Britain Claims To Have Helped With The Ukrainian Invasion Of Russia

Yves Smith is discussing the Washington Post report on Russia-Ukraine negotiation to end the infrastructure attacks:

An Admission of Russian Long-Term Weakness or More Complex Calculation?

I had previously discussed the WaPo piece here.

Yves suggests that the negotiations, if they really have happened as described, were an Ukrainian ruse to distract Russia from the Ukrainian preparation of the Kursk oblast incursion. The talks were useless for Russia, she says. She doubts that Russia would favor to stop the attacks on the Ukrainian electricity generating and network capabilities. She suggests that the Ukrainian attacks on Russia create little damage. It disagree with that view.

The winter will already become very difficult for Ukrainian civilians. There is no need to increase the damage on Ukrainian infrastructure beyond the already achieved level.

The Ukrainian attacks have so far created repairable damage in Russia. But that may not be the case forever. One day one of such attacks could in fact create some real catastrophe. The attacks are also binding lots of Russian resources. One needs a huge number of soldiers and equipment to give at least some protection to the most exposed sites. The Russian economy is currently short on men. Not diverting some 100,000 men for local air defense purposes can make a difference.

I believe that Russia was genuinely interested in making such deal. But the Ukrainian attack on Kursk oblast blew it apart.

There are new suggestion on how the Ukrainian incursion into Russia was prepared for.

The Times in London claims that it largely followed a British plan (archived):

When footage of British Challenger 2 battle tanks being used by the Ukrainian army for its counterinvasion of Russia emerged on Tuesday, Downing Street and the Ministry of Defence were ready.

For the previous 48 hours, officials and political aides working for Sir Keir Starmer and John Healey, the defence secretary, had been in talks about how far to go to confirm growing British involvement in the incursion towards Kursk.

The stakes were high. Unseen by the world, British equipment, including drones, have played a central role in Ukraine’s new offensive and British personnel have been closely advising the Ukrainian military for two years, on a scale matched by no other country.

The U.S., in contrast, has claimed not to have known about the Ukrainian plans and there purpose. This leads Kit Klarenberg to develop a theory:

Kit Klarenberg @KitKlarenberg – 15:02 UTC · Aug 18, 2024

"🧵: I speculated earlier was probably Britain behind Kursk suicide op. Lo and behold, a Times article confirms this. More broadly, contents amply underline Kursk latest effort by London to keep the US in the proxy war – and it appears Washington has finally had enough of this.

Times reveals up top heavily promoted footage of British Challenger 2 tanks in Kursk was a conscious, deliberate decision made by new PM Keir Starmer and his defence secretary John Healey. British equipment is said to have "played a central role" in the "counterinvasion".

Starmer and Healey reportedly made the decision to advertise London's involvement "to be more open about Britain’s role in a bid to persuade key allies to do more to help." In other words, to encourage/pressure the US et al to double down on this unwinnable, nightmare quagmire.

However, US reportedly unhappy with Kursk incursion, because it scuppered peace talks. Kiev's purported culpability for Nord Stream bombing is, it seems, being used to justify ending German aid to Ukraine. And the US is blocking Kiev from firing British-made missiles at Russia.

Kit's theory is that the Washington Post story about the blown negotiations as well as the latest "Nord Stream done by Ukraine" rumor reporting by the WSJ are expressions of U.S. anger over the Ukrainian government and its Kursk invasion.

The Times also reports that Britain is pushing its allies to provide more weapons and to allow their use against targets deep inside of Russia:

In the coming weeks Healey will attend a new meeting of the Ukraine Defence Co-ordination Group, where Britain will press European allies to send more equipment and give Kyiv more leeway to use them in Russia. Healey spoke last week to Lloyd Austin, the US defence secretary, and has been wooing Boris Pistorius, his German opposite number.

Germany, whose Taurus missiles have a similar 155-mile range to Storm Shadow but a more powerful warhead, has been the country under the most pressure to move. However, it was revealed yesterday that Germany has actually frozen military aid to Ukraine because of a domestic budgetary crisis. Pistorius had asked for £3.4 billion of additional supplies but that was rejected by the finance ministry.

A previous leak provided that the long range Taurus missiles are complicate and have to be programmed just-in-time by German officers. There is no support in Germany for allowing such a deep involvement in attacks on Russia.

To me it seems that Britain has promised to Ukraine that it would get its allies to agree to the usage of longer range weapons against Russia in exchange for Ukraine to launch the attack on Russia.

Only that can explain this Zelenski complain about Starmer:

The Ukrainian president complained that British aid to Kyiv had begun to wane as his forces continued their unprecedented incursion into Russian territory in the Kursk region.

“Unfortunately, the situation has slowed down recently,” Mr Zelensky said, referring to UK military assistance.

Sir Keir has upheld a Conservative ban on using UK-made Storm Shadows to strike targets deep inside Russia, amid concerns it could lead to escalation with nuclear-armed Moscow.

“We will discuss how to fix this because long-range capabilities are vital for us. The whole world sees how effective Ukrainians are – how our entire nation defends its independence,” said Mr Zelensky.

It came as four former Conservative defence secretaries called on No 10 to do more to support Ukraine, with some demanding Kyiv be allowed to use Storm Shadows in the Russian offensive.

But it is not Starmer who is blocking the missiles, it is the U.S. of A. (archived):

Washington is in effect blocking Britain from allowing Kyiv to fire Storm Shadow missiles inside Russia, amid fears in the Biden administration of an escalation in the Ukraine war.

It is understood that although the UK wants to give Ukraine the freedom to do what they want with the long-range weapon, it requires consensus from allies, including the US, France and a third undisclosed Nato country. A government source stressed that the UK was not blaming the US for any delay, adding that such policy changes took time.

Combining all the above one can (re-)construct this story.

Britain, in a bipartisan move, wants to prolong the war in Ukraine. It suggested to and helped Ukraine to invade Russia even as it knew that this would interrupt peace talks in Qatar. It also promised to press its allies  for long range attack permission against Russia. But the U.S. and Germany are still blocking such attacks. Zelensky now complains that Britain failed to deliver on its promise.

The U.S., miffed about the British involvement in a likely useless Ukrainian attack on Russia, is leaking about the Ukrainian/Russian negotiations in Qatar.

The above is largely based on the U.S. claims that it was not really involved in the planing of the Kursk incursion.

There are of course good reason to doubt those claims:

As the Ukraine war enters its most perilous phase, with Kiev’s forces fighting inside Russia, the United States is operating a formal “sensitive activities” detachment that is active in providing direct military support to the beleaguered country. The detachment, never before disclosed, is run by U.S. special operations forces, and with its Ukrainian counterparts, provides on-the-battlefield support, including near-real time targeting intelligence, operators say.

An operator formerly deployed to the Army’s 10th Special Forces Group assigned to a sensitive activities detachment told me their work included the creation of clandestine human networks for intelligence gathering, as well as identifying Russian military weaknesses for targeting.

A second operator also described having been tasked with providing near up-to-the-minute intelligence support to Ukrainian forces.

Those U.S. operators in Ukraine certainly did not miss the preparations the Ukrainians were making for their attack.

P.S. Bonus from The Times piece:

“It’s not just about the military support, but it’s about the industrial, economic, and diplomatic support,” the defence source said. “If Putin succeeds in Ukraine he’s not going to stop there. But also the economic implications of that are massive, because we all saw how heavily Britain got hit when he first invaded.

Yes, the sanctions, intended to hurt Russia, were quite damaging to those who issued them. Nice to see that finally acknowledged.

Russia must take out at least one bridge on british soil. Naturally, one bridge in London comes to mind.
On top of that, Russia must take credit for it.
No offense, of course, if you think I’m an escalator, but enough is enough.
Russia must destroy OTAN, even if that means war (which it won’t).

Larry Johnson and many commenters here at MoA are wrong in putting so much blame on NATO. NATO does what NATO is supposed to do: find enemies for the anglosphere, try to weaken these enemines without getting hurt too much, and carry around a few other European races as minions.
The big story in this war is not NATO trying to weaken Russia (and failing). The big story is the depths of depravity of ukrop slavs betraying their own race, culture, families and identity for the chance to be anglo-minions.

Putin said if they would have sunk the British destroyer a few years back that was making incursion to Russian waters, it would not have started ‘WW3’. And he is probably right. The British have reached the limit of their escalation potential, excluding nukes. They can’t do anything. They are already committing as many terrorist attacks against Russians as they can. So they have reached the limit and couldn’t do a thing were British assets to get hit.

A big, splashy military operation milked for all the propaganda use possible, even though it serves no strategic purpose and is actually detrimental to more pressing needs?
Yeah, that’s got “Great Britain” written all over it.
Add “Ghost of Churchill” to the “Ghost of Kyiv”.
And probably fitting, as this Kursk incursion is going to end up like the Gallipoli landings.

If your enemy wants you to do something, such as providing a pretext for a war, it’s probably a good idea to think twice before doing it.
As far as I can see the bulk of the fighting, including the fighting in Russia proper, is going Russia’s way, in which case one needs to think very clearly about making any changes.
So long as the war in Ukraine continues NATO is very unlikely to start a war against China, which is all to the good. And it’s possible that the war in Ukraine will bleed NATO and weaken Europe, and thus indirectly weaken the US, which is also all to the good. Meanwhile, so long as Russia makes it clear that it would like to end the war and is willing to negotiate, the whole sane world outside NATO knows exactly what is going on.

NATO is but a vessel – a form, avatar, incorporation, call it what you want – for enforcement of “Western” hegemony on the rest of the world. Just like in Rome, conquered vassals which one way or another have come to love their oppressor and his ideology, are given some privileges, but are expected to contribute to the empire’s “mutual defence” with the usual pound (or five) of flesh…
“Ukrop slavs” belong to a special group of wannabe-vassals, “brown sahibs” who’ve become more Catholic than the pope himself, and as such aren’t the least unique, as much larger throves of said behaviour can be found in the deep west of “the Harlot of Babylon”. Funny enough, the gardening of neonazi chaff in Banderastan has been hearthily assisted by Uncle Sugar since its very beginnings post WWII, but of course you chosenites wouldn’t know anything about THAT part, right? I mean, how could you…?

Bridges in Kursk are being blown up in now the second week that Russia is still being occupied and 100-200k of its people are living in tents, instead of their own homes. Does that sound like a country that is winning? no. At the very least, it shows there is great incompetence, corruption and that they are stretched thin. Good luck if Finland and Sweden tried the same up north…

So, next time people ask why Putin doesn’t do more, perhaps consider that short of lobbing nukes, which could mean he can expect some in return, well, he can’t.
If small Ukraine is able to do this, imagine how things would look if it had long range missiles and another 500+ or so aircraft at its disposal (and that’s just counting those in Europe, you can add another 2,000 if the US got involved). And please, if Russia can’t even detect or disable the few airfields and planes left operating in Ukraine, how can one seriously believe it could do any better with those spread all across Western Europe and the USA, without having its own completely wiped out first as well?
Why has Russia lost a dozen ships to drones, while NATO doesn’t lose a single one in the Red Sea?
I think it’s about time people stop blindly listening to Martyanov, Ritter et al and their crap about this mighty and invincible Russian military, and try out some of the West’s own fake news too and formulate some of their own original analysis.
After 2.5 years of this, it is clear the reality is much more nuanced than both sides are intent on making us believe. Does this mean Russia will lose the war? Probably not, but they still could. Anyone still thinking they will walz into Odesa this winter, or that they wouldn’t settle for a big compromise in order to get themselves out of this mess is frankly a bit deluded.

I think we should try to understand the conflicts and overlaps between UK and US agendas.
The US, or some US players want to pull out from the Ukraine conflict in favor of other conflicts. They also don’t want to escalate the conflict. Whether they want to calm down the conflict is way less clear to me. They may be fine with Europe putting its full weight behind it and let it continue that way.
UK wants the conflict to continue and possibly to escalate, and they want to keep the US involved.
I don’t understand yet whether the Ukrainian negotiations were a big deal to the US either way, or whether the Kursk offensive is a big deal other than it threatening to speed up the course of the war. But then I also don’t understand the power play behind how Ukraine on one hand negotiates and then undercuts its own negotiations. It feels like the UK picking a more aggressive course with a bit of opposition from its allies but not much.

You are not too bright, are you?
In your lengthy, redundant post nowhere do you write about Russian conscripts.
Are you not aware that no conscripts can fight in Ukraine only in Russia proper?
Hence, Russian conscripts can be used to fight in the Kursk that otherwise would be just hanging round on guard duty; and Russia doesn’t have to move its regular army away from the Donbass front lines.
You are just as stupid as Zelensky and Syrsky-I think you would be more comfortable on Reddit.

Besides, I hope Moscow and Kiev will be separated by a permanent hatred.”
The mindset of the Anglo ruling class, in my opinion, is as above, and it is no surprise that they have done nothing but intrigue Ukraine’s surprise attack and interrupt the peace talk.
On peace they do nothing but sabotage.
If you recall, even right at the start of the SMO, Boris Johnson went out and advised Ukraine to rejecet the ceasefire agreement being offered by Russia.

Again, the usual BS of ‘small Ukraine this/small Ukraine that’ or ‘if America/Nato gets involved this/that’.
America/Nato is already massively involved in Ukraine. Every headline you read in western media of ‘Ukraine doing this/that’ is lies. No, Ukraine isn’t doing/can’t do anything else than provide bodies to utilize Nato weapons. Nato/America does everything else, including used their satellites to plan that Kursk attack by confirming weak points. And Nato/America provided thousands of additional troops to augment the attack. Even then, Ukraine had to pull many strong formations from Donbass to execute the attack.
Ukraine is a complete military dictatorship with absolute censorship and dissidence control controlled by a puppet regime who have absolutely no interest in the future survival of the state or people. That is the best (only) asset America/Nato can use to wage war with Russia without WW3 and obliteration of all Nato states.
Then you talk about the Eurovassals and America all attacking Russia together from European bases? That is not part of the game which is the proxy war in Ukraine. Russia actually disrupted all Nato efforts to build missile arming capable bases within Ukraine, which is why we haven’t seen F-16 used so far. Because they have to launch from Romanian/Moldovan (Nato) airfields. We may yet see them, but they were armed in Romania, which is another admission of Nato losing the proxy war.
And now we heard Germany has to withdraw economic support because Germany’s own economy is imploding. Germany is the core of Nato. Hello? NATO economies are collapsing. You can be sure they wouldn’t stop supporting Ukraine if it didn’t provide an existential threat to the EU or Nato.
Most likely scenario is the population of Ukraine, what’s left of it simply scatters west and east and state apparatus ceases to exist in a form we have known it.

I agree with all you wrote, and yet …

It is Nato that brainwashed the Ukrainan’s, turning them into mind dead Ukroids. A zombie army.

But this is what NATO is supposed to try to do. What is not supposed to happen, is ukrops turning themselves into zombies for NATO. Focus must be on that phenomenon. Imagine Texans turning rabidly anti-America. Is not the same as Texans wanting to be Texans or even independent. It is Texans becoming rabidly, suicidally anti-America. This is what happened in the Ukraines. Ukrop slavs turned rabid-suicidal against their mothers, fathers, brothers, cousins, language, culture, genes!

The was a nucleus there but all that is required is to look at voting patterns prior to 2014, language/dialect, monuments to either Bandera or Lenin.

Voting patterns prior to 2014 reflected the demographic weight of Eastern Ukraine and Crimea. I make exceptions for those people. They are honorable slavs. What remains of the Ukraines is what I’m trying to call attention to. These peoples are the main responsibles for this debacle and for their potential extermination.
This is similar to peole saying the West raped Russia during the 90s. It was predatory Russians who raped Russian in the 90s, and Putin was the cure.
This focus on NATO as main culprit of this war feels like hubris. We White Westerners cannot imagine a world where WE are not the main actor, for good or for bad. Maybe because we are Western dissidents, we want change in Our ideology and leadership. But this bias shall not interfere with the study of reality.

Why would you do that? the are high cost , unreliable generators that destabilize the grid and add to its complexity and cost.
A better plan would be to attack reliable baseload generators like to nuke plants and the larger inter connects to Europe. No need to attack the plants themselves just take out key points in transmission.
Leaving them with wind power would do more damage than destroying it.

All the people about me are no different. Easily brainwashed. Much depends on the leadership of a nation.
Some of the American ex servicemen, they swore an outh of loyalty to their constitution and even the Likes of Johnson and Ritter still hold to that. But in the US, people like that are a tiny minority and the ‘power structure’ is dominant.
In Russia it was different. Even at the end of the nineties, there was a very solid core in the intel and military that where uterly loyal to their country. Putin had been in both intel and civil admin and was also uterly loyal to his country. Although the oligarchs ruled, they were nowhere near as powerfull as the US pwer Structure and Putin was able to take them down. He had to have backing from core security and military services to be able to do that.
The geographical entity of Ukraine was a synthetic communist construct with no cohesive historical memory and easily destroyed.

An opinion piece by Andrew Latham @ The Hill
„ Ukraine’s Kursk offensive is a huge strategic error“
Excerpt:
„While the incursion has captured headlines and inflicted some measure of psychological damage on Russia, such superficial victories do little to alter the fundamental dynamics of the conflict. Russia, despite its setbacks, remains a formidable military power with a vast arsenal and a nuclear deterrent. Ukraine, while demonstrating courage and resilience, faces a daunting challenge in overcoming this overwhelming disparity.
More critically, this diversion of forces from the main theater of war is a huge strategic miscalculation. Every soldier, tank and piece of artillery deployed in the Russian incursion represents a loss to the Ukrainian effort to liberate occupied territories. These resources, if concentrated on the front lines, could potentially yield tangible gains, weakening Russian defenses and creating opportunities for decisive breakthroughs.“

aristodemos @50: “Why the obsession with nukes? Russian spokesmen are generally men of their words…women as well as in Zakharova. They have iterated and reiterated that they will not exercise the nuclear option UNTIL and unless they are so assaulted FIRST.”
You are wrong. Perhaps you are misunderstanding Russia’s nuclear doctrine out of wishful thinking, but there is no requirement that the triggering attack on Russia be nuclear in nature. The attack merely needs to threaten the integrity and existence of the Russian state. The attack by the Empire can be purely conventional and if it threatens the Russian state, then a nuclear response by Russia is permitted within Russia’s nuclear doctrine.
Of course, the whole point of the Empire/NATO war in the Ukraine is to destroy the Russian state and “decolonize” the Russian Federation. The Empire has pretty much worn their Ukrainian battering ram down to a stub beating it against Russia, but they will continue to try to destroy Russia.
Try to understand: The Empire fully intends (and is indeed currently committing) acts which justify nuclear response within the context of Russia’s nuclear doctrine. That trigger point has already been passed. Russia’s integrity has been violated. There will be ongoing and escalating efforts to fragment and destroy the Russian state.
The Empire is decrepit and frail and losing its collective mind, so maybe it will die before dismembering Russia; but then again, maybe not.

SU25 Frogfoot/Grach fighter bombers, the Russian equivalent of the A10 Warthog, and KA52, the Russian equivalent of the Apache are devastating the UAF Sumy supply road to the Kursk salient.
Sat photos reveal dozens and dozens of UAF MBT’s, IFV’s, APC’s, 6×6’s, Humvees, etc., etc. destroyed at the side of the road…….its an armored boneyard at this point……..a massive pile of expensive destroyed equipment. Certainly this wreckage must send a very negative message to any UAF troops still attempting to move north in to the salient.
UAF forces are doomed, failed to reach their objective at the Kursk NPP, and should have been withdrawn days ago to conserve manpower and equipment, but have not been.

The bill banning the UOC has been adopted, but the bill has a 9-month delay. As the source explains, Zelensky decided to give HIMSELF 9 months to make a final decision in this case.
As usual, everything depends on many factors:
1. These are the US elections. If Trump wins, it is better not to touch it, and if the Democrats, they will close it.
2. The church purge of the UOC now could destabilize the situation inside the country, weaken even the army, and at a time of difficulty in the Kursk adventure and in Donbass, it could end badly.
3. They gave time so that others could buy out the “parishes” or register new ones and move somewhere. The time for great bargaining has begun.
4. Zelensky was afraid to start the purge of the UOC now, since the Kursk adventure failed.
According to our information, several versions of the bill were considered in the OP. In one of them, the ban came into force immediately, but it was abandoned.

german nazi-rag welt.de is at it again, three whole articles:

“Russian soldiers plunder their own countrymen in Kursk”

A video circulating on X shows a soldier who appears to be clearing out a cell phone store in Glushkovo in the west of the region. Anton Gerashchenko, advisor to the Ukrainian Ministry of the Interior, who published the video, attributes the soldier to the Chechen special unit “Akhmat”.

an “ukrainian” source of course…

No Russian required, but the right attitude – Putin makes immigration easier for foreigners

The offer should apply to all those who live in a country that “imposes destructive neoliberal points of view that contradict traditional Russian spiritual and moral values”. This is reported by the Russian news agency “Tass”, among others. The decree goes on to say that traditional values are still upheld in Russia.

the little jabs welt tries to do are adorable.
but the third article is the interesting one, sadly behind a paywall:

Why the Kursk operation accelerated Ukraine’s defeat

At first glance, the courageous offensive in Kursk is a success for Ukraine – because it has exposed Vladimir Putin. Nevertheless, Russia will ultimately benefit from the maneuver. Four reasons for this course of the war.

another little jab. sadly, without paying, we will never know “what” was actually exposed.

⚡️🇺🇦 There are documents in archives that are marked “Keep forever”. So we will forever leave in our archive a photo with the results of the vote in the Rada to ban the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church
We will comment a little later, but now let’s read together Article 35 of the Constitution of Ukraine:
Article 35 of the Constitution of Ukraine
Everyone has the right to freedom of thought and religion. This right includes the freedom to profess any religion or not to profess any, to freely perform religious cults and ritual rites, individually or collectively, and to conduct religious activities.
The exercise of this right may be limited by law only in the interests of protecting public order, health and morality of the population or protecting the rights and freedoms of other people.
The church and religious organizations in Ukraine are separated from the state, and the school is separated from the church. No religion can be recognized by the state as obligatory.
No one can be released from their duties to the state or refuse to comply with laws on the grounds of religious beliefs. If the performance of military duty contradicts the religious beliefs of a citizen, the performance of this duty must be replaced by alternative (non-military) service.

Kutuzov’s Theory in Action: The Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Kursk Plan Isn’t Working
As expedient as Ukraine’s plan to attack the Kursk region so that Russia can transfer some troops there from Donbas may seem on paper, it is not working yet, said international observer Catherine Gentil on LCI. The Russian army continues to advance in the direction that seems most important to it for the balance of forces on the front.
It is now much more important for Moscow to capture Pokrovsk, the largest logistics hub that supplies Ukrainian soldiers on the front line, Gentil notes. She draws attention to the fact that the Ukrainian Armed Forces crossed the border too easily and did not immediately encounter resistance: it is possible that this is a trap, and if the Ukrainians go too far, they will be surrounded.
LCI geopolitical consultant General François Chauvancy is not surprised that the Ukrainian troops are beginning to feel cornered: the deeper they penetrate into Russian territory, the more opportunities there are to attack them.
According to the expert, Kyiv is trying to present the offensive as a “success story” and to occupy Russian territory in accordance with international law. The general, however, does not see the possibility of doing this by military means: the goals of the breakthrough are unclear at first glance, and Ukrainian soldiers will have to control large territories, while they are needed in Donbas.
Former French Ambassador to Russia Jean de Gliniasty believes that Russia has applied the traditional “Kutuzov theory”: it sacrificed its territory in order to gain time to solve a priority task. Western experts were quick to call the delay in repelling the Ukrainian attack “complete disorganization” of the Russian army, but it simply has another priority task: to achieve a breakthrough in Pokrovsk.

Shoigu had more than enough time at the helm to make visible inroads on infrastructure protection and for his legacy as minister of defence to bear his imprint, the authority and responsibility to act was his.
The grounds to associate Shoigu with ongoing problems are substantial, it is your own argument of superficial comparison that is lacking in substance

❗️🇷🇺🇺🇦 Kursk Direction: Destruction of Ukrainian Armored Vehicles in Sudzha and Korenevo Districts
What is known as of 2:00 PM on August 19, 2024
The situation remains tense along the entire front line in the Kursk Region. The enemy is attacking with armored vehicle columns in various sectors, coming under fire from Russian Armed Forces armored vehicles and aviation.
🔻In the Glushkovo District, Ukrainian formations are trying to strike at pontoon crossings, including with FPV drones. The enemy is publishing satellite images, claiming that they have managed to disable one of the two crossings on the Seym River.
🔻In the Korenevo District, the AFU once again attempted to consolidate in the village of Korenevo. A column of Ukrainian armored vehicles even managed to drive along the highway on the eastern outskirts of the settlement towards Nikipelovka, where it was destroyed by precise JDAM strikes.
🔻In the Sudzha District, the configuration of the front line in the area of Malaya Loknya has been clarified. The forward positions of Russian troops came under fire from Marder 1A3 IFVs of the 95th Air Assault Brigade of the AFU. Thus, the Russian Armed Forces currently hold the lines in the area of Nikolayevka and Staraya Sorochina.
North of Russkoye Porechnoye, the configuration of the front line has also been clarified. Apparently, after the AFU armored vehicles were attacked by FPV drones in the village itself, Ukrainian formations managed to drive further north. Today, air strikes were carried out on enemy positions in the forest near the settlement of Nechaev.
To the southwest, several enemy armored vehicles managed to reach the village of Russkaya Konopelka. This is likely the same equipment that was recently attacked in the Agronom farmstead by FPV drones. The AFU fell into an ambush, and at least one of the vehicles was destroyed at point-blank range by an autocannon from a BTR-82A.

🇬🇧🇷🇺 The State Duma has proposed banning any activity by Deutsche Welle and the British Council in Russia.
The initiative was put forward by the Commission for Investigating Facts of Foreign Interference. The appeal states that the British Council, under the guise of humanitarian projects, is carrying out intelligence activities in Russia, while the media corporation Deutsche Welle, recognized as a foreign agent, not only actively stamps out information saboteurs, including from Russian journalists, but also conducts anti-Russian media campaigns.
▪️The organization is directly subordinate to the UK Foreign Office and operates in different countries under the cover of cultural formation, through which language exams are also conducted.
However, it is obvious that organizations with such a profile are a convenient tool for covert activities or recruitment in the host countries.
▪️As early as February this year, it was found that employees of the British government organization were engaged in military intelligence in the Kherson region. In particular, they tried to recruit local residents, including trying to obtain information from their relatives through Ukrainian refugees in the UK.
And even in peacetime, the British Council has developed a lot of activity in Russia, literally recruiting all the liberal opinion leaders, who happily began to work for foreign intelligence, for which they now receive the status of foreign agents.
▪️It is known that the British Council is one of the main parts of a multi-level anti-Russian network of agents of influence supervised by the British government. The tasks of these organizations include (and have included for many years) not only the search and training of loyal personnel, but also their cultivation already at the selection stage.
Thus, the UK has managed to acquire a mass of trained journalists, activists, sociologists, political scientists and other specialists in its arsenal, openly propagating Russophobic policies. Therefore, the ban on the activities of such a structure is a quite logical step on the part of the Russian authorities.

Potential Russian targets during a war escalation:
1. Take out undersea internet cables, cutting 90% of internet traffic to/from the UK, and US to Europe.
2. Sabotage UK’s large offshore wind turbines, taking them out 1 at a time until the UK cries UNCLE.
3. Attack Diego Garcia, a rock in the Indian Ocean that the UK and US use as Navy refueling station.
You forgot the Falklands Islands and St Georgia.

Well, several reasons to take out off-shore wind turbines.
They are high cost, so replacing them will take lots of money. Attacking a low cost, easier to replace on shore facility makes less sense.
Even if they were viable for complete energy source, they are in a vulnerable position. The logic of placing them where drone boats or simple underwater charges can take them out isn’t sound, which may make the GB energy approach to change.
Some deniability. Who actually placed those underwater charges?

I have believed from the time of the Nordstream explosions that the US and/or UK were the culprits. I read now that Mike Shedlock (Mish) has a different view. Talking about lacking in substance. “Shoigu this, Shoigu that” isn’t very substantial. Shoigu was in charge of Ministry of Defense. The specific issue of energy infrastructure defense has been brought up and analyzed in detail, including by sources you linked here.
Those sources discussed lack of laws both authorizing armed militias and protecting installation owners’ initiatives from liability. It is not something MoD can solve, requiring civilian government action, leading to a wider topic where a wider range of individuals are responsible. Yet the blame continues to pile up on the convenient singled out target. Very CIPSO like. You don’t want your arguments to read like CIPSO, if you want to be taken seriously. Another thing, the new Minister of Defense has been around for a few months and he’s “great” already apparently, despite still not solving the issue you focus on here.
Your arguments on this topic not only lack substance, but consistency, which is a shame. No need to be defensive, I’m not attacking you. I’m criticizing your arguments on this topic since they stand out so badly from the rest of your input.

Putin’s zero reaction to the events in the Kursk region proves that there is no reason not to give us permission to strike the Russian Federation with long-range weapons. – Zelensky
Shadowbanned was right.

Zelensky is a politician not a military strategist. He was elected on a platform to negotiate with Putin to end the civil war … certainly not to lead Ukraine into a blitzkrieg attack on Russian territory. His area of expertise is to read lines in front of an audience in a convincing manner. He doesn’t write these line and his director tells him how to emote.
Zelensky is playing his role … likely with a gun to his head. What he wants is for us in the west to nuke Russia for Ukraine and I’ll bet that’s not his idea but the line he was given to read.
“If Russia defeats Ukraine he’s dead and if Ukraine starts losing badly he’s strung up from a lamp post as a scapegoat so to continue his happy life he needs Russia to be nuked pronto so he is seen as a Ukrainian Churchill and they build statues to him all over the West” … this is likely how the director got Zelensky to deliver his lines convincingly.
Maybe they’ll give him an honourary Oscar as well.
Ukrainian oligarchs take us for idiots.

Yeah, that’s got “Great Britain” written all over it.
Add “Ghost of Churchill” to the “Ghost of Kyiv”.
And probably fitting, as this Kursk incursion is going to end up like the Gallipoli landings.

Over the past 24 hours, the AFU losses have amounted to up to 350 troops and 25 units of hardware, including four tanks, one infantry fighting vehicle, two armoured personnel carriers, 18 armoured fighting vehicles, as well as eight motor vehicles, two mortars, and one electronic warfare station.
Since the beginning of hostilities in Kursk region, the AFU losses have amounted to more than 4,130 troops, 58 tanks, 27 infantry fighting vehicles, 50 armoured personnel carriers, 299 armoured fighting vehicles, 131 motor vehicles, 27 artillery guns, five SAM launchers, seven MLRS launchers, including three of HIMARS system and one of MLRS system, six electronic warfare stations, four units of engineering vehicles, including two counterobstacle vehicles and one UR-77 mine clearing vehicle.
The operation to neutralise the AFU units is in progress.

Interesting that casualty numbers are increasing in Kursk.
Early we were on the 280 per day, lately 340 a 20% increase.
And a total number so far of 4.130… If that is KIA then another 4.130 permanently injured and let’s say half of recoverable injured also needing a week or two of hospital stay, 8.230 out of 16.460 …
A grand total of almost 16.500 out of order , half of those permanently.
No unit can operate normally with more than 50% casualties ( some put a limit at 30%)
SO I would say that 30.000-50.000 in the Sumy/Kursk theater seem about right. (including 20.000 needed to hold the lines)
When there are no more significant assaults might be the moment where we can put a top on this number. Right now as you posted “Units of the Sever Group of Forces supported by Army Aviation and artillery thwarted the attempts of the enemy’s assault detachments to launch attacks near Borki, Korenevo, Kremyanoye, and Russkaya Kanapelka.” So we’re not there yet.
My 2 cents
The Russian Foreign Ministry protested to the US Charge d’Affaires in Russia Stephanie Holmes over an illegal entry of American reporters into the Kursk Region, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
“The US Charge d’Affaires to Russia Holmes was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry on August 20 and was issued a strong protest in connection with the provocative actions of American reporters, who illegally entered the Kursk Region for propaganda coverage of the Kiev regime’s crimes, as well as the emerging evidence of the participation of an American PMC on the side of Ukrainian forces during their invasion of the territory of the Russian Federation,” the ministry said on Telegram.
“It was underscored that such actions, which run counter to the assertions of [US President] Joe Biden’s administration that it allegedly has nothing to do with the attack on Russia by Ukrainian neo-Nazis, clearly prove the involvement of the US, as a direct participant in the conflict, in [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky’s malicious conspiracies,” the ministry said.
According to the ministry, Russian agencies will conduct investigative activities to bring to justice the American journalists that entered the Kursk region.
“It was stressed that with regard to the American nationals involved in these crimes, in accordance with the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, the competent agencies will carry out the necessary investigative activities to bring them to justice. In addition, it was made clear that all foreign ‘specialists’ and mercenaries that illegally cross the border of our country automatically become a legitimate military target for the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation,” the ministry stated.
P.S. On another front (diplomatic)

Zelensky… was elected on a platform to negotiate with Putin to end the civil war
I’m not sure about the clause “to negotiate with Putin” here, as while that might have been in the background, the Donetsk and Lugansk regions themselves were the principals vis-a-vis Kievland, not Putin IMO.

While everyone is discussing Zelensky’s Kursk adventure, we are losing one line of defense after another, and we may also lose a strategic city.
The situation for the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Donbas is catastrophic – BILD analyst
On Sunday, the Donetsk Regional Military Administration announced the forced evacuation of families with children from the city of Pokrovsk. Once 80,000 people lived there. Now there are 53,000 residents in the Pokrovsky district, of which almost 4,000 are children. Russian troops have approached the district center to within 7-8 km. At the beginning of the year, it was 38 km. The Russian bridgehead is expanding almost daily.
“The Ukrainian authorities have ordered the evacuation of the city of Pokrovsk with 65,000 residents within two weeks. From Toretsk, which is 50 km to the northeast, 29,000 of the 32,000 former residents have fled. “Although I may be making myself unpopular again, the situation in Donbas is catastrophic. In this situation, I still consider it extremely risky to send 5,000 of the best soldiers to a neighboring country instead of conducting a counteroffensive there,” writes BILD open data expert Julian Röpke.

I’m not bothered how my arguments sound relative to bogus contributions because otherwise a whole range of criticism would be out of bounds due to superficial correspondences. There is nothing for it except to make whatever points occur to me and argue from there.
Shoigu was minister of defence, the interface between defence specialists and the legislature. I defer to whatever objective evidence might subsequently appear but I’ve followed this issue of energy infrastructure attacks as well as common sources allow and the picture is one of inaction and paralysis.
I’ve seen no indication of a credible effort to translate long running warnings of infrastructure vulnerability into relevant legal norms and defensive arrangements but plenty of complaints to the contrary. The MoD did manage to get a bill into parliament to ban civilian gadgets on the battlefield, the use of which is in necessary compensation for the lack of MoD approved alternatives; this cause enough of a stir that the adults had to intervene.
You should pick a better subject than attempting to defend Shoigu on the matter of energy infrastructure attacks. Polite silence or mention of generally improving circumstances as the MoD would be on solid enough ground.

Iodine pills near top. As Nobel winner (phycisist) Feynmann used to say, “You are not even wrong.”
The Iodine pills are NOT a cure. It is merely amelioration. Akin to carbon monoxide and cyanide having a stronger affinity for the hemoblobin in your rbc’s (red blood cells) and can suffocate you at the near terminus of your oxygen delivery system, so can Strontium ) very easily bind in your thyroid gland. Sr is just below Iodine in the Periodic Chart – a chemical kissing cousin. Not a big deal with the normal trace amounts, but among the fissile daughters of Uranium is Sr90, a very potent shorter lived radioactive that packs an inordiantly strong wallop due to binding onto the thyroid.
The excess of Iodine in your system lessens – ameliorates the probablility of thyroid cancer down the road. It is helpful for adults, but has probably an order of magnitude more beneficisa for the youth. The statistically noticeable spike in thyroid cancer over the last decade in parts of Japan is an indicator of the Sr 90 from the Fukishima event.
If there was somebody else (I miss the 5 min subtitled vids or Yuri) I would not go to MilSumm on Rumble. (I keep going Logistics, logistics on the Kursk events) So, well try DPAsia. And he talked about not the “flower” but the Rhinoceros (head) of one RF ongoing attack. Hey, maybe the head of a steganasorous. The paredolia is fading, but was still fun to hear.
Well, off to give blood (RBC’s). 2 blood services start to call me 7 weeks after donating.

That CTO/invasion report had two listings for causalities, one for a set of specific areas, and the other for the small groups running around. It was 410, the first entry actually says killed and wounded don’t think I’ve seen any of the reports state it that way.
“The AFU losses amounted to more than 60 troops killed and wounded, two tanks, eight armoured fighting vehicles, and six motor vehicles. ”

Re: Ukrainian constitution and church-banning.
Sadly, these extremist ideologies always tend to lean on the “protecting public order”, and “morality” angle to justify most of their various atrocities and crimes against human dignity.
I expect much of the same in this case, which will only further guarantee their own eventual destruction.

Marduk @283: ”I personally have no diving experience (or knowledge) so would welcome comment on Mish’s analysis [NS sailboat narrative] from those who do.”
Ludicrous nonsense.
First: depth is too great for diving with regular air. Heliox, or at least nitrox needed, and those cannot be supplied by a compressor on the boat. All of the gasses needed would have to be transported from land. The sailboat would be packed with gas cylinders.
Second: the charges used in the demolition were large, as in tons of explosives. Where would these be stored in an already packed sailboat?
Third: setting the explosives would take many hours, if not a couple days, for a pair of divers. They would need a reliable platform to work from with good station-keeping abilities. A sailboat is the exact opposite of that, with keel and rigging that put it at the mercy of currents and winds. Even drifting a few dozen meters complicates divers’ work significantly.
Forget the sailboat nonsense. It is beyond laughable.

“Swear words” add flavor to a statement. They can be overdone…particularly ghost peppers or even cayenne. Do you happen to be a religionist with a “proper” upbringing? Is your background upper middle class or wanna be that? OTOH: Highly spicy outbursts are ubiquitous in bar-rooms. MoA does happen to be a hangout for “bar-flies”. On several occasions I have postulated a NON-NUCLEAR response which the R.U. could readily carry out. It’s reverberations would be earth-shaking. Financier control mechanisms would implode. Governments would flail in uncertainty. It would be a body-blow to the Collective Wa$te.
What is that proposition? Strictly kinetic (non-nuclear) hypersonic missile strikes on a certain private bank in City of London and perhaps a second one on the N.Y. $tock Exchange…That scenario would strike at the heart of the Bea$t without significant “collateral damage”; while clearly demonstrating to the world that there is a new Big Dog/Mama Bear in the room.

213 if Ukraine “got hold of”500 planes…few places to keep such safe from Russia…..and apart from huge numbers of maintenance …refuelling staff and fuel depots and staff …supply of spare parts etc…amongst at the moment of 10 pilots that can probably fly them but not be at their best militarily….would need staffing supplies the lot directly from Nato and such a mass onslaught would be treated as an existential threat by Russia.

💥🇺🇦🏴‍☠️ Tornado hit AFU convoy
The footage shows the AFU hardware convoy destroyed in the border area of Kursk region.
The reconnaissance UAV operator located the enemy’s convoy in a forest belt. After following the convoy to a stopping place and confirming the presence of the enemy’s manpower cluster in this area, the coordinates were transferred to the Tornado-S MLRS crew, which delivered the strike.
As a result, the AFU losses amounted to three units of hardware and up to 20 troops.
