnepr Group: 60 troops, 2 motor vehicles, 1 artillery piece.

In total: 2,410 troops (about 2,500 to 3,000 with undercounting: 75,000 to 90,000 a month). Above average.

1 tank, 17 HMV/Light Armoured Vehicle (12 in Kursk), 31 motor vehicles (12 in Kursk). Further evidence of the transformation of the Ukrainians to an infantry using HMV/light armoured vehicles, “technicals” (pickup trucks with mounted weapons), and civilian vehicles for mobility. Even becoming true in the Kursk front, the Ukrainian reserves of armoured vehicles now seem to be very significantly spent.

2 MLRS (1 in Kursk), 16 artillery pieces (3 in Kursk), below average, at a rate of about 500 a month. 2 EW systems (1 in Kursk). These are still catastrophic daily loss levels of such valuable systems, but also point to a depletion of Ukrainian artillery and specialist systems.

Total losses so far for the Ukrainians in the Kursk front have been 9,300 troops, 80 tanks, 38 IFV, 70 APC, 561 LAV/HMV, 273 motor vehicles, 68 artillery pieces, 20 MLRS, 17 EW systems, 7 counter-battery systems

In addition, the Russians have become adept at shooting down and jamming Ukrainian (i.e. Western manufactured) guided bombs, missiles, rockets and the mostly locally-made drones. It has been noted in the Pokrovsk area that Russian drones seem to be able to operate with little EW interference. The rate at which the Russians are destroying the Ukrainians EW systems is extremely high.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, the increasing numbers of himars being hit is a result of that improvement. Many months ago, I opined Russia needed to increase and deepen its drone surveillance with them tied to specific artillery/rocket units so once a target was discovered it could be attacked very swiftly. That sort of improvement has clearly occurred. However, IMO given the intel, the Poltava hit was done using two missiles fired by a unit at a higher command level. Of course, that doesn't matter to those on the receiving end. I thought the message was made clear last year that no place in Ukraine is safe enough to gather large concentrations of people in the rear; they are far too easy to spot and target.

“Big trouble”, “more than a hundred corpses”: attack on Ukrainian Armed Forces formation, many dead

▪️"In Poltava, I believe, there are more than a hundred corpses. Arrivals both in formation and in the canteen. There is just a mess there.

▪️179th training center of the communications troops (military unit A3990) in Poltava, 44 Zinkivska Street.

▪️How soldiers are deliberately set up, and this despite the fact that there are no people at the front,” wrote Ukrainian journalist A. Shariy.

▪️"A big problem," commented military communications specialist of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Sergei Flesh.

In addition to a large number of Ukrainian Armed Forces servicemen, several foreign instructors from Sweden were killed during the missile strike on the communications training center in Poltava.

This was stated by Britta Ellwanger, a foreign volunteer working in the interests of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and studying with the deceased instructor at one of the Swedish universities.

Let us recall that it was Sweden that planned to supply two ASC 890 AWACS aircraft, the training of whose onboard personnel corresponds to the profile of the training center.

The missile strike in Poltava took on new colours.

german nazi-outlet welt.de:

According to Russian military bloggers, the attack targeted the city's military training center. According to Selenskyj, “an educational institution and a neighboring hospital” in Poltava were hit by two missiles. “A building of the Institute of Communications was partially destroyed,” Selenskyj explained on Telegram. Several people were buried.

What did they think would happen - they created a juicy target for the RF, and the RF, struck at the heart of it - the Neo-Nazi regime running Ukraine - would've done the exact same thing, if the shoe had been on the other foot - as they saying goes.

Media reports in UK - claiming hundreds died in the strike - maybe, for once - they are telling the truth.

‼️🇷🇺💥🇸🇪🏴‍☠️🇺🇦 There is information that among the destroyed Ukrainian military there are several Swedish instructors. They presumably arrived to train Ukrainian military personnel to operate the ASC 890 AWACS aircraft, which Sweden planned to transfer to Ukraine. Aircraft of this type are a simplified analogue of the Russian A-50 and American AWACS, with their help long-range target designation and reconnaissance are carried out.

‼️🇷🇺💥🇸🇪🏴‍☠️ This information has not yet been confirmed, but if the Swedes really did get hit near Poltava, then the symbolism of the blow is simply amazing 😁

"...wtf, okay, guys, yeah, I know, the Russians knew the Swedes would be there in 2 1/2 years, like a cat in the night, they waited."

You don't think Russian intelligence tracks the movement of mercenaries and foreign military instructors on UKR territory? I don't find it implausible that Swedish military men were on premises.

It also makes sense that Russia would take the occasion to send a message to Stockholm, given that US/NATO is about to clear Kiev to use long-range missiles against Russia.

A year ago I guesstimated ~50,000 sheep dipped NATO were fighting in the Ukrainian Civil War. (Thanks Ed4 for reminding me)

Suspect it’s now at least 100,000 sheep dipped NATO .

Posted by: Exile | Sep 3 2024 15:26 utc | 16

I'm choosing to comment both at the same time because each "student" down means an aditional high end nato soldier sheep dipped and sent to what is now a meat grinder on turbo (each month is worth 6 months in the first year).

Add the losses on EW and artillery and the risk for those specialists is magnitude(s?) greater than in 2022. At least one magnitude just because of added destruction, probably a second because of having to replace whatever AFU resources are no longer significant, and perhaps even a third for Putin's willingnes to hunt them down hard now.

What could be covered up when talking about one here, another there, evey so often, becomes a different game when it's in the hundreds or thousands. How long before it becomes a problem in the west is one of the big questions for the next months.

Let's take the radar school, if there were low hundreds 200s and high hundreds 300s, then let us settle for a round 1.000 seriously hit. If it was neither a crowded nor a small class, let's say that for every 20 one was a teacher, let us also assume that they were all nato teachers as possible AFU teachers are few and badly needed maning their equipments.

So out of those 1.000, at least 50 were nato, 10 were KIA, no fewer than 10 will be horribly maimed (even a bigger problem when they get home), and 30 will eventually be repaired but will be in western hospitals for a while.

Now for the problem, the local 950... assuming that there was at least a 50%+ approval ratio (and I fear you'd have to be really bad for them to flunk you) means 500 nato (10x as many who were hit as teachers) will have to go man the systems closer to the front line.

So next time it's 500 being hit at the front... along the new 50 in the new school

There are a large number of US Airmen from WW II buried in Sweden. When their aircraft got damaged many made for Sweden where they landed and were incarcerated for the duration. The dead were buried. Allied brass thought it was some airmens way to get out of the war. It was suspected that some aircrews abandoned their mission and made for Sweden.

I think most crews made for Sweden based on battle damage. There is an excellent audio of Hitler complaining to the Swedish PM about Kursk. He was complaining about the endless supply of T-34's. I cannot find it now but its out there somewhere.

With all that being said. You would think these idiots would be tired of their endless war.

All UKR and RU TG and social media channels are moderated by their governments, they all signed agreements to such moderation, so I'm suspicious of critiques, RU controls seem to be more lenient, I doubt the UKR ones are.

It looks like enemy missiles were stupidly launched because the coordinates of the military units were stupidly posted in Russian public pages.

Blame some anonymous tech, my suspicion is that the above crap is generated by the Kiev govt. to distract from the obvious, of collapsing internal security in the AFU, sane people in the AFU, and probably NATO and European militaries, are more and more helping the Russians to quickly end the neocon madness. It's not just spiraling downward ever faster on the battlefield but on the home front and behind the scenes of power.

The command is to blame! - up to 600 wounded and killed from the attack on the Ukrainian Armed Forces formation in Poltava, - former Rada deputy Mosiychuk

"There are a lot of victims, up to 600, and dozens of dead.
The city's hospitals are overcrowded.

It looks like enemy missiles were stupidly launched because the coordinates of the military units were stupidly posted in Russian public pages.

At the same time, this does not at all relieve the military leadership from responsibility for allowing such a significant accumulation of personnel!

We expect the SBU counterintelligence to quickly detain both the enemy missile gunners and our military commanders who are guilty of the tragedy!"

Its really amazing how arrogant NATO is in Ukraine-Russian War......they act with stupidity and with impunity too.

How really dumb is it operate a training school packed full and students and NATO mercenaries only 120klicks from the Russian border? And then openly parade the troops daily in front of the chow hall!

The NATO funded, directed and operated last ditch attack on Mother Russia has really lifted any and all self imposed RF constraints......anything anywhere in the Ukraine of military or infrastructure value is now fair game.......especially since NATO has now sent the mercs into Russia itself. Next up, the Port of Odessa reduced to rubble and the RN mercs with it.

Any US transfer of long range missiles to the Ukronazi forces will also mean that the Polish and Romania bases and supply depots will also be fair game.....this strike today is fair warning......(anyway the US transfer is not likely with the upcoming election for POTUS, unless the Biden/Harris/Obama/Soros regime in DC wants to box Trump in, in anticipation of his election. Trump is not in favor of any escalation on behalf of Volo that is for sure, especially after Volo and the Vindman twins attempted to get him impeached. Trump detests Volo. Trump's election means the end of the US welfare payments to the Ukronazis).

By the way those 890 Swedist AWACS would have a life span of about the same length as the F-16's, roughly ten minutes in the air before RF AA eliminates them. More NATO junk for the scrap dealers.

It is useful to remember that Swedes or any EUroNATO state for that matter decides nothing regarding Ukraine for themselves. The only reason they haven't sent Grippens is because Jake Sullivan or Biden's handlers didn't tell them to do so.

A practical matter sending Grippen fighters may also be that Nato has been unable to create a permanent base capable of arming missiles in Ukraine. So there just isn't any place to base them.

This is also why we have no evidence of usage of F-16 in combat duty, despite Zelensky's claim.

Grippens are among the lightest, lowest-performance and least combat-worthy fighter planes going. Of course the Swedes hype them as being super-duper effective even so, but that's mostly just bluster. Saab should have stuck to making cars.

Mario @ 42

Often women are more belligerants than men. Women in power positions, in corporates, are often hatred both from men and women but more by the women.

Remember that sexual rolls are defined by economic structure, historical materialism and such, the roll of men and women in our society has be crafted by over three centuries of capitalism and now unhinged neoliberal capitalism.

Women in power sometimes engender hatred because it's not innate but the opposite, it goes against their better nature and yes women have one. Women have been moving into these male defined jobs for only half a century and they are still mostly male and male defined, women still feel they must prove themselves in a male environment and act manly or worse over act. It's why at an airport, boarder crossing, confronting cops, etc I learned to always head for the man over the women, always.

I'm with John Perkins (Confessions of an Economic Hit Man) on this, women are on earth to act as a counterbalance to men, an opposing logic, and opposing force, an opposing nature, to fill out the debate not to jump on the same side of the scale as the men, especially since men tend to rush wantonly into disaster after disaster. Perkins became acutely aware IIRC living with Peruvian tribes or something similar, that when the males got some seriously dangerous idiocy into their heads, like a quick and easy attack on a neighboring tribe, the women organized a sex boycott which quickly brought them to their senses. Reminds me of bonobos 🙃

Maybe sexist on my part, but men and women should have exactly equal rights and opportunities but not exactly equal rolls or functions in society. It'll take much time to work itself out where the best of both genders is expressed and rewarded, but the woke way we are going it'll take forever if we don't go extinct first.
