China Brokers Unity In Palestine

This is an interesting development:

Palestinian factions agree to end division in pact brokered by ChinaSCMP

Rival Palestinian factions including Fatah and Hamas have signed an agreement aimed at ending their division and building unity following talks in Beijing, marking a diplomatic win for China.

Over the years Fatah and Hamas had already signed several agreements to build some unity government. All however have failed.

What gives hope is that this agreement might be sustained is the participation of all other Palestinian groups as well as the significance of China as the guarantee power behind this:

Senior representatives of 14 Palestinian factions reached the agreement – called the Beijing Declaration – after reconciliation talks that began on Sunday.

The pact aims to unite Palestinians in their conflict with Israel, which launched a war on militant group Hamas in Gaza in October.

The Chinese foreign ministry said the agreement was a first step to promote a “comprehensive, durable and sustainable ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip that would eventually lead to Palestine being admitted to the United Nations as a fully fledged member and becoming an independent state.

“The declaration reaffirms [the] commitment to establishing an independent state of Palestine with Jerusalem as the capital city based on relevant UN resolutions and ensuring the integrity of Palestinian territory including the West Bank, Jerusalem and Gaza,” ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said.

This implies that Hamas, as well as all other groups, have agreed to a two-state solution – the aim the United Nations has agreed upon. (Just last week the current Israeli parliament rejected such a solution.)

Also important is the envisioning of a unity government for Gaza:

Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday said the signing of the agreement was “an important, historic moment in the Palestinian cause”.

He said that under the deal the rival groups had agreed to set up an “interim national reconciliation government” to govern post-war Gaza.

The west will of course at first reject the whole process and result because it had no part in creating it.

But last year's agreement between Saudi Arabia and Iran, also brokered by China, has held far beyond the low expectations put into it.

The Palestinian agreement may, via the UN, give a new impetus towards a ceasefire and a new situation in Gaza that is mostly free of Israeli interference.

I trust that China can sustain the global soft-power necessary to lead this development towards success.

thanks b, but what if anything has china got from israel? if israel is determined to exterminate all of those still living in it’s open air prison – gaza and etc. etc. – what is china willing to do about it? so long as the usa maintains its ”unconditional” support for israel – nothing is going to change here.. well, maybe something will change, but i can’t see it with this.. maybe its a baby step but usa-israel will be looking to kill the baby..

While China has hosted multiple Palestine representatives in a bid to establish a framework for a workable national unity government, the U.S., Israel, and UAE have been in discussions on their own framework for post-war order in Gaza, which relies on a “reformed“ Palestinian authority ruling in Gaza, backed by the militaries of the Gulf states coordinated with Israel.
Based on statements from US officials, the violence in the occupied territories will proceed until the international community signs on to whatever “day after” plan is concocted by a US-Israel-Gulf States triumvirate. Any plan sponsored or brokered by China will be rejected automatically by this group. Apparently, much of the “normalization” process between Saudi Arabia and Israel, brokered by US, requires specific rejection by SA of any and all Chinese initiatives for economic development and regional harmony.

Israel’s position on borders was determined by UNSC 242 on November 22, 1967. Israel supported the resolution because it called on the Arab states to accept Israel’s right “to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force.” Israel’s recognized boundaries are the ‘Mandatory Palestine’ borders from the past. Palestine was not mentioned in 242.
On March 25, 2019, the United States officially recognized the Golan Heights (in Syria) as being under the sovereignty of Israel.
UNSC 242 on November 22, 1967 here . .”Emphasizing the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war and the need for a lasting peace in which every State in the area can live in security.”

While the agreement is a positive development, its implementation and effects are uncertain at this point.
Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a major resistance force along with Hamas, has rejected any mention of international resolutions and legitimation of Israel, hence the two-state formula. It has requested that the PA retract its recognition of Israel.
Also, after a similar, but less successful meeting in Moscow, Fatah continued its hostility towards Hamas, and the PA did not, and has not in any way abandoned its Israel/US linked actions and schemes.
It remains to be seen what has changed, and will change after the Beijing meeting.

As you say, this is further along in the line of “last year’s agreement between Saudi Arabia and Iran, also brokered by China.” Although that was shortly before the October 7th event, there is a basic switch in the Middle East, leaving the Israeli/American model, which was defined by the Sunni/Shi’a conflict, which only aided Israel, back towards seeing the common interests of ME countries as opposed to the Israeli threat. This is a Middle East-wide tendency, only brokered by China, which is only serving the good offices of a mediator. In the end October 7th completely overturned the previous disposition. Israel is now the threat, the principal threat, and everyone has to get together to face it. Current Israeli moves have only confirmed it.

This is an indictment of the many “rulers” on the Arabian Peninsula. That China can reach from such a great distance, and with such an aversion to Islam, and broker this agreement really tells us all that we need to know about the various “leaders” of the Arab League.
The irony is that the leaders in the Arab world aren’t even Arab. It’s the Persians in Iran.

yeah. so I am afraid a bit.
I am glad to the Chinese Government for its decision though.
But at the same time, I feel that China has finally stepped into ‘dangerous territory’.
In a old book I read about the neo-cons ago, it was explained that during the time of Bush’s father, were discussing the overthrow of the Syrian government, and that one of the reasons the Syrian government had to be destroyed was because it was an obstacle to Israel.
It seems “obstacle to Israel” is enough reason for them to plotting destroy foreign country.
And there is constant warfare in Syria, the US is strongly affected.
The neocons and Zionists, as far as I understand, are a species that can use the outbreak of regional conflict as a ‘way’ without any hesitation.
China appears to be gradually coming forward as a priority target to ‘a species that has no hesitation in creating war in the region to realise its ambitions’.
This will increase the pressure on China to use all of its influence to generate war in the region around it, such as in the Taiwan contingency and the clashes in the waters around the Philippines.
The communists have no god to pray to, but I hope some blessing comes to China anyway.

Post-war time and how many will remain alive is something only Bibiden decides. Again China does nothing useful in politics, useless like their Ukr plan. This is no different than nato telling Ukr they will be in nato “for sure”, but first they have to kill all Russians. In this case, everyone must agree to surrender at the same time, then “it’ll be fine, you’ll see”.

China could place sanctions upon Israel, which it is legally allowed to do given the multiple ICC, ICJ and UN rulings and Israel’s multi-decade refusal to comply with UN votes. This would send a very large message, how could any Muslim country then trade with Israel? Imagine if Russia followed suit?

My (hazy) recollection is that in approximately 2006 an election was conducted in Gaza and the Gazans elected Hamas as the legitimate government of Gaza.
Jewrael almost immediately arrested some, if not all, of the members of the new Gaza government, threw them in the slammer in Jewrael, and declared Hamas a ter’rist organisation.
Part of my hazy recollection is that the Hamas reps were supposed to represent Gaza in the Knesset.
Anyway, it’s going to be ‘interesting’ to see who meets and greets Bibi in Washington now that Biden has been sidelined. And even more ‘interesting’ to hear what Bibi says to the Jew$lave$ in the thoroughly jewed-up Congress.
And, regardless of how his Washington trip pans out, he’ll be stumbling into a very very angry hostage shit storm when he gets back to Jewrael.

The plan was for forces led by Dahlan, and armed with new weapons supplied at America’s behest, to give Fatah the muscle it needed to remove the democratically elected Hamas-led government from power. (The State Department declined to comment.)
But the secret plan backfired, resulting in a further setback for American foreign policy under Bush. Instead of driving its enemies out of power, the U.S.-backed Fatah fighters inadvertently provoked Hamas to seize total control of Gaza.

Within the Bush administration, the Palestinian policy set off a furious debate. One of its critics is David Wurmser, the avowed neoconservative, who resigned as Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief Middle East adviser in July 2007, a month after the Gaza coup.
Wurmser accuses the Bush administration of “engaging in a dirty war in an effort to provide a corrupt dictatorship [led by Abbas] with victory.” He believes that Hamas had no intention of taking Gaza until Fatah forced its hand. “It looks to me that what happened wasn’t so much a coup by Hamas but an attempted coup by Fatah that was pre-empted before it could happen,” Wurmser says.

I’ll remind barflies that Russia obtained a similar agreement about six weeks ago that was oral instead of written which was prominently mentioned by Lavrov during his remarks about the Palestinian Crisis at the UNSC last week. Plus, I’ll note the intensity of Russian Minister Bogdanov’s interactions with all regional players over the last week, including the weekend. However, as I wrote at the end of “Lavrov’s Geopolitical Review for the Heads of Russian Non-Profits & NGOs”:
“I agree with his formulation that the UN isn’t working as designed because too many nations are violating the UN Charter instead of working together to uphold and enforce International Law. In other words, there’re more UN Charter violators than the USA, all of them being outlaws, while some also remain empires controlling other peoples in colonial fashion. And regarding the UN, its undergoing a rather longstanding problem that’s now a very serious crisis—the inability to enforce UNSC Resolutions on Palestine primarily because of two impediments: the Outlaw US Empire and its Zionist allies. The greater mass of the Global Majority agrees on what the solution ought to be but have so far failed to force its implementation. I know Lavrov didn’t mention this crisis, but the other two superpowers need to face the reality of their responsibilities and force the issue; otherwise, global security will forever remain a pipe dream.” [Emphasis original]
I didn’t emphasize my final sentence, although it merits that treatment. IMO, the above argument is rock solid as is its conclusion. Force will need to be applied to obtain peace as the Zionists and their one ally only obey that formula. Crooke asks again and again for the world to look reality in the eye and not try to substitute wishful thinking in its place. Lavrov’s UNSC presentation was very powerful but lacked noting the need for physical enforcement of UNSC and UNGA Resolutions as the only genuine means to make those Resolutions reality. The reality is the Arc of Resistance lacks the military power to affect that reality, although it can and will cause the Zionists great pain, but that pain alone isn’t sufficient.

Does not define any borders between the 2 states, because the language in 242 is clear that the parties return to the internationally recognized boundries which are the UNR 181 borders. The 181 borders are also the only borders that Israel has formally accepted. Everything else is a ceasefire line.

Huge amount to unpack in this paragraph. But firstly, this means the very generous standing Palestinian offer of a lasting peace based on the pre-1967 boundries is off the table. They are demanding the 1947 borders as per UNR 181. Secondly – mentioning UNR 194 and UNSC 2334 means reparations are front and center.
It’s a reasonable guess that these rather forcefull demands are a result of 1) defeating the IDF and 2) the ICJ Advisory Opinion from last Friday.

Maybe the Chinese see that the genocide in Gaza could lead to a much greater regional conflict, which will affect many countries interests including those of China, and that they are hoping a united front will be strong enough to force a peace deal, though I doubt the Zionists want one, they want to complete their genocide.

I’m happy to say I didn’t, malenkov; in fact I did think you meant simply ‘the last verses of Genesis.’ Well, in my bible there is a heading on the penultimate page of the last verses of Genesis; it says ‘The Death of Israel’. And of course, that is a reminder that the father of Joseph, Jacob, has the name ‘Israel’ given to him and he is buried in Egypt. So, if we are taking the Bible literally, (which we are not), Israel dies and is buried in Egypt.
I would rather think about the next, the final page of Genesis. The heading there is ‘The Death of Joseph’. Genesis ends with the death of Joseph. His story crowns the saga that is Creation in its entirety. That is ‘the Aftermath’.

Israel must be militarily defeated and the settlers expelled.

It would be in both China’s and Russia’s interests to help the Hezbollah Syria and the Houthi defend their airspace from Israeli’s American-made aircraft, drones and missiles.

The Lancet magazine recently wrote (in the beginning of July or so) that 180k people have been killed by Israel in Gaza since the October 7th 2023. This is nearing 10% of population, which is a hardcoded line for genocide. There is no more excuses or anything to claim it is not genocide.

JB, you are absolutely correct: It is not reasonable, fair, or just. But colonialism is not about any of those things. Colonialism is about exercising raw power against weaker groups of people.
In 1949 the country of Palestine was inhabited by mostly Arab Palestinians. After WW2 a new international organization called the United Nations was created to replace the League of Nations. At that time (1949) the UN had only 49 members, mostly western countries.
Led by the British, the USA, and the Soviet Union, a vote was taken to split Palestine into two states so that the Jewish victims of the Holocaust (there were many more non Jewish victims) could have a place to live as Europeans were so anti-Semitic that Jews were not welcome in European countries. Anyway, that was the logic.
But neither the British, nor the US, or the Soviet Union at that time, ever considered asking the Arab Palestinian people, who have lived in Palestine for hundreds of years before 1949, if they were in agreement with allowing European Jews to take control of more than half of Palestine in order to relive Europe of it “Jewish” problem. The two-state solution was a typical colonial European solution. The vote by 49 countries (I don’t think the vote was unanimous if someone knows pleas respond) was racist and a violation of the spirit of the UN founding documents and ideas: The recent ICJ rulings make that quite clear.

I highly suggest reading the original Mandate for Palestine of 1922 where the following two aspects are delineated:

Note, Palestine was to be a country, not two states within one area, that would provide a home for Jewish people within that one nation where all inhabitants are to be treated equally. That was the original intent of the Mandate. Even the Balfour Declaration expressed the rights of those already there were to be respected:
“… it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country.”
What altered that equation was Zionist Terrorism pure and simple, yet swept under the rug since 1948, although it’s quite clearly alive and well today and attempting to attain the goal of its founders–the complete elimination of all non-Jews from Palestine.

To be fair, you’re correct that the indigenous Palestinians were never asked, not in 1922 or afterward. The British, French and then the Americans viewed control of the levant necessary for geopolitical reasons that originated before the Napoleonic Wars when the British and French were geopolitical rivals. On one thing they agreed–the Ottoman Empire needed to be defeated and Islam forced to leave Europe and the Levant despite the latter being Islam’s homeland.
The current reality is extremely ugly. Palestinian leadership continues to say they are willing to live alongside anyone as long as they’re peaceful and law-abiding people of good will–even Zionists after the decades of injustices. The Zionists on the other hand want to kill all the Palestinians and want to cohabitate with only fellow Zionists. Given that most Zionists are former Europeans, they have little claim to legitimacy in Palestine versus that of those that have lived there for centuries, Jews included. That Jews are capable of living elsewhere in peace with their fellows is proven by Iran/Persia, which means Zionists are an aberration much like Islamic State–Fanatical Anti-Human Zealots: Misfits to the nth degree.
What’s the Just Solution? Clearly, a Zionist state is Unjust and thus ruled out. A Palestine modeled on the original mandate being home to all willing to live in peace would be Just. The UN Two-State Solution would only be Just with Right of Return and payment of massive reparations, but the Zionists have refused to comply with that Law. So, we’re left with only one solution–the Original Mandate Palestine–but to attain that outcome, force will be required to remove illegal Zionist squatters/occupiers, but remove them to where?

Some thoughts. Early in the 1900’s it was Oxford University Press that printed the Scofield bible and sent it back into America.
In much of what I have read – per the last hundred years or so of Anglo history, quite often it seems to me that men/people with genuinely good intentions are placed out in front to pave the way – to lay the foundations, for those with not so good intentions.
