Old blue teamer friends bittersweet reuninon
Spent the weekend with a bunch of old friends, some of their kids and grandkids, reminded me of how much I valued their friendship, gave me hope that some of their offspring might figure out a good path forward in their young lives. However…
I felt like the rural setting was straight out of Orwell’s “Animal Farm”. Current events were mostly avoided in favor of music making, games, food and catching up. My “Palestine” hat got zero comments. Trump derangement was present and popped up occasionally then submerged. One German couple had just returned from Europe. I asked her how her parents were. “Great!” Her dad still lives in East Germany. “Doing well.” Her husband said they had a wonderful time in Europe. All good.
Another lives in LA, now owns 2 houses, a condo, a boat and a bar. 2 kids in college. I asked him if LA was as bad as I read about and he said “No.” Homelessness is a thing but “there’s a lot of money in LA.” Way more than Chicago. end of conversation.
Bottom line, there is no Left left in the US. Children of boomers who dabbled in anti war, counterculture, central American solidarity are now spoiled rich kids, surrounded by blue team culture norms, unprepared for what’s coming.
bittersweet for me.
