Britain Claims To Have Helped With The Ukrainian Invasion Of Russia

Yves Smith is discussing the Washington Post report on Russia-Ukraine negotiation to end the infrastructure attacks:

An Admission of Russian Long-Term Weakness or More Complex Calculation?

I had previously discussed the WaPo piece here.

Yves suggests that the negotiations, if they really have happened as described, were an Ukrainian ruse to distract Russia from the Ukrainian preparation of the Kursk oblast incursion. The talks were useless for Russia, she says. She doubts that Russia would favor to stop the attacks on the Ukrainian electricity generating and network capabilities. She suggests that the Ukrainian attacks on Russia create little damage. It disagree with that view.

The winter will already become very difficult for Ukrainian civilians. There is no need to increase the damage on Ukrainian infrastructure beyond the already achieved level.

The Ukrainian attacks have so far created repairable damage in Russia. But that may not be the case forever. One day one of such attacks could in fact create some real catastrophe. The attacks are also binding lots of Russian resources. One needs a huge number of soldiers and equipment to give at least some protection to the most exposed sites. The Russian economy is currently short on men. Not diverting some 100,000 men for local air defense purposes can make a difference.

I believe that Russia was genuinely interested in making such deal. But the Ukrainian attack on Kursk oblast blew it apart.

There are new suggestion on how the Ukrainian incursion into Russia was prepared for.

The Times in London claims that it largely followed a British plan (archived):

When footage of British Challenger 2 battle tanks being used by the Ukrainian army for its counterinvasion of Russia emerged on Tuesday, Downing Street and the Ministry of Defence were ready.

For the previous 48 hours, officials and political aides working for Sir Keir Starmer and John Healey, the defence secretary, had been in talks about how far to go to confirm growing British involvement in the incursion towards Kursk.

The stakes were high. Unseen by the world, British equipment, including drones, have played a central role in Ukraine’s new offensive and British personnel have been closely advising the Ukrainian military for two years, on a scale matched by no other country.

The U.S., in contrast, has claimed not to have known about the Ukrainian plans and there purpose. This leads Kit Klarenberg to develop a theory:

Kit Klarenberg @KitKlarenberg – 15:02 UTC · Aug 18, 2024

"🧵: I speculated earlier was probably Britain behind Kursk suicide op. Lo and behold, a Times article confirms this. More broadly, contents amply underline Kursk latest effort by London to keep the US in the proxy war – and it appears Washington has finally had enough of this.

Times reveals up top heavily promoted footage of British Challenger 2 tanks in Kursk was a conscious, deliberate decision made by new PM Keir Starmer and his defence secretary John Healey. British equipment is said to have "played a central role" in the "counterinvasion".
…
Starmer and Healey reportedly made the decision to advertise London's involvement "to be more open about Britain’s role in a bid to persuade key allies to do more to help." In other words, to encourage/pressure the US et al to double down on this unwinnable, nightmare quagmire.
…
However, US reportedly unhappy with Kursk incursion, because it scuppered peace talks. Kiev's purported culpability for Nord Stream bombing is, it seems, being used to justify ending German aid to Ukraine. And the US is blocking Kiev from firing British-made missiles at Russia.

Kit's theory is that the Washington Post story about the blown negotiations as well as the latest "Nord Stream done by Ukraine" rumor reporting by the WSJ are expressions of U.S. anger over the Ukrainian government and its Kursk invasion.

The Times also reports that Britain is pushing its allies to provide more weapons and to allow their use against targets deep inside of Russia:

In the coming weeks Healey will attend a new meeting of the Ukraine Defence Co-ordination Group, where Britain will press European allies to send more equipment and give Kyiv more leeway to use them in Russia. Healey spoke last week to Lloyd Austin, the US defence secretary, and has been wooing Boris Pistorius, his German opposite number.

Germany, whose Taurus missiles have a similar 155-mile range to Storm Shadow but a more powerful warhead, has been the country under the most pressure to move. However, it was revealed yesterday that Germany has actually frozen military aid to Ukraine because of a domestic budgetary crisis. Pistorius had asked for £3.4 billion of additional supplies but that was rejected by the finance ministry.

A previous leak provided that the long range Taurus missiles are complicate and have to be programmed just-in-time by German officers. There is no support in Germany for allowing such a deep involvement in attacks on Russia.

To me it seems that Britain has promised to Ukraine that it would get its allies to agree to the usage of longer range weapons against Russia in exchange for Ukraine to launch the attack on Russia.

Only that can explain this Zelenski complain about Starmer:

The Ukrainian president complained that British aid to Kyiv had begun to wane as his forces continued their unprecedented incursion into Russian territory in the Kursk region.

“Unfortunately, the situation has slowed down recently,” Mr Zelensky said, referring to UK military assistance.

Sir Keir has upheld a Conservative ban on using UK-made Storm Shadows to strike targets deep inside Russia, amid concerns it could lead to escalation with nuclear-armed Moscow.

“We will discuss how to fix this because long-range capabilities are vital for us. The whole world sees how effective Ukrainians are – how our entire nation defends its independence,” said Mr Zelensky.

It came as four former Conservative defence secretaries called on No 10 to do more to support Ukraine, with some demanding Kyiv be allowed to use Storm Shadows in the Russian offensive.

But it is not Starmer who is blocking the missiles, it is the U.S. of A. (archived):

Washington is in effect blocking Britain from allowing Kyiv to fire Storm Shadow missiles inside Russia, amid fears in the Biden administration of an escalation in the Ukraine war.
…
It is understood that although the UK wants to give Ukraine the freedom to do what they want with the long-range weapon, it requires consensus from allies, including the US, France and a third undisclosed Nato country. A government source stressed that the UK was not blaming the US for any delay, adding that such policy changes took time.

Combining all the above one can (re-)construct this story.

Britain, in a bipartisan move, wants to prolong the war in Ukraine. It suggested to and helped Ukraine to invade Russia even as it knew that this would interrupt peace talks in Qatar. It also promised to press its allies  for long range attack permission against Russia. But the U.S. and Germany are still blocking such attacks. Zelensky now complains that Britain failed to deliver on its promise.

The U.S., miffed about the British involvement in a likely useless Ukrainian attack on Russia, is leaking about the Ukrainian/Russian negotiations in Qatar.

The above is largely based on the U.S. claims that it was not really involved in the planing of the Kursk incursion.

There are of course good reason to doubt those claims:

As the Ukraine war enters its most perilous phase, with Kiev’s forces fighting inside Russia, the United States is operating a formal “sensitive activities” detachment that is active in providing direct military support to the beleaguered country. The detachment, never before disclosed, is run by U.S. special operations forces, and with its Ukrainian counterparts, provides on-the-battlefield support, including near-real time targeting intelligence, operators say.
…
An operator formerly deployed to the Army’s 10th Special Forces Group assigned to a sensitive activities detachment told me their work included the creation of clandestine human networks for intelligence gathering, as well as identifying Russian military weaknesses for targeting.
…
A second operator also described having been tasked with providing near up-to-the-minute intelligence support to Ukrainian forces.

Those U.S. operators in Ukraine certainly did not miss the preparations the Ukrainians were making for their attack.

P.S. Bonus from The Times piece:

“It’s not just about the military support, but it’s about the industrial, economic, and diplomatic support,” the defence source said. “If Putin succeeds in Ukraine he’s not going to stop there. But also the economic implications of that are massive, because we all saw how heavily Britain got hit when he first invaded.”

Yes, the sanctions, intended to hurt Russia, were quite damaging to those who issued them. Nice to see that finally acknowledged.

Interesting report from Colonel Cassad about a fire and explosions just on the outskirts of the Kracow-Balice International Airport.
“In Poland, on the way from military warehouses to the air base of the national air force burned 3 trucks loaded with military equipment intended for transfer to Ukraine.
In the trucks there were heels, bulletproof vests and boxes with mortar shots.
The detonations of the ammunition were heard by residents of the surrounding villages of Alexandrovitsa and Muravica for two hours.
The firefighters could not start extinguishing because of the explosions.

Either a truck driver was careless with a cigarette butt, or Russian special forces are honing their expertise. This war is spreading both east and west of Ukraine.

Kursk direction at 18.00 08.20.24: Lgovsko-Sudzhansky section…
Here, unfortunately, there are changes and not in our favor.
As we expected in the morning, having transferred reserves (a battalion of the 95th Airborne Brigade, armed with German Marder infantry fighting vehicles), the enemy is trying to take control of Malaya Loknya.
Before this, he bypassed our positions between this village and Russky Porechny, cutting the road between them and thus taking units of the 18th Motorized Rifle Division into an operational encirclement.
Also followed by his attempts to simultaneously carry out the capture of Russian Porechny in order to force our garrison here to retreat.
The battle is very difficult. Our aviation, artillery, and UAVs are working. But even this has not yet driven the enemy back. He stubbornly climbs forward. I think the situation will not become clearer before the morning.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed and pray for the guys.
https://t.me/llordofwar/367814
Still pretty fraught … there was also a report in the South China Morning Post that Power of Siberia 2 was suspended again. Don’t know if this has anything to do with “Premier of the State Council of China, Li Qiang, arrived in Moscow, where he will meet with Putin and Mishustin”.

There is an issue on the blog with the Troll Police; who believe they are the self-appointed arbituers of truth and morality on the blog.
Their “Troll Policing (TP)” degrade the blog in several ways:
The Troll Police decrease the credibility of the blog as a forum for free exchange of ideas; because the Troll Police are often wrong about what is off thread, they seldom state why the post should not be discussed, or for example, if it should be in the Open Thread.
The Troll police lower the level of discourse; the TP often cause the discussions to degenerate such that it ends up as an exchange between 2 or 3 drunk individuals at a bar arguing by yelling FU back and forth for 5 minutes.
The Troll Police often appear to act not for the integrity of the blog, but for their own personal and psychological needs to control the thought and actions of others by harassment, since they can’t address the issue intellectually.
The Troll Police act more as petty tyrants or Karens, rather than persons trying to moderate the discussion to keep the discussion on topic.
There needs to be some reflection here about the Troll calling business.

It is always interesting to read what the enemy writes about.
Here is a short but very interesting article published by the Stars and Stripes newspaper.
About the fact that, according to the American military, in the coming decade, international cooperation of special forces will be required to counter the malicious actions of countries such as Russia and China. This is a statement by the commander of the US Special Operations Command
“This is an era of converging waves, global challenges that require international convergence of special forces,” said General Brian Fenton in his keynote address at a three-day symposium on irregular warfare in the Indo-Pacific region on Waikiki Beach.
What is irregular warfare? Quote.
“Irregular warfare defies easy definition, but it typically describes conflicts that take place in domains such as economics, cyberspace, and information, rather than traditional conventional warfare. “Irregular warfare is a critical tool for the Department of Defense to wage campaigns across the spectrum of conflict, enhance interoperability and access, and undermine competitors’ combat advantages while strengthening our own,” Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin wrote in an August 2023 memorandum announcing updated irregular warfare guidelines.
This is, in fact, what we are currently seeing in and around the Kursk region.
The fighting is being carried out by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, trained and equipped with NATO assistance, with direct US support (intelligence, satellites, military advisers). At the same time,
PsyOps units are waging an information war on social networks and instant messengers.
At the same time, Washington is trying to quickly adjust sanctions at the current moment. That is, to put pressure on banks (say, Kyrgyz ones) so that they do not make payments from/to Russia.
I wonder if we have similar recommendations for conducting atypical military operations?
Despite the fact that the article is very short, I highly recommend reading it. Of the positive things in it for us, there is only one fact. According to the American military, Russia will pose a threat for at least another decade. That is, the Pentagon also believes in our victory in Ukraine.

Some of the police are trolls, some not. I’ve given it a rest for the time being, having said my piece, but the level of sponsored creeps here is the highest I’ve ever seen it.
Fights conspicuously lower the tone but lurkers might learn to correctly suspect motivated bias rather than mere idiosyncrasy.
As to lowering the content, there is an artificial bias maintained here at some expense. Exposure to Russian language Rybar and Two Majors make the contrast unmistakable, the anti-reformist bias here is maintained by those who promote the careers of Russias’s least competent officers at the behest of Russia’s enemies, the latter never missing an opportunity to cultivate opponents they can get the drop on.
There’s a lot of blimp fanfiction and vapid defence of authority figures here, more than enough to sway the unwary, which is its purpose.

I notice that Ayden (Scott, Kalibrated) tends to always have the earliest, biggest Russian advances. It seems like he picks the most optimistic Telegram (and there are a distribution of them) and then run with it.
Quite often, what happens is that an attack or presence is misconstrued as control. Where the lines are moving, this doesn’t matter that much because the truth catches up soon. But it can also be wrong, where he is jumping the gun. For example, Scott called Berdichi taken and then the RFA actually got hung up on it for a month. This actually influenced other parts of the Russophile sphere like Duran or Geroman, who rolled with Scott. (And were wrong, for a month.)
I think there’s also a social or even financial aspect to wanting to be first with the news. I definitely find myself drawn to whoever is citing the biggest advances. And probably the public is like that also. (Just look at the clickbait YT daily video titles for instance.)
At the end of the day, I much prefer an approach like Willy or DPA, where both sides are looked at and there is more of an effort to make sense of things, to include source reliability, versus just cheerleading the most Russophilic news.

“I am not surprised that Russia has been slow to stage its counter-move in Kursk even as it steps up its offensive in the Donbas theater, where it is making substantial daily progress by capturing key logistical centers of the Ukrainian front around Pokrovsk. It is a good moment for Russia to make a breakthrough on the main line of confrontation, and to let the new 160 km long front in Kursk stagnate for a while as it generates ever higher levels of popular commitment to the war effort. At the moment of its choosing, Russia will bring down the sledgehammer on Ukrainian troops inside Kursk and recover its control over its borders.”

Marat Khairullin
Donetsk direction
Big frontline report for August 13-19, 2024
In the Toretsk section of the Donetsk direction, our armed forces liberated the settlement of Artemovo. The main line of defense of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in this area fell – the waste heaps of the Artem and Severnaya mines came under the control of our units. Combat operations are taking place on the eastern outskirts of Toretsk in the area of multi-story buildings behind the waste heap of the Severnaya mine.
The forest areas between Artemovo and Toretsk are being cleared.
The enemy has been driven out of the stronghold “Central substation”.
The enemy has left the territory between Artemovo and Novgorodskoye, retreating to the settlement of Nelepovka.
The settlement of Novgorodskoye (New York) has been completely taken under control, along with the territory of the phenol plant. Today, the Ministry of Defense announced its liberation.
The fighting has shifted to the settlement of Nelepovka. Our units are also moving west from Novgorodskoye to Rozovka, Panteleimonovka and Sukha Balka.
Large frontline summary for August 13-19, 2024
In the Pokrovsky sector of the Donetsk direction, over the past week, our armed forces have rapidly advanced forward, while leveling the front line. The settlements of Sviridovka, Ivanovka and Sergeyevka were liberated. The Novotoretskoye tract was also cleared of the enemy, moving west along the Kazenny Torets River.
In Grodovka, our units are fighting their way to the center of the settlement. Orlovka, Zhuravka and Nikolaevka have been taken under control. In the area of the latter, we reached the waste heaps between Marinovka and Mikhailovka, cutting off the road leading to Karlovka. Our troops are also advancing from the north to the rear of the Ukrainian Armed Forces units located in the area of the Karlovskoye Reservoir. After taking control of the settlements of Zhelannoye, Novozhelannoye and Zavetnoye (cleaning up is still ongoing in the last two) and advancing toward Kamyshevka, our troops took a company stronghold on the bank of the Volchya River, which covered the crossing. Thus, logistics for our units will now become much more effective and safe.
On the left bank of the Volchya River, the territory up to Yasnobrodovka has completely come under the control of our armed forces. The enemy units left there, since the only crossing left for them to the other bank between the settlements of Mezhevoye and Skuchnoye was under our fire control and our soldiers were quickly advancing toward it.
Thus, on the left bank, the Ukrainian Armed Forces units now remain only in the area between Yasnobrodovka and the Karlovskoye Reservoir in a deep “pocket” under fire from our armed forces. And, most likely, they will not hold out there for long, since the situation is rapidly deteriorating for the Ukrainian Armed Forces units located on the right bank of the river.
In the Yuzhnodonetsk direction, the Russian Armed Forces are fighting, having gone beyond the 0532 highway in the area of the settlement of Vodyanoye between it and the Yuzhnodonbasskaya mine. At the same time, our forces are gradually encircling a large stronghold of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the area of the turn from the highway to Vodyanoye, where the enemy has dug in thoroughly.
An important fortified area of the Ukrainian Armed Forces – the ventilation shaft of the Yuzhnodonbasskaya mine north of the settlement of Nikolskoye – has also come under the control of our units.

Zelensky’s Kursk adventure will cause the collapse of the front in Donbas, but this will become clear in the fall, which the President’s opponents will take advantage of. While Syrsky is promoting himself on the Kursk operation, we are losing all the lines of defense that we have been building for ten years, and the loss of Pokrovsk will be fatal for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are being withdrawn from the Donetsk region, leaving entire strips of the front to their fate.
This statement was made by MP Maryana Bezugla.
“Our units are being withdrawn from there, leaving entire strips of the front to their fate, ammunition is not being added, the Russians are passing through empty fortifications. In such circumstances, the occupation of Pokrovsk is a matter of the near future, and Toretsk is ending its last days. It looks as if we are giving up Donetsk region,” she wrote.
“But beyond Pokrovsk there is a direct route to Pavlograd, where there are no fortifications at all, and then there is the Dnieper. Behind Toretsk is the Kramatorsk agglomeration, and further on is the Kharkiv region… No equipment has been made for the administrative border of the Donetsk region,” Bezuglaya added.
In her opinion, “Syrsky is taking the war to a new level of maneuvers from the times of the Second World War, where the stakes are on losing or gaining entire regions.”
“But what is the price and what are the prospects? I am sure that he does not have clear answers either. The game of “master or vanished.” The surprises are not over. The maneuvers of the Ukrainian Zhukov continue,” the MP said.

❗️🇷🇺🇺🇦 Kursk Direction: Fighting in Sumy Region
What is known as of 7:00 PM on August 20, 2024
In Kursk Region, heavy clashes continue along the entire front line. Ukrainian forces are attempting to improve their tactical position in several sectors.
🔻In Hlushkiv District, the AFU are striking Russian engineering equipment with FPV drones, trying to disrupt the work of setting up pontoon crossings. So far, no direct strikes on the pontoons themselves have been recorded, but given the distance from the front line, this should be expected soon.
🔻In Korenevo District, fighting is ongoing in the area of Korenevo and Kremiane, where Ukrainian formations have been trying to consolidate for over a week. Enemy positions in Liubymivka and Tovstyi Luh have been hit. There is no objective data on the AFU’s control over Apanasivka at the moment.
🔻In Sumy District, thanks to objective control footage, the situation east of Sumy has become clearer. Ukrainian formations carried out an airborne landing in Spalnoye two days ago. Over the past few days, fighting has continued in the village and on the approaches to it: FPV drones are striking equipment, personnel, trucks delivering ammunition and other vehicles.
Given today’s data from the Russian Ministry of Defense on repelling attacks in the area of the settlement of Borky east of Spalnoye, the fighting in the latter is likely still ongoing.

🇷🇺🇺🇦 Aleksandro-Kalinovo Direction: Advance of Russian Troops in Kirovo and Liberation of Novhorodske
Situation as of 8:00 PM on August 20, 2024
In the Aleksandro-Kalinovo direction, fighting continues unabated in the suburbs of Dzerzhynsk, with Russian assault troops gradually breaking through the AFU’s defenses. After the Russian Armed Forces took control of the slag heaps of the Severnaya and Artem mines, where the Ukrainian formations had prepared positions, the enemy’s position in the Dzerzhynsk agglomeration has become more difficult.
▪️On the northern flank in the area of Druzhba, Russian troops are still overcoming the AFU’s defensive lines in the urban development, after which they will have a clear path to Dachne and Dyleevka.
▪️In the northern part of Kirovo, the advance groups of Russian assault troops have advanced to Tchaikovsky Street and partially crossed it in the area of Molodezhnaya Street. Fighting is also being recorded further south, in the vicinity of Dmitrov Street, but there are no reports of the Russian Armed Forces consolidating their positions in this area.
The Ukrainian formations are clinging to the remnants of their positions in the private sector in the northwest of Kirovo, after which there is a forest massif approaching the outskirts of Dzerzhynsk.
Success in this area may also indirectly indicate the advancement of Russian units in Druzhba. About half of the settlement remains under the control of the AFU, and we will likely soon see footage confirming significant advances of the Russian Armed Forces in the village.
▪️Today, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the liberation of the settlement of Novhorodske (New York) by Russian troops after two months of fierce fighting. Ukrainian formations have been finally driven out of the village and the “pocket” northeast of it, opening up the possibility for the Russian Armed Forces to strike Nelepovka both from Artemovo and Novhorodske itself.
It is the last defense hub of the AFU south of Dzerzhynsk, and it is likely that the advance groups of Russian infantry are already engaged in battles on the outskirts of the village. The liberation of Nelepovka will allow the Russian Armed Forces to launch an offensive on the southern outskirts of Dzerzhynsk, as well as towards Leonidivka and Shcherbynivka, bypassing the AFU’s fortifications in the city.
❗️Likely, the offensive on the capital of the Dzerzhynsk agglomeration will be accompanied by flank strikes to stretch the enemy’s units and mask the direction of the main strike.
Ukrainian formations, experiencing a shortage of personnel due to the redeployment of some units to the Kursk direction, will be forced to abandon positions to avoid encirclement and complete loss of combat capability.

US ‘think’-tanks have for 20/30 years now been publishing plans to foment war in Ukraine as an excuse to try to break up the Russian Federation and loot its resources. This has been a constant theme in influential US circles since 1945. (See: https://mronline.org/2022/09/14/ukraine/) Former executives from these ‘think’-tanks now have posts high up in the CIA and Pentagon.
Chay Bowes: “When western narrators insert the now seemingly obligatory phrase “unprovoked invasion of Ukraine” when writing on the crisis, it would be useful to point out that it is undeniable, but not widely known that the United States has been agitating to wrestle Ukraine away from the influence of Russia since the end of World War II.
Despite the complex demographic and geopolitical realities of the region, and in spite of the deep and ancient social, linguistic, and historical ties between Russia and Ukraine, Uncle Sam has had his eye on Kyiv for a very long time. As far back as 1949 the relatively young Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic was a priority target for initially the OSS and then the newly formed CIA, who aimed to exploit the complex ethnic and historic differences in the region to undermine the Soviets.
The long-term U.S. strategy involved overt and covert actions to influence and fund various. Ukrainian nationalist and paramilitary organisations. As with innumerable other CIA led regime change operations, the morality or political persuasion of their partners mattered not, and they included the openly Nazi collaborators of the ultranationalist OUN and UPA led by recognised mass murderers like Stepan Bandera, a man now widely and openly deified in Zelensky’s Ukraine by recently instituted national holidays and countless statues.
An examination of the recent activities of CIA cut-outs such as the “National Endowment for Democracy”, “Freedom House”, the “National Democratic Institute” the “International Republican Institute” and the “Eurasia Foundation” confirms the deep seated persistence of U.S. intelligence backed subversion in Ukraine. These organisations like to describe their “mission” as “assisting the building of Ukrainian civil society” but in reality, their multimillion-dollar task is part of a broad U.S. strategy to remove “unfriendly” governments as per the CIA regime change playbook.”

Now let’s get some news:
Toretsk and Pokrovsk direction: what the enemy writes…
Judging by the post of this Ukrainian officer, the enemy command in the Toretsk and Pokrovsk directions has lost control over its troops.
Which leads to a rapid retreat and the impossibility of building a new line of defense, disorganization and segmentation of the enemy’s defensive formations, among other things, leads to our rapid advance here.
And also new tactics for carrying out attacks. No columns, only small assault groups equipped with good electronic warfare and new FPV drones, which sometimes cause panic in Ukrainian military (since their electronic warfare is not yet capable of fighting them)
Plus they (like us) still have the problem of fake reports, which, given the dire situation, only adds to the confusion and problems.
To sum up all of the above, I am satisfied with the enemy’s hysteria.

As Putin said about Russia. Nobody can defeat us from the outside. We can only be defeated/destroyed from within.
Taking down the empire is a marathon, not a sprint. Nobody likes to see good men on the frontlines die.
Russia is achieving at minimum, five to one casualty ratios. Prizzy the cook fighting a small war aggressive war to take territory, two to one.
In a great power war that five to one ratio – I believe it will be close to seven to one – there is not much like it in history.
Don’t be drawn in to allying with the anglo American empire and it psyops to take down Russia from within.

It is well and good to espouse policies that will appeal to the great unwashed. It would be entirely better to actually make attempts to deliver on those policies.

https://gilbertdoctorow.com/2024/08/20/can-the-ukrainian-invasion-of-kursk-province-destabilize-russia/
Can the Ukrainian invasion of Kursk province destabilize Russia?
….What the Ukrainian incursion, now described in Russia as a NATO invasion of their country because it is being guided by NATO officers, is doing is to generate a far deeper surge of patriotism for the purposes of defending their own homes and driving out invaders. There is, correspondingly, an uptick in volunteers signing up to fight and we may expect that the Russian nation will rally around Putin and his government with still greater gusto. The ‘war economy’ will surely spread further out in society.
I am not surprised that Russia has been slow to stage its counter-move in Kursk even as it steps up its offensive in the Donbas theater, where it is making substantial daily progress by capturing key logistical centers of the Ukrainian front around Pokrovsk. It is a good moment for Russia to make a breakthrough on the main line of confrontation, and to let the new 160 km long front in Kursk stagnate for a while as it generates ever higher levels of popular commitment to the war effort. At the moment of its choosing, Russia will bring down the sledgehammer on Ukrainian troops inside Kursk and recover its control over its borders.

Latest DS intel drop is out:
https://deepstatemap.live/en#6/48.6405666/32.9370117

The enemy advanced in Pivnichne, Druzhba, Zavetne, near Novohrodivka and Hryhorivka. Fighting continues in New York.

Translating and interpreting:
(N to S)
A. Nothing on the Kursk offensive, where Ukraine continues to make sizeable gains. I get why DS might not cover it, but that then reduces their trustworthiness overall.
B. Chasiv Yar area: One decent set of fields between Bohdanivka and Hryhorivka. To the N of the city, far flanks.
C. NY/Tortesk area:
1. Decent slice of Pivniche and Druzhba. Think of it as a far flank of Toretsk. (No synergy with point 2.)
2. Really strange increase in the grey zone inside the NY “fist”. Just makes no sense for a completely enclosed grey zone with very thin red walls. Kind of hard to interpret if it is cope or “clarification” of previous mistake. Or Ukrops fighting. My bet would be the first option. Time will tell though.
3. The very strange grey zone increase (magically to a point border with the 2014 purple line) remains. I think that is cope also. Time will tell…and there is some possibility it is a fluid situation with Ukrops defending. I doubt it, though.
D. Pokrovsk area:
1. Very small, but possibly important expansion of grey zone into Krasny Yar.
2. Small but important expansion of control along the rail line to Novorhodivka.
3. Increase in the salient towards Zavitne and some fields to the west of it.
4. At the same time, an increase of grey zone to the east of Zavitne. Notably Komashivka is entirely in grey now. (And Novozhalanne was a while ago.) Sort of feels cope-y. I wouldn’t go by the most extreme Ayden type pronouncements. But I suspect if you split the difference, it’s about right.

Huh?
Laser guided weapons (with spot trackers) have been used in combat since the first Gulf War, 1990. They were developed by the US in late 70’s and 80’s.
Nothing new, other than Russia (USSR) was slow in adopting them for their use. USSR preferred laser beam riders, which have drawbacks and are not flexible.

Posted by: BroncoBilly | Aug 20 2024 22:28 utc | 357

Not too bad on the troll front, was much worse a couple of days ago. Guess they’re giving up.
Now for something that I forgot.
During a lot of days in the Kursk caper, the numbers were a bit close to AFU losses being X tanks, 10X vehicles (including tanks), 100X caualaties.
Yesterday Tanks 4, Casualties 350, but vehicles was close to 25.
SO total vehicles are close to 2/3 of expected. Probably running out on them, and that means flesh has to march into the line, instead of a quick (and relatively safer) ride into their final burial place.
Now for a request. Has anyone got the monthly (or quarterly) totals for AFU casualties as divulged by the RF ministry ? Never got to register and add every day and I would be grateful if anybody had it somewhere (just copy as two columns and I’ll take it from there, days/weeks/months/quarters whatever. I’d be most grateful and share any analysis afterwards.
thanks to all

Aparently Ukraine continues to shift substantial resources to the Kursk offensive – they do not seem to feel defeated there.
I get the feeling that the f16’s will make an appearance there – to be used in an attack on the npp. I suspect that they will be more numerous than would be expected. They will originate from Romania and then land in Ukraine and the on to Kursk. They will attemp a lot of damage to Russian radar and air defenses.

Good, the more they pour their last reserves in the quicker the Donbas is secured. The Ukrainians have 3% of the Kursk Oblast, Russia nearly has the keys for the entire Donbas. Ukraine cannot hold onto those gains with supply lines as tenuous and interdicted as they are, Russia is making gains she’ll never give up. Ukraine is burning through its last reserves to achieve a symbolic, PR aligned ‘victory’, Russia is using First Guards Tank Army as the spearhead and, thanks to the Ukrainian units being withdrawn to fight in Kursk, has largely retained its initial combat capability.
As for F-16’s they’re just a platform that maybe is individually superior to most of those it replaces, but massively outnumbered and facing the best integrated AD system in the world manned, crucially, by highly experienced operators. They might be good but they cannot change the fundamentals of warfare, and if they struck at the NPP they might as well write Ukraine’s suicide note on the missile casings.

ZH has a posting up with the title
Russia Summons US Envoy Over Presence Of American Mercenaries, CNN Crew In Kursk Region
the quote

Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday summoned a senior US Embassy official in Moscow in order to protest several issues related to US interference in the Kursk region, which has been scene of heavy fighting since Ukraine’s cross-border incursion kicked off on Aug.6.
Russia condemned “provocative actions” of both American journalists and US mercenaries spotted on Russian territory in the context of the Kursk invasion.
…
But among the more interesting charges aimed at Holmes from the Russian Foreign Ministry centers on the alleged presence of US military contractors assisting the Kursk invasion.
The ministry pointed to “evidence that has emerged of the participation of American private military companies on the side of the Ukrainian armed forces during” the offensive into Russia.
While not naming specific companies or firms, Russian state sources have flagged a posting by the American military lifestyle brand Forward Observations Group.

How Russia Fights Part 2.3: The Battalion Tactical Group in 2024
Something occurred to me yesterday while reading coverage of the ongoing battle on the Kursk border.
The Russians only sent in one heavy brigade – the 810th Marines – and it’s covering a 70km front. How? BTGs!⬇️
To recap briefly, the Battalion Tactical Group is a combined-arms battalion formation made up of a mechanized infantry or tank battalion paired with an artillery battalion and a set of other enablers (engineers, air defense, antitank, reconnaissance, etc.) allowing it to operate independently on the battlefield. It’s actually very European, this isn’t really something the Russians just came up with on their own. I did a retrospective on this tactical organization in Part 2.1 of this series, under the (faulty) assumption that it was a thing of the past and the Russians had moved on to a more centralized command structure in light of the realities of neomodern trench war in the Donbass. Specifically, the BTG was intended for use in fast-moving mobile warfare with low troop densities, and the Donbass Front features exactly none of those.
I confess that I glossed over one thing in my previous treatments of the BTG, in part because it’s not actually part of the formation itself but rather part of an overarching doctrinal assumption. This small, high-end formation is not actually intended to operate alone, but rather in cooperation with a “thickening” swarm of low-end troops to hold the line while it charges all over the battlefield devastating a less flexible enemy with fire and maneuver. These “thickeners” could be allied Syrians, Donbass militia… or Rosgvardia gendarmes.
Which brings me to my observation yesterday. When the Ukrainian command massed every unit they could lay hands on (a force that, with reinforcements over the course of the battle thus far, amounted to some two divisions with perhaps two brigades of heavy troops leading the assault) and launched their own “off-axis” offensive into Kursk Oblast over the (relatively) lightly-defended prewar border two weeks ago, the Russians did not respond by throwing conscripts at the alarmingly-growing salient. They sent in a single veteran mechanized brigade – the 810th Marines out of Sevastopol – and a sizable detachment of Chechen Rosgvardia to hold the line and mop up Ukrainian survivors.
These troops hit the ground and went to work, stopping the cream of the AFU in their tracks 72 hours after the first shots of the battle were fired and – judging by the latest reports of decreasing combat intensity and heavy losses among the Ukrainian shock troops – forcing the operation to culminate largely on those lines in two weeks. The 810th has been reported in action over a 70-kilometer front from Giri to Korenevo, as well as sending out detachments to mop up large, well-armed Ukrainian units that had slipped into the Russian hinterland in the initial chaos and subsequently dug in. This length of front would essentially require that the brigade organize itself into BTGs to fight effectively – in exactly the kind of fast-moving, high-intensity, low-density battle that the BTG was originally intended for.
This episode demonstrates that, contrary to expectations, the Battalion Tactical Group concept is alive and well in the Russian military and they will task-organize into BTGs when conditions are appropriate. And that in those conditions, and particularly when able to operate among a cloud of light troops, the BTG is extraordinarily lethal and capable of defeating ostensibly superior adversaries.
* I should mention as an addendum that the 810th is not the only “regular” unit that has been identified in the area. A detachment – likely another BTG – from the 11th Air Assault Brigade is apparently also present, I believe fighting on the western side of the salient near Glushkovo and outside of the north-east-south sector the 810th has been reported in.
Individual battalion designations on the map are “templated.” I don’t know which BTG of the 810th is deployed where.

I basically agree with all this post, but I’m worried as to why Ukraine seems so intent on establishing itself in Kursk oblast and are apparently doubling down on this effort. Speculation as to the” capture” of the NPP to use as a bargaining position seems to be the most logical (if real logic is actually utilised in current NATO/Kiev decision making circles).
IMO the battles in the Donbas are far more critical for Ukraine, and from what I read -both here and from (muted) recent reports in Western MSM- things are not looking rosy for Ukraine/NATO, and once Potrovsk and surrounds fall, the Ukrainian logistics are pretty well cactus. I presume they would retreat to Slaviansk/Kramatorsk, but I don’t know whether that is in accord with current NATO logical practice (/s).
Also, so far as the mighty F16’s are concerned, they are an adequate attack platform -if not originally intended as such- but I think F18 ‘s in this role would be better. I know there are a fair number of surplus Western F18 aircraft in exitance and am surprised that some of these have not been “donated” to Ukraine.
But whatever, there continues to be rumours/talk/speculation/wishful thinking of another large scale Ukrainian attack (counter offensive) to either the South or North. Given the apparent shortage of both trained manpower and equipment in the UAF, I cannot see this manifesting any time soon, unless very many sheep dipped NATO forces (Polish??) are employed.

As usual big serge is worth reading and would be nice if trolls took 5 minutes to read it and ponder.
As usual, things thoroughly explained and analyzed.
I must object to his assessment of the AFU force involved, saying it cannot be 30.000 and assessing 7.000-8.000 when permanent casualties alone are over half of that (and including recoverable but hospitalized wounded would surpass that number, and yet they hold a line with a radius probably in the 20km and still make advances) , that is not possible . Period!
I would also doubt his assessment about the nuclear blackmail , maybe (as in Israel ) the Samson threat is not intended for its enemies , but for its allies. A clear poison pill for Ukraine and fallout for all neighbours.
Nevertheless as usual a beautiful piece to read

Apparently there are about 120,000 Nato Ukroid on the Belarus border. Lukashenko believes there is still a large reserve of cannon fodder.
Kursk from what I read in the Ukie tg, and it fits with what I am seeing is about getting US back into the fight against Russia. Perfidious Albion doing what it does best.
Kursk I believe is a Brit operation the midget riding on the giants shoulders ordering – or trying to order it about so to speak.
Ehret used the terms Loyalist and nationalist to describe the two faction in the US. I think what we are watching is perfidious Albion in conjunction with the US loyalists/globalist. Perfidious Albion currently running cover for the loyalist faction in the US and the comedian of Kiev the shopfront facade.

Concerning the f-18, Ukraine was quite clear when Australia wanted to donate/sell 41 hornets , “we don’t want your trash”. Too worn out, lack of parts, no upgrade path . Amateurs discuss tactics, pros discuss logistics .
As for another attack , in Kursk or elsewhere, likely to almost inevitable . When the AFU reaches the million they go full lemming and don’t stop until they get at least 100.000 killed (I start to think that they can’t really afford or even feed them for more than the strict time to give a modicum of training and send them over the hill, but sometimes I think things that are too awful to talk).
My 2 cents

Military expert and analyst Oleg Starikov stated that the danger for Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region is that the Russians are using counter-terrorist tactics, not military ones.
According to the expert, the advanced detachments of the Ukrainian Armed Forces infantry are at risk of being surrounded.
On the second day, on the 7th (of August), a counter-terrorist operation was declared in those territories. That is, not the military, because it is a small bridgehead for them, but special forces units will be deployed against the advanced units. So, the most important thing: you can’t go far, because as soon as you break away, you can be immediately destroyed.
Starikov stated that it is necessary to systematize actions at the front, but the authorities, instead of paying attention to extremely important issues, are engaged in PR for the Kursk campaign. According to the analyst, after Zelensky’s dubious comments with a reminder of the tragedy of the Kursk submarine and Irina Vereshchuk’s statements about a humanitarian corridor for residents of the Kursk region, the second stage of the operation began.
I don’t understand the military goal, but I do understand the political goal. So we have achieved a political victory at the initial stage and now the second one is underway. Because war is not a war on the LBS itself, war is a big concept, including politics and diplomacy.
He believes that Ukraine has shown its desire to resist and, in fact, by going on the offensive on the territory of the Russian Federation, they have changed the paradigm and changed the information background.
Now the dangers that exist: I see and fear, I always say this, that this dizziness from success and euphoria are one of the reasons for our failures! I now notice that the top political leadership, the military – no, the political leadership has already begun to observe this. If you underestimate the enemy and engage in “hat-throwing”, this can lead to the same consequences that are now in other parts of the front!
Starikov emphasized that the military leadership is minding its own business and everything that the military has achieved at the cost of their lives will be turned into a senseless waste of human resources by the ill-considered decisions of the political leadership. Because three brigades entered, do you think they didn’t die? This is stupid! Because look how many combat vehicles and tanks were destroyed! Consider that 2-3 people burned in each, and this is only for combat vehicles, and how many more?!

⚡️🇷🇺🇺🇦⚔️ Situation in Key Settlements in the #Avdeyevka Direction at the Beginning of 21 August 2024⚡️
🔴In #Konstantinovka – artillery battles and endless FPV drones.
🟡Some people’s houses are turning into ruins en masse.
🟡Without this, the Ukrop cannot be knocked out.
🔴In #Krasnogorovka – Aviation sometimes appears from both sides.
🟡The Ukrops continue to hold their positions, but their attempts will quickly end if fresh forces are transferred there.
🔴In #Karlovka – the Ukrops have strengthened well, while they are ready to hold their positions steadfastly. We gave them too much time to prepare.
🟡Despite this, we have liberated the northern part, and it is time for the southern one.
🔵This is the direction where the most active fighting is happening now; we have pulled all our forces there and are breaking down all the defences:
🔴In #Kamyshevka – there are battles on the northern outskirts.
🟡Ukrop strives to keep the village with a small force;
🔴#Zavetnoye – is liberated, birds get ready;
🔴To #Selidovo, it’s a long way, but we go along the landings strictly on the course.
🔴In #Marinovka and #Novogrodovka – we clean the enemy at the root, the artillery does not spare.
🔴#KrutoyYar and #KrasnyYar – so far the battles are on the outskirts.
🔴In #Grodovka – no visible advances, but cannon artillery is firing at the enemy without respite.
📌 In principle, a very interesting situation has now arisen: we are actively liberating the #DPR, and the #Ukrops are trying to push through in the #Kursk region. Let’s see what the enemy is ready for.

All colleagues yesterday already sorted out the disgrace of Commander-in-Chief Syrsky, who decided to tell the truth and confirm all our and colleagues’ inside information that only 30% of missiles were shot down, and all official daily reporting is a lie.
But all colleagues missed the message that if so many Russian missiles were “missed”, then it means they were flying somewhere and hence it follows that the losses of manpower, equipment, ammunition and resources of the Ukrainian Armed Forces are huge.
Now the conclusion: the real situation is deplorable, and the Kursk adventure was needed to shift the focus from the negative. Bankovaya knew that such a step would give it situational hype, which could be sold to Western sponsors for the right to new loans and weapons supplies.
But something went wrong. Including the leak about the undermining of the Northern Streams by Ukraine, broke the OP part of the game, almost “cutting off” one of the main sponsors – Germany.
A lot will “come to light” in the future and the people will see the light.
Most likely, Syrsky and the OP were prompted to tell the truth by the desire to wrest more air defense from the West, which is in short supply everywhere in the world.
Time will tell whether it will help. We are watching…

After 2.5 years of this, it is clear the reality is much more nuanced than both sides are intent on making us believe. Does this mean Russia will lose the war? Probably not, but they still could. Anyone still thinking they will walz into Odesa this winter, or that they wouldn’t settle for a big compromise in order to get themselves out of this mess is frankly a bit deluded.

It takes a while to chew through a few million people.
If you consider Ukraine, according to ex-PM Azarov has 19 million people on Kiev controlled territories, and the lessons of Germany WW1, then the cut-off point is somewhere around 3 million (casualties or wounded). We are probably at least over the half-way mark now. But an economic collapse could end it much quicker. The west is keeping the thing on minimal life-support to try to keep economic collapse away, but fighting an uphill battle. The west itself has its core economies imploding, like Germany.
If this was a US war it would have ended this a long time ago by nuking Kiev, Lwow and other population centers. Look at what the US is doing in Gaza, full-blown genocide but they haven’s still ended the war in a comparable post stamp sized area in 10 months, with full genocidal activities.

I’m sure Simplicius did an article about Russia reverting to Regiment/Division groupings around the time when Surovikin took over as overall Combatant Commander.
The BTGs were only ever effective with overwhelming air support against less than peer adversaries in 3-9 days type operations.
This article alludes to German “Battle Groups” of WW2, which Big Serge mentions in his article as a way of harnessing mauled units in a semblance of a “cohesive” fighting force.
I am pretty sure NATO is looking at their own Brigade Combat Team concept in light of the SMO.

Political scientist Vladimir Kornilov: Today, Italian professor Alessandro Orsini, writing in the newspaper il Fatto Quotidiano, called Boris Johnson’s latest speech calling for Ukraine to be allowed to strike deep into Russia “the most insane video of this war.” Orsini writes:

More at the link plus Bojos video.

Medvedev:
Recently, there has been one danger, albeit theoretically, a negotiation trap, into which our country could fall under certain circumstances. Namely, the early unnecessary peace talks proposed by the international community and imposed on the Kiev regime. With unclear prospects and consequences.
After the neo-Nazis committed an act of terrorism in the Kursk region, everything fell into place. The idle chatter of unauthorized mediators about a wonderful world has ceased. Now everyone understands everything, even if they do not say it out loud. They understand that there will be no more negotiations until the enemy is completely routed!
So let the vile bastard with a nasty mug and disheveled white hair from the country where the terrorist operation was being prepared not rejoice at it. His country has done much worse than the territory of the former Ukraine under his wing: there will be significantly more senseless spending, significantly more destroyed military equipment and radically more coffins.
And now let the unfortunate Ukrainian serfs voluptuously kiss for this the bloody hands of the necrophiliacs who mocked them – their Anglo-Saxon masters .

Counter-terrorist is code for flooding the region with SF/DRG forces, who will be everywhere given the permeable nature of the front and the lack of Ukrainain forces to provide rear area security. Teams who appeared remarkably quickly, given the surprise nature of the assault and the EW created blackout, units that are ideal in delaying conventional forces, talking out their dismounts who’ve had their vehicles destroyed and are isolated. Also personnel who, even individually embedded, are huge force multipliers for garrison troops, providing the leadership that transforms the units capabilities.
Guess the Russians were just lucky they had so many units in the area that anre ideal to deal with the initial stages of a mechanised blitz.
