Notice Of Absence – Update

Please check here for previous notes of absence and updates.

In the end it has turned out to be a one-and-done procedure and I am happy to say that it is now done with:

  • The good news: I am likely to recover in full with better health than I have previously had.
  • The not-so-good news: It will take much longer to recuperate from this than I had expected.

The procedure I went through was a quite extended variant of what WebMD calls a Aortobifemoral Bypass.

When my chest was opened up the conditions found in place were worse (…"they always are"…1) than expected. They required bypass procedures more extensive (in size), but less delicate (in number of new shunt connections), than anticipated.

Everything went more or less smooth and, after some seven hours of diligent work, the professors and MDs were satisfied (…"they always are"…) with the job they had done on me.

The physically drain the (larger than expected) procedure took on me has been much stronger (… "it always is" …) than I had anticipated. The intellectual drain, in consequence of the physical one, was even worse. My current task is to rebuild both strengths. This will take months.

Local health insurance entitles, and recommends, to take an additional three weeks leave of convalescence which is essentially a long and lazy stay in a specialized hotel/clinic with individualized physical training in the morning and lots of off-time during the rest of the day to hang out or go for walks. I am getting urged to commit to this even as it can only begin in July which, in my case, will be later than ideal. I currently think of it as a 'back to work training' opportunity which will allow me to slowly slip back into blogging while coping with some limited infrastructure and means.

Some readers have emailed and asked if I need additional money. Thank you very much. I won't reject any donations but I am not in any immediate need of help.

I have always taken care to keep my health insurance pay current and I had, during better days, put aside some 'rainy days' funds.  The only additional payments I have made so far were for a number of taxi rides, a (partial) single room fee and for full hospital access to the net.

Those were minor expenses. The health insurance will pay for everything else without asking for any claw backs or extras.

I will be back to ask for blog donations after I am able to deliver an adequate compensation.

This whole episode has turned out to be larger and to take way longer than I had anticipated. Please excuse my lack of foresight on it.

Welcome back! I’m happy to see that you survived.
I consider that would be better to lose your blog because you’re too busy taking care of your health than losing the blog because you’re dead.
You’re through recovering from a serious conditions. Take care of yourself!
Your blog is important but not enough to have you dead.
I wrote to the Saker : “Rest, heal, love and be loved” for his health issues. They’re true in your case too.
Rest, Heal, Love and accept being loved!

I’m glad that you came through this O.K. Having been involved in similar procedures, I can attest that it is one of the most extensive surgeries that a human can withstand. All best wishes for your rapid convalescence. Bill

I am delighted to learn that your procedure has gone well and you are on the road to recovery. I didn’t realize how much I would miss your posts until you were forced to sign off.
You are a brilliant analyst and writer, and your reporting is exceptional. So many times you have found and published the truth on critical matters that no one else has managed to see or report on. Your concise and accurate summaries have been the first thing I look for on the net, and I look forward to seeing them again when you have fully recovered.
Best wishes,

How wonderful your recovering, b! Like everybody else I worried about you. Amazing really since I, we, don’t even know you. Good news, ‘b’ ! Wish a smooth recovery. Was is a procedure which started as transluminal and had to be converted to “open” bypass? I am curious, because I have done this stuff; it reminds me of the procedure by karlof1 – he had it done last year I believe and he is doing fine.
Anyway, ALLES GUTE und ‘bleiben Sie dran’!

Posted by: Norwegian | Jun 12 2024 14:50 utc | 150

Was is a procedure which started as transluminal and had to be converted to “open” bypass?
No. It had to be a double Y bypass as was known early on. Things got a bit bigger when they looked for a proper place to attach it and found none usable on the old aorta nearby – at least that’s what I have been told when it was over.
Anyway – routine for them – they got it done.

Posted by: b | Jun 12 2024 14:54 utc | 151

What a pleasure to scroll through all these great comments wishing b well. I’ll add my wishes and say we share differing heart issues. Here we have a program called Cardio-Rehab that I’ve been through three times and highly suggest if something similar is offered to you. Lots of concern for your wellbeing was shared at my substack. As for returning to writing, you’ll want to establish some balance between your exercising and the efforts that go into writing as it’s very easy for time to slip by and cause the omission of rehab exercises.
Best wishes for your recovery regime!!!!

Glad all is well, best wishes from here on. Glad MoA is back the lull made me realize this is the only place I actually find anything insightful, even if speculative or paranoid, everything else out there is to some degree circumspect or tentative, I attribute it to how old school internet and open this forum is.

Bernhard-
Glad to hear that your procedures went well and that your course of rehabilitation is planned. Once again, Divine Providence timed things beautifully as your absence coincided with Western escalation toward an impending full conflagration that many barflies have forecast yet none could prevent, giving us a pause during which we could reflect and perhaps pray.
Best for your full and speedy recovery.

Posted by: Bill R | Jun 12 2024 15:08 utc | 161

Been stopping by daily to learn how you were doing, b. I am relieved to read you are now in recovery mode following a rather substantial surgery. Taking it one day at a time sounds rather wise to me. The news isn’t going anywhere and neither are your barflies. We’re right there, in spirit, with you. Looking forward to updates on your continued progress…

Posted by: h | Jun 12 2024 15:12 utc | 162

B,
I’m glad your procedure succeeded.
Your link on aortobifemoral bypasses says that clots are a risk after the procedure. So I think it’s very likely that they put you on a blood-thinner like Eliquis (apixaban) or Xarelto {rivaroxaban}. If they have, be very aware of the risk of internal bleeding. I was put on both the two blood-thinners I named, but had to be taken off first one and then the other because of internal bleeding. Instead, a left atrial appendage was inserted in my heart, and while the wound healed I took clopidogrel {Plavix) as a less dangerous blood-thinner.

I too had an event similar to yours, sternum opened, heart removed.
Coronary arteries replaced with mammary and saphenous arteries.
Now I’m fine and the doctors told me they gave me 20 years more. (Surgery performed at 75 years old.)
Now that I know that you are well and improving, I can jokingly tell you:
“welcome to the Riga Club”.
