I don’t attribute any thought to (Western) governments and politicians. It is painfully obvious that Macron has less agency than de Gaulle (or even Mitterand) and Scholz has less than Brandt (or even Kohl). I understand that the current crop of successful leaders are carefully groomed to (a) look good and (b) follow orders. Marin, Trudeau, Ardern, the list is long.
But that only defers the problem: *someone* is making decisions about war/peace. There is at least a national element in those decisions because it’ll be the British military involved, for example.
There is a common saying: Don’t attribute to malice what can be attributed to stupidity. It has its place but in *private life*, for neighbours, colleagues, family. IMO it is opposite for large systems, like companies, NGOs, countries. We should assume the enemy is immoral and capable of anything. We should not assume the enemy is stupid, that’s just lazy.
