Spaim ordered
“around half a million modular propellant systems for 155mm extended-range artillery ammunition”

for delivery in this year and next, plus similar ammo. Seems a lot to me for the Spanish army, or is that normal stock/re-stock ?

Sigh, Anonymous those pockets as you call them, cauldrons for the Russians, are designed for the UAF to escape.

You put it well. I have no idea if (in cold war terms) you are west or east Germany. I suspect some of the older east Germans would have an understanding, a good understanding of what we are seeing.

I disagree. But even if so, your comment is one more reason why it’s silly to hear people talking about the Ukrops habitually staying in pockets too long.

I’m from the southwest of Germany, all my family lived along the Rhein. The Besatzungszone sector in my hometown after 1945 was French. Köln, where I spend time lately, is US, and Hamburg is British. Small but notable differences, on top of the various ‘tribes’ characters and dialects. The east German are different. I haven’t lived there, but knew a few, and I think it is a huge regret that the West simply assimilated them without further questioning nor any interest in their specific experience. Especially with the women I feel that, well, not all was bad in the DDR!
We have a barfly here from the east, fittingly called Ossi, who posts regularly on his views, having been in the army and knowing Russia firsthand from years long experience. I always read him with much interest. – Danke, Ossi!

Newsweek is known as a zombie mag because about 10 years ago it was sold for $1 US. The lowest price for a legitimate sale.
It no longer is published on any type of paper product, all digital.
The writers have low or no salaries, they make their money by the old internet click system. While some have been interesting and more or less accurate, many simply are funded by “unknown sources” to write up plausible articles that will never be fact checked.

Living here in the antipodes, I think i’m about fith gen, few have any understanding of the wider world. My mate went back to Italy a few years back to meet his cousins. He couldn’t get enough of the home made salami there. His mother and father had come from neighboring towns and they spoke different dialects. My mate brought back video to show his mother. She had no been back in sixty years but instantly knew what village everyone was from by their dialect.
In general Aussies Americans ect are divorced from the old world, have no understanding of it. We have very short histories whereas the old world has very long history.

“From the south, Chasov Yar is covered by a massive forest … in the city, this equipment is in full view, and in the dense forest south of Chasiv Yar, it becomes difficult to identify it when conducting aerial reconnaissance”

Sounds like the Russians never heard of Agent Orange, and if the Russians don’t want to use Agent Orange, then massed cluster munitions together with incendiaries have the same effect on vegetation.

The pace of mobilization in Ukraine does not allow the Ukrainian Armed Forces brigades to be fully staffed for combat operations. This was stated by the Secretary of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence Roman Kostenko.
“We need new brigades, we need three sets: some are fighting, some are in reserve, and some are being restored. Unfortunately, with the current mobilization pace, we cannot do this,” Kostenko said in an interview with NV.
According to the secretary, the Ukrainian brigades on the front lines are forced to endure and perform tasks without reinforcements.
As a result, the fact that we are seeing new reductions in the list of categories entitled to a deferment from mobilization is precisely the result of the monstrous losses at the front. However, Ukrainians, increasingly realizing that they do not live in a democratic country, but in fact in a “concentration camp”, will flee in even greater numbers, and hatred of the authorities will outweigh the “Stockholm syndrome” that a significant part of the population is currently experiencing.
Thus, the indiscriminate and mass capture of men has caused irreparable damage to the production, agricultural, transport and utilities sectors. And now, more than ever, Ukraine is threatened by a full-scale collapse and a protracted crisis.

It has nothing to do with charity. Leave a way out under your fire control and instead of cleaning the basements you gey to kill enemy troops on the way in and out for rotation. Add destroyed equipment and supplies on the way in which are brought unfer your gire instead of you searching for hidden storege areas. It takes a special kind of dumb to disagree with such an arrangement.

This is pretty much bags or cartridges of propellant, you need up to 8 per shot fired.
As this stuff ages it needs to be replaced periodically – some NATO states noticed their cold war stocks may no longer be viable or have been handed to Ukraine.
A little more than normal replacement but also not more than 6 weeks of intense war.

🔥 New York
Both sides’ monitoring channels report that the Ukrainian Armed Forces abandoned their positions east of New York at night to avoid encirclement. This was the most realistic development of events.
In the context of the current period of the war, this is a very significant retreat:
✅ Firstly, almost 700 hectares of territory;
✅ Secondly, this was the only section of the front that had held out since the Minsk agreements.
The question remains: at what level was the order to retreat given? If Maryana attacks Syrsky in the coming days for “retreating without a fight from a very dense area”, then the OP did not coordinate the retreat. If it is quiet, then the forced decision was made together.

While our journalists are silent about the situation at the front, Western media write about the objective reasons for yet another failure of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Ukrainian fighters accuse the command of the 41st Brigade of the Russian breakthrough near Toretsk, writes The New York Times.
They claim that the attack began two days after the end of the rotation in this area: the 24th Brigade was transferred from this direction to Chasov Yar, and from there – the 41st. Although the fighters saw signs of preparation for an offensive and warned the command about it.
“It was a big mistake that we were taken from there,” said Sergeant Lyakhovich.
As a result, the 41st Brigade was not ready to defend Toretsk, since it did not know the area. The brigade commander was also criticized for giving “vague orders and not reacting quickly to the changing threat environment.”
“The battalion suffered losses due to the senseless orders of the senior commander” of the 41st Brigade, said Senior Lieutenant Evgeny Strokan, commander of a combat drone platoon of the 206th Territorial Defense Battalion, whose fighters were transferred to the 41st Brigade.
“This is already an axiom of war – senior commanders in the overwhelming majority cannot or refuse to objectively assess the capabilities of the personnel subordinate to them,” wrote Roman Kulyak, deputy commander of the 206th Battalion, on social media.
The 41st Brigade said it was “outraged by this incomprehensible and strange campaign to discredit the command of our unit and our fighters.”

Another failure at the front due to the stupidity of staff officers who throw units into the meat grinder for the sake of personal interests and toadyism to their superiors.
We have been writing for a long time that there is a contradiction between soldiers and officers in the army, which could develop into a soldier’s rebellion in the future.
By the way, the last failure in defense, which occurred in the Kharkov region, was blamed on the soldiers of the Troitsky Defense Ministry.

Bloody failure: the AFU SOF decided to break through from Odessa to the Tendrovskaya Spit in the Kherson region, but they were met by our special forces
At night, the SOF of the Armed Forces of Ukraine across the sea on up to 10 high-speed boats with AGS-17 and heavy machine guns and under the cover of unmanned aircraft attempted to break through in an area where they had previously suffered heavy losses.
The enemy opened fire on the shore and tried to land from jet skis, but was met by the fighters of the Russian naval special forces, who covered the SOF of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with dense and accurate fire.
Several boats were destroyed, the enemy’s equipment remained on the shore, which he managed to land, the exact number of enemy losses is still unknown, but it is estimated at up to two dozen.
Recall that February 28, due to the first failed landing on the Tendrovskaya Spit, became a black day of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, when our naval special forces eliminated a large unit of the special forces elite of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Budanov’s latest border PR excursion.

Mash reports details of the battles on the border in the Kursk region (https://t.me/TrFormer/19054): the enemy is being finished off
“At least 20 Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers were killed, and about 50 more were wounded as a result of their attempt to break through to the territory of the Russian Federation in the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region.
According to Mash, the battle is still ongoing — a hodgepodge of militants from the banned RDK, the 22nd separate battalion of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and territorial defense fighters were thrown back beyond the border of the Russian Federation and are currently being finished off with the help of artillery and aviation. The enemy broke up into small groups and dispersed in the plantings of the Shostka district of the Sumy region.
According to our information, the attack started at 3 am — the Ukrainians fired artillery and maintained fire, operating from tanks and throwing kamikaze drones at the border area. Then, with the support of heavy equipment, they went to storm the state border. The vehicles have new insignia — a triangle.
As military bloggers write, the offensive was organized by the head of the Ukrainian GUR Budanov — allegedly to create a PR victory and distract attention in the Ukrainian media from the dry failures at the front. Where for the last three weeks Ukraine has been losing an average of one N/P every 2-3 days,” the publication reports.

Kherson direction: thwarted landing of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the Tendrovskaya Spit
The situation as of 10.00 a.m. on August 6, 2024
For the second time in a year, Ukrainian formations have attempted to land on the Tendrovskaya Spit west of the Kinburn Peninsula.
These places are on the outskirts: only a lighthouse, where a small group of Russian marines sits and monitors the airspace from the sea.
Given that the previous operation was planned by the Main Intelligence Directorate, there is reason to believe that this one was planned in exactly the same way. And its result was the same.
From midnight, Ukrainian formations began to conduct reconnaissance of the landing area, using a Bayraktar TB2 drone in the vicinity of Ochakov.
To distract the attention of the lighthouse garrison on the Tendrovskaya Spit west of the Kinburn Peninsula, the BEC was launched.
Actually, one of the tasks of the garrison is just to observe cruise missiles, UAV flights and BECs of the enemy.
At about three o’clock in the morning, twelve boats with troops of the Armed Forces of Ukraine moved to the spit, intending to land.
As a result of a fleeting battle, the first three boats were destroyed – they were washed ashore. The other nine turned around and moved in the opposite direction.
The enemy’s losses during the next failed landing are estimated at up to 20 people.
As for the lighthouse garrison, five Marines escaped with minor injuries received during the skirmish.
The incident once again proves a simple truth: Ukrainian formations do not abandon attempts to occupy individual points in the Kherson region.
At the same time, there were no long-term plans, and there are no long-term plans: the main thing, losing people, is to occupy some point, and how people there will be supplied and defended from Russian forces is secondary.
The media component is paramount.

Роман Алехин:
According to information from sources on that side, the Ukrainians are creating a new tactical direction in the Sumy region. The other day, comrades Two Majors wrote about the accumulation of equipment and personnel in the vicinity of Sumy, as confirmed today, and these are not just reserves, but most likely preparations for opening a new front. This is evidenced by the fact that the units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in this direction received their tactical sign – a triangle .
The main question is only: who will open a new front? On the one hand, we have long been talking about the need to open a new front in order to further stretch the reserves of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, on the other hand, knowing their love for information campaigns, they may try to enter our territories of the Kursk region , as it once happened in the Belgorod region. They also need this to strengthen Zelensky’s negotiating position, to show that they have no reason to bargain with their territories. And for this they are ready to pay a very high price with the lives of Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers.
But, in any case, border residents should be prepared for the fact that the intensity of shelling from the Ukrainian Nazis will increase, in both the first and second scenarios. It is better to try to leave these territories at least for a while.

@215 SOS
Thanks. I had thought the “system” mentioned would be a complete set to maximum charge. It was more because Spain does not have a large military, @ 150 pieces of 155mm in the army as far as I make out, for example. So possibly just stockpile for possibility of more artillery, or ‘EU’/NATO stockpile. In more recent history Spain has only ever chipped in to larger military endeavours, often criticised locally for that, and has an anti-nato undercurrent as well. The military is small but well thought of in general though . For Ukraine almost all media is pro-EU/NATO, but I think half the population aren’t interested at all or are just cynical towards it all, similar to national politics which are just seen as a parody by many. So was just wondering if there was some new military initiative, or if it was more of fitting in with the rest and just updating stock.

Key points from Shoigu’s press conference after negotiations with the President of Azerbaijan in Baku
It is meaningless to talk about the “Zelenskyy formula” at the negotiations.
There is no point in discussing formats similar to the Geneva Conference, as negotiations without the main negotiator are illogical.
Two months have passed since the president announced the conditions for settlement regarding the so-called Ukraine, but the Kyiv regime has not reacted to them in any way.
The window of opportunity for Kyiv is shrinking day by day, and the Ukrainian people are paying a heavy price for the delay.
If Western countries expect that they can drag Russia into negotiations on the Ukraine in the hope of the army losing the initiative, these expectations are mistaken.
Over the past two months, more than 400 square kilometers of territory have been liberated, the total losses of Ukrainian formations amounted to more than 115,000.

❗️🇷🇺🇺🇦 The situation in the Kursk region – what is known as of 13:00
This morning, Ukrainian formations attempted an offensive in the Kursk region – at the moment, the main events are unfolding in the Sudzhansky and Korenevsky districts . Information about the enemy’s attempt to break through was confirmed by the acting head of the region, Alexey Smirnov .
▪️At night, the Ukrainian Armed Forces carried out strikes across the Kursk region, launching at least 26 drones . Most of the strikes were in Sudzha , where five civilians were injured, including three children. Footage of severe destruction of residential buildings is circulating online.
▪️Later, Ukrainian formations launched attacks in several areas. In the Korenevsky district , the enemy began moving from Vladimirovka in the direction of Gordeyevka. In the Sudzhansky district, the enemy’s offensive is developing from the Sudzha checkpoint and the Glubokoe tract .
The main attack of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is aimed at Goncharovka and Kurilovka . According to incoming information, the enemy managed to wedge in along the 38K-004 highway , where at least three Ukrainian tanks and a group of infantry were spotted near the Sudzha checkpoint . Several armored vehicles were destroyed.
Another direction of enemy attacks was the Nikolayevo – Daryino – Sverdlikovo line: according to preliminary information, battles are taking place on the outskirts of populated areas. Armored vehicles of the Ukrainian Armed Forces with a new tactical identification mark in the form of a triangle were also spotted in this area.
▪️In the Ukrainian media, what is happening is presented from diametrically opposed positions: while some call the offensive an information and psychological operation on the part of the Russian authorities, others, in their usual manner, exaggerate the successes, talking about the beginning of the fighting almost in Sudzha itself.
❗️Against the backdrop of the Ukrainian attacks, several Russian media outlets reported that during the night and early morning, Russian Armed Forces drone operators noticed a concentration of enemy forces along the border, but due to bureaucratic red tape and fear of making a decision, no one gave the order to use firepower.
🔻Nevertheless, the Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk region is nothing new – another PR campaign by the enemy, following the example of last year’s attacks in the border area. And the goals of such actions by the Ukrainian Armed Forces are obvious: distracting the attention of their own population from failures in other parts of the front, as well as an attempt to stretch the forces of the “North” group, forcing them to redeploy units from Vovchansk and Glubokoye .
All previous attempts by Ukrainian formations to enter the border areas of Belgorod and Kursk regions always ended with significant losses and retreat. And although the outcome of the enemy’s new attempt is not in doubt, the threat of new offensives by the Ukrainian Armed Forces will continue to support the issue of the need to create a “sanitary zone” around the Russian border.

The print edition of Newsweek still exists. A neighbor of mine subscribes ($9.99 a month gets you print in addition to web). I’m guessing the print edition still exists for the benefit of old folks and physicians’ waiting rooms.
In any case it’s a poorly kept secret that Newsweek loses money hand over fist, and is kept alive for its propaganda value to certain demographics. Rather like the Wall Street Journal that way.

In ‘EU’…the politi then ‘have to’ make a show of how ‘invested’ ‘EU’ population is in the territory, to sell their corruption. Anyway, there are hardly any ‘taxpayers’ left, they just hand back part of what the ‘governments’ hand out. ‘All’ very ‘virtual’ nowadays ”””””. Those who stand out for any kind of independent direction get whipped, the bureaucracies have an insatiable appetite for the innocent time and energy of others, it freshens them up…and if we didn’t agree we would not be paying them…so.

That’s because if you surround an enemy completely they sit in basements and bunkers for months and you risk a fight to the bitter end but if you give them a way out you can hammer them with artillery as they try to flee to safety leaving their heavy weapons behind.

Every single time, it looked like they would get surrounded and obliterated (or a big surrender), they were able to get out at the last minute. There really hasn’t been a significant encirclement on either side (a real one, that they coudn’t escape from) other than the Mariupul seige. So, it’s really less of a danger than people think.”

I have an opposite opinion on this issue.
The Russians were only completely defeated by one army over 1,000 years-the Golden Horde-the Golden Horde, like all Mongol armies practiced the ‘Golden Bridge” tactic where the Mongols get a town or an army surrounded but they leave one small part of it open so that the defender can escape.
The Russians learned from the Mongol tactics which they, in turn, had learned from Sun Tzu:
“The idea of giving your opponent a golden bridge comes from Sun Tzu’s, The Art of War. This interpretation usually comes from Sun Tzu’s advice about engaging in battle and in chapter 7 of the original text (“Armed Struggle”), he advised that “A surrounded army must be given a way out. The ancient rule of the charioteers says, “Surround them on three sides, leaving one side open, to show them a way to life. Show them a way to life so that they will not be in the mood to fight to the death, and then you can take advantage of this to strike them.”
Even an exhausted army will fight if they feel there is no other option.” (1)

Dima is unique in that for the first time in history during a major war we get to see how the war is being fought from the “enemies” perspective in real time.
I’m not talking about his mapping or accounts of battles but the Telegram gossip that ordinary Russians are having. We never got the perspective of the Germans or japanese during WW2 or even what ordinary Iraqi’s thought during the “Saddam wars”.
In a war no one has a copyright on the truth … it’s all perspective and propaganda … the truth may come out years later if at all. With Dima we’re watching a Russian speaker sort through the bullshit from both sides and at least try to seperate it out. Obviously he doesn’t have all the information and gets it wrong from time to time but that’s part of what makes his perspective interesting.

You armchair general excuse-makers are silly. The siege is one of the most efficient types of warfare.
In surrounded siege, your enemy is incredibly demoralized and often he will surrender. Or as he is pinned down and concentrated, you can effectively eliminate him with concentrated fires of your choice (artillery, mortars, bombing, and heavy machine guns).
Even if he wants to make some Alamo stand, he is inhibited by the lack of supply (ammunition, water, food, medical supplies, wounded evac, etc.). You have all the control and he has none, so you can select how to effectively eliminate him with minimum danger to yourself and maximum to him.
If you eliminate the enemy (supposedly what you muh attrition copers want!), then you don’t have to fight him later. Let him escape and he can return the favor and raid or try to ambush you.

HB, 237:
Good point and that is one of his est features, knowledge of the language and being plugged into the T networks (the other mappers are too, but perhaps relying on machine translation). He has other good features like the frequency of updates and sort of having a little bit of an infrastructure. I just have to decide where to spend my time and I ended up seeing that major news gets reported by all…and that Dima is pretty weak on analysis and I get very sick of his presentation (zooming in too close, so you can’t even see the context, covering the map with the little videos, that are then too small to see and too grainy and not really analyzed at length either). It’s not like I can’t handle a pro Russian slant. I just want intelligent insights.
But feel free to read and report from Dima, yourself. But don’t tell me to go try Dima as if new to me…I been done done that…a lot!

Here is what we should learn from the Americans, it is the ability to try to foresee potential threats and not wait for the roast rooster, and then run around like a scalded cat. Of course, this does not always work out, they do not always guess, but the experience of the war has already sobered up the shapkozaki approach to their weapons a little. Bradley is a very strong IFV with a very accurate autocannon, Hymers and Atakms are very accurate missiles, and the Patriot is a deadly air defense system.
Of course, this does not mean that they have an unequivocal dominance over our weapons. Experience shows that they are more or less at a comparable level, our systems are quite capable of fighting American ones. But at the same time, American weapons show quite stable quality, while many of our systems had to be treated for childhood diseases revealed during combat operations.
And in addition to this, the strong point of the Americans is the ability to systematically work on potential threats, to create comprehensive solutions for counteraction. So, realizing that they will have to face the mass use of drones in the coming years, they are essentially rethinking and creating micro-air defense. Which will operate at different levels, in different ways against different targets.
At the same time, on the pages of near-military TG channels, there has long been a public discussion on the place and significance of various anti-drone solutions. And electronic warfare and electronic reconnaissance, and interceptor drones, and anti-aircraft kamikaze drones, and laser installations, and programmable fuses for autocannons, and shotguns, and APS for equipment. Some of these elements are created by the people’s military-industrial complex, some at defense plants. But the system of working with testing of integral systems at the front has not yet been noticed. Although the price of each day is very high for us, while the Americans do not suffer such losses, and at the same time they are engaged in this research systematically, without chaotic twitching. Which shows the level of subsidence of our military science.
And here is the latest news, with the renewal of personnel in GUIR, and yesterday’s arrest, inspires hope that our approach will become more systematic and effective.

“The Russians learned from the Mongol tactics which they, in turn, had learned from Sun Tzu”

I have to disagree, Genghis would have thought learning to be effeminate, hence Genghis’s men routinely destroyed books and documents, especially in the Muslim parts of the world. But Genghis did make full use of Chinese siege engine technologies, as those were useful and practical, he used captured Chinese to build and operate them. While the Russians leave a way open for the enemy to escape, Genghis didn’t like any of his enemy escaping. If he left a way open it was for the enemy to leave their fortifications so that his bowmen could better come to grips with them.
Close quarters combat was too costly to engage in often, much better to just attrition the enemy from afar with the Mongol bowmen. If sufficient Turks or Chinese could be obtained, those were thrown in to do the close quarters combat. If the enemy was too strong, then the Mongols would retreat, its not like the enemy could catch them. With the Muslims Genghis’s best strategy was to attack their cities with lightning fast strikes out of the blue, while the cities defenders were manning armies far away. He would catch the cities with their gates still open, then wipe out everyone inside. The enemy armies would then just dissolve as they had no families left to fight for or homes or cities to return to, stragglers would be mopped up. So no eyeball to eyeball braveheart stuff, just utter annihilation of the enemy’s support base and structures when the enemy was not even aware the Mongols were in the vicinity. Now that is what you truly call winning without fighting. The Chinese “Its best to win without fighting” doesn’t come close to what the Mongols actually did do.

Well yea … he’s not a military analyst and he doesn’t have any military experience beyond the standard 2 year compulsory service.
He does however understand how the Russians fight which is not the way the Americans fight or the USA’s post WW2 mentors the Wehrmacht fought so there is none of that frustration that I get listening to a western analyst who decries the lack of “movement” by the Russians while at the same time calls a Russian retreat over a major river without a single casualty suffered by the main force a “defeat”.

If he left a way open it was for the enemy to leave their fortifications so that his bowmen could better come to grips with them.
That’s exactly what they did because if you lay siege to an enemy they fight to the death whereas if you gave them a way to flee you can mow them down as the run.
So no eyeball to eyeball braveheart stuff, just utter annihilation of the enemy’s support base and structures when the enemy was not even aware the Mongols were in the vicinity.
When returning western mercs are interviewed one of the most common things you hear is “we never saw a Russian” but if they so much as went out of the dugout to have a smoke they would be greeted with artillery fire or a tank round.
The funny thing is Russians avoiding “eyeball to eyeball” contact is being met with comments of “muh attrition” but when the mongols did it it was a brilliant tactic.

Looks like AFU is taking a beating in their Kursk excursion. Also confirmed by scraping TG channels for videos and details. Additionally, RUAF hit two BUK systems supposed to cover this operation.

Our source in the General Staff said that the command staff in the Donetsk direction does not understand the strategic plan of the Commander-in-Chief with an attack on the Kursk region, since they are denied reserves and equipment to hold the front, and then elite units are thrown into battle. Among the military, serious dissatisfaction is brewing with the actions of Syrsky, who is not able to stabilize the front, but at the same time carries out PR attacks on Russian territories and wastes the best units.

Our source in the General Staff said that the attack on the Kursk region is faltering and the Ukrainian Armed Forces will be forced to roll back due to heavy losses. The commander-in-chief counted on the effect of surprise when planning the operation, but now it is clear that the enemy was expecting our attack in this direction.

Doesn’t seem like the Ukrainian forces are running out of men –

About 300 Ukrainian Armed Forces militants attacked the border in the Kursk region
MOSCOW, August 6. /TASS/. The Ukrainian Armed Forces sent up to 300 militants supported by 11 tanks to attack Russian positions near Nikolayevo-Daryino and Oleshnya in the Kursk region. Russian border troops are repelling the attacks, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.
“Today, starting at 08:00 Moscow time, after a fire preparation by up to 300 militants from the 22nd Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, supported by 11 tanks and more than 20 combat armored vehicles, the enemy attacked the positions of the units covering the state border of the Russian Federation in the areas of the settlements of Nikolayevo-Daryino and Oleshnya in the Kursk region, directly adjacent to the Russian-Ukrainian border. The troops covering the state border, together with units of the border troops of the FSB of Russia, are repelling attacks and inflicting fire damage on the enemy in the area of the state border and reserves in the territory of the Sumy region,” the department reported.

Have a blast, HB. I tried it and quit. And no, it wasn’t from some sort of fear of what he said. All the people are basically giving the same news. Sometimes, with slightly different flavors. But it all washes out in the end, all the maps change. Now that I’ve learned how to scan the DS map daily updates (the little bell thing in the corner) and how to generate the cross-hatch patterns for changes, I really get most of the info very well from that.
Given that, I really prefer to listen to someone who has interesting added insights. Willy is excellent in that he is much more seasoned as a military type, really has a feel for things better than some video gamer. He also looks at both sides (not just the one he likes). And he’s even had in depth interviews with working soldiers from each side. Just today, he had excellent analysis (and presentation) of the defensive works takeovers near NY and Progress. It’s clearly a level above Dima’s treadmill.
I also like to have effective presentation. Dima is just really hard to track (can’t even see what is going on!) In contrast, Theti, DPA, and Willy all do very watchable map views.
I was watching Theti for a while, but he really drones on in a monotone. In contrast DPA is funny and engaging. Also, Theti has decided that his “niche” is unit identification. But that is almost entirely random factoid noise, sans insight. As I don’t have a good feel for the 100s of numbered units on each side. (It’s the opposite of analytical information, is laundry list detail, sans critical import.)
Plus on top of that, there’s some pretty good articles that show that both sides (especially the Ukrops) are not really operating at the brigade level any more. They swap battalions/companies around like crazy, so it’s not even like the 147th Kossacks (made up random name) means something. Yeah, 3rd Azov means something. But that’s the rarity and interesting. And how the others (all of them) talk about units. But Theti is (literally) a high school kid and has not learned the difference between data and analysis.
Anyhow…feel free to look at what you want. I’m just explaining my media consumption.

I find it funny that you post the attack in the Kursk direction is evidence that the Ukrainians have no shortage of troops while the post above (Posted by: unimperator | Aug 6 2024 17:13 utc | 250) states that the Donetsk commander can’t understand how they are wasting tanks and men attacking at Kursk while he has no reserves to plug holes in his line. >The siege is one of the most efficient types of warfare.
Problem with sieges is similar to that of narrow salients. Namely, if you leave a besieged site in your rear, the enemy can break out and cause all sorts of havoc in your rear. So you have to allocate huge numbers of troops to prevent this. If you have unlimited troops, that’s possible. Otherwise, troops (plus logistics to support those troops) tied down maintaining the siege reduce your ability to move forwards. Multiply this by dozens of sieges, which can each take months or years to resolve, and it becomes a major problem when resources are limited. And the attrition might be negligible, because a small garrison can hold a strong fortress a very long time.
Note that Russia didn’t just besiege AzovSteel in Mariupol and wait a year for it to fall but made an effort to speed up the fall. Likewise, Israel isn’t just besieging Gaza and quietly waiting a few years for it to fall but actively destroying it to speed up the fall. Long sieges pose political as well as military problems.
Each situation must be looked at individually and in context of the big picture. But it could easily make sense for Russia to prefer allowing some Ukrainians to escape New York versus risking the own troops in the assault that would have been required to surround that town.

Why is this attack with 300, 11 tanks and some drones considered large? it’s tiny, like training. And they’ve managed to shoot down a ka52, or so the Ru channels say. I think nato can consider a victory to give a few useless zombies for a ka52 and the option to try again as many times as they want.
Anyway, like the other stupid attack with boats and jet skis, they probably wanted to enter, kill or take hostage everyone they can find and post the videos on social media for tonight’s msm news.

For close surveillance they’d need to be quiet and visually inconspicuous, dirt on sensors might be a difficult problem to solve, plus difficulty with comms due to being low down, and then there’s overall cost.
Maybe there’s a cheap / generic design that could put legs on a warhead and be dropped to the ground from an FPV carrier that also acted as a reusable comms relay.
Being able to quietly walk a warhead into a structure or dugout might be a worthwhile specialisation.

Yeah, good point. Of course things move slow and a watched pot and all that. I think I now get very fast input on the major changes from daily DS. The videos are more for entertainment, but d have some added content. At the end of the day, there is an unfortunate aspect of entertainment (like watching sports) to just see what happens next.
Perhaps there is an unfilled niche for someone to do a weekly update. I have tried the monthly update that Kings and Generals does, but it’s a little annoying in terms of presentation (music and such) and the bias. Really, the most terse and helpful monthly update is the War Mapper monthly numbers. Kind of distills things.

Kursk Region
Apparently, the enemy and our forces are pulling reserves, reloading and consolidating their current positions. Information from the field is coming in less intensively compared to the previous day of heavy fighting. Both sides suffered losses in personnel and equipment, as can be seen from open sources.
Apparently, the Ukrainian Armed Forces will consolidate their positions on our territory as much as possible.
Civilians should listen carefully to the instructions of regional authorities and not read enemy channels. At dusk, enemy UAV crews were clearly preparing night drones, which they have in abundance, and everyone already knows about the terrorist nature of the actions of regular units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Strength and patience to our troops.

Apparently there are only border guards with small arms and local militia in this area. Seems very incompetent of Russia to not have a strong defense on its border with Ukraine.

I will repeat what I said above – the enemy, having a strong desire to exchange territories, is trying with all its might to seize a bridgehead on the territory of the large, “mainland” Russia, in order to then neutralize the successes of Russian troops in the liberated territories with this exchange. If we consider the enemy’s actions in this direction, it becomes clear that now their actions are focused on attempts to take control of the regional center of Sudzha, which will be a serious success for them.
There are few options – to stop this breakthrough. I will note the logistics of the enemy, who has the ability to quickly transfer forces and resources over long distances within a few days. This is a serious lever, opportunities that cannot be underestimated. With
all the minuses, the degradation of management, the lack of people, etc., the enemy still has the ability to instantly increase the group in one area to complete the assigned task. And here everything will depend on the fortitude and tenacity of our troops, logistics, and the firepower of the RF Armed Forces in a specific area.
In reality, as two years ago, the border in the Kursk direction is held by border guards, and there are also territorial units (territorial defense) from locals covering the border. During the entire day of combat reports, I did not find any mention of “Tik-Tok troops.” A week ago, “Akhmat” in Suzhna performed a lezginka, shooting into the air. I personally do not know where these people are now.
Those I mentioned are fighting. They are the ones who are being captured. The border covering forces have only small arms. They do not have heavy weapons. It is difficult to hold the defense with such weapons in the face of an enemy that has the initiative, supported by artillery and armored vehicles. The next day or two will show how serious the enemy’s intentions are specifically in this area, whether they will be able to develop their success and whether they will try to bite off something else and move forward.
The situation is difficult.

Now we’re talking!
I now have a firm date for “ukie protests” to make my tangential analysis vs WWI
.
1. The surrender is 25/02/2025, day 1100 of the war
2. AFU will have slightly under 1.200.000 KIA in the war
3. Ukraine started with a theoretical population of 45.500.000
4. As it is stated that it started with 48.500.000, The date could be as close as 05/02/2024 ( but on another side of the parallel it would be as close as 01/11/2024, but protests should have started on 21/07/2024, KIA would be only 90% of the full estimate)
SO… no good news for Z, and on the second scenario catastrophic for Biden.
I would bet that is the reason why Z is being pushed so hard, that extra 10% can leave the problem/defeat for Trump…

On the situation in Kursk Oblast as of the end of August 6.
1. The enemy has not been forced out of the border areas of Kursk Oblast by the evening, despite the losses it has suffered.
2. Intensive fighting continues in the border areas. Artillery is actively operating on both sides.
3. The enemy is reportedly pulling up reserves from the Shostka area. The enemy will try to gain a foothold in the border areas.

4. The attack itself is already obviously not just a “sabotage and reconnaissance group raid”, but a fairly large-scale operation, where the enemy is currently using forces of up to two brigades, which are covered by a significant number of air defense systems (2 air defense systems were destroyed by our military during the day).
5. Air defense was operating in the Kurchatov area. They shot everything down.

I think they’re trying a reverse karkhiv.
Trying to pin/divert RF resources. I checked the map and it was an “empty” area (troops wise) Where would they like RF to divert resources from?
Don’t they realize it is not symmetrical? RF has plenty of troops in rotation in and out of the LOC (not to mention a full new military district army) that can be sent into the fray if needed.
Or maybe it’s trying to reduce bombing elsewhere, maybe trying to cover some retreat, FABs there, less FABs elsewhere.

Dima, says that this last attack on Kursk means that Ukraine is never going to negotiate with Russia. Just more war.
Russia would have a lot of problem with an opponent that decided to fight to the last and live without electricity.

Posted by: vargas | Aug 6 2024 21:30 utc | 273

Dima said the Stryker convoy (7 vehicles) in Kursk region was most likely destroyed, but the infantry they were carrying could still be in the villages. AFU plan was to take the villages on the east side of the river, providing water barrier, and use infantry to block the road to the north. No updates whether this has succeeded and what is happening now.
The rest is complete speculation, but this could be a diversionary attack, and AFU could launch either another attack toward Belgorod, or in the Zaporozhye region.
Two Majors:

According to generalized data from all open sources, the enemy forces gathered for the invasion amounted to several thousand people (including artillerymen and UAVs in the Sumy region) and dozens of armored vehicles, a couple of air defense systems, several air defense systems with MANPADS for ambushes on our aviation, footage of the death of a helicopter spread by the enemy. He allocated elite brigades armed with Bradleys for the invasion. The enemy paid special attention to electronic warfare and evacuation groups, which, as in the spring in the Belgorod region, dragged away corpses.
The invasion of enemy forces was not unexpected for intelligence; it did not oversleep anything. The accumulation of forces and equipment was reported, as our military channels write.
The enemy’s immediate offensive went in several directions; the enemy, judging by his personnel, managed to occupy a number of positions defended by conscripts. Many note the courage and tenacity of our border guards, in response to attacks on whose positions the enemy did not spare NATO missiles.
The enemy managed to take positions near Daryino and a number of other settlements, and is filming tik-toks. The enemy also took prisoners and began releasing footage of them after our release by the Ministry of Defense.
✨It is too early to say that the enemy has been knocked out of Kursk land, judging by unofficial sources.
That is, at present, regular units of the enemy army have invaded Russian territory and are holding their positions. Right now another convoy of equipment is being destroyed on our territory.
Kyiv embarked on a serious escalation of the conflict, hiding behind sweet speeches about negotiations.

That sounds like Ukronazistan’s problem, not Russia’s. Especially the living-without-electricity part.

Southfront thinks the Kursk and Kinburn spit attacks are a sign of impotence, and Ukraine has no more reserves left. This seems to be further confirmed by Ukrainian commanders in Donbass front, who were shocked of these attacks (regarding their cost vs. usefulness).

Daily DS dropped.
0. No coverage of the border raid/invasion. Seems strange, but I guess they have to follow orders, given their funding.
1. Pretty decent RFA advance in NYC proper. (No, not the whole city that cheerleaders are saying, but still several blocks further.)
2. Small advance in Zhelane outskirts (Progress area).
3. Small advance in the Vulehdar sector (a field).
4. Sort of a strange “clarification” of Heleboke area. I think clarification is meant for map updates correcting an error, but not a recent gain. Anyhow, was taking a wide grey zone and giving part to RFA and part to UFA. With strange UFA control line running down the middle of a lake. Not sure what it all means. Don’t think that is an active area. Not sure if it is DS fessing up to being disengenuous earlier.. Or just honestly fixing a mistake.

Btw, if they ‘paid special attention to body recovery teams’, that probably means a large part of the attackers are foreign mercs. Albeit this group supposedly was moved from the Belarus border, it is mixed with mercs.

If what happened today in the Kursk region is the beginning of the enemy’s implementation of the main plan, then in the near future we should expect another blow in the Northern direction. IMHO. Perhaps, there will be a second blow on the border with the Bryansk region. But there will also be a third and fourth. The idea of creating a militia in the border areas was sound. But, unfortunately, it ended only with a media effect. Strength, fortitude and soldierly luck to our guys. These days will not be easy.

Combine these couple of suicide attacks, Odessa and Kursk, with the Ukroids recently announcing they have F-16’s.
Simplicius posted on twitter what he believed were Russian losses at Kursk, but what was very odd is he wote two T-62’s as Russian losses. Those T-62’s could be from the Donbass but otherwise the Russian military does not have T62.

Several thousand including “tail”, after all not everyone in a unit is “teeth”. The 300 are either a vanguard or in one particular direction.
Also it is a diversion, not a major attack. A couple of brigades will get chewed up quickly or they’ll need replacements.
Both of those are in short supply for the Donbass LoC. That’s why this is so stupid.
Russia has far more uncommitted reserves and doesn’t have to rely on press-gangs. Ukraine has to rob the LoC of scarce resources and send dudes with a week of “training” to get shot to bits at an ever more unfavorable rate.

Commander Apti Alaudinov claimed RUAF has enough resources to deal with the Kursk incursion without affecting other things.
But the same obviously is not true for Ukraine. They took troops from one active front, to deploy them to another, completely new non-active front (which is now active). If you look at isolated parts of the front individually, then from RUAF perspective something weakened in the Donbass.
If the Belgorod ‘invasion’ of May 2023 is similar, then it will end up in the AFU advance being stalemated. Their BUK systems covering it were already destroyed, leaving them only with MANPADS. We’ll see if RUAF stops them and hits them one-by-one with long range weapons.
Considering it’s Budanov and Nato, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he sends single troops into Russia and try to just kill everyone they come across. This is terrifying, but they could do that.

This was preceded slightly by many drone attacks against civilian apartment building. One was caught on video fly along the top story of apartment buildings until it saw and open window, flew in and detonated. Killed an elderly woman.
With Ukraine and Gaza, Nato/western killing is now off the charts and very in your face.

Unfortunately, it’s nothing new. The US and UK have never had any issues with killing civilians by the thousands or more. Also recall the ISIS head choppers. No proxy is too evil or inhumane for NATzO and few Israeli or FUKUSNATO ‘troops’ have ever been held accountable for murdering civilians in cold blood, let alone anyone in the command structure who ordered it. And that’s a feature, not a bug.

Next the claim was that Avdeevka was used to destroy all “last reserves”.

“Last” is wrong, but “finite” & “not readily available” properly trained & equipped reserves is correct.
There’s a reason why the LoC is crumbling and casualties amongst press-ganged AFU meat are currently spiking.
Any offensive will burn more men & material quicker than would’ve happened elsewise.
Unless anyone here is silly enough to think a new AFU offensive, will end better than the one that failed utterly last summer.

What is this rubbish?
Ukraine has never made ”sweet speeches about negotiations “!! – that is Russia doing that!
Point me to any speech given by Zelensky in which he calls for peace negotiations with Russia immediately and without pre-conditions.
You can’t because he’s never done so – it is only Putin saying things like that and that Russia is ready to negotiate when there is a willing and able negotiating partner to negotiate with.
Why make up these lies about Ukraine wanting peace negotiations – they never have and certainly don’t want any at the moment!
Are you relying on perfidious Western media sources for these ridiculous claims?!?

📋🇷🇺🇺🇦⚔️ #Kursk Region – #Summary for the Morning of 7 August 2024; 06:45 (GMT+3)📍
🔹By nightfall, it became finally clear that it was impossible to dislodge the foe forces from the territory they had occupied. Air strikes by the RFAF, which had been highly effective during the day, were now hampered by the high density of the foe’s air defences.
🔹The town of #Sudzha has been virtually evacuated. Public institutions and the population was evacuated with the help of regional authorities, transport and ambulance crews were allocated. The governor is in touch with the troops and characterises the situation as tense but controlled. Over the day, 16 AFU armoured vehicles (more by morning) and 2 Buk SAMs were destroyed.
🔹All day and all night both sides were bringing in reserves. A number of sources report possible attempts by the foe to destabilise the situation in other parts of the front, including in order to mislead our headquarters.
🔹As of 22:00, according to open data, the AFU were in the settlements of #Daryino, #Sverdlikovo, #Gogolevka and #Goncharovka. The situation at the #Oleshnya settlement was difficult, our strongholds were taken, the selfless actions of our border guards have been reported. The foe was remotely mining the #Sudzha – #Belitsa Motorway.
🔹By nightfall there were 150 to 200 Ukrainian militants and up to 15 units of foe equipment in these areas. Our UAV units destroyed several units of foe equipment overnight.
🔹Our air defence worked in the region during the night. We reported about downed missiles and aircraft-type UAVs. During the day there was official information about wounded and injured.
📌 The upcoming day will be heavy. The foe has no less than a motorised infantry battalion on our and adjacent territory, up to 2000 militants as a second echelon, uses many drones, while skilfully employing air defence and electronic warfare equipment.

🔥🔥🔥 It has begun. Provocation of unacceptable escalation or a diversionary strike❓
Today, units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine carried out offensive actions on the territory of the Kursk region of the Russian Federation. What is known at this hour:
🔹Zelensky is no longer hiding behind the Russian Volunteer Corps, as was the case with the raids of the RDC in the Bryansk region. This is important☝️ This gives the Russian Federation a reason to declare a WAR of Ukraine against the territory of the Russian Federation recognized by international law and the international community. NOT about “SVO”, NOT about “martial law”, NOT about the defense of Ukraine on its territory, but about war;
Apparently, this is one of the tasks – unacceptable escalation.
🔹The Armed Forces of Ukraine carried out not just a sabotage and reconnaissance group sortie. The offensive is supported by armored vehicles, drones, and, of course, artillery. The same American Bradleys have been spotted, which are pushing into the territory of the canonical Russian Federation. Another reason for the Russians to talk about war with NATO;
🔹The reserves (quality and quantity) accumulated by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in this direction are excessive for a normal attempt to stretch the Russian troops;
🔹Both sides suffered losses. Russian channels publish burning armored vehicles and BUKs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces that covered the offensive. Ukrainian ones – a video with three prisoners and a burning helicopter;
🔹All data and videos about losses need to be carefully double-checked. The IPSO on both sides is running at full speed. The same Azov is hyping up that the coming weeks will change the WORLD;
🔹The attackers were clearly expected. The Russian Armed Forces used almost all types of possible weapons: artillery, Lancets, Iskander, FAB strikes, and Su-25s and attack helicopters were also in action. All this was recorded on video;
🔹The Russian Defense Ministry stated that the attackers have been pushed back into Ukrainian territory and blocked. In fact, active military operations in the area continue;
🔹Ukrainian officials prefer to remain silent. Apparently, so that it doesn’t turn out like last year’s “extremely successful” counteroffensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which the talking heads talked about for the first two weeks.
It is too early to draw any firm conclusions about whether this operation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is the main direction of the attack.
The excess of Ukrainian Armed Forces reserves in the area speaks FOR this. Perhaps Zelensky intends to use the territories captured in case of success as a bargaining chip, but so far nothing has been captured, and time is not in favor of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the Russian Armed Forces are actively transferring reserves.
But it looks MORE like provoking Putin:
🔺declare a new mobilization (it is necessary to defend the original Russian territories, and not to withdraw troops from the offensive of the Russian army);
🔺use non-conventional weapons (due to the attack on the territory of the Russian Federation);
🔺transfer reserves, which will reduce the pressure in Donbas.
But so far the goals of the provocation have not been achieved even close, because there is nothing to offer as a result.
From Kyiv it looks like a complete gamble. The last one with the offensive on the Bryansk region only caused fire on Kharkov. Sumy, it seems, should get ready.
In addition, things are really bad in the Pokrovsk direction. New York is about to fall. Entering into an exchange of territories with the Russian Federation instead of strengthening the defense of Pokrovsk and Chasovy Yar is a tactic calculated for short-term media success.
We will watch. So far, we can state that the Armed Forces of Ukraine did not even have 8 hours from the start of the operation to the attack on the advancing with everything they had.

🔥 From the point of view of the Kursk operation, tomorrow will be a decisive day.
Both sides are pulling together reserves, this is reported by TG channels. In addition, insiders from both sides confirmed this to us.
When we modeled such an invasion of the territory of the Russian Federation, we took into account that the Ukrainian Armed Forces would have a head start for the first 24 hours. Then the Russian Federation will pull up reserves, special forces, a bunch of tactical aircraft (understandable given the new range of airfield destruction) and fill a small section of the front with all this.
If tomorrow the Ukrainian Armed Forces cannot take something significant from the populated areas, then they are unlikely to advance further.
Therefore, strikes on the nuclear power plant are a likely target, given the main objective of the operation – escalation.
There is no talk of any long-term retention of a small area on the territory of the Russian Federation with the current balance of forces of the parties.
You need to understand this in order to live in a world of illusions.

https://t.me/ZeRada1/20892

🔥 Kursk region
At night, both sides, as we assumed, were actively pulling up reserves, and also preventing the enemy from doing the same.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces control 4 settlements in the Kursk region: Darino, Sverdlikovo, Gogolevka, Goncharovka and took strongholds near the village of Oleshnya.
Early in the morning, the Ukrainian Armed Forces did not continue military operations, and this gives the Russian Federation the opportunity to gain more time to transfer reserves.
Several versions of further developments from the Ukrainian Armed Forces are circulating on the Internet.
Let’s analyze
❌ Throwing to the Kursk NPP. This is written by people who do not understand anything at all. There is a distance of 60+ km. We can go into detail for a long time about the necessary geometry of the breakthrough, for which a couple of corps of motivated personnel are needed, we will simply write – it is unrealistic.
✅ Throwing to the Zaporizhzhya NPP. The Kursk operation could be a diversionary strike that should force the transfer of excessive forces of the Russian Armed Forces to the opposite flank of the horseshoe of the front from Zaporizhia. Perhaps this is why the version about the Kursk NPP is being promoted.
We described the difficulties of the strike on the Zaporizhzhya NPP. All conclusions remain valid.
✅ Destruction of the Sudzha gas distribution station. Nothing prevents this scenario. A question of political expediency. Orban will probably start calling Zelensky today and putting pressure on him, since in this scenario Hungary will suffer the most.

Posted by: Down South | Aug 7 2024 6:24 utc | 298

Our source reports that the problem of Zelensky’s PR campaign in the Kursk region and the desire to seize the Kursk NPP at the cost of even causing a nuclear catastrophe is of a nature to disrupt negotiations.
The source indicates that another goal of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the British OP is to draw the Russians into an offensive in the Sumy region.
Bankova is currently fighting with infantry, which means it is beneficial for them to weaken the “fist” of the Russians in Donbass, but there is a possibility of failure as a result of the operation, which in a few days will end in nothing but “noise”.
Another goal is to sow panic among peaceful Russians so that they start to be indignant towards the Kremlin and the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, but there is a danger that the mood of Russians will rise to maximum aggression, which will cause a surge of mobilization forces and the worst thing is a real official war, which the Kremlin can declare and then the chances of the Ukrainian Armed Forces will “fall”, and the supply of weapons and aid to Kyiv will be regarded as participation in the war.
Let’s see what this PR will result in. But Sumy is already getting it, the locals are already feeling it.

Posted by: Down South | Aug 7 2024 6:29 utc | 299

Our source in the OP said that Zelensky is preparing the last counter-offensive, which should allow Ukraine to enter the negotiation track as the winner. For this purpose, new brigades and reserves with Western military equipment are being formed.
Now the General Staff, together with NATO military advisers, is preparing two operations, one diversionary in the Kharkov direction and the main one at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. Eight brigades have already been formed, which are undergoing training in Western Ukraine and are waiting for F-16 fighters to launch the autumn counter-offensive.

https://t.me/rezident_ua/23713

Our source in the General Staff reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ attack on the Kursk region was organized as a diversionary maneuver to prepare a counteroffensive on the Zaporizhzhya NPP. The second stage will be an attack on Russian positions in the Belgorod direction in order to force the enemy to transfer reserves to hold positions, and only then will the main offensive operation follow.

https://t.me/rezident_ua/23764

Our source in the General Staff said that the attack on the Kursk region is stalling and the Ukrainian Armed Forces will be forced to roll back due to heavy losses. The commander-in-chief counted on the surprise effect when planning the operation, but now it is clear that the enemy was expecting our attack in this direction.

https://t.me/rezident_ua/23768

Our source in the OP said that the task of the Kursk operation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was to go 30 km deeper into Russian territory, using the element of surprise, but by the evening it became clear that the plans had failed and that the strategy needed to be adjusted. It is now important for the General Staff to force the enemy to transfer reserves from Ukraine in order to begin the second stage of the operation on the Zaporizhzhya NPP.
