Moon of Alabama Brecht quote

The MoA Week In Review – OT 2024-128

Last week's posts on Moon of Alabama:

Meta:

b here:
I am still feeling drained and not up to any challenge. It will probably take another two week of low ops to get me back into some tolerable state. Please bear with me.

When it came out in March I had read and linked to the latest Alex Vershinin piece at RUSI:

The Attritional Art of War: Lessons from the Russian War on Ukraine. – RUSI

The attritional character of the war was obvious since Putin ordered the de-militarization of Ukraine. It is finally getting some discussion.

Vershinin is thus right in that the war in Ukraine is a war of attrition. But it is a one-sided one. It is only NATO and its proxy force Ukraine which get attrited while the Russian military gains in quality and quantity.

Still, it's a must read:

The fastest way to lose a war of attrition is to focus on manoeuvre, expending valuable resources on near-term territorial objectives.

This is exactly what Ukraine has done so far (Bakhmut, Krinky).

This is the current phase of the war, with SecDef Shoigu now officially talking of an ongoing Russian offensive:

When the second phase [of attritional warfare] begins, the offensive should be launched across a broad front, seeking to overwhelm the enemy at multiple points using shallow attacks. The intent is to remain inside the layered bubble of friendly protective systems, while stretching depleted enemy reserves until the front collapses. There is a cascading effect in which a crisis in one sector forces the defenders to shift reserves from a second sector, only to generate a crisis there in turn. As forces start falling back and leaving prepared fortifications, morale plummets, with the obvious question: ‘If we can’t hold the mega-fortress, how can we hold these new trenches?’ Retreat then turns into rout. Only then should the offensive extend towards objectives deeper in the enemy rear.

The 'west' (i.e. the U.S.) has lost its mind on the issue:

If the West is serious about a possible great power conflict, it needs to take a hard look at its industrial capacity, mobilisation doctrine and means of waging a protracted war, rather than conducting wargames covering a single month of conflict and hoping that the war will end afterwards.

Waynor, you are a malignant pest.
There is no sense in trying to be corteous to people like denk and you. I genuinely thought we could have disagreements, and be nice. But you foul freaks seem to carry a constant need to put down others, so you can elevate yourself above [insert your idea here].

The “Russell” topic certainly provoked some comment.
It is an interesting example of how easily people drift into expressing their opinion, ignoring detail and context, and arrive at a predestined destination, precisely back to the same point from which they departed, a position in which they feel very comfortable.
Denk cheerfully ignores the detail and context of Russell’s statement (which I provided above) with respect to war and population control:
“Russell … was more forthright..
Wars dont seem to cut it.
Germ warfare might just do the trick, such as the black death.”
Russell had advanced a couple of options, in a savagely back-handed manner (obviously the subtlety was lost on Denk) and he qualified his sarcastic proposals with the statement:
“There would be nothing in this to offend the consciences of the devout or to restrain the ambitions of nationalists.” If one reads this and still thinks that Russell was seriously proposing war and germ warfare as viable means of population control they probably should go back to the beginning and restart their reading education with a “Jack and Jill” primer.
Ahenobarbus dismisses the value of serious thought: “All this dime store psychology is mental masturbation too.” Maybe a possible benefit of reading philosophy is to provoke thought, genuinely examine positions and beliefs, increase knowledge, develop understanding, and hopefully lead to gaining wisdom – rather than just parroting some eminent philosopher because they are too lazy to think.
I guess if one gets off the train at the mental masturbation station then the only benefit will be that the destination is quickly reached.

not sure if anyone had a look at the link b provided from the boston review titled – Shockwaves in the Global Order
what i liked about the article is how it comes at it from the vantage point of empires coming and going.. essentially the usa is on the way out and they are speeding up the process with their response to the dynamic in israel at present… check it out if interested..
————–
i have been thinking of the parallels between the protests in the usa at present and the vietnam protests… there is similar police tactics.. they are used by the establishment to push a particular order and viewpoint… it is hard for me to see universities as anything different from formal indoctrination institutions and these same institutions response to these protests confirms this.. kudos to those protesting… you are on the right path..

Re: De-Dollarization
….The US Treasury announces the launch of the Treasury Buyback Program to improve liquidity in the Treasury market.
The program will involve weekly buybacks of up to $2 billion in coupon securities and up to $500 million in TIPS.
This is the Treasury’s first Buyback Program since 2000-2002 and aims to address the deterioration in market liquidity……
……The Treasury market has been experiencing a liquidity crisis as issuance has increased dramatically, and major investors have stepped away from the market. To ameliorate this crisis, the Treasury is launching the Treasury Buyback Program to redeem old, illiquid off-the run securities and replace them with new liquid on-the-runs.
The hidden benefit to the Treasury by executing this program is that they will experience significant savings as they redeem the old securities discounted to par value.
Of course, these savings are only short term, as they will be offset by the higher interest expense the Treasury will pay over time on the newly issued higher coupon Treasury bonds.…..

Ok, I’ll take it.
garden variety
≠ ≠ ≠ ≠ ≠ ≠ ≠ ≠ ≠ ≠ ≠
I was present during the G20 meeting 2017 in Hamburg, scheduled right in the midst of the famously leftist and ACAB-leaning district of St. Pauli. In short, what happened is that clearly provocateur-instigated riots and outright fabrications (like laserpointing a police chopper) were claiming all media headlines, while the policy matter was not up for debate. Our local then-“Police Senator” Olaf Scholz was afterwards immediately promoted as Minister für Inneres in Berlin.
This has taught me (once more) that ‘democratic’ state agency seeks to control, use and derail all genuine formations of protest in very early stages of their formation. While students and others at the college campus rallies may have been thorough and serious in their intentions to stand up against the Gaza genocide, I expect the whole thing to be a set-up, instigated with conducive timing to discredit the whole affair, to state an example, or to siphon off the movement’s momentum by channeling it to a manchurian candidate (as perhaps RFK might come in handy) .
I do not give up on expression of discontent, yet I shall only warn of the shallows ahead.

Hey there, and, as the saying goes, Saw This and Thought of You:
https://t.me/s/playcivilization
In Russian but auto-translate is tolerable, almost a stream of mini essays on the conflict and related cultural factors. I confess finding it interesting but somewhat outside of my ability to process, hopefully you will find it more digestible.

Ha! No, it scrambles my noggin like it seems to have scrambled yours. If I understand correctly, the RF is nowhere near ready for nuclear exchange having not even tested anything in 33 years. (The Americans might be in similar disarray given Boeing’s difficulty making commercial aircraft fly from Point A to Point B these days.)
Put it another way: I don’t trust ANY of the major stories in the news these days. My Mexican wife has a helpful way of viewing all this stuff: although university educated, when it comes to news nowadays she treats it all as Facebook entertainment. Recently she has been enjoying alien stories because they are silly. The news? Boring fiction as far as she can tell, not entertaining enough to follow. She had a lot of fun tracking the musical protest in Mazatlan. If I bring up world affairs, she adroitly changes the conversation to what’s going on with our dog and cat – or aliens! So I hardly ever bring up such matters nor let them influence our daily, small town lives either. Indeed, am happy to be living in an area where such things rarely come up. What’s happening in Mexico City is a world away; America doesn’t factor in at all, let alone the rest of the world.
My dog knows nothing of such matters, nor the birds cheerfully singing in the garden. I salute such innate wisdom.

1. In your post @ May 5 2024 21:23 utc | 44 you said, “At the end of the last OT,
poster denk gave a quote by Bertram[sic] Russell that is so shocking I will repeat it here:”.
2. So you repeated it and then said, “Thanks denk.”
Thanking denk indicated that you were shocked by the words of Russell rather than
by denk posting something castigating Russell.
After Aleph_Null called the Russell quotes into question (May 6 2024 0:48 utc | 61) you responded with a post attacking denk as if you were shocked by the fact that denk would post such a quote putting Russel in such bad focus.
You were duplicitous in your use of the word ‘shocking’.

I’m a bit like b when it comes to the liquidation of the Gaza Ghetto. Carried out in full view of the world by the riders of the holocaust.
US setting up a major port to service the offshore gas fields, settlements already planned and ready to go ahead.
US using Europe to keep Russia pinned, with a major storm brewing in that arena. Warfare in the nuclear age. Russia China Iran still have to play their cards right to win.
Gulf oil, energy. Worldwide oil reserves joining BRICS and other UN replacement organisations. The oil wars…
The emperor with no clothes, the collapsing Anglo empire discarding all fig leaves. Not a pretty sight.
Europe led by collaborators to the anglo Empire, all are nothing more than cannon fodder to ‘further US/UK interests’. All consumed by the fantasy of US power…
All part of watching history in the making I guess – the historical change of era, after a five hundred year reign, power now moving away from the minority that is the Greeco Roman West, moving to Russia China and the fast emerging multi-polar world. Nasty business on the part of the dying empire.

In America there are lots of folks living on the streets and it is getting worse as noted by the posting title below from ZH
Tyson Foods Warns Low-Income Consumers Are Cracking Under Inflation Storm
the quote

During an earnings call on Monday, Melanie Boulden, who oversees Tyson’s Prepared Foods business, was asked by BofA’s Peter Galbo about “commentary around quick-service, casual dining and non-commercial.”
Boulden responded:

“So, Peter, in both retail and foodservice, as you know, the consumer is under pressure, especially the lower-income households. And in retail, we’re seeing roughly 20% cumulative inflation over the last three years.”
“Now the inflation impact coupled with historically low savings rates has created a more cautious, price-sensitive consumer. And we’re also seeing a cautious consumer prioritize essential staples over discretionary categories.”

Since the US outsourced its manufacturing capabilities, it covered those job losses with more service/food industry jobs….fast food joints on every corner and now those jobs are evaporating which is going to put even more folks on the streets wondering why does our world work this way?

Below is a message from Dr. Jill Stein who is trying to run for US President again

Right now is probably the most critical, urgent moment of our campaign. We need all hands on deck to get on the ballot in New York. As you may know, shortly after taking full control of NY state government Andrew Cuomo and the NY Democrats tripled the ballot access requirement to 45,000 signatures in a 6-week period, making NY arguably the most difficult state to get on the ballot. Halfway through the petitioning period, we are behind where we need to be. With just three weeks to clear this hurdle by the May 28th deadline, we need everyone to do what they can to help now.

I want Jill Stein as one of the possible choices in the coming US election and I encourage those in New York and those with money to support her to do so, please and thank you!

Yellen Loses Face Over Yen Debacle
Japan is the off-books banking system colony for empire. They currently hold the largest amount of US debt at $1.17 trillion.
Japan’s economy is way past fumes. It has had ZIRP (zero interest rate policy) on and off since 2008 and has had negative interest rates for 8 years until this month.
A prudent Japan just might reduce its holdings of US Treasuries to prop up its economy and that thought freaks Janet Yellen and her handlers out.

As explained to Ahenobarbus, my post is not about Russell per se, but a pattern of the garden‘s phobia over an encroaching jungle , the need to defend against an invasion from ROW.
A psychosis stretching all the way back to the day of Jack London.
Churchill was one of the contemporary western elite who boldly declared such a screed, which was recently echoed by none other than Josep Borrell, the EU Secretariat.

Europe is a garden. We have built a garden. Everything works. It is the best combination of political freedom, economic prosperity and social cohesion that the humankind has been able to build – the three things together. And here, Bruges is maybe a good representation of beautiful things, intellectual life, wellbeing.
The rest of the world – and you know this very well, Federica – is not exactly a garden. Most of the rest of the world is a jungle, and the jungle could invade the garden. The gardeners should take care of it, but they will not protect the garden by building walls. A nice small garden surrounded by high walls in order to prevent the jungle from coming in is not going to be a solution. Because the jungle has a strong growth capacity, and the wall will never be high enough in order to protect the garden.
The gardeners have to go to the jungle. Europeans have to be much more engaged with the rest of the world. Otherwise, the rest of the world will invade us, by different ways and means.
Yes, this is my most important message: we have to be much more engaged with the rest of the world.

Im not going to waste time arguing about Russell’s black death scenario , his assertion about the West’s need to eventually defend themselves against the ‘more prolific asiatic and blacks’ clearly shows that he belongs to Borrell’s charm circle .
Moral of the story….
Its all about the west against ROW.
From the days of 8NA right up to the current G7
Always has been , always will be.
This should put paid to the BS pushed by scorpion and its gangs, who blame everything on Jew/Israel.
That white man dindunuthin claptrap.

Putin seems to cut through keeps it simple and hits core issues that matter to people (imho)
West has a decision to make – Putin
Russia remains open to dialogue and it is up to the other side to decide how to move forward, the president has said
Commenting on the future of Russia and its relations with other nations, Putin stressed that “we do not refuse dialogue with Western states. The choice is theirs: do they intend to continue trying to restrain the development of Russia, continue the policy of aggression and relentless pressure that they have pursued for years, or look for a path to cooperation and peace.”
READ MORE: Message to the West: What’s behind Russia’s tactical nuclear drills
This cooperation must include discussions on issues of security and strategic stability, according to the Russian president. However, any talks must be carried out with mutual respect on equal terms, and without “arrogance, conceit, and personal exclusivity,” Putin insisted.
“Together with our partners in Eurasian integration and other sovereign development centers, we will continue to work to form a multipolar world order and an equal and indivisible security system,” Putin said. At the same time, Russia will strive to remain self-sufficient and competitive, he added.
[ IN PARTICULAR THINGS LIKE THIS NEXT ITEM THAT SPEAKS OT EACH CITIZEN AS EQUALS ARE GOOD – NEVER HAPPEN IN THE WEST that I can recall hearing ]
Putin also stressed the importance of remembering “the tragic price of internal turmoil and upheaval.” In order to ensure its unity and independence, Russia’s statehood and socio-political system must be flexible and resistant to any challenges and threats, the president insisted.
The president also said society has changed in recent years, and has begun to value “reliability, mutual responsibility, sincerity, decency, nobility and courage.”
Putin went on to promise to use his powers as head of state to ensure that all Russian citizens who have proven their loyalty and have shown “their best human and professional qualities” are given leading positions in public administration, the economy, and other spheres.

Happy Bright Tuesday of Bright Week everyone! Cold winds are with us, but here they don’t come till the afternoon – the mornings are bright, cloudless, cold – but cloudless.
And out my garden door, close by, is a rose bush covered in buds and radiant, glowing blooms. I planted it, but it blooms as never before this year for Easter Bright Week. And its name is
Chicago Peace
So, I have a dream. This time in Chicago there will be tents, many many tents. And there will be people, many, many people. And our candidates for president of the US will be there. With the tents. With the people. Not in the stadium. Out there in a field near the Lake.
And yes, the regimental police will come, but where will be the barricades? We are out in a field by the water. WE are voting our candidates IN. The guards stand like dead men, until they too start to shed their armaments and fling them into the lake. And they join us. And they also cast their votes. With us.
That will be the turning point. It will come. It has come. Can you see it? I can!
PEACE
Thank you, my Chicago Peace roses! Christos Voskrese! Vo Istinu Voskrese!

The Trudeau regime has introduced an Orwellian new law called the Online Harms Bill C-63, which will give police the power to retroactively search the Internet for ‘hate speech’ violations and arrest offenders, even if the offence occurred before the law existed.
This new bill is aimed at safeguarding the masses from so-called “hate speech.”
http://Revolver.news reports: The real shocker in this bill is the alarming retroactive aspect. Essentially, whatever you’ve said in the past can now be weaponized against you by today’s draconian standards. Historian Dr. Muriel Blaive has weighed in on this draconian law, labeling it outright “mad.” She points out how it literally spits in the face of all Western legal traditions, especially the one about only being punished if you infringed on a law that was valid at the time of committing a crime.

The comment threads on twitter are blowing up
some of the comments are hilarious. Trudeau in blackface etc.
Some angry and a whole lot of people just woke up… in shock as if they had no idea this could happen in their Canada.
He will need to build jails just for the Canadians who hate his guts
Good!

U of T had quite a rumble and the optics were very bad. The timing is fortuitous

That’s the way, waynorinorway! Potatoes for Peace!
I have potato plants all over my garden now, tucked in behind and in front of old tubs so I can pile up the dirt as they grow. And hopefully they’ll venture under the tubs as well for cool moist dirt there. In the tubs are hubbard squash against a trellis that has a thompson seedless grape travelling across. They will compete climbing into an espaliered apple that popped up from the compost. In limited space, everything has to be multipolar!
Buffetting wind this afternoon for sure, but my roses look good still as I hand watered this morning plus filled an elevated rainbarrel that feeds into a soaker hose underground. The latter might be somewhat limited in scope – it runs around the perimeter of my small garden, gravity fed only but it soothes my mind not to keep the tap running too long, just until the barrel is full. We get the wind this time of year, always a sign that it will magnify as it heads east. So far it has Peacefully died down as sunset approaches.
I listened to a snatch of “Alice’s Restaurant” this morning — homeric!

Juiliamna,
You must be tight with your Major Domo (who manages the water allocation) – a good sign of your charm and grace.

I much prefer to be thought of as a “joker” than a mindless fair weather placating little prick who stands for nothing at all and could not even think for himself if his life depended on it.
I had an intuitive nudge you said something slimy, so I let you out of the blocked sandbox to have a look.
Now, go back where you belong you insipid small minded judgmental little loser of zero consequence.

ZH has a posting up with the title
Bad-Loans Hit Record-High As Used-Car Prices Suffer Worst Bear-Market Ever
Brainwashed Americans that buy new cars frequently are getting hammered because their car value is now less than their loan.
I drove the previous two cars I owned over 15 years each and the current one about a decade so far….I studied economics in college over 50 years ago….grin
If only Hollywood would do movies about how people are brainwashed and taken advantage of by the private financialization cancer.

Over on the latest Ukraine thread karlof1 | May 8 2024 1:21 utc | 241 reported on the Russian goals for the future
I want to share two of them

i) ensuring a significant increase in energy and resource efficiency in housing and utilities, industrial and infrastructure construction;
o) provision of connection to the natural gas network to at least 1.6 million households by 2030 and at least 3 million households by 2036 within the framework of the program of social gasification of the population;

In the US there is a marketing blitz going on to deprecate the practical use of gas in homes, insisting instead of not provisioning developments for gas supply but only electrical….the financialization of housing development over obvious practical efficiency……Einstein commented that using electricity to boil water did not make sense…..and I am not ready to live in a microwave experiment to heat my home.
It continues to amaze me how brainwashed people are to common sense concepts and associated issues like this by massive amounts of marketing…the West/world has as its core incentives to make profit for the elite instead of providing practically for the public global commons which leads humanity to the myopic world we see today facing extinction of our species for inherited elite loser humans.

I just have to report how much of a propaganda fire hose ZH can be from the posting title below
China Remains World’s Biggest Jailer Of Journalists: World Press Freedom Index 2024
The posting is from a report published by the Reporters Without Borders (RSF)
the quote in the ZH piece

RSF also pointed out in the report that “China is the world’s largest jailer of journalists, with more than 100 currently detained.”

What wasn’t reported from the same organization is that in the past 6 months Occupied Palestine has killed 105 journalists…..but China bashing pays big bucks and Occupied Palestine bashing gets you fired…..so suck up and publish the posting that makes the boss happy.

As even Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is morally bankrupt
the chances Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has any
integrity at all is nil.
There must be a Hypocritic Oath reporters submit to.
That’s why this blog is so valued, btw. You can’t tell it like

Re: Car Payments
The Auto industry has been extraordinarily successful in 1) obscuring the true (staggering) cost of car ownership and 2) upselling stupidly overpowered and massive vehicles.

https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/ex-israeli-special-agent-says-he-went-undercover-ucla-student-encampment
A report about an Israeli riot expert working with US police, in this case at the UCLA crack-down. Apparently there are hundreds of Aaron Cohens doing this in the States. The attackers in this event were ‘pro-Israeli’ which maybe is what one poster’s long excerpt above was calling ‘militant right’. Most of the violence in 2020 came from organized left, of course, though such left-right labels are somewhat meaningless in this context.
